Keep a selection of different pads and tampons so she can figure out what she likes. When I started I used pads because my mom only used pads but at summer camp I wanted to swim so bad so I borrowed a tampon from my friend and figured it out. The instructions in the box are helpful because they have a graphics but a video explaining how to use a tampon would be better probably.
If shes really into sports especially swimming she will want to use tampons.
I usually had a light flow so tampons for heavier flow would hurt especially trying to take them out.
When a tampon is used it will easily come out.
If the tampon is to light it will leak so she will probably have to figure out which tampons to use on what day of her period. A panty liner and a tampon are great till she can figure out her needs.
A multi-pack box is the best for this. But look for boxes that have light, regular, and super not regular, super, and extra super. I have a hard time lately finding light ones so I order on Amazon. That might be a good option to start with so you can look at what's offered at home and not in store.
Also don't accidentally buy pads for incontinence instead of periods. I accidentally did that once but it may embarrass a young person. Always is a popular pad brand and they make both.
If you buy overnight pads they are like a foot long. But they are good for night especially for a heavy flow.
This is what I buy for pads. These are like the latest if pad technology. I really like them, I just buy the regular ones.
Always Infinity Feminine Pads for Women, Size 1, Regular Absorbency, with Wings, Unscented, 36 Count - Pack of 3 (108 Count Total) (Packaging May Vary) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IULATV0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LN-CDbDTXMNE6
This is tampon multi pack I would suggest. These are like Costco size so maybe not these but something similar.
Tampax Pearl Plastic Tampons, Mutlipack, Light/Regular/Super Absorbency, Unscented, 50 Count (Packaging May Vary) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J4YWX94/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gQ-CDbS88TM9M
For tampons I would start with a plastic applicator. They are easier to use than cardboard. When she's used some for awhile she can figure out what she likes. They also have tampons that have to applicator which a lot go women like but I would not have been comfortable to use them when I was young.
Mom guilt is a total real thing. Don't beat yourself up over things that aren't in your control. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks, and then my daughter got diagnosed with IUGR at 36 weeks. I felt so guilty my whole 3rd trimester, I made myself pretty miserable. I kept thinking that I had done something wrong and how my kid wasn't even born yet and I was already a terrible mom. It's not your fault and you are already a great mom! Just do your best.
On a lighter note, here are some things I loved and plan to use again (sorry for the length!)
Please feel free to ask any questions! We are happy to help here. :)
I am on the copper iud for birth control and know all too well about heavy periods. There are different kinds of overnight pads. I like the always brand super heavy overnight ones, they almost look like the big ones the hospital gives you after baby lol. But they work wonders and are really absorbent. Here's a link to what they look like on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Always-Overnight-Extra-Heavy-Unscented/dp/B0029NYQ6A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451786769&sr=8-1&keywords=Always+super+heavy+overnight. Way to be an awesome dad and get involved with periods, I wish I had a dad like you that I could've been open with them about. Good luck!!!
Edit (sorry forgot to include this one)- 5. portable and easy to dig anywhere I need to hide my potions in handy spots in case I get in trouble
Bonus PointsMultipurpose serve as a cape, nap time, keeps me warm, I can sit on it under a tree
I personally use a menstrual cup & reusable pads for overnight backup & for light days. I absolutely LOVE my cloth pads. I hated how even a clean dry pad felt; plasticity, itchy, and always caused a rash. The reusable cloth pads are a million times more comfortable against my skin. True, there is a trade off with the thickness of the pad. Washing out your own blood in the sink takes some getting used to as well. But it was absolutely worth it for me. I am super cheap, so I bought a very inexpensive set from Amazon here which work very well for me. The set came with a wet bag too, which is great if I need to change my pad while I'm away from home. Maybe TMI (but I would want t know) the charcoal Paris (EDIT - PADS, stupid autocorrect!) have don't get that awful smell like disposable pads did. It's wonderful that I'm not throwing money away every month with traditional pads & tampons; I haven't spent a penny on sanitary products for about a year now. Not to mention how we all know it's more sustainable not throwing away all that plastic.
I haven't tried the Infinite pads, but most brands of pads irritate my skin. I only spot so I can't use tampons. My OBGYN, who is the best, recommended Natracare.
I get mine from a health food store in my town, but I've seen them at Whole Foods and Wegmans (a bit more expensive there). I hope this helps and congratulations!
Menstruating cis woman here!
Plastic applicator, regular size, unscented. Some brands have "click compact" types, which are even more compact so easier to carry in your purse. For example: https://smile.amazon.com/Kotex-Compact-Tampons-Absorbency-Fragrance-Free/dp/B00UASJM8S/ref=sr_1_10_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1540027038&sr=8-10&keywords=tampon
Cardboard applicators can be uncomfortable since it's basically the dry raw cotton against the vaginal opening. Avoid tampons without applicators (e.g., OB) since those require a bit more skill and comfort with one's own vagina. Most menstruating women can use a regular -- if it's heavy flow, she'll just have to change it earlier.
For pads, aim for unscented and moderate flow. With or without wings is really up to personal preference of the cis woman in question, and you won't be able to predict. Avoid the overnight pads, they can really feel like diapers. Again - NO SCENTS. Example: https://smile.amazon.com/Always-Ultra-Super-Wings-Unscented/dp/B01IZ5FDNA/ref=pd_bxgy_121_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01IZ5FDNA&pd_rd_r=b0be1bc6-d449-11e8-af19-2fb1fdc93008&pd_rd_w=0ELMl&pd_rd_wg=OteeQ&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=6725dbd6-9917-451d-beba-16af7874e407&pf_rd_r=Z375Z4D88N13S66AZDWZ&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=Z375Z4D88N13S66AZDWZ
If you have a menstruating cis woman friend, see if you can bum a few off of her to share with others and help pass. I would totally give supplies to a trans woman friend.
Also a note: If you look post menopausal I would be much less likely to ask. So it's less crucial for older lookin' ladies.
Hope this helps! This was my own strategy when getting communal menstrual supplies for my workplace :)
I got these pads for the first few days that are super heavy. I still have some left, I only needed such a heavy pad for the first week. After that I was able to use these regular sized ones. The wings are really helpful in getting everything to stay put, and also the longer ones are good for night-time when you may be moving more. You can also get these pad ice packs, they gave them to me at my hospital and I loved them, but you could also buy some more to have on hand.
if anyone gives you shit take it off and bleed on their furniture.
make sure you get the womens though and not the mens, it's important because in the mens they put most of the absorbing material in the front of the diaper where the penis sits, but the womens have the majority of material in the crotch and about halfway up the rear. much better
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D3H82LQ/ref=psdc_3763391_t1_B07B4SL1P2?th=1 these are a good option and actually made by the menstrual pad company always
there's also this option, which is amazons brand and about 1/4 of the price of store brand underwear but might be marginally thicker, i've never bought them before. i think they'd be about as thick as a regular depend but they do come wrapped up like a pad for throwing in your purse or keeping discreetly in the bathroom
https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Brand-Incontinence-Underwear-Absorbency/dp/B07B4SL1P2/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=womens%2Bdepends&qid=1554352930&s=gateway&sr=8-5&th=1
I buy adult diapers for my grandmother, and I know for certain that they make ones that look like actual underwear and aren't quite as bulky as the usual ones.
They also makes ones that go into your underwear like a menstruation pad/panty-liner, but are longer and much more absorbent. They're in the same section as the adult diapers and are made by the same brands. They're easier to dispose of if you have a roommate because you can just say you're on your period.
Also we've learned from experience that this is one of those things where you don't want to go for the no-name brand. My grandma always leaks with them.
Try these Tena overnight pads or these cute Depend panties. Both brands can be bought at Wal-mart or your local pharmacy. :)
I totally feel you. Yes, things smell both different and more potent. Extra discharge + extra blood flow to the area just means warmer and wetter. Combine that with pregnancy nose and you can probably smell yourself -- that doesn't mean every one else can! Panty liners do help - they're absorbent, and like you said they can be changed multiple times a day. I'm partial to the Carefree extra long panty liners.
Unscented vangichoode? I never liked Stayfree..oru cheap feeling aa.
Pinne ivide Always infinity ennoru sambhavam undu. Enne athinte spokesperson aakkiyal avarkku iniyum kashundakkam. Ithrayum nalloru pad ente jeevithathil use cheythittilla. Mattu pads aanel blood okke pad inte top il angu chill cheyyum. Ithu pad sherikkum absorb cheyyum. I love it :D and it's so lightweight too. I can mail you some if you want lol https://www.amazon.com/Always-Infinity-Wings-Heavy-Count/dp/B00J7L59K4
[Always Incredibly Thin Liners] (http://www.amazon.com/Always-Radiant-Incredibly-Liners-Unscented/dp/B007785C4W)
They're "flexi-style", so you can wear them with things during the day and boy shorts at night. Pretty absorbent, so they work as backup on your period too. Obsessed may seem strong, but seriously, these things are life-changing. I always have at least a bit of discharge, and it's a lot easier to switch out a liner during the day then feel like I'm wearing damp undies all afternoon.
Okay, not everyone wants to have to go out and try to hunt for that pair of shorts that makes your ass look AMAZING but fits the crotch too.
Personally, a reuseable panty liner works just fine for me.
I wear a lot of layers, i'm a big girl so i have my panties, my shaper THEN my pants... and still have camel toe (vag's get fat too yo). Obviously, my case is more severe than yours i would imagine... and the reusable panty liner is my solution, especially one in black because most of my underwear is dark colored.
Pants that fit just right are a little harder for me, because as a bigger lady i don't want baggy clothes to make me look even bigger than i am but too tight and i have camel toe -_- so, this is my in-between solution 'cause i'm too lazy/broke to tailor things.
I had to switch from normal panty liners to actual Poise pads made for bladder leaks because I would have so many issues. The poise pads do a better job with soaking up the pee before it becomes an issue.
For post partum bleeding I used the pads the hospital gave me. They had the mesh underwear and giant heavy duty pads, and then varying degrees going down in size. Once the package is opened they can't reuse them so take as many as you can there. Once the bleeding settled down I used [these pads] (https://www.amazon.com/Always-Infinity-Absorbency-Unscented-Packaging/dp/B019O9HILG/ref=sr_1_3_s_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1511621952&sr=1-3&keywords=always+infinity+size+2) and they worked awesome.
Always Infinity. The most amazing pads in the world. Wicks moisture away. Very little mess, very little smell. Super thin and comfortable.
Not a shill, I just love those damn pads.
No, it’s an all in one thing. (You’ll feel like you’re wearing 20 of them though)
Personally, I just went with my normal ones. I lost a fair amount of blood during delivery so they continued running pitocin to help with that. Pretty much by day 3, I was back to using these - mostly because I had them lying around.
Otherwise, prior to getting those Japanese ones, I used to use an overnight pad with 1-2 of these running perpendicular in the back. (So essentially looking like a T with the top towards the back)
We are a 20 minute drive from the hospital and husband will not leave my side, so I'd like to get everything in. I'm a notorious overpacker, too, but I'd rather have something I don't need than have not have something that I do need.
Mom Stuff:

Both
I think that covers just about everything. I used travel packing cubes to keep all of the clothing items organized, and I already had several different other travel bags that I generally use when actually leaving town, for all of the "other" items. [edited formatting]
I think you are underestimating the amount of blood there is, at least the first couple days. Just regular panties (or even period panties) are not going to do it. It's way more than a regular period. That's why they give you extra large pads and some people wear adult diapers. Like when you stand up the blood will be running down your legs. If you are sitting for an hour or so you will be sitting in a puddle of blood.
Would something like the always discreet adult diapers be better for you? I have heard they are less bulky than a pad or a regular depends, so maybe it would be less uncomfortable for you.
> I don't think he honestly even knows when he's peeing since he will just be walking along and doing it like he doesn't realize.
That screams neurological issue to me. I remember you said the vet checked him out for bladder/kidney/urethra issues, but has he had a neuro check? Because this sentence has me wondering about a possible spinal cord injury.
> Getting desperate and certainly don't want him to be an outside dog or rehome him, as he's perfect in every other way for our family, kids and other pets.
You need a belly band! Lots of options on Amazon. I use this one, with these pads.
Cloth panty liners are great. I used to use them along with my diva cup during my period. I had Lunapads. I liked them, but on lighter days just found them to be too bulky or that I would feel them sticking to myself.
At the beginning of this pregnancy, I had to use progesterone suppositories and needed a daily light liner. I've always had trouble finding a good light liner. Most are too thick or too long and I get annoyed quickly. Because this was going to be a daily thing for three months I tried a bunch of different types and U by Kotex Barely There were the best. They are low profile, just the right length and they actually do pull the moisture away from my body.
They have scented and unscented kinds. I think sometimes they're called radiant? Here they are on amazon.
That's sweet, but probably unnecessary...and assuming you're having sexual partners over any specialized products will probably make said partners concerned about your (hopefully)nonexistent girlfriend.
I say probably unnecessary because I'm assuming you are well stocked on toilet paper, and most women in that situation will just use toilet paper folded up until we can get home. Despite all the talk about it we really don't bleed that much(less than a cup the entire week for the vast majority of women) and usually our first day(the one that might catch us off guard) is very very light so it won't take much. In the months when I was broke I've actually had to use only toilet paper, and it worked out just fine.
But if you really feel your bathroom needs something there do maxi pads rather than tampons. Many women(myself included) can't get into the idea of tampons, and even the most die hard tampon fan will be out and out grateful just to get something other than the toilet paper in that situation. Here are the ones I would recommend: http://www.amazon.com/Kotex-CleanWear-Ultra-Thin-Unscented/dp/B007S8N1RQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409507326&sr=8-1&keywords=kotex+pad
If it's for a woman that might be sleeping over, consider the ultrathin overnight version here: http://www.amazon.com/Kotex-Allnighter-Ultra-Thin-Overnight/dp/B007S8N1TE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409507394&sr=8-1&keywords=kotex+pad+overnight
Your parents don't seem to have much consideration. What OCD "traits" do you have?
http://www.amazon.com/Always-Overnight-Extra-Heavy-Unscented/dp/B0029NYQ6A/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1346634811&sr=1-1&keywords=thick+sanitary+towels
These ones seem quite thick.
