Why a paper lantern floor lamp, specifically? I don't have anything against it, but I'm curious why you mention it! I was going to just go with a regular floor lamp with one of those upside down cone things on top (can you tell I have no idea what I'm talking about?), but that was just by default. I haven't really given the lamp or the dresser much thought when it comes to design.

This is going to sound like a dumb question, but why do I need so many sets of sheets? I also could use a quick summary of the difference between comforters and duvets, as well as covers and sheets. I bought some cheap ones from Target that seem to get the job done, but I think I'm ready for an upgrade.

I love this! I definitely want my room to be the most attractive place in the household (almost magnetic) when I bring over someone who I'm interested in.

Do you mean where I have it in the picture? I already rotated the bed to the wall with the cross on it, but I haven't pushed it into the corner because I was thinking of putting a nighstand there. It gives a little more room between the bed and the closet, but it does create this long space between the bed and the wall with the window. However, I think that space will look more natural and "filled in" once I add some plants below the window along the wall ledge. I'll do some experimenting once I actually buy some of these things.

If you're only going to live here for another year, I wouldn't go out and purchase any major pieces of furniture unless you plan on moving to another place with more space. I say this because your place look eerily familiar to an offictel I had in Korea or a small apartment in Japan. Are you teaching overseas?

Anyway, I think you did a great job with the layout and with what you have. Everything seems to have a dual function in a way.

My recommendations would be:

• Add more color with framed pictures or some wall art. Do you take photos? Consider have some of them framed for cheap.
  
  
• More pillows for the bed, so it can double as lounge seating. Think throw pillows.
  
  
• Can you get a TV stand with a bit more storage below? Something like this from IKEA. You'll be able to put a little bit more on display (books, trinkets, etc.). Plus, you can stain the wood to your liking.
  
  
• Check out these string lights. I have a feeling you have really obnoxious overhead lighting, but awesome natural light. You can string these lights around the big window like a "U" shape. It will definitely give off some nice ambiance at night.
  
  I've been looking at your room quite a bit, and one thing I realized is I cannot deduce anything about you. Meaning, there's nothing in your room besides some generic wall art that shows off your personality. It's clean, minimal, but not expressive.
  
  Try thinking about some of the things you like and how you can incorporate them into your place. I don't mean putting up a bunch of posters on your wall like a college dorm room or displaying toys you bought. Make it tasteful and mature.
  
  So for example, in my apartment, I have some things on display that I've come across in my life or when I travel. Little glass bottles of "medicinal drinks" from Korea, Japan, and China. Some random trinkets from wherever displayed in certain places around my house. An old SLR camera I use every once in a while. A few high quality screenprints of bands I enjoy, city transit system maps are cool (I have this one), and maybe reprints from artists you like. A few tea candle holders and a scented candle goes a long way too.

Hey all, I just started collecting a few months ago after missing hot wheels as a kid. My collection is small, (and all black lol) and I wanted a nice display case to show it off, but didn’t want to spend a lot — thought I would share with everybody how I did it.

First I got this Display Case from Michaels. Use their 40% off coupon and you can get it for $35. It holds 24 cars at an angle.

I bought the LEDs off Amazon for $9 — it's just a simple 3xAA Battery Powered String Light. I chose this because you can trim the length of the lights down to only what you need, and it's easily concealable as the wires are very thin.

Wiring was simple. You can easily remove the back panel on the case. I just used some black electrical tape and zig-zagged the lights from top to bottom and cut off the excess. I also left a little extra so I could run them out the back and create a backlight for the case. I'll probably paint the battery housing black to hide it more, and maybe move it to the bottom or back if I mount the case on a wall.

Last, I used some mounting putty to secure all my cars in place.

All in all, it took $45 and 45 minutes to get it all setup. I think it turned out pretty nice, hope you guys like it too!

Hello hello, first-time poster here. I've been lurking around this thread for a while now and after recently completing a new PC build, I decided it was time to put some effort into my battlestation as well. I call this... Japanese Steampunk. Maybe not so much steampunk, but I do really like the copper and wood elements.

[EDIT] Yes, I know this isn't steampunk. I'm sorry, I wish I could change the title but I can't. I had steampunk elements in mind when designing the room, hence the title, so I apologize for misleading anyone. Let's just all focus on the Japanese elements, then! :D

For the computer, I did my best to go with as much white as I could. Many of the parts (especially the peripherals) were chosen with the color and a budget in mind. My original intention was to use one monitor for my PC and the other for console gaming, but the boyfriend ended up hooking his PC up to the second monitor so that we can play Overwatch side-by-side, ha.

The desk and shelving were custom-made by me with parts from IKEA, a little spraypaint, and a few power tools.

I haven't added up what everything cost me, but I'm going to ballpark around $2500. Not cheap, but pretty good considering that this setup will last me for years.

I've always hated the built in overhead lighting in virtually all the rooms I've lived in, so I always opt for some strange combination of hanging string lights of various kinds. What I've found is pretty nice is running an extension cord up the wall and hiding it behind a tapestry (not sure if that's your vibe though). I then start the string lights up at the ceiling and I feel like there's a good amount of customizability. Something like these will give you a ton of light compared to the Christmas kind, and it won't seem so unseasonally festive. The drawback is the lights are really delicate, so I'd recommend doing the hanging first and then screwing in all the bulbs. They've got all kinds of sizes of these which are pretty damned good for holding up the lights. Then it's just up to you how you want to arrange. Hope this was at least a little helpful!

I haven't attempted outdoor lighting yet but I can imagine this would be a fair amount of work, especially without a structure. I wonder if you could use the TS-99B stands with a bracket on top to hold them up around a perimeter? Or maybe pipe/drape poles and base plates. Zigzag over the audience? I don't know how you'd do that due to the weight. I bought them at Home Depot under the Hampton Bay brand. But they are rather heavy. I have them supported by small hooks at every bulb which was a little overkill but it's a permanent install. You'd need stands fairly close together or cabling like Kameix1 mentioned to support the weight. Pricing doesn't sound terrible at around $650 but the liability has me on edge.

I am bringing an Aurora Borealis projector. Runs off usb. Gonna lay down in a vag bag and use it under the ez up or before bed in the tent.

Got this as well. Gives a nice warm light, its super long too. And you can mount the whole thing on a flag and use the remote to control it. I do think the multi colors would look cooler, but the warm white is more useful as a light.

but it sounds like you're committed to the LEDs you have. I guess I'm just confused as to why you wouldn't daisychain all 4 TLC5940s to save pins and just treat each aurora separately in code

Yeah the frames around the tiles are white, though i thought that might not look bad with darker panels considering the previous suggestion of a dark ceiling with white recessed lights. Installing new lighting is a bit out of my budget sadly but I like the idea of having some dim glove string lights like these along the ceiling
I do also prefer matte colours, never much liked stuff that’s too reflective

its just some PHP to scrape the metar and convert to flight condition and then some python to talk to the LEDs.

Schematics is plug the green wire from the LEDs to GPIO pin 18 on the R Pi.

I used a diode between power and the LED power as well. Cant remember why but I saw it one of the docs.

I run a cron every 15 minutes on the pi to run the PHP script and update the colors.

These lightweight plastic LEDs are more ornamental and not the brightest lights going. And we have lanterns, LED flashlights, and hiking headlamps too. The wife wanted something easily clipped onto the Batwing and these work well.

For backpacking I’d want something sturdier, I could see these cracking if not packed within a hardshell case.

Hang LED Edison lighting from the ceiling rafters. If you took your time, you could probably run a power cord up the corner clipping into onto the siding...and it wouldn't look all that bad.

Agreed. I use 3M Command Clear Light Clips. The only difference between the 'indoor' and 'outdoor' versions is the command strips. (The 'outdoor' strips work just fine indoors, but the 'indoor' strips don't last outdoors.)

Don't overthink this. There are tons of LED string lights on Amazon Prime for under $15 that are either battery or solar powered. I've included a few links below. There are probably dozens more. Just find one that'll work for you. Minimal cost and effort involved.
