Not sure about you, but I don't use a ton of shelf stable stuff anymore. I have a big row of mason jars up high full of probably rancid gluten free flours and sugars from my pre-keto days :p They look cool, though!

Besides the three you mentioned: maybe nuts? Is there anything you go through fast enough that it won't need to be in the fridge or in a smaller, airtight, opaque container? For oils or vinegar that you go through fast enough, you could get pretty glass bottles with pour spouts. Actually, some olive oils come in really pretty bottles already.

What about coffee? I buy small, soft k-cups that use less plastic, so we actually keep regular and decaf coffee in wide mouth mason jars by the keurig. (this brand; they also are sold at Costco: https://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Compatible/dp/B007TGDXNO). Beans or ground coffee would be prettier than the cups, if you use that. If you aren't going through coffee pretty quickly, I don't recommend this, because gets stale.

There are more options if you're willing to do bigger jars than masons. Tea bags? I tried those in a wide mouth mason jar and they just don't fit very well. But a big wide canister with straight sides would hold tea bags pretty nicely if you either have enough of the same kind or don't mind digging through a jumble to find the flavor you're looking for.

Non-food things? Utensils? Measuring spoons? These would probably look best in the tall narrow jam jars (8 or 12oz) or the wide mouth pint or 1.5 pint jars. The straight sides look really nice.

Some friends of mine bought all Market Pantry (target store brand) canned goods. The label/branding is pretty simple, so it actually looked really clean and elegant when displayed on a bookshelf. If you use a lot of canned goods, this might be an option too and doesn't even require jars.

Cafe (Ca Phe) Sua Da is a really common Vietnamese drink that incorporates condensed milk with coffee that often has chicory as an adjunct. Cafe Du Monde is the most common brand of coffee that I've seen but you really can use anything.Note that it has chicory as an adjunct but a good dark roast can do the trick. They're made using a phin which as you can see, is fairly straight forward metal filter that relies on gravity and a finer grind to extract. It's really easy to make and quite delicious though I treat it more as dessert than coffee.

If you live in an area with a decent sized Asian population, you should be able to find it fairly easily as it's crossed over into non-Vietnamese shops. A good bet would be a pho shop or failing that, a bubble tea shop. However, if you live in a place that has a large Vietnamese population (e.g LA or Houston) you may be to explore Vietnamese coffee beyond cafe sua da. Houston, for example, has Long Coffee which does a variety of Vietnamese style coffees, all which are delicious. At the same time, one of Houston's more famous coffee shops Blacksmith does their own version of cafe sua da as the owner is one of the biggest proponents of Houston's Vietnamese food scenes.

Quick tip : you can drink it straight up but it's served with a cup off ice so once it's finished brewing, mix the condensed milk in and pour it over the ice. The residual heat will melt the ice, dilute the drink and bring the sweetness down to something I find more palatable.

Your basis is somewhat flawed -- what matters to end consumers is the cost-per-serving.

So lets standardize on an 8oz serving, which is the recommended output from a single K-cup.

Basis:

  Auto-drip recommends 60g of coffee per liter of water. A liter makes 4.22 eight-oz servings of coffee, meaning 14.21g of coffee per serving, which means 31.92 servings per pound of coffee.

• $0.44(per serving) * 31.92 = ~$14.045 per pound to match K-cup
  
  Conclusions:
  ====
  
  
• If you're willing to buy inexpensive K-cups, it's cheaper than using premium coffee, but not by much; the quality difference exceeds the price difference.
  
  
• If you can reduce your coffee bean costs to around $14/lb or less, you're saving money vs. K-cups; since you can get better coffee at $14/lb that what you'll get in a K-cup, it's fair to say that K-cups are more expensive than decent coffee
  
  All in all, using premium coffee from a local roaster is a little more expensive than the cheapest reasonable K-cup option. However, you can get coffee of superior quality to the best K-cups for less money than you can buy the cheapest of the K-cups, which means that:
  
  

1. If money is the main concern, buy reasonably good beans and auto-drip
   
2. If convenience is the main concern, K-cup might be a reasonable choice
   
3. You can have outstanding quality coffee for not much more than crummy K-cup coffee
   
   tl;dr excellent coffee is more expensive than mediocre K-cup coffee, but not by much; decent coffee is cheaper than K-cups.

Little late to the party, but I am a huge iced coffee fan and I'll tell you what worked for me.

I loved Starbucks Iced Coffees but they got too expensive after a while. I initially used regular VIA packets (not the Iced Coffee one) in a 32 ounce bottle filled with ice water, they were good, but again, got too expensive.

Muscle Milk is the best brand for this recipe (although higher in calories).

It doesn't sound dumb because it has been done already by huge companies here and here.

High quality coffee is usually ground right before it is used as coffee becomes stale quickly. Some people say after 15 mins after being ground it starts to degrade. I can personal say that I don't like grinding my coffee the night before I use it. So any form of distribution network for pre-ground coffee won't be high quality.

Also things like the flavoring is going to be what will be different about your product but that as well is a market that bigger players are already in. Coffee mate(owned by nestle) is every where in grocery stores and comes in 20+ flavours already and coming in both liquid and powder form. It also doubles as creamer. Which is a bonus as most people buying your product probably won't like the biter taste. Your examples of flavours pumpkin spice, French vanilla, they don't have a Amaretto flavour but they do have Hazelnut. You get the point it is going to be a uphill battle to compete on flavours.

Another thing quality coffee is not artificially flavoured but rather it has to do with the bean itself. Coffee doesn't taste like pumpkin spice normally.

The business idea had a good start you saw a need and you tried to fill it. Next time think about barrier to entry to the business and do some research on players already in the field.

As for your brother get him a french press and a blade grinder plus a kettle. If he can buy freshly roasted coffee it will be the easiest and best cup of coffee he has ever had. I used a coffee machine and pre-ground coffee in first year in my dorm and it was great.

My good news is that today I ran the numbers and my fundraising committee raised $21,435 for a local Special Olympics competition, the largest student run one in the world! Our group raised twice as much as last year and it means we can make this years twice as good!

No, not many people have heard of it. Yes, I spent lots of time to find the best coffee for the trail. Yes, this is hands down the best coffee I've ever had in my life. It mixes perfectly, and has the perfect amount of sweetness to it. It's absolutely delicious, and no you won't find a better coffee ON THE PLANET.

If you want to buy a phin, buy this one. I post that link whenever this video gets posted because I've been so happy with that particular model; I have two and I've used them once or twice a day for over a year now with no complaints. It's my go-to daily cup and it's fantastic.

• Dishwasher safe but also simple to hand-wash
  
• Plastic knobs on the sides don't come off (unlike many models)
  
• Holds 11 oz of water (more like 8oz. when also filled with 14-22g of coffee)
  
• Stainless steel doesn't show pitting at the weld joints
  
• Works just like a pour-over but with no paper waste (although rinsing it out every day wastes some water).
  
  The smaller/cheaper models I've tried all had failings in one way or another, but if you're looking for a good phin, I recommend the one linked above.
  
  To find your ideal brew in the phin, start with 15g of the same coarseness you'd use for a Chemex (#5 / "beaker" setting on my Bodum grinder) and fill to the top with just-off-the-boil water. Top off your cup with more hot water when finished to dilute to taste. My morning cup uses 18-20g, but most of my friends prefer it around 14-16g. If you're pouring over sweetened condensed milk (ca phe sua da) use a finer grind to get a slower brew and a sharper slightly over-extracted flavor to counter the potent sweetness. Also consider a can of Trung Nguyen coffee grinds: they have some coffee and butter flavors added but deliver the exact taste of pho-house coffee.

I'm really into the single serving Mountian House meals, they taste better than what I make at home. Walmart carries them like $5 each. One for breakfast, one for dinner, and for lunch snacks, Oh! Ricey instant noodles (way better than ramen) or whatever for lunch. Throw a couple Vinacafe sachets for the morning coffee and you're all set!

I'm not Asian but I've found out that the Asian markets (specifically Vietnamese) carry the BEST food for backpacking. They're big into freeze dried, dehydrated stuff with tons of flavor their culture isn't big into refrigeration.

As far as stoves go? I use this one, works great. Oh, and a Sawyer mini filter.

Ok, here's the totally non-essential, and stupidly expensive for what it is, but I won't go out even overnight without is my Nalgene coffee press or the GSI Nalgene coffee filter. The filter weighs nothing, it's the coffee and sugar that gets you. Now, if you are good with typical Maxwell House/Folger's coffee, and you drink it with cream and sugar, there is one good alternative. Maxim Korean Coffee Packets are amazingly good. I use 2 packets every morning and sometimes again in the evening. The 100 pack does me good for about a month. If you're reading my post, checking out the product, and saying "Really, um... no.", then you are in the same shoes I was in until I tried it. Has sugar and cream already in it.

I'll also second the battery pack. Those who claimed that pillows and camp shoes are non-essential, I beg to disagree! That's like saying Gold Bond powder is non-essential! I'll admit that I'm not UL, but tax, tag, and title, out of town I'm weighing in right around 30 with 2 liters of water and food. Since I weigh 250, it's light enough.

Not OP, but I used to drink generic, regular coffee with 2 creams, 2 sugars. After trying "better" coffee and playing around with the Keurig at work, you begin to appreciate the actual blends and boldness of coffees, whereas adding creamer and sugar actually ruined the taste(s) for me. Aka different blends, stronger roasts, etc etc.

Right now, my favorite coffee is San Francisco Bay Fog Chaser and it's delicious!

This takes out all the guesswork out of making Turkish coffee and its not like a nespresso vs real espresso experience. Most coffee shops here in Turkey now use these machines (its not some water heater, I work with the company that produces these - Arcelik, huge home appliance maker, and this device has like 19 patents on it. They literally found the best coffee making people in Istanbul, analyzed their cofee making process, from the amount of stirrings to the speed the water heats etc and basically replicated the average).

I'm guessing all the coffee shops recommended here are also using these. Most turkish homes that have regular coffee have these now (they've been around for 7-8 years now and are hugely popular).

Ok, so first off I am not entering but wanted to share a crazy coffee related product: Black Blood of the Earth!

Here is the mad scientist that is behind its story. Basically it is extracted coffee. It has all the flavor notes of coffee without any of the bitterness and is super caffeinated. Personally I like the darker versions because they have a much stronger taste. My favorite is actually Death Wish but you can't drink much because it is really strong.

I have been buying Kicking Horse Coffee beans for awhile now. They taste great and come a lot more fresh than the stuff that sits on the grocery store shelves.

If you really want better tasting coffee, I'd suggest going whole bean and getting an electric grinder.

Also if you like cream if your coffee, don't use that fake dairy Coffee Mate stuff. A carton of 1/2 and 1/2 or Heavy Cream(Whipping Cream) tastes so much better due to how the fat in the milk blends with the coffee.

Yea they did. I got a mesh k cup with my keurig as a gift and it won't brew. That was actually the reason I wanted one. Now it barely gets used. They come in biodegradable bags as well. Plus the coffee is pretty good 8)

I've been really happy with Cafe Bustelo. Recently started using their Instant Espresso when I didn't have access to a coffee maker. Now I prefer it for a quick drink in the morning. Makes excellent iced coffee as well. Big Lots has been carrying this (and their espresso grind) so you can pick them up pretty cheap.

Like all the Asian instants, they are a little weak. My wife and I use two of these + 2 vias for a 500ml shared cup of wake up.

I haven't made coffee since I found Medagalia Instant Espresso. It's expensive on Amazon, but I buy it locally for $3.50. It's honestly amazing stuff!

I'll try a different bean. For some reason the store I was at only carried one that wasn't ground. Maybe I should shop around more for the bean. That's what I don't know about. The bean would make THAT much difference? Also what are some of the best whole bean coffee brands?

As for the Vietnamese coffee. I don't know what else to say. I used a chicory coffee. Is that pretty common? I mixed it with condensed milk to make it sweet. It wasn't quite as good as I remembered when I had desert coffee at the Vietnamese restaurant I used to go to. This is the coffee I got

If, like me, you're not picky about your coffee, but you like the convenience of a Keurig, you can get 80 K-Cups for $26. The coffee actually has great reviews, too.

Completely dependent on your location and availability, but Asian markets here in the West coast carry 10-packs of soup in different flavors all dehydrated about the size of a larger ramen seasoning packet for about $1.20. They come in a variety of flavors (miso: tofu, green onion, bean curd, etc.), I’ve eaten some over 2 years past shelf life and you’d never know it was expired. Plus they come with seaweed (a good source of vitamin c). You can also buy a jar of condensed seasoning (powdered) that will last about 40 meals - longer if rationed - they’re typically $4-6.

The Asian markets also sell coffee packs with creamer and sugar blended in shaped like Starbucks Via packets. I bought them on sale last time, 100-pack was $5.

I have an even better solution.

I use a coffee called Death Wish. Cold brewed is just smoother, but honestly i like that i can make a bunch of it over night. well afternoon + over night.

I wouldn't consider myself a coffee connoisseur but rather I base my taste on what others think. This stuff is delicious (or that's what they think), the robusta sweetens the espresso while increasing its potency. Death Wish is a local coffee I tried once, and never stopped. I pretty much only drink this now. It's soooo good. It's super strong and dark. Mine is cooling off right now then I'm about to drink the entire pot.

I drank it straight black and super strong before keto, but now I add MCT oil and soluble collagen powder and it doesn't really change it.

I drink a lot of instant. Mainly because I use coffee as a milk-flavoring for my morning cup :)

I've been living on Cafe Bustelo Instant espresso for a month now. It is a perfectly palatable instant, and way better than Nescafe Taster's choice.

I personally like Death Wish Coffee since it gives me a kick in the ass when I'm still feeling groggy after waking up. But it has a very high caffeine content (it claims to be the strongest coffee in the world) so it's not suitable if you have a higher caffeine sensitivity, i.e. it makes you jittery.

I also haven't tried making Death Wish Coffee in a cold brew method, and I imagine that the concentrate made from it would be very potent in terms of caffeine. Beware!

I wish I was a wizard! I just started experimenting by always making a second batch and adding different things. Oh, I forgot to say with the tiramisu-type ones: add a dash of almond extract.

Some things I've found to be good in 'mallows:

Dehydrated berries, crushed into powder.

Peppermint extract (with or without adding cocoa powder)

Instant espresso

Vanilla bean paste - this has become my standby recipe, sometimes dusted with crushed candy canes.

However, coffee tends to be picky about it's extraction temperature and the amount of time the grinds spend exposed to water is pretty sensitive. Unlike Tea which tends to just get stronger as the steeping time increases, over extraction with coffee turns your delicious cup of joe into a bitter tincture of sadness.

Consider the SF Bay Fog Chaser. It's the best kcup I found where the taste isn't so compromising, and is (supposedly) environmentally friendly!

It has to be like Stok? Stok isn't very good in my opinion and 6 hours to brew is too short. Even the 10 hours Stok's claims to brew is too short. Just buy a mason jar, pour grounds in and fill with water. Let it sit in the fridge for at least 18 hours. Buy an extra fine reusable filter and use that to filter out the grounds.

Just get a nice medium Arabica roast, nothing fancy. Grind it super fine till it's like powdered sugar. You can put some cardamom in there, maybe somewhere around 5g cardamom powder per 100g ground coffee. I usually eyeball it to be honest so my numbers might be off. In some places, they add some extra stuff like cinnamon, nutmeg etc. to the mix, you can experiment with spices to see what you prefer. I personally might add cardamom but most of the time I don't add anything.

It's not always the freshest beans, but the $/lb is ok and has good flavor. I make this daily, mix with a bit of heavy cream to drop some of the bitterness, and get good dose of caffeine with one cup.

I usually buy a small bag or two of fresh-roast local beans to make in my Aeropress when I really want to savor the brew process and flavor ... or make cold-brew.

I used the reusable K-cup thingie in my home Keurig, and it never worked right after that (we ended up replacing it shortly thereafter). I thought it was just bad timing, so I used it in our office one, and we had to buy a new office one then, too. I don't know why, but I had terrible luck with those.

I buy San Francisco Bay K-cups. I first saw them at Costco (which no longer sells them), loved them, and kept buying through Amazon. They are working towards 100% biodegradable packaging. Their K-cups don't have plastic on the bottom (just a plastic ring), and the bags that hold the K-cups I believe are compostable. You can buy some coffee in bags but it's not that popular. Since most coffee makers pour water through the beans, you need more beans/ground coffee to get stronger coffee. I guess manufacturers found selling prepackaged coffee like tea isn't that lucrative if people want to pick how much coffee beans they want.

Interesting, because I have the exact opposite experience. Want to buy a book? Cheaper on Amazon than in the store. Want to buy some electronics? Cheaper on Amazon. Literally any item at a Staples can be found cheaper on Amazon.

If you're comparing the taste you made, to the one you found at the store. There are several things that can be in play. If you're using old coffee it can have a sour taste due to the oils within the beans going rancid. It could also be due to using cold water, which brings out a sour taste.

So in general I would go to a store that has high foot traffic, this lessens the chances of getting old coffee. You also might want to use "cafe Du Monde", the yellow can. Also check if your milk has expired. Good luck.

Try getting "traditional" vietnamese coffee. If it tastes weak, try adding more grounds or packing / screwing the filter down tighter. My phin can't be screwed in, so I just pack the grounds down pretty tight. It should take about 4 minutes to brew completely. Also, if you're using sweetened condensed milk, make sure you're adding the coffee to the milk, not the other way around.

I home roast and if I buy coffee it will NEVER be pre-ground. The only time I break both of these rules is when it comes to Cafe du Monde. I've tried adding chicory myself but I don't see the point when CDM already does such a good job.

I've found that it has almost zero bitterness even when black and a very nice caffeine kick. I do 44/4 IF and I've taken to buying packs of bricks of this coffee and drink it black all through my fasts. (I don't know how it would taste to you as a super taster though, so just a suggestion.)

Why don't more people just use stuff like this in their Keurig? They're just as convenient, cheaper, 97% biodegradable, fare trade, and, in my experience, just better tasting than the vast majority of K-cup varieties.

G7 Trung Nguyen brand coffee from Vietnam a.k.a land of the coffee. I personally think that the Starbucks cafe latte is quite weak and watery (i do get it cold w/ ice though). The consistency is a little thicker and creamier but the flavor is suuuuper rich and aromatic.

Are you talking about the instant espresso form of Bustelo? In the little packets? Or the kind you brew? If it's the latter, it's preferable because the finer grind works better. If it's actual espresso powder, the sort you mix with hot water and stir with a spoon? Don't use that.

1 - There's really no need to rinse. Swishing the cage and grains around in the milk of a new batch should be sufficient.

2 - If it works for you, there's nothing wrong with it. I like it to ferment 24 hours, that way I only have to take care of it once a day, and so I don't overproduce and waste milk. Simply reduce the amount of grains you're using for it to take longer.

3 - I'm also on a ketogenic diet. There's really no way of knowing the carbohydrate content of homemade kefir, so I calculate it the same as commercially-produced kefir, about 6g carbs per 1/2 cup (118 ml).

Once I see pockets of whey in the curd (before it becomes fully separated), I remove the grains and let it continue to ferment (secondary fermentation) another 24 hours. At that point it's usually separated, so I just stir it together and refrigerate it. I figure this way I'm reducing the carb content as much as possible. I also only drink 1/2 a cup of kefir a day (1/4 cup morning and night)... I make it in a 2 oz instant espresso jar.

There are alternatives to the plastic cups. We use to order these when we still used our Keurig, and I think they have a better taste than most others.

Care Du Monde is a shitty alternative. I'm not sure why people suggest it. For starters, it's a blend of arabica and robusta, when most of the street coffee here in Saigon is 100% robusta. Secondly, Viet coffee doesn't have chicory. Thirdly, Viet street coffee is roasted with butter and sugar and is the only coffee in the world, that I know of, that is roasted that way. The coffee I linked to is roasted that way plus they add cocoa. It's the stuff I use at home and is the closest I can get to the same caphe sua da that the lady on my street sells.

Finally, re: yogurt - Viet yogurt is made with condensed milk. I'm not sure what the equivalent to that would be. If you want to make a caphe sua da (condensed milk) you should hit an Asian market and try to find Vietnamese condensed milk because it tastes a lot different then western.

When I make my chocolate cake, I mix cocoa powder and instant expresso powder in a bowl and then add boiling water and mix. Then I let it cool and add buttermilk and vanilla extract and those are my wet ingredients (that I then mix with the butter, sugar, eggs, and dry ingredients).

That sounds about right for k-cups. That's about 75 cents per cup.

I usually pay between .50 and .60 when I buy k-cups.

Of course, it's still more expensive than grinding and brewing your own coffee (which you can also do anyway with reusable K-Cups), but the convenience factor is what you're paying for.

I have a Keurig at home and I'm a little of a snob but also won't complain if I have regular coffee.

For camping I've been having the G7 3-1. All I have to do is heat up the water and I add 2 packets per cup.

Oh yea, I don't have an RV yet so I tent camp but once I get my RV I'll probably still drink the G7.

1. K-Cups for when I don't have time for the aeropress. As, I tend to move slowly waking up at 4:30am.

Some of the reviews for Death Wish coffee beans make me chuckle.

Not long. Technically the oils go rancid quickly. Like within a year. Though people on here will say you can have a can of coffee for years. If you’re any kind of coffee snob you won’t like it.

Full beans will always last longer than ground. I’ve heard unroasted coffee would have the longest shelf life, but then you have to roast it.

I just keep emergency coffee that I consider disposable after a year or so. I might use it to make a batch of cold brew or something. But I buy a jar of instant and then I buy a 4 pack of this on amazon when it’s on sale and swap them out yearly.

Watch the ibrik closely when on the stove.

As the sides start to roll and bubble slightly toward the center, pull it off the heat.
Let it settle, and put it back on the heat, watch till it starts to roll and bulge on the sides, then remove again.
Repeat this a couple times and remove and let sit a couple mins to settle grounds.

If you let the coffee boil up and “break the surface” it will kill your crema.
