I totally agree with TheCatGuardian's post. We just adopted our first cat from a shelter and he is 8 months old, and honestly he's still a bit of a handful at times (but that should be expected with any new pet). Try to get one over a year, if not closer to 2 years, as ours is still learning how to play nice and not nipping our ankles to get attention. My husband has always had cats, but this was my first pet and we adopted because I've always wanted one. I did a ton of research and here's what I would suggest as far as supplies:

A high sided litter box with rim - to keep them from kicking litter around and the high walls help keep everything inside. I didn't waste the money on litter liners. They seem gimmicky to me.

Pooper Scooper - It's cheap and gets the job done. Nothing else needs to be said about it.

Stainless Steel Bowl(s) - This one gets good reviews and is the perfect size for their food. You can get two, one for wet and one for dry food. Though I got this one for dry and got a cute oval dish at walmart for ~$2 for his wet. Whatever you want.

Slightly larger bowl for water - Make sure they have plenty for fresh water. I give him new water in the AM and evening after work. I know a lot of people rave about water fountains...but honestly I didn't want to spend the money initially, and my kitty seems to be perfectly fine drinking from the bowl. It'd be worth it to see how your cat feels about the bowl...esp since they will be drinking from bowls at the shelter...they shouldn't be too picky. You can spoil them later on if you decide to, but definitely not necessary.

A safety collar - Make sure it is either a break-away or elastic to ensure the cat doesn't get strangled if it climbs and gets stuck on something and is hanging by its neck. I liked this one because it didn't have an annoying bell, though some like the bell to let you find your cat in the house. The collar also ensure that if the cat gets out anyone who finds him will know he belongs to someone and isn't just a feral cat that they can take for themselves.

Scratching Board - Simple and good reviews. Seems like it will last. You can also get one or two cardboard cheaper ones and see what they prefer to scratch on. My cat doesn't really scratch that much...he uses the scratching posts that are part of his cat tree.

Cat Perch - This is the one we got so he can look out the window. It seems like a good balance of expense and functionality...especially at first. The cat might not even like jumping up on things, so at least this is a safe buy since it's not that tall but still lets them get up off the floor.

Cat bed - This one is highly reviewed and really durable. It's machine washable and will last forever. I really love this bed.

Simple toys at first: Wand Toy, Jingle Balls, Ball Circle Thing, Little Catnip Critter. He also likes paper bags, toilet paper rolls, and his laser pointer. I highly recommend the laser pointer...ours is green.

Greenies Treats

As far as food, you want to ask what they feed at the shelter and get a bag of that at first even if you read online that it isn't "the best." We wanted to get our cat on a mainly wet food diet, so we left his shelter dry food out at night, and gave him half a can of wet food in the morning before work, and half a can at night beofre bed ~9PM, and took the dry food away while the wet food was out. We feed him Friskies Pate...it's actually pretty good for the price. People will get passionate about cat food. Honestly Friskies is fine for us now...they sell it in bulk at Sam's.

Litter - you want to use the kind they use at the shelter so they have comfort in that. You can switch later if you want.

You might also want to get nail clippers and a brush. Our cat is long haired and I like using a comb, but it's really up to you.

As far as gimmicks I would assume that if it seems like a luxury it probably isn't necessary. Cats are very happy with simple things. The vitals are what I listed...a bathroom, food and water (bowls), a few toys, somewhere to scratch, somewhere to get up off the floor, and a safety collar. The bed isn't absolutely vital, but it's nice for them to have somewhere that they feel secure and happy...even if they don't use it at first.

I just buy stuff at the pet store, but I can try and find a few recommendations. You'll want to avoid things with bells or small parts, at least while she's tiny. PetSmart usually has some pretty good stuff, or you can even find a good selection on Amazon. If you're gone a lot, it also might be a good idea to invest in something you can turn on and leave running while you're gone, like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WP7F8YC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2GCMBb2JZP9JV.

Ironically, my cat's favorite toy is a piece of cut up fleece on a stick that I got from the pet store.

Here are a few homemade things that look fun:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/496293492/cat-toy-kitten-toy-kitten-puzzle-cat

https://www.etsy.com/listing/573944129/catnip-toy-medium-kicker-cat-toy-cat

And here are some more things from Amazon that I would recommend:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DT2WL26/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_bLCMBbEDZ585B

And
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QPLUQXY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dOCMBbRA7B6MM

Just make sure she's careful with the string on this one. As long as she doesn't break it off and swallow it, it should be fine.

Some sort of a laser pointer is always a great toy for kitties, just make sure not to shine it in her eyes.

Finally, make sure to get her a cat tree if you have room for one. Cats like to climb. Something like this would be great:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0794T79KM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ERCMBbM18RTGA

Scratching posts are also important, so here's what I would recommend for a scratching post, if you don't want to get the cat tree:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BY385RX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fTCMBbKA5B15Q

Once you spay her, if she isn't already, feed her adult food so she doesn't gain too much weight. A good kitten food to start her on before the spay is Good Natured, at PetSmart. If she's spayed and you want to start her on adult food, I use this, and my cat loves it, and she's super healthy:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XDQCL13/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0VCMBbHDBF7XG

If you have any other questions, please feel free to message me. I have had my cat for two years, and raised her since she was three months old, so I can answer a lot of kitten questions.

One more thing, get her a bed. She may not always use it, but she will appreciate it.

I'm a bit limited in my stuff because I have a dog who tries to play with the cat toys, but here are some I have now:

https://www.chewy.com/trixie-brain-mover-interactive-cat/dp/146125

https://www.chewy.com/trixie-mad-scientist-turn-around/dp/146119

https://www.chewy.com/cat-amazing-best-cat-toy-ever/dp/132771

https://www.chewy.com/kong-glide-n-seek-cat-toy/dp/101667

https://www.amazon.com/SmartyKat-Hot-Pursuit-Concealed-Motion/dp/B06WP7F8YC/ref=sr_1_7?crid=39T23K4DMHZKL&keywords=cat+toys+interactive+best+sellers&qid=1556484455&s=gateway&sprefix=cat+toy%2Caps%2C195&sr=8-7

Basically, my challenge is it can't have anything the dog might eat to her detriment, and/or it has to be used only under my close supervision. For that reason, we don't use the Kong Glide and Seek anymore. The toys have feathers, which she loves, and magnets - which she should not swallow.

My cats have also loved Hexbugs toys, but those are dangerous around the dog. They make both cat toys and non-cat-toy versions that are still great toys. They also love feathers on a pole/string. I have basically this: https://www.amazon.com/Feather-Retractable-Assorted-Interactive-Exerciser/dp/B07F45GGPT/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=cat+fishing+pole&qid=1556484617&s=gateway&sr=8-6 , but I found that the end piece wants to come off too readily. I used duct tape for a while, but need to fix it right at some point. As it stands, it's not safe, because the string mine came with is basically fishing line, and I don't want the dog to swallow it. It's fun though when the cats play with it. Mine grabs the feather end sometimes and trots off, trailing the pole behind her, looking for a safe place to eat her prey. But I think she sees the pole as a rival, so she just ends up carrying it from one hidey hole to the next, looking very smuggly satisfied with her catch!

If you do not have a good cat tree (something with several perches and such, consider getting one - some have toys affixed to them, and that can become a favorite outlet for energy as well as a place to sleep.

Smart cats need lots of stimulation, and if you don't have one, you might consider finding him a playmate, ideally female (male cats get in competition with each other sometimes, and you end up with literal pissing - spraying - contests). A cat who can keep up with him will be the best possible toy! I have two females (sisters) and a male currently. They all play together quite a bit. This does help keep down the crazy. If I had my genius by herself, I'd have to meet ALL her stimulation needs, and that would take probably a few hours a day. The actual amount of stimulation yours needs may be different, and what excites him may be a bit different. But he will need some stuff to do, especially over the next couple years. By the time he's 4 or 5, he'll settle considerably, but some interactive, interesting toys and such will only increase both of your enjoyment.

Thank you so much for taking them in!

They're fine being inside a room in a house with food, water, toys (you did get them toys, yes?), things to scratch and climb, and protected from the elements. Your health questions/concerns have been covered really well by other posters. If you don't mind, I'll talk about something else.

If you haven't already, go to Walmart, Target, Petco, PetsMart or whatever your moderately-priced local equivalent is and get some cardboard scratchers (horizontal & vertical or inclined), squeaky toys, a cat pole (<$45 @ Walmart, goes from ceiling to floor with 3 shelves) or pay a bit more and get a tower. The towers are good because it gives the cats high places in addition to integrated scratching posts. However, multiple individual scratching posts are also helpful in encouraging the kittens to use them rather than your furniture or carpet. Spreading them around your home may help with this.

Nearly everyone is running some sort of Memorial Day sale right now so the towers may currently be much more reasonably priced. Also looking at some in person (my local Petco had a couple set up), if possible, gives you a better idea regarding their stability. Also recommend Amazon and Wayfair for the towers- just pay attention to the reviews.

You'll need a pet carrier to transport them; again check reviews and get a higher rated one. Because they're so small now, I would personally get a larger carrier capable of transporting all of them together until they reach a combined ~20 pounds or so.

Try to pick up a variety of toys. My cats always loved the little battery operated critters that chirped or squeaked like birds & mice. Catnip mice are almost universally adored. They'll also love chasing after things so try to get a wand toy as well. Just stroll through the pet dept and choose a few.

I would say you have found one contributing factor: if he is asleep the whole day, he has energy to spare in the night.

I do not know how much available income you have and what your living conditions are, but cats usually love to climb, explore and peek at active things. So, a cat tree and access to a window overlooking an active street could be beneficial.

Other games? Well, a feather attached to a string and a stick (think fishing rod with a feather as bait) is usually a good way to play. You can be on the couch, as long as you shake the feather, he will go for it. Cats are hunters. Anything that stimulates their instinct to run after things, grab them and beat the tar out of them will be good.

Another possibility is to maybe reserve an hour on a weekend to really see what motivates him. If there are some treats he likes, there are toys which dispense these treats when they play with them. For example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Catit-51282-Treat-Ball-Blue/dp/B00357M8S2

One last sneaky thing: there are substances which cats absolutely love, which make them a bit crazy. We all know catnip, but olives, for example, can have good results (source: my dear old lady, who went completely berserk for olives, confirmed by the vet, as olives are an aphrodisiac for cats. Since yours is snipped, no issue with that.). They make them a bit rowdy, but if you have some time to play with him, this can be a way to put him in the mood - and once he is played out, he will be tired enough to sleep the whole night.

All in all, I think your cat is a bit bored without you, so he is active when you are present. Problem is you do not have the same schedule, so you might have to find ways to keep him occupied when you are absent or to really optimise your time together.

u/acciocorinne · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

My name is Leela!

I would like these treats. I also like this toy, but Mom says it's 50 cents too expensive. Whatever that means.

Viktor, tell your mom to get you this! I would like to play with that and you. Between my good looks (Mom says I have a one-of-a-kind face, which means I am the most beautiful cat) and your hypnosis, I think we would make a great benevolent dictatorship duo. Hanners can come too, I like dogs...but I think Viktor and I will see more eye-to-eye. Or I guess, eye-to-eyes...you have two of them, Viktor? How unusual!

I want to be friends with Hanners and Viktor :)

u/drowgirl · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This is going to be fun. Across my multiple wishlists...

1.) Something that is grey.
Grey bedsheets.

2.) Something reminiscent of rain.
Pet water fountain.

3.) Something food related that is unusual.
Astronaut Ice Cream

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. (Yes, pets count!)
This Bruins banner is for my BFF Becky. She loves the Bruins more than anything. Hockey is her obsession. I put it on my list to remind myself to get it for her at some point. It would make her happy.

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it!
The Name of the Wind. Of everything I've read in the past 6 months, this one I devoured and have been desperate for the second book in (it's on my list to pick up this week, actually, if my paycheck EVER comes in).

Look, I hate... HATE... first person perspective. I see it as a sign of sloppy writing. However, this book had me SOLD on it. Kvothe is possibly one of my new favorite characters OF ALL TIME.

Avid reader doesn't even begin to describe me. I have my own library. I need books like air. And if I had to make a list of 100 books that were all I was allowed to have for the rest of my life, THIS WOULD BE ON IT.

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related!
This kindle book

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...)
The most interesting cat toy in the world

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it.
This choker. Enough said.

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why?
The Breakfast Club Why? Because. It's a good movie. Whether you were the jock, the brain, the spoiled brat, the loser, or the troublemaker-- there's a character you can identify with, and it shows that whatever and whoever you are, you can get along with someone who isn't in your clique.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain.
A Seed Vault

Everyone worries about fighting zombies.

Dumb. You see, when the zombies come, I'm holing up. A few weeks and if they are undead, they'll have rotted themselves to death. If they are fast moving, viral sumbitches, then they'll have likely ended up offing themselves through dehydration or whatever.

In any event, I'll wait them out. But then, I will need to rebuilt and eat.

(Besides, I have my trusty zombie-killing baseball bat, and a bow. Quiet. Efficient.)

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals.
This book on Aztec and Inca expansionism. I'm back in school, and my focus is Mesoamerican Studies. Eventual degrees, here I come!

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items.
Zucchini seeds.

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why?
A KitchenAid Mixer Why? I like to cook and bake. My mother has one that I used for years when I was a kid and still living with her. I'm 30 now. I remember she got it when I was like, 5. IT STILL WORKS. Over a dozen moves, being abused for holidays making bread and cookies and cakes, being used by my Dad (I swear, he looks at appliances and they break) and it STILL FUNCTIONS PERFECTLY.

I cannot think of a kitchen appliance that would be more useful.

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. EDIT A bread box is typically similar in size to a microwave.

This loft bed

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball.
How about 7 somethings? A set of dice.

16.) Something that smells wonderful.
Italian Herb Bread Mix It smells good when you open the box. When it's mixed. While it's rising. While it bakes. After it bakes. As you've slathered butter on it and begin to nom.

17.) A (SFW) toy.
Hawkeye is so SFW I would bring him in to put on my desk.

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school.
This book, of course.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be.
Funko Tyrion Lannister because even a small man can cast a great shadow.

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand.
This.

No one will understand the magnificence of this plushie.

It is a rotund, cuddly, snuggly Cthulhu.

But Cthulhu does not cuddle. He does not care. When the stars are right, he will rise from the deeps and from his seat Ry'leh, devour his cultists-- and everyone else-- by the millions, and bring forth an end to all things.

But how can you deny his Elder God wrath? HOW?! Look at him, all squishy and warm and soft. Look at his little T-Rex arms, reaching out for your love and devotion. His eyes, his wiggly little face tentacles. YOU MUST SNUGGLE HIM.

fear cuts deeper than swords

What do we say to death? NOT TODAY.

I wonder if some puzzle toys or a Turbo Scratcher might be good options for him? They shouldn't tax his heart too much, but they might provide more of an outlet for his prey drive. You could also feed him regularly via food ball.

Is he really food-motivated? If so, more mental stimulation could be had through clicker-training.

I don't know a ton about heart conditions in cats, so I'm not sure what activity levels would be safe for him. Your vet would know better. If more exercise (physical and mental) doesn't help, and he continues to be aggressive without warning, or it gets worse, I might explore medication options. I'm NOT advocating this as anything but a last resort, but sometimes mood stabilizers can improve everyone's quality of life. It doesn't sound like he needs this AT ALL right now, but it's not bad to keep it in mind if it ever does become an issue.

I hope your vet has some good suggestions and information for you! Good luck with everything, and if you feel like an update after the appointment, I'd be interested to hear how it went!

u/PurePerfection_ · 1 pointr/Pets

This approach may take some time, but my cat eventually learned that if I am in the bedroom with the light off and fan on (its an oscillating one that makes a fairly strong humming sound), I am down for the night and it'll be at least a few hours before I come back. After a few weeks of this routine, he gave up on screaming outside my door. The bedroom is off-limits to him at all times, as well. If I'm in there with the light on, he will meow at me, because he knows I'm likely to come back soon.

Mine's a door-rattler, too - he can fit his paw in the crack under the bedroom door and wrap it around the door. To protect the bottom of the door from his claws, I put some rubber weatherstripping on it. For the floor, consider getting a protective film to put down where she usually scratches. Hardware stores sell them to use during painting / construction, and many of them are affordable and tear-resistant.

It may be inconvenient, but do your best to cat-proof the house so you can ignore her acting out with minimal collateral damage. Keep anything fragile in drawers or cabinets unless you're actively using it. Consider making the bedroom a no-cat zone and putting as many valuables as possible in there. Don't leave food or drinks unattended - if you have to step away, stick them in the fridge or a cabinet while you're gone.

Also consider an electronic toy that moves around or something more interactive that will keep her engaged at night or while you're busy without the need for a human to facilitate playtime. Here are a few ideas::

https://www.amazon.com/SmartyKat-Feather-Whirl-Electronic-Motion/dp/B00KQGRIKI/

https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Design-Senses-Circuit-Original/dp/B001LWRFW2

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WP7F8YC

https://www.amazon.com/Tower-Tracks-Track-Interactive-Petstages/dp/B00DT2WL26

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0714D3FDT?psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002DJ6XW

https://www.amazon.com/Hex-480-3030-Nano-Assorted-Styles/dp/B01B45AMIO/

Also, if she ignores the scratching post but loves to tear the crap out of your floor, she may prefer a horizontal scratcher. One wasted $30 scratching post later, I figured that out about my cat. Something like these would be worth a try:

https://www.amazon.com/Bergan-Turbo-Scratcher-Colors-vary/dp/B000IYSAIW - doubles as a toy

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009YQ5KJM/ - this one is nice because you can lay it flat on the floor, prop it up at an angle with the cardboard flap, or hang it from a doorknob to see which works best. Also comes with catnip to sprinkle inside it. These have corrugated cardboard surfaces and don't last as long as carpet or sisal rope, but my cat seems more satisfied with something he can actually destroy. He'll jump on it, attack it with his claws, then roll around in the bits he tore off. You will vacuum a lot of cardboard flakes off the floor as it starts to wear out, but for me it's worth the trouble. If you don't like the mess, you can buy this one to test whether horizontal, inclined, or hung against the wall works best, then invest in a similar style of scratcher made from more durable material. That was my plan, but he just loves this stuff so much I order one as an add-on every month when I buy litter.

u/lazer_potato · 3 pointsr/catproblems

The first thing to resolve is playtime. It's possible she just loves plastic, but the fact that she doesn't want to play with you at all suggests either a picky cat, or one that doesn't yet trust you. You're the food provider, but playtime is also quality bonding time for a cat. She's already fully grown, so maybe it's a learned thing, but it's something that you should be able to correct to some extent.

There are some motion cat toys that you could try using to get her playing more on her own.

It's also possible that you aren't playing with her the way she wants to be played with, cats can be very fickle about this. My own cat is very picky about how my SO and I play with her, and she picks one of us based on how she wants to play. She'll pick me when she wants to chase a stick toy, and my SO when she wants to wrestle, that kind of thing.

Have you tried using the straws to play with her? Maybe try hiding a straw under a blanket where she can see it move from wiggling it. You could also try new tactics with the stick toys like this, hide them under things and move them. My cat only likes the stick toys if I alternate between moving them very slowly while in her line of sight, slowly moving out of her line of sight, and then moving it quickly to get her to chase it when she tries to pounce it.

I'd also suggest looking up different playtime techniques for cats online, like on YouTube or what have you, especially related to more wild/feral cats, as they also don't really like playing with humans. I'm not saying she's wild of course, but because she's more standoffish from you it may be along the same lines.

If you can get her to play with you consistently, then you can very easily tire her out and get her on the schedule YOU want her on. The idea is that cats hunt/play and then eat the reward of the hunt, and then sleep.

My own cat used to be very similar with waking us up very early for food, usually by making lots of noise and biting if that didn't work. Once we were able to get her on the hunt/eat/sleep schedule with her timed meals, we basically stopped the bad morning behavior entirely.

Sorry for the long post, hope this helps!

Oh yes definitely petting and holding is good! It's good to get them comfortable with contact for sure. It's just if they get bit-y or scratchy because they are being playful and think they can play with hands, it's important to redirect them to a toy or let them know that biting or scratching will end the interaction.

I've found wand toys are the best for interactive play. My kitty is obsessed with this one and it's nice that the toy is interchangeable because they do get destroyed. I'd recommend removing the eye balls off the worms though because wouldnt want a kitten ingesting those (not sure why they put them on there!)

u/conparco · 6 pointsr/Siamesecats

Firstly, make sure to post pictures when you bring him/her home!

Siamese cats are very smart, and that means they bore easily. My kitten (~9mo) loves to play fetch or with the feathers on a stick because we are interacting with him and paying attention to him while he plays. But really, each of my Siamese cats (like all cats) has had his or her own favorite toy, so get little things here and there as you see them and just note what yours likes! These are my kitten's favorite. He is seriously obsessed. I get them much cheaper from a pet store near where I live. But my older guy prefers these, which I find at Wal-Mart.

I would suggest making a "warm box" with a heating pad under a soft blanket and maybe something over the top so you kitten can hide in a warm and cozy place, especially when he/she is stressed out after the move.

Another thing that I would consider an essential is some sort of perch for your cat to get up off the ground and observe the room, like a cat condo or something similar. I made one out of scrap wood and carpet, so it doesn't have to break the bank. :)

SCRATCHING POSTS! I personally do not have the patience for putting the little nail caps on them, but I find that if they have different options for scratching, they resort to the furniture less.

I am so excited for you! Your new kitten will have a great and loving home and your life will never be the same, I promise!

Dunno if this will work for you, but we gradually distanced our puppy further from us at night. At first we'd keep him in his kennel on the night stand, so he could see us. We did this for a few weeks and gradually moved him to the floor near our bed. Then progressed to move his kennel closer to the door, then outside our door until finally he was comfortable enough to stay by himself at night in another room.

It also makes it easier if his kennel becomes a safe place for him. Like others have mentioned. Put a treat or a favorite toy in there with him. Our pup really liked this guy: http://www.amazon.com/Petstages-101-Puppy-Cuddle-Pal/dp/B0006MU8WC/ We'd microwave the insert to simulate having a warm buddy cuddling with him.

u/MsStardust · 1 pointr/AskWomen

Hmm, well, just like people, individual cats have different preferences and interests. Definitely get some little mice (or similar-sized toys) that he can bat around. I like to look for sales on the multi-packs at PetSmart for some variety. Some cats like longer toys that they can hold with their front paws and kick with their hind legs. I would also get a long "teaser" type of toy (something like this or this), and a laser pointer is usually a safe bet.

Additionally, while not a toy, something for him to scratch is also pretty important. If you don't have room for a scratching post, there are other options like those refillable corrugated cardboard scratchers.

Congrats on your new kitty, and thank you for adopting from a shelter!!

  • Cat number 1 is Sylvester. My SO and I picked him from a local shelter back in December, and I love him to death. He loves to cuddle, and must be touching you at all times. One of the best things about him is that he will totally wait until you wake up to bother you. As soon as you are awake, he loves to get all up on you, wanting to be petted, but he will not wake you up himself. He also gets excited and comes to the door when I get home. Bonus picture - Sylvester's meaty fangs

  • Cat number 2 is Bear. My SO and I just got Bear about two weeks ago. Bear was his mom's cat, but she had 3 cats, and was planning on getting rid of her. I couldn't have that. So I brought her home, and within three days, Sylvester and Bear were playing and getting along. We need to get her fixed, but nothing to worry about since Sylvester is. Bear is very playful, but she doesn't cuddle as much as Sylvester. Bonus picture - Bear's seductive face.

  • The two cats together

  • Sylvester and Bear would love this

  • My parent's have two dogs (that I also consider my own, but I couldn't take them when I moved out) but they are tiny giant yorkies, and they hate toys, so I am afraid I am not helpful with that.

A good resource to have on hand is the Cat Owner's Manual. It's illustrated, actually entertaining to read, and covers a lot of the basics of cat care.

I will second a lot of the recs below:

  • A water fountain is awesome; cats will drink much more water if it's clean and moving.
  • Talk to your vet for food recs; don't buy cheap.
  • Clipping claws can become easier if you follow the method described below to accustom your kitty to the process.
  • Scratching posts/pads are crucial, and there are lots of types -- I keep some of each kind, but you'll want both vertical and horizontal scratchers.

Toys can be any of a wide variety. One called Da Bird is almost universally popular. Catnip toys are always a hit, just consider the size and shape so they can be picked up and carried by the kitty. 'Kicker' toys are almost always a hit. I've had good luck with floppy fish, mylar crinkle balls, and soft spongy foam balls as well.

You definitely need to stick with some sort of reduced food regimen. I wouldn't be surprised if domesticated animals don't get how to hunt anymore... I mean, can YOU hunt down a moose for dinner? =)

Maybe you're switching up the food locations too quickly for him. You could try less random locations around the house to "hide" the food. Pick a few set locations. Take him to it at first. Make sure he remembers where they are. Then switch it up after he's getting it. It might take him a month to get it. Give him time. You may never be able to just randomize the locations without showing him.

Maybe try a food-dispensing toy like this or this or this - Edit: that last one seems to work the best, based on the reviews. Try looking locally or more internet search. But don't give him more than the 1/4 cup daily.

He might not recognized the wet food as food, or he doesn't like that brand. I'm not sure if it works to slowly add some wet food to his dry food to make him understand that it's still food.

See if he'll chase a wadded up paper ball or tin foil ball. Try to make him bring it back for a kibble =) See if he'll chase string. The idea is to try to make him run. A friend of mine had a cat that would chase a chain so I'd sit cross legged on the floor and drag it along the floor in a circle around my body. The cat would chase it around and around me while I kept switching it from one hand to the other.

Nothing wrong with laying next to the crate, but if he's coming from a situation where he was with a lot of other dogs, this might be a good tool for you. If that's too expensive and he's small enough, this should be sufficient and it's a lot cheaper. Our dog had the same issues, but the latter option was much too small for her. I hope that helps. :-)

Here are my kitties! The blonde one is Lyra and the black one is Duke.

This toy is Duke's absolute favorite. He doesn't know how to meow, but he squeaks and screeches whenever I pick it up. He loves to drag it around the house. Sometimes I wake up and he left it for me in the bed, or if he'll drop it on me while I'm on the computer. We have tons of toys and there are others he likes, but he treats that one like it's his safety blankey or something.

My kitten (now 7 mos) likes to knead and suckle when he was little, we got him at 8 weeks old. We found him an appropriate place to do it instead of discouraging it.

Petstages makes a Soothe soft cat toy/pillow that purrs, we call it Mama. He loved it. It still calms him down when he’s getting a bit too rambunctious.

We got it at Petsmart, but they have it on amazon too.

Try providing hiding spots that are in easier to access areas. Putting a blanket over a chair with an inch exposed to make a fort usually works. A cardboard box with one of the panels down so they are 'hidden' usually works too. My cats love the collapsible cat tunnels on amazon that cost like $11.

u/mickmudd · 1 pointr/Wishlist

Yes, yes they do :) Catit It does not come with seeds or soil. You have to get that separately.

u/LadyDarkKitten · 11 pointsr/Pets

... I know this isn't what you want to hear, but for my idea to work it has to be said... Put the people food away. Sorry, it had to be said. Now we can move on, have you tried a puzzle toy with treats in it? There are a number of good puzzle toys for kitties, not only can it ease food seeking behavior but it will easy stress and loneliness when you aren't around to play with them. Something like this. Which you can make if you have some glue and extra cardboard laying about.

u/banach90 · 2 pointsr/cats

How about springs such as these. They can both spin and bounce. If she's not into mice, you can also try plastic balls (some of them with jingle bells inside like these) or crinkle balls since some cats enjoy the sounds they make.

u/beesknees-trees · 1 pointr/Rabbits

Mmm Idk if they like it. I think probably not that much because I never see them playing in it. I do see balls on the floor sometimes but we have put hay and treats in there so that kinda explains it. They like chewing on the box.

I think it's worth a shot just to give them something to explore. However, if you don't already have a tunnel, I would try that first, because ours use the tunnel all the time. It adds character to their room. We decided on this one (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074DRBMFB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , but there are many similar options).

I think chewing toys rank above both of those. We are actually looking for different kinds of woods we could try and a reasonable way to get it. (We don't want to buy wood on the internet. Might be possible to collect and dry some. I know this resource has a lot about wood http://wabbitwiki.com/)

Oh man...! Interactive toys? Until she got older and lazy, my cat loved her [scratcher ] (https://www.amazon.com/Bergan-Turbo-Scratcher-Cat-Toy/dp/B000IYSAIW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1481180797&sr=8-6&keywords=cat+scratcher). And those little plastic [jingle balls] (https://www.amazon.com/Hartz-Play-Midnight-Crazies-Toys/dp/B000BO96K0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1481180915&sr=8-3&keywords=cat+jingle+balls). She likes those hartz ones, I guess because they are easier for her to pick up and carry. We used to find them in bed with us all the time!

Anyway, those two things really helped us get through those kitten crazies. Now we just have to deal with her stealing our pillows and kicking us in the head while we try to sleep!

u/heresyandpie · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

Try doing some basic environmental enrichment:

There's no need for their veggies to arrive in a bowl- hide little stashes of them around the home for them to find.

Try taking paper bags, putting some hay and a few treats in them and twisting them shut. I just made Vivian a few that had a handful of pellets, two different kinds of hay, and a few freeze-dried cranberries mixed in. She goes nuts trying to get into the bag to get the goodies. You can do the same thing with cardboard boxes.

I'll also sometimes dangle their veggies. Use wire or natural-fibered twine (i like hemp or jute) and attach it to the veggies. Suspend it from a door frame or door knob and make it so they have to stand up to eat it.

Try offering a dig box on occasion. Dirt, shredded paper, sand- whichever.

Try cat toys like this one. Put their pellets in there with one or two little treats and let them roll it around to get their food.

Like others have mentioned, move their boxes around. Build them little forts to explore and rearrange. Pick up half of their normal toys and put them away for a little bit. Swap some out once a week.

Keeping any animal entertained is all about making them use their brain. Food's an easy motivator. Changing the basic layout of their toys or simply cycling through them keeps everything fresh for them.

Oh boy have I wasted a ton of money trying to find shit the kitty likes to play with! Here is the best combo I found:

This attachment +with this handle.

The trick is you have to bounce it around as if it’s a mouse - little skips and hops, quick sprints running alongside the wall or furniture, then “hide” when spotted. Hence why I’m recommending a specific handle because it’s the one I’ve found that offers the most control, and it extends so I can catch her interest by flinging it past her line of view and into a “hide and seek” posture. Remember, she’s a cat - she wants to hunt!

ETA: ps don’t waste your money on other fancy looking shit, she’ll be more interested in the box it came in and you’ll regret wasting your money!

E2: missed that you have 2 other cats! Yes, of course she’ll leave bummertown when she has friends to play with!

Eh I don't know what's the most important item on my list. Each item is as important as the others really.

But this cat toy would definitely be up there as my cat means a lot to me. I feel I don't do enough for her and I'm always worrying I'm not providing enough for her, even though I'm told I spoil her a bit.. I've made her window cushions for sleeping on as I couldn't afford to buy her some and always put her needs before my own. So getting a gift for her would make me ecstatic.

And now I'm going to go hide in my crazy cat lady shame!

u/cutekick · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Ah she is one of those cats that likes hard to get things. Look into puzzle toys like this or this. You may also want to build her something to crawl through and play in out of cardboard boxes. Just take a lot of boxes, cut cat sized holes in several places and tape them all together. [Some people go a bit crazy]
(http://welovecatsandkittens.com/cat-pictures/man-builds-dragon-shaped-cardboard-house-cat/), some have magical ways to cut cardboard nicely, but normal people know the cat doesn't care if it is pretty.

It might just take awhile to figure out what toys she likes. One of mine only likes feather toys. He doesn't care about anything unless it has feathers. The other one doesn't like to be seen playing so he likes toys that are hung for doors, his cat tree, and my hair ties (which he steals all the time!!).

So, basically it is a plastic ball with a hole in it that you can fill with treats (I use pellets) and they release the treats in small amounts as your pigs roll them around. I think they are a particularly good toy for pigs because they require problem solving and forces them to get exercise while getting their pellets. Crate training saved me and my puppy, so I highly recommend it. We unexpectedly ended up fostering her a couple of months ago and I don't think we would have kept her if we didn't crate. Man, that first night was rough though. She was so whiny, even though I had the warm toy (this one has beans in a little cloth bag you can warm up in the microwave) and we turned on a couple of fans for the white noise... but I probably got <4 hours of sleep that night. Just remember, sometimes the pup will be crying because it misses you, and sometimes it legitimately needs to go potty, and you want to balance how often you check on them so you're not giving them attention for whining just to see you. I took mine out every 2-3 hours and she at least didn't have any accidents. And then the next night she slept from 10pm-5am without a peep! It will probably take some pups longer, but eventually they should get that crate time is quiet/sleepy time.

You probably know this, but make sure crate time is never, ever punishment time. Even if you just need an hour of quiet, don't banish your pup to the crate with nothing to do (it's just asking for trouble). Mine is 7-8 months old(ish) and she still gets a small treat just for going into puppy jail, and a kong full of yummy stuff if she has to be in there for a longer period of time.

This is getting rambly... But PM me if you ever need to talk. I cried so much when we first got our puppy. I really didn't think we'd be able to keep her. But now that we've worked through the potty training and the whining and the chewing... I can't imagine my family without her :)

It wraps around one door handle, under the door, then around the other handle. Has a motor for 2 speeds and takes AA batteries. The cat loves it!

This is adorable, but cotton balls (and Q-tips) are very dangerous for cats. They get caught in their mouths, and they’ll choke. Make sure toys are big and solid enough they can’t fully get them in their mouths. I buy these foam balls, and my cats love them: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0017JAQF2/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1543418187&sr=8-8&keywords=foam+cat+balls&dpPl=1&dpID=31RxY1saygL&ref=plSrch

I was gifted one of these for my cats. Unfortunately, they had no interest in it. However, I brought it to work with me, and we put our fat clinic cat's food in it so he's got to actually work for his meal. It's been working really well for him.

Of my 4 cats, 2 really enjoy the food dispenser "toy", 1 will follow the other two around and try to steal kibbles, and 1 doesn't seem to understand it.

Given they're only a few dollars, I'd give it a try. I strongly suggest getting the adjustable multi-hole type, and not this kind. (Both links to Amazon.com products.)

My Velcro adores stuffed mice. These are his favorites. Since those constantly get batted under the sofa (I rescued 5 of them this morning), I also got this which won't fit under there. He carries it around, attacks it, snuggles it and loves all up on this darn rat.

I also built (ok, glued and used a staple gun for padding/upholstering) a cat tree (I hate the ones in the shops) from a couple of Ikea LACK tables - a side table and a coffee table - and he climbs on and off those all the time when I'm home, so I assume he does while I'm at work as well.

I have a string-a-fling toy - this thing that my cat goes nuts over. When I'm trying to cook dinner he's under my feet constantly looking for attention and this keeps him occupied for the hour I need to cook and clean up after work. My cat is a hyperactive hyperaffectionate idiot and this is the only interactive toy that has managed to keep his attention past a week.

Yeah we have 2 cats. One FatCat, one SiameseDerpCat. The FatCat is very dedicated.

We also have one of these treat boxes and FatCat does the same thing - fishes out as many as possible before gorging on them.

It's quite unfortunate. She's fat, and also has a sensitive tummy so if she eats too much/too fast, or any variation of that, she pukes. :\

One time FatCat gorged on treats from the box, went to the Treat-Ball-That-Really-Has-Regular-Catfood, ate some regular catfood, and barfed ON the treatball. The DerpCat was upset since she couldn't get to the food either.

sigh

Emmy is irrationally obsessed with these mice. (addon, if that makes a difference.) We had to take them all away from her when she lived at my parents' house because the dog liked to eat them (and puke them up) but now that she's living in my apartment, she can have them again! The one remaining mouse is already lost, and she's been in the apt. only 2 days.

Apples don't make great pets.

My cat is OBSESSED with this toy. He sits there for hours and begs for us to turn it on. We are on our second one bc it broke after three months of constant siege.
