I'm big into anime, reading/writing/words in general + board games. My lists reflect that somewhat ! I started reading when I was 3-4 thanks to my oldest sister, and many classmates and teachers were surprised or even disbelieving when I entered preschool already able to read. I got called a nerd since elementary but I never took it as an insult, since I really enjoyed reading and I saw it as the reason I was able to do so well in school in the first place (though referred to as a nerd, I actually was never very studious). I was also called a "walking dictionary" during junior high, which I also took as compliment!
Board games is a funny one. I always liked the classics growing up and went out of my way to learn the more "obscure" ones like backgammon and othello, but didn't know about "modern" board games until I started college, where I walked into an "English conversation club" meeting out of curiosity (they used anime characters in their posters...) . Turns out, they played board games as a way to naturally get conversation going. And it seemed to work really well, and I loved it! Though English is my second language I learned it early enough (at around 7 y/o) that I didn't gain much skill from the actual purpose of the club, but I think it definitely helped me develop socially in general, plus it was nice to interact with different international students. I came to love board games because of it and once I ended up coming back home to community college was able to continue the habit by briefly becoming a regular at a board game cafe. I'm busier these days, but have by now gathered my own small collection of board games (':

My recommendations from books I read in the last year or so (yes, these are all VERY STRONG recommends curated from ~100 books in the last year) -

Science fiction-
Derek Kunsken's The Quantum Magician (I would describe it as a cross between Oceans Eleven with some not-too-Hard Science Fiction. Apparently will be a series, but is perfectly fine as a standalone novel).
Cixin Lu's very popular Three Body Problem series (Mixes cleverly politics, sociology, psychology and science fiction)
James A Corey's The Expanse Series (which has been made into the best sci fi tv series ever!)
Hannu Rajaniemi's Quantum Thief series (Hard science fiction. WARNING - A lot of the early stuff is intentionally mystifying with endless terminology that’s only slowly explained since the main character himself has lost his memories. Put piecing it all together is part of the charm.)

Fantasy-
James Islington's Shadow of What was Lost series (a deep series which makes you think - deep magic, politics, religion all intertwined)
Will Wight's Cradle series (has my vote for one of the best fantasy series ever written)
Brandon Sanderson Legion series (Brandon Sanderson. Nuff said. Creative as always)

Manga -
Yukito Kishiro's Alita, Battle Angel series (the manga on what the movie was based)

Non-Fiction-
Jonathan Haidt's The Righteous Mind - Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion (and how we are not as rational as we believe we are, and how passion works in tandem with rationality in decision making and is actually required for good decisionmaking)
Rothery's Geology - A Complete Introduction (as per title)
Joseph Krauskopf's A Rabbi's Impressions of the Oberammergau Passion Play, available to read online for free, including a fabulous supplementary of Talmud Parallels to the NT (a Rabbi in 1901 explains why he is not a Christian)

Audiobooks -
Bob Brier's The History of Ancient Egypt (as per title - 25 hrs of the best audiobook lectures. Incredible)

Academic biblical studies-
Richard Elliot Friedman's Who Wrote The Bible and The Exodus (best academic biblical introductory books into the Documentary Hypothesis and Qenite/Midian hypothesis)
Israel Finkelstein's The Bible Unearthed (how archaelogy relates to the bible)
E.P. Sander's Judaism: Practice and Belief, 63BCE-66CE (most detailed book of what Judaism is and their beliefs, and one can see from this balanced [Christian] scholar how Christianity has colored our perspectives of what Jews and Pharisees were really like)
Avigdor Shinan's From gods to God (how Israel transitioned from polytheism to monotheism)
Mark S Smith's The Early History of God (early history of Israel, Canaanites, and YHWH)
James D Tabor's Paul and Jesus: How the Apostle Transformed Christianity (as per title)
Tom Dykstra's Mark Canonizer of Paul (engrossing - will make you view the gospel of Mark with new eyes)
Jacob L Wright's King David and His Reign Revisited (enhanced ibook - most readable book ever on King David)
Jacob Dunn's thesis on the Midianite/Kenite hypothesis (free pdf download - warning - highly technical but also extremely well referenced)
The CELT (Corpus of Electronic Texts) database hosted by UCC hosts transcriptions of many Old Irish texts. There are some English translations, though they can be difficult to dig up. Nonetheless the database contains a wide variety of material the narrative literature section includes mythology.
Ignoring the somewhat dodgy-looking website MaryJones.us contains a wide selection of Irish (and Celtic!) material and more translations. The only real downside to MaryJones is that the sources of translations aren't always provided, so the accuracy cannot be checked against the actual texts the translation is working from. Nonetheless, the majority are good translations.
Irish Literature which includes many of the historical and mythological texts that CELT also has, and some Pre-Christian Inscriptions.
In terms of books, The Táin, early Ireland's great epic is a good one. I've yet to read the latest translation, admittedly, but I do quite enjoy Kinsella's version: he manages to capture the feel of Old Irish, so to speak, and its occasionally choppy narrative style, while making the text legitimately readable. It stays true to the text while still being accessible.
Likewise, Jeffrey Gantz's Early Irish Myths and Sagas is an excellent introduction to some of the more interesting, and important myths of early Ireland. The translations are very readable - though at times he has sacrificed the tone of Old Irish to do so.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Tales of the Elders of Ireland as translated by Ann Dooley and Harry Roe, has retained the Old Irish flavour, and is therefore occasionally difficult to understand.
In terms of secondary material, you'll have to be a little more specific as to what you're looking for. Miranda Green has a pretty good book, but she runs into the same issue that we all run into: we don't know how the myths that we have were perceived by or influenced the people who created them.
All of our stories, all of our information, really, is relayed to us through manuscripts that were created primarily in monasteries (though we have some created by laypeople and not monks, they're younger, and fairly well-removed from whatever paganism may be represented in the texts.) Few (if any) of them provide any commentary, or meta-analysis - and what we do have is pretty spare (ie. a note that the scribe doesn't believe any of what he's just written.)
The texts do tend to uphold the laws that we have, so I suppose you could argue either way: did the myths influence the laws, or the laws influence the myths?
But as I say, as we have no sources, really, from pre-Christian Ireland, only material that has been transmitted through a Christian lens, it's hard to know how the remaining texts were treated. Granted, their preservation does indicate that they were regarded with a certain level of reverence, but their actual influence is unknown. There is some literature that compares the ways in which the Christian authors follow some of the tropes of myth in their own writings of saints lives, but I'm not sure if that's what you're after.
There are also two books of Sailor V manga.
There are several side stories in the Sailor Moon manga, which include Ami's First Love, The Lover of Princess Kaguya (basis for the S movie), and Chibiusa's Picture Diary (which includes the story of the vampire little girl that Chibiusa meets).
I'm pretty sure those are included in the Sailor Moon compilation books but I am not 100% certain of that.
If you're looking for more Sailor Moon content, there's the live-action show Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (some people like it, I'm not one of them) and the Sailor Moon musicals (which do a great job of maintaining the look and feel of the show in live action). You can see some of them on Youtube, they're definitely worth at least checking out. The early ones with Anza are the best imo.
If you're into games, you might check out the SNES game Sailor Moon Another Story, there's a fan-translated version out there now. It contains a new storyline where a time traveler prevents the deaths of certain bad guys and lets them loose on the world again.
Finally, there's probably an episode of S that you haven't seen... it was produced for a Japan-only video game for little kids called Kotaete Moon Call. Sure it's a filler episode, but it's got some fun and entertaining moments in it.
My hesitation definitely won't stop me from doing it, but there's something that definitely makes me nervous. You might be right that it's my imagination doing a bit of work on the back end. I grew up reading fantasy books and have always liked fantasy that took magic and religion and grouped them together. For me, a god you can pray to and invoke as a super-power is really cool (for example, The Rose of the Prophet trilogy by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman has a great setup of gods for their universe) and have always loved those types of fantastic stories.
Wow, I just fell in love with the Chroma Worsted yarn Super too expensive for the silly stuff I usually crochet, though.
To top off your order, I'm loving the shine on Nebula.
I'd love to read this manga if I were to win.
Always be a Happy Hooker!
Sounds like he views reading as a chore and not a form of entertainment. It may be that he hasn't found a book that clicks with him yet. Try focusing on his interests. Does he have a favorite movie? If its been adapted from a book, it might keep his interest.
Take clues from how he spends his free time. What kind of games does he play? Both Halo and Warcraft have their own line of books. I think it boils down to he need to find reading entertaining, and only he will be able to make that distinction.
He are some choices to try out:
Calvin and Hobbes, Far Side, or even try manga, Naruto is very popular.
Good luck with finding the something that he likes.
I am going to actually say you should not read Watchmen, which is usually high on people's list until you read more superhero stuff. the characters in that are superheroes cast in gritty realism.
Art / Graphic Novels
Maus -- very popular, very discussed, very good
Sandman -- Once you get over how 80's gothic this is, it is a superb story...for all 10 volumes.
TransMetropolitan -- Cyberpunk Hunter S Thompson
Fables -- Hands down one of the best series in terms of scope and planning.
Manga
Akira -- This will take you week to finish the whole series.
Pluto -- Though an actual knowledge of Astroboy would be wonderful for this, this manga is so good i was shocked at how sobering a manga could be.
Superhero
Batman -- I am going to break rank and say that Frank Miller's Batman miniseries The Dark Knight Returns isn't the best place to start atleast for Batman. It is a good read along with the Knightfall trilogy) but it is dense and famous becasue of when it was released. I am recommending Scott Snyder's new 52 Batman story arc Court of the Owls which is a two part arc edning with City of the Owls. This will also set you into current Batman. there are things that have happened before, the fight is against a new villian rather than an old one with tons of backstory. It is also drawn with style and grace and the whole thing is entertaining.
Green Lantern -- Rebirth -- This is completely one sided because I love Green Lantern and space shit. This is the beginning of the Geoff Johns run which will spill out into a huge decade long narrative culminating at The Blackest Night.
----------
As for other superheroes here are reading lists for DC and Marvel. It is really up to you what you find interesting. If you are into X-men, this podcast is really fun to get caught up with everything that has happened since the 70's. It is also hosted by a very knowledgeable husband and wife team.
The vast majority of the 'witchcraft' books are reconstructionist and 100% shit made up and adapted from myths and legends.
Wicca was created in 1954 and any book remotely connected to "wicca" is 100% reconstructionist, basically the opinion of the author or whoever taught them.
Some authors, Cunningham for example, are far more well respected but in the end you aren't practicing something people did 100 years ago, 1000 years ago, 10,000 years ago. If it's in a book like that it's almost certainly someone's personal folk-magic.
The exceptions to this would be stuff based on earlier sources, like Solomonic magick which mostly draws from texts like Clavicula Salomonis Regis (Lesser Key of Solomon) which is a compiled grimoire or 140 spells from the mid 1600's which may or may not be based on texts from the 1400-1500s.
Unless a book is claiming to be newly divined/gifted information but then it is absolutely someone's interpretation of magick or the alleged interpretation of spirits/entities they were contact with.
Magic(k)/witchraft/druidry/asatru isn't like Christianity where you have a documented history going back 1700 years (Counsel of Nicaea and then moving on to any particular denomination's history which may be tens of years old or 1700ish years old) where you have a documented history.
Just like organized religion, magic(k)/witchraft/whatever is something that is very personal. You adapt what works for you, you adopt what calls to you.
You want to start somewhere? Start with mythology.
That's a good start.
I'd also find the Audubon society book for trees and the like in your area, you should be able to find one for your region on Amazon used for 5-10$. Becoming aware of the plant life in your area will help you be able to find materials from the earth instead of coughing up money to some 'new age' shop or witchcraft supplier like 13Moons or Azure Green for a horribly overpriced piece of wood or herb.
Haha. Well the series does that to you.
Well the next batch of books are going to be released in a second box set on Nov. 4 with volumes 24-46.
Amazon Link
Trying to think of other things you can do to stall him haha. There's the anime collection sets which contains seasons, and a couple of movies out in English (The Desert Princess and the Pirates - Adventures in Alabasta , Strong World, and upcoming Film Z). After he finishes the books, the Desert Princess one should be alright and I say refrain from purchasing Strong World until you manage to get the second box set. The film is set after the events the volumes contain in that box set. There are a couple of One Piece games out like the recent Unlimited World Red, although it might be huge spoilers as he isn't caught up all the way. Model Collections of the One Piece pirate ships like the Going Merry are also available.
There are two others I know, though they're a little less serious in tone, I still like them, very similar in style to the first one. They're both part of a series, with each book havbing a different focus.
http://www.amazon.com/Yokai-Attack-Japanese-Monster-Survival/dp/480531219X/ref=pd_sim_b_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=06K7ZZJJ5PGYF6CNB5CX
This one focuses on Yokai. These books are "survival guides" of a sort (like I said, less serious in tone), with each entry giving a description, a depiction, and a mothod for dealing with it. I enjoyed the lighter tone and the art, and it made for a quick read before bed.
http://www.amazon.com/Yurei-Attack-Japanese-Ghost-Survival/dp/4805312149/ref=pd_sim_b_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=06K7ZZJJ5PGYF6CNB5CX
This one focuses on Yurei (Japanese ghosts), and actually was the more informative of the two for me. Whereas the first book focused on different kinds of Yokai, this one focuses on famous ghosts and what they did.
I personally have a deep love of Yokai, for a number of reasons. They have a way of popping up throughout even modern culture, and the sheer amount of them makes them fun to research. Plus, I'm a huge horror fan (especially j-horror), and they occasionally pop up there too. I hope you enjoy the books, and maybe get interested in Yokai as a result!
Hey, I got you covered. So here's my strategy: try to minimize on the rupee per page. A general single volume manga would cost around 500 bucks, for essential 200 odd pages. Kinda too much, but ok given the value added compared to a general paperback. Also, given that you are starting a collection, you will most probably want to collect all the volumes i.e. complete the series. So it should preferably have lesser volumes. Based on that I recommend these
If you're looking for manga series whose individual books contain a large number of pages, try searching "manga omnibus" or "manga all in one" on amazon. There's quite a few, and if you're willing to wait, you could wait for price drops (I recommend keepa.com to check and notify you for price drops on amazon.in)
Happy shopping, and let us know what you buy.
This movie might suck, although I'm hoping it doesn't, but either way, I really strongly encourage everyone to check out the original manga. It's one of the most far-reaching kickass sci-fi stories I've ever read. Sprawling, ambitious story over a bunch of volumes, really wonderful characters, and extremely easy to get invested in. I'm thinking of rereading the whole bunch now that it's back in the mainstream.
The new release in December was only a digital one as far as I know all around the world - it's sort of unclear if that is just a redo of a lot of the older stuff but it seems to be connected to [the new deluxe editions coming out in February] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1632364212/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).
The caution at buying these by most people is the lack of original status, in that the heavy porn scenes are removed for less direct ones. While I agree this is not the best for people that want to experience it all I actually think you should get them and try to get your hands on the uncencored both. My reason for this is as the Deleux edition description says it is supervised by Shirow Masamune and is considered definitive, he has also been quoted several times on this sub as saying he believed that the sex scenes added nothing to them and were happy for them to be removed, as he seems to have continued this trend here. His reasons of course as all speculation if you read them, I've never read anything by him explaining why he liked them being removed but the usual things would be; wider audience possibilities or separation from his other work (you know what I mean) or the answer of 'taking flak' for it.
In the end, they are all still Ghost in the Shell and you should read it. Most people, however, going from SAC or the movies do not really get the mood of the manga and it is a bit fast paced in its movement between jocularity and philosophy and cop drama alongside its strong explanations of the cyberpunk ideas that Shirow explored. So be ready for something different if you are coming from those angles - I have always heard, and personally found, its best to do all the animated content then go to the manga.
Wow! Thanks, individual.
So you took this yourself or you are sure it's from the new edition? If that so, thanks again. I cannot read it fully but even like that it makes more sense than the Spanish gibberish text. Haha. So versions like this one, apart from the two missing/censored pages come in Japanese reading order and sound effects plus the previously missing notes, right? Awesome!

I aspire to be the JK Rowling of the LGBT community. My passion is writing I am working on a novel :D Anyhow music really helps me with my writing a lot so any of these songs would be lovely. And if you ever wanted to read something I have written let me know :D
If you would prefer to gift one thing that is tangible then this book would be lovely because reading is a huge hobby of mine and I just got into horror manga :D
Thank you for the contest.
Also, what is your hobby?
This is Roasted Sesame Swaweed snacks which sounds REALLY weird, but it tastes super delicious! My sister can eat a whole package of these in a few minutes, and she is also intolerant.
cheese me please!
Sailor V would be amazing <3
Do yourself and your friends a favor and start collecting the trades. I've realized that it's a lot easier for people to pick up a new manga when they have something physical to hold and read and not just a website or torrent. If they get hooked they can easily find the rest online.
If they're skeptical about picking up the manga from the beginning, maybe because of the art style or what not, try getting them to watch the first thirty or so episodes which goes all the way up to the beginning of the Arlong Park arc, then try to ween them onto the manga or convince them to stay with the anime.
In the end, just show them why you love it so much, mild spoilers is okay when they have so much to look forward to in the long run, although I try not to show them anything beyond Skypeia. Every time I've gotten someone into OP it's when I've shown them some of my favorite fights (Luffy v. Crocodile, Sanji v. Bon Kurei, etc.), and it seems to do the trick ;)
Loved what you saw and want to continue in the manga from where the anime left off? Start reading from page 11 of Chapter 26 though I'd recommended reading it from the beginning. The art alone is more than worth your time.
If you'd like to support the manga's official release in the west, you can preorder both Volumes 1 and 2 on Amazon.
Got rivers of money flowing out of your pockets and want to support the show more directly in the hopes of a second season a couple years down the line? Consider buying the two Japanese BD Boxes Here and Here. No, they don't come with English subtitles unfortunately.
All in all that was a phenomenal finale. Every aspect was wonderfully handled. You could feel the teams' passion not just in this episode, but in the whole project. You could tell they really wanted Made in Abyss to succeed as an anime and I'd say it has.
My wife got me The Fear Agent Library for Father's Day. It's huge and beautiful and really really well produced. Also the story is really great. 500+ pages of pulpy sci-fi. Well worth 35 bucks or whatever it runs for.
Yeah I'll probably focus on finishing My Hero Academia first (or catching up to it at least) and then work my way through other stuff.

Right now the on going debate that I have with myself is that if I want to either buy the individual copies of the manga or if I want to go with the trade version of the manga.

For example:
Get the singles (or the bxo set of singles) https://www.amazon.com/Naruto-Vol-1-Uzumaki/dp/1569319006/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Naruto+Manga&qid=1556685416&s=gateway&sr=8-5
or get the trade like the ones that have 3-4 in this giant ass book
Like this https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/naruto-masashi-kishimoto/1118028884?ean=9781421564753#/
I reckon I want to do the box sets and just do the individual ones instead of buying the trades of them.
Also, if English isn't your native I saw you said Spanish. I'm Mexican myself so you are more than welcome to speak spanish.
When I think of graphic novels, I think of manga. My friend purchased One Piece for my son and he loved them. He did read them by himself on the other hand (he was 8 at the time).
Aside from that, look for some of the classics as graphic novels. Most of Shakespeare and other classic novels are graphic novels and some are very well done and make good connections for kids with concepts that are often out of read in the traditional format.
Not pre-Yeats but also not terribly well known is Brian O'Nolan, also known as Flann O'Brien and Myles na gCopaleen. The Third Policeman is his most famous book.
As for before the 20th century Jeffery Gantz's book Early Irish Myths and Tales is a wonderful selection of Irish folklore. Quite a lot of the intertextual references in Yeats are from folktales.
Then of course there are Swift, Wilde, and Shaw, all of whom are all wonderful.
(laughs) Love it. Manga is definitely an interesting experience. Just a side note, Vol. 1 is free on Amazon Kindle for prime customers! Link ~> https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071DZZWKG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_y.ipDbXSXBZBG

And feel free to stop by /r/Naruto and say Hi, introduce yourself! We hit the front page today and have been getting a ton new readers today. We're trying to welcome everyone in as best we can. I really think you'll enjoy it. I would also suggest watching a couple episodes so you get the vibe for it and understand their cadence.
Please support the Sailor Moon franchise in America by picking up the officially released volumes. pointed glare at comment below
The later printings fix some of the errors, and they have very nice little box sets for cheap. The bindings are gorgeous and the books are sturdy, so there is no reason not to get them. They look amazing on a shelf, too.
ETA: Amazon link to The First 6 Volumes Box Set
I think the manga boxsets are the cheapest.
First 23 volumes for around 117$ USD
The 2nd boxset (24-46 volumes) is coming out this November.
You'll have to buy the individual volumes after the 46th. Yes, they're worth it. :) [+ it's always nice to legally support the series]
This will save you about $100
http://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Box-Set-Baroque/dp/1421560747/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1404627595&sr=8-4&keywords=one+piece
and if you want to save more, you can get all the 3 volume omnibus editions. They go to chapters 28-29-30 (in October, new one comes out every 4 months). That should save you about $180 if you do this rather than individual volumes and that's not including whether you get future omnibuses as well.
http://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-East-Blue-1-2-3/dp/1421536250/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404627805&sr=8-1&keywords=one+piece+1+2+3
I highly recommend it. If you've seen the movie Edge of Tomorrow you know the basic premise of the story. While the premise of the manga remains the same, the storyline is different. Both are great though and I highly recommend reading it. And yes, the omnibus is a two in one, you get both volumes of the series in one book.
Hey OP,
The best and most affordable release of the One Piece manga is the One Piece Box Sets with the first one covering volumes 1-23 of the manga and the second one covering volumes 24-46 of the manga.
Amazon has the first box set up for $98 which is a pretty good deal since MSRP is $185. I'd say get him that first then if he reads through that then go for the second one. The boxsets came out November 2012 and November 2013 respectively so keep that in mind if you want to pace him until the next set comes out.
If you want to get single volumes, I've heard Barnes and Noble have a 2 for 1 on Manga so you could check for that from time to time...
Also, on the anime side of things there are some really great premium boxsets that have been coming out, exclusive to Amazon priced at $89 MSRP with roughly 100 episodes each. The price fluctuates from $60.00 to $90 on Amazon but here's the first, second and third Treasure Chest Boxsets
I think that if he loves the movie that much, the original manga would be a great gift for him. They released some really nice hardcover editions a year or so back.
Here's the first volume stand-alone currently at $21.87 plus shipping.
However, there's also a slipcase of all three volumes for just about double that at $43.41 plus shipping.
The first volume alone is fine depending on what you have available, since most of the stories from it are what were adapted together into the 1995 movie (the stuff that got made into the movie is spread out among more smaller stories rather than one continuous event), so you're not missing out on anything by picking it up alone.
However, the two additional volumes in the slipcase set, Volume 1.5 and Volume 2, have a lot of other really great material in them. 1.5 is the basis for the Stand Alone Complex anime, featuring a more procedural kinda storyline. Volume 2 is... trippy. It gets really deep into the transhuman aspects of the series and follows up much more directly on the stuff in volume 1, but can also get kinda hard to follow depending on how much he might be into the weird kinda philosophical aspects of it.
Hope that helps! But if you're still unsure, you absolutely can't go wrong with getting him the movie. As odd as it might sound, I'd recommend the original DVD release of the movie, since a lot of the newer releases have some odd choices made with adding in some CGI stuff or poor subtitle choices.
It is. It makes no attempts to be a happy story or a traditional victorious plot or ending, and manages this dark and brooding tone that not much fantasy fiction can manage well.
If you're digging into older Weiss and Hickman, a lot of people like the Deathgate Cycle, but the true underappreciated gem is the Rose of the Prophet trilogy. I highly recommend it.
And the whole thing is available in a compendium book!
http://www.amazon.com/Rose-Prophet-Trilogy-Weis-Fiction/dp/1931567433/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1412963172&sr=8-2&keywords=Rose+of+the+Prophet
It's borderline perfect, highly recommend it. The best way to read it are the two library edition volumes that collect 3 arcs each.
The visual metaphors in this chapter are incredibly beautiful, just as the graceful touch she has defining her newfound life and fulfillment are inspiring. Yet the thing I am most pleased to see is the happiness she made for herself.
It feels inappropriate to think of her story as just a heartening tale, as the struggles and obstacles she faces and still contends with are not over, yet they are also not dissimilar to the struggles of life all of us face in our own way. For that similarity, and for her overcoming of them, I am happy too.
Thanks for finishing her report Tetsu-scans! I'm sad to hear they are not planning to translate Nagata Kibi's next published book but maybe we will eventually see it licensed officially like this volume!
Hope your day gets better.
I recommend Attack on Titan on netflix, or if you like reading, there's a Manga!
If you haven't watched Game of Thrones, DEFINITELY watch some of that.
Seek your fortune
All of Codename: Sailor V (two volumes) has been released. Sailor Moon is only on book two of the twelve main story books (with the two additional short stories books on the way as well). Books are being released every other month.

Codename: Sailor V Volume 1: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / Buy.com
Codename: Sailor V Volume 2: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / Buy.com
Barnes and Noble links will also let you check to see if local stores have the books in stock. I'd also suggest checking your local independent bookstores. They really appreciate the business.
All of these links assume that you are in the United States. If you aren't, try your local Amazon retailer.
Here are some fantasy/sci-fi books that I liked at that age, or would have liked had they been published. A couple of them have some sexual content, but nothing overly detailed.
DEFINITELY "The Dark is Rising" series. They're short, but excellent. Also The Hunger Games is a good bet (never read the sequels, but that first book is great). Other suggestions: The Name of the Wind, Waylander, Rose of the Prophet, 1984, To Your Scattered Bodies Go, The Strain, any of the Dragonlance books (I would start at the beginning, with Dragons of Autumn Twilight), or nearly anything by Stephen King.
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness. It's not superheroes, but it's good.
Sunstone is done by an amazing artist with an alright sense of humor, but it's a bit on the erotic side. It started out as a webcoming. It's by a superhero artist, but there are no superheroes in this.
The superhero stuff is generally not great. Decent, but that's about it.
If you're into science fiction thriller, I would recommend Pluto by Naoki Urasawa (20th Century Boys, Monster). It's based off of a story arc from Astro Boy and it's only 8 volumes. Awesome manga :)
And if you like it, you can read Junji Ito's Uzumaki. It's... well good luck!
236 miles!
If I win, this would be nice :3 and if I could be cheeky, if this makes it less than US$15 when combined, perhaps both could be included? :3 Doesn't matter if not of course!
Luckily in the UK you don't have to pay for shipping if it's from Amazon as well!
Well, if you enjoy that one, don't forget [Uzumaki](Uzumaki. Probably his masterpiece.
I was a really big fan of the Fear Agent collection. A little different but really awesome art and story telling. In your price range as well on Amazon
Hey! I like graphic novels to, and might I suggest you look across the aisle and look at some Manga? Death Note is just pure awesomeness (guy gets a notebook that can kill people just by writing their names in it. Some great Chessmaster type plots unfold as master detective L tries to hunt him down).
Black Butler.
Those two series are popular enough that you can easily find them in a well-stocked public library. (Mine has them filed in non-fiction next to the art books for some reason, as well as a few in the youth section... ) Anyway, you should totally give some manga a try!
<Me and the Devil Blues> has a black protagonist, not sure if it's been licensed though. Afro Samurai is a pretty good anime if she's willing to try that out (I don't think anyone's translated the manga). I'd have to get back to you on the college manga, cos all I can think of are high school ones. I think FMA is a really safe bet though, definitely give her that.
I think the popular buys nowadays are Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan though, if you want to try those. Oh, and if she's going to Ireland, The Ancient Magus' Bride takes a lot of mythology from around that area (like Gaelic and Anglo-Saxon).
There are five total seasons - Classic, R, S, SuperS, and StarS.
Stars was not released in America due to licensing and censorship issues, as in the last few episodes there is quite a bit of nudity. If you did not know, there was quite a bit of heavy editing in the American releases - buttcrack lines, Uranus and Neptune's relationship, boob outlines, panty shots - tons of stuff.
Here is the wikipedia page with a synopsis of the season, etc. There is a TON of character development and it wraps up the story quite nicely.
If you haven't read the manga, I highly suggest it. You can get the first six in a nice box set and I believe there's a second set as well. Codename wa Sailor V was released two years ago in English for the first time as well. :D
777?
Five things, huh?
Thing 1
Thing 2
Thing 3 & Thing 3.5 (they are a set)
Thing 4
Thing 5
Edit to say that I'm super jealous that you're going to Asia and that I wish I could go with you, have fun!
Great collection! You should consider picking up Monster Perfect Edition, it's a reprint of Monster, two volumes per edition of this one.
Here you go: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Butler-Vol-Yana-Toboso/dp/0316080845/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367873965&sr=8-1&keywords=black+butler+vol+1
I just checked, and books 1-13 have been released in English, with 14 coming out in July.
Hope I could help! :)
Watched the anime years ago and i plan to buy the manga.
Did you not know, Monster is being re-released? As Monster The Perfect Edition? 2 Volume Omnibus'. With bigger pages. Better quality paper and colour pages.
The first one comes out in a few days. Here it is on Amazon UK if your from the US have a look on your amazon.
The only other things you could be missing re. Sailor Moon media:
Sailor V Series
Codename Sailor V: Vol. 1
Codename Sailor V: Vol. 2
These two detail Sailor Venus' life as the first Sailor Senshi, prior to the events of Sailor Moon. Some of it was actually published prior to Sailor Moon's creation, so, it's kind of fun on that front.
The Short Stories Collection:
Short Stories 1
Short Stories 2
Companion to the Sailor Moon Manga, mostly cute little short stories about the characters :) A couple of them made it into the series as "specials" or in the case of Luna's story, a movie.
For the complete Manga:
Box Set 1
Box Set 2
Other media besides Crystal/Sailor Moon would be the three movies that accompany three of the seasons, Sailor Moon R Promise of the Rose is the only one available for sale right now though. There's one for S and one for SuperS as well.
If you really want to get deep into the media weeds, there are also the Art Books and Material collections :) :D
EDIT: There's also Sailor Moon: another story, the video game for SNES, but that's near impossible to get your hands on...
I love Crystal so far! It's everything I wanted it to be.
My favorite character is Minako/Sailor Venus. Item.
Moon Crystal Power Make Up!
oh well, anyway, a physical english version of the manga doesnt exist yet, Seven Seas Entertainment is working on it and itll be released on the 2nd of january.
you can get it here https://www.amazon.com/Made-Abyss-Vol-Akihito-Tukushi/dp/1626927731/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1506763668&sr=8-2&keywords=Made+In+Abyss
you can feel safe buying it through amazon, its guaranteed and cheap
Ooh, the new unaltered manga from Kodansha is out? Awesome!
Edit 1 - It actually looks like your picture is something different from what I meant: https://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Shell-1-Deluxe/dp/1632364212/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8 /u/Symon_joestar, what version of the manga do you have?
Edit 2 - Figured it out, JBC is a Brazilian manga publisher. http://mangasjbc.com.br/the-ghost-in-the-shell/
Thanks so much! I can't believe I didn't bother searching the next two arcs to see if there was, I feel so dumb.
For anyone else interested - I consider this to be a confirmation that there will in fact be another one.
Looks like I know what my Christmas present will be.
This is the one.
Looks rather simple, but it was a spontaneous buy and I enjoyed the illustrations as well as the information.

It'll be very interesting to see if GitS 2 truly is uncensored for once.
Pluto - I really enjoyed it. It's in the Astroboy World but he is not the main character. It's good for adults and the artwork is very noir and cinematic.

I would definitely recommend Fear Agent. One of my favorite series. You can pick up the first trade for fairly cheap on Amazon.
Otherwise the Library Edition is on sale and you get a ton with it.
I don't know if there is a version like the one you like, but if you are hesitating on reading it on its regular format and you have Amazon Prime, then you could first check the ebook version that it is currently free for prime users and make your decision after reading it.
The Rose of the Prophet trilogy by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman has an Arabian-like setting. I haven't read since I was an adolescent, but I very much enjoyed it at the time.
For Norse sagas, Penguin classics has some fantastic editions:
For eastern mythology, you'll want:
For Celtic mythology:
Yep, it was s Japanese webcomic that the author made into a graphic novel, and that's what just came out in English last year. It's excellent! I found out about it from a queer book club at my local store
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness https://www.amazon.com/dp/1626926034/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_-6DJAbA58N7G9
You'll want to get the newer manga releases by Kodansha. There are 12 volumes which is the same as the original 18 (each volume is a little longer). You can get these in two boxsets:
There are also 2 volumes of short stories:
As well as the prequel manga Codename Sailor V, which has been published for the first time in English alongside these updated releases:
> especially Yōkai.
Yokai Attack!: The Japanese Monster Survival Guide by Hiroko Yoda et al. is a great guide to Yokai: https://amzn.com/480531219X
[Box Set 1 are volumes 1 to 23] (https://www.amazon.de/One-Piece-Box-Set-1/dp/1421560747/ref=sr_1_1?s=books-intl-de&ie=UTF8&qid=1536345488&sr=1-1&keywords=one+piece),

Box Set 3 are volumes 47 to 70
I think you could have just summarized it by saying "Hey from Belgium, where can I buy One Piece manga?".
I believe the most cost effective is through box sets.
Uzumaki is an excellent horror manga, but it might be too intense for her. It's only three volumes, however, so it's pretty affordable to find them in good condition.
All You Need Is Kill is a pretty solid choice. Amazon link
O wow, I didn't know this.
I'm wondering though, how much of a difference is this 1-2-3 from buying them separately as 1, 2 and 3? apart from the price, is there any perks on buying the volumes separately for the early ones?
edit: I just checked, it seems like the 3-in-1 One Piece volumes seem to not be part of the promotional buy 3 get 1 (darn) but some of the others are...
If your willing to try the manga, which is great, Viz is starting a re-release soon.
Hate to be the boy-scout in the room but you could always just buy the omnibus on amazon. They sell them in three-volumes softcover books which comes up to a pretty decent price.
And now for the downvotes...
> i know some websites release the new chapters each week for free,
These are illegal.
You can buy boxsets of the manga volumes which contain 23 volumes for about $100. Boxset 1 and 2 will take you volume 46, after which, you're free to grab individual volumes or just wait for the next boxset. Each volumes sells for about $5. A new volume is released every 3 months. They're available on Amazon.
I would suggest reading the manga the same way you watched the anime, from the beginning. But if you're absolutely intent on skipping around, read impel down/marineford and Water 7/Enies Lobby and then read through Punk Hazard and Dressrosa.
As for easter eggs, you'll have the privelege of reading Oda's question corner in the volumes.
Edit: Boxset 1
and Boxset 2
The next English volume to be released will be Volume 73 on January 6th
339!
One!
Two!
Three!
Four!
Five!
Thank you for the contest!
The thing I want the most from my list at the moment. It also means it's one I'll get myself anyways, sooner or later, so it's not that big of a priority. Just 8 days ago I hadn't even heard of the series. Then /u/toasthaste posted this, and I was impressed enough to check out what's that about, and got hooked.
I think it's Prime eligible, although I don't see the Prime logo under the name of the item.
Also, the official English localization just came out today, so you can buy it if you want to support the author!
https://www.amazon.com/Monster-Vol-Perfect-Naoki-Urasawa/dp/142156906X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549914057&sr=8-1&keywords=Monster+Manga For me was way better than death note.
20 century boys is very good as well, maybe you didnt find the charcaters that has the supernatural wits of the ones in death note. But i assure you that they are way better constructed at the works of Naoki, and both got the conspiracy plot very well constructed.
Is she into Yokai Watch or just yokai in general? If it's just yokai in general this might be a better gift.
How far back do you want to go? Early Irish Myths and Sagas by Jeffrey Gantz has a good collection of several Celtic myths. In my day, it was the go-to primer for starting to learn about early Irish mythology (though it could totally be something else, now. I am not very up-to-date on how this is taught nowadays.)
I got the official Codename Sailor V off Amazon a few weeks back. I'm not sure if the Naoko Punch! strips are included in here, but its worth linking to the real printed versions.

Its around 3months from 1 volumes to an other and there is around 10 chapters per volumes.
If i where you i would buy the two one piece box set. Box 1 and Box 2.
I Recently started my one piece manga collection and bought Vol 1 to 46 and 70 to 78. I'm waiting in hoping for a third box for 47-69 in the next couple years
The first 3 volumes are up for preorder on Amazon (US & UK at least) :)
So I went to check the reviews and found under "customers who bought this also bought".... "My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness"
Fess up, who here did that? That's hilarious.
Just FYI, it's based on this. Don't know how closely though.
https://www.amazon.com/Made-Abyss-Vol-Akihito-Tsukushi/dp/1626927731
Or, like, google "made in abyss manga" and find it, if you're about that sort of thing.
It's available for preorder here, if anyone would like to: https://www.amazon.com/Made-Abyss-Vol-Akihito-Tukushi/dp/1626927731
You appear to like a mystery and not mind manga, so I'd recommend PLUTO by Urasawa
It's only $35 on Amazon at the moment, an absolute bargain!
Dorohedoro 1 and Golden Kamuy 1 and 2 are currently $6
Oh damn, some of the Monster Perfect Editions are $9
Honestly one of my favorite comics and it's the only one of his I've read. I bought this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1616550058/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) hardcover of Fear Agent but I haven't had time to read more than the first issue.

To be honest, the book box sets are a better value for your dollar. The Omnibus volumes tend to have thinner, shittier paper so the volumes aren't as thick but it means that the overall quality is lessened. The only problem with the box sets is you have to wait for all the volumes to be available before you can purchase the set so you will be always behind for collection purposes. Also <100$ for ~25 volumes is a price you won't likely get even with the omnibus.

Do not buy that collection if you cannot read Japaneses!!! There currently is no box set for English yet (at least none I am aware of) so just buy the single volumes from amazon or your local book store. AoT is crazy popular and most book stores will have some in stock.
Examples of what you should buy:
I found that buying them from amazon is the easiest/cheapest way.
There are 4 attack on titans volumes out for now.

They are! I'm from the UK and got this off amazon. Currently the first two box sets are only £85. The second one was £130 only a couple of weeks ago. I snatched this up as soon as I noticed the price drop.
Actually bro All You Need is Kill Omnibus at Amazon is $8.99, which beats RightStuf's price.
There are 5 volume, th 6th one will be on June 4th 2019.
