Introduction/Acquisition:

I started my GYW journey w/Wolverine 1K’s and after multiple Red Wings, Danners, and Trumans, I got bit by the Alden bug with my Brown CXL Indy chukkas. I decided to sell off some boots and trim down my rotation a bit more to help scratch that Alden itch. I had a few boots in mind to complement the brown CXL chukkas:

• Dark brown wingtip or tanker boot - pretty set on the B+M Tobacco Reverse Chamois Wingtip
  
• Natural or tan smooth or scotch/alpine grain wingtip or tanker boot (whichever model I didn’t get in the dark brown color)
  
• Snuff suede plain/perforated cap toe or wingtip - this could come later as my Red Wing Hawthorne Muleskinner Blacksmiths sort of filled this color need for now, although admittedly a much more rugged boot.
  
  As Alden yearly price increases are now pushing boots upwards of $600+, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the second hand/used market, since most of the boots above aren’t readily available in my size or are on a 4-6 month preorder wait.
  
  Now I already have Indys so I wanted to avoid getting another Indy model and was actually looking at Alden of Madison’s Choco Suede Tanker which they did have in my size ready to ship. But at $634, I just couldn’t pull the trigger without waiting to see if something would pop up on the B/S/T, eBay, or StyleForum.
  
  To my luck, a pair of the LeatherSoul x Alden Choco Suede Ultimate Indys popped up on eBay in my 10.5D TruBalance size, unworn and new in box. I shot an offer and seller accepted and just received them today.

  Since my last Alden purchase, I’ve done a bit more reading and first-hand sizing. It appears my feet aren’t as wide as I thought and my Bannock measures 10.5D on my left and right smack dab in the middle of a 10.5/11 D/E width. I’ve mentioned it in my other posts and I’ve posted on the Manufacturer Last Sizing Thread, but a 10.5D Barrie fits me the best while a 10.5D TruBalance is a touch roomier, but not unbearable. These fit a bit better than my Indy chukkas, most likely due to be a full height boot, giving me some more eyelets to lace + tighten up and gives me the flexibility to wear thin to heavy weight socks, though dress socks might be too thin. The suede is also pretty forgiving, though I’m sure a 10D would likely be too snug for my foot.
  
  
  Construction:
  
  
  No complaints. The 360 degree storm welt is clean and the stitching all looks solid. Love the nap of the suede and the slight variation in color based on how the nap is sitting. My chukkas have the Alden commando sole as well and it is quickly becoming my favorite in terms of comfort, grip, and appearances. Much more comfortable than the Dainite my CXL Trumans were on, the full commando my waxed flesh Trumans were on, and the nitrile soles on my Red Wings. Clean and subtle enough to not feel too rugged either for year-round wear.
  
  The chocolate suede has so many different color representations in photos, I was a little worried at what they’d look like in person. Some seemed REALLY deep and rich chocolate, while some bordered on gray. The pictures from the eBay listing made them look almost like tobacco reverse chamois and even shades of snuff that I had seen. I’d say in person, my pair falls right in-between the dark rich brown and the gray, and LeatherSoul’s pictures aren’t TOO far off the actual color in my opinion.
  
  Conclusion:
  
  With these in rotation, these will likely check off my first bullet in my list above, although if someone offered me a trade straight up for the reverse chamois wingtips or an alpine grain tanker, I’d probably oblige (wink, wink). As I’ve handled more Aldens (especially the sleeker lasts), I can’t unsee the more roundedness of the TruBalance last. That said, no matter what, the dark brown boots were going to be most rugged/casual boot in my (future) rotation, so no real complaints. I know I should just start wearing them right away, but I’m about to order some Saphir Suede Renovateur and the Saphir Invulner Waterproofing Spray or Tarrago Nano Spray (Can anyone comment on the differences between the Saphir Invulner vs the Tarrago Nano Spray?) to protect from the Seattle wet weather.

Hope I'm not too late, but don't use any sort of leather lotion or creme conditioner. It mostly just looks dirty, it doesn't really look dry, but you can judge that better in person. I have some experience cleaning different kinds of leather (deerskin suede, lambskin, vegetable tanned leather, etc.), and from that I'd recommend one of the water based suede cleaners like Ugg Sheepskin Cleaner and Conditioner, which I've used (sheepskin, peccary, whatever, cleaners aren't that specific) or Jason Markk, which looks good, but I haven't used it. The Ugg cleaner link is to Zappos; it's 8 dollars and ships free. The Jason Markk stuff is twice the cost, and Amazon req. $35 min. for free shipping. If you go the Jason Markk route, just get the 8 oz. bottle I linked rather than the 4 oz. with brush for the same cost. A little brush should not cost 8 bucks in a kit.

Finally, since you're a kid and even 8 bucks might be more than you want to spend. A drop of baby shampoo or a drop (really, just a drop!) of dish soap in a quarter cup of lukewarm water will probably work almost as well as the cleaners above. Use a soft nail brush (ask your mom), thick rag, terry cloth towel, or spare sock inside out to lather and gently scrub. Don't drench the leather or it'll shrink and stiffen up. Air dry. Put on the gloves a few times as it dries. Brush again when dry.

Also, It's definitely peccary or imitation peccary. (I had to search to just to check if that was even a thing.) Pigskin has a slightly different follicle pattern. Carpincho looks likes lots of little small spots or scabs. If you're curious whether they're imitation or not, look closely at the the little dots. They're small holes where the hair follicles grew from. If they're just embossed on, leather lotion or the like might swell the leather and mess up the look. I only bring it up so you don't mess up the embossing if that's what it is; who cares if it's not real peccary. Carpincho, aka capybara, is just a giant, hairy South American rat, and peccaries are cute little L. American pigs. You seem really excited about it; that's sweet.

So I've owned three pairs of the Roshe Ones and I wear them all the time.

My last pair lasted about 8-9 months of consistent wear. I'll say that these shoes will last/look good for much, much longer if you invest in some sort of sneaker cleaner. I use Shoe MGK, but there are others for sure.

The set I got came with a bottle and a small brush. With about 5 minutes of cleaning I could restore them to a like new condition. I do this for all my sneakers, and it really can help with longevity.

The biggest factors to consider:
1.) Color: Mine are black on white so easier to clean. I'd imagine very light fabric would be trickier. The black/black/white sole is the way to go anyway ;)

2.) Where you walk: I live in TX, so it's pretty dry and I don't have to walk in snow. If you trek to work or school in shit weather everyday they are obviously going to wear out quicker.

I have the Brooks Brothers kit with the cedar stand that is ridiculously overpriced, but I wanted it badly anyway and bought it as a present to myself on my birthday and got it and enjoy the hell out of it. With that said, although I enjoy the kit, the little Kiwi kit you can buy in the little bag from Walmart/Target is perfectly fine and will suit your needs completely. I used that for years and liked the stuff. Kiwi still makes great polish. Since this is r/frugal I would definitely say that is the route to go. Here's a link on Amazon to what I'm talking about. It's $15 and free shipping with Prime. That's for black and brown. Can't go wrong there.

I bought the FootFitter 2-Way Shoe Stretcher and also this solution for stretching leather. The first pair I tested them with so far were some MizMooz leather flats that I had purchased on sale, online about a year before that just didn't turn out to fit well but I had kept them in my closet because I loved them. I was finally ready to get rid of them and figured nothing to lose...I was amazed this worked so well. I did notice the stretching solution caused the dye in the leather to run in a few spots inside the shoes, but luckily not on the outside.

Clean it with saddle soap to start to see if that helps. I personally like Pink Miracle which has saddle soap in it and is liquid so it’s easy, but you can get a tin of solid saddle soap at Walmart/Target. Tarrago dye comes with a prep liquid that helps remove old dye (apply with a scratchy pad). It comes in several dozen colors with nice, rich color payoff after only 1-2 coats (but apply more like 4-5 coats) of sponge application.

start with just the brush, a good amount of dirt will simply wipe off suede and nubuck

if it's still there, use the eraser. use a nice eraser from a decent mechanical pencil. stay away from those hard cheap ones.

if you use an eraser, there will be a bit of flaking left over. use the brush to get everything going in the same direction.

this will take care of most dirt/dust ('dry')

took these for my euro trip during summer and an asia trip during winter. Love these shoes. The gum sole on these should be easy to keep clean, but I used the shoe cleaner by pink miracle for the rest of the shoe. So our cleaning lady accidentally put my rep Chanel espadrilles in the donation bin a few months ago and last week I received a replacement from the same seller (AliExpress guy I added on whatsapp). They were the same size (37) but fit tighter and a tad shorter than my old ones :cries: so I went to Amazon to get a 4 way shoe tree to stretch them and came across this spray. OMG it was like a miracle! I sprayed in and out, put in the trees and left overnight. This morning they were perfect! Even loose enough to wear with thin no-show socks.

Yep it works. It won't keep your shoes bone dry if you dunk them in water but if you spray down the outside of your shoes with it really well then let them dry for 24 hours. It definitely will keep the outside dry. I spray down my shoelaces too and let them dry separately. I bought this stuff. I'd personally reapply occasionally but I don't know if that's strictly necessary. It's certainly not a scam though.

There is heavier duty stuff out there if you want something that will really make your boots/shoes super waterproof instead of "water resistant" though. Just look at reviews.

Here's the one I got. I have no idea where it lies on the spectrum in terms of effectiveness, but it works pretty well. Not waterproof by any means but it'll keep water off unless it's absolutely downpouring or you submerge the shoe in water.

The coating works by changing the surface free energy (I think) and loses effectiveness via friction and force. As such, the greater the volume and velocity of water that's contacting the shoe, the less likely it is to be effective. It'll also wear off faster in high wear areas such as where your shoe creases on the vamp.

Oh that’s awesome, I was considering putting these inserts on them. I’m also wondering if I should get something like this to protect the sole. Did yours get scratched at all? I find it so weird that all these super expensive shoes don’t have very durable soles. I don’t want them to get all messed up.

I know it has mixed reviews, but if you're working on leather, this is the best I've used. I used to work at a shoe store and this would take permanent marker off our counter. We used to clean everyone's shoes after they bought a pair to get them to buy the cleaner.

I've been eyeing the brown suede 1K Miles recently. Your rust ones looks great.

Are the boots unlined on the inside, meaning it's just suede without any other leather stitched to it? Does the leather around the ankle ever feel thin or flimsy, especially when worn or taken off?

If you're worried about the longevity of the leather soles, I recommend finding a local reputable cobbler to put on rubber half sole guards. I'm in the US and rubber guards cost me about $38 for a cobbler to install them.

I live in the city and walk a lot, so the rubber guards really help. Otherwise, the leather soles on my shoes would have been eaten through and I would have to pay about $80-100 for a full leather resole.

If you're worried about keeping the leather clean from stains/water, I've read good things about this suede protector.

Also, keep shoe trees in your boots when you're not wearing them. They'll help soak up excess sweat/deodorize them and keep the boots in shape.

A simple suede protector that will waterproof the shoe should work. I currently use a bottle I picked up at Bostonian a few years back without much issue on both my sand suede CDB and suede bucks (hell, last weekend I found out that my suede bucks are not only water proof now but also White Russian proof...) Though I have heard good reviews about this product. Also, pick up a suede eraser and brush to clean up the occasional and certainly inevitable nick/scratch/stain.

I've been asked if I put on suede spray for these three recent shoes that that I bought: derby buck, brown cap toe oxford, and a Crepe sole (cheaper) chelsea boot.

Since they're all well under $100, even more so as I have a 25% discount code, I told someone that I don't bother, but I would if they were $200 to $500 shoes.

However, I did order a suede cleaning kit by Kiwi, and it seems to work well for these shoes.

For the most part, it's important to keep these shoes dry and avoid in (known) wet weather. However, minor water stains are oftentimes unavoidable, and the suede cleaning kit seems to do a satisfactory job.

I'm wondering if suede protector just isn't worth it. On the other hand, I regularly put rubber cement on the soles to avoid the soles wearing down, so the base of the shoes (too cheap to re-sole) last far longer than normal.

Also I got the gum sole one, they are the same thing just a different color. If you want water resistant, why dont you look at the LL Bean Duck Boots. I'm in Atlanta, it doesnt really snow here, but I have them for when it rains and they are awesome.

Looks like they're suede, so I recommend waterproofing them and then buying something to clean up the fabric.

For waterproofing I use Penguin's water and stain repellent. It's done me pretty well. No discoloration so long as you follow directions, and a can will last you years.
The waterproofing won't make them boots or anything, but they've saved me in a flash flood. My shoes got completely soaked after I mistakenly submerged them, but after careful drying my shoes turned out unharmed.

And for cleaning I also use Penguin's suede cleaner, which also lasts a long time.
I'm sure you could use another brand for either of these things, but these are what I use.

Hands down, if it's smooth leather, condition your item before you use it. I'm sure you know, but conditioning lubricates, aids in water resistance, scratching, and scuffing.

Yeah, I'd try the cleaner. I've seen it get grease and blood out, and most recently mustard. It's constantly surprising me. I'd actually get our Rufus Styles kit if I were you because it comes with a harder brush, and the cleaner. I have always used Kiwi brand stuff. They sell various kits on Amazon. You will want a brush, buffing cloth (chamois) and foam applicators. Here is one that comes with black and brown polish as well:

You can find conditioner separately. My routine is to brush them first to get off as much dirt/dust etc as possible, then use a damp sponge or cloth to clean them more thoroughly. Dry them off with a clean cloth and them let them sit a few minutes to air dry a bit more. Apply conditioner (be careful not to use too much), wipe off any excess, and let sit for about 30 minutes. Next apply the polish with one of the applicator foams. Let it set for about an hour to soak in and dry, then brush off with your brush and finally buff to a shine with the chamois.

Both those polishes are exactly the kind of stuff I'd try out. I use Kiwi polish, but these look very similar. However I'd highly recommend bringing your shoes to a cobbler in person- they may let you try it for free.

Unfortunately saddle soap probably won't work- it can't put colour back into your shoe, only remove superficial marks.

I'm somewhat put off by that, but the stuff I used to use worked OK. I just had to keep up with the coating. Maybe the stuff I bought didn't have the lye and soap in it? Maybe it deteriorated the jacket faster because of the lye? I don't know as it doesn't fit me any more.

I'm sure Johnson's paste wax would work too. Sno-seal as silicone oil in it and it works as advertised.

I looked in an old 1907 book "Henley's twentieth century formulas, recipes and processes" and didn't see anything saddle soap related.

I got this for my suede shoes and it works well! Suede brush, suede eraser, waterproofing spray, and conditioner. I haven't tried the conditioner but the rest of it works great

Kiwi is often recommended as an intro polish kit. This was my first kit, I just received another for Christmas so I will update my comment with that when I get home later. Kiwi works just fine, Lincoln is another brand that I think gets recommended frequently. Just make sure you clean and condition before polishing.

• Never use a wire brush or polish on suede or nubuck. (Some suede brushes do have wire in the center, which is specifically made for use on suede).

As for shoetrees, I don't think you'll really need them for this style boot. But it couldn't hurt if you're really worried.

I might look for a more refined dress lace than the ones already on there.

After a quick search , these seem to be the only shoes Nike labeled “water resistant”.

If you want waterproof sneakers, it might be best to look into some sort of protection spray, like this. I’d make sure to do some research though first before diving in to make sure you don’t ruin your shoes.

I used this to waterproof my Uggs. Water now beads off of them. :) Granted I haven't done gotten them wetter than flicking water at them to test the water proofing and light trekking across puddles to the garbage can, but it seems to work very well. I can only recommend for suede, as I tried it on my nubuck shoes and it didn't seem to make a difference, but that may just be me so I'm not sure.

This is your best bet, I heard crep protect and other products sometimes cause discoloration.

You could also smooth that out with some conditioner, wax, or leather honey. I have the same saddle leather case on my iPhone X and a product called Leather Honey worked very nicely on it.

It's a gentle cleaning soap with companion brush that will clean gunk off sneakers and boots. I used it to get mud out of some sneakers made with absorbent fabric and some mud and grass off some workboots also.

This kit has worked well for me. I just used the water protectant on my new Quoddy suede boots and they didn't alter the color at all. Comes with an eraser bar and cleaning solution as well.

Things like Sno-Seal will waterproof them, as long as you follow their directions for when to reapply. You can also use a leather protecting spray like this. I personally prefer Sno-Seal because I have a better idea of what's in it (beeswax, mostly).

Otherwise, regular cleaning and conditioning (whenever the leather feels dry, looks light, gets dirty, or every few months) should work out well!

Use this stuff. I use it for my suede shoes, and it's fantastic.

I occasionally got caught in the rain while wearing them, but part of my cleaning process involves using this waterproofer to protect my shoes.

Depending on how pricey and/or loved they are, my go to is Bedos. Dude does insane work with shoes, but comes with an accompanying price tag.

For my own suede shoes I use a good suede shampoo and suede brush to get out most of the crap, followed by some suede conditioner. Saphir is sold all over the place, hanger project links were just the handiest to find.

After that you can also look into (optional) using some tarrago nanospray to semi-waterproof and stain-proof them. That stuff is magic.

negative. check your local champs/finishline/footlocker and ask if they have a suede eraser for suede shoes. they should know what you're talking about. if not you can always check out NB's suede cleaning kit.

the eraser should have a side for suede and a side for nubuck. if you do decide to get it, the best way to clean suede/nubuck with the kit would be to brush > erase > brush again.

Will Kiwi Saddle Soap dry out the leather in my shoes or help keep it hydrated? Trying to maximize the life of my less-than-top-quality-leather dress shoes.

Renovating Repair Cream can be used to fill the void. Just make sure that you only apply it to the damaged area.

I wouldn't wear ALL white. That could look a bit tacky. But anything else would be fine. Literally white vans, black pants/jeans/joggers, and a white shirt. Anything will work

Tarrago is a commonly recommended​ brand in /r/goodyearwelt. It's been recommended specifically for suede before.

Those are nubuck/suede not regular leather, don't do some of the recommendations here or you're going to ruin them. They sell suede cleaners specifically for this type of shoes. I have a similar that I clean with a suede eraser and brush the eraser removes the stain and the brush restores the nap (texture).

Look into Tarrago Hightech Nanoprotector Spray. It's regularly recommended over at /r/goodyearwelt, the subreddit for high quality footwear. I've used it on my roughout and suede boots, and it hasn't affected the color at all. As other have said, you may have to reapply it occasionally, depending on the amount and type of wear the jacket will see.

That being said, suede is not as fragile as some make it out to be. It's actually quite tough, hence why many work boots use roughout or suede, and you don't have to worry about weird creasing you can get from "smoothout" leathers.

look around where you found it in the car to see if anything stained part of the car or what could have possibly leaked. i would try a suede cleaning kit that has an eraser and brush (no chemicals) and see if that could get it off. i think Jason Markk or Kiwi make an affordable kit for this. I think Target carries the Kiwi one in store too.

Pick up one of those bar/brush sets (like this one http://www.amazon.com/New-Balance-Suede-Cleaning-System/dp/B000IBIIFK ) and try that out before trying any of the spray cleaners places sell. I've always had trouble with discoloration from the sprays.
