So, non-GPS apps first:
Military Mountainerring that shows how to handle yourself in mountainous terrain.
[Army Survivor Guide](https://play.google.com/store/search? hq=army+survivor+guide&c=apps) (I use the one by Milodroid) is great for learning the necessary skills to keep yourself alive - especially if something goes wrong.
First Aid (I use one by AR Medical). As is always the case, make sure you know how to use the app/book before you need it. If nothing else, know what to do if someone stops breathing, goes into shock or has heat stroke.
Compass - I use Smart Compass. They're not as reliable - strictly IMO - as a standard compass, but they work. The one I use integrates the camera making it easy to aim at an object for orientation.
Moon Phases. There are lots of them, and some weather apps have them integrated, but I got my for free off Amazon App of the Day.
Weather (I use the Weather Channel app.) Always good to have and every phone I've ever seen has one already integrated.
Google Sky Map is awesome for finding constellations and planets at night.
Now for GPS (and related) apps:
All Trails is used mostly for finding trails in an area. It's certainly not an exhaustive list, but really cool if you travel and like to hike in new places.
Google Earth is good for recon and importing tracks into.
Alpine Quest - after a lot of trial and error I chose this over Backcountry Navigator, Androzic, MM Tracker and Google Maps. The feature that sealed it for me is setting different maps up and changing their opacity to see multiple things at once. I normally use a topo map at 100% opacity and a Google Earth map at 30%. It puts barely visible landmarks on the map with the topography.
(But, I wasn't unimpressed with any. All had their strengths and weaknesses - Alpine Quest included. But, I got to where I needed to choose and went with Alpine Quest.)
My Tracks is good if ALL you want is to import a track into Google Earth. (It's easy to do this with Alpine Quest, too, but I'm guessing it uses more battery than just tracks.)
Easy extras:
Without links... The kindle app is really nice - I can take multiple books with me. A music app is great, too. Also, my camera (on my Incredible 2) is pretty good, considering, and it's easy to get out and use.
I would keep it in your pocket or pack, instead of on a hiking stick. I suppose they could compensate for movement, but if it's in your hand, it seems the speed and such gets messed up as swinging back and forth seems to count. However, use it as you're most comfortable, obviously.
Not an app:
I've seriously considered buying something like this - or even a few of them - to have extra power so I don't need to worry about running out of juice.
Never travel without the 10 essentials unless you are 100% positive you won't need a piece. (For example, I hike out my back door (literally, which is AWESOME) and am never going so far I need an emergency shelter. But, I always have a first aid kit, an emergency kit, and a map/standard-compass just in case.
Happy Hiking!
Being in a small space is a great technique for peace. This entire list helps, for me personally ...

(1) Self-swaddling bed (it's like weighted blankets on steroids -- really works):
Making a custom-bed that is for lying down on the tummy, but with a large hole in the mattress and (plywood) bedframe for the tummy to hang down with no pressure on it, and a cut-out for the nose and face to indent through the cushion (like massage beds with a spot for your face to poke through) ... Freeing up the tummy is something that yoga instructors work very hard at, and this bed does it effortlessly, while redistributing body weight to create a therapeutic pressure/weight on the upper chest (feels like an hour-long hug, in the best way)

(2) Removing excess visual stimulation:
Painting/covering the walls indoors to be black (which reflect no light and therefore symbolize visual nothingness), or walking in safe, well-lit areas outdoors at night (where the night sky looks like a black wall of nothingness)

(3) Spending time in a small self-cubby hole
Moving a dresser with a big box on it, or moving a tall book shelf, into the corner of a bedroom, with the shelf-dresser flush against one wall, and 2 feet away from the other wall in the corner of the room, finally a small desk (or compact, adjustable standing desk) is put into the self-cubby that has been made ... Add close-up nature posters, like zoomed in on a leaf, or tree trunk, to the inside walls of the cubby to finish the look ... And/or spend time camping in a car. (I'm currently pioneering a way to get up to 6 feet of vertical clearance in a typical self-thermo-regulated "ready mode" Prius car, by adding a roof-extension disguised as a cargo bag on the top of the Prius, allowing an adult to stand up in the car and be in a cubby space that is a 2'x2'x2' cube, from the arms up).

Technology/Peripherals:
Thanks for the suggestion. That seems fairly reasonable and would fit my desk well.
This is the desk frame I have. The suggested max dimensions is 85"x44" and I would love to take full advantage of that. I tend to accumulate a lot of stuff and I love having a lot of space to spread out. Plus I'm hoping to double the space as a work bench for crafts and stuff.
My end goal, if I had a living space to allow it, is to get two of these frames and have an L shaped desk with a set of shelves between and over head. This would give me a lot of room to work on projects and have all my stuff organized.
I would recommend a desk top with a larger depth like the gerton. The 24” depth of the table top you linked is really meant for counter spaces and the like. Desks usually have a greater depth. When you mentioned have dual monitor arms, that also led me to believe you would need a bit more depth. I have the gerton top, and it’s just enough with my dual monitors, keyboard, and trackpad.
I would also recommend and electric raising and lowering desk stand like this: VIVO Black Electric Stand Up Desk Frame Workstation, Single Motor Ergonomic Standing Height Adjustable Base (DESK-V102E) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071KGDGNK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aDKFDbXKK2EK6
These are nice in case you decide you don’t like the height at any specific point, or if you decide to stand for a bit. On top of that, they are extremely sturdy and take up less room than using drawers as legs on either end.
Amazon. It’s a monitor stand, but works perfect for what I’m using it for.
FITUEYES Tempered Glass Computer Monitor Riser TV Shelf Risers stand 4.7'' High 23.6'' Save Space Desktop Stand for Xbox One/component/flat Screen TV-Black DT106005GB https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A6IZEOC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kuYIAbPB4R48H
If you happen to live in an earthquake zone I’d recommend anchoring the stand and use straps to secure the desktop to it.
Not sure what your budget is but I used this with a Karlby 98” countertop. It works great and it is a perfect fit.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073K1JSW7/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_6k.ZBbHZSWY2W
In regards to charging the second battery, this universal battery charger is on Amazon for 9 bucks shipped. It's well reviewed, only 2 of the dozen reviews gave it 1 star, both claiming incompatibility with a phone, and both had a response from the manufacturer offering to help them via their CS channels. I think that bodes pretty well, I might look into that.
However I'm also considering an external charger as an alternative, this is also excellently reviewed, prime eligible, 2900 mAh, and is only $26.
Yeah, my back sucked for a while - lots of airplane travel, sitting long hours, carrying a 30lb backpack on the same shoulder - it all caught up with me. Things that helped me: I got an inversion table, set up a standing desk - I use that almost all the time. (I started with a Varidesk but wanted more surface area so I upgraded to a $270 desk frame on amazon + a solid-core door which I'm pretty happy with; I overloaded the weight limit (too many monitors) so I have to give it some help when I change height, but I'm almost always just standing.) I tried treadmill desk but discovered I can really only use the treadmill when I'm reading so that (a used treadmill) is sitting off to the side now.
I'm at the point now where I love standing desks (provide they have enough work area).
I got this base for a custom top, might do well with these counter tops, though not on sale right now:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071KGDGNK
Super impressed with the sturdiness and quality, lifts up my large 1" plywood corner desk and four monitors, 3 setting memory, and timer.
My home setup I still have an l-shaped glass and steel desk (I prefer glass for how cold to the touch it is and clean it looks), triple monitor, desktop pc on the centerpiece, and an older 32 inch lcd tv with a setup for my laptop or projects on the other desk to my right. If I were to do it over again, I would get one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Workstation-Ergonomic-Adjustable-DESK-V102E/dp/B071KGDGNK/
And go to home depot and get a big 24x48x2 piece of wood, sand it, stain it till it's good, do a thin polyurethane top coat, etc...
https://www.amazon.com/ECHOGEAR-Triple-Monitor-Mount-Screens/dp/B079NNC2YQ/
And use this for my 3 monitors at home, instead of the stand I currently have. Fixed mounts with a curve, all the way. For value if I were doing a new build, I would get 3 of these as my monitors:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1102898-REG/dell_s2715h_27_1920x1080_led_monitor.html
I prefer 1080p as it's still the end-user style often used.
https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Charging-Specific-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort/dp/B0779K9DG2/
This is the dock I would use for the triple monitor setup. Displayport-to-hdmi cables are all over the place, adapters too. Cheap. This dock does some modest charging, but these Plugable ones have been super solid in our workplace so far.
Definitely move the tv. We have our tv relatively level with the bed but I ended up putting a few books under it to get it right. The middle of the tv is is like top of my head level rather than eye level of that helps you at all.
If you prefer to sit up to watch make sure you adjust it for that. Similarly if you move positions a lot you could put it on something similar to a standing desk type podium where you only need to lift a lever to raise or lower the monitor/tv.
Here’s what I mean in general: Standing Desk Converter
VIVO Electric Stand Up Desk Frame... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073K1JSW7?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Yeah I got inspired to do it by this sub.. I preferred a butcher block bc the IKEA table tops aren’t solid wood. Thanks btw!
It's a pretty unconventional clash between this desk and these legs. I don't recommend those legs, honestly. They don't go low enough, so I have to raise my seat high to be comfortable, yet now my feet don't reach the floor. I'm 6ft.
Really? Most up to date offices will have something if you request it. My company just has ones that sit on top of a desk and they can rise and fall--no dedicated standing desks. Something like this except our original ones were only about ~$200 as they're just a platform we put our laptops on that we can rise/fall. Or we stand at our kitchen areas hightop tables. You can find cheaper options. Walldesks are particularly cheap.
If you're interested in getting one for yourself at some point, I really like this one. It just sits on top of your existing desk instead of being a huge desk in and of itself, and it's roughly 1/3rd the price of a full-sized variable standing desk. I ended up just getting it myself without going through my office and it's been pretty noticeable so far. They have smaller models that are more appropriate for a single-monitor set-up, but the large one works really well for 2.
I always like to stay connected. So I inform myself about 3G prepaid offers for every country before i go there. You will always be able to find offers between 10 and 15€, sometimes even including some voice minutes. However, having data access is sufficient as you can use VOIP to make calls.
In case you go to remote areas, it is worth checking the network coverage maps of the local providers to see whether you will have signal there.
Furthermore, having a way of charging your mobile on the go is super handy. I build myself a MintyBoost but you can also buy stuff in the normal retail market.
Have a good trip!
Just got one this adjustable one and I really like it. The keyboard tray is a little short for me when I'm standing (6'5"). Otherwise, it works great and I'm definitely feeling less like a piece of shit at the end of the work day.
Recommend vivo standing desk. Gives a sturdy feel, hope this can help space wise.

my local home depot has solid core door slabs for about $50. which makes for an awesome desk with plenty of room, then just grab some legs from ikea or even something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ITHJMBI/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3W3STWCK1O3NR

I use a sit stand desk at work and love it. I recommend checking out https://www.amazon.com/Jarvis-Standing-Desk-Bamboo-Top/dp/B07GRG64T1
It's actually a standing desk, and for what it is it's good bang for the buck, although a bit too shaky for my liking.

I was able to purchase this desk on craigslist. I think anything that gets you standing up straight will be good. I can't imagine there is much of a difference between desk models, I'd just make sure you can adjust it to your height.
Thanks! The desk is semi custom. It's a stand up, legs are from Amazon, the top I made out of a solid core door and some oak trim i got at Lowe's. It's 80" wide 30" deep.
Ah good to know yeah might just avoid that cusion for a bit and see what they say about it.
Ive actually been looking into something like this standing desk converter
I bought a VIVO electric base a couple months ago and am extremely happy with it. Fairly priced IMO compared to other options on the market
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071KGDGNK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Our helpdesk guys have spent the last few months setting these up for practically everyone. They seem popular.
We also bought a bunch of motorized L desks for an area we just renovated.
Personally, I'm not even remotely interested. I also don't believe there's much benefit to standing all day vs sitting all day. I just try to get up and move around throughout the day.
tape measure says 13".
Here's a standing desk i've been pondering. It might be sweet on a folding table but gig transportation seems like it'd be a bear. Maybe it's light enough to throw it in the car; i don't know..
*or one of these Spider stands. i picture putting a thin board across the arms and having a stand up platform to work at.
Get this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NCKIU70/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Its great.
A friend of mine recently got a standing desk without the top so that could be one option. I think it would probably be cheaper overall if you got that and just found a tabletop or had one cut for you (or you could do it yourself if you want a nice project to work on).
I have a Laptop/ TV type trey I mount the wheel/HOTAS on when I play.
Something like this
Stand. If you're at home and can afford it, get a standing desk ($128):
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LYB7GRD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Is what I use. I'm tall (6'), and it goes up to 54 inches which is too high for me. One of the first things I looked into since I always got sleepy/fell asleep studying pre-med. Most other desks don't go nearly as high if you're tall, so make sure to check that if you buy a different model. If you go to the library/trying to stay on budget, see if there's a way to stack items and stand? May look weird, but at least you won't get so sleepy.
You can also get boxes for stacking. I did that as a side desk space. Just go to Costco (or similar) and be like "I was wondering if I could get a couple boxes. I bought more than I realized and just want to spread it out more."
I got a Vivo from amazon 189.00, plus a dual monitor mast 25.99. It has functioned very nicely so far (5 months) and a few co-workers have also ordered them.

> what desk and how expensive are those desks?
I'm getting this: http://www.ergodepot.com/Jarvis_Desk_p/jrv.htm
Ergo Depot has a bunch of models in a wide price range (from $500 to $2000+). I got some extra options so I ended up paying about $975 myself. That's going all out, my intention is to alternate between sitting and standing during the day and this is the way I decided to do it.
Other folks just buy a static height desk and use a barstool when they want to sit. There are a lot of DIY solutions I saw mentioned as well when researching.
http://iamnotaprogrammer.com/Ikea-Standing-desk-for-22-dollars.html
I saw that referenced a number of times. I also saw some nifty setups with a higher and lower area and monitor(s) on moutned arms that could be swiveled from one to the other.
Lastly, in between "new expensive desk" and "complete DIY" is http://www.amazon.com/VARIDESK-34563-Pro-Plus/dp/B00JI6NCCK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1415043513&sr=8-3&keywords=standing+desk.
I don't have mine yet so I can't offer anything beyond what I researched going into it. For me, spending more but not having to build anything myself or deal with any of that was a no brainer, I know for many the opposite is true.

Yes legs are from amazon

Recommended to 90, although i read that you would be alright up to 100". Cant remember where I saw that tho. RIP
Thanks. It's this one from Amazon. Looks like it's sold out currently, but other outlets may have it in stock.
I bought my own VariDesk at work, but I understand that it's the most expensive brand of adjustable desk topper and not everyone has $400 to spare on that. A couple of coworkers liked mine and bought knock-offs for $200 on Amazon.
Since I've started using the standing desk, my hip pain has been reduced by about 90%. I still need to work on mobility, but standing for 4-6 hours at work greatly helps.
Thanks for the reply! I will check all of this out. But I really just don't need the drawers. I was thinking about using something like this...
https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Workstation-Ergonomic-Adjustable-DESK-V102E/dp/B071KGDGNK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519799681&sr=8-1&keywords=adjustable+power+table+legs
Expensive. But it would eliminate all the issues caused but just legs.
Hello, I'm looking for a standing desk -- something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B6NGS6E?psc=1
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any that are sourced/sold in Canada. Anyone have any leads to this product or something similar?
Solid find, but I can't quite justify the price. What are your thoughts on these guys I found on Amazon?

I'm sorry for the long links
It's a combination of https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073K1JSW7 and https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50335208/
It was really easy to assemble, only need a drill. Could be done for even cheaper if you don't care about the standing element, I work from home quite often so it's a nice touch.
Thanks! Still missing the Mii Fighters.
The thingy on my desk isn't a monitor riser, it's a Vari-Desk that lets me use my traditional desk as a standing desk. Desk.

I have something very similar to this one from Amazon: fitueyes standing desk. It has lasted two years, and is fairly study, but cheap enough that I expect I'll leave it behind when I'm through.
Album with more pics.

That size is exactly what I'm looking for, but with two posts instead of one for sitting purposes so I can actually put my legs forward.

Problem solved.
Our office bought one of these for each of the cubicle desks because everyone wanted one.

If you don't mind looking a little silly in the office....
I do squats in the kitchen while I wait for my lunch to microwave.
I also have a standing desk riser on my desk and a balance disc I stand on when I am standing, I sort of march back and forth on it, it gets me moving more and it give me steps while I am standing in one place.
The original $500 pricepoint is kinda... outdated, just the frame alone is $200-350 (depending if it’s a single or dual motor model). Add in a standard non-solid wood top for under $100, and you got the going rates for these lower-end standing desks. So, it’s a steal compared to the going rate, but I’d imagine they cheaped out on stuff (like minimum height) compared to other ‘brands’ (they really aren’t much different from each other for this price point) such as autonomous, vivo, massdrop
Edit: in for one, noticed in the confirmation email that they’re also advertising the desk for the price of $400. Somebody changing the prices messed up bigtime lol.

One cord as in one cord connecting to the MBP. The monitor charges the Macbook and acts as the hub for the speakers and usb devices. The desk has a powerstrip on the underside where the monitor, speakers and desk plug in, the power strip is plugged into the wall (you can't see it in the photo, but there's a weird shadow that gives it away).
Actually, those are the kind I am talking about. I work with mostly people that are 50+, and most of them have some kind of disability from military service, so they like the idea of those desks, but when it comes down to it they never use them because of back and knee pain.
This is the desk we have
