Here we go. When you get the dog, start with a Two Week Shutdown to ensure the smoothest introduction of your dog to their new environment. This is super important and something i WISH I knew about when I adopted my dog.

  I don't have experience with huskies but I have heard over and over how they are a difficult dog to own, and require around 2 hours of intense exercise daily. I found this Breed Discussion which may be informative for you. Do you have a dog park nearby? That would be great if its a fenced in area, because huskies are "escape artists".

The dog food we fed Luka was Earthborn Holistic Grain Free Coastal Catch. He loved that stuff but it is pricey. Now with Jack, we were looking for something just as good but not as pricey. Believe it or not, after doing a good amount of research, we settled on Rachel Ray Zero Grain, and he loves it. We're on our 3rd bag and he's been doing great, though if we have to we'll go back to the Earthborn and spend that extra money.

We also add 1 raw egg once a week and give him 1 1/2 sardines (packed in WATER) over the course of a couple days mixed in his food. His coat is shiny and we're seeing no signs that he has any internal issues. He's active, happy...and his ears are doing good.

Oh, and he DOESN'T FART. Ever. Seriously.

For his folds, we use Pampers Sensitive wipes. They are perfume free and also restore the skins natural PH. But seriously, I assume most baby wipes would work well since they're made for babies skin. The main thing is to wipe the folds dry after you clean them. We didn't know that when we got Luka. We were just told to make sure we keep the folds clean, which we did daily. We only found out by googling that we had to follow up with drying. The reason I did the research in the first place is because his folds seemed to be red and his face kind of smelled. We found that the smell was coming from his folds...poor guy. Luckily, it didn't last long so his discomfort was not that extensive.

I switched Stitch immediately to Wellness Core Grain Free Puppy when I first got him. If you do switch, add some pumpkin to it.

Also, the Wellness Core Puppy is a bit expensive, but I figured you'd want the best for your puppy. But there's also Blue Buffalo Grain Free Puppy, which is about $10 cheaper than the Wellness. I've heard great things about both Blue Buffalo and Wellness Core.

My dog is perfectly healthy (and has been for years) on the vegan dogfood and treats I order online. V-dog is what she eats now and I think it's slightly better than Natural Balance which she was on before.

She actually didn't start off on vegan dog food, but we switched her to it when she started to demonstrate skin allergies to most foods - she'd itch a lot, get bald spots of fur, develop pimple-like sores. But since changing her food her skin and coat have been perfect ever since!

And the vet says she's perfectly healthy (except for a really mild heart murmur which is probably congenital and not because of any food).

I haven't tried the Purina in your list, but I have two of my own dogs and two foster chihuahuas so I had to start buying an affordable, healthy food with tiny kibble so the chi's can eat it.
I get the Diamond Naturals from Amazon. Good ingredients and around 1.25 per pound (I do that too!). Also check your grocery shelves. My local grocery store has Evolve on sale a LOT and it's good quality and small bites, too. Cesar recently had a buy one get one free coupon stuck onto their bags. See if you can find some.
Eggs are great! Especially see if you have a local person with a few backyard chickens. We buy a dozen brown free-range eggs for 2.00 here.

I'm in Wisconsin, fromm is great but expensive ($60 for 33lbs), American Premium Natural is another good one that is not quite as expensive ($50 for a 40lb bag). Fish or lamb has worked best, fish if they get gassy.

Sauerkraut is fantastic if they ever get an upset stomach.

This stuff helped a great deal. Here are reasons salmon oil (not just salmon dog food or regular fish oil) can be beneficial. What is her diet? It's pretty easy to switch to a better and grain-free food, and that can go a long way as well. I fed my pibble Wellness Core.

We used to do Halo for our dachshund. We switched to Natural Balance dog food about 2 years ago. It says vegetarian, but it's actually vegan. Surprise! It was cheaper (per pound) and more accessible for us than Halo. Between three 12-15 lbs dogs it last about 2.5 months for us.

The vet has never had a problem with our dogs diet and all their blood work comes back great! The dogs love it too.

Normally I would never buy dog food at the grocery store, but we picked up a bag of the Rachel Ray Zero Grain food a ~5 months ago. We were in a huge hurry and needed food for the next morning.

My dog's fur and poops have been so healthy, we've been using it since then. I used to have mine on Blue Buffalo too, but I think this is working better for her. And it's cheaper! We pay $22 for a 14lb bag. If I remember correctly, the Blue Buffalo were feeding ran about $60/30lbs. There are only two flavors at our store, so I just buy one of each at a time, and alternate whenever they run out.

She had been struggling with some horrible allergies, and now her coat is glossy and looks super healthy. She still gets into stuff outside sometimes, but she is doing much better. Again, I normally comb the dog food recommendations online, but after getting this stuff as a fluke, we're pretty hooked. It works really well for us.

If you can find it locally, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul is a quality food for the buck. Not grain free, but much better quality than purina or the like. Ridiculous name though... In the NW I can find it at Mini Pet Mart a bit cheaper than amazon, right around $1 per pound in a larger bag. Haven't compared prices to grocery store brands but at least for amazon prices, that's cheaper than or right in line with purina depending on what you pick.

I also find Taste of the Wild pretty affordable locally. It's a grain free dog food and is not terribly expensive here, though might be getting out of the purina range. I have a small dog so I just buy a 5lb bag which costs me about $12 (lasts me 3 weeks). Amazon has 30lb bags for $44 which is about $1.50 a lb, but it's a bit cheaper locally for me. Not sure how that compares to purina though.

My dog (60lbs) eats Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula (vegan) which is a bit cheaper and he does great. He has been on it for a little over a year and has great energy levels despite being 11. He just had some blood work done and all came back within range. I thought about rotating between a few different brands to switch things up, but haven't really put much more thought past it since he seems to enjoy it. I have heard great things about V-Dog however.

Edit: A 28lb bag will last him a little over a month, he eats 1 cup BID (twice a day) along with his joint supplement

I'm afraid you won't find anything that's really that great for $1/lb. The closest I can think of is Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. It is probably the best value-for-quality food. Lots of animal protein, no soy, no corn, no animal by-products, and most of the grains are whole grain.

I have worked at a pet food/supply store for four years and we carry everything from Purina Dog Chow (50 cents per pound) to Orijen (rated the last two years as the overall best dog food; $2.50 per pound).

EDIT: I'm not saying Whole Earth Farms is a bad food. For the price, you're getting really good value out of it. Merrick is a pretty good brand of food.

Yesterday I came across Sportmix Wholesomes dog food that has pretty solid ingredients with a higher kilocalorie content per cup (meaning that you can feed less of it than others foods) for a very reasonable price. Right now it looks like it's $30 for 40lbs of the fish and rice blend (if your pup struggles with chicken). Many reviewers say they've found it very useful for dogs with food sensitivities as they don't blend the proteins and keep them separate.

As for cats, I'm of the camp that any wet food is better than dry for them, so if he eats friskies or fancy feast classics or Sheba, they are all high protein and low carb and obviously high moisture, which cats need more than anything. Fancy Feast Classics and Sheba are also grain-free, at least, and many pet owners with diabetic cats are able to feed these due to the appropriate protein/carb ratio.

We feed our pups Nature's Recipe. Mostly because they each eat 8 cups of kibble a day. So it can get very expensive really quick. The v--dog is really awesome (and if I could afford it I would feed it to my pooches) but it is pricey. Natural Balance is another great one.

We boost the kibble with phylum husks, fresh fruit and veg, some vegan sausages, and occasional steamed pumpkin. Their treats are carrots, vegan hot dogs, apples, bananas, and some almond milk yogurt every once in a while.

I tried feeding my two dogs the Natural Balance Vegan kibble. They both loved it, but the French Bulldog would have terrible diarrhea. Went back to Chicken & Potato flavor and will eventually consider making them a fresh home-made rice-based food in the future. Unfortunately, don't have enough time to do it right now.

If you're going to buy dog food for your dog, please buy more expensive food. Check the ingredients and make sure it's good. If you wouldn't eat it, why feed it to something you're responsible for?


I try to give my dogs a raw treat every few days. It's really healthy for them!

I feed mine Taste of the Wild. I buy the 30lb bag and it lasts us about a month. We haven't had to provide any supplemental foods and our vet has approved of her diet and how it positively affects her health. We've also noticed that her coat and skin have greatly improved from when she was first adopted which I think has something to do with her improved diet. I can imagine that as she grows older, we'll have to specialize her diet further but for now, she does great with her dry food.

Try this brand before you attempt to make your own recipe. :) It has made a HUGE difference in the staining and allergies of my American Eskimo. I ended up liking the product so much that my cats are on the same brand of food now. It's not too easy to find in stores like Petsmart but I have a local pet shop that recommends and sells them. It's absolutely grain free!

After going through several diets (including vet prescribed) This is what we have settled on. He is still slightly itchy but it is a world of difference from the other diets we have tried. It seems that salmon is a good choice for pits with skin issues. We do this plus apoquel and life is pretty good.

I work at a rescue league where the health of animals is highly reguarded. This is always what I push on people to buy for their pets. Everyone who works here uses it. It's highly recommended by our medical staff as well. If you look in the review/comment section of this product you will find a similar situation. Don't be fooled by the price. Wet and dry food diet for dogs is ideal as well. You can always buy a smaller bag for a lower price.

With such serious conditions, I'm not saying that you need to feed your dog veg, but it couldn't hurt to maybe look into it and see if it's something that might also work? That's your decision though. It could also maybe help you figure out if he is having a reaction to something due to the meat in the prior foods you had given him, or maybe plant based food ]when trying veg food? At least you might be able to narrow it down if you gave a veg food a shot.

Natural Balance is an all vegan dog food made by a company that also makes meat based dog foods. Fairly good reviews and I don't think they would market it if they knew dogs couldn't be vegetarian.

I know natural balance(vet recommended brand) has a vegetarian canned dog food. I've got a chihuahua and she tends to go on hunger strike in the middle of a veg can more than any other variety. Each can usually lasts 4-5 days. Nothing bad happens to her in the short term on the veg food. If anything it's the least hard on her stomach judging from poop quality.


So I mean, you can feed them commercially available dog food that's just as balanced as normal dog food. You might have a dog with grain intolerance which mean these veggie formulas likely won't work out for you, but if you consult with your vet before switching over they can tell you what to look out for.

If your dog does not have a specific need, then many vets have go-to suggestions.

Until the vet appointment, Orijen is a good (but not-inexpensive) choice. Fromm is a less costly option.

Where are you buying your Fromm from that it's $3/lb?! Just a quick google search yielded quite a few 33lb bags for $45-60. That's still a little over your $1.50/lb budget, but not by too much.

Taste of the Wild is probably your next best bet. Here is the link to a 30lb bag for just under $44. If you have a Costco near you, their Kirklands brand food is also high quality for relatively cheap. I'm not sure if it's grain-free though.

I used to get him Royal Canin because thats what the breeder had him on, but since ive switched all his skin issues have gone away.

We order our dog food from Amazon. I know you don't want to waste time to have it shipped, but it's significantly cheaper online than at Petco. It's called Taste of the Wild. It's grain-free, and that helps with my bulldog's gas problems and its quality keeps the size of poops from being so big. We typically buy the salmon version, but here's the puppy formula which is also grain free.

For treats I give Petco brand bone strips ($10, lasts a month), double chews, BIXBI jerky, and Dogma Biscuits.

The running theme here is grain free, and made from ingredients that a human could consume. Further, the distribution of protein, carbs and fat is evenly distributed in appropriate ratios.

$45 for a 30lb bag Taste of the Wild. Sometimes he gets buffalo breath, but he scarfs this shit down like noone's business. I remember this particular type getting an A or A- on one of those food rating sites, the top ingredients are all meat.

My guy used to have small episodes and it really just came down to his blood sugar and how much he had eaten. I always have food out and supply some healthy treats. He's currently on Purina and doing great albeit the ridiculously high temperatures.

I've been buying this one and happy with it.

We used Natural Balance until one of our dogs developed an allergy to barley. So, we switched to Nature's Recipe. IMHO, Natural Balance is the better brand.

We also cook up vegetables from the farmer's market (a variety of whatever is in season, around $1 a pound, and not toxic to dogs) boiled with TVP, olive oil. And, sometimes, when we are leaving them with my parents, or it is otherwise inconvenient, we use canned food - from Natural Balance and Nature's Recipe.

Some people may argue with me, but from my discussions vets and vetinary specialists, I wouldn't recommend just kibble alone (vegan or not), for optimum nutrition. The fresh vegetables provide perishable vitamins that your dog won't get elsewhere. Besides, it's ridiculously cheap (>$1lb after the TVP plumps with the cooking water) and very easy to make - I make a two batches every 2-3 weeks, freeze one, and put the pot in the fridge till it's done.

And we also supplement with Taurine and L-Carnitine from http://purebulk.com - important if your food does not contain it.

There's no need to avoid soy, or corn, for that matter. Corn is usually a 'filler' however - it's just empty calories and a sign that the dog food is skimping.

I think you are ignorant about dog food, and you seem to be saying that any vegan that feeds their dog vegan food is OK with forcing their dog to be at greater risk. I am ignorant too of lots of things, being vegan takes a lot of time to learn everything. Just the other day I bought probiotics that had milk in them by accident.



This is the one I use am I am confident I am not putting my dog at risk. If you have any evidence I am putting my dog at greater risk I will surely look at this evidence, but I did invest a good deal of time researching this before I switched dog food.

You can still be an awesome vegan without preaching it or letting people online know you are a vegan. You can still advocate and lead by example in real life and make a great impact to the world. I take the same strategy and identify as plant based online, but people in real life know me as vegan. If a online community is constantly causing you negative emotions & stress you need to dip out of that community imo.

Try Fromm That is what the animal shelter used on new dogs because of its track record for being easy to digest. Most dogs can switch in one meal and have normal stool immediately.

I use the green bag adult Fromm for my 2.5 year old. He's been on fromm for 10 months now, not gotten bored or anything.

We started giving our dog better food when his coat started thinning. He was a Great Dane, so short haired, and his coat was see through when we fed him Purina One. After a little while on the "good stuff", his coat was back to normal. We took him off of it for a while and the problem returned, so we kept him on it for the rest of his life.

Now, my suggestion is to go to a smaller pet store, not a chain, and explain the amount of food you go through. We were able to get "breeder" food of good quality for about $1/lb. It had higher protein content, etc. We were using a brand called sportmix for a long time, and it served us well.

I'll probably get some hate for this, but: Our vet recommended we stay away from Blue Buffalo. According to him, there was a high correlation of UTIs when dogs STOPPED eating BB. Later on, that exact thing happened to a friend's dog, so I put some credence in what he said.

I give my Golden Wilderness Blue Buffalo Large Breed
Our vet told us grain-free and large breed. So I researched popular choices for Goldens and that's what I found.

We moved our dogs to a limited ingredient dog food from Natural Balance when one of them started getting sick after every meal. We've since stuck with the premium formula (Link #1) but started out with the Venison and Sweet Potato mix (Link #2).

We do Blue Buffalo Wilderness Grain Free Dry Dog Food, Duck Recipe. We picked this one because four of the first five ingredients are meat and it has no wheat, corn, or soy in it. When we first got her we went from Purina Pro Plan and then through a number of pet-store quality foods (like this one) to find one where she would eat it and her stool was healthy.

• This is $50-$55 for a 24 lb. bag at the pet store (Petco or Pet Smart).
  
  
• We feed her 1.5-2 cups per meal, twice a day. Sometimes we'll add about a tablespoon of cottage cheese or chopped boiled chicken, if she's getting bored with the food.
  
  
• A bag of dry food normally lasts us about a month.

This is what we've been feeding ours and he almost never farts anymore unless we feed him too many treats for being a good boy.

Please feed your dog better food. It will pay for itself in lower vet bills!

The big things are:

• Food: $50 (lasts 2 months)
  
• Flea/tick/heartworm preventative: $100 (lasts 6 months)
  
• Visit to the vet: $60 (once a year)
  
  Throw in some costs for toys/treats/misc. and I'm at around $700~$800 (conservatively) a year.
  
  For food, I get the 35lb bag of Purina Pro Plan Shredded Chicken/Rice.
  
  For flea/tick/heartworm preventative, I get the 6-pack of Revolution. I like this one because I don't have to give her one medication for flea/sticks (like Frontline) and a second medication for heartworms (like Heartgard). I've never found a flea or tick on her and she's never had heartworms.
  
  When I have expendable income (I'm still a college student), I plan on getting pet insurance for her.

My newfie eats Natural Balance's large breed food. She's not really a big eater - probably something like 4 cups a day (I just refill her bowl when it runs out). She's about a year and a half old, and ninety pounds.

Check out Taste of the Wild, too. When I switched to a high quality food (rated 6 stars on that site) I found it to be the least expensive. I buy it for $45 on Amazon for a 30 lb bag. (And with Prime, it ships free).

Dogs are fine on vegan diet. I have got blood work yearly and my dogs are "One of the healthiest they have seen."

The problem with cat's is Taurine. Dogs can synthesize their own but cats can not.

Personally I'd never buy food in general off of Ebay because there are some crazy people out there who could tamper with it or sell unregulated fakes. I order Taste of the Wild off of Amazon. They have the 30 lb salmon variety you're looking at for a few dollars extra than the seller you found. Sure it's a bit more pricy but it'll be delivered straight to your door without having to worry about the seller packing it badly and having it squished or burst open in transit. I've ordered their puppy variety twice already and I've had no problems with my bags arriving on time in one piece; plus their customer service is great so I know that if there ever is an issue, they'll fix it immediately. I'm always skeptical about Ebay sellers purely because you don't know where they obtained their items from or how well they'll pack and ship it, so I recommend buying off of Amazon or waiting for coupons/deals at a local pet supplies store in your area who happens to sell Taste of the Wild.

I have been feeding my dog vegan food for the past 5 years. A lot of people who have dogs with allergies also feed them this particular brand and have seen no problems at all. When i asked my vet about it she said the she recommended the same food to dogs with allergies. As a precaution we got a blood test done twice a year and he's incredibly healthy.

What's ironic is many people feed their dogs garbage brands such Iams which is awful for the dog but still criticize a vegan dog diet. As for cats, I believe taurine is required or they'll die so meat is necessary for them.

Been feeding my dog this for 3 years (just as an experiment and if I noticed anything remotely detrimental I would have no problem putting her back on her old food, which was probably just as shitty as most regular dog food is once you find out what's really in it). Just had her yearly vet appointment and the only thing wrong with my yorkie/shih tzu is an eye issue where she can't make her own tears anymore, a very common problem in the breed and not diet-related at all.
