Alright, after an hour of searching and compiling, I’ve come up with an AMD-based build with Full RGB aesthetics.

This Processor has an insane value for the money. This will handle moderate workstation, browsing, virtualization, and heavy gaming. I feel like you would benefit from a 3600X rather than a 3600 as it has better stock and OC speeds. The 3600X is only $40 more than the 3600 on Amazon.

The 5700 XT will absolutely shred 1080p gaming and excel at 1440p gaming. You can easily achieve 144+FPS at 1080p resolution & max settings on Fortnite, Rust, Rainbow Six Siege, CS:GO, Dota, COD, and Minecraft (with heavy mods) and 100+FPS on many AAA titles. In addition to that, the 5700 XT can even handle 4K gaming in games such as Forza, eSport titles, GTA, etc.
I went with the Mech OC model as it is the best model that is still in stock. It’ll provide better thermals compared to blower-styled reference cards.

This motherboard is a mid-range X570 board. It will enable you to have a very decent OC and RGB Sync experience. I would strongly recommend getting a X570 to get PCIe 4.0 support and bypassing the hassle of a BIOS update.

The last thing you want to do in a build is to cheap out on the power supply. The EVGA SuperNOVA series is one of the best PSU series out there. The G3 650W is fully modular, as well as having a 80+ Gold rating. I also believe there is a 10 year warranty of this model. Also, there is currently a $20 rebate on Newegg for this power supply.

The KG241Q is a 1ms, 144hz 1080p monitor with a TN-panel. While the colors are not as vibrant as IPS-Panel monitors, you will get better responsiveness with the TN panels. Also, the KG241Q features AMD FreeSync technology, which can be used to your advantage to reduce stuttering and tearing during gaming, since you have an AMD GPU.

Hey there! PC making is something I enjoy doing mainly as I know what's going into a build then so if it fucks up it's all on me too :P

The one thing I'm a big advocate of when it comes to builds is balance. Some of the things you have are nice in the list but some parts you're paying more for when you won't get a noticeable kickback on them with the other parts.

If the $1000 is just for the rig itself (not monitors, keyboard, mouse etc) I'd personally go for something like this:

• OS: Everyone always forgets to budget for it :P I'd still say to buy Win 7 64-bit. You can buy just the 64-bit install disc on amazon for $97.25 normally the logic is to get the most recent OS but win 8 has that much extra stuff running that just isn't needed you'll spend half the time ripping pieces out of it ;) side note: I'd advise creating a USB boot drive for the install, download the SP1 ISO from here (that's the MS host Digital River) and just use the CD-key from your purchase to validate.
  
  
• Processor: intel i5-4570 - really solid i5 which if you're after gaming and just general use it does the job more than happily. Can get them all over but tend to be around $200
  
  
• Cooler - use the stock part that comes with the i5 above. You're not overclocking as the processor doesn't allow it so it will handle things happily.
  
  
• GPU: GTX 760 - if I were going for a AMD processor it'd be the R9-280 here but the 760 is the more solid GPU for the price here at around $250
  
  
• RAM: Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB - this is a single chip and a lot of folks would say go with 2x4gb but with the rest of the system it'll make little difference and this single chip leaves upgrade space. For all current (and new) games coming out, you still won't get close to maxing out 8GB RAM. Plus at the $70 price on Amazon, you can't complain ;)
  
  
• Install Drive: SanDisk Extreme II 120GB SSD. Pop the OS onto this for some lightning fast boot times. You can pop the odd game and such onto a drive of this size too. Prices of it vary massively right now as only some places have offers on it, look around as you should get it for $80
  
  
• Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB HDD - this will be the main storage for the rig and for $50 there's nothing better.
  
  
• PSU: Seasonic M12II 620. I'm not 100% on if this is the first build or not, so I've gone with a slightly more expensive modular power unit so you don't have to fiddle around tidying cables that you won't use, you can just use those you do need with this. $90
  
  
• Motherboard: MSI Z97-G45 Gaming - to be honest, there's a lot of boards around the $140-150 mark to make a nice system but this has a few more nice little features on it to help the gamers ;) normally $145
  
  
• Case: Corsair 400R - personal favourite of mine. It's really spacious so will make the building easy for you. Can be anywhere from $90-100 depending on where you buy.
  
  TOTAL PRICE: $1072.25
  
  The only change I'd make to this is the PSU if you're comfortable with cable management, as then I'd go for the SeaSonic S12II 620 instead (basically the same unit but not modular) for $65. Would bring total down to $1047.25

Yes, using the unofficial macOS 10.14 Mojave upgrader will affect performance, and not in a good way. The internal GPU of the iMac doesn't support Metal, but Mojave relies on Metal for the graphical acceleration of the user interface. Therefore, the UI will be slow as hell in Mojave, like this:

  Unusable, if you ask me. Again, this has nothing to do with CPU, SSD, or RAM. The GPU isn't Metal-compatible, and the Mojave patcher doesn't suddenly change that.

  If you want to speed up the iMac, you should upgrade its RAM and exchange the internal HDD for an SSD.
  
  As for the RAM:
  
  The iMac 2011 supports up to 32 GB RAM (4 x 8 GB RAM modules). Apple claims that it only supports 16 GB RAM, but this is due to the fact that 8 GB RAM modules weren't common back in the day, so they tested with 4 GB RAM modules. 4 x 4 GB RAM = 16 GB RAM. It has been proven time and again that it actually supports up to 32 GB RAM. Apple just never bothered to go back and update their support information.
  
  The RAM you need should match the following specifications:

  As for the SSD:

  Last but not least, I don't think downgrading macOS is a good idea. Doing a RAM and / or SSD upgrade will deliver a greater speed boost than any macOS downgrade. How well macOS runs on the machine mainly depends on the hardware anyway. Furthermore, downgrading macOS will expose you to security issues that are no longer present in newer macOS releases. It also means reducing the compatibility with third party software, as most third party software requires newer versions of macOS.

120 gb is just fine, some people even go with just 60, but then the price per gig goes down.

Mobo is definitely overkill. I saw the same LTT video, and I don't know why some gamers spend so much money. The one linked below should be just as good for your needs, and it will overclock just fine.

Notes:

GPU - I was also considering the 5700XT which gets pretty cheap at Micro Center. I feel like the 2070 Super is worth the upgrade, but I'd like some input here.

Mobo - I was also looking at the Asrock B450 which is $65 cheaper at Micro Center when combined with the CPU. I was reading that you need a 2nd Gen Ryzen to flash the BIOS though? Also that it's not as good for overclocking.

General advice - I've built a PC in the past but just kind of plugging everything in and hoping it worked. Any guides that you could give me would be appreciated. Voltages to check, how to overclock the CPU, overclocking the RAM, any fine tuning for the GPU, testing to make sure the IPS monitor doesn't have backlight bleeding, I've never used a modular power supply before, etc.

SSD: Personally I'd go Corsair MP510 over the Intel SSD.

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 3200 C16 instead of the G.Skill memory. Same price but it will overclock better. Seriously, if you make one change, make this one.

HDD: 1 TB hard drive is a waste of money.

PSU: Can you wait for like a month? I've picked up Gold and Platinum PSUs for $60 after rebate during the holiday sales. The price of that PSU does not look good to me. I'd probably look at what the difference in cost is for a Gold or Platinum PSU from Seasonic or EVGA.

Monitor: I'd recommend going with AOC C24G1 over that Dell monitor. C24G1 is also 144 Hz freesync, but it has a VA panel which has much better contrast. Unlike most VA panel the response time is still pretty good on it, and the additional contrast really does a lot for image quality. I'll never own an IPS or TN monitor again. Here's a review of the C24G1.

If you can afford another $150 then the LG32GK650F is also a substantial step up in terms of size and resolution. Although response time isn't quite as good, it's still pretty good.

Mouse/Keyboard: The mouse/keyboard come down a lot to personal preference. If you have a Best Buy/Fry's/Microcenter near you, you may want to have your friend go down and try out some mice and keyboards for himself. Maybe he wants to go wireless, as well.

Cable: The monitor should come with a cable. I wouldn't waste money on a cable unless the included cable isn't good enough.

GPU: If you're trying to make an economical build you should just get a 5700 non-XT and then do a soft power table mod to unlock it to 5700 XT. There is basically no risk at all, and the end result will be almost as fast for $50 less.

RAM is not great for that price imho.

Replace WD Black with a WD Blue or seagate baraccuda 7200/64. You'll save $20 and a lot of noise. WD Blacks are not worth it, especially since you'll be using an SSD for the O/S.

I don't know your incentives to buy all the stuff from amazon, but $70 more...well, they better be good. Honestly, if you MUST get all the stuff from amazon I would get a different case that is priced reasonably.

For instance you can get the Corsair 750D from amazon, which is full tower and honestly a better case, and save $20.

You are overpaying for that mobo considering its only a H series. Some Z series are at that price. Either look at $70 H series chipset mobos or get a Z series.

Since you are getting non OC, getting H or B class chipsets would be recommended at $60-$80 for a mobo with my recommending more around the $80 range since you want more theoretical reliability.

Why the 850 Pro? You could just get a 850 Evo or even a Crucial MX 100(not as fast but when its on sale, its a lot cheaper).

If you like the 410, go with it, but I have heard of some issues with it. Corsair or Fractal may do you better for better price v performance cases but if you like it, then go with it.

The stock cooler is definately fine, but you could down the line or even now hook up an aftermarket if you wish. I have run a stock cooler on my Haswell before in a case with little ventilation (mini ITX) and it never got 'hot'. But you could look into an EVO 212 ($20-$30) or a BEQUIET to 'theoretically' increase or preserve the lifespan of your chip over time. Also aesthetic reasons as you have a nice case, card, and other accessories.

Your best bet (and greatest speed increase for your money) is to upgrade your HDD to a SSD. The Samsung EVO series (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E250B-AM/dp/B00OAJ412U - select a storage capacity based on your needs) is a pretty good bet, though most SSDs will speed up your system considerably.

You'd insert the SSD into the enclosure, plug the enclosure into your MacBook Pro and then use a program called SuperDuper to duplicate the files on your current HDD and copy them onto your new SSD. That way, when you install the SSD, you can plug in and go.

Depending on your budget, you can also upgrade your RAM, though it may not be worth it depending on your usage. If you use Virtual Machines a lot, or other memory-intensive applications, this may be a worthwhile upgrade.

Looking much better. If you can possibly get a better processor like an i5 that would be good. Im always fine with people getting budget parts but processors can last 5 years easy if you get a good one. But its up to you. I would get an ssd also. Even if its just big enough for a boot drive. Almost all modern games only use 8gb of RAM which is why I only gave you 8. However, it's extremely easy (and cheap) to upgrade, so you can definitely add more down the line if you want. If you do, make sure you add the same kind as before. If you want 16gb now to future-proof, get this:

As for keyboards, the Corsair k70 is great and very well reviewed, but it's fairly expensive (around $120 I think). I don't know much about mechanical keyboards though, so you might want to try r/keyboards for extra help. If you're set on a mechanical keyboard, make sure you know which switch type you want (look it up if you're not sure what you're looking for- Cherry MX blue is the most popular, and the best IMO). Not the newest components but should keep you going for a good few years. The ryzen 2600 is a good cpu and the samsung SSD is a great and fast SSD with a long life to it. im pretty sure you wont expirence lag with the above components.....but you will need to build your self, and windows 10 is free but if you want to go pro you can get a key of the net for £15

Any money saved for the love of god get a better quality PSU. Even if it is something lower end like a Corsair VS or Cooler Master MWE, neither are great supplies but better than any Game Max one I'd bet. Remember the PSU is the corner stone of your build, never ever try and save money on it.

I believe that the base level Mini ($599) comes with the 2gb and the mid-level ($799) comes with 4gb. I bought the mid level, but I just bought and installed 8gb of ram courtesy of Amazon for a super cheap $55 ($45 once I get my $10 mail in rebate).

The install process is super easy. Just pop the bottom cover off, no screws required, and swap the memory out. All-in-all it took me like 2 minutes.

All of that having been said, 4gb of ram is fine for the average user. I'm a bit of a power user (large image manipulation via Photoshop, DVD encoding, video games) and I probably didn't need 8gb. I just couldn't pass up the $45 price tag.

Oh and one more thing. If you plan on using Parallels or VMWare to run a virtual Windows environment (really handy for using Windows apps without having to reboot into a bootcamp partition) then I would recommend the 8gb upgrade. Both OSX and the Windows virtual machine will benefit from having that much memory available.

This is amazing - I cannot thank you enough and I really like the i5 from the review, the multi-threading of i7 will not matter at all with the games I play.

My only question is on Windows 7. Unfortunately I do have a legit version, but I believe it is lost now (code wise as it was on a student account that is now dead). You notes £30.00 for it, but I cannot see it for such a price anywhere. Are you aware of where I can get it for such a good price? [EDIT - ignore me I have found it. Thanks again.]

With regards to Ram, if I were to get a highler clock speed, would you have any recommendation. If you believe the version you recommended is ample then not a problem. I did see this for a little bit more?

It will probably work but i have seen some compatibility issues.

Here's what I would do: MSI Krait edition motherboard + Corsair Dominator Platinum Series RAM sticks. It is a better overclocking mobo and you get the style points for a black/white build. Also, the RAM is faster so you're a little bit more futureproofed. The Cryorig H7 is replacing the 212 in terms of the go-to air cooler, otherwise the Corsair water cooling kit is a great option as well (also fits color scheme). I'm personally recommending 240GB since I've filled up my 120GB with games and programs twice now before I had to do some cleaning. I also like this case better, plus you can remove drive bays to make room for larger GPUs, if you are still undecided about which one you want. I wouldn't worry about M.2, I got that SSD and never ended up using it. If you do end up building this, please do take pics :)

I thought both of those SSDs were NVMe. This is so complicated! haha but the case you changed to is actually the one I was looking at after I posted this, so I'm totally down with that one. The rest looks really good too, actually. What do you think about this memory instead of the one you suggested? I like the way it looks, but if the one you suggested works better, I'm good with it. I'm going for a white, very little black, and pink color scheme but ultimately I want a working computer rather than a pretty brick.

If you don't care to OC your memory (which you should, it makes a pretty big difference and is incredibly safe) as long as you get a 3200-3600 mhz kit with decent timings you'll be alright.

If you do want to tweak your memory in the future, there are plenty of sick deals on 16GB of memory right now.

This Crucial Ballistix kit contains Micron Rev E chips inside of it, and these overclock VERY easily to 3600-3800 cl18 depending on what your cpu can handle. Absolutely amazing sticks for the price, and I'd recommend you pick them up even if you don't tune your memory right now.

For a little extra you can pick up an even faster kit, this patriot viper steel 4133 kit. It contains Samsung b die chips, the most sought after for overclocking and should do much tighter timings than the Ballistix, and for $94 the value is great.

If/when you tune your memory expect anywhere from 15-20% boosts in 1% lows/average fps which improves the smoothness of your game a ton. Here's a great guide on how to do it when you're inclined.

I am no Pc master but DDR3 Ram can't go into a DDR4 Motherboard. I suggest getting Corsair Dominator DDR4 16 GB Ram. They are the ram i use and it works fine. I recomend the 16Gb if you are going to game on it/record. My personal oppinion i would go for a EVGA Z170 FTW Mobo. Also i would get the Nzxt Kraken x62 watercooling for the cpu. They are easy to install you can watch videos on how to instal it. And you might want some More fans if you are going to game. try for something like this it doesnt have to be this as it is extremely overkill but i believe it is on sale. modular/semi modular would benefit you as the case doesnt seem to have much space to store cables so if you have less cables to hide its good.

this will leave you 155. for a gpu, try this which will leave you with 50 bucks to pick up ram. get this if you can, call up PC Planet and ask for exact specs of the i3 and the copy of windows. ask if the windows is 64bit.

To put it very basically, your system would benefit from your ram having as high a frequency (the mhz number, 2400 and 2666 in your example) and as low a cas latency (16 and 19 in your example) as possible. To roughly quote Buildzoid, the frequency is how fast your ram is and the cas latency is how responsive it is; imagine someone who has the job of running to a warehouse, finding a specific item, and running back. Somebody who runs fast but sucks at finding things would have a high frequency but also a high cas latency. If they run really slow but are also very good at finding things, they'd have a low frequency but also a low cas latency. Ideally you'd want someone who can run pretty fast and is pretty good at finding things, even if they're not the very best at either of those things.

Because you're using an Intel cpu it doesn't matter quite as much overall (compared to Ryzen chips) but you can still see performance gains from better ram. I'd recommend aiming for 3200mhz cl16 (like this) if you can afford it as it's essentially become standard. You might be able to find 16gb as low as ~$50 if you come across a sale- I haven't seen any kits lower than $50 though.

Going from 2400 to 3000+ has shown to give a nice increase in performance, so always good to get the best you can for a few bucks more maybe.

Should definitely check out some YouTube videos though to see where higher frequency ram will excel at!

Adding the ram will definitely improve performance. 4gb isn't enough to run the newer OS well. You'd have to get all new 2x4gb sodimm 1333 Mhz ram since there are only two slots.
Depending on how much money you want to put into it, an SSD will also improve performance greatly. You'll have apps open almost instantly.
You won't see a change in performance with a new battery, but you won't have to keep it plugged in constantly.

After these improvements you'd spend around 200 bucks. For that laptop its definitely worth it, you won't get better performance for that price. Don't expect to be doing major gaming, but you can do quite a bit on it.
You could always sell it. You'd be hard pressed to find something with similar performance with the few hundred bucks you'd make but you could put that towards something better.

I wouldn't skimp on the PSU or case because they'll last you if there good, though 650W is a little high for a single GPU setup and that mobo doesn't support SLI (have to pay a premium for SLI mobo) and limits memory speed to 1600. For mobo unless you want all the features of a H97, a cheaper model will be would fine. Goodluck with the build.

Compared to the H440, the S340 is a bit louder, but it's got better airflow and a window.

For Ram, you will want 2666 MHz 260-Pin SODIMMS. I recommend buying a matching set (so they are matched, and are paired so they run optimally for dual channel use.) I would recommend a matched set of 32gb (2x16gb) Hyper X impact (made by Kingston.)

The price between 3200MHz and 3600MHz right now is about $5. There's no reason not to go with a 3600MHz 16GB kit: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws V 3600MHz CL16

3200MHz is a good middle ground for price back when that video was made, but 3600MHz RAM is very cheap right now, and you will get a good boost in performance.

I came from a Xeon X5675 6c/12t @ 4.8GHz, and at those clocks it was roughly 40% faster than an i7 6700 in multithreaded benchmarks, and my 3600X is about 30% faster than my X5675 was. You will actually see a HUGE real world difference moving to Zen2 with Premiere and productivity apps.

Crossfire is essentially dead. The 5700 XT doesn't support crossfire. It does support multi-GPU, but the application has to be coded to support it. You're better off saving your money and getting a B450 board versus an X470/X570. The SLI/Crossfire tax isn't worth it, and Zen2 has no overclocking headroom, so most good B450's have plenty of VRM to see Zen2 hit it's max boost. As someone who bought an X470 board, I can say it was an unnecessary move.

I'm looking to upgrade my RAM. Does the Patriot Memory 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz run fine with an intel CPU? With this set up I calculated a $257 profit at a total of 5500 H/s, 700w consumption and $0.11/kwh and a 1% pool fee.

This seems a little less than I thought and read regarding the profit, am I missing something?

Is the potential hash rate bigger than 5500 h/s or the consumption lower? (I put this value based on what I read on other forums from people with the same video card)

Any advice is welcomed, please let me know your thoughts.

Hard drive and RAM are likely the issue, though the GPU could be fried.

First I would take it into Apple and make sure there isn't an issue with a major component. As long as nothing (except maybe the battery) is wrong with it, do the following.

-Buy an SSD. EVO 850 from Samsung, $100 for 250GB. Of course you can shop around, but it's one of the best out there. Don't spend extra on the Pro.

-Upgrade RAM. Looking at 8GB of DDR3 1333 MHz. $50

And of course if the battery needs replacing, get it done. $150 max.

So for $300 you've given your computer new life. Save the extra to buy a new machine in 2 years.

If the GPU is gone, you would have to take it to a 3rd party to get the motherboard replaced. This will likely blow your budget, DO NOT REPLACE THE MOTHERBOARD.

My suggestion? Look at Swappa for a 2012-2014 MBP 15". It will be a bit more than your budget but at least you'll get more out of it than you would replacing the motherboard, as you would still need to do other upgrades.

Yeah it's a pricing bug I guess. This would be the kit to go for if you wanted to keep it super low in price: 8GB G.Skill Ares 1333Mhz. It's £40, and the loss in performance would honestly be in the region of 1% or less, so you really wouldn't notice a difference.

If you really wanted 1600 Mhz for whatever reason, G.Skill Ripjaws are about £15 more, but honestly it's not worth it from a price/performance standpoint. Much better off getting a non-reference GTX 670 with that money I'm sure.

It's because of the floods in Thailand that they're so high, a lot of Hard drives got drowned in a factory or something. Brings tears to my eyes. ;(

What I think I'm going to do tonight is buy everything that I'm set and sure on (and all the parts that are currently on sale - don't want to lose a good deal), and buy the remaining things; GPU, HDD and case - at a later date (probably within the next week).

RAM is way overpriced, I'd recommend Crucial Ballistix sport on Amazon, same kind of kit, 2x8gb 1600 mt/s. That'll save you $50.

That mobo seems a bit overpriced to me, there are some great high end boards that don't hit the $200 mark. This ASrock z87 Extreme4 on NewEgg has been ranted and raved about. But if you're looking for that overclocking utility, maybe stick with the Asus. I can't speak for their overclocking tools, but I can vouch for the quality of MSI's.

You could prolly get Windows 8 OEM a bit cheaper from somewhere else too, but it'll only save you $10 more.

If you can't use DDR4 win your MOBO, I would recommend two options-

1. Get a 16 GB DDR3 RAM pack to increase physical memory.

Total is 137.07 and will open a ton of options in gaming. Don't expect new games to push high/medium settings but low shouldn't be a problem at all. Aim for 900p if you decide on a monitor, but I don't think you'll get any performance if you go higher. Craigslist can be dirt cheap for this. As far as OS goes then you could research how to get windows 10 easily for free as Microsoft is still handing it out till june.
This PC will run laps around that laptop you have but if it's a laptop you need then I don't know your options other than look for something older and used.

This computer will run any game out from <2012 at medium/ low @900p. It will for sure run newer games but you are going to have to run at mostly all low settings. Emulators shouldn't be a problem at all with this rig either except for maybe Dolphin and PCSX2 but you could possibly even jimmy those with smooth frame rates.

The non-window black R4 is going for $80 on newegg right now with the ongoing promo, which is a fantastic price. But if you're insistent on paying the premium for a window, order from newegg to save a few bucks.

I have not assembled this, and it will be my first build so take my build with a grain of salt, but alot of these parts are highly recommended by either tech reviewers or/and consumer reviewers. I got all parts on sale on amazon except my ram on newegg. I expected these part to fall to these prices again. I went with the 3600x because I heard the stock cooler is pretty good and it was only 20 or so more.

Hey, that drive is pretty good but this one's my recommendation if you want something faster with 2 Tb capacity, I personally use a 1tb version of this and I can tell you it's fast 3500mb reads and about 3300 writes.

As for ram you only have one option, right now only Samsung is making 32gb sodimms so if you want 64 gb that's what you have to go for, at least for the time being until another company gets around to making them. That said Samsung ram isn't the fastest but it's your only option if you want to go 32gb on each slot. There's stuff like hyper x impact which has lower latency at 15. Samsung's latency is 19, lower is better but it's not day and night difference either. I for one got the base config with 16gb and after I scanned it I found out they put Samsung ram on mine so I just bought a matching stick of 16gb to make it 32gb

The first thing I noticed is the version of Windows you picked. By that I mean your choice of Professional Edition. The only thing that you get from Professional that would be useful would be XP mode and Windows back-up. There's no real need to pick Pro over Home Premium for a gaming computer. Since Win8 doesn't have an Ultimate version yet, I'd stick with Home Premium.
Also, have you tried some price checking with Amazon? I got an i5 3550P a little while ago for $120 from their Warehouse Deals thing. The only thing about it was that the original Intel packaging for the processor had been cut while opening the shipment at the warehouse, so they threw a big discount on it. Besides, I've found things on Amazon to be the same price or cheaper than Newegg (not always though).
As an example for Amazon, your RAM choice. I see you have 8GB for $94. I suggest you look at this. It's a single stick of 8GB Kingston HyperX Blue RAM for only $65. That's $30 back to you right there.
Other than the RAM, I'd suggest price checks for lower prices. If you still can't reach your budget, I'd suggest either paying the extra or stepping down your i7. I agree with your friend not wanting anything other than GTX, I use nothing less as-well, but if things get desperate the Radeon 7770 is pretty good.

tribes DOES perform better with NVIDIA, id recommend going for a 760 for the best value for your money.

Regarding cpu, an i5 will do the job fine. Hell, there are still people who use the 2500k and get very, very good performance with it.

For ram, 8gb @1600mhz will do fine. Corsair Vengeance has been around for a while but does the job nicely, and is solid entry level ram. (make sure you get the low profile / lp version to prevent any clearance issues with your cpu cooler)

Might wanna get some better RAM, Ryzen gaming perf has nice gains with the right memory, 3200c14-3600c16 sweet spot. The cheap b-die will get you there (tweaking will be required), or get the "fire and forget XMP" 3600c17 kits.

It would've been much cheaper if you consider the "used" parts and going with the ex-generation parts (Mobo+Cpu). Heck, X1 and PS4's parts are kinda old, ya know.

Yeah, it's a combination of things. First, RAM is insane right now. Second, this is the best looking RGB LED RAM on the market (my personal opinion). I personally am an LED whore, and genuinely considered getting this before I went with the Corsair Vengeance for $50 cheaper. I'm one of those people where having a great rig will make me happy, but having it look sexy would make me even happier. So I spent the extra cash on stupid stuff like RGB RAM and the HUE+.

What test results do you want?

The stock 16GB of RAM is 2666MHz, so it's best to go for something that matches it.

The most popular 216GB kit is: Kingston Technology HyperX Impact 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL15 260-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory, Kit of 2 (HX426S15IB2K2/32), because it has a CAS latency of 14, better than stock.

I went with this kit: G.SKILL 32GB (2 x 16G) Ripjaws Series DDR4 2666MHz SODIMM F4-2666C18D-32GRS because I couldn't get the Kingston kit in Australia and it has a CAS latency of 16 making it faster than stock and it works great.

There's also even cheaper: CORSAIR Vengeance Performance 32GB (2x16GB) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Laptop Memory Model CMSX32GX4M2A2666C18 but it has a CAS latency of 18.

Right now the Kingston is cheaper than my GSKILL kit (it was the inverse back when I bought mine) so I'd definitely go with that.

As for 232GB (64GB) kits, Samsung has finally released their new kit they teased last year: 2xM471A4G43MB1-CTD, but no one like corsair, kingston or crucial has one available yet, save for mushkin

And ignore the marketing that says 2019 only supports 64GB, it has the same CPU as the 2018 and therefore both support 64GB.

It does sound like RAM is the more likely cause though either upgrade would benefit.

You can look at what's causing the bottleneck yourself by running Activity Monitor or a RAM monitoring app and seeing if the RAM is peaking at the same time as you notice the freezing. I used this on my old 13" MBP, realised the RAM wasn't the issue, upgraded the SSD instead and got a good performance boost. However, in your case as I mentioned it does seem the RAM is more likely the cause.

If you don't mind opening your computer at home then you could save a lot of money off their upgrade pricing. You can do either upgrade at home by following iFixit guides with parts bought off Amazon. Here is the 16GB RAM and the SSD (these were just the first products I found after a quick search, if you find the exact part number you can find them even more cheaply but check that they're good quality and won't just fail).

If you're looking for the best value and specs in your price range, I would recommend looking into the HP 15 for $595. It is incredibly powerful with a skylake i7 processor, 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd. It also has a full 1080p IPS display, it's pretty light and portable (4.8 pounds) and a pretty good battery (up to 7 hours of light use).

It only has 8 GB of ram, but the ram is upgradable and you can buy another 8GB stick for $32.

Thanks for the quick response. Looking at the Corsair, I noticed this Zalman Z9 which has bigger dimensions than the Corsair even, and is cheaper. So I might go with that.

Funnily enough, if I go with single 8Gb HyperX Fury chips, the 1600MHz is pretty much the same price as the 1866MHz one.

If you suggest that 8Gb is enough, even for big open world games like Grav, Minecraft and Rust, then I shall trust you and save about £55 right there. Which is more than the tower costs :D

As far as mobo goes, it is fairly cheap because I am getting it off of ebay, but otherwise it looked like a sound investment. I will have a look at other options though, especially after implementing these changes and how much I can push my budget.

Just a couple of thoughts

• It'd be better off with the i5-4460 for about $50 more and still keep under the $800 mark.
  
  
• I'd try to push for the EVGA GS (or G2) 650W 80+ Gold if only because, in my experience, EVGA has a better build quality vs Corsair as far as PSUs go =3=
  
  
• As for RAM I'd rather go with this kit, this one, or this one if only because CAS9 over CAS10 (and for roughly the same price). Even then, this can be dropped to 8 GB to save cash if needed (more-so considering this is entry level)
  
  
• the mobo comes with a SATA cable or two so I don't see why we're buying another one on this list

Socket is important for the CPU an 4th Gen i7 for example uses LGA1150 Sockets, i7 7th Gen uses LGA 1151 Sockets, it's basically the part that holds the CPU in place and connects it with the mobo and defines what kind of CPU you can use. So most likely you'd have to also upgrade your mobo and RAM if you upgrade your CPU.

You could get an Asus Z170-P (100$), an i5-7600K (235$) and 8GB Balistix DDR4 2400mhz (60$) totaling to 395$ excluding shipping. As GPU you could get any GTX 1070 (~400$). I can't recommend you any AMD GPUs as I'm not up to date on them. Of course you could get a GTX 1060 and save ~200$ and invest them in an i7 or just save the 200$ if you don't need an 1070s performance. That all depends on your needs and you might want to ask again tomorrow as there might be some better options or maybe cheaper options that I'm not aware of.

Free RAM is used as file cache. Zero swap is being used because the box isn't out of RAM; the file cache is shrunk as memory pressure increases until there is none left, at which point it will begin to swap.

So, large file cache + zero swap usage + low memory pressure graph = everything is hunky-dory.

Yes, you need more RAM, especially for Photoshop. Max out that machine (16 GB) and it will sing.

Assuming you have the 15" Late 2011 MBP: buy this. Installation instructions here. Only 8 GB is officially supported but 16 GB works perfectly (I have the 15" Early 2011 MBP and it works flawlessly with 16 GB).

Do I need to download any drivers before removing the HDD and attempting to do a fresh install on my SSD? Will my computer boot with those RAM sticks being brand new? (There's only two RAM slots on my MOBO)

I have my important files backed up on DropBox, along with a Ninite for the programs I'd like to start with.

I plan on fresh installing Windows 10 on the SSD, and then reformatting my HDD so it's clear, but do I need to do anything else?

Do I really need to temporarily disconnect the hard drive when performing my fresh install?

Do I need to migrate my Lenovo (D:) Drive files (it's filled with what looks like my hardware drivers, was on the computer when I bought it) myself before reformatting my HDD, or will that automatically install on the SSD? I think it's just a partition. Would I just right click-> format the Windows (C:) area and leaving the rest alone?

Lastly, I made a USB windows 10 install with media creation tool, will it automatically boot from this or do I need to change something on boot up?

Honestly, for the money, going with a Hynix CJR/DJR kit is better for 99% of people as the performance will be closer to an average bin of B-Die than to MFR while costing closer to what MFR does; that is, with average B-Die you hit diminishing returns while paying more comparatively. Allow me to explain: a 16GB kit of G.Skill Ripjaws 3600 CL16 Hynix DJR costs $75, or $15 more, than garbo MFR at 3200 CL16. Significantly faster stock and can have sub-timings tweaked to be significantly better than MFR too, widening the gap even more without having run into diminishing returns yet. It will also be better than going with Micron Rev. E since that's only a couple bucks less but CJR/DJR can be tuned to the same frequency but with average instead of loose sub-timings.

This is $25 more for what will be a much smaller improvement because 1. memory speed and latency does not scale linearly, especially once you get into higher speeds, and 2. this isn't much faster to begin with anyway. Regardless of whether you're running XMP or not overall system performance will only be slightly better (2-3%) on these, stock because of the tradeoff between frequency (higher on the Ripjaws DJR) and timings (tighter on the T-Force B-Die, enough to overcome the frequency deficit) and tuned because while they both will be able to run 3600 you'll be looking at average latency of CL16 + sub-timings (480 tRFC, for example) for DJR vs low latency of CL14 + sub-timings (300 tRFC, for example) for B-Die.

TL;DR: Getting the Ripjaws 3600 CL16 kit with Hynix DJR for $75 instead of coughing up $100 for these will make more sense for 99% of use cases.

Some RAM seems more popular than others. For instance, this standard G.Skill set seems to get picked more often than this equivalent set of popular Corsair Vengeance.

Now, my question is: why? Aren't they basically like HDMI cables at this point (functionally identical)? The same CAS latency, speed and voltage; surely the only thing that changes is the colour and maybe the efficacy of the heatsink design?

Crucial Ballistix 3200 cl16 or 3000 cl15. Not the 3000 cl16. Careful what color you chose, as price can jump radically. seems to adjust itself every day based on stock available, or previous sales or something.

If you're overclocking RAM these are the best sticks for the money you can possibly buy. On Intel they get to 3733 cl16 easy, and even 4133mhz with lose enough timings, and some know-how. AMD it's a little more hit and miss, but you don't want to go past 3600 on Ryzen 3000 anyways, unless you know what you're doing pretty well.

What bios are you using?

If you're doing some overclocking, change the motherboard. The Extreme4 is not very good at it. I would opt for something like a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H or a Biostar TZ77XE3.

As for ram, the ram you picked has a large heatspreader and might prevent you from installing the cooler with the fan in push configuration. Something like Crucial's Ballistic Sport is cheaper, lower profile (won't interfere with heatsink), and has slightly tighter timings than the Corsair RAM you picked.

Lastly, power supply. Do you actually need 750W? Do you plan on running SLI in the future? If you aren't, I would downgrade the power supply to a 500-600W unit. Otherwise, a cheaper alternative to a 750W power supply is the Rosewill Hive 750. Hardware Secrets reviewed a 650W version and gave it a great rating.

The CPU is good (don't go for the vPro option), and so is the amount of RAM. Don't be surprised when you find out that you're using up a lot more RAM than before though, since Windows gives a percentage of your RAM to Superfetch to speed up application launches. If you're fine with replacing RAM on your own, however, I would go with this set. As for the SSD, since it has 2 slots you can keep the one that comes preconfigured and get an aftermarket one (the 970 Evo Plus from Samsung is better overall).

On another note, since it doesn't look like you'll be gaming, it might be worthwhile to check out the P1 Gen 2, which is the workstation equivalent of the X1E Gen 2. They are pretty much the same, with the only major differences being the graphics card (Quadro instead of GeForce) and the (albeit crazy expensive) factory calibrated 4K panel.

I took out the 2gb sticks and kept in the 8gb and my computer wouldn't boot up. Took those out and put in the 2gb and now my computer works fine.

I assume it's either a compatibility issue or hardware issue with the sticks of ram itself. Do you see anything that would cause compatibility issues based on what I posted?

Dual channel memory is obviously nice to have but the performance advantage is mostly only noticeable in synthetic benchmarks. So I wouldn't base my decision on that alone. It mostly depends on how many VM's you are running at once and how much memory you need to assign to each one of them. I'm a software developer too and I upgraded my X1E to 2 x 16GB. With that I can comfortably run 3 or 4 (mostly linux) VMs at once and the host (Windows 10 Pro) still has ~16GB to work with. More VMs than that and I'd recommend 64GB.

You should look up your laptop/motherboard specs and see what the max amount of memory that is supported and at what speed. If you have an empty slot for RAM, then I would just buy the exact same stick as the other. If your laptop has a high RAM capacity and you can get significantly higher speed, then you could go out and buy all new sticks that fit into the mobo and stay within the laptop specs.

This looks like the RAM you have in your system. Your specs show you can have a max of 32 GB and the specs on your CPU show that 2133 MHz is the max supported speed. So either buy a new stick or get this

My problem is I found this module at amazon ($200 USD), but it says it runs at 2666 MHz, and I found my memory modules are running at 2133 MHz, so not sure it's the right one.

if you are asking about gaming (without knowing what you have already) you should probably only worry about ram after your GPU and CPU are great.

I decided to go for the T490,
right now both the T480 and T490 are the same price for te base config with core i7 and WQHD. But the T490 has a slightly faster turbo boost and has a brighter display.

buy yourself, minimum, 8 more gigs of ram. FO4VR's min specs are 16gigs, and you'll really feel the bottleneck if you don't have it.

It shouldn't be that expensive amazon has 8 gig cards as low as 70 bucks, but this 2 pair for $120 seems great. that'd put you at 24 gig of ram, plenty to work with.

Unless you are doing anything that really requires you to have 16GB, I'd replace it with 8GB, purely because RAM is so expensive right now.

Looking on Amazon in my reigon (UK), something like this is what I'd get. Look at retailers or Amazon in your area and see what you can get for a good price. I'd be looking to get a single stick of 8GB from a reputable brand and I wouldnt bother paying extra to have speeds above 1333Mhz. If you can get a good deal on a stick thats 1600/1866/etc then go for it, but I wouldn't really bother paying extra for it as it won't make much (any) difference to real world performance

How important is RAM in my computer? All I'm going to do is play games at decent enough settings to get 60 FPS and edit videos. It might be better to have 2 sticks of 4GB RAM, then it's dual channel (I think that's right). This Corsair LP Vengeance is good, only a few quid more but should improve performance.

Also yeah lower the PSU wattage, I have a 600w Corsair PSU in my build and I should have less power draw since I only have a GTX 760 GPU.

1. 144Hz yes. But my eyes stop being able to discern a difference once the frame rate hits about 100Hz or better so YMMV. 90Hz from my Vive Pros is no problem to my eyes for fluidity.
   
2. Jesus, that is cheap. I would suggest this, though. I have personally clocked two different kits individually or in a 4x8 config to 4000 @ 18-18-18-18-36-54 on two different Zen 2 systems of mine. It is micron Rev E (commonly referred to as e-die) and perhaps the best deal in cheap DRAM speed for results that can be attained if you're willing to tune it out. runs just fine at XMP, too.
   
3. Anything of reputable manufacture. I did not see an appreciable difference in feel or speed between raided M.2 NVME Samsung Evo 970 drives or my 4tb 850 EVO or 4TB 860 EVO sata drives
   
4. Windows takes care of most of this and otherwise refer to your motherboard manufacturer's support page and the OEM page for anything "exotic" (GPU manufacturer, AIO control software, something that doesn't "just work" out of the box)
   
5. My reference folder for drivers spans 20 years. It is not a bad idea but I almost never use the files contained within

I got the configuration 50% off through JPChase perks, I couldn't pass it up, so I just got the RAM. However, it is pretty cheap. My configuration came with the RAM below, and they inserted it under the keyboard. So the remaining two slots are easily accessible under the back cover, although I don't think I need more than 64.

I too agree that this looks good. If you're looking to over clock the CPU though you should look into getting an aftermarket fan/heatsink combo. Also, you don't need 1866 RAM when 1600 should work fine, this'll save you 10 quid.
