Oh! Oh! If you can't tell by my username, I can help here!

First of all, based on the $85 fee I'm assuming you're adopting adult cats? Thank you so much! Adult cats take forever to find their furever homes. If they're kittens THANK YOU for adopting them in pairs! It's more important than most people think! But no matter what, the one time fee means that you're choosing to adopt instead of supporting a breeder. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this! I foster kittens that are constantly coming and going, so I've gotten a pretty good list of cheap things that work well. Sorry in advance for the wall of text. If you need ANY help at all when it comes to anything cat related, please ask!

  • Food - Make sure you give them whatever the shelter gives them even if you plan on transitioning. It's important that you do it slowly. Here is a good article about how to do it. I highly recommend not going cheap here. If you spend money on one thing, a good diet is where to spend it on! I recommend grain free and/or limited ingredient diets, but I'm not a vet so I'd talk to yours about specifics.
    • Food bowl: You wouldn't think a little bowl would be so damn expensive, but it is. I have a dozen or so of these bowls for the kittens since I use many at a time, but I'd recommend starting out with 4 and see how you do there. Basically have 4 bowls (two to give to each cat for food, and an extra 2 for when the dirty bowls are in the wash). Almost any bowl will work, including the ones you have, but if you were thinking of buying one of those $73.12 bowls because you think your cat needs it and it has a silicone bottom, don't. They're a huge waste of money.
  • Litter/box: Skip all the weird stuff/scents to put in your litter box to get rid of the smell. Just get unscented litter and baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda on the bottom of the box, fill half your litter, sprinkle some more, fill the rest of your litter. You will also want 2 litter boxes at a minimum. The general rule of thumb is a box per cat + an extra one. As for litter box, I love this one, and here looks like a cheaper and similar version. As for litter, I HIGHLY recommend clumping because non clumping is a nightmare (we need to use it for very small kittens since they can ingest the clumping and it can hurt them). I use petco's bulk litter and love it. If you have one near you, you can pick up a big bin and refill it as needed for a lower price. Here is the big bag of it, but I think a refill on a 30lb thing is 10 dollars?
  • Scratcher: Cats need to scratch, and they'll do it if you provide them with a scratcher or if you provide them with your own furniture. I would recommend at least one of these for each cat, plus maybe a couple extra depending on how big your home is. I have these everywhere because of of my kitties loves using them as beds. Soft fluffy stuff? Not a chance. Hard cardboard? Now we're talking! He's weird, and one of your beauties may be too. This is the best value one I could find, but really any of them would work. I also like this one because it's bed shaped-ish so they can also lay in it.
  • Vet care: Every year you'll need to get vaccines and preferably a checkup for each one of your cats. I know petco recently started doing a clinic day where they JUST the vaccines for something like 40 bucks or something, but that doesn't come with a checkup which I would recommend. I would ask your shelter about low cost vet clinics in your area, I'm sure they would know! I can't find a link where you can put in your zip code and get a list or I would link it :(
  • Toys: This is probably the easiest category to overspend in so don't. There's a lot of fancy looking toys that are great, but your cat gets bored of them quickly and even the best ones will get destroyed. I highly recommend buying a few kinds of cheap toys and seeing what your cat likes. Then regularly replacing them so it's new and shiny! For toys that'll fit in a bag, I like to have a catnip bag that I put some catnip in with the toys. Every so often I'll take toys out of the bag and the cats lose their minds. If after they get bored they're still in good condition - back in the bag they go!
    • Sparkle balls: These become choking hazards really quick, but cats LOVE THEM. I just bought these and they seem to be holding up well. Just like the food, I wouldn't recommend going cheap on them. The good news though is that even the good ones are still pretty cheap! Your local pet store will usually have good quality ones of these as well. Just don't get those "100 sparkle balls for 2 dollars!" off amazon.
    • Multipack: I LOVE this pack because it has a little bit of everything to see what kitty likes. The only downside is that the tunnel is pretty small. That's perfect for my foster kittens, but not so much for an adult cat. If you get it and the tunnel is too small, donate it to your shelter! Something like this also gives you a cheap way to stock up on a variety of toys.
    • Cat Dancer: I buy these in bulk they're so amazing. The link I'm giving you currently has the price of $4.20, but on November 2nd another seller will have them back at stock for 2 bucks each. I wouldn't buy them at 4 dollars, but at 2 they're a steal. The company also has a thing where you can hook them onto your wall and cats will play with it while you're gone. I bought it but haven't set it up yet. Another thing I LOVE about this is that you can wrap them around something.
    • Fishing pole toy: I call all of these kinds of toys a fishing pole toy. It's essentially a stick with something dangling from it. Cats go CRAZY for them and this is a good and cheap one. I also stick the pole part in couch cushions or between the bed and box spring so it's dangling.
  • Cat tower: Honestly, some cats love them, some cats don't. I would eventually get a cat tower (at least one), but don't let it stop you from adopting! Your local pet store will have tons, but I've seen some very happy people who got a massive crazy one for cheap off amazon. I have 4 (3 for my cats, one for the kitten room) that all get very loved but I honestly have no idea where I got them from or I'd link it to you!

I totally agree with TheCatGuardian's post. We just adopted our first cat from a shelter and he is 8 months old, and honestly he's still a bit of a handful at times (but that should be expected with any new pet). Try to get one over a year, if not closer to 2 years, as ours is still learning how to play nice and not nipping our ankles to get attention. My husband has always had cats, but this was my first pet and we adopted because I've always wanted one. I did a ton of research and here's what I would suggest as far as supplies:

A high sided litter box with rim - to keep them from kicking litter around and the high walls help keep everything inside. I didn't waste the money on litter liners. They seem gimmicky to me.

Pooper Scooper - It's cheap and gets the job done. Nothing else needs to be said about it.

Stainless Steel Bowl(s) - This one gets good reviews and is the perfect size for their food. You can get two, one for wet and one for dry food. Though I got this one for dry and got a cute oval dish at walmart for ~$2 for his wet. Whatever you want.

Slightly larger bowl for water - Make sure they have plenty for fresh water. I give him new water in the AM and evening after work. I know a lot of people rave about water fountains...but honestly I didn't want to spend the money initially, and my kitty seems to be perfectly fine drinking from the bowl. It'd be worth it to see how your cat feels about the bowl...esp since they will be drinking from bowls at the shelter...they shouldn't be too picky. You can spoil them later on if you decide to, but definitely not necessary.

A safety collar - Make sure it is either a break-away or elastic to ensure the cat doesn't get strangled if it climbs and gets stuck on something and is hanging by its neck. I liked this one because it didn't have an annoying bell, though some like the bell to let you find your cat in the house. The collar also ensure that if the cat gets out anyone who finds him will know he belongs to someone and isn't just a feral cat that they can take for themselves.

Scratching Board - Simple and good reviews. Seems like it will last. You can also get one or two cardboard cheaper ones and see what they prefer to scratch on. My cat doesn't really scratch that much...he uses the scratching posts that are part of his cat tree.

Cat Perch - This is the one we got so he can look out the window. It seems like a good balance of expense and functionality...especially at first. The cat might not even like jumping up on things, so at least this is a safe buy since it's not that tall but still lets them get up off the floor.

Cat bed - This one is highly reviewed and really durable. It's machine washable and will last forever. I really love this bed.

Simple toys at first: Wand Toy, Jingle Balls, Ball Circle Thing, Little Catnip Critter. He also likes paper bags, toilet paper rolls, and his laser pointer. I highly recommend the laser pointer...ours is green.

Greenies Treats

As far as food, you want to ask what they feed at the shelter and get a bag of that at first even if you read online that it isn't "the best." We wanted to get our cat on a mainly wet food diet, so we left his shelter dry food out at night, and gave him half a can of wet food in the morning before work, and half a can at night beofre bed ~9PM, and took the dry food away while the wet food was out. We feed him Friskies Pate...it's actually pretty good for the price. People will get passionate about cat food. Honestly Friskies is fine for us now...they sell it in bulk at Sam's.

Litter - you want to use the kind they use at the shelter so they have comfort in that. You can switch later if you want.

You might also want to get nail clippers and a brush. Our cat is long haired and I like using a comb, but it's really up to you.

As far as gimmicks I would assume that if it seems like a luxury it probably isn't necessary. Cats are very happy with simple things. The vitals are what I listed...a bathroom, food and water (bowls), a few toys, somewhere to scratch, somewhere to get up off the floor, and a safety collar. The bed isn't absolutely vital, but it's nice for them to have somewhere that they feel secure and happy...even if they don't use it at first.

LONG. I might title this 'my second tinder match, continued, wherein I get to try some new things.'

This is an update to my previous post.. They both happened last week so I figure they fit here.

We met up again yesterday at my place. She wore a blue sun dress this time and bright red lipstick, which is a fetish of mine. She had said that she wanted to enjoy Sunday and sit on my deck in the sun, and read the paper and drink coffee... But we both knew that would all come second to the main event.

On entering my apartment I closed the door behind us and we stopped pretty much just inside the door by the living room. We stared into each other's eyes for a few moments before starting to make out. At some point she said something like 'I'm willing to do what I need to, to earn the right to hang out on the deck' which was music to my ears. WHO IS THIS WOMAN?? And are there more where she came from.

So she sticks her hands down my pants and unzips me and drops to her knees for a blowjob. Greaaat. After a while I command her to take off her sun dress and now she's kneeling in front of me in the living room on the wall-to-wall carpet, her black lacy underwear stark against the pale skin of her fit, plus sized back -- a wonderful sexy blank erotic space -- and her hips and butt. She's also wearing a bra and heels. Then one of us took off her bra...

I had cupped my right palm against the back of her head as she bobbed up and down, but I also love women's backs and butts, so I'm occasionally stroking her back, and reaching down and squeezing her ass....This continues for another 5 minutes? and then I tell her to flip over to doggie and I take off her underwear (over her heels). I lick my finger, reach down to separate her lips and stir up the wetness, and then I simply start pounding her from behind, doggie. I didn't want to finish there though so after a few minutes we moved into the bedroom. This is where it got [more] interesting.

I hooked her up again to the restaints on the bed -- these by the way -- and put a blindfold on her. Then I climbed on top of her naked body - she's still wearing the heels, though - and started making out with her before mounting her chest and fucking her tits and face. After a few minutes of this, I got off of her and walked out of the bedroom.

Leaving her there without saying a word, I headed into the kitchen, grabbed a small mug, and put a fistful of ice into it from the freezer. On the way back to the bedroom I popped a piece in my mouth. I got back to her bound and blinded form and immediately started sucking her nips, introducing her to a sudden and hopefully unexpected coldness (she might have heard the ice rattling around in the kitchen from there). About 10 minutes of ice play followed, and I like to do it slowly and with varying (short) breaks so that she's not sure whether there's going to be ice or not, or where ... I did place a piece of ice on her labia for around 15? seconds - in retrospect (for me but not for, you, dear reader, but all will be made clear) I should have left it there for a minute at least - it might have stung!

Yes, you read that right ;-)

A few more minutes of ice play and I abandoned the ice to return to basic mouth and hand. I worked my way down to her breasts, alternating sucking and lightly biting on each one, and simultaneously fingering her pussy.

I wanted to get her off, and she was clearly enjoying this, but it's nice to know what a partner likes. So I said to her, what do you like?? And she said, bite me more. Hard.

I'd never bitten anyone HARD before. She's bound wrist and ankle spread-eagled on the bed and blindfolded and now she wants me to bite her nipples like some walking dead zombie.

Can do!

I begin sucking her right nipple, and then I nip down hard on it in my front teeth and suck while pulling my head back, causing her breast to sort of vertically extend from her chest to my mouth. Her nipple is in between my front teeth. I thought I tasted something but she's not pregnant so it couldn't have been milk - it must have just been sweat. Anyway.

She gasps with pleasure.

So I let that one go and repeat this move with her left breast. More pleasurable noises and I can she she's loving it as she thrashes her restrained body around.

Now I start to be creative, for me anyway, as I've never been in this situation before. So I slap her breast - whack! - and she loves it. Now I'm biting and sucking and one, and whomping the other one and she's into it. I move my hand to her pussy and she's wet and slick. I can feel her get wetter as I smack her nipples.

Then I have another creative moment and I decide to bite on her nipple, suck hard, pull my head back to 'extend' the breast, and then, trying to time it just right, I release her tit from my teeth and at the same time give it a stinging WHACK! with my right hand. It takes two tries to get the timing right but she goes a little wild. I'm sort of proud I came up with this move which I, of course, now privately refer to as the 'Scum-and-Nipplely.' (No I don't. But it seems like a good move.)

I keep this up for a while and then I recall that I read or saw that some women like to have their pussy slapped. I've never done that, either. So I give her pussy a flat-handed slap and am rewarded with a gasp. Remember that she can't see any of this coming.

She really starts squirming. I give her V one slap. and wait. and one slap....and wait...then I bite her right nipple and give her V a series of slaps with my right hand, whack whack whack whack whack whack whack whack- the response is squirming, moaning, thrashing...It's great.

Then I try to kiss her and she turns her face to the side!! Seriously, I was surprised. I was like wtf is going on?? But only for maybe...5 seconds? Then I understood. I grabbed her head with both hands, forced her face straight and kissed her violently. I was assured I was doing what she wanted when she bit my tongue but didn't bite it off, which I imagine she would have done if I had suddenly been doing things she didn't like...

I see what's going on and I like it. She continues to turn her head away as I try to kiss her, and then when I go to finger her she closes her legs hard (she can't close them all the way, but the under-the-bed restraints had moved around the corner of the mattress a bit and gave her more leeway). I like this game. I move down between her legs and force them all the way open with my arms . Then I jam my face in her pussy and eat her out vigorously while using my arms to force her legs open. I've never (had to do? been lucky enough to do?) anything like this before but I'm totally into it. I'm munching away and she keeps 'trying' to close her legs. She's moaning and bucking and squirming.

At some point I thought a riding crop would be nice. I don't ride horses and I haven't prepared for this, so I don't have one in the house. However, I DO have a cat, and this is one of his toys. Purrrrfect! I get off of her and go into the living room and grab it. I climb back on top of her - again, she's blindfolded - and give her a few kisses.

----
You know what, that photo of it sucks. I looked on line and couldn't find a good one, so here [OC] it is.

But I was using it like this. Thwack! The braid is leather or some fake leather. Real enough anyway.

----

Then I sit up - I'm straddling her - and after a pause during which I take careful aim, I give her a left nipple a sudden stinging whack with the leather braid and cord of the cat wand. This is unexpected to her, but her reaction is pure pleasure. So I whack her nipple and wait....And then whack the other one and wait....I'm taking my time; she's getting red, livid straight lines on her body. I'd call them 'crop marks,' but they truthfully are cat toy marks.

I took some time slowly and methodically striking her breasts and then moved to her body and her vagina. The cat toy doesn't have the weight to really smack a vj, though, but she seemed to love it. I alternated between swatting her body with the leather braided/corded cat toy, and working her over with my teeth and tongue.

At this point I've been attacking her for a solid 30 or even 40 minutes and I'm running out of steam. It's only like 1pm on Sunday and I haven't eaten food yet.

I launch an all-out biting and tounging attack on her body in an effort to give her a big O, which kind of reminded me of the fireworks finale at a July 4 celebration.

We spent most of the rest of the day reading the paper on the deck, drinking coffee, at some point we went out for a bloody mary and some light food, and then back to my place where we hung out more before some chill naked play.

Then she had to get back home.

It was 8:30pm. We'd been hanging out about 8 hours....

Well, I've yet to meet a cat or a dog that can resist a lazer pointer, but I try to avoid using those. The animal tends to get fixated on the floor, obsessively. Instead I prefer toys that allow for a more realistic play - those toys that are a stick with a string/elastic and some sort of toy or feather at the end are the best.

If kitty is more of a jumper and climber, there are great toys with feathers - when they move through the air, it even sounds like a bird's wings flapping. If he's more into scurrying on the ground, they have great chonky little toys that look like mice and kind of thonk as they move.

A long shoelace with a pinecone on one end, tied to some long kitchen utensil might work just as well. You can experiment with dollar-store stuff before you start spending tens of dollars only to find out he prefers the shoelace :)

This is the kind of thing I'm talking about though : https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Fit-Life-Feather-Exerciser/dp/B00LZUCIL8/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?crid=15WBTFSYCT09D&keywords=interactive+cat+toy&qid=1555384469&s=gateway&sprefix=Interactive+&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1

But the interactive feature is the important part - you need to control the play. Get him running, jumping, climbing - he should be panting... When he starts panting, give him a sec to catch his breath, then start playing again. Keep going until he's just wiped out. Laying on the floor panting, kinda batting at the toy, cause he's just too tired to go on... Usually you're looking at 20-30 min. Probably less as you play with him regularly.

If you're willing to invest a little, these are some other great ways to keep kitty stimulated, which will help him be more calm and relaxed -

  • There are hammock-type shelves that you suction-cup to a window, great for basking in the sun and watching the world outside.
  • Another example of 'cat tv' are these fake fish tanks with plastic or digital fish. All the fun of a real tank with none of the maintenance. Unless you're down to get a real fish tank - then you'd be his hero!
  • There are lots of puzzle toys out there for cats - mental stimulation is great for draining energy, and this doesn't need you to drive the play.
  • Take about 25% of his daily dry food portion and put it in a feeder toy. There are balls that will dispense a couple of nuggets at a time while kitty plays - a very instinctual way for him to get some of his food. I also like to mix in a few treats.
  • Cat wheel. Kind of like a kitty treadmill. You can help lead him there with a toy when you're playing, or treats. He'll go on his own after that, and you can make it part of the play sessions. These things are amazing, but they're also about $200.

Hi there, what a great contest! :)

My Sofie kitty is 2, so not quite a kitten anymore, but she is such a sweetie pie and loves to play!

I found this, and thought it was really cool! Sofie likes to drink fresh water the best (directly from the faucet) and this seems like a neat alternative!

As I said, Sofie loves to play and I know she would love this mouse toy on my For the Kitty wishlist. :)

Thanks so much, I hope you and your kitty have a wonderful Christmas!

Vet student and cat lover here. Undersocialized kittens, kittens separated from their mom too early, and Bengals can all make challenging pets, so I'm not surprised you're having some trouble with that combination!

It sounds like your kitten has play aggression. Basically, he's bored and under-stimulated, and his pent-up energy is being directed towards you. Here's some information about play aggression from the SF SPCA, a well-respected behavior consultant, and VCA hospitals. I hope you'll find it useful!

My cat used to be play-aggressive, and here's what's worked for me:

  • Lots and lots of play. Aim for at least two sessions of 10-15 minutes per day of active play, and try to wear him out!

  • Try lots of toys! Kittens will have different preferences and may get bored over time, so switch things up. I'm giving some links of toys that, in my experience, cats go crazy over. They're not affiliate links, I don't work for the companies, and you can find them in pet stores as well: Cat catcher, Cat Charmer, Da Bird, and Cat Crazies A lot of cats also go crazy for foil balls and drinking straws if you throw them around. Try to have a variety of toys- wand toys, sparkle balls, bouncy balls, big catnip toys your kitten can kick, little catnip toys he can carry around, soft toys, plastic toys- you get the idea. If your cat is an ambush hunter, he may also like if you dangle a toy at one end of a cat tunnel so he can run through and grab it.

  • Try to engage in play before you see any signs of playfulness or aggression, and definitely learn to recognize those signs and act on them! I've found that while redirecting with toys is the smart thing to do, at that point, it's usually too late.

  • Cat tend to have a hunt-eat-groom-sleep cycle. Try to feed twice a day at regular times, and play for a bit first. Cats like being on a schedule.

  • More cat trees and build/buy cat shelves if you're able!

  • Wear shoes/boots in the house if you have to. Doing this saved my ankles, and I wonder if part of the reason he attacks you more than your BF is that you react more so it's more fun for him.

  • Food puzzles! Here's a site with a ton of options, including super cheap or free/recycled ones.

  • Look into clicker training! Good way to keep him physically and mentally occupied.

I hope this helps! I realize I've just thrown a ton of info at you, and my main suggestion is to take just a couple little ideas and start incorporating them. Maybe find one toy he loves and use it twice a day, scatter his food over his cat tree or in an ice cube tray, and try to keep yourself covered so he can't hurt you.

Also, definitely take him to the vet! I agree he can probably be neutered now or soon, it's always good to take new pets to the vet, and they may have behavior advice. Best of luck!

I’ve bought my kitten this (I forget how to link on mobile so sorry for the ugly link) and of course it’s the cheapest toy I’ve bought, but he will play with this until he’s panting, go eat, come back and play over and over.

You can also kinda DIY some toys. My older cat (5 years) hates anything and everything I buy for her. I bought a bungee mouse toy you can hang on doors and stuff, and tied a long ribbon through the ring. She will play with that forever. (Also linked)

The one they both agree is with the Yeowww catnip banana. They go absolutely bonkers for it. (Linked)

Some also love little chirpy toys. You can find plenty on strings, or little strong free ones (linked).

Go to town with feathers, bells, and whatnot to figure out what your kitty likes!

Crinkle balls are also a hit with both. They love the sound and it’s their jam. My youngest will play with them for hours. Be careful of which brand you buy of these though, some people have issues with the dye.

If you don’t want’em scratching on anything, try getting a couple scratching posts and place them near where they scratch the walls or whatever else. They also love being up high, so a cat tree is always great! Preferably near windows since most cats enjoy looking outside.

My cat plays hard too. Undercover (different brand names, but I have the purple one) has this rod that rotates in circles with fabric over the top. Two AA batteries will last it quite some time. The hexbug I spoke of is about the same price but you'll only find it online on amazon or ebay. It's this tiny nano but thing that zooms all over the floor (hard floors only) and when my cat bats it over it gets back up. With this one you just have to make sure it's in a space where it won't get stuck so you have to fish it out (under the fridge for example) (Nano Robotic Cat Toy (White/Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RWU17KS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9DtEybKTBTQHP)

Pheromone diffuser: Comfort Zone Feliway Diffuser Kit for Cats https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I9SI40S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kJtEybF3F4QSX

Remember, chewy.com is your friend. They may have some of these items for cheaper.

Also remember that cats don't understand punishment. If you yell or try to correct, sometimes they'll continue the behavior to seek attention even if it's negative attention. Best thing to do is to be consistent with your reactions and redirect the behavior of possible (example: cat scratches furniture---redirect by placing cat on cardboard scratch pad with catnip each time) and give your cat what he needs. Sounds like he has a lot of energy. So a toy that plays with him when you aren't able may be helpful. Pheromone diffuser was really helpful for my cat when he was so stressed from moving that he got sick.

My cat used to be extremely Velcro. He would cry like hell if I closed a door on him. So I don't anymore. He follows me from room to room most often but does his own thing. When he starts meowing I know he needs play time or food or enrichment of some kind. When I go to bed, he goes to bed. He doesn't sleep with me usually. Most often under the bed or on his cat tree.

Groupon, chewy.com, or amazon, or even EBay are good places to get the items I mentioned for less.

Nutrition is also really important for a cats health. Dry food is actually really bad for its health. Can cause urine crystals, weight gain, dehydration, etc. Even if it's just friskies it's better to have wet food than dry if you're on a budget

As for your boyfriend, try having him see a doctor to get on seroquel if he's able. Its often prescribed to people for sleeping problems. I take it, and within the hour I fall asleep and don't wake up until 8 hours later. Also tends to help with mood problems for some people. Kratom is a great natural opiate/pain reducer that is taken in pill form. You can find it at some vape/smoke shops. It's much less addictive and better long term than vicodine and its siblings.. Obviously I'm not a doctor or anything so take this advice with a grain of salt.

u/CorgisAndCheese · 4 pointsr/bengalcats

It's like a hamster wheel for cats, bengals tend to love them. And you don't have to get a second bengal, a second cat of any breed would probably be good. You also don't have to get a second cat lol.

Other than someone taking the cat, it's not more of a risk than other cats. I do think other cats being outdoor cats are too much of a risk for them as well. That said there are alternatives for letting a cat enjoy the outdoors without giving them free roam such as harness training them, having a catio for them, or a cat proof fenced in house (which is by far the most expensive and not doable without a ton of property surrounding the house but it is possible lol)

Here are some toy suggestions to help with your kittens energy:

this wand toy which I've seen make even the laziest cat chase after I don't know what it is about this toy specifically maybe it's the leather tassels or the fur thing but I've never not seen it drive a cat crazy.

This cat ball track things

This cat dancer toy with the wall attachment Trust me that the wall attachment is super important.

Really thick pony tail elastics Be sure to watch her and make sure she doesn't try eating one.

Plastic water bottle caps, Christmas ornaments, and bouncy balls are also great things for cats to bat around when they're a bit bored.

Also things for her to climb on, a small cat tree is always great.

Good luck! And do keep in mind that she'll be less energetic as she gets older.

u/oldpplfreakmeout · 2 pointsr/secretsanta

My cats love this thing. It's one of those food dispensing balls that they bat around, I call it the cat piñata. One cat even refuses to eat out of her food plate if there's still food in this ball. You'd think she'd prefer to get her food the lazy way, but nope...

One of my other cats loves this little beaver guy. She tosses it up in the air and tries to catch it. It's her absolute favorite toy, she carries it all over the house.

Her sister loves this one. I don't know what it is with them and beavers but they both love their beaver toys more than anything else I've given them. I think it's the crunchiness that attracts her to this one, she likes to carry it around and then plop on top of it and rub herself on it. I don't know.

Their mom loves the toy that comes with this scratching mat. The scratching mat itself is actually pretty great too, they love it and sometimes use is as a sleeping pad.

Have more of a routine with your kitten!
Start by having a long play session(10-20minutes) with a wand toy that you only bring out during this time. Have a variety of like 2 or 3 different wand toys, my favorites are:
Da Bird - this one is great because the wand part is super long so you can sit while still making your cat cover a lot of ground! ,Cat Dancer - For the feline who likes trash like toys but seriously this thing reminds me of a moth if you move it just right, cat charmer - just a great toy very durable great for cats who just like string!

After your long play session give your cat his dinner and he should be good for the night!
Cats natural routine is to hunt, eat, groom, sleep.
If you are still having issues you could try leaving out different types of cat enrichment to keep your cat entertained through the night. HERE is an article about the importance of enriching your cat and a few ideas!

u/waitwuh · 1 pointr/CatTraining

>do you have any recommendations for things he might be more inclined to play with on his own?

Yes! This circuit toy is a wonderful example of a self-play type of toy that can keep a kitten's attention a bit longer than balls or knit toys, because in the cat's perspective it keeps moving- but less predictably so- after the paws are off :P. As a bonus - it's pretty quiet, and your cat isn't going to lose this one under a dresser or something (because it can't leave the track). This toy was a savoir during my own cat's super-playful kitten period.

Electronic motion toys such as this one are also a possibly more-enticing option for your cat. (Though - the "motion madness" toy the same maker puts out isn't really worth it, IMO, if you see a link to that- it's loud and get struck on things easily).

You can also find corrugated cardboard scratchers that have holes in the bottom of then with dangling feathers or shiny balls inside, such as this one (although i have a cheaper version I got from wall-mart). The benefit of this combo is that your cat may be inclined to go scratch the scratcher and then get "distracted" by the play item, so basically it increases the chance the cat will play with it.

Additionally, you didn't seem to mention any toys that aren't on the floor and are perhaps a dangling attraction - that can matter a lot, as some cats perfer that type of play, and even those that don't can get tired of just one type. Do you have any dangling attractions, such as doornob hanging scratchers, or even posts that include a dangling toy of sorts, such as this one? They also make these tent-like contraptions with dangling toys. If you've ever heard of the "play types" such as "bird, mouse, bug, snake.." - that's ideally what you want to emulate with your options. Even if your kitten prefers to hunt "mice" - chasing a bird or a bug every now and then can break things up more.

Additionally, if you don't have something like an "activity mat", it might be something to look out for on the cheap. Or those tunnels - both can offer a different type of experience (the crinkly kind, I guess).

u/extra_supervery · 2 pointsr/knitting

Bring him home and set him up in one room for a couple days, especially since he's little. Let him explore that room and get comfortable before you let him have free reign of the house, it can be really overwhelming.

One of mine really liked to bite- there are many cat chew toys of rubber/mesh/catnip/whatever at Petco/Petsmart. It doesn't hurt so much when they're kittens and it's cute but their adult teeth are not so cute. Also, he indiscriminately bit everything. Cardboard boxes? Yep. Power cords? Yep. Cushions? Yep. Toes? Yep.

If he is adventurous, once he's really settled in, get him a harness and leash and take him for walks! Much like dogs, cats have a bunch of energy, and walking satiates some of their natural curiosity.

These springs are some of my very favorite toys and they haven't gotten tired of them yet, but they have lost about 15 under the sofa and fridge. This bird wand is also amazing.

Also- start brushing/grooming him now. It's also recommended to brush their teeth, which I was never successful with (have two skittish cats). But at least brushing, so that they get accustomed to it.

u/Crystaleyes · 3 pointsr/cats

Keep giving her lots and lots of patience and love, she'll eventually come around. Remember, though, cats all have their own personalities, it's possible she may never be a cuddly "lap cat". We have four cats, and each are different when it comes to how they interact with us. If you don't already, be sure to set aside play time with both cats. Find toys that will hold her interest, that will really get her active and jumping around, such as: https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Fit-Life-Retractable-Feathers/dp/B01ANUU12I/ref=sr_1_7?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1492094563&sr=1-7&keywords=jackson+galaxy+cat+toys
After play time, give some special treats that you know she'll love. After a while, especially when she sees her brother interacting in play time and treat time with you, I think you'll see an improvement. Just be patient and loving (as I'm sure you are!) ;)

u/ColSamCarter · 1 pointr/aww

Ah, make sure you never have the toy in your hands. Get string or toys on sticks, like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LZUCIL8?psc=1&smid=A1D78GG83CI1AS

My cat is very well socialized and loving, but she is NEVER allowed to play with a toy in my hand because she will bite me and scratch me. Vets will tell you never to play with a cat while you're on the floor with them or with toys in your hand. They should be playing chase/fight with the toy, not with you.

As for why he doesn't seem to play the reason your cat probably doesn't seem to like playtime is that you toss a toy and then stop playing. The toy is "dead" at that point, and his instinct kicks in to stop playing. A "live" toy on a stick would give you both some interaction time, as would string. A laser pointer toy is also a great idea! All of these things should cost less than $10 and could greatly improve your relationship with your cat.

And like I said, do it at the same time every day, even if he's hesitant at first. He'll start getting interested if he learns to expect it. Cats love routine.

How comfortable s she with touching her paws? I'd suggest soft paws if she's comfortable, or you could have the vet do it for you. They still allow cats to retract their claws, so they're humane, but they can't scratch up your apartment. I suggest this only because it seems so stressful & it's a quick fix for now.

For food, maybe a toy that forces your cat to play with it would fit her personality. Maybe a cat toy like this, or this? You'd have the problem of her knocking them around... but well, that's the point. It's meant to be enriching & fun for a cat like yours. You can put a food mat underneath it, so that when treats fall you don't have to worry about your floor getting dirty.

I don't have any advice for the water dish though, since you already switched it to a heavier one. Good luck!

I love cats :)

For his loneliness, have you tried giving him an item of yours or your girlfriend's while you're out? Like putting a sweatshirt or a small blanket on the floor? Having your scent around to cuddle with might ease his mind somewhat. I've heard the scent of lavender is comforting for cats as well, just in general.

To make his bed more enticing at night, maybe try one of these. It's basically a stuffed animal for cats that you can throw in the microwave for 30 seconds and stick in their bed. It smells good to them. My kitties love it! We got it at PetCo. If he still insists on sleeping with you guys, maybe try making the top of the bed more attractive to him (by your heads) so he's in a less dangerous spot while he's still so small.

Hope that helps! Congratulations on your new family member!

u/crowek · 2 pointsr/cats

I recommend the Feliway and various other products similar to it.
On top of that I'd also consider giving her a safe space that she recognizes as comfortable. Somewhere she'll enjoy sleeping. Most cats like a box with a blanket, for example.

You can also get various behavioural toys that may help. Here is an example. I had one for my dog that was a little stuffed puppy. It had an electronic beating heart and a heat pack you'd warm up in the microwave. They'd snuggle up to it as a companion.

Try one of these in her safe space with a fleece blanket.

I think everyone reaches a point when they just feel like they have had enough, you simply tossed him into another room where it was okay for him to throw up. You didn't throw him up against a wall, smack/hit him or try to hurt him on purpose you wanted him out of the room and if he wasn't getting out himself it was kind of like an instinct to toss him into the other room. I don't see it hurting him at all and I am sure he landed on his feet just fine, you'd be surprised the height cats can fall from and be perfectly fine.

How are they toy wise? Maybe you could buy one or two of those interactive cat toys, like this or this to help keep them more engaged with each other and with a toy so they don't feel so needy?

u/LoveaBook · 2 pointsr/CatAdvice

Try a free-feeding puzzle feeder. My cat got to a chonking 16 pounds (which is large for her size). We purchased a Catit puzzle feeder and she lost the weight in a few months. And she’s maintained herself at a perfect (for her) weight of 8.5 lbs for over 2 years now. Because my girl is a natural borne ✨Diva✨ my husband was against it at first, but it’s cheap, so...what’s to lose? I spent a couple minutes poking my fingers in and knocking bits down to show her the idea and she took to it like a fish to water. We now have a second one, of a different style and different maker, that we put elsewhere in the house and fill with a different flavor/type of food. Both my cats love them. The idea is to prevent them from easily eating too much when bored and to make eating more stimulating, like a hunt.

They can eat as much as they want for as long as they want, but they have to earn every last kibble of it. My (former) fat cat seemed to live in front of the feeder at first - knocking food down most of her waking hours. But now it’s just a few times a day, and maybe a single tablespoon’s worth of food at a time.

This is another Catit puzzle feeder. They also have a variety of puzzle feeder toys - if you’re OK with bits of kibble all over the house. This is just one example.

(We actually just had to put our former chonker on a special renal diet. (She’s 18). We picked her favorite puzzle feeder and changed just it to the new, specialty food and left the normal food in the other. My two girls haven’t had a stitch of trouble telling which is which. I think the only downside - as they see it - is that they’ve lost the diversity of two feeders. (According to the stuff I’ve read, they recommend multiple feeders spaced around the house to engage their instinct to search out food.) But I’ll be damned if I’m going to have multiples for each type of food spaced around the house. After all, there’s only so much room in my house.)

u/alienumnox · 3 pointsr/Pets

Not eventually. ASAP. Getting a female cat fixed will make her life, and your life, much easier. Please get her fixed. I know it seems silly, but if there are unfixed males in your neighborhood, they will sense her hormones and will spray the outside of your house and that will drive your male cat crazy. Get her fixed. If the cost is an issue, check out helpful funding programs at your local shelter.

Why don't you intend to have them indoors forever? Indoor cats live for 12-20 years, where as outdoor cats live for about 3-5. It's safer to keep your cats indoors. Please reconsider making them outdoor cats.

Indoor entertainment, besides interactive toys, is you. How often and for how long each day do you play with your cats? They should get at least a 20-30 minute play session with you each day. Preferably before you feed them at night. I realize you said you work long hours, but you need to make time for your pets. Here are some good interactive toys: One, Two, Three.

The male is wandering around talking to himself because he is bored.

u/kiralovescats · 1 pointr/Pets

My kitten is similar in that she sometimes wants us to play with her, otherwise she'll go off trying to climb on the dining room table or something.

She really likes these plastic spiral things. She LOVES them, she'll play with them constantly and she even plays fetch with them. I also got a Cat's Meow as a gift and the cats both like it. It's battery-operated so you can't use it constantly, but when it's on you can pretty much leave it on while they play with it. I know they also sell some automated laser-pointer and feather-stick-type toys that work on batteries/plugs. They're usually meant for if you want kitty to have something to do when you aren't home, but if she's demanding that much play then they may work for you. :)

u/Moarisa · 3 pointsr/AskVet

No medical advice re the vomiting (tech here, not a vet!) but some suggestions for pacing out meals. I've heard of people having success with putting a solid plastic ball in the bowl with the kibble. Kitty has to eat around it and can slow things down. Some special food bowls have raised areas or ridges inside so he will have to work a bit more to get the food.

There are several kinds of treat balls that you can put food in. They usually have some kind of adjustment you can make in hole size so the kibble comes out faster or slower. You can start the holes big while kitty gets used to it and gradually make them smaller for him.

You can also buy a variety of other food dispensing toys like the CatIt Digger which he will have to work at to get food out of.

I also have a cat who would gobble down everything in sight without a breath in between if given the chance and now use a treat ball and the digger to give him his breakfast every day.

u/littlestray · 1 pointr/Pets

Follow your vets orders and run major changes/additions/subtractions to those orders by your vet first.

Consider a slow-feeder bowl (I have this one in black) and a pet feeder ball like this. Of course, for a dieting cat the ball should be less treats, more food. This will play on your cat's natural hunting instinct and provide some physical and mental stimulation.

And this might not be relevant, but some people regularly give their cats treats just because. If you give your cats treats, cut back only as a reward and in smaller quantities, for example three treat bits after clipping their claws instead of a pile every day because good kitties deserve nice things.

$0-5: these cute cat toys because all our kitties need lovings too.

$5-10: This funny dish scrubber because we all deserve to feel like a princess or fairy while making magic in the kitchen such as getting rid of grease gunk.

$10-20: This Sheldon Cooper shirt because nerdy humor is sexy.

$20-50: Adopt a Sloth because the money goes to donating towards the animal and you get to ADOPT A SLOTH..do I really need to explain why thats so awesome?!

First, buy this. My cats are all indoor cats only, and I worried about their sanity too. They LOVE this. They play with it so much. You can set a timer too, so it can go for a while and you can go to work without leaving it on ALL day.

You might just have a cat obsessed with you. One of my cats is IN LOVE with me and whenever she even hears me come home, won't stop meowing. She follows me everywhere and hates my husband for "taking up" her mommy time (we assume).

Try the toy, it might really help. Good luck!

I have gotten a lot off of Amazon. Like a bunch of cheap cat toys. A screen for my deck door. A comforting book. The world's best chocolate covered cherries. My favorite coffee. This fur throw to go on this chair. And this playpen/sleeper for my been nephew. Amazon's so good.

First cat is Sun. Hes a chubby mommas boy. He snuggles with me every night. He's 12. The second cat is Maya, she has a huge personality. She cant meow, she just squeeks. Its adorable. She also has this thing with her arm that it always has to be stretched out. Its so long! Haha. My linked item is a treat ball to get your cat working for their treats. I think it would be great for Sun, since he is super lazy.

Remember to scoop the litterbox everyday. Cleaning poop from cat's paws isn't an easy job. And change the litter completely once in every 1-2 months and clean with soap.

My cat sleeps next or on chair close to me, do what ever works for you.

I let my cat roam free in the living room but I close the door to my bedroom because there's wires and electronics that I don't want him to play with. Not completely necessary if you don't have those.

I recommend you buy a treat ball such as this one and fill it with a few light treats. It will give the cat something to do while you are gone. Be sure to play with her a lot when you get back.

u/ender17 · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

I recently bought these for my cat (cheap!). One of the reviews said that if you stretch them out a bit, cats will chew on them instead of wires. My cat has never chewed wired and was not very interested in them, but he gets bored easily so I have to keep trying new things. His favorite toys are these milk cap rings. Enjoy your new little buddy :)

I recommend getting a companion toy like https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Pet-Love-Snuggle-Behavioral/dp/B001V7UHG8 to mimic the heartbeat and warmth of their mother. I got the snuggle puppy version for my dog when she was a puppy because she had separation anxiety and it provided her with great comfort.

I suggest these, one of my cats is obsessed and likes to fetch them down the hall. He will literally play with it by himself for an hour though.

If you leave them on a flat surface they roll and bounce when the cats bat and play with them. They also really seem to like batting them back and forth underneath kitchen tables and chairs.

Best cat toy ever.

u/Sieberella · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I also take a lot of convincing to buy myself something! I sit there and put all kinds of different stuff into my cart and then "Well... do I need that or would I rather eat?" pops into my head lol. Also, as one Lush addict to another, you can make a wishlist on Lush.com and it has your address and stuff stored into it so people can gift you from your Amazon wishlist, because it takes them straight to your Lush wishlist! Also you're kitty totally needs this!

To be honest this sounds like a terrible reason to give up your cat. If you can't be home much to entertain him make the house cat worthy so he can enjoy it when your not home. Give him some cat shelves plant some cat grass and use some automatic toys to play with when your not home.

So maybe it's not the digging itself, but the process of retrieving something that the cat likes? I'd try with one of those toys where you put (dry) food inside and the cat has to try and get it out (treat dispensers). They range from the basic ball with holes in it to more complicated ones. Here are some cool ideas I found:

https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Design-Senses-Food-Maze/dp/B004G9L1H2

If I were you I'd try to DIY the toys first, because the cat might end up not using them. Also, I suggest you put new food inside, so the cat will be more interested to try it. Or just not her regular food that it can eat without digging.

Da Bird drives all of my kids nuts. I have an old toy that's similar and the feathers are long gone but they still chase it like crazy. Basically a stick with a string tied to one end and then some feathers on the end of the string. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LZUCIL8?psc=1

I used to play cat rodeo with my old cat. Stand in the center of the room and swing around in a circle and she would chase that thing until she dropped. I miss her, she was a psycho but I loved her dearly.

u/helgamcadams · 1 pointr/cats

It sounds like he is bored and needs an outlet for all his energy! Do you play with him much? My cats love wand toys (this is the best one we've tried - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LZUCIL8) and they get really tired out after playing and are mellow for the rest of the evening! (Disclaimer: not a cat expert, but have my own furbabies and have watched a lot of Jackson Galaxy/My Cat From Hell) :)

u/pruney-candy · 1 pointr/Pets

Sounds like she's pretty domesticated. You should provide her some toys. A bored cat is a destructive cat . They don't have to be super expensive either, since they get "lost" real quick. You can get them from the dollar store, or Amazon or Ebay has a huge collection for cheap, like this listing https://www.amazon.com/Fashions-Talk-Variety-Kitty-pieces/dp/B01AHM6P18/ref=lp_2975303011_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1484419679&sr=1-1 You can even make toys with stuff at home, like toilet paper rolls, or left over yarn or tissue paper. Just google DIY cat toys.

u/theRacistEuphemism · 6 pointsr/Pets

Agreed on including some wet food, and males are especially prone to urinary problems so get that extra water in wherever you can!

I have a 9.5lb female (so probably smaller than your cat will be if it's a Maine Coon :P) who gets about 2oz - just under half of a 5.5oz can - of wet food twice a day, 12 hours apart. At the end of the night, I give her about 30 pieces of kibble hidden all over her tower, in toys, in her carrier, and in a kibble ball just to keep her busy when I go to bed.

I add water to her wet food to boost her hydration even though she's a good drinker if she's had dry food. When I lived with a middle aged male cat who already had kidney failure and constipation, I would make his wet food into a soup and luckily he ate it right up. I'm a big fan of taking advantage of wet food to get them to drink as much as possible even if the resulting soup looks nasty. :P

In my experience, grain-free foods (and lower carb/higher protein in general) have led to smaller poops and more satiety. I don't mind feeding wet foods that contain some rice, but I avoid corn like the plague because I found those made for the stinkiest poops. I got my cat as a student, so I took to feeding the Petsmart brand Grreat Choice's pates and cases of Friskies pates from CostCo and Petsmart's Simply Nourish kibble. All very affordable and pretty good quality especially for their prices, but I throw in some splurge brands like Petcurean Go! to mix it up too.

u/sigamalito · 2 pointsr/Pets

Walking is an excellent idea, particularly for an active breed like a manx!

I would also suggest a few extra things :

  • interactive feeding toys. She will have to use her brain to get food out of a toy, and that will make her less bored and get some energy out. Just be sure to adjust her regular feedings so that she isn't getting extra calories, or even replacing the food dish with an interactive toy or interactive dish.
    Example 1 .example 2
  • The SSSCAT training aid these work well to set boundries within the house for some cats. You could consider placing these next to your vents.
  • Try to wear her out mentally and physically. I'm betting she would probably be a good cat to try to clicker train to do tricks. Clicker training can be excellent physical and mental stimulation. It sounds weird to train a cat and I've never done it with mine, but I see people who do it all the time online. Karen Pryor (she popularized clicker training) has a ton of cat training tutorials.
  • This tape : Sticky Paws can be put on the slats of your vents. Most cats don't like the sticky feeling on their paws and will stop messing with what you put on them....this didn't work for my cat. My cat just licks the tape.
u/ashleypenny · 1 pointr/bengalcats

We spent a lot of money on toys but our bengals Tend to play with them briefly and ignore them.

The things they want to play with for longer are the cheapest - potato chip bags tied in a knot, thrown for them. Tie string around one and they go mad for that too. You can get these too which are inexpensive and they love

Colorful Springs Wide 10 Pk Ethical Pet https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000CMKHDG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Rlu0Cb7E64DVG

Combine any of these with a cat tunnel that makes crinkling sounds and you’re probably set.

u/Amonette2012 · 1 pointr/PetAdvice

Is getting a second cat and shutting them out of your bedroom an option? Young cats in particular are often active at night - mine sometimes race up and down the stairs chasing each other in the middle of the night. Having two means they play with each other more.

Also, check out robot toys that you can leave for your cat to play with. Sounds like she's just playful and active at a normal time and just needs stuff she can play with - she has no concept of 'keeping you awake' and has no idea why you're spraying her and booting her out. From her perspective it's playtime and everything is a toy. This needs to be diverted so she can play alone, plus possibly a companion to play with.

Here are some toys mine get on well with (sorry its all Amazon links but the pet stores in our town are a rip off so I tend to shop online and am a creature of habit - you might find cheaper alternatives in your area/ from other retailers):

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WP7F8YC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07415PHRW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006N9I68/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (one of mine goes nuts for this one and I have about 5 of these around the house)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000N9W7HW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is possible to rig these with switches your cat can learn to operate - I will make a separate post on how I did that at some point but essentially cat robot toys can be rigged with basic levers that your can can switch on, and if your cat watches you switch it on enough times they will try and do it too. For example for the SmartyKat Hot Pursuit Cat Toy I hotglued another toy (a rubber ball with a stalky bit sticking out) to the top of it and tied on a bit of string, so my cat can pull the string and it turns on the toy.

It doesn't help to wear them out a bit with a laser pointer before you go to bed either - young cats have a lot of energy to burn off so if you can tire them out a bit during the day they're more likely to be sleepy at night. Mine are about 2 and a half now and they are starting to be more sleepy at night, the romping around the house is getting a bit rarer. Hang in there :)

u/CandygramForMongo1 · 6 pointsr/cats

These are a huge hit with our youngest: kitty springs http://www.amazon.com/Ethical-Durable-Plastic-Colorful-Springs/dp/B000CMKHDG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1412664646&sr=8-2&keywords=spring+cat+toys
Buy a pack of several-- they disappear all over the house.

Also, Da Bird is a fun interactive toy that will help burn off some of that kitten energy before bedtime: http://go-cat.com Buy an extra "bird" or two for backup. They hold up surprisingly well for being made of feathers, but they still get pretty beat up.

u/1337GameDev · 1 pointr/CATHELP

Oof...

This will likely be an annoying process.

It could be a variety of things:

  1. Health issue
  2. cats don’t like brand/kind of litter
  3. cats don’t like shape, color, etc of litter box
  4. cats are bored and see it riles you
  5. cats are intact males and are marking
  6. cats are altered males who developed the marking habit before being altered
  7. cats found a scent there once, and now go there out of habit
  8. cats hate locations of litter boxes
  9. cats are stressed from something
  10. Cats want the litter box cleaner
  11. Cats don’t have a good diet
  12. They are just unruly and do this for fun / laziness

First and foremost, eliminate health issues, and take them for a vet checkup and do standard blood work to check for abnormalities.

I would recommend renting / buying an upright carpet shampoo machine.
I bought gf a bissel one for $350 and it works very well.

Then, after shampooing, use an enzymatic cleaner, such as “Natures miracle.”

Then, I would look at the little box. Move the box closer to where they pee, and away from noises, running water, etc.

    Then, I’d try new litter.
Cats can be sensitive to the smell, dust / powder, and even the grain size.

You can also attempt to clean the litter box more, and scoop it every few hours. Me and my gf bought the “Litter Robot,” but a lot of people can’t justify the $425 price tag to have it auto scoop for you.

You can also get a different litter box.
My cats love our “igloo” style one (also stops our dog from eating the cat droppings).

Then, I’d invest in a cat tree, with 3 levels to it. Chewy has a decent one for $80 delivered that me and gf bought 2 of for our cats.

Some random toys also work well if they are bored, a variety: a catnip infused one, a ball, a spring shaped one, a mouse, a string (this can be controversial as it can encourage the cat to chew long slender objects - such as cords, and shoelaces), and a “ball stuck inside a bowl” kind of toy.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077B9PHKD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_zd6qDb0X9EEDQ

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005UMC1SC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Gg6qDb5YM13YQ

Then, try and get a toy that is some kind of mouse or feather, on a rope with a stick and exercise them for a few minutes every day.

You can also look at their diet, and if they are not getting enough water (which sounds odd, but cats can act out in odd ways when their diet isn’t correct). You can try wet food, if you are t doing that, and adding a little extra water to it to form a small soup. Watch their reaction over time, and if they pee more, this might not be the issue (they may pee a few times with the increased water intake, so watch over a few days if you do this).

If you have an older style basement, with a “French drain,” your basement might be moist, and encourages mold growth, and could be stressing the cats. You can attempt to fix this with a dehumidifier (sealing some ingress points in the basement). This is assuming they pee in the basement that is.

Hopefully this helps. In the end, it might not, and the cats just might be a bit unruly, which does suck :/

Edit: I just noticed, the litter box is on a different floor.

Cats “should” have a litter box PER floor, and realistically one extra per cat (most cats get get away with sharing).
u/tropicalsnow · 1 pointr/BabyBumps

We have a cat that eats too fast then vomits, and we got one of these to slow her down. https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Senses-2-0-Digger-Cats/dp/B015P13QMM It definitely helps, she has to pull each piece of food out with her paw. It took her a little while to figure it out, but now she's a pro. Still a little bit pukey but much, much better. I'm actually thinking of also buying another one made by the same company that is shaped like a tree, and alternating them every few months.

u/englishamerican · 1 pointr/AskWomen

Aw man! That sounds so boring for them! Well my bf and I have an apartment and we bought these (link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01AHM6P18/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1462918408&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=20+cat+toys&dpPl=1&dpID=51EEKYiUXTL&ref=plSrch) and your cats like balls/mice/etc I would definitely suggest getting this. You could even introduce them 2 at a time and let them play with them for a few days and then add one and take one away so it's always new stuff!

u/mr_jellyneck · 1 pointr/Pets

Sometimes it takes my cats (both about a year old, have had them for 10 months) a little while before they take to a new toy so if they don't like something now, they may grow to like it later.

However, two toys they absolutely love and never get bored with are springs and a ball track, similar to this but they come in many different sizes.

I also often give my cats pieces of meat as a treat- chicken, sushi, lunch meats. Only in small amounts and they've never gotten diarrhea from it. Keep the amounts small and it shouldn't be an issue for him. Pet stores also sell kitten milk for relatively cheap if you want to give him something special.

As for chewing on cables or scratching things he shouldn't, just be persistent in shooing him from doing those things. It can be a pain in the ass sometimes but just be vigilant. Spraying them with water or canned air is really effective. My cats had to learn that destroying certain things was wrong and it took some time. Now I just have to give them a "hey!" and they stop.

If you notice them scratching up your furniture, give him something of his own that he can destroy. My cats love cardboard boxes and those cardboard scatchpads. I also bought them this small cat tree that they absolutely LOVE.

I had never owned cats before and used to think they were all just assholes and that's just not true. They can be very loving and obedient pets. You just have to work to get the behavior you want.

One of these would let you get rid of your rice cooker, slow cooker, pressure cooker, with less space needed.

Maybe even your hot pot, Im not actually sure what a hot pot is :D

  • I also replaced my container blender and food processor with a Bamix stick blender.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bamix-Deluxe-Processor-Black-watts/dp/B001R4BBVK

As a blender its great and just sits in its stand taking up no room.
It comes with little containers and blades for when you need to chop onions and stuff, but in all honesty by the time you've washed and cleaned those containers, you may aswell have just chopped it manually with a knife and chopping board, which is what I do

I don't use a panini press, but I have a cast iron griddle pan plus a flat Lodge pan. Feels like the griddle wouldn't be that much different if you apply pressure, and is at least multi-purpose instead of a big single-purpose device taking up room.

I can tell by your title you know the nature of cats make BIFL toys hard. That said theres a few options that have survived our cats first year of kitten hood (much play)

  1. definitely a laser pointer.
  2. Primary toy we have one of these https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Fit-Life-Retractable-Feathers/dp/B01ANUU12I.

Theres a couple different models, we find this one with the screw connection work the best. While it’s not fully BIFL, the handle has lived up to its sturdy claim and we can easily replace parts that broke or are used up. We have to buy or make replacement attachments because my cats love killing them with bites. I’ve also tied string, ribbon and random garbage on the end. The lobster clasp at the end has been replaced once and I expect to have to replace the string at some point. This was infinitely better than the jackson galaxy models that don’t have replaceable parts. We went through 3 of them before we found this one.

  3. https://www.chewy.com/cat-dancer-original-cat-toy/dp/49382 This one drives our cats crazy. Because its hard to catch, they haven’t really had a chance to destroy the little cardboard bits. Once they do I plan to replace it with cut bag handles or little slivers of cardboard.

  4. Bouncy balls, only 1 of my cats likes these and they like to chase/bat them not chew so I expect to keep them as long as I can find them. I usually discover them under furniture while cleaning.

  5. Things you make. I’ve recycled old shirts into tshirt yarn, cardboard, bits of ribbon and bags and random shit to test out on my cats. They don’t last and most of them aren’t hits and at least I’m not buying them!

Good-luck making your kitties BIFL! The last advice is to have a local cat owners group where you can trade toys. Some of our toys have been such duds with our cats, we pass them around to the cat owners at work and usually there’s a cat who loves it.

Edit: noticed your comment on automated balls. It really depends on your cat. We tried that and a few other automated toys and in general they got bored fast. They never seem fast enough or random enough. We’ve given them away since they just take up space but it might be different for you.

How about springs such as these. They can both spin and bounce. If she's not into mice, you can also try plastic balls (some of them with jingle bells inside like these) or crinkle balls since some cats enjoy the sounds they make.

That. I thought it would be something our kitten wouldn't ever use, but I got it just in case as he was only five weeks old when we brought him home. He's six months old now and still carries it around the house.

It has a fake heartbeat and the ability to put a heating pad in it so the kitten will cuddle with it instead of you. It really is great.

You don't need to play with him for very long. Just try to get him panting before a meal at least once a day. Use one of these and it should take like 15 minutes. It's really fun too.

Would a slow feeder toy be a possibility? I let my cats forage food out of one and it's legit just sit and use one paw to get the food out.

This is pretty much my cat arsenal. Not sure if these will work with your man but figured i'd put them out there. I also buy cat sticks for them to chew on but usually you have to supervise them because big chunks get chewed off.

The one and only time I've ever seen a mountain lion in the wild, I was hunting yotes in Arizona setting up on a cat toy that would jumble around every once in a while (not the exact one I linked, but similar) and then I would make a distressed rabbit call. I was having a particularly bad day, not seeing anything and was getting up to move when something to my left moved suddenly. When my eyes finally figured it out there was a gorgeous mountain lion that had been stalking my toy, was easily in my field of vision, and yet I had no idea it was even there. She calmly slinked off into the brush without a sound when she saw me move.

I suppose you could try locating some tracks and then setting up a similar scenario with a predator call. I know that bobcats, foxes, yotes, and even raccoons, badgers, and bears will show up to one. I don't know if what happened to me was a fluke or if they also show up, but it may be worth a try.

If we're talking about slow cookers, then praise be to the gods of pressure cookers!

Instantpots have gotten VERY popular over the pond here, but they are not cheap. However they're very versitile, moreso than a slow cooker

u/i_miss_old_reddit · 3 pointsr/Delightfullychubby

Got a cheap version of it in this multipack:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AHM6P18

Ended up taking the ball and feathers off the end, and gluing magnets to the end of the stick and the ball. Now when the cat 'catches' the feather, they come off the stick. He triumphantly carries the feathers around the house.

The mouse wand toy is also my annoying/hyperactive yet cute/adorable cat's favorite toy. I also have the other toy you linked and yeah it's not a toy he plays with every day, maybe twice a week if we're lucky.

I recently bought this for my cats. It's still not as entertaining as the wand toy but it usually works for about 5-10 minutes every couple of days, especially when i tie different things to the end of it.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EZTCW94/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But no matter what toy you get him. You and Eleanor will always be his favorite "toys" so just get in the habit of having a designated play time where you wear him out. Also, there's another toy similar go go cat wand mouse toy which has a longer string to it and is a bird instead. I use this one when I'm lying on the couch or in my computer chair because I can idly flick it around (due to the longer string) while I'm watching something else.

These springs are awesome for fetch. but I've woken up to a pile of them by my head.

u/library_pixie · 142 pointsr/WhatsWrongWithYourCat

My cat was doing the same. She ate so fast she wasn't even fully digesting it... according to the vet, it wasn't even hitting her stomach before she puked it up. (She said because it was "tubed and undigested" that implies it's not going past the esophagus.)

We bought her this, and it's really helped the problem. She still throws up about once a week, but it's no longer daily. It took her about two months to really start using it (putting treats in it really helped), and it helped that I took out the top level at first. (Once she got better at using it, I put the top level back.)

If your cat has the same problem, I recommend it!

u/lilac-ghost · 2 pointsr/cats

Look into catit feeders. They come in different shapes, we have one that looks like a cylinder sort of, and one with various height tubes. They have to work for their food and it seems to keep them from eating too much cat digger

Get your cat some puzzle feeders that vary in difficulty and start meal-feeding your cat exclusively. Breakfast lunch and dinner, nothing else. My cats have never been overweight, but they used to incessantly beg for food.

Jackson Galaxy is an amazing vegan, cat behaviorist (who also had a gastric bypass for a weight problem, himself- so he’s got some empathy for overweight pets) and if you look him up you’ll get a lot of good information about how to parent your cat.

Here’s one of my favorite puzzle feeders because of it’s difficulty. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G9L1H2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_.oFnDbC9T56PC
But I’d recommend a variety. You can also make your puzzles out of trash if you can’t afford to buy a bunch of puzzles.

If you feed him a late dinner in a difficult puzzle it’ll keep him occupied for quite a while. Then you’ll have fewer hours of whining to endure.

I got one of these for my chubby cat. He lays on the floor and rolls the ball back and forth down the length of his arm, barely lifting his head to eat the pieces that fall out. Sort of defeats the purpose there, Fat Man...

We also got him one of these and he just hip-checks the damn thing, knocking half of the food out in a single shot. I'd be annoyed, but I'm too impressed by his ingenuity.

I wanted to order one, but I thought €120 was quite a steep price increase from a regular slow cooker that I ordered, which is plenty for me and seeing that I live in Europe, I didn't want to risk having to pay toll when ordering from outside of Europe and previous experience with a faulty Slow Cooker made me not want to get into another RMA and this time being from a store outside of EU.

The other cat might benefit from a food dish that forces him to eat like scooper cat. I tried one of these for my puker (so I didn’t have to feed him 10 pieces of kibble at a time), but he hated it. THIS HOWEVER (1/4 cup size) works wonders (I just leave it on the floor, he knocks em out a few at a time. Super noisy, but it slows him down and I don’t have to monitor him)

These are great ways to deal with feline separation anxiety, if you can afford one. If you can't, you can also make them.

Basically, put it down before you leave a room, show your cat it, get him interested in it. Then leave. Do this a couple of times a week for a month or so and he'll stop associating you leaving with being anxious and upset.

u/Minemose · 3 pointsr/catbellies

u/flutes_of_chi · 3 pointsr/Pets

This looks like a good design. I got this one a while back that I had to modify because my cats kept tipping it over to get to the food. I took off the base and replaced it with a wood post glued on top of a board (so that the cats would have to sit on the board to reach the food, which prevented it from being tipped). They hated it and would cry at night to bed fed.

I'd really appreciate a new flash drive, I have to take classes online to finish high school and a flash drive is required. My parents wont buy me a new after I lost one and broke the other within three years. >.<

I could also use this three-in-one charger. My ipod charger broke last night and my phone charger is starting to go as well. :(

One last thing, this chewy cat toy, my cat has recently taken up chewing everything he can get his paws on - that's how my ipod charger broke, so this would be really helpful as well.

I had the same problem - one skinny cat and one fat cat. I had to figure out how to give them both food. I didn't want the skinny cat to starve, and also wanted the fat cat to not just be able to pig out until the food was all gone.

I got them a food puzzle - they have to navigate the food out of the feeder one piece at a time. Since we got it, my fat cat went from 18.5 pounds to 14 pounds!

My girlfriend's two cats go ballistic if there isn't food available at all times.

My cat eats til she pukes, too. To try and prevent that, we bought two puzzle feeders. My cat also tends to harass us until we go with her to monitor her eating.

Since we got the puzzle feeders, our cats eat a lot less food overall. But mine still needs a chaperone.
