Use it to bridge to your communal network, then connect your Xbox to it. Now people can't cast to your Xbox.
Just my humble anti-PCMR battlestation.

The back of this is a little wonky. I have my Chromecast plugged into my Xbox. I use the travel router to turn my University public wifi into a personalized hotspot so I can use my Chromecast and Chromecast audio (with aweseome Castdock speaker). I use a Monoprice HMDI pigtail to have my Xbox and Chromebox HDMI cords both to the right monitor and switch between the two when I need to.

Get a router that allows you to enter the captive portal information. I got this travel router so I could do this when traveling at hotels: https://smile.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1484763846&sr=8-3&keywords=travel+router
You need to get a travel router. I got this one and it works great. [HooToo TripMate Nano] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZWOQZ6)
I got got one of these hootoo travel routers.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RJmGDb4W10W1A
It lets you setup a private network off the back of a public one like xfinitywifi our something similar.
I use this...
http://www.amazon.com/HooToo-TripMate-Wireless-Pocket-Travel/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1419803685&sr=8-2&keywords=hootoo
It also allows to me load up a lot of media on an sd card for local play...
was thinking of broadcasting my own network with a travel router in the room, like this hoo too one.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00
Essentially setting up the authentication page and wifi from the cruise ship on the hoo too and then connecting the wyze cam to the hoo too.
The Fire TV stick can only play media that is also connected to the network. You have to connect the USB stick to something, like a NAS or your computer. Or this: http://amzn.com/B00HZWOQZ6
Unfortunately with the demise of MyWi you will have to drop $22 on a HooToo TripMate Nano to do what you want https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HZWOQZ6/
Get a HooToo nano wifi card reader, works great in iOS. It's only $17 on Amazon too (way cheaper and works better than the Kingston wifi card reader).
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HZWOQZ6/
A travel hotspot/router solves that problem! I picked up the HooToo Travel Hotspot and just plug it into ethernet, or connect that to hotel Wifi. Then connect your Chromecast to the wifi given off from the hotspot and you're good to go, just like a regular wifi network.
You would need a travel router http://www.amazon.com/HooToo-TripMate-Wireless-Pocket-Travel/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1418498151&sr=8-2&keywords=travel+router
You could get a small travel router that can connect to a guest wifi and get you past the splash/log in page.
Then connect the Home to the travel router.
I have this one and have used it in hotels to bridge the guest wifi network.
https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6
It can be powered with a USB cable off a laptop or cellphone charger.
Hope that helps a little.
(Note - I would only connect it to the guest network.)
Two things off the top of my head:
I don't believe so, if only because to do what you want it to would require two separate sets of Wi-Fi antennas. It's also why most laptops also can't do this with a hotel Wi-Fi but can become a hotspot if the hotel offers an ethernet connection
This won't help you right now, but as someone who travels a lot for work (~2 weeks/month for 10 months out of the year), I've been using the HooToo TripMate Nano for the past year and it's been very reliable. The device will allow you to connect to a hotel's Wi-Fi and create your own personal Wi-Fi network, works fine with browser-based hotel logins, and has a USB port to attach a network drive to share files. It's also dirt cheap, for what it does.
If you can't connect your HD straight to your router, get one of these. I use it to connect a 2TB NTFS formatted drive to my 8 year old router and can find all the files in Kodi just fine.
Well the Stick does not have a USB input for drives so that rules that out period.
The Box does have a USB input but it does only fat32 (NO NTFS) so it is a max of 2 TB drive and files up to 4GB,that will rule out 720p+ movies.
Without setting your hard drive up as a network share somehow then I would not recommend the AFTV. Someone in another thread suggested this as a plain media player for attached storage:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008NO9RRM?refRID=0JF1G7K7R0QJ6AMWASTB&ref_=pd_ybh_a_16
I switched from WDTVs and have both a stick and box, without a good router the stick will be a little problematic sometimes, I much prefer the hard wired box and works great using Kodi with my NAS. I also will pop some things on a microSD card to play real quick.
Also in another thread, someone recommended this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZWOQZ6?refRID=0JF1G7K7R0QJ6AMWASTB&ref_=pd_ybh_a_17
To turn your hard drive into a network share wirelessly.
HTH
I own this travel router and it's pretty good once you get it set up http://www.amazon.com/HooToo-TripMate-Wireless-Pocket-Travel/dp/B00HZWOQZ6
Call the front desk and ask for their technical support number. If they have one call it and ask them to whitelist your Switch on the network. They will need your MAC address.

Another way to solve for this if you travel a lot is get a Hootoo Wireless Router. I bought one last year when I was traveling up to a week per month and it was fabulous.
I would try a router first.
some thing like this if you can get it to work on your office network.
Something like this should work. I'm skeptical of the DLNA claims but it appears that HooToo provides an app for iOS and Android.
Thanks for the clarification, so it looks like I'll be picking up a small travel router with the CC then. I'm looking for something tiny and cheap (less than $20 ideally) and works well with the CC. Any recommendations? I'm torn between these two:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZWOQZ6
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007PTCFFW
http://www.amazon.com/HooToo-TripMate-Wireless-Pocket-Travel/dp/B00HZWOQZ6 is an example of one model. They also make versions that plug into the wall and that have a built in battery - look at the alternate version links on the Amazon page to navigate to them.
The idea of an integrated travel plug adapter is nice, but the Kikkerland one I linked in a different fork of the thread is smaller to pack and I prefer having the two separate - usually I want to plug in devices near the bed, but the Ethernet port is often near a desk instead.
More often than not any given apartment in downtown Berlin will be in range of at least one of the several commercial wlan networks (Vodafone, T-Online, Hotsplots). For example in my last apartment in Berlin Mitte I could connect to five of them (often they are actually separate wlans running on private routers, so technically it is actually your neighbors you are connecting to).
It usually costs around 30€/month (I think) with unlimited traffic and usually very decent bandwidth for one (!) device. But with a bit of tech ingenuity (or even better and dead easy: an inexpensive travel router like for example this) you can make it work for all your gadgets. The travel router connects to the commercial wlan, then it opens its own private wlan for your devices. Bought mine a couple of years ago, now it is among the first things I pack, wouldn't want to travel without one. First you really need to check for the strength of the signal though, anything less than 50% will be a bit of a pain.
For on the go, a Fire TV Stick (gen 2) with an OTG cable is the way to go, unless you need 4K. If you have non-Fat32 drives that hold your media that you don't want to reformat, I'd suggest some sort of file sharing device to make them available over a network. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6. I'm using a super cheap PogoPlug that I've enabled SMB sharing on, and it feeds 1080p to my FireTVs flawlessly.
"travel routers" can offer you the routing functionality you are seeking. for the most part they run from 5v
here's one with 2.4/5GHz wifi access with private wifi lan subnetting - $45
and here's one with basic 2.4GHz wifi access with private wifi lan subnetting - $22
You can use one of these too: https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6
This thing?
Can confirm, While the rumor is future OS updates on Roku will allow you to connect around splash pages at hotels etc, I too always bring a travel sized router with me. I went with the HooToo travel router as it was on sale for $15 in December.
https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance--TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465831528&sr=8-1&keywords=travel+router
I have an older HooToo from Amazon. Think I paid about $25 at the time. Works great and I'd recommend the brand again.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_wta2AbX2REGC7
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZWOQZ6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
HooToo HT-TM02 is on sale for prime members, you could plug up an external or thumb drive etc to this and access it with your phone and just easily swap files you want to use for VR back and forth.
http://slickdeals.net/f/8471539-hootoo-tripmate-nano-wireless-n-pocket-travel-router-15
That is the slickdeals thread for it there is a code you can apply "BRQQQI64" takes off $4.
(it is even capable of running OpenWRT)
Instead of using the Nighthawk, use a travel router like the one I use: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It can connect to an existing wifi network or a wired network. I use it when I travel and it works great.
Use a travel router as a bridge. You use their app to sign the router into your university's network. This gives the router access to the internet. Now you have your own private network with the standard SSID and password which you can connect the google home to.
Here is the cheapest option I have found on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1503192526&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=travel+router&dpPl=1&dpID=3188yDCIq7L&ref=plSrch
Doesn't that open your chromecast up to anyone else on the network in the hotel?
I just have a TripMate Nano for less than $20. Can connect to hotel wifi then bridge to your own private network in the room, or even plug into the LAN if there is an active one in the room and create a personal wifi network.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZWOQZ6
If you travel a lot it might be worth looking into a travel router like this one. Takes a few minutes to setup but allows Chromecast to work.
I'm using a mobile router to share internet with my laptop and phone at work and this has been coming up for the past few weeks when I try to access the game through wifi, but loads fine with a data connection. I've tried clearing the cache, uninstalling & reinstalling but nothing works. Any suggestions?
If all else fails, get one of these to handle to gateway page and login through the wifi network it creates.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=mp_s_a_1_sc_1?qid=1463935093&sr=8-1-spell&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Hoodoo+trip+mate+nano
A Wireless Travel Router is what you need. This will bridge the campus wifi to your own private wifi. All of your wireless devices will appear to the campus as a single wifi device. You can then connect your notebook, phone, sonos, etc. to the private wifi side while still retaining internet access.
You should check your school's AUP to make sure this is OK to do.
I might look into that.
I found another one on Amazon with more reviews and also cheaper. Do you think this will also work?
https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
Check out the HooToo travel routers. The basic one here is good up to 4TB and the higher models have other features that aren't really related to the NAS portion. The only thing is that your devices would have to connect to this hotspot to share the NAS.
FireTV stick and a TripMate Nano <$60 USD for the win.

Although I totally disagree with your statement check this out. It would work I think. Or you could get what they used to call a wireless gaming adapter that turns wifi to Ethernet.
[](HooToo Wireless Travel Router, USB Port, High Performance- TripMate Nano (Not a Hotspot) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ig.uybW59YAN6)
I'm not saying get this one, if you travel frequently you might want to consider one of these.
I know this does nothing for your current situation, sorry.
I just use one of these and put it in bridge mode.
I would just get a hootoo tripmate nano if you just want basic file serving at low wattage. it does DLNA (no transcoding) with it accessible via Roku Media Player.

I wasn't able at first either because they didn't have available wifi. But then I found one of these lying around next to my desk and nothing was plugged in it. So I bought this little router and have been able to play no problem. So long as I don't torrent or watch porn, the IT guys don't give a fuck.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_MWHCzb5STSF6M
This guy works great as well and is less than half the price from the same manufacturer. No battery pack though
there's a bunch of 'travel routers'
here's one - https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6

This one is $20. It's tiny. No one would ever notice it. Name the wifi network iPhone or something like that and you'll be golden. Also you won't have to mess around with your Chromebook every time you want to connect a device.
Interesting idea. I have no idea how this would perform when trying to check in via your phone, but my solution would be:
Or if you just want a record of it and don't need to check in remotely, just get any cheap camera that can record on microSD with decent wide angle lens and hit record before you leave.

This is what I use:
https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1498692158&sr=8-4&keywords=hootoo+travel+router
Runs off micro USB so I don't have to worry about how to power it when I'm in another country really. I just run it off my battery pack if I have to. It works well with hotel portals. Works perfect with the hotels Ethernet connection (although many hotels nowadays have Wifi only). It's only 2.4ghz wifi-n so the highest speed you can every possibly get is like 70mb/s. The range is pretty much like the size of your room. You can plug in a USB drive to pull files and stuff if you need to like a media server. I used that part like once, when I first tested it to see if it works LOL
Grab a retractable cat5e cable while you're at it since most hotels don't even supply that cable nowadays and you should be good for the most part.
This seems easy and cheap. Like perhaps this one?
HooToo
I’m not recommending this specifically, but a device link this will let you connect to the office pvlan WiFi and rebroadcast as a standard WiFi network. Also has a wired port, if that is an option.
They are designed for small groups in shared spaces / hotels, so you may not get good performance all the time, but for your presentation, it’s probably be fine.
As the building doesn’t seem to pitch a fit about hot spotting, I don’t think they’d had an issue here either.
Note: This is still a hack. There are recommendations to work with your shared space provider. That is the “right” choice. These are useful for other scenarios though.
It should! Sounds pretty much the same as the hotel logins. There are a bunch out there, but I grabbed this one.
HooToo Wireless Travel Router, USB Port, High Performance- TripMate Nano (Not a Hotspot) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_61G9BbPFAPTBE
Do you need it plugged directly into Ethernet? I have this travel adapter that turns Ethernet into a WiFi router/hotspot. (If we knew more about your situation we could probably give better suggestions)
There's a cheap, easy way around the redirect/sign in problem. Bring a travel router. I own the hootoo tripmate elite and I bring it and my chromecast on vacation all the time
Here's a link to the nano version. It's cheaper than the elite because it doesn't have a battery for charging but it should be enough to get your roku going.
HooToo Wireless Travel Router, USB Port, High Performance- TripMate Nano (Not a Hotspot) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_CTwtzb2JN2H73
You can pm me about it if you want
Hope everything goes well
Edit: just to be clear what you do is plug this in and use an app on your phone to connect the hootoo to the existing hospital guest network and accept the terms/enter your room number or whatever. The hootoo will create its own network that you will connect your roku to
Found it even cheaper on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6
You need a Hootoo travel router. They are very handy.
https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1539264120&sr=1-4&keywords=hootoo
Ok thanks for the info! I'll do some more research tomorrow but this have given me a huge starting point. I wasn't ever thinking of USB 3.0, but would just do 2.0.
I found something like this but as far as I know it only supports USB mass storage. The main goal is something similar to this, but with a keyboard, and the thumb drive was a afterthought.
I might mess around with the esp32's and see what I can do. I understand what you're saying, but I unfortunately don't think I have the skills right now, but it will still be a fun learning experience.
I use a HooToo Tripmate, and love it for this purpose. You can plug in any size flash drive or hard drive and it creates a little wifi hotspot to stream movies or files without need for Internet. However if you're in a place with wired Internet such as a hotel it can kill two birds with one stone and act as a fully functional router, too.
It also powers through my Mophie so I can confirm that you can just throw it in a backpack and have it run for a while, even with no plugs.
How to share a paid WiFi connection
Now, that is just a guide that is using a specific brand router. Each brand will be different but they are all pretty close on how you set it.
RAVPower Filehub Travel Router
HooToo Wireless Travel Router
travel wifi? I have been looking for one for travel as well.
I had a similar problem with hotel single MAC connections, I ended up using a portable router to set up a wireless LAN for my devices.

>I'm looking for something very lightweight (usb) so that I can connect my laptop and ipad to the same network. The purpose is to use an app on my iPad to control software on my laptop. I do not need nor want this connection to have internet access. The reason I need an ad-hoc connection instead of just using my home wifi network is because I travel and need to use this configuration when I don't have a public wifi network available.
You can use any router with wireless connectivity of any kind to achieve what you want. A cheap travel router with wireless capabilities would work.
Just create a SSID on this travel router, and have your laptop and ipad connect to this SSID at the same time. If you have DHCP enabled, they'll both be on the same subnet and can talk to each other, whether or not the router is connected to the Internet.
Something like this would work fine, and its only $22:
https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6
I just bought a hootoo tripmate nano, it's a small USB powered router, it can do exactly what you want, it can connect to a wired or wireless network and it creates his own wifi network to accept up to 5 devices. I paid 25$ CAD on amazon for it.
I will be using it in a different scenario, I'm using it to have wifi in my car for all passengers.
It can also accept a USB drive and will share it via smb or their app (ios and android) and play the files from there. It says Chromecast is supported as well. But I haven't tried Chromecast just yet.

https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Wireless-Performance-TripMate-Hotspot/dp/B00HZWOQZ6
Here is the mobile version of your link
You can screen mirror without internet, but not cast. You still need a network both are connected to - it just doesn't require internet connection.
A travel router will work and is reasonably cheap.
