It all depends on what your husband likes. The vast majority of coffee drinkers love Keurig machines as they're super easy, quick, single serve, no mess, and there are unlimited options of different K-Cups.

If he likes regular coffee or flavored coffee, get him a Keurig machine like this K55 on Amazon or check out the Best Selling Single Serve Brewers. Keurig machines are quick, easy, and no mess. I use mine every day. Yes, I have other machines for fancy drinks but the Keurig is the best for regular, every day coffee, especially when I'm busy. I prefer iced coffee so I have a Keurig that makes hot or cold coffee, but most machines are hot only. There are thousands of different kinds of K-Cups out there and some that serve beverages other than coffee like hot cocoa, chocolate milk, cider, all different kinds of teas, and I think I even saw some lemonade or some type of lemon drink. If your husband likes mocha Frappuccinos, he would probably like Starbucks mocha latte K-Cups and Gevalia mocha latte K-Cups. Keurig works well for all different types of preferences.

If he likes lattes, espresso, mocha, or other flavored coffee-based drinks, check out the NesCafe line of Nespresso and line of Dolce Gusto machines like the Dolce Gusto Genio. The Dolce Gusto line is much simpler than the Nepresso machines and has more flavored drinks. If your husband likes mocha, you could get these. I have the Genio along with my Keurig and a few other coffee machines. The Dolce Gusto machines are great but they are more for fancy drinks, not regular coffee. I should also add the cups for Dolce Gusto machines are far more expensive per serving than K-Cups, there are far less flavors/options versus K-Cups, and they don't sell them in stores so you have to buy them online.

If he already has a Keurig or wants something a bit fancier, get him a French press like these on Amazon.

If he likes cold/iced coffee, you could get him a cold brewer like this.

Remember, whenever you buy anything on Amazon, always use the Amazon Smile link and select a charity to donate to. To learn more abour Amazon Smile, click here or go here to learn how to change your charity. I personally use the Doug Flutie Foundation for Autism as my charity and it's worth checking out.

Not sure about you, but I don't use a ton of shelf stable stuff anymore. I have a big row of mason jars up high full of probably rancid gluten free flours and sugars from my pre-keto days :p They look cool, though!

Besides the three you mentioned: maybe nuts? Is there anything you go through fast enough that it won't need to be in the fridge or in a smaller, airtight, opaque container? For oils or vinegar that you go through fast enough, you could get pretty glass bottles with pour spouts. Actually, some olive oils come in really pretty bottles already.

What about coffee? I buy small, soft k-cups that use less plastic, so we actually keep regular and decaf coffee in wide mouth mason jars by the keurig. (this brand; they also are sold at Costco: https://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Compatible/dp/B007TGDXNO). Beans or ground coffee would be prettier than the cups, if you use that. If you aren't going through coffee pretty quickly, I don't recommend this, because gets stale.

There are more options if you're willing to do bigger jars than masons. Tea bags? I tried those in a wide mouth mason jar and they just don't fit very well. But a big wide canister with straight sides would hold tea bags pretty nicely if you either have enough of the same kind or don't mind digging through a jumble to find the flavor you're looking for.

Non-food things? Utensils? Measuring spoons? These would probably look best in the tall narrow jam jars (8 or 12oz) or the wide mouth pint or 1.5 pint jars. The straight sides look really nice.

Some friends of mine bought all Market Pantry (target store brand) canned goods. The label/branding is pretty simple, so it actually looked really clean and elegant when displayed on a bookshelf. If you use a lot of canned goods, this might be an option too and doesn't even require jars.

They do make Pike Place in K-Cups if you are interested.

https://www.amazon.com/Starbucks-Portion-Keurig-Brewers-K-Cups/dp/B00ELMAF6W/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1485998596&sr=8-2&keywords=pikes%2Bplace%2Bk-cups&th=1

When you say using your own coffee, do you mean just a different roaster, or literally your own coffee, as in, you roasted the coffee yourself? Either way though, right off the bat you must understand that Keurig machines are for convenience and not quality. I own a Keurig as well as other manual brew methods(V60, Chemex, Kalita, French Press, etc) and a $600 espresso machine (not to brag, but to show you the contrast in the coffee gear I own). I will admit that at times I don't feel like getting out my gear, boiling the water, weighing out my beans, and brewing the coffee. That is where the Keurig comes in.

To get a better quality cup out of a k-cup, select the smallest cup size on the machine. On my Keurig it is 4oz. Some might be 6oz. The reason why is that each k-cup only has so much coffee that can be extracted. When you select a bigger size cup, you're not really getting more coffee out of the k-cup, you're just over-extracting the coffee. That is why a 12oz cup from single k-cup on a Keurig compared to a tall cup of coffee at Starbucks tastes like water. The reality is that that k-cup can only really give you about 4oz-6oz. So actually what you need to do is use multiple k-cups. So for example, if you want a 12oz cup of coffee and your lowest setting is a 6oz, you're going to have to use 2 k-cups, or if its 4oz like mine, it'll be 3 cups. Get it? If you're looking to buy better K-cups, Peet's Coffee is actually the best. They actually put a lot of research getting the best out of a k-cup.

If you have your own beans, you're going to have to buy yourself a reusable k-cup. They are probably a ton of companies out there that make them. What you're going to have to do is test out on your own is how much coffee you can fit in a reusable k-cup and how fine or coarse you're going to need to grind it. Too much coffee or too fine of coffee will cause the Keurig to back up the reusable k-cup will explode. This actually happened to me a lot when I was trying to test out how I can get the perfect cup with a reusable k-cup.

Anyways, I hope this helps. If you have more questions, let me know!

This would be awesome...I'm a teacher and school starts back up soon...my middle schoolers will be much happier if I'm happier...and coffee in the morning makes me very happy! Haha.

I may have stalked you via your wishlist...I saw a lot of things that I loved! So I'm pretty sure we have similar interests. Classical music? Yes please! I teach choir! Definitely coffee! Crafty stuff! Also, the nest thermostat you have...I have one! I love it! I love being able to change the temp while away from home...or even if I'm nice and comfy sitting in the living room with my dog asleep on my lap!

u/0x6d1e · 2 pointsr/Coffee

Your basis is somewhat flawed -- what matters to end consumers is the cost-per-serving.

So lets standardize on an 8oz serving, which is the recommended output from a single K-cup.

Basis:

  • Amazon sells well-reviewed K-cups for $0.44 each; this is the cheapest K-cup supply I could find with positive reviews

  • Locally-roasted coffee of a generally acceptable quality costs ~$15 for a 12-oz bag (based on survey of local coffee providers in my area); which is $20/lb.

  • Water weighs about 29.574g per oz, making 8oz of water 236.592g

  • Assume that the operational costs are comparable for all methods (cost of equipment, cost to heat water, etc. etc.). This is probably not perfectly accurate but is reasonable for our exercise.

    K-cup vs. Pour-over:
    ====

Pour-over recipes generally look for a 14:1 to 17:1 water:coffee ratio by weight; to make this comparison most favorable to the K-cup, we'll use the 17:1 ratio.

With 236.592g of water, that means 13.91g of coffee, which is 32.6 servings per bag. To make the comparison as favorable as possible, we'll consider that you'll use that 0.6 servings somehow.

  • $20(lb) / 32.6(servings) = ~$0.613 per serving
  • $0.44(per serving) * 32.6(servings) = $14.344 per pound to match K-cup price

    K-cup vs. Autodrip:
    ====

Auto-drip recommends 60g of coffee per liter of water. A liter makes 4.22 eight-oz servings of coffee, meaning 14.21g of coffee per serving, which means 31.92 servings per pound of coffee.

  • $20(lb) / 31.92(servings) = ~$0.626 per serving
  • $0.44(per serving) * 31.92 = ~$14.045 per pound to match K-cup

    Conclusions:
    ====

  • If you're willing to buy inexpensive K-cups, it's cheaper than using premium coffee, but not by much; the quality difference exceeds the price difference.

  • If you can reduce your coffee bean costs to around $14/lb or less, you're saving money vs. K-cups; since you can get better coffee at $14/lb that what you'll get in a K-cup, it's fair to say that K-cups are more expensive than decent coffee

All in all, using premium coffee from a local roaster is a little more expensive than the cheapest reasonable K-cup option. However, you can get coffee of superior quality to the best K-cups for less money than you can buy the cheapest of the K-cups, which means that:

  1. If money is the main concern, buy reasonably good beans and auto-drip
  2. If convenience is the main concern, K-cup might be a reasonable choice
  3. You can have outstanding quality coffee for not much more than crummy K-cup coffee

tl;dr excellent coffee is more expensive than mediocre K-cup coffee, but not by much; decent coffee is cheaper than K-cups.

I love coffee!!!!!!!!!! My main port of awesomeness is my Keurig. I love that damn thing. The only downside is the fact that the pods are kinda spendy, but it makes a perfect cup every single time... to order. I don't have to worry about pots of coffee dying on a hot plate or in a carafe. Plus it's lazy. Little cleanup and I never have to boil water for tea or cocoa either.

I do miss my press though. If you have a really great set of beans the press brings out the best flavor.

K-cups!!

A company called GEESTA also makes lids. I think they fit a little better than the ReCaps, but both seem to work well.

For best results, the key is to grind the coffee fine and match the type of coffee to the types of capsule you use. I’ve had pretty good results with most of the dark coffees I like using high intensity capsules.

u/Cukimonster · 1 pointr/1200isplenty

The one I have, I can’t find anywhere. I found it on clearance for 25$ (marked down from 100$) and I pounced. It still uses pods , but the coffee is so much better. They have several that use the same kind of coffee, like this one.

But I have used other espresso makers that family and friends have. I feel like those are “real” espresso machines, but the coffee I use now tastes very close. No chemical or aftertaste. Of course, for those who can afford to purchase something better, I would. But as an affordable alternate to keurig, it’s definitely a better quality of coffee. 😊

u/dont_wear_a_C · 3 pointsr/CasualConversation

Not OP, but I used to drink generic, regular coffee with 2 creams, 2 sugars. After trying "better" coffee and playing around with the Keurig at work, you begin to appreciate the actual blends and boldness of coffees, whereas adding creamer and sugar actually ruined the taste(s) for me. Aka different blends, stronger roasts, etc etc.

Right now, my favorite coffee is San Francisco Bay Fog Chaser and it's delicious!

[These KCups] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005K4Q1YA/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_gL2Nub0JKTMBF) for my brand new Keurig!!! They're $9.66 with prime!
They would be very useful to me because KCups can get pretty expensive and coffee is simply amazing.

Thanks for the contest!

u/1stGenRex · 2 pointsr/dogecoin

Also, I'd recommend picking up some of these (they have smaller ones than the 80 count, if you want to try them out)

They look a bit different, but they work just as well as the other k-cups. The coffee is damn good too, for those that like a strong coffee, that's not bitter. I've had Fog Chaser and French Roast, and my wife and I both like them very much.

u/ReisaD · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This is 13.95 and prime so, you can gift someone else too! Yay! Or any book from my booklist would work like Invisable Monsters Remix by Chuck Palahniuk which is 13.05! :D Thank you for the contest!

u/fireline12 · 2 pointsr/Coffee

Get your K-Cups from Amazon, you can get them pretty cheap and in bulk. Personally I like San Francisco Bay Coffee's Fog Chaser blend. Nice bold cup, plus it's fair trade and the k-cup is biodegradable.

u/coinbank · 1 pointr/technology

Yea they did. I got a mesh k cup with my keurig as a gift and it won't brew. That was actually the reason I wanted one. Now it barely gets used. I did find some degradeable cups http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-OneCup-Coffees/dp/B007Y59HVM They send you a thin plastic container with the order to store the cups in. They come in biodegradable bags as well. Plus the coffee is pretty good 8)

u/neil_striker · 6 pointsr/Frugal

> Are you advocating for this to be a purely middle class sub?

No. I was thinking more along the lines of frugality is a means for personal joy and financial freedom. And r/frugal has become a bragging post on how not to spend money at all. Not cheapness, not frugality, but bragging. A display of anti-largess.

I'm feeling r/frugal should be a way for people to help each other see into life habits and change them. How showing me what was pulled out of a dumpster doesn't make me want to jump into a dumpster

And if someone thinks Kcups are too expensive at .70 each, I like the idea that this subreddit will help them find this option at .31 : http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-80-Count/dp/B007Y59HVM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376358171&sr=8-1&keywords=san+francisco+bay+k+cups

fear cuts deeper than words

Edit #1 - Replaced #1 #2, #9, #13, #15, edited some text, added bonuses

Okay, so a lot of my items are similar, or are kind of "flexing" the rules, but I will leave official rulings up to you. Here goes!

  1. Something Grey - Strip of magnesium - This actually just got gifted to me. This coal trash can is silver, which is basically grey :D

2)Something reminiscent of rain - Zen Garden - Flexing the rules. It's only related because it's a garden. An umbrella!! I don't have one of these, and I have no idea why.

  2. Food related - Pineapple corer/slicer

  3. On wishlist not for me (this is for my fiancee) - Apple Cider k-cups

  4. A book you should read - Everyone should have the Joy of Cooking

    6)Item less than a dollar - MP3

  5. Something related to cats - This is related because of that scene in "Christmas Vacation" where the cat gets electrocuted

  6. [Beautiful but not useful - Lego adoption of Brandenburg Gate](
    http://www.amazon.com/LEGO%C2%AE-Architecture-Brandenburg-Gate-21011/dp/B0050R0V3O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=E9RD1GO4V1KF&coliid=I22USNN7FC4LVL)

  7. Movie everyone should see once - Not on wishlist - Harlan County, USA. This documentary is nearly perfect in every sense of the word. This movie is so powerful, and so real, it's just unbelievable. One of my favorites. I always suggest it when someone asks "what documentary should I see?"

  8. Something useful when Zombies attack - Kinect Your Shape Fitness Evolved - You need to be able to Outwit, Outrun, and Outlast.

  9. Profound impact on life - Guitar. I really want to learn how to play, and my dad was going to teach me, but he passed before he was able to. It would mean a lot to share that passion with him even though he's already moved on

  10. Add-On Item - Cat6 cable!!!

  11. Most expensive item -It's actually the guitar, so I went with the 2nd most expensive which is a Logitech G19 keyboard Nope. It's actually this amp.

  12. Bigger than a bread box - Mizuno backpack

  13. Smaller than a golf ball - Not sure if a k-cup would count, but I threw it in there. If it doesn't count, I will find something else It doesn't. Here's some ship and anchor cufflinks I really want for my wedding :)

  14. Something that smells wonderful - Kind of cheating, but a different k-cup. Donut shop coffee is the BEST. Changed to a different beverage. I have a horrible addiction to this stuff, and it smells wonderful (to me)

  15. SFW Toy - Legos are a toy!! :D

  16. Helpful going back to school - I listed the Zen Garden again because it's helpful to have something peaceful when going back to school

  17. Something related to your current obsession - I am OBSESSED with Lorde. I have stated this many times over the last week.

  18. Something amazing/awe inspiring - SERIOUSLY. LOOK AT THIS FUCKING CHAIR. THIS MOTHERFUCKER RIGHT HERE? THIS SHIT FOLDS UP SO YOU CAN CARRY IT. NOT GOOD ENOUGH? SHIT, SON. THIS BITCH HAS TWO ARMRESTS FOR YOUR LAZY ASS. STILL BITCHING? GUESS WHAT DICKLIPS, THIS BITCH HAS TWO CAN HOLDERS AND A FUCKING COOLER. YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO GET YOUR BITCH ASS UP TO GET A DRINK, BAM, YOU ALREADY GOT ONE. IT EVEN HAS A POUCH TO HOLD YOUR OTHER SHIT, IF ALL OF THIS ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH. YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS CHAIR.

BONUS #1 - I looked through your reddit history (not very hard, but I did look), and came up empty, so I'll just post something later that might fit.

BONUS #2 - These blankets are made in Oregon, and look SUPER cool. Not on my WL (I have more than enough blankets), but I really like them.

I may attempt the bonuses tomorrow, we will see. This is definitely a placeholder until rulings on some items are made. Fix'd :D

If, like me, you're not picky about your coffee, but you like the convenience of a Keurig, you can get 80 K-Cups for $26. The coffee actually has great reviews, too.

Consider the SF Bay Fog Chaser. It's the best kcup I found where the taste isn't so compromising, and is (supposedly) environmentally friendly!

u/Waja_Wabit · 2 pointsr/todayilearned

FYI, you can buy delicious, cheap, completely biodegradable k cups on Amazon. There are also plenty of recyclable brands out there as well.

u/RBXChas · 2 pointsr/keto

I used the reusable K-cup thingie in my home Keurig, and it never worked right after that (we ended up replacing it shortly thereafter). I thought it was just bad timing, so I used it in our office one, and we had to buy a new office one then, too. I don't know why, but I had terrible luck with those.

I buy San Francisco Bay K-cups. I first saw them at Costco (which no longer sells them), loved them, and kept buying through Amazon. They are working towards 100% biodegradable packaging. Their K-cups don't have plastic on the bottom (just a plastic ring), and the bags that hold the K-cups I believe are compostable. My favorite flavors are Fog Chaser and French Roast: https://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Compatible/dp/B007Y59HVM

jokes aside, not really. there are different kinds of brewers but they each brew their own cups. the rivo makes espressos if you want that. i would just get a regular brewer and buy the cups that are basically faux cappuccinos like these http://www.amazon.com/Gevalia-Espresso-Packets-Caramel-Macchiato/dp/B00FPIVBJG

this is true! I found these and they are sooo good. They also come in other flavors like hazelnut and caramel. They are just .44 a cup so a pretty good deal!!

So there are 2 kinds of Nespresso pods, the original line and the vertuoline. The vertuoline is still patented and you can only get it from Nespresso. There are lots of suppliers for the original line devices like so:

Why don't more people just use stuff like this in their Keurig? They're just as convenient, cheaper, 97% biodegradable, fare trade, and, in my experience, just better tasting than the vast majority of K-cup varieties.

u/misterchief117 · 2 pointsr/ThriftStoreHauls

You lucky duck.

I can't be too jealous because I also found a Kuerig at my local Goodwill. It was 12 bucks and pretty much brand new. I think it's the Keurig B40 which only has two cup sizes, which is annoying since they're both small...

The one thing that bugs me about these machines is the fact that they produce so much waste. I ended up getting these K-cups because not only were they the best deal, but they are also bio-degradable. Not only that, it's actually damn good coffee:

I just bought these for the first time since I'm sick of cleaning the reusable and refillable cups. They're cheap and better for the environment, but I bought the Keurig for convenience. So what I just bought is good. Supposedly only the foil lid isn't compassable.

I mixed Michigan Cherry Dekuyper with Bell's Oarsman last night, it tasted like a light soda. Not bad.

I have work until ~5PM, then errand running until probably 9PM.

After that, I might use my Keurig to make a caramel macchiato and put some Vanilla Cinnamon Bailey's in it.

Or I'll just have a beer. I'm going to the bar tomorrow, so I'm pretty much at my limit for "allowed number of days per week to have a booze."

Anyone with a Keurig, buy San Francisco Bay K cups. They're made from organic materials and are biodegradable. Good coffee too.

There are alternatives to the plastic cups. We use to order these when we still used our Keurig, and I think they have a better taste than most others.

See, when I buy compostable k-cups I'm talking about these. Do they still have an issue breaking down? Seems like it's mostly just coffee and filter.

We use these biodegradable pods:

San Francisco Bay OneCup, Fog Chaser, 80 Single Serve Coffees https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007Y59HVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kkp5xbRPV1H5R

We buy them at Costco and my coffee snob DH enjoys them ;)

You can also get a reusable keurig filter and fill it with your own coffee. You just have to not overstuff it, and wash it of course!

Did you want coffee or espresso? On Amazon, you can get $0.35 cents of kcup coffees. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HS6FQRQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

K-Cups. Buy him a huge box of K-Cups.

Edit: these are the best price/taste ratio and are biodegradable.

You can get 80 count K-Cups from San Francisco Bay Coffee It is 35 cents per k-cup, which isn't too bad. I did the math and found I'd be spending about $20 more a year than what I spent when using the typical ground coffee picked up at the grocery store.

According to the FAQ on the Amazon ordering page for the Starbucks capsules, these can be recycled with Nespresso pods.. Scroll down for the FAQ

> I decided to see if prices are still similar, as the article is 3 years old. I found Black Silk on Amazon. Assuming they are still 8 grams per cup, the 24-pack, at $0.88 per cup, works out to $49.89/lb of coffee. If you buy the 72-pack, it's $0.62 per cup, which is $35.15/lb of coffee.

I get these, that work out to about $0.36 per cup.

The resin that green mountain uses in their cartridges isn't recyclable or biodegradable.

These are and they're a lot cheaper. If you use a keurig 2.0 you may need a clip to bypass the DRM.

There's a company out in california that makes k-kup compatible cups using all biodegradable materials. And they are cheaper than store brand generics. They come out to 37 cents a cup instead of 50 for store brand and 75 for keurig brand

That sounds about right for k-cups. That's about 75 cents per cup.

I usually pay between .50 and .60 when I buy k-cups.

You can get them for as cheap as 36 cents each on amazon

Of course, it's still more expensive than grinding and brewing your own coffee (which you can also do anyway with reusable K-Cups), but the convenience factor is what you're paying for.

  1. K-Cups for when I don't have time for the aeropress. As, I tend to move slowly waking up at 4:30am.

  2. If I have time, I will always use my aeropress. I use the inversion method, and it is phenomenal. Sadly, at work, all we have is a keurig.

  3. Thank you for the contest.

$29.75 for 80 San Francisco Bay Fog Chaser cups is tough to beat.

It's good stuff for Keurig coffee, and the cups are 97% biodegradable, so you don't have to feel like a schmuck for wasting a shit ton of plastic.
