So I was just recently handed a situation - Amazon shipped me a LG 65inch OLED C8 TV (most likely 2018 model) instead of a 2018 Sony Bravia X830F LED TV.

I did some preliminary research and found that OLED is of course a premium to LED TVs, so essentially as a consumer, if you want to say, "match" the performance of a OLED television from a LED perspective, one must "scale up" in certain areas/features.

Due to the very limited online resources comparing the two televisions (because you are essentially comparing oranges to apples) I have now turned to the Reddit community for guidance and what your thoughts on this matter would be. In your own calculated mind, would you advise me to keep the LG television, or accept the return and exchange for the original Sony 70inch TV.

IMO, you should get a TCL Roku TV if you are on a budget. If good HDR is important to you get the P series. The P series offers one of the best smart tv interfaces out right now, 3 HDMI ports, deep black levels (not OLED good) but good for the price. If you just want a good 4k set, and don't care about high quality HDR, get the S series. They are both good values at amazon right now with out a black friday deal. I'm not sure but I doubt they will be discounted much more. OLED is top of the line in terms of picture quality. Currently OLED is only made by LG and Sony. I prefer the LG mainly for its smart tv interface but both are remarkable. Perfect black levels are among the many positive qualities of OLED. Both the 2017 OLEDs I mentioned support 4k Dolby Vision and HDR 10 (so does the TCL P series.) Just be aware of burn in with OLEDs. Might want to get a warranty for your expensive TV. Good luck!

Well if that's your budget I'd recommend this:
If you're unwilling to budge on the 65 in. measurement then I would definitely go with the x900e. It has excellent, deep blacks due to its local dimming and full-array LED back-lighting. It also has a massive color gamut meaning it will support HDR content extremely well. The one real crux of this television is its viewing angles. The x900e utilizes a VA (Vertical Alignment) panel, which causes some muddling of blacks and brightness when viewing the display from a side angle. This can become an issue for living rooms with wide viewing areas, but for the most part is generally not a concern.
On the other hand, for $100 more, you could go for a 55 in. LG B7 OLED TV. It is a step down in size, yes, but a step up in essentially everything else. OLED televisions utilize a full array of Organic Light Emitting Diodes, hence the acronym. These make up every pixel of the screen and are capable of individually dimming themselves and emitting color. This is different from LCD LED televisions that utilize a color producing panel which is then illuminated by a back-light. Blacks, colors and brightness levels of OLED displays are unrivaled as a result of this design and maintain consistent performance at all viewing angles as opposed to the x900e's VA panel.

With your current budget, I would personally be choosing between these two. It is just a question of whether or not you are willing to compromise on size.
On a side note: if you are waiting for something better, that something is probably going to end up being an OLED. Prices for OLED displays will probably not come down for at least several years; so if you are waiting, it will likely be to save money for a larger OLED display. The x900e, on the other hand, is one of the best LCD LED displays on the market and will definitely remain so for the foreseeable future. If you end up with an x900e, it would without a doubt hold up until prices drop on OLED televisions.

You can't compare "bags of rice of the same size and brand" across grocery stores as each have their own strategies in getting you through the door. One store may decide to have a $5 off sale but other items wouldn't be on sale, and as most families do their grocery shopping in one place, stores take advantage of that. Stores will take losses on certain items and higher profits on others according to their research, the season, etc.

Electronics are a different retailing model as most people do research into pricing prior to purchase as they aren't likely to repeatedly buy the product.

Price fixing in any of these scenarios would mean these retailers got together and said "hey let's take a 50% profit margin on these products instead of the 10% profit margin that the recommended MSRP would allow us." And because no one else sold it, consumers would be forced to pay the heftier price.

You are saying retailers dropping their prices around the same time is price fixing, so what do you expect them to do? Best Buy lowers their price for Mario Party to $45, earning them a $2 profit per copy, but Amazon and Wal-mart have to stay at $60? They'd literally get no sales off Mario Party because everyone would buy from Best Buy.

Yes. There are more than a couple 4k TVs that are capable of running at 1080p120 either natively or with some tweaking. I'm not sure of many that support >1080p and >60Hz simultaneously.

Save up an extra 300 bucks and get the 2018 LG B8 for $1600, it's worth it. No LCD can match an OLED for image quality in general and while there are very good HDR LCD's the HDR on OLED's is quite good to begin with.

The B8 has two important HDR functions the 2017 C7/B7 series do not

1. LG changed they way they track HDR metadata giving a better more accurate presentation.
   
2. They added a dynamic tone mapping feature in game mode that can greatly improve the HDR experience (though it my vary from title to title).
   
   Both of those features help combat the overly dim/dark scenes you can get in some HDR implementations due to miss matched tone mapping systems that affect all types of HDR10 across LCD and OLED.
   
   LG have said the 2017 models will not be getting the above features. So if you buy a C7/B7 you are reliant on a game having an internal HDR calibration setting to adjust to the display or hope that down the road the HDR game group which MS & LG are now a part of will sort out these issues as the console scans the TV for HDR profile into and makes the adjustments on it's side.
   
   Given the amount of money your spending you want everything just right with maximum flexibility, get the B8.

I got the OLED65C7P in November and love it. The only burn in issue I have is when using Netflix/Hulu/etc. The time between when I select a show and the show starts (normally just a black screen) there is some image retention. It goes away as soon as the show starts. I’ve never noticed it when gaming or while watching anything.

It took me a while to get the settings how I like them but now I think it looks great. Also, if you have never ordered a tv from Amazon I would recommend it. They carry it in, unpack it, set it up, make sure it works, and leave with all the packaging so you don’t have to break down a giant box.

Thanks for the response, ended up finding it refurbished for $3996 on Amazon but for the life of me its not letting me share it from the app and I'm mobile. Bought the $99 3-year warranty (plus it's covered for the first 90 days by Amazon anyway) figuring I'm still coming out almost a rack cheaper.

Search Amazon for "LG OLED77C9PUB C9 Series 77" 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV (2019) (Renewed)", it says there are currently four left in stock at that price. There was another not-licensed-by-LG group that was selling one for $3600 but their specs were weird and their response to my questions about it were lame so I paid extra for the assurance of dealing with an established group + warranty. Newegg had it for $619.99 but has since sold out. At that price it's a good deal, but at closer to $1,200 there are better options like the LG OLED B8

It is very hard to find a television with decent sound anymore. This is why external audio setups are becoming more popular. Setting up audio with your system can be anything from a cheap, crappy sound bar (waste of money IMHO) to spending tens of thousands of dollars on DACs, preamps, amps, speakers, cabling, ect. to anything else in between. I suggest taking u/Brandorff's suggestion and check out a good starter audio thread like r/zeos who breaks things down very simply and tiers the setups depending on different budget requirements. I think the F8500 is the best tv out right now (below $6000) and I think you will be very happy with it!

My suggestion when looking for audio is to find audio shops and other electronics stores in the area and just listen to what is out there. Everyone prefers different things when it comes to audio, so the more you listen the better your decision you will make on your future audio purchases!

If I had to buy one now I'd get the newest OLED model. In 2015 OLED's were way to expensive and way to glitchy with tons of issues but now they are more stable and will offer a better picture over anything out.

The trick is to use Amazon Warehouse deals. Use a reputable seller, one of the companies with thousands of positive feedbacks. Here's the TV I bought - LG OLED OLED55C7P, pretty-much universally described as the best TV on the market right now. Go to the Warehouse listings, and there's one that could be on your door in two days for $1255.72. It's listed as "used - good", which probably just means that it's not in its original package, but could theoretically mean it's missing a part. It's shipped from and sold by Amazon, so if anything were wrong with the actual set, they'd make it right.

I'd actually recommend getting one of the next two listings, from Vanns or Video & Audio Center. They are both new in the box and come with a full manufacterer's warranty. I bought mine from V&AC, and it was at my door about five days later. They'll call to schedule a time for delivery, so no worries about it being left somewhere unattended.

I know it's a bit above what you said you're looking to spend, but I swear to you it's worth the investment. My son is playing Infamous 3 on it right now, and you can't even imagine how awesome it looks.

Whichever one you get, be sure to tweak the motion settings first, because out-of-the-box both the Sony and the LG had motion smoothing turned on, which produces the "soap opera effect" and makes you think there's something wrong with the TV. ;-)

I have a 58” plasma with seating at 8ft and 12ft. At 12ft, it’s by no means large, but still easily enjoyable and all text on-screen is easily readable (easy to tell if a screen is too small or not).

I would likely go with the OLED.

If an iOS user, load up the Amazon app and click on a listing for a 65”/75” tv listing (specifically, here’s the 65” OLED and 75” Sony), and then use the augmented reality camera to see exactly how large each would look in your space.

Oled would be 2-3 grand (depending on size) unless you're buying them the second they release, which is dumb.

Depending on your financial situation you want THIS TV for the Xbox One X. That's what I'm getting and it's a thing of beauty.

It depends on your grading space, but I would go with one of the LG OLED tv’s. I use a 55” C9. The B8 can be picked up for about $1200, depending on where you are.

You would need a some kind of Decklink and an SDI to HDMI converter. You would also need to calibrate it. Again, depending on where you are, you should hire someone to do this. It’s not an unreasonable cost and you only need to do it once or twice a year. It’s better to hire someone who knows what they’re doing rather than to spend a lot of money on equipment and attempt to figure it out yourself.

FYI prices on the C9 lineup were significantly cheaper just over a week ago. The price below was from Amazon, but BB had the same price on their site (plus they price match Amazon anyway). I'm guessing LG is requiring their retail partners to raise prices for the next few weeks so they can "discount" again for Black Friday. I'd highly suggest waiting a few weeks.

I bought a Samsung UN55MU6300 two months ago and I'm over it already. Netflix is okay but in other programming the blacks are so washed out imo it was a waste of $500. I wish I had just spent the $1500 on an OLED like an LG OLED55C7P. I'm a noob so ask others to back it up but everything i've read so far says brand doesn't matter near as much as OLED vs non-OLED.

I just made the jump to 4K with the LG OLED65C7P and I am incredibly impressed so far, it is just a fine piece of technology. I'd almost gaurantee a price drop within the next month or so, so I'd wait a little bit.

I'd also pick up a AV receiver with HDCP 2.2 support in order to eliminate the possibility of needing to upgrade any time in the next 5 years. The one I am getting is the Denon AVRS510BT

And Finally, unless you have any means of accessing 4K UHD Content via Netflix/UHD Blu Ray Player/ Game Console, There's really no reason to upgrade to 4K just yet.

Make a list of what you want, and cut it down to the necessities to start off.

The TVs are pretty decently priced, were even cheaper on Amazon during the sales last year. I expect prices to fall even lower this holiday season.

LG 55B9 OLED $1580 canadian, all time low. HDMI 2.1 and gsync compatible, 4K@120Hz, perfect blacks. Obviously beware static content or UI elements, thats basically the only catch here.

You can get a 55" OLED for $1300, cheaper if you wait for a sale, so like 25-30% of the cost. Obviously still a big savings, but as the owner of an OLED TV, if you can afford it, my god is worth it. It's the biggest leap in screen tech since the first flat screen plasmas 15-20 years ago. The blacks are so fucking black that you think something is wrong with your TV the first time you see it, because you've been living your life tricking your eyes into thinking greys on displays are actually black.

The folks on liftgammagain talk about this quite a bit. You'd obviously need a lut box. Panasonic OLED That's the one they use.

LG released a new model that is the same as the others, but it does NOT have onboard atmos, which means that the TV speakers cannot do atmos, but this shouldn't matter if you use a sound system anyways.

Sony used LG OLED panels. Get an LG. The Sony OLEDs are a massively higher price for practically nothing. They're a terrible purchase because of this.

Really tempted. It's a 2018 model but for the price I can live with it. Still, it's on the high end of what I want to spend and I game so I'm always worried about burn-in. Had a plasma and I think I spent more time worrying about burn in then enjoying the tv.
