There are a ton of good anime out there, and a lot that also have good dubs, but I'm going to start with what I think are the best of the best, to avoid overwhelming anyone.

-Cowboy Bebop. This scene is from the movie, not the series, but the series is even better! This masterpiece was not only my favorite anime for over a decade and STILL to this day the #1 gateway anime for the uninitiated, but also the first time I felt like I might be selectively gay. It's not freely watchable online, but that doesn't matter because you should have this one in your collection anyway. Still, here's a decent upload of episode 1. If you want the rest (and you should), do the right thing.

-FLCL has one of my favorite scenes to listen to on full blast. Also known as Fooly Cooly, it's rare to see such a good dub for something so off the wall, but it's a good thing considering it's one of the best ever anime made, dub or not! It's also only 6 episodes long, so you'll be at the end (and starting your second viewing, which you'll need to understand the plot) in no time! They're even available free on Hulu!

-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (don't watch the related videos if you want to avoid spoilers). Not only is it a great series to begin with like everything else I'm listing here, it's also another great gateway series for sci-fi or cop drama fans, just like Cowboy Bebop. Plus, the ENTIRE English dub of the first series is available for free on Manga Entertainment's channel. It's completely legit, they own the license and host some of their shows for free as a courtesy to combat piracy and market their work. When you're done watching that, get hype to know that there's still another full series called 2nd GIG (with an even BETTER intro, R.I.P. Origa) and a movie called Solid State Society.

-Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood. Don't watch the series that isn't labeled "Brotherhood," and when you watch Brotherhood, skip episode 1. Why not? The original series was made before the manga was finished, and it's a totally different story after the first half (they caught up when the manga was still only about 1/4 done). Brotherhood is twice as long, but started airing at the same time the manga was ending, so it follows the original (and much better) story. Since the first 13 episodes or so of Brotherhood basically retell the exact same events as the original series, the makers decided to show off with a totally original first episode which didn't happen in either the manga OR the original series, and it's completely throwaway filler that doesn't service the plot whatsoever. It even spoils some things for any first-time watcher that can pick up on foreshadowing. That's why the best place to start is Brotherhood Episode 2. However, don't let all those stipulations turn you off! The 63 episodes that you will see if you follow my instructions tell an incredible story that everyone can enjoy. This series is the best at gripping you emotionally in a way that's not forced or unwelcome. It has excellent action without defying its own rules, excellent characters without falling back on references and templates, and excellent drama without making you roll your eyes. This is the sort of storytelling that lesser shows only manage to imitate. Unfortunately, it only seems possible to watch up to episode 4 online without Netflix, and Netflix only has most of the series, not the whole thing.

-Last Exile (not "Fam, the Silver Wing", the original). It's not quite as good as Fullmetal Alchemist. In fact, in my opinion this is the weakest of my list, but it still deserves to be on here. Like I said above, this list isn't just good dubs, it's good dubs for anime that were already good to begin with. It gets a bit weird near the end, but the presentation, writing, and drama throughout are among the best. If you don't mind the Little Miss McGuffin, you may even like this one better than the rest, so try it out! Just be prepared for a major shark jump in the last episode. To be fair, that episode also has TWO of the most heartbreaking moments in all of anime, so if you don't mind being incredibly sad, it may be a net gain. It also has one of the most beautiful credits sequences in the entire medium. If you'd like to watch the whole thing freely, FUNimation hosts this series subbed on their channel, but even better, the ENTIRE dub is free on Hulu, no membership required! You do have to sit through a lot more ads than Youtube though.

-Hellsing Ultimate. Holy shit, Hellsing Ultimate. You want METAL? You don't get much more metal than motherfucking Alucard! You want limiter releases? How about multiple levels of limiters to release? How about the first level makes you an indestructible god of battle? Where do you go from there? You want gore? How about half of someone's head getting shaved off cell by cell like it was against a sanding belt? Ready for Being a Badass 101? Note: Hellsing ULTIMATE, not just the old "Hellsing". This is another Fullmetal Alchemist situation.

-Kill La Kill. As LordRaison said (same link), the dub is pretty good in general, with the exception of Senketsu. Senketsu unfortunately sounds like he isn't invested in what's happening at all, totally the opposite of the original. Besides that one problem, it's a good dub, which is more than I can say for Gurren Lagann. Gurren Lagann currently my favorite anime of all time. It's the one that finally unseated Cowboy Bebop after its decade-long reign, but the dub is just awful, and it doesn't make me happy to say it ;_; Definitely watch Gurren Lagann, but watch it subbed. If you need another reason to watch Kill La Kill, listen to this and then realize that that song goes with the character in the video. The dub isn't easily available anywhere online, but the subbed version (which is just as fantastic as Gurren Lagann) is on Netflix and Crunchyroll.

-Spice and Wolf. It's a half romance, half slice of life, half fantasy, half sports anime, if you consider economics a sport. It definitely won't be to everyone's liking, but there are few better waifus in the world than Holo the Wise Wolf. It's not often you get a respectable, distinguished performance from an actress, since the roles they're hired for in this medium are rarely as respectable or distinguished as Holo herself. Of course, there's nothing respectable about being perfect. Holo is no perfect fantasy, cute in every way she's not capable. She's stuck-up, jealous, needy, high-maintenance, and a fiend for alcohol, but also intelligent, confident, compassionate, funny, and adorable. As ultimate proof that it's not just a show about a moe girl, the male lead is a fully developed character himself. Lawrence is naive but charismatic, ambitious yet realistic, manipulative but also generous. If you want an anime that respects both genders without worshiping them, this is it. Are you ready to leave behind your old waifu? Hulu pulls through again, with the entire first season.

-Dragonball Z (the FUNimation dub), obviously. Everyone's either seen it, or will see it eventually, so get on with it.

And of course, Ghost Stories (NSFW). Sorry! I mean Ghost Stories (really NSFW). SHIT, GHOST STORIES (really, REALLY NSFW)! Fuck it, Ghost Stories.

I'm really late replying but I hope still useful! I looked at the series you mentioned your giftee liking and used my knowledge of anime to go on Amazon and pick out 10 other series or movies they might also like, along with why I think these might be a good option. Your person seems to really like edgy and highly dramatic pieces with a scifi or fantasy flair. That's been my favorite for 15 years! A lot of these are a bit older; I am taking the gamble that with as many newer pieces listed, your person hasn't watched a lot of backlog, and therefore may have missed some really good shit.

Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk classic. Older, yes, but for anyone who likes drama and scifi, this is a good choice. It focuses on a classic mind experiment: if you can move your brain freely among cybernetic parts and bodies, what is really "you"?

Steins;Gate is what instantly springs to mind for someone who also likes Psycho Pass. And I mean instantly. Fans of one almost invariably love the other. A tightly-plotted time travel thriller.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is a bit older, often controversial, and an absolute work of art. There's a strong chance your giftee is a girl based on the other series they like, but even if not, Utena is still a solid choice. Just be careful on this; sending it to a conservative person could backfire badly. I rather doubt that is the case with Attack on Titan and Shiki, but just to be safe. It's strange and beautiful...and stylish beyond all doubt.

Black Lagoon is anime's answer to a Hollywood big budget action movie. Comedic, violent, and unforgettable, it deserves a far wider audience than it's had. Almost every anime fan I know who's seen it has loved it.

Akira is without a doubt one of the most famous anime movies to ever be created. Animated without CG in the 1980s, the quality of its hand-drawn special effects has yet to be equalled by almost any other production to this day. For someone used to today's slick computer assisted animation, it's still mindblowing. Akira is often credited with being just as important as Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon in starting the anime boom of the 1990s, and this is a very nice edition.

Also in the classic scifi category we have Serial Experiments Lain, a show whose points on technology and the internet and the singularity still ring true today. Moody and thought-provoking with masterful use of color and a fantastic soundtrack.

Literally no adult-targeted anime is as famous and well-beloved as Cowboy Bebop. This space western with the jazz soundtrack is a perennial favorite on Cartoon Network Adult Swim, is often suspected as a major influence behind Firefly, and is one of the most popular anime in the US of all time... And it's hitting bluray this month.

Summer Wars should probably come with a bluray device as a tech test. It's that beautiful. A tale of virtual reality and the family and friends behind the characters, Summer Wars is an unforgettable movie which, despite being intensely Japanese, deserves a slot on any videophile's shelf.

My total wildcard pick is Mushishi. Beautiful and dream-like, like a series of 25 minute oases from ordinary life. If this is in fact a slice of life, these timeless Japanese almost fairy tales are like no life you've seen. Some call it slow and overhyped. I call it perfection. At any rate, this isn't at all what I'd get as an only gift; it's more a wildcard filler for a $20 other series. If you want my actual top pick.....

Baccano! is my final and top pick. It's really hard to go wrong with this. This rollicking action anime about immortal Prohibition-era Mafiosi in the United States is one of the best and most underrated anime of all time. Humor, violent action, mystery, drama, good characters, good animation, good music... It has them all. It's chronically overshadowed by its more popular sister series Durarara, and that makes me sad. But Durarara isn't easily available outside streaming, and this glorious madcap piece of anime is. Plus it has at least one theme in common with everything your person listed liking. You know what to do.

u/SuperMoonKnight · 8 pointsr/GODZILLA

A few films I would check out:

  • Terror of MechaGodzilla is one of the best Showa films. It has an amazing soundtrack, and has an interesting story and a cool 1v2 battle with Godzilla, MechaGodzilla, and the newcomer, Titanosaurus, who has an amazing roar.

  • Godzilla vs Biollante is one of my favorite as well. Biollante may look like an abomination, but they make the creature seem "beautiful" in a sense, maybe precious is the better word. The story is very good, and the Biollante "suit" is really convincing even to this day. The human characters are interesting as well.

  • Godzilla vs Destoroyah is...really, really good. I wouldn't watch this one first, leave this one as one of the last ones you want to see. Very emotional story, very dark, and not really uplifting in the slightest.

  • GMK All Monsters All-Out Attack: Fantastic film. Godzilla is the villian this time around, while King Ghidorah, typically a villian, is considered a good kaiju. Good effects, a scary Godzilla, and a well paced story.

  • Godzilla 2014: A good film to start off with. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but it's a good start regardless.

  • Godzilla 1954: Obviously

    Films I would avoid:

  • Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla: This film has horrible pacing issues and a story that isn't interesting. While I found SpaceGodzilla interesting in the games, he isn't interesting at all in the film.

  • Godzilla vs the Sea Monster: This movie is just...meh. I sometimes forget it exists.

  • Godzilla vs Megaguirus: Another meh film. Megaguirus is a cool kaiju, but it just doesn't do anything for me.

Films that you should watch with friends for some laughs:

  • Godzilla All Monsters Attack: This film is all over the place. It really feels like a film that had a production team with a motto of "Hey, why not? It's not like we're trying"! It's hilarious on how weird it is.

  • Godzilla 1998: Yeah, this film is basically nothing but the usual 90s cliches we've seen before, now with more Godzilla, sorry, Zilla. Most of the Simpsons cast is in it though, so that's a plus...right?

  • Godzilla Final Wars: I don't think I should say much for this one. The craziest Godzilla film you will ever watch.

  • King Kong vs Godzilla is great for the sole fact it's King Kong vs Godzilla, East vs West. It's not the best in terms of story, but it's cool to see both of them on screen together for the first...and not last...time.

If you need help finding these films, here are some links for some packs on amazon that can fill up your collection pretty quickly.

  • Godzilla Collection (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_6?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-6&keywords=godzilla)

  • The entire Millennium series, with Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2 (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_6?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-6&keywords=godzilla)

  • Some Hensei films, and Mothra films (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Destroyah-Spacegodzilla-Ghidorah-Rebirth/dp/B013P6PEUG/ref=sr_1_12?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-12&keywords=godzilla)

I hope this helped in some way. Have fun watching them. If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask.

EDIT: I should add that Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Megalon are two films that are great to watch with friends as well.

EDIT 2: Heck, watch all the Godzilla films with your friends, each one has something special to enjoy.
u/ReddisaurusRex · 3 pointsr/Parenting

Not all of these are "parenting" books, but they get at various aspects of what you might be looking for/need to help you prepare (in no particular order):

  • Bringing up Bebe - Tells the parenting story of an American expat. living in Paris, and how she observed different parenting techniques between American and French families, and how that plays out in children's behavior. It is a fun "experience" story and I think it lends some interesting insights.

  • Pregnancy, childbirth, and the newborn - I think this is the most informative, neutral, pregnancy book out there. It really tries to present all sides of any issues. I can't recommend this book enough. From here, you could explore the options that best fit your needs (e.g. natural birth, etc.)

  • Taking Charge of Your Fertility - Look into this if you find you are having trouble conceiving, or if you want to conceive right away. Really great tips on monitoring the body to pinpoint the most fertile times and stay healthy before becoming pregnant.

  • The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding - This is published by Le Leche League and really has everything you need to know about breastfeeding, pumping, etc. After baby is born, kellymom.com is a good resource for quickly referring to for breastfeeding questions later, but seriously don't skip this book - it is great!

  • Dr. Spock's Baby and Childcare - Really comprehensive and probably the most widely read book about every aspect of child health and development (and also a lot of what to expect as parents.)

  • NurtureShock - by far the most interesting book I've ever read in my life. Basically sums up research on child development to illuminate how many parents and educators ignore research based evidence on what works well for raising children. If you read nothing else in this book, at least read the sleep chapter!

  • What's Going on in There? - This book was written by a neuroscientist after becoming a mom about brain development from pregnancy through about age 5. It has some of the same research as NurtureShock but goes way more in depth. I found it fascinating, but warning, I could see how it could scare some people with how much detail it goes into (like how many people feel that "What to Expect When Expecting" is scary.)

  • Happiest Baby on the Block - There is a book, but really you can/should just watch the DVD. It has 5 very specific techniques for calming a fussy baby. Here are some recent reddit comments about it. Someday I will buy Dr. Karp a drink - love that man!

  • The Wholesome Baby Food Guide - this book is based on a website which has some of the same information, but the book goes way more in depth about how to introduce food, with particular steps, to set baby up for a lifetime of good (non picky) eating habits.

  • A variety of sleep books, so you can decide which method you might be comfortable with (I believe the Baby Whisperer and Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child are pretty middle of the road, but you can look into bedsharing (The Dr. Sear's books) or the other end (Babywise) as discussed in other comments already here, etc. - these last two links I am letting my personal bias show - sorry, but I just think it is good to know all sides of an issue.)

  • Huffington Post Parents section often has "experience" articles, and browsing subs like this can help with that too.

  • A lot of people love the Bill Cosby Fatherhood book too, but my husband and I haven't read it, so I can't say for sure what is in it, but I imagine it is "experiences" based

  • The Wonder Weeks - describes when and how babies reach developmental milestones, what to expect from those, and how to help your baby with them.

Edit: I wanted to add brief descriptions and links (I was on my phone yesterday when I posted this.) I also added in the last book listed.

I have literally read hundreds of parenting/child dev. books. I consider these to be the best of the best in terms of books that cover each of their respective topics in depth, from almost all perspectives, in as neutral of a way as possible, so that you can then make decisions about which more extreme (I don't mean that in a bad way) parenting styles might work for you and your family (e.g. attachment parenting, natural vs. medicated birth, etc.)

There are many different ways to purchase the anime. While all releases of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT are in their native 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, most English releases of Dragon Ball Z were cropped to 16:9 widescreen.

  • For Dragon Ball, your best option is the Blue Brick DVD sets. [4:3 Native]
  • For Dragon Ball Z, your best option is the most recent Blu-ray set [16:9 Cropped]
  • For Dragon Ball Kai, your best option is most recent Blu-ray/DVD set. If you prefer Kenji Yamamoto's musical score, you want "Parts 1-4" of the Part set. [4:3 Native]
  • For Dragon Ball GT, your best option is the Green Brick DVD set. [4:3 Native]

    Other releases include:

Before I bought my Technics I owned a Stanton STR8 wich handled pretty well for the price. The torque is not on par with proper turntables but you can work with it. In time and with practise you'll know how the drive functions, i.e. how much pressure to apply, torque spin recovery and such. Quick ebay search I saw them go for about 70 dollars used.

I still use mine today for record digging and sampling and it still functions after hundreds of hours.

I really have a bad experience with numark turntables and would advise against them. And they're a terrible eyesore.

Ecler Nuo 2 would be my mixer of choice. Well built, good component, sounds nice, compact and costs about 100 doilla used if you're lucky. Another choice could be a Vestax PMC-05

Remember that cartridges also cost money. I personally use Shure M44-7's and I'd recommend them. The Ortofon Concords are also nice.

That is probably over the budget which is way to low. Trust me vinyl djing is not cheap but it is very rewarding. I like the idea that you want to start on vinyl. Transitioning to cdj's or controllers in the future will be a lot easier rather than then the other way around.

I'd also recommend getting a DVS system or a DVS integrated mixer. There's a lot more creative freedom with that to experiment with different things. You also don't have to spend as much on vinyl.

Don't forget the headphones! Out of budget, again. You can go with something cheaper, just try to get closed and on-ears.

But you're starting to see a trend right? 300 dollars are just not gonna cut it in my opinion. Even if you manage to get everything with that budget it's most likely going to perform really poor which makes everything less enjoyable, and more importantly.... harder. And learning to play vinyl is hard enough to begin with.

And I'm not saying go drop 2 grand on industry standard gear. Just... you know maybe save up to like 6-700 maybe. just so everything functions nice and well. Buy used gear, do research, practise practise practise and have fun :)

PS. This helped me out a lot when I was starting, and is very good information and lessons on turntablism. It also goes over basic turntable setup, i.e. arm adjustments, need and cartridge maintainance etc

Here goes! It looks like I got all but 1 item from my current wishlist. Yah!

1.) Something that is grey.

2.) Something reminiscent of rain. Why not a raincoat?

3.) Something food related that is unusual. These are from Japan and Matcha flavor is hard to find in the US!

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. (Yes, pets count!) For my son! He's a nugget.

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! Guy Gavriel Kay is an amazing writer and I think everyone should read his books. They evoke so many emotions!

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! How about free? Read the classics!

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...) NO.

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. I think by definition art is not useful, but very beautiful!

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Because Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion are amazing.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. For stabbing. It's a silent weapon, which is best. You don't want to attract more of the undead.

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. My current goal is to be more active as I try to lose weight, but foot pain is a big barrier to walking/exercising more. I have heard awesome things about this foot wrap and it would be a huge help and keep me from being in pain as I exercise!

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. It's hard to find in stores now, weirdly. And it's all I wear daily!

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? PS4!

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. EDIT A bread box is typically similar in size to a microwave. Home. Made. Cappucino. It can go right next to the breadbox.

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. This is pocket sized!

16.) Something that smells wonderful. Apples!!

17.) A (SFW) toy. She-Ra is pretty safe for work

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school. If you're in college, you're gonna need one of these.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. Adventure Time! Come on, grab your friends!

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand. What's mrore amazing than being INSANELY comfortable? Just look at it! Get inspired to sleep. It looks so comfy, I can't handle it.

Someone recently asked if Dragon Ball would ever make it to Bluray. To quote /u/VegettoEX:

>Asked often, but no real updates. For an actual HD release, someone would need to pony up and scan film masters. Right now, that would have to be Toei; FUNimation's current masters are digibeta tapes at best.
I mean, they could do an upscaled release to Blu-ray, but that'd be a lot more trouble than it's worth with their current materials, and if they crop anything else... (insert fist-shaking here)
I would honestly expect to see something from Toei on Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT in HD before I would expect to see it from FUNimation.

That being said, our FAQ in the sidebar has a list of your options when it comes to purchasing the series.

>##Q: What is the best way to purchase the anime?
A: There are many different ways to purchase the anime. While all releases of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT are in their native 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, most English releases of Dragon Ball Z were cropped to 16:9 widescreen.

  • For Dragon Ball GT, your best option is the Green Brick DVD set. [4:3 Native]

The closest to the "originals" would be the Dragon Box set, but that's going to run you a ton of money on eBay. Here is a list of choices for you.

  • For Dragon Ball, your best option is the Blue Brick DVD sets. [4:3 Native]
  • For Dragon Ball Z, your best option is the most recent Bluray set. [16:9 Cropped]
  • For Dragon Ball Z Kai, your best option is most recent Bluray/DVD set. If you prefer Kenji Yamamoto's musical score, you want "Parts 1-4" of the Part set. [4:3 Native]

As for whether Kai is good or not, I prefer it to the original. The pacing is great, and the English dub is much better in terms of acting and script accuracy, though there's some censorship in the first few episodes, and the redrawn scenes look off.
u/TyroKith · 5 pointsr/dbz

There's only one way that I know of to buy pre-Z Dragon Ball uncut and in its entirety. You'll want to pick yourself up the Blue Bricks. The quality isn't terrible compared to the Orange Bricks. Don't forget about the movies.

For Z, you'll definitely want to avoid the Orange Bricks. The only good thing about this release is that it finally made Dragon Ball Z easy to buy without collecting endless DVDs. But the picture is botched up beyond being saved, and it's cropped to widescreen. Ideally you'd want to purchase the Dragon Boxes, but they're out-of-print and cost a pretty penny. Maybe check eBay if you're interested. You're probably going to want to go with the latest Blu-Ray releases. They're still cropped like the Orange Bricks, but they're a superior overall product even if they still aren't up to par with what we should be getting. Pick up the movies and Battle of Gods too.

GT is pretty simple. Buy the Green Brick. Like the pre-Z Blue Brick, the "remastering" didn't destroy the integrity of the product. It also comes with the one GT TV special. Yay!

And if you're interested in what order you should watch all this, check out our guide.

Harrison's dvd will still be good for you. I feel he does a good experience in explaining how he plays and his breakdowns of complicated Porcupine Tree stuff, which really help you get an idea of good ways to play polyrythms, independence, and just some great playing.

But if you're really looking for technique sorts of things, I always recommend Thomas Lang - Creative Coordination and Jojo Mayer - Secrets of the Modern Drummer for feet and hands, respectively.

They are both highly acclaimed due to their fantastic presentation and production value, along with two of the great modern masters imparting valuable knowledge to whomever takes the time to learn it!

u/PhysicallyTheGrapist · 5 pointsr/drums

Rudiments are a good place to start learning drums, as well as some notation / music theory. Here's some free websites that I use:

http://vicfirth.com/40-essential-rudiments/

http://www.snarescience.com/index.php

Around here, every one recommends Stick Control and Jojo Mayer's Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer DVD, but I have never used them.

Music wise, I'm sure there's something you like that is approachable. A lot of Alt-rock like The Strokes, the White Stripes, Black Keys has pretty straightforward drum parts.

As for lessons, it isn't a bad idea to take even just a month of lessons to assist you in basic hand / foot technique as well as musical notation.

Good luck on your drumming journey!

u/Radioactive24 · 3 pointsr/vinyl

> You literally just calculated the cost of only the LP's.

Which is about 25% of the worth of the sets, yes. And, pretty much, the reason we have this thread in /r/vinyl right now.

> I'm not saying it's not a great value, but they are running much less in quantity than other runs of anything similar.

There's not a hard limit. They have said that there is a minimum, that they would only put things to the presses if they had at least 1,000 people who wanted to buy it. There could be 2,000, there could be 5,000. There's no cap or limit, just a minimum.

> This is the primary reason why Anime in Japan, Blu-Ray releases there, are significantly more expensive, because they run a LOT less DVD/Blu-Ray, they also recoup losses because they don't get as much on TV, and they have higher licensing costs.

This is a 20 year old series that has seen how many different runs on international cable and streaming, is critically acclaimed, and has paid for itself multiple times over. To act like Sunrise/Funimation/whoever else is somehow comign at this from a standpoint of loss is fucking laughable.

> You could expect to see about 1.5 hours of sound maximum on 2 LP's and they would likely be doing a sort of greatest hits style compilation.

Yeah, no. You, at most, can fit about 22-24 minutes of music per side of a 12" LP. If they were going to an hour and a half, you'd be look at at least 3xLP, depending on the specific layout of the tracklisting, which is still maybe another $7+/copy. They've specified a 2xLP, so it's definitely not that long.

> This is a cheap crappy box compared to what you would be getting in the one included

They specified Digipak, who is notorious for shit quality packaging and done en masse, on the cheap. Most likely, it'll be a dressed up version similar to this blu-ray set, which is even cheaper than the DVD one you linked to, which is also gouged up by a secondary seller, independent of Amazon or Funimation.

> They probably have significantly higher profit margins as a goal on top of all this extra overhead, so that will be [over-represented] on a per sale basis especially as smaller scale.

Okay, so their being dicks. Got it. Pretty sure everyone agrees on that front.

> This is an example artbook.... [s]o you go from 36 dollars to reasonably 50 or maybe even more at this point. That's not far fetched.

As for your art book argument, there are much cheaper ones, still hardback, with more pages, for even less price, even by people who still had to license the materials (Dark Horse isn't owned by Nintendo, last I heard). A good window to offer would be from $25 to $45, depending on details in production and where it's made.

Also, sucks about the wait, but yeah, you pre-ordered an art book. Congrats. Did it have a release date? Because either it didn't, you preo-ordered, and then got a release date that's months out or it had a release date announced, you preordered, and the date still hasn't come yet. Either way, yeah, that's how pre-ordering works? I've waited over a year for things like The Protomen's Act II vinyl release, which hit all sorts of snags with the pressing of the album.

> The Lithographs, mass produced, could typically be sold under 10 dollars, but if they are only a limited run, again that's probably closer to 25-30 dollars because the machine time, labor, and overhead from indirect labor is being represented in the price 100 to 1000 times more than something typical like this if it's comparing a 1,000 run versus a 100,000 or 1,000,000 part run.

At least we can somewhat agree on this part. But, at the same point, the lithographs all look the same in the sets, the only difference being what colored paper they're printed on. So, since you can reuse the same plates, it's not as expensive if each set had exclusive prints.

> They should have made one boxset collectors edition to consolidate it (screw the bookends wtf)

Agreed on that front too. PVC and resin books ends retail for $30-$40 books too.

I already did pretty much a full price breakdown over on /r/anime, so thanks for reiterating what I said, at great length, but then just proving me right?

Also, thanks for linking to that terrible graph that has absolutely 0 context attached to it. Really made me understand business more than I already did.

I love movies because...

So, the reason i want these is because me and my sisters used to watch them all the time and it was one of the only times we got along and had a lot of fun. It brings such good memories and we always have fun when we watch them!

Phantom opera

Robin hood men in tights

The Princess Bride

Monty python and the holy grail

(note: Regular DVD of any of those are fine, i just saw the blueray first)

Me and my mom LOVE godzilla so this would be perfect!

And these are som of my favorite movies of all time!
Moulin Rouge

Lord of the rings box set (Im looking at the used version)

And this because i havent seen it and people say its great!

Again, feel free to choose which come in bluray and which you want to get DVD, im not picky!

Thanks again and sorry if me posting a lot of them causes a problem :D

First: your best starting bet would be to pick up this Showa Series Godzilla Collection as it is the best in terms of actual movies you can't get anywhere else.

Second: I'd move on to get THIS 'G' SET (used if possible to cut down the price). The reason behind getting this particular set is that it includes both "Son of Godzilla" and "G VS. MechaGodzilla" these 2 movies are extremely rare and expensive by themselves and will end up costing you more in the long run.

Third: The Heisei Series is out there and available as dual sided discs. However, "G'85" and "G vs. Biollante" have never been released in the US (assuming you are from here?). I just ordered the entire Heisei Series from Japan and converted the DVDs to Region 1. They all play great just so long as you don't mind subtitles.

Forth: All of Millennium Series is extremely easy to find and they're all pretty cheap. What you'll have the hardest time finishing is all the Showa stuff... "VS. Hedorah", "VS. Sea Monster", "VS. Gigan" are very rare and expensive... I'd hold off as long as you can with these and just check Amazon or Ebay frequently to find a good deal (which you probably won't). Personally I got down to these last few and just bit the bullet. I think I probably paid close to or around $30 for each just to complete my collection. Also, "VS. Megalon" is being released for the 1st time on DVD/BD in a couple of weeks! don't forget to pick that baby up! it's the last one I need to finish out my entire collection!

That said... with the hype surrounding Legendary's new 2014 60th anniversary remake, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you saw a sudden resurgence in Godzilla rereleases. I'm willing to bet that if you're patient enough you MIGHT be able to get some of these harder to find titles that way.

As for your your original question about there being one big boxset? yes, it's a Japan exclusive and is about $1000 US dollars. HOPE THAT HELPS!

Spirited Away!

I want it because I haven't seen it in years and would love to watch it whenever I want to! I used to have it on VHS but then the only TV we had with a built in VHS player broke so I donated all my VHS's. I love Studio Ghibli movies so much!

Paprika. I have never seen this movie before but it looks like something I would enjoy. I love anime!

I love movies because...they take you to another world :)

Thanks for the contest!

Manga Entertainment's release of the 'digitally remastered' sets, known as the Orange Bricks, both contain the Bruce Faulconer score and Shunsuke Kikuchi score. Audio is English+Kikuchi score, Japanese+Kikuchi score, and English+Faulconer score. Bare in mind this isn't the best release of Dragon Ball Z you can buy on the market. Quite honestly, I would invest the money into the blu-ray sets.

Lots of good advice here, but there is ONE THING that saved our lives when my daughter was in this stage. It's this video: https://www.amazon.com/Happiest-Baby-Block-Harvey-Karp/dp/B0088Y6C0W

Watch him take exhausted parents and see the insane amazement on their faces as he takes their fussy babies and makes them calm, then fall asleep. As a dad, it's incredibly gratifying to be able to take your fussy child and calm him or her down in 5 minutes or less.

I was able to use the side/swinging technique to put her to sleep all the way up to around 12 months. I'm telling you, this method is a lifesaver. It was magical for mom, too -- I had primary baby-calming duties, and I could easily put her to sleep.

Bonus picture: me brushing my teeth with swaddled, calm munchkin, age ~3 months. Common sight in my house at the time. =)

>I have not watched the series in some time and i wanted to get some physical copies and add them to my collection. This way i can rewatch the series, and have them for later on. Im wondering what version's to get.

  • For Dragon Ball, your best option is the Blue Brick DVD sets.
  • For Dragon Ball Z, your best option is the most recent Blu-ray set
  • For Dragon Ball Kai, your best option is most recent Blu-ray/DVD set.
  • For Dragon Ball GT, your best option is the Green Brick DVD set.

    >There seem to be two right now which is dragon ball z and dragon ball kai. Im guessing DBZ would be what i remember as a child so would it be the safe choice if i were only to get one version.

    Correct.

Dragon Ball Z Kai is Dragon Ball Z with most of the episode padding and filler content (scenes not present in the original comic book) removed. Kai has a much more faithful-to-the-Japanese English dub than Z does, and as a result, it is often recommended for new viewers who do not wish to watch the series subtitled.

The Majin Buu arc of Dragon Ball Kai has yet to be released outside of Japan. Because of this, if you choose to watch Kai in English, you will need to switch to episode 200 of Dragon Ball Z after finishing episode 98.

While Kai was heavily censored for American television, it is available uncut on DVD and Blu-ray, though unfortunately, the first few episodes remain censored for content on all mediums.

    >Also i never really minded any of the DBZ "filler", it was actually enjoyable vs some other anime i watched.... NARUTO! Another thing im wondering is are the Blu-ray's uncut version's or not?

    The Blu-rays are uncut.

If you'd prefer the full "90s US experience", get the Rock the Dragon box set, which features the Ocean dub. This dub only spans the first 53 episodes; once you've finished watching them, continue the rest of the series from Season 2 of the Blu-ray season sets, starting at Episode 68. If you want the US replacement score, make sure to select the alternate audio track with the US replacement score by Bruce Faulconer.

    >Also another thing im wonder, i have not watched GT or DBZ super. Im wondering are they considered Cannon?

There is no officially defined canon, so it all depends on what you want to accept. Dragon Ball GT had next to no involvement from the author of Dragon Ball, so most people discount it. At the moment, it seems that Super is how the franchise is going to continue; whether or not you consider any of this "canon" or not is up to you.

Long(ish) time drummer here. When I was in high school, I took lessons from an amazing teacher who completely reworked my playing style. He always stressed the fundamentals over everything else. A lot of what he emphasized can be found in this DVD. I would highly recommend you pick this up and watch it before you do anything that involves a drumset, as having solid mechanics will vastly improve your ability to coordinate your various limbs and bust out some serious drummage. Practice hand technique on a rubber practice pad before you actually start on set. Once you get the mechanics down, go out and practice drum set coordination with rock band or a real kit. The best you can do is to find a group of musicbros and start a band. Jamming with others and listening to recordings of yourself will help you improve immensely. On top of this, don't forget to listen to your favorite drummers and rip off their shit. The FBI won't taze you for appropriating other people's cool sounding licks, so don't be afraid to do so. Above all, practice a lot. You get out what you put in, so put in a lot for best results.

I have a few references for you to look at.

First of all, check out The Magic of Reality, it's Dawkins' new book, aimed at the younger set and is way cool.

Secondly, definitely watch Cosmos! I think that has the kind of appeal and general sense of wonder that you're looking to express. It is widely available for free should you know where to look. The library, for example.

As a science-oriented young girl, I liked Zoom! a lot. That's going to be a little harder to find, but it was really, really cool.

I wish you a lot of luck! I will ask my mother (a 3rd, 4th, and now 1st grade teacher) what her kids find the most engaging for science workshops. If you are anywhere near the NYC area, the Liberty Science Center would be a great hands-on resource.

Amazon all the way. With the exception of 2014. I got that on Black Friday at Best Buy for $4. Just be on a look out for the [Kraken blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-Gigan-Blu-ray/dp/B00I462XLG/ref=pd_sim_74_7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Q4NXP3Z44W4ZJK6AP4P4) and [The Toho Godzilla Movies Collection blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-King-Ghidorah-Mothra/dp/B00IQAUO2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481679727&sr=8-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+king+ghidorah+blu+ray). The prices seem to jump to higher and lower over time. It's very inconsistent, so I just checked every other day to get the best deals. Lowest they normally around for is little over $7.

For [The Godzilla Collection] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481679933&sr=1-1&keywords=the+godzilla+collection) I got it used at half price, BUT IT'S ON SALE RIGHT NOW FOR PRIME USERS, SO PICK IT UP.

Godzilla 1998 and 2014 are always cheap. Even without the Black Friday deal, it's still cheap on Amazon.

Godzilla vs. Biollante is tricky. There are multiple sources on Amazon. Make sure you get it from [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Biollante-Blu-ray-Koji-Takahashi/dp/B00LVZK1LG/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481680064&sr=1-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+biollante+blu+ray). Cheap as hell.

Then there's Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. These two are extremely hard to come by, but the way I see it, here are your options:

  1. Pay for the official Japanes blu-rays (expensive)
  2. Pay for the official American distributed DVD's (expensive)
  3. Bootlegs, which is what I went with. Either get it from sumogorilla.com or showavideo.com. I went with sumogorilla, but what you should know is that only DVD's are sold here and they are all in Japanese dub with English subtitles. But from what I hear, showavideo has blu-rays with better quality, however, they cost a little bit more and in order to even view the website, you need to be a member. Sign-up is free, but you can only do so on the last day of a month and the first day of a month. Both websites are reliable.

Last but not least is King Kong vs. Godzilla. Now you can get the official blu-ray on Amazon for a cheap price, but mind you, this doesn't have the Japanese dub, only the English dub. It is for this reason that I purchased it from sumogorilla, seeing as I only intend to watch them in Japanese.

Well, there you have it. Hopefully this will help you on your journey in collecting every Godzilla movie out there. But I'm sure there are other methods of doing so as well, so keep an eye out for any tips and information! As time passes, the prices and sources will as well. But this is how I collected the films.

    Good luck!

    EDIT: Typing error.

They talk about that scene, and how apparently 1 of them had to get cuticle repair after their fingers were jabbed during a reshoot of the scene, and how Bishop's actor barely got through the English version of TSA with the knives in his suitcase, etc.

On top of that, this film looks quite good in Blu Ray. And it has the 1990 special edition, which is good, as I consider that version superior to the 1986 theatrical release (I like that the deleted scene makes the leading character in Alien: Isolation canon, for one thing). And a few versions of the soundtrack.

I specifically picked a Blu Ray set which didn't have Prometheus / Covenant as I have zero interest in those films. Plus the version I got is half the price and has more special content than the more expensive version.

The 4 film version has all the same special content as the 9 disk DVD version but in Blu Ray disks, so better resolution. The 6 disk version is twice the price of the normal 4 disk version which lacks some special features. At $15 vs $30, I think the $15 is worth it since I buy movies for special content anyway.

Version with prometheus / covenant:

Version with only the 4 original movies but tons of special content:

Recently bought the Alien quadrilogy to watch. This Image will give you all the movies along with the special and theatrical editions. It has a mode in the special editions that shows which scenes are extra compared to the theatrical releases. I bought mine from bestbuy for $10 which I though was a great deal considering it was all of the Alien movies (except Prometheus) in HD.

This image should get you all the movies along with the special features. What you want to look for in the descriptions is disc 5 and 6. The whole set works like a uh..set in each of the individual movies there is a mode that you can tag the special features you want to watch and when you insert disc 6 it will bring all of your tagged special features to the front. They essenstially took disc 5 and 6 out of the set and sold that as a seperate version.

Both of the quadrilogy Blu rays have the same movies, features, and interface. The first one is just missing disc 5 and 6 with all of the extra special features. Hope that helps.

EDIT: This is the amazon page.Depending on which one your looking to buy you can change the multi-format from October 2010 to October 2014 for the different versions. 2010 being the Anthology with discs 5 and 6, 2014 being the Quadrilogy with only 4 discs.

HAPPY CAKE DAY!!!

I have a ton of favorite songs, but for some reason, Concrete and Clay is sticking out right now. The song is simple, but the composition is just so tight with all the diverse instrumentation and harmonies. Also, it's in Rushmore.

So Sam goes to his doctor one morning, and after a routine checkup, he sits down to have a serious checkup.

"You know," said Sam, "I've been really thinking, and I think I want to be castrated."

"What!?" exclaimed his doctor. "Are you sure? I mean this is a very serious issue and-"

"I know," Steve said, cutting his doctor off. "I thought about it a very long time, and I know I need to do it. You can't, CANT talk me out of it."

The doctor doesn't fight any more, after all, it's Sam's life. So an appointment is scheduled for soon after, and Sam is casturated. The surgery is a success, but Sam recovers in the hospital. He begins to walk again, although now he walks a bit funny. Down the hall in the hospital, he sees another man, walking the exact same way.

"So," said Sam to the another man "looks like you had the same operation as me. What made you do it?"

"Well," replied the man, "After twenty years, I decided I couldn't go without it anymore, and I just needed to be circumcised.

Sam stared blankly at the other man, and then suddenly screamed in horror "Shit! That's the word!!"

If you want to to give your friend a taste, direct him to the Sagan Series, specifically, part 3: A reassuring Fable.

Well this year in anime has had some surprises and disappointments. This was my first year of watching seasonal anime (winter 2015). The anime that had the most impact on me and made into my top 10 was the 2nd season of JJBA: SDC. My friend got me into it and I was skeptical at first but I ended up loving.

In general this year I became more enriched in anime and I've watched more anime this year than other form of entertainment in my life. I don't what I would be doing without anime if I hadn't discovered it (probably just still playing video games) but I wouldn't have had the influence of anime today. I've been learning Japanese since my 2nd year of high school (because it's offered there) so it has also greatly influenced my intake of anime.

As for what I would want I would like either Steins; Gate Blu-ray, Cowboy Bebop Blu-ray, or basically any quality wall scrolls for the Fate Series or Kara no Kyoukai Series like this, this, or [this.]

Any questions? Okay, well, this isn't directly related to astrophysics but it is something you'd be more in a position to answer than most, and something I've been wondering about for many years.

The original Cosmos was a TV broadcast, and the latest and best iteration made available to the public is the DVD set from 2002. The quality of that set is poorer than it needed to be, because no effort was made to remaster the tapes the episodes were sourced from, despite the black borders and composite artifacts typical of those days.

Today we could, and almost certainly would do so much better. The programs exist as two different elements: Video recordings and film recordings. The video can be cleaned of its composite artifacts, and the rest, being film, could actually be re-scanned as high-definition, enabling Cosmos to be seen in a much more pristine iteration, and even, in parts, HD.

I can't think of a more deserving program, and it would help bring that venerable series up to visual parity with your superb followup. Do you suppose this will ever become a possibility?

Thank you for reading and of course for your invaluable contributions to science awareness.

I think this and this are a great way to get your collection started. If you are looking to do Blu-Ray these double feature bundles are good too. Then just hunt down the rest. This one has a lot of the earlier ones. I've purchased individually because the sets weren't always around, I'm thinking of upgrading to blu-ray but i still love running across the ones I'm missing in places like thrift shops. Anyways. Good luck.

Today I broke my dresser by attempting to use it as a step stool to get to the top shelves in my closet. Why was I using my dresser as a step stool? Because I couldn't afford a step stool :| Which means now I get to buy a new dresser, and until then the drawers are just stacked up in the back of my closet.

So, as much as I hate my most useful gift being a gift card, a gift card would really really help put a dent into the $60+ I'll need to spend on a dresser soon.

A real, actual item that I think is very interesting (and entertaining!) is The Princess Bride <3 And for a useful item, this silicone brownie mold solves the problem of who gets the edges and whose piece is bigger :-D

>This topic is addressed in our FAQ. See the link for more details about the different dub versions and soundtracks.

>The Funimation Z dub has all 291 episodes. The Kai dub has 167 (and it still has filler left over from the Z anime). The Saban/Ocean dub of the first 67 episodes was abridged to 53 episodes. Funimation restored and re-recorded those episodes and that's what you get on all modern home releases of Z.

There are many different ways to purchase the anime. While all releases of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT are in their native 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, most English releases of Dragon Ball Z were cropped to 16:9 widescreen. All home releases except for the "Dragon Box" and "Rock the Dragon" sets offer three soundtrack options: Japanese with original soundtrack, English dub with original soundtrack, and English dub with Funimation's replacement soundtrack. (There is no Funimation soundtrack for Kai or Super.)

  • The Dragon Ball Z Orange Brick DVD set [16:9 Cropped], which are criticized for their aggressive filtering, over-contrasted colors, automated center crop, and excessive detail loss during scenes with shaky picture.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box set [4:3 Native], the now-out-of-print collector's edition which is considered by many to be the best DVD set of the series. Unfortunately, they run around $700 for a complete set on eBay, and don't include the American broadcast soundtrack.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Blu-ray Level Sets [4:3 Native], the now-cancelled Blu-ray set which was praised for its faithful colors, grain preservation and original 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • The Dragon Ball Z "Rock The Dragon" set [4:3 Native], which contains all 53 episodes of the original Ocean Group dub.

If you prefer a stream, you can watch the series on several online services including FUNimation. Streams are available subbed or dubbed, but both versions will feature the original Japanese soundtrack.

The Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey blu-ray was $19.99 as well when I looked this morning, but it was back up to $35.60 tonight when I checked back. I chatted with Amazon Customer Service and they agreed to honor the $19.99 price from earlier in the day. I'm pretty excited about that :D I have the original Cosmos DVDs from Carl Sagan so happy to add the NDT version to my collection!

Edit: I think it was a fluke that the blu-ray price dropped so low for about 5 hours today.

Yes the cat sound is different too.

The originals I have on dvd look like this...
I am pretty certain these are what was originally broadcast on adult swim back in the day.

The Blu-ray set I have is an updated reissue of the remix dvds that look like this... or this...

I'm glad I'm not just crazy and am not the only one that this bothers. If you want the old broadcast versions, hunt down the first dvds I linked.

Even though I have the series on blu-ray, I will never get rid of those for this very reason. Also because it was the first anime on dvd I ever purchased (sentimental value, to the max).

edit- All these I listed are American releases.

I concur with the second point. If you can't afford to at the moment but you end up really enjoying the series, i suggest buying the blu-ray of BSG which has a plethora of additional content. It's super worth it. This is the one i bought (and also one of the cheapest, but it's very good quality).

My choices would have to be Spirited Away. This is the first anime movie that I convinced my girlfriend to watch, and she enjoyed it although she isn't an anime watcher. The second would have to be Titanic because it is the first classic emotional movie that I shared with my girlfriend, and she cried like a baby :p. I love movies because they bring people together to share a common interest or even make new ones.

As mentioned by /u/hereisatoptip , Prometheus, Avatar and LOTR are positively stuffed with goodies. The Alien Anthology and Star Wars complete saga box sets are amazing, although navigating the bonus material in both is a bit of a PITA. The Star Trek 'classic films' box set actually included some great bonus features, even though the remasters of the films themselves left a bit to be desired. Also, the Blade Runner five-disc Collector's Edition has pretty much everything a BR fanatic could want, including the original workprint and the tremendous 'Strange Days' documentary.

First and foremost, just play with it. Noodle about and have some fun! I did this for quite some time with 1 scratch record and then bought Qbert's Do it yourself DVD. I can't recommend it enough, really cool. Yoy can switch between a few different camera angles at any point (eg. overhead, zoomed in on fader hand, record hand etc). Loads of cool extras as well as the scratch techniques too . And it's not boring, Qberts a bit of a nutter so you will be laughing...

Happiest Baby on The Block.

Seriously could not give it a higher recommendation. Dad of a fussy newborn (5 weeks). It saved my sanity.

Here's a quick YouTube preview: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mm3aJ78TXak

But you HAVE to get the Amazon Instant video if you watch the YouTube and want more details. https://www.amazon.com/Happiest-Baby-Block-Harvey-Karp/dp/B0088Y6C0W

Also. Get a halo sleeper sack. Way easier than swaddling and it holds all night.

Also swear by the fisher price rock and play. Only pediatrician approved device for a baby to sleep in that moves (vs vibrate) and it's only $60.

Combine that with a wubbanub, some gripe water and this YouTube link played LOUDLY close to him/her - you'll find the "off switch" too. :)

As I mentioned to my co-worker, it's good to find a teacher who you can meet with semi-regularly (even if it's only once a month)... mainly so you don't form any habits detrimental to your progress. Young students (pre-teen beginners) generally need to meet with a teacher once a week or so because it holds them accountable for practicing on their own time. As an adult student, less frequent meetings are possible because you're pretty much only accountable to yourself. It's your money and your work on your own will determine your progress.

However, if financial restrictions didn't allow you to have any meetings with a teacher at all... YouTube is an incredibly rich resource and learning tool, as are DVDs like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Weapons-Modern-Drummer-DVD/dp/B000S6TNLI

Battlestar Galactica (reimagined series) is on Hulu USA at the moment. I'd summarize it as LIKE enterprise - as in trying to be more realistic - but it goes way more back, generally, in tech but it still has some really high tech as well.

It's the best piece of cinema and acting I've ever seen.

Make sure you see the remastered 16x9 version and if you like that, pick up the blu rays for cheap

https://www.amazon.com/Battlestar-Galactica-Complete-Blu-ray-Packaging/dp/B0027UY8B8 (region free)

The USA version may not be the remastered 16x9 version, plus, it's 3x the cost.

u/damien6 · 2 pointsr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

Yeah, you definitely want a direct drive turntable. I found a Technics 1200 in brand new condition for like $250, so that's what I am going to learn on (one of these days).

You also want to get a new cartridge and needle specifically designed for scratching. I just picked up and Ortofon Concorde Pro S, but there are a lot out there to choose from.

As far as a mixer, it's necessary that you pick up one with a steep slider slope. As you drag the slider from left to right, or right to left, a slow slope will slowly fade from one turntable to the other (or just get quieter and eventually silent). A steep slope means it will just cut the sound completely with a very slight move of the mixer (if that doesn't make sense let me know and I'll try to describe it better).

The problem with cheaper mixers is that the sliders tend to wear out quickly and are very expensive to replace, so it's definitely worth getting into a good mixer to begin with. I don't really have any suggestions because that's what I'm looking at now.

As far as learning, DJ Qbert has amazing DVD series called Do It Yourself Skratching where he covers all the techniques. A few of the lessons are on Youtube.

Oh, edit. you'll want to get Qbert's Butter Rugs and he has some amazing battle records released through his Thud Rumble company, too.

Seeing this picture makes me wonder if you've seen the movie or read the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block".

When I watched the movie, I was skeptical about the results (of using the methods). I can honestly say that 9 out of 10 times, works like a charm. And if my baby girl won't go to sleep, it's because she needs a bit more of one thing or another (fed, changed, burped) and is easily resolved.

I swear it's a new mom life saver! :)

u/AzraelNewtype · 1 pointr/thegrandtour

Yeah, it turns out my TV had it right up front, rather than the standard version. I wanted to add it to my watchlist from the computer, but since it was featured it didn't matter much. In fact, being on a HDR capable set had everything from Amazon defaulting to the UHD bannered versions. In case you haven't tried fighting this yourself though, observe:

https://www.amazon.com/Man-High-Castle-Season/dp/B00RSGIVVO
vs
https://www.amazon.com/Man-High-Castle-Season-Ultra/dp/B00RZYUJN2

It makes it annoying to do list manipulation on something with a keyboard, but technically doable since the apps know what you can do and pick for you.

Anyway, yes, this show does look amazing in the full HDR glory.

  • Since answer number one is wine, and that sounds the same as whine, here is my related item. Many friends and family can attest to the fact that when I am whiny and grumpy, I am nearly always grumbling and pouting over a cup of tea. And what does tea go into? Mugs! Since I am a a Slytherin, I do believe these green and black mugs are quite befitting of me.

  • Riddle number two is broom, of course. What is a frequent (at least in the movies) activity done when using a broom? Why pretending it is a microphone of course, while you sing and dance (cough I mean clean cough)! How can you listen to someone singing without going to their concert? By buying their music! But wait, you would probably need headphones to listen to the music you bought, right? Well, I have you covered!

  • The answer to the third is a hat! Hats are quite lovely, very stylish, you know. Who is stylish? Why royalty, silly! (Well, sometimes). What does royalty like? Pocket watches! And what a fabulous watch this is.

  • The fourth riddle is a book. Books are like being another person. Conmen pretend to be other people. That is a crime. Committing crimes makes you go to jail. Jail makes you buff. When you gain a lot of muscle, you have to buy new clothes. Clothes like this.

  • The final official riddle is a trunk. Trunks fit everything, and take them to different places. What other household items can fit a lot of things and transport them? Wardrobes, particularly wardrobes that lead to Narnia! Narnia has evil witches, and fauns. Fauns are magical creatures, just like dragons and phoenixes. What do those have in common? Fire! Fire is hot. Do you know what else is hot? Sauces made out of peppers, like these.

  • The answer to the bonus riddle is capes. Villains wear capes. Lady Macbeth is a villain. Lady Macbeth had a weak husband. Babies are weak. Kids are baby goats. Goats will eat anything. Fat Albert liked to eat. He is a cartoon, you know what is also a cartoon? Anime, like this.

OMG I literally just got this today and was so happy BUT the case it came in was pretty shite...It had ripples on the front plastic cover. Thankfully the actual paper cover art is completely fine. The edge on the spine of the plastic cover is also damaged all the way from top to bottom. I'm really new to dvd collecting so I dont know if this is something fixable, or if I should be smarter about which sellers from Amazon to buy from (would that make a difference? I dont know). So far as well the 2 discs I've checked have trouble when I try to skip in episodes. The picture becomes frozen but the audio keeps playing. My biggest gripe is that in both the menus of the discs, when you click on episodes the new screen doesnt load. You see the arrow pointing to the different options but you dont see the episode title names. I know I could potentionally get it replaced, but how would I know I would even get a new one that didnt have that problem?

Also, in my DVD collection I like the idea of purchasing the FIRST original release of a dvd. Is there anyway of knowing whether this: https://www.amazon.com/Daria-Complete-Animated-Tracy-Grandstaff/dp/B0019N8P2W/ref=tmm_dvd_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= or this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07D9FGYXW?pf_rd_p=330fbd82-d4fe-42e5-9c16-d4b886747c64&pf_rd_r=70BY87FQ0RD73X8A2JCJ came out first? My wife breast feeds and I occasionally bottle feed. I've noticed that depending on the bottle nipple, milk from a bottle flows very fast into my daughter's mouth. After she drinks it all and there's no more left sometimes she's still fussy. But after a few minutes she slips into milk comma. Compare that to the breast... it's more of a slow and steady flow that she has to work for by sucking. She almost always falls asleep on the boob. I recently bought some better bottle nipples that restrict the flow and she has to work a little harder to suck on them. Maybe that would help.

Also, I hope you've heard of the 5 Ss. I highly recommend this video:

http://www.amazon.com/Happiest-Baby-Block-Harvey-Karp/dp/B0088Y6C0W/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1398174413&sr=1-1&keywords=happiest+baby+on+the+block

And yeah, it gets better. This week my 3 month old started sleeping from 9 or 10pm to 6 or 7am.

Good luck!

Hey everyone! If you love the show please check out /r/cowboybebop and join us in the conversation. We're constantly discovering new things about this amazing anime.

And if you're not aware, a blu ray version of the show was recently released. The perfect Christmas present for the Cowboy Bebop fan in your life.

Glad I was able to convince you! it really is worth it. i mean the results speak for themselves!

Just one thing though, make sure that this is the box set you get:

https://www.amazon.com/Alien-Anthology-Aliens-Resurrection-Blu-ray/dp/B001AQO3QA/ref=tmm_mfc_title_1?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1469153835&sr=8-1

And not this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Alien-Quadrilogy-Blu-ray-Tom-Skerritt/dp/B00MBNZ1Y4/ref=tmm_mfc_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1469153835&sr=8-1

The 2014 blu-ray quadrilogy set (not sure why they brought that name back) from what i understand, is just the 4 movies and does not include the two bonus feature disks. so unless you dont want the extras, make sure you get the 2010 antholgy set not the 2014 quadrilogy set. (the disks themselves are the same though, so there is no difference in quality between the movies themselves in these sets)

I loved Daria as a teen.

And just as I was about to comment that I wish it was on Netflix, or that I was ever able to find the DVD's in Barnes and Noble or Best Buy, I happened to punch it into Amazon. They've got the complete series for only nineteen dollars!

Which is just cheap enough to not make me feel upset that Amazon makes it sudden impulse buying so easy.

Can confirm, I can watch the free first episode of The Man in the High Castle at Amazon US in Finland without Prime, without U.S. billing address. After signing up for Prime I was able to watch the other episodes, too.

However, looks like the Amazon US billing / signup system won't let you get the Video-only Prime ($8.99/mo) without a U.S. billing address: http://i.imgur.com/ivp9xy6.png

When signing up for a full Prime ($10.99/mo or $99/y), one still gets a warning that Prime Video will not be available, though with those it actually lets the user continue the signup: http://i.imgur.com/x6ENIRY.png

edit: The Watch Abroad help page seems to suggest this is for U.S. customers who travel abroad, though, so I'm not 100% sure this is intended to work like this. But maybe they will launch it officially as a worldwide service soon...

edit 2: Amazon Germany and Amazon UK Prime sign-up pages (Germany, UK) allowed me to sign up for the Video-only monthly plan as well, unlike the US sign-up page. Similarly, I tested The Man in the High Castle and it was viewable.

To clarify the question:

There are DVD releases that I have seen come out such as the Ultimate Matrix Collection and Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, that packed so many special features into the DVD set it made it fun to own DVDs again.

There are restorations that have come out such as the Wizard of Oz special edition that made the picture and sound so vibrant and clear that you could see the actual burlap pattern in the scarecrow's face. They digitally painted out any scratches or lines, literally one cel at a time.

There are DVD re-releases such as the entire Studio Ghibli collection (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, etc.) with amazing distribution and backing from Disney/Pixar and more specifically, John Lasseter that made the movies so accessible and "mainstream" with new English dubs from well known American actors that it literally introduced anime to a whole new generation of viewers.

I don't know anything about Criterion, but I would imagine they fit into this picture somewhere.

I purchased this set for my first watch of the series: Amazon Link. No issues with compatibility that I experienced; good quality.

It's got the mini-series, the complete series including extended versions of some episodes, and Razor. It's missing The Plan, but I think this box set is a pretty good value - it's really decently priced compare to other box sets.

Edit- messed up link

u/WolfSpiderBuddy · 2 pointsr/GODZILLA

I would say that depends on what you have access to, and how much you're going to jump into it. I will say from the beginning that there is no consensus on any of this, so don't take any reply as the gospel.

The most obvious answer is to start at the beginning - Gojira, the 1954 Japanese original. Many folks say it's the best ever made.

Another option would be to start at the other end, the best "modern" movies before the new one. I would recommend either Godzilla against Mechagodzilla from 2002, or its sequel, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS from 2003.

If you're ready to really "commit" to watching several movies, for the very low price of $21 you can get this boxed set from Amazon that has seven movies, including the first one (Japanese and American versions) and you'll get the classic monsters that will be popping up in the G14 sequels: Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan.

My personal favorite Godzilla movie is Return of Godzilla from 1984 (sometimes called Godzilla 1985 because it was released in the US in 1985). The problem is that it's very hard to find, and you shouldn't wait to jump into the movies until you can find this one.

  1. This movie is so special to me. When I was going through a hard time a few years back, Howls Moving Castle was just about all that would lull me to sleep. I watched it every single night for months to occupy my brain from bad thoughts about someone who had broken my heart. The movie is so beautifully executed with breathtaking back drops and perfect voices. Since then, Netflix has removed the movie and now I am finding myself in need of the constant stream of the movie again. It would come in handy now!

  2. I love movies because... they have the ability to take us away, even for a moment, from the reality in our actual lives.

  3. I don't have an 3D movies on my list but please just refer back to my number one...

Here's the US store link.

I can confirm it has everything except The Plan. (It doesn't have Blood and Chrome, but that is a prequel-type thing.)

I bought this and watched it all (for the first time) a few months ago. There were some questions about what players it would work on - all I know is it played fine on my PS3.

I saw some of the reviews commenting on transferring issues/quality issues... I never saw the original airing or the show on DVD, but I thought the quality on blu ray was good and had nothing to complain about.

You can find plenty of tutorials on youtube, but if you got some $ to spend, get a copy of DJ Qbert's complete DO-IT-YOURSELF, Vol. 1 Skratching DVD. Qbert shows and explains lots of dope techniques from basic to next level stuff, you can choose several angles to watch from, get all the intricacies + it has some educational bits and other fun features to keep you entertained.

You can find it cheaper on Ebay. There is also a volume 2, but its mostly sessions and the gang goofing around.

u/PongApp · 2 pointsr/anime

My son refused to sleep on his back, even when swaddled. For the first 3 months of his life he slept in a mamaroo with permission from his pedi. But the best advice I was given as when I watched Happiest Baby on the Block (Link) for the first 3 month after birth you need to have the mindset that you're in the "fourth trimester" and they're not okay with the big bright world yet and that's okay.

u/americanfrancois · 6 pointsr/BSG

This is the set I purchased not too long ago. It ended up being a UK version but it worked fine on all my players (PS4, Xbone, and some at a friend's house)

https://www.amazon.com/Battlestar-Galactica-Complete-Blu-ray-Packaging/dp/B0027UY8B8

Came with extended versions of episodes (I recommend watching these over the regular ones!), a bunch of extras such as deleted scenes, concept art, commentary. It had a little pamphlet full of spoilers that I recommend new viewers avoid. It has the miniseries, every episode of the show, and Razor (in standard and extended), but it's missing The Plan.

The packaging was neat and fairly sturdy and will definitely last a while. Doesn't look bad either. The price is terrific too.

As for 4K releases, I'm not sure. BSG is kind of a dead franchise like Stargate. At least for now. BSG came back from the dead once and Star Trek did it twice. The problem with 4K and BSG is I'm not sure how well a lot of the shots and effects would hold up and it might require a bit of investment for Universal to make. There would have to be a pretty substantial show of interest among fans for such a project.

how come none has mentioned Cosmos by Carl Sagan yet?

Here you go, I just changed your life. Seriously though, watching this at a [6-7] were some of the best moments in my life. it's like a contemplative, poetic odyssey of the mind from the infinitely small to infinitely large.

oh yeah -- IT'S ON NETFLIX.

If you can get your hands on this DVD . . . BUY IT. If not, just go online and youtube "DJ QBERT DO IT YOURSELF." Those videos pretty much set the foundation for what I'm able to do today.

But on another note, the best way to learn is having sessions with people who are already familiar with the art form.

u/port53 · 4 pointsr/Cosmos

Buy the show when it comes out on BD. Seriously, that'll make them more money than they'd make on advertising to you, and you'll get the benefit of watching it in a format you like now and supporting future shows in the same vein. Plus, you'll get to rewatch the whole thing over again without TV station over-branding on the screen.

You can pre-Order it on Amazon now for US$54.

u/Mark316 · 2 pointsr/GODZILLA

First of all, don't pirate anything. There are only a couple that you could really justify pirating, but there's no reason to start with those. If you're truly interested and want to support Godzilla, pay for the movies.

A good starting point is the DVD The Godzilla Collection. It contains the following movies:

  • Godzilla (1954)
  • Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
  • Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
  • Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
  • Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
  • All Monsters Attack (1969)
  • Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

In addition to the Japanese versions, all the U.S. edited cuts are included as well. However, I believe the original Godzilla is cropped to be widescreen, so if you want the original aspect ration, I suggest the Criterion release available on Blu-ray or DVD.

A good place to start for some of the more recent movies is The Toho Godzilla Collection, Volumes 1 & 2. This set contains the following:

  • Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)
  • Godzilla vs. Mothra, aka Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth (1992)
  • Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)
  • Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994)
  • Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)
  • Rebirth of Mothra (1996)
  • Rebirth of Mothra II (1997)
  • Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999)
  • Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
  • Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
  • Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)
  • Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)
  • Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

Full disclosure, I think this collection is only on DVD, but all of these movies are also available on Blu-ray in various singe- and multi-disc packs. But if you don't care about Blu-ray, this is a great set.

This doesn't cover every Godzilla movie, but those two box sets are both pretty good ways to start, I think. If you have questions about specific movies or anything else let me know.

While i cant say for sure what it is, I can tell you what it is not.

It's Widescreen, so this excludes the Dragon Box and Blu-Ray "Level Sets"(discontinued before finishing) because they are 4:3.

Audio is clearly the "Remaster" or "Funi V2" (post singles release).

If i had to take a guess id say this came from Either the Orange Bricks or the Blu-ray Release

One other possibility is the more obscure "Ultimate Uncut" version which was discontinued before finishing also, however i don't think its this version because it usually comes pared with a unique intro rather then the japanese one.

It shouldn't be to hard to tell if its the Orange Brick version with a little searching, its rather notorious for having bad cropping to fit the widescreen format (the blurays apparently do a more selective and thus better job at this).

This is why most people praise the Dragon Box version and were rather upset that the Level Sets got canceled in favor of the Cropped/Widescreen Blu-Rays.

u/HiroProtagonist1984 · 3 pointsr/scifi

Rather than a book, have you considered videos? I'm thinking Carl Sagan's original Cosmos "series". It's all available for free on youtube, though it's extremely disorganized. However, you can buy the set at Amazon for $77. It might be a very good investment, especially if you also have kids.
