So believe it or not, I play on a Highlander team in team fortress 2 and I use the third model you pictured. It takes getting used too, but once you get used too it, other models just don't feel the same. When I use it for gaming, sensitivity is key. Each game has a different sensitivity so trying to find one that works is key for trackballs. I only have the one I do because I didn't have the money for a better one but I still wanted a trackball.
The reason I like the third so much is because you can use 2 fingers to control the ball instead of just your thumb. It gives me some pretty insane accuracy on games that have sniper roles. Personal preference is pretty big when picking a trackball because of all the weird designs of them. A downside to the third one is that it does not have a scroll wheel, which is pretty frustrating at times. You can use the PG UP/DWN buttons but its just easier to have it on the mouse. I do believe that the buttons above LM and RM can be configured to use as a "hold and drag" kind of scroll wheel but its still troublesome. I recommend getting one like this?
Something like this might also help, but it is a smaller size.
Maybe this?
Trackballs are kind of expensive since very few people use them. Also I'm not really sure where to look for more trackball mice because I bought mine from a store. Good luck and ask if you have any questions! :)
They didn't make the wired version at the time. I can find it now on Amazon. Collectors are selling them for $399.99. That is not a typo.
Here's a generic one for $24.99. Also not a typo. ;)
Weird coworkers... sure, I'm almost 40, given time I could probably come up with a few other gems. I just thought of the lady with the Vietnamese snake wine because it was so odd and at the same place.
Yeah, a couple years later, I was doing a security job — jobs were kinda scarce right after 9/11, even though we weren't in a high risk area. Big companies were shipping jobs overseas, afraid of doing business in America, even in low risk areas. Anyway, I worked with this cheerful idiot of a man child (not that I wasn't one myself) and he once confided in me that he went to the interview stoned out of his gourd. To a security job. As if he didn't know security companies were staffed by retired cops. Or guys who couldn't make it as cops. So he gets there, high as a motherfucker, and they go to do a swab. He tells them his mouth is dry and asks if he could please get some water. They let him. He goes into the break room, and they have a water dispenser. He pours a cup of the hot, near boiling water, and he chugs it, burning the shit out of his throat. He gargles it. He takes the swab test and passes. If you think this is bullshit, I'm right there with you. He told me this story. I have no way of verifying it. He didn't last long, and when he left, he was fired, and the supervisors wouldn't say word one about it. I bet they caught him with weed. Security guards get dropped in on by their supervisors all the time. You're working a site, it's just you, plenty of opportunity to do drugs (or pot; I know, pot isn't a drug, the Good Lord wouldn't have made it if the Good Lord didn't expect us to smoke it, etc., etc.) but also, surprise visits are a thing.
Anyway, I'd relieve him after an 8 hour shift, and he would not leave. We'd get to talking, and I was on shift, I couldn't leave. And he'd stay for an hour. One hour turned into two, two into three. Longest he ever stayed was 5 hours, unpaid, into my shift. If anyone asked, I was training him. No one ever did, that was just the cover we agreed to. Supervisor dropped in, he forgot something and was just going (and would). Anyway, I started doing the same as we became friends, but I never stayed more than an hour, and most of the time he'd stay one or two hours, too. What was so special about this guy was, he would not shut up about a show called Babylon 5. Maybe you've heard of it. What he didn't tell me, that I think is so interesting, is that it was one of the first TV shows to air in 16:9. It would either have the letterboxing (bars on top and bottom) on the old 4:3 TVs, or they'd just cut the sides off (pan and scan). It was a challenge back then. TV stations didn't like it. Anyway, he actually told me, one day, the entire story of the show, leaving out very little details. And it sounded awesome. I meant to watch it, but didn't, for years. And then one day I got a great deal on the DVD box set at a yard sale. I thought, has to be fate. I think I paid like $20. Wife wasn't interested, so I watched it on my own. And I loved it. Wife agreed to watch it with me, so I watched it a second time with her.
Sorry, that was a long story, and that guy wasn't that weird, except for how he passed the drug test. Supposedly. But I mean, he didn't smoke around me, he wasn't trying to sell me pot, he wasn't trying to sound cool, so I kinda believe him, though what I choose to believe is, one, he probably cut the hot water with cold so it wasn't at 185 or whatever those hot taps put out, because I think that would have caused permanent damage. And two, either he didn't smoke that much that morning or, I don't know. Either the swab test was weak or faulty, or maybe it showed pot but no other substances and they passed him anyway. I don't think his story was 100% truthful, in any case.
I'm right-handed, like most, but have been wanting to train my left hand because it seems like a waste to have an entire appendage that is clumsy and underused. So I started using a Left-Handed Elecom thumb trackball. It has helped tremendously with my dexterity and the cognitive differences from switching between right hand and left. I wanna say that if my Right hand was at 100% functionality, my left is now around 80%, and I can write legibly with it. The thing to keep in mind is that you can't really use your Left hand in the same manner as your Right, because it's coming from a different angle, and generally are pushing rather than pulling. Would definitely recommend this, and thumb trackballs in general.

Ah Thank you for such good feedback.
My friend has this orbit scroll ring and raves about it. Which one precedes it though, I thought this was the one?
Wow I hadn't seen that MacMice one. Not my type though, too.... Mac-ish and seems like I will spend more than what it is worth.
I agree that weight wont be too much different for most. I am worried though, I heard some reviews claim that the nice Kensington balls weigh close to a pool table ball.
Damn honestly I have been down to the Deft Pro and Orbit w/Scroll. I was leaning towards the later. I have bought so many mice this year. I made the MX Ergo my expensive mouse buy because I thought it would be the end of my search. I think another reason I am leaning towards the Orbit is that i can use my left hand if my right gets sore.
Here is a case for Deft Pro I found on Amazon BTW
Edit: I meant to ask whether center balls are supposed to be better for the wrist. I find my pain is from clicking with my fingers rather than in my thumb (although it may all be connected).
Edit2: Sorry I realized that the case is the Deft HUGE.. You right I couldnt find one from the PRO. Seems like they should have one for the PRO before the HUGE.
Hahaha, I'm literally right now downloading plex to run on my Pi. It's an amazing bit of kit! I actually got mine in the first batch haha, even before my university! I took it in and my lecturers got mad jealous :P
I've recently become really interested in the idea of making Youtube videos, about general nerd related stuff. I want to eventually start making videos of gaming and other miscellaneous tech stuff, for example raspberry Pi! I'm incredibly fascinated by technology, so as you can imagine I spend a loooooot of time on the computer, so something that would help me out with the whole Youtube thing and life in general would be this mouse. I used one in university, and whilst I could never game on it, using it for standard tasks was far more comfortable. I figure when I start this Youtube thing I'll probably be at my computer even longer, so anything I can do to not get carpal tunnel I'm trying to do :P Thanks for the contest!! 3.14 :D
Ah, my bad. I owned the OG "Trackman Marble" (same name, but that thumb-ball form factor and in the beige era : https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-TrackMan-Marble-Wheel-Mac/dp/B00004L8IG )

I highly agree with your sentiment that the centered ball type/form factor was weird and unusable. But I do know someone who swears by it. Really weird.

I thought the new one was named the Trackman Marble too. But yes, I also owned that gray/red model (Trackman Wheel). And the wireless black/blue M570 that followed it.

Sadly, their microswitch quality has gone downhill in recent years. I would've moved on to the MX Ergo, but the prices are just insane and the microswitches are still prone to failure. I've since switched to gaming mice and am really happy with their crazy-precise sensors. I miss having a good thumb trackball though.

I also got an Elecom thumb trackball. It's like the Trackman Wheel, but with a few extra buttons, a better sensor and a fancier mousewheel. Feels alright to use. Would recommend if you're really sticking to that form factor. I don't know if I would've enjoyed it long-term but I eventually just gave mine to my sister's husband to use when his Trackman Wheel broke. He's been happily using it for a year.
Based on the name I'm going to guess that's where the tube goes through... well, down there. I felt disgusted enough having a tube in my arm, so I'm shuddering just thinking about that.

I've been thinking this through some more - would something like this be of use? I don't know a lot about carpal tunnel, but presumably you could still play turn based games using this - I suspect you could roll it, somewhat accurately, with your other hand or, if necessary, nudge it along with your elbow and use your elbow to click the big buttons. It would hardly be ideal, but it's better than sitting around being bored.
Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the best subreddit for this sort of question. If anyone could point me to the correct place that would be greatly appreciated.
My Dad recently had an aneurysm and has lost some of his ability to use his right arm and leg. It's getting better with therapy, but will most likely never be the same. With his diminished ability to get around, he's spending more time on the computer, but he's having a lot of trouble using a mouse. He currently uses a standard wired USB mouse.
He's able to use the mouse, but is having trouble with accurately pointing it where he wants. For example, I had to remote into this system to reorganize his Edge browser bookmarks because he accidentally messed up the order he had them in.
I was thinking about a trackball or maybe a track pad of some kind.
This thing looks interesting, but it also looks like a fucking Fisher Price toy: https://www.amazon.com/BIGtrack-2-0-Trackball-Buttons-12000006/dp/B0006ZM7VY

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing and could recommend a good candidate for someone in my Dad's condition?
Thanks
Looking for a full-size steel/aluminum rgb/white backlit usb wired mechanical keyboard w/a trackball for under $150
basically a combination of https://www.amazon.com/Desktop-Stainless-Keyboard-Mechanical-Trackball/dp/B07252JMJF
and https://www.amazon.com/Perixx-Periboard-522-Mechanical-Trackball-Keyboard/dp/B07F17YLLM/ for desktop use

Ideally it should be easy to clean with all keys removed, relatively silent, either permanently tilted or with pop-out supports on the back,
and have all mouse buttons + forward and back by the trackball (fingers getting stiff) with the ability to both scroll and move the cursor
It looks like the little collapsible shelf is standard on a lot of the carts. I'm considering sticking a trackball or touchpad on there with Velcro tape so everything is just stationary but I'm not sure if people would like that any better or how quickly they would get dirty...
We're going to put together a "hardware fare" with a few different configurations to let the nurses vote on what they like.
I recommend the M570 thumb trackball It's stationary and cheap and takes up less space than a mouse because it doesn't need to move. There's a decent case that you can buy to carry it. All in all, it's cheaper than a nicer mouse and functional.
I use it with a radial menu and a handful of AutoHotkey scripts for fast access and scrolling. Quite a nice accessory.
Yeah I seen that when I googled it. I don't think you can make a controller as precise as KB/M. There was a company I think was designing one but they are not shipping as far as I know. In my PC gaming days I used a Logitech Marble Trackman mouse for Quake III and was always accused of being a bot an actual character bot. So much so that game servers would actually send character bots out after me. Sigh. The good ole days. Anyway, the XBox/PS controllers joystick doesn't work well for aiming in FPS. Maybe a controller that has a mouse ball for one of the joysticks would be a nice. This is the mouse, not the new ones: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-TrackMan-Marble-Wheel-Mac/dp/B00004L8IG
I couldn't find anything other than PS2 keyboards but I did com across an advertisement image for the Microsoft IntelliMouse Trackball V1.0 and PS2 that had an external connector that connects the PS2 part to a connector that looks similar to VGA on the back of the first computer. Product found on Amazon.
Hope that helps even a little bit on trying to find a mouse and keyboard for those ancient pieces of history.
Understand why you like the model you posed since it's external use, but like many here said to MAME it's a mouse. So why not consider an actual trackball mouse like this: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B002Q42S4E/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_yJDSDbNDBWZ8J ?
What about all of the games that use mouse only? There are great trackballs that work well for people with disabilities.
A trackball, like so. You don't need to move it at all like a mouse, just put it wherever's comfortable. Takes some getting used to but in time you can be just as good with it as with a mouse.
Right. The Mini-PAC comes with a wire harness that looks like you'd just plug it in. And on the U-trak page they mention an "Optional USB2 interface" that looks like it's just the pin header you'd plug the trackball connection to and a USB connector. Do you know what kind of trackball you have? I've got an old one that looks like this. https://www.amazon.com/Track-Ball-Arcade-Trackball-Translucent/dp/B00J1M38PC/ Two 4-pin connections and I had to use a cable like this to connect it to a 60-in-1 board. https://www.amazon.com/Jamma-Replacement-Wiring-Harness-Trackball/dp/B00F1YQHMK/
And I've got a newer trackball that looks like this. https://www.amazon.com/Track-Arcade-Trackball-Jamma-Icade/dp/B00OX0MKD8/

Oh! Found this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7w_8zXYno8 In the comments someone asks about the USB interface they used. It's a U-HID Nano. http://www.u-hid.com/home/uhid_nano.php A nano would be enough for 1 trackball. For the arcade style trackballs, you'd need a harness that looked sort of like this https://www.amazon.com/Jamma-Trackball-Interface-Wiring-Harness/dp/B00F1YQHDE/ or maybe this https://www.amazon.com/Trackball-Interface-Wiring-Harness-Trackballs/dp/B01AIM5HZC/ but I'm not sure these would be wired correctly for what you want. The trackball/spinner harness for the Mini-PAC should be correct. For your setup, you may be able to swap the wires around on that last harness if it's not wired correctly.

I dont have this problem, just messed with some extra equipment. I suggest
To think about putting under your desk and trying with your feet. I tended to put the trackball upside down cause I liked to use my heel to press the mouse buttons. I did this so I could work and play two separate pc's. Also maybe a mouse with sidebuttons ex Razer.
As for games I'd suggest Diablo 3. Set the middle mouse wheel to right click as you spin it if you have mouse/software to do that. Hearthstone. Skyrim, Eve Online, Fallout. Sins of a Solar Empire. Starbound. Offworld Trading Company. Starcraft2 (Find friends your skill and get better). Civilization6 (I recently had to upgrade a graphics card to get this to play)
Torchlight2.
Oh and Just reminded, voice command with a microphone. Voice attack is an awesome program usually used when playing elite dangerous. Maybe get footpedals instead of throttle to go with your joystick though.
All sorts of gizmos and games to try. Head/eye tracking. Saw something recently where a guy plays minecraft with his eyebrows. Some extra stuff but the neat part was eyebrows.
>I have to agree with you about the Mighty Mouse. I use one because no one will sell me a Bluetooth trackball.
This makes no sense. Even though you'd prefer a trackball, why not get a better mouse if you don't like the current one?
Also Kensington used to make one. My friend has one and swears by it. Check for them on Ebay.
I always thought wireless trackballs were ridiculous - it's not going to move, so why would you care if it has a wire? Then I saw how my friend used it - he put his wireless keyboard and trackball in his lap, then leaned way back in his chair.
This may or may not help a bit on your wrist, but it looks like it’ll still be hard on your elbow at least. I’m a huge fan of my thumb ball mouse. There are other finger track balls that some people like. I’m partial to the thumb ball ones though. They obviously take some adjusting to get used to, but since I switched, I stopped having wrist pains.
This is the one I’m currently using.
Ouch, the mouse pad bro.. buy her a trackball mouse 🖲. Save her wrist and a ton of frustration.
Logitech Wireless Trackball M570 (Renewed) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K1L6YT7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Zj9ODbBGM2J40
Awesome that she’s trying it out tho! I’m jelly
I actually want this,

Godly concept, i really want one & will continue to search till i find one of modern taste.
And so i did
Edit: Fist contender & i love this idea, its by the thumb.

Final edit : Gonna possibly buy the Logitech
I use this mouse thing with my surface pro. Works awesome because you don't need a desk and your not limited with having to hold a controller.
abcGoodefg® 2.4G Wireless USB Handheld Finger Trackball Mouse (Black+Red) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00URDNGH4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_45Ojyb00HVK73
Microsoft's best product ever.
I've only used finger controlled ones myself, because i don't like the idea of just using my thumb, and I'm not a gamer. I started out with the kensington orbit optical, and I recently upgraded to the kensington slimblade. I've been extremely happy with both.
It's a Logitech Trackman. They don't make those anymore - they ditched the wired ones for wireless and the build quality went to shit. I've used a Trackman since the late 90s. I cannot stand a regular mouse.
Logitech used to be fantastic. But I've owned around eight of the wireless pieces of shit, and they have all failed in some way - most of them, the scroll wheel stops working. The second most common problem is one or both buttons not clicking properly.
I did some research out of frustration recently and found that the Japanese are apparently in the trackball game. I just bought an Elecom trackball - a thumb ball like the Trackman - only they offered it in lefty format, so I jumped on that. Back in my mouse days, I always preferred a left mouse so I could write with my right hand.
So at the moment I have a lefty trackball to the left of my keyboard, and my last remaining decently working Logitech Trackman to the right - because playing games often uses WASD+mouse, so.... I need both.
But when my Logitech breaks, I'll be replacing it with an Elecom, if it holds up - but reviews are all great, so I anticipate it will.
I just found this version of it with a bunch of buttons, might work even better. http://www.amazon.com/3Dconnexion-SpacePilot-controller-display-optical/dp/B0009MG6FW/ref=sr_1_152?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1408027358&sr=1-152&keywords=trackball

This one is nice
You could try a wireless trackball like the Kenzington Orbit or Logitech M570
I should mention also that for a long time I had mouse in one hand, and use my second hand to press buttons (I had two big button that I could bump with my fist). Sometimes as my second-mouse for the buttons I used this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kensington-Orbit-Trackball-ergonomic-ambidextrous/dp/B000HEW0KW. It basically has large button that I could use with the other hand, while using the first hand to steer the mouse. Might be worth considering.
So the vim plugin is actually a browser plugin. I know that firefox and chrome have vim plugins but they are slightly different (different buttons do different things). I know it is a cliche thing to say, but your work should value you and your health much more than installing a plugin or extra software.
So a lot of RSI are quite poorly characterised in terms of what is actually happening. We define them by their symptoms and we do not necessarily understand the cause (which might not be there, it could be combinatorics of different factors). One of the major symptoms is the chronic inflammation which is known to be a bad signal for most things. So the steroidal injections removes the inflammation. Ibuprofen might be for this reason better than paracetamol because it also reduces inflammation. Aspirin is much weaker (I switch between it and ibuprofen).
I have not tried surgery because I learnt how to manage it and I never felt like getting rid of my savings by disabling my hands for months, which I need to work. I don't really have a good reason. It is not as bad nowadays so I should not need a surgery. If at any point it goes downhill, I might consider it.
I believe more in sport. I think it has little to do with muscles often. Grip strength is surely important if it is an issue, so for that reason it it good to have it in mind. I would do cardio more. There is the most evidence that good cardio helps than anything really. I am thinking about looking up these things and share them on this subgroup. Sounds like a good thing.
The worst thing is anxiety and stress nowadays. I am not sure if I'd develop it (at all? to the same extent?) if my hands did not have these issues. Depression and other mental problems due to chronic illnesses and disabilities is a regular phenomena.
Nice caps. I have seen plenty of beige-colored trackballs when I was browsing for one but they are all vintage things on ebay with no scroll option. I'm not sure if you could mod them..
The silver orbit is not discontinued on Amazon, but beware that it doesn't have a scroll ring, although I'm sure there's a ball-scroll mod in guides somewhere.
And you can always opt for the silver Expert.
They definitely exist (you want to search for "mouse retractable cord," or something along those lines -- Amazon, for example), but you probably unfortunately won't be able to find a high end/name brand mouse with that feature.
Edit: Worth mentioning, since I'm extremely anal about mice as well: if your issue with wires is annoyance WRT them getting caught on stuff, the cable being too short/tight, etc., you might consider a trackball mouse. This one has a wire. With your thumb on the trackball, there's no motion of the mouse body itself required to move the cursor, which totally eliminates cord snag issues.
I personally use the MX Ergo. It's wireless, but I was able to fix issues with shoddy wireless signal by giving the dongle a long USB extender and putting it far away from any noise sources.
DEFTなら……!
Ok I apparently have no idea how to use the remind me bot, but i managed to remember https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016QCPRBM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The answer.
Woah, thats insane how much that costs. i'm not too big in to Gaming mice to know why this mouse is so damn revered. although it's no where near the cost of a Trackball Explorer
The one i have, which it looks like your's from the outside* says:
>Wheel Mouse Optical USB ans PS/2 Compatible
Sounds generic, but it's a MS Mouse
I'm just not sure there needs to be a "next level" here.
There are a few distinct variations on the mouse. For example, the 3D mouse, Apple's Magic Mouse, or perhaps a variation on the ergonomic mouse, and let's not forget the trackball mouse.
But, lots of people have tried to make a "next level" mouse without anything really catching on. Also consider how many programs have hotkeys that don't involve a mouse. Lots of power users on all types of systems (definitely including Windows) avoid touching the mouse if they don't have to, as it adds up as wasted time throughout the day.
Instead of trying to design something that everyone else would use, let's start trying to find the problem that you appear to be trying to solve. And to do that, let's start with your day-to-day. What actions do you perform in your normal day-to-day that you feel like would make more sense to move to the mouse? Do you already use an "MMO Mouse" with 20 buttons? If not, this might be the way forward for you.
I find that most people who still use a mouse are either in a workplace environment or they are playing computer games. Note that lots of people casually browsing the internet at home (not playing PC games, and not actively working) aren't even using a mouse at all.
> Touch Pad: Not as good as the MBP13. Its responsive but I miss the force touch. Need to find a way of making it less 'jittery'. I'll be using it almost exclusively (no room for a mouse while using on the train :P) so hoping I get used to it
It will never be as good as the one on the MBP. "Get used to" it being shitty. Get a trackball for the train.
May I recommend an Orbit mouse? All mouse movement is controlled by your fingers and your wrist does not move. It completely eliminates all wrist related RSI injury.
I used these when playing competitively in FPS games with no problem.
Thought about using my Bamboo Pen but I think the lack of buttons would be an issue. I have a Warthog stick (no throttle) plus CH Pedals so I might just have to rebind stuff but I dislike using the 'brakes' for much because it's uncomfortable as a throttle while still using the pedals for roll and without a keyboard I'm not sure how much room I'll have left on the stick.
Has anyone tried a trackball though? Something like this, it still lacks buttons but at least has two + scroll, I'm just not sure if trackballs are responsive/accurate enough for gaming.
