Most of our gifts were replacements or upgrades of things we already owned. A really cheap and awesome gift we got was this stainless steel scraper, which makes it so much easier to transfer food from a cutting board to a pot/pan. We also got a matching set of this luggage belt with a TSA lock--I actually gifted one to my husband years ago, but we used this as an opportunity to replace his now worn-down belt. We also replaced our kitchen scale with this Amazon Basics one, which works really well. Another Amazon Basics item we received was this paper shredder, which is a kickass workhorse of a machine.
One of the first gifts we got was a Corelle dish set that I LOVE--it's so much lighter and more durable than the stoneware set we were using. We also replaced our silverware set with an Oneida set that we both picked out, which was a very sweet and meaningful experience. We already have a nice Oneida silverware set, but it belonged to my husband's late mother, and he wanted to retire it so it wouldn't take any more wear & tear.
Those are all gifts that were my hands-down favorite things we received. We were also able to buy two expensive items off our registry thanks to Amazon's completion discount. We purchased a Sonos soundbar and a Miele vacuum that were absolutely worth every penny we spent on them!

I'm pretty uneducated in the audiophile community so I thought I would ask for some help.
What is your budget?
$300-450 (US)
What are you looking for?
Was originally looking for a cheaper soundbar and sub to listen to music first, TV second. Seems most sub $200 sound bars were pretty meh. Best Buy has an open box SK10Y soundbar (Amazon Link) at about $400. The idea of chrome-cast/WiFi streaming on the soundbar so that it can play music while I'm on a phone call ect. is the most appealing aspect to me.
I began thinking for this much money though maybe I could do a better setup that would be able to include something like the chrome cast/WiFi music streaming?
What gear do you own?
none/4K TV
What do you intend on using for a source?
music streaming and some Netflix
What material will you be using your gear for?
Music/TV: Mainly rap and then rock and a little pop. Then some Netflix.
Movies: Occasional DVD through Xbox one.
Are you willing to buy used?
Yes
Thanks in advance!
My parents just got an LG 49" 4k smart tv for about $450 and it looks pretty freakin sweet. Best Buy has a 43" for $350 rn.
Also definitely a soundbar. Go Samsung. I have this one and my life has never been the same lol. I'm sure there are newer models by now too. It hooks up with an HDMI and also has bluetooth, aux, line in, and I believe optical inputs too (not too sure about that one). My brother used it in a decent sized living room and it sounded great. I'm now using it in my bedroom and it also sounds amazing.
I don't use headsets so I wouldn't know about that, but hope this helped a bit.
Yay for Pittsburgh redditors! I don't know about your living situation, but I'm in an apartment right now. I picked up a 55" Vizio 4K tv last year for a decent cost, and a Vizio sound bar with rear speakers and bass to give a sort of faux 5.1 setup for cheap. The bass is honestly overpowered, and the 40" bar I have is probably no different from the 38", but I got a deal, so it just depends on how much shopping around you're willing to do.
I'm really happy with Vizio. I think a lot of their newer TVs are great for watching movies, specifically. but I have an older Sony bluray player that gets the job done.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SMBGP76/ref=twister_B018S0L0GG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-M55-C2-55-Inch-Ultra-Smart/dp/B00T63YW38/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1465172595&sr=1-1&keywords=vizio+55+4k
This is a newer model of the soundbar setup I'm currently using (this one has an HDMI input, mine doesn't).
The sound is really good. The only two issues I have are:
Other than that, though, I've been really happy with it. I've used it with my TV, PS4, XB1, Wii, WiiU, Switch, even hooked my old GameCube up a year or two ago and it was great.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SMBGP76/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?qid=1466382529&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=vizio+sound+bar&dpPl=1&dpID=31%2B%2BBTNrfQL&ref=plSrch
This is the sound bar I've got. It's got rear speakers so you get true 5.1 surround. There is a new model out with a slim sub instead of the one here, but I'm not sure if it's fully available.
Is it as good as a full 5.1 setup? No. But the sound it produces is great and it's a great price.
You could just put a really good center channel speaker there - the majority of sound from TV and movies is mixed in the center anyway; alternatively, a speaker bar such as this bic.
It also looks like you could put 3 identical LCRs on that stand (which is an ideal setup anyway). There wouldn't be much separation between them but the sound quality would be great compared to a sound bar. However I'd imagine the WAF probably low. If you could find some short & narrow speaker stands, it looks like you could fit the L&R on stands.
With all of this of course the receiver has to go somewhere
It doesn't sound like you care about surround speakers. If that's the case, spend a few extra dollars and get the SB4031-D5 rather than the SB3851-D0. The newer version of the sub definitely sounds better and feels punchier (if that's even a word).
Whichever way you go, definitely get a center channel. It makes a huge difference in intelligibility.
She would be better off controlling the TV with the stereo remote than the other way around. If it is a new TV it is not like she is used to the remote or anything yet. You could always get a generic universal remote that does both as well.
Does she already have separate speakers at all or are you looking to purchase these as well? sound bar would be good for a grandma I guess. Visio has those things that go under the TV as well. Like one of these.
on amazon for $130
A number of possible solutions. Your TV has optical sound out. So you will need something to convert the optical digital sound signal to an analog signal (DAC). Then you will need something to amplify the analog signal to drive a speaker (amp). Then of course the speaker itself.
Here are some possible solutions:

• Budget and currency: $250 max
• In which state are you located: NY
• Where can you buy from (ie which Amazon if any): I go to college in NYC and don't have a car. Other than that I can buy from anywhere.
• What you want to use it for (music, movies, games, all of the above, etc): all of the above.
• On a desk or in a room (or both): In my room. its pretty big
• How big of a space and how loud: medium sized basement. I live in a big room in a frat house (17'x17' and 3000 sqft) and want it to be loud.
• Powered, passive, or no preference: I don't know
• Any size limitations for either speaker or amp: No
• Do you want something you can easily upgrade later: the more customizable the cooler
• Do you like your music / games / movies / etc. to sound a certain way? loud bass is really important
• TLDR: Had a Vizio soundbar system but my subwoofer crapped out, and I can't replace it. If I can get something similar to that (in terms of sound quality and especially loudness), that would be perfect.
And if you want the very best with a $300 - 500 budget (No Dolby Atmos) with the same main features as the Vizio soundbar, then I'd go with either Sony or Sonos (Playbase).

Thank you for your response.
As a matter of fact I was just looking to buy the Vizio 5.1 soundbar (https://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-SB4551-D5-Smartcast-Sound-System/dp/B01G3STJTK/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1482356225&sr=1-2&keywords=vizio+smartcast).
I thought it was more than enough for my small room and it has the good looks and the wireless sub bonus.
Hows your experience with it? Recommended over your other denon+monoprice?
In an honest attempt to helpful, I'd use this tool to check price history on anything on Amazon:
https://camelcamelcamel.com/LG-SK10Y-5-1-2-Channel-Hi-Res/product/B07CF9WNB9
In a less necessary, telling you what you've already heard kind of way - don't buy that, or any soundbar over $50. A $500 budget can get you some really nice speakers, if you're to get a soundbar go cheap because that's the only reason to get one.
For the soundbar, they're generally not recommended on this sub.
That being said, if you absolutely have to have one and don't want recommendations for a receiver/speaker setup, Vizio is probably the best value for the money. This 3.1 model is $220 and will have a wireless sub.
As for the switch you posted, that won't work for your setup because it only has 3 inputs. You want one that does 4X1, which will be something like this.

It was on sale for 279 though. Sounds great for my needs and she agrees to make the downstairs a media room! Thanks!
I have this one and I like it:

I use the bluetooth connection to stream music from my tablet and it works great for movies and games on the TV. It's plenty loud to fill my smallish living room. The only thing I wish it had that it doesn't is a headphone jack. I had to buy a wireless headphone set for my PS3 because of that.
I can't really say much about sound quality. I'm sure it doesn't sound as good as a real high-end system, but it's way more compact and costs less too. Really easy to install too since you can just sit it in front of your display.
I have this Vizio 3.1 sound bar. I think it sounds good for the money but what I love is that it has Chromecast Audio built in.

Not really looking at everything, right?
How about this
Using fakespot.com it looks like most of the reviews are real, and price tracking shows that while it did go up prior to it's price today about two weeks ago, it's current price is still $100 off it's previous lowest. Plus, since I'm prime this qualify's for an extra 20% back if I use my Prime card to pay for it, that's another $60 off. Seems like a pretty good deal.
I have the ps4 running hdmi to a vizio tv, and then outputting to this, and have been very happy.

The rears and sub and connected and then talk to the bar via bluetooth, so no wires between the two. They make several different sizes, based on your budget. Bass is very nice.
Stuck on which one to purchase, would love an opinion! Thank you!

Gee here is another one with perfect 5 stars and a ton of reviews from March 16th that also read like marketing copy.
I got a vizio 5.1 system, I connect it to my TV with the HDMI (ARC) to the system, works great!
Edit// VIZIO SB4551-D5 Smartcast 45” 5.1 Slim Sound Bar System This is what I got, pretty awesome especially since the sub and satellite speakers are wireless (meaning no wires coming out the main soundbar to the other speakers, but you do need connect power to the sub and there you run the cables for the satellite speakers)
Nope. I ended up returning the Sonos Play Bar and got myself a Sony HT-RT5 5.1 wireless system. It accepts everything, including DTS, 7.1, etc and all via HDMI. The Sonos system was jus too limited. :)
I bought this Sony kit at Costco that's a soundbar with a wireless sub and 2 wireless satellites. Only one I've seen like that. Works great so far and you only need power outlets for the sub and satellites. No speaker wires running all across the room. It has Bluetooth, analog, optical, hdmi, and streaming services. I haven't noticed any latency either. I'll look up the model number when I get home.
Edit: it's the Sony HT-RT5 kit
Sonos Playbar is hard to beat if you want the bar only, especially with your generous budget. You can add wireless sub and surrounds later on if desired.

Dude I got a BIC sound bar, and I was surprised how horrifying it sounds LOL.
If anyone is in a market for a surround sound sound bar, I highly recommend this one. http://amzn.com/B002IT1FFU
>Would these be what you're talking about?:
First link is a refurb one for ~$99. Second link is it new for ~$200.

Based on the second link, it looks like it's got an AUX port (definitely need this for my needs). Can't tell on the first link though since it's just the one image.
Samsung HW-E450. I literally just ordered it, so I have no impressions or basis for comparison. AVS Forum has a section on sound bars that may be worth checking out for more info.
I know one of the first results when I look up is this.
https://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-SB4051-C0-Wireless-Subwoofer-Satellite/dp/B00SMBGP76/
Which has HDMI through. But I for the life of me can't see those tiny pictures better to see what the other inputs are and if it has 3.5 out. That being said. I also don't need an entire sound set up
For the TV I would suggest the 65" TCL 6 Series at $800 bucks. The 75" is would be a better for the distance you have but it's double the price at $1500.
For sound, I just purchased this soundbar for $100. The sound is easily 20 times better than my regular television speaker, it's simple to setup, and you can control it with your regular television remote using HDMI ARC.
Alot of people here will outright hate SoundBars, but keep in mind even a basic 2.1 setup from here costs $400+
he can get the Yamaha 108 for $87 refurbished by Yamaha
this is basically the Costco model and is identical to the 108, same firmware and specs/features
would you say this is the best deal for him to get ?
the regular yamaha108 is $150 refurb and $200 new, I don't know how I found this cause is not coming up in amazon search , ill be getting this tomorrow and report back how it looks and if is the real 108 Costco version or an amazon title mistake

This means that you can create a Google Home Max with an ordinary TV sound bar and the Home Mini. For example, the Yamaha ATS-1060-R is my current recommendation. I have one attached to my TV via ARC so it powers up and down with it, and another separate sound bar unit in the center of the house for music only duty.
You're not going to really find one you like at that price, but try: http://smile.amazon.com/VIZIO-SB4051-C0-Wireless-Subwoofer-Satellite/dp/B00SMBGP76 (but it is normally $300)

I rarely suggest sound bars, but I this this a case were a decent soundbar will do the trick. Vizio has very affordable an decent 5.1 set ups. Look into it. Check [this one](VIZIO SB3651-E6C 5.1 Soundbar Home Speaker (Renewed) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D7SLWRZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_eJ0zDbMXZ0FS3) on Amazon.
5.1 soundbar. There's only a few out there. If your in a small room the vizio 5.1 sounds really good. The Bluetooth subwoofer goes behind your couch and the rear surround speakers are wired to it so you don't have to run wires all over. you can really feel the bass without rattling the house down. 1 wire coming out of your audio out in your tv and your done. Mine sounded better then a denon and klipsch system I replaced it with. The bass isnt that great, but the way you feel it through the couch at low volumes really adds to the experience. People in this sub hate soundbars, but if your in a small room then give it a try. You can always return it and there's no wires to run. You can literally set it up with full surround sound in like 5 minutes. do you have an optical port? is this your system? https://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-SB4051-C0-Wireless-Subwoofer-Satellite/dp/B00SMBGP76 if it is you could use an optical cable from the xbox to the sound bar. then the hdmi to the tv.

But this Vizio model:

Is recommended over on r/hometheater
I don't care for the price I paid, if it's true or false. I bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-SB4051-C0-Wireless-Subwoofer-Satellite/dp/B00SMBGP76 . The rear speakers are useless kind off right now.
No to both. Bluetooth only allows connection with one device at a time. So to connect it to the sound bar you won't be able to connect to another speaker.
That particular soundbar doesn't have any options for adding more speakers. Most soundbars don't. If you want that as an option, return the bar you have and look for one with rear speakers. I know Samsung's line can, and here is a Vizio soundbar with two additional surround speakers that connect to the subwoofer.
https://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-SB4051-C0-Wireless-Subwoofer-Satellite/dp/B00SMBGP76
Soundbars are set it and forget it type devices. They are very limited for upgrading and making changes. Basically if you want more features then it came with, you need to change the soundbar.
I have the older model of this soundbar https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SMBGP76/ and haven't had any complaints about music/TV sound
I keep the sub/bass turned down a couple of notches but nothing extreme. The previous people who lived below me used to complain about me walking around with my dress shoes so I think they would have complained if the sub was too loud.
