Thanks for the sweet words! Here are the highlights of my food. Hope it helps!

Breakfast: Weekdays I eat what's below. Weekends are a toss up. If i can swing it, I just try to make it a brunch so I save breakfast calories.

  • 160 calories | Premier Protein Shake - The chocolate one tastes amazing on its own. If I buy the vanilla one, I will mix it with ice and some coffee and it's the world's best venti sized Iced Vanilla Latte! Protip: buy them at Costco!
  • 130 calories | Quaker Instant Original Oatmeal - I used to eat this every morning with 1/2 cup vanilla almond milk. It was nice when it's cold out and kept me full.

    Lunch/Dinner: Usually it's one of these recipes below. I try to keep meals under/around 300 calories to make room for dessert and snacks!!

  • 324 calories | Baked Chicken with Dijon and Lime with a [Caprese Salad] (http://imgur.com/a/lWIyU) (spinach/arugula, 8 cherry tomatos sliced, 1 tbsp Botlhouse Farms Lite Balsamic Vinaigrette, 0.25 oz nuts, 1 oz fresh mozzarella) - best meal ever and great for meal prep.
  • 150 calories | Shirataki Stir Fry Noodles (some combo of meat/vegetables with shirataki noodles with a sauce of 1 tsp PB2, 0.5 tbsp sriracha, 1 tbsp low sodium soy sauce, garlic)
  • 200 calories | Tomato Basil Zoodles - I replace the goat cheese with a Laughing Cow Cheese Wedge and add some chicken.
  • 245 calories | Spicy Sesame Zoodles with Crispy Tofu - I reduce all the quantities so I can make it low calorie and use PB2 instead of real PB.
  • 300 calories | Tom Yum Soup with Fresh Tofu and Mixed Vegetables - I love Thai food and this has been the best/low calorie dish I can find on the menu. Remember to ask for fresh tofu though and then they will charge extra for veggies but it's worth it!
  • 300 calories | Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich (on Sara Lee bread, PB2 and jelly) with Oven Baked Chips
  • 188 calories | Tuna Sandwich with a pickle (on Sara Lee bread with Tuna Creations and light mayo)
  • 250 calories | Turkey Sandwich (on Sara Lee Bread with Sriracha Deli Chicken Breast and spicy brown mustard) with Special K BBQ Chips
  • 220 calories | BBQ Seasoned Chicken Chopped Salad from Safeway - they have some great prepackaged salads if you need something quickly. I usually will add more lettuce to make it feel like I'm eating a lot!

    These are my go to meals but I will always venture into skinnytaste.com to find something new!

    Snacks/Desserts: I LOVE SNACKS. That's why I keep my meals low calorie. I eat the most snacks between lunch and dinner (usually pace myself with 1 an hour between 2pm and 4pm)

  • Fruits! I eat watermelon and grapes a lot cause all the water makes me feel really full (the feeling that you miss when you start dieting). I will also eat different berries, pears, peaches, apples, etc.
  • 140 calories | FiberOne Oats and Chocolate - I ended up buying the Costco box so I'm getting through that. Also I need fiber in my diet when i eat too much protein
  • 80-130 calories | Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurt - the ones with toppings are my FAVORITE. Without toppings, they're less calories but you'll get 11g-12g protein either way
  • 180 calories | Pure Protein Chocolate Bars - best calorie/protein ratio. 21g of protein!
  • 90 calories | Pacific Gold Beef Jerky - bought it on a whim at Costco, been good source of protein
  • 60-280 calories | HALO TOP - needn't say much more
  • 50 calories | Almonds - always nice when you're just dying and need something but are on the way to grocery shop for dinner
  • 60 calories | Ghirardelli dark chocolate square - would usually have one as 'dessert' after lunch
  • 25 calories | Marshmallow - usually curbs the late night snack craving if you pop one bad boy
  • 50-70 calories | Fruit Roll Ups or fruit snacks - always loved them as a child so it's a nice throw back

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time! Learning about eating well can be really overwhelming. I've struggled with gaining weight at times too, so I can relate. I agree with some of the recommendations that have been posted so far (more frequent small meals, grains, bars, multivitamins).

My suggestions:

  • Try to consume high-calorie foods. IMO, the most convenient sources of calories are foods like bananas (a fast way to get 100 kcal), avocados (if you can afford them, lol), dried fruit, dark chocolate - 250 kcal per serving, 225 kcal per serving, granola, rice, quinoa, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. If you can find a trail mix with nuts, dried fruit, and dark chocolate, that’s a great way to get in some calories!

  • Eat healthy fats! Good sources of calories include nuts (especially almonds, macadamia nuts, and walnuts), nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter, etc.), and oils (olive oil, coconut oil). Honestly, one thing I've done before is to buy some coconut oil and eat a spoonful at a time (15ml has 123 kcal!). It doesn't taste like anything, so it's easy to eat, and it's a super-fast way to get calories.

  • You mentioned trying but not being able to tolerate Ensure. I highly recommend other forms of liquid calories, such as protein shakes or pre-made smoothies. These are some I like:
    • Naked Juice smoothies - these contain good-for-you ingredients, and some of them are good sources of protein, too. They're high in sugar, but all of the sugar comes from the fruit (plus it sounds like you need sugar).
    • Innocent smoothies
    • Orgain protein shakes: These are pre-made (ready to drink) and have 140 kcal + 20g of protein. You can also get Orgain in powder form, which is probably more cost-effective, but less convenient.
    • Sunwarrior rice protein powder is dairy-free and vegan. It has less calories than the Orgain (80 kcal + 16g of protein per serving), but it's less expensive.
    • If you decide to try a protein powder, I recommend getting a shaker bottle like this one - they make it so much easier to mix up protein shakes.

  • Definitely try some protein/snack bars, as /u/allycat-alison mentioned. I like Larabars, Luna/Clif bars, and Kind bars.

  • Your energy is probably low for many reasons (not sleeping because of stress, feeling depressed, not eating enough/low blood sugar) - another reason may be having low iron. You could try an iron supplement and see if that helps. Another potential source of low energy is depleted B vitamins, so a B-complex supplement could also be beneficial. This is a multivitamin I found that’s a good source of B vitamins, vitamin D (also related to energy), AND iron. It also contains vitamin C, which helps your body absorb the iron.

  • I know you said you didn’t want your family to find out (and unfortunately, keeping all of this to yourself is even more stressful!). I'm not going to advise you to talk to them, because I don’t know your situation. BUT, your family shouldn't get suspicious if they were to find out you had a physical - a physical is a standard thing that everyone should have regularly, IMO. I think it would be really helpful for you to have one, because your doctor can order bloodwork (again, totally standard/understandable/nothing that should raise eyebrows) and find out if there's anything contributing to your situation, like anemia or low thyroid function.

  • Does your uni have a student health center/offer counseling? I'm in the U.S., and many here do. It's usually included in your tuition, and it's anonymous, so no one would have to know. I would go by your health center and see if they have any nutrition and/or counseling services, because it sounds like you don’t have anyone to talk to, and you should!!

  • Lastly, remember that tobacco is proven to reduce appetite, so if you can, please try to take your friends' help with quitting tobacco. You could also try cessation products like nicotine gum, lozenges, or the patch. Did marijuana not help your appetite? I almost always get the munchies!

I've had this journal thing called My Grandma: Her Stories on the top of my list for a bit. My grandmother is one of the most important people to me. I love hearing the wisdom she has to impart as well as any random story from her past. She loves writing and talking, so it's the perfect gift for both of us really. I'm not that great with starting conversation, and even if I do, I know there I things I don't even know I wanted to know. There are a bunch of questions about life stuff in there that I'm sure I'd love hearing about. I'm sure I could gush about my grandma some more, but yeah. That's my tippy top item.

Somehow didn't notice that you mentioned each list. The above is my main super wants list and really the only thing that I'd want if given the option between all lists. Grandma has a special place in my heart.

My other lists though:

From my food list: A pack of Luna Bars, so that my SO has a decent snack while in class. She doesn't get much of a break and sometimes goes a good 5ish hours without anything to eat.

My music list: This is a bit strange, though I want all of the albums there, none of them are super mega wants. Oddly enough, the super mega want albums are on my high priority/default list. I guess I should change that. That being said, the albums I reallyreally
really* want, are on Bandcamp. Artists that are lesser known and stuff. That'd either be Ott's Mir, Ne Obliviscaris or Naomi's self-titled that I've wanted for quite some time. Though, if it HAD to be on Amazon, the Blade Runner soundtrack would be AMAAAAZING!

Books list: I'm into cyberpunk, so the top of my list right now is between Afrofuturism because rarely are POC represented in sci-fi and I'd love to see who's done what and the Cyberpunk Handbook which is a bit of a parody/joke book.

Vidya games list: The highest are Way of the Samurai 3 and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed "Ultimate Sith Edition"

Finally, my other random assortment of items wishlist: Probably the H&K MK23 airsoft gun. I like H&K, and this is much safer lying around than the actual thing. I won't shoot somebodies eye out with it a la A Chris Story, I promise!

This wiki/blog post is helpful but here is a past comment I made as an answer:


  • A fitness mat (thicker) is nice for the plyo day (easier on the knees) but you otherwise want a thinner mat (e.g., yoga mat).

  • Resistance bands or weights. I have bands and might break down and buy weights. It is just easier and more intuitive. They are fairly expensive though...

  • Pull-up bar. I think this bar works well and it's not too hard to put together. Bonus: bands.

  • Chair for certain exercises.

  • Yoga blocks. I have not used them and you can get away without them but I can see their use. They make stretches easier (or harder) and are demonstrated in p90x.

  • Protein shake and bars. I hear the p90x products are actually very good but they're definitely expensive. I opted for Optimum Nutrition Whey Powder with a cheap blender bottle and these bars after a little research on /r/fit and google.

  • Lots of water and even more motivation! It feels like such an accomplishment after each day though. Off to go do Plyo for week 3!

    Ninja Edit: Heart rate monitor and push up bars are two very optional but very useful items that I plan to invest in soon.

I know what you are dealing with, and I'm so sorry that you're going through it.

What I've found helpful is to try making different levels of effortlessness for various daily tasks. Basically, it's just having contingency plans that I can implement as needed. Making them pleasant is also important.

For example, here are my breakfast contingencies:

  • DEFCON 5: Use whiskware to make protein pancakes. (1 cup of water+1 cup of pancake mix+1 optional egg, shake it up, squeeze onto skillet, and eat; add chocolate chips, blueberries, or whatever you want if you're in the mood.) Or make scrambled eggs and toast.
  • DEFCON 4: Oatmeal of choice (tip: no need to measure water precisely, just pour some boiling water directly from a kettle to make it as thick or thin as you like) or some healthyish cereal with oat milk (because oat milk keeps longer than dairy milk, which means fewer surprises, and tastes the most like dairy milk out of all the options)
  • DEFCON 3: Instant oatmeal cup, Kodiak to-go cups, etc. These cups are great to have on hand, and lots of brands make lots of kinds of them. Go wild.
  • DEFCON 2: Tsogo in a blender bottle, or whatever meal replacement powder you prefer (BlendRunner can help you compare options)
  • DEFCON 1: Soylent meal-in-a-bottle, Ensure Complete, Met-Rx meal replacement bars, or any equivalent zero preparation product that's specifically meant to be a complete meal replacement, because you need the nutrients and calories when things are this tough. (Beware the really small, cheap meal bars. They're too small to be satisfying, so you end up eating a bunch and it doesn't save money.)

    Another thing that really helped me a lot was learning to drink more water. For almost everybody, this sounds as simple as just grabbing a water bottle and making an effort to change habits. It probably doesn't even occur to them that this might need to be streamlined for people like us.

    For me, here's what worked:

  • The right water bottle is big enough that you won't need to get up to refill it often, insulated well-enough that the small pleasure of ice can be added before you go to sleep and still be there in the morning, and – perhaps most importantly, I found – has a lid that doesn't even require you to open it when you want a sip (because people like us really do need to save every spoon possible)
  • The right ice tray doesn't require you to ever wrestle with it. You don't need to get rid of your other ice trays, but silicone ones will never cling too hard to the ice. This makes you more likely to get the ice, and the ice (if you're like me) will make the water more pleasant, and making it more pleasant makes it require less mental effort to get yourself to reach over to take a sip.
  • The right reminder won't require you to press a button to deactivate an alarm, won't ever make you scramble to turn it off so you don't wake up your roommate, and can be ignored relatively easily (just turn it to face away) so that you're still in control.

    These are all things that require spending some money upfront, but are cheap to maintain.

    Basically, the strategy is to accept that you're already doing what you can to help yourself, so making the tasks easier will let you do more and live better with your limited energy. Having contingencies that accept how bad some days can be will help to keep one very bad day from turning into a very bad week because you won't need to stretch yourself to get something done when you can least "afford" to do so.

    Don't be embarrassed or ashamed by the lengths you need to go to in order to live decently. Others won't get it, but we both know that you're already used to people not really understanding.

Maybe instead of a cheat day or meal, you just add in small treats to your daily food? Personally, I have a sweet tooth but have found that eating a couple dried dates or a small piece of (good) chocolate after dinner will satisfy me -- but keeping things like snack foods, ice cream, etc. out of my house is a big part of that. If I have the food there, I'm much more likely to justify eating some of it.

I also have these protein bars, which I'll have with some orange juice towards the end of the evening (they're sugar free, so they don't conflict with each other and peanut butter chocolate and orange is actually a combo I really enjoy). They will satisfy my cravings for something sweet, but I factor them into my daily intake so it's not really a "cheat"; plus being protein they are more satiating than a candy bar would be.

Personally, I don't really believe in cheat days/meals. I think it's perfectly fine to occasionally go over my calorie budget, and I don't get down on myself if I do sometimes, but I will always track, even if that day ends up being at or above my TDEE. I think it's easier and more effective to allow yourself small treats regularly instead of waiting all week for your special "cheat" time then going all out.

TL;DR: allow yourself small treats regularly versus large cheat days/meals and keep things that tempt you out of the house in favor of healthier options (protein bars and dried fruit versus ice cream and chips or whatever)

True nutrition and their vegan formula is the cheapest before shipping. You'll need to buy about 10lbs upfront to really get some savings after shipping though. Otherwise, there's plenty of protein products that are in about the same price range but aren't the cheapest thing ever, check out your local health foods store (Nature's Pavillion, Sprout's, Whole Foods, etc) for a selection or search Amazon.

I've tried Garden of Life, Plant Fusion, Vega, and True Nutrition and they were all good, with True Nutrition being the least tastey. Plant Fusion is my personal fave but we all have different preferences. One fun thing I like to do with Plant Fusion it is mix it by hand in milk and it ends up clumping in such a way that the clumps get soaked through and are like marshmallows in chocolate milk :3. Plant Fusion does not clump at all in water. I've also tried rice and hemp protein from Trader Joe's and other brands, and omg they were awful.

For bars, everyone I've ever met loves builder bars. They really are just super tastey chocolate bars. I stick with the mint or peanut butter flavor, although sometimes I'll get smores. Watch out because they sadly just released a line of super-high protein bars with whey. Probar just came out with their protein bar and it's more airy and crunchy and I wasn't a fan of the cookie dough one I tried. The science of the optimum metabolic window (which prompts the recommendation to eat w/in 30-45 minutes of working out) is pretty shaky. It may or may not be necessary to consume some protein and carbs to fuel optimum muscle repair during that time, but it certainly won't hurt! For me, eating right after a workout helps stave off the "oh my goodness I'm so hungry I could eat eight hippos" impulse and headaches, too.

I also think of a post-workout protein shake or protein bar as my source of extra workout-day calories, so I don't have to mess with my meal planning for the rest of the day. I like Optimum Nutrition's whey protein to mix with milk or coffee and the Think Thin protein bars. (Hate the branding, love the macros.)

So funny, this exact same thing happened to my mom. Sudden, complete aversion to red meat...

Tempeh is pretty great -- 30g in a cup! Here is a delicious recipe for balsamic maple glazed tempeh... I'm pretty sure I've made it 10 times. A tip: reduce the balsamic vinegar to 1/4 cup and increase the other liquids a little bit to compensate. I found the vinegar taste to be too pronounced in the original recipe.

Seitan is really high in protein, too, and as far as grains, quinoa's where it's at. Also add in some Clif Builder's protein bars (the chocolate mint is so, so extremely tasty) for an extra 20g protein here and there. Good luck!

I discovered Clif Builder bar's recently. 20g protein per bar! I feel like I've hit the jackpot. It's a lil pricey (about $7 or $8 per 6pack), but worth it since I'm getting more strict with my cut/macro counting.

I also found low carb/high protein flatbread at target for easy sandwiches while i'm out/about/out of town.
these are both pretty much like manna from heaven for me right now, bc I don't eat meat, and travel often and don't want to starve or rely on restaurants in whichever new city i'm in at the moment.

I always keep a bag of honeycrisp apples and an apple slicer at my desk. Bananas are great too but don't keep fresh as long. I also have a small stash of WW branded chip bags/protein bars, and Pure Protein Bars (they feel like eating a candy bar and most of them are only 5 points and extremely filling)... I personally like to keep an abundance of zero point stuffs and just a small pile the snacks with points because I instinctively will go for whatever snack I have the most of. Good luck ditching the vending machine!

First, I would recommend these tasty protein bars. They have two flavors (cookie dough and cookies and cream!) that are net 3 carbs for a bar. I find them to be very filling, and they'd be awesome with a morning coffee.

If you want to do coffee and can handle some fat in the morning I love BPC, and it keeps me full until lunch time.

Everyone seems to have their own take on it, so here's my recipe:

  • 12 oz hot coffee
  • 1/2 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 - 2 tsp of coconut oil
  • a few splashes of vanilla extract (the fake stuff)
  • cinnamon to taste
  • 1 - 3 Tbsp heavy whipping cream depending on how much cream you prefer in your coffee. I find more makes it creamier!

    I use a cuisinart stick blender (but mine only has 1 speed unlike the one I linked), to blend it all together. The more you blend it and the more heavy whipping cream you have, the more deliciously frothy it gets.

    It tastes like baked goods! I've found I need to be careful with how much coconut oil I put in, when I put in too much it gets this weird oily texture that I hate. But with the right amount its awesome.

I love the bars man because they're about the same price as a candy bar, and they taste like a candy bar, but they give me amazing clean energy.

I did vegan keto for 5 months and liked the way it made me feel/look! The only issue for me was going out to eat with people. Since I was trying to stay under 20g of carbs, I couldn't really eat much off of a menu besides vegetables slathered in olive oil or avocado/tofu things. I found two protein bars that are really low carb like Julian Bakery's Pegan Bar (don't bother with any flavors but vanilla cinnamon roll) and the No Cow Bar. The routine I'm doing (Austin Dunham beginner routine) involves doing 3 sets of

pushups

diamond pushups

*wide pushups

All 3 sets of one exercise are finished before moving onto the next one. My question is: how can I progress all three of these pushup types? I usually see diamond pushups recommended as a step up from regular pushups. How can I make each excercise harder while still having it work the part of my body that it already does?

More generally, what is a good resource for finding progressions for any kind of bodyweight excercise? Progressing excercise one aspect of bwf that I think I haven't paid enough attention to, and I want to make sure that from now on, I don't spend too long working on an excercise after I've mastered it.

Random last question: what do you guys think about Clif Builder's Bar from a nutrition standpoint?

Chia seeds, nutritional yeast, quinoa, chickpeas, greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, and protein bars are my favorite non-meat proteins! I'm not currently vegetarian but I was for over a decade previously and still maintain a fairly light meat diet by American standards.

I'm really picky about my beans but I have found I enjoy them a lot more if they're not overcooked to hell and incorporated into salads/tacos/etc. Maybe try easing into them that way!

I really like these vegan protein bars. They have a good macronutrient balance, calorie content, and keep me satiated for a bit. Also, you should check out NautrallyStephanie on instagram. She's vegan and has a vlog series on YouTube plus has a workout/meal plan if you join her online page for about $10/month with a minimum of 3 months (b/c she has a 12 week workout challenge). I think it would be worth it to help you get into the groove and have a bunch of recipes readily available.

Be on the lookout for Daiya Greek Yogurt. My grocery store starting carrying it.

My girlfriend felt the same way about giving up greek yogurt, eventually she decided she really liked these No Cow Bars for their high protein, low calorie, low carbs, low fat ratios. And tasting pretty good of course.

Breakfast protein shakes with some greens in them are also a good option.

My sister has lunch meat roll-ups for breakfast as she doesn't like to eat for a while. She eats them on the drive to work and wraps them in cheese so they aren't slimy.

I have a small lunch bag that has a frozen gel pocket in it. I put that in the freezer at night, then put my lunch in it. (I also put a 1/2 full bottle of water in it to freeze.) This keeps my lunch cool in the car all morning long.

I don't eat Slim Jim, but I do keep some beef jerky in the car. Plus I keep a Quest Bar in the car. They are expensive and I can usually only eat half. Plus, they taste frickin awesome after being in the hot car all day.

Yes, the main thing is to eat very little carbs. 20 at most. Be careful when reading the nutrition though. Did you have a whole bag of that bacon? Because one bag can have multiple servings.

I think your assumption starts from the wrong angle.

I wanted to try meal replacement shakes, since I was eating very poorly and couldn't stay consistent. I reached out to a few friends, one of which had been doing Herbalife for 4 years. He is extremely fit, and has a number of people in his organization who are fit or became fit. I think my brevity in my initial reply has contributed the most to this miscommunication.

Some people are selling Herbalife, and doing it in an evil way in the process. There has been a few scandal in that regard, and those involved usually get expelled from the company pretty quick. Also, Herbalife recently updated their return policy so that victims can get most or all of their money back. None of the people I have met or worked with follow that kind of procedure, and specifically advise against "toxic volume", or the act of selling to people who don't want it.

I am open to new things, and if you have something better to offer, I am willing to listen. There are a number of products in the Herbalife catalog I buy elsewhere; usually for price, but sometimes for taste/texture, and once in a blue moon for nutrition. You'll have trouble beating convenience though, they ship straight to my house ;)

I'm not gonna make my million growing my business, so in that regard I'm not sold. I signed up as a seller to get the discount, and got 3 promotions based on volume I bought for myself (and have since consumed). I have switched away to other products when it was in my best interest (eg. Vega Protein Powder and Quest Protein Bars ), I don't sell for or represent either of those companies.

And if it really was about dollars spent, then I am seriously owed an Oreo Life Coach :/

I was curious, so here are the numbers:

    All the other supplements are unnecessary IMO. I estimate ~$8 for the other foods listed per day, so that's a total of $15.24/day or $457.20/month.

Fellow hard-gainer here. I have tried the powders but found I absolutely hated everything about it. The taste was awful (no matter what I tried, including expensive options, including mixing with other things, including trying smoothies, etc.) I just hate whey protein. It's disgusting to me.

The other thing I found is, more than the calories, I needed protein. The rule of thumb is 1g of protein for every pound of body weight, every day. If you're 125 lbs, that's 25g of protein 5 times a day. If you eat that as a meal, that's like two chicken breasts or a gigantic steak, five times a day. Expensive as all hell.

So what I ended up doing that I found worked really well was looking for meal replacement bars that concentrated on high protein. Even then it was really hard finding a bar that was palatable, but I wound up loving Builder Bars, specifically the Chocolate Mint Builder Bar. Each one has 20g of protein and 270 calories. You can get them for around $1.50 a bar if you buy them by the box, so as meals go it's dirt cheap.
