As my graduation present I got myself the Seiko SNE107. The watch (as most Seikos are) is of superb quality. however, I've never seen this watch specifically get any love. The watch has a case diameter of 42 mm. The bezel is very nice, not too loose and not too tight. The watch is pretty heavy, but that is to be expected when buying a diving watch. Screw down crown works well, no wobble. Hardex crystal is good. Only complaint is the pin and collar bracelet. Also, the bracelet is a little small for the watch IMO. That can be easily fixed with a NATO/Rubber strap. The hands are are nice and its very easy to read. The lume is great, nothing to complain about at all. The day date function is nice, Saturday and Sunday are different colors than the weekdays for those that like that. The watch is solar powered, but that should be no turn off, leave the watch in the sun for a couple hours when first receiving the watch and you'll be good. Overall it is a fantastic watch for its price, I do recommend it.

You have a few choices. You could either go quartz or automatic. Quartz is where you have a battery (and sometimes solar charging), and automatic is when the movement of your wrist winds a little spring in the watch. Automatic watches require resetting every few weeks because they are not as accurate, but some people think they are cool. I will assume you don't want to deal with that, but if you do, something from Seiko would be your #1 best bet for sure.

This particular watch (which is what I am wearing right now) looks delicate but by all means, it is not. It is meant for scuba diving so you can swim with it and it is very durable to the point where I have accidentally used it to block a lacrosse shot and it survived without a scratch.
If you want to go Quartz, and for 200$, probably solar, you will want to go Citizen.
http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-AW1361-10H-Avion-Stainless-Leather/dp/B00KCF7JL6/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457419158&sr=1-3&nodeID=6358540011&keywords=citizen+watch
I don't have a citizen myself but they are very highly reviewed over at /r/watches.
You could also go another rout and get a G-SHOCK, which is probably the most durable watch you can buy.

(Both of those are solar power).
I would encourage you to look above your price range a bit, especially if you want to go for a Citizen, because it allows you to get something like this that will last you forever, but you can still get something great for under $200.

The watches I listed here are much more versatile than most of the ones you linked to, (except for the G-SHOCK, don't wear that with a suit!) I will wear my Seiko Orange Monster with anything from a swim suit at the beach or with a black suit at a formal event. Buying from any of these three brands and not from a fashion/clothing brand that also makes watches will guarantee that your watch will last for a very long time. Feel free to PM me or ask for help at /r/watches if you have any more questions or want any recommendations.
I want some new watches but I need to sell a few to be able to justify it to myself. I'll pay the shipping cost to COSU and the paypal fees with reasonable offers.

Next up is the beautiful Bulova Precisionist 93B130. 40mm case size and 22mm lug width. The sweeping second hand and deployment clasp make this a great dress watch. It's in great condition and comes with the box and papers. Looking for $125.

My wife and I last month or so just started watching Parks and Rec on Netflix. Being a watch enthusiast I was always curious which watch Ron Swanson wore on the show so I looked it up as I think it is sharp looking. Turns out, as many already know, it is a discontinued Citizen 2100 Calibre

I was not in a hurry to get it but thought if I ever came across one I'd perhaps pick one up. Friday one popped up on Facebook Marketplace, which I have never used and not sure why I even looked, and I decided to grab it for what I thought was a good price after seeing what they go for on e-bay (it is getting harder to find this version). When I told my wife I was running to meet the guy after work she rolled her eyes and asked why I needed yet another watch. I told her it was a good deal and that I was going to flip it (that excuse is getting thin though as I have yet do so with a watch). However after seeing it she is now suggesting I keep it because she really likes the dial. Even though it looks white it actually has a horizontal striped pattern, almost sunburst like, that only shows up in certain light.
The watch definitely showed signs of steady wear after 2 years, but cleaned up rather nice. The mineral crystal needs some attention as there are a fair number of micro scratches that should buff right out. I'm still on the fence about keeping it, but for now will give it a week or two and see if I still feel its worth hanging on to. Eco drive, flyback chrono and an alarm feature make it a pretty solid piece for well under $200.
Is this going to be a dressy watch for formal/special occasions? Or are you looking for a daily wear watch?
If the
formerlatter, then perhaps a hard-wearing quartz is a good idea. If you want something special, but that you'll have to take care of, then your budget could easily allow you a dressier mechanical watch (auto or hand wound). In fact, fuck it, here's a list of shit I dug up. I love internet-window-shopping:
Young-looking Seiko automatic diver
Hamilton Khaki
Another (larger) Hamilton Khaki
Khaki Pilot (very diver/aviator-esque look)
A Tissot auto chrono
A fairly dressy Hamilton
A nice and clean sporty Tissot
A rather large but eye-catching Hamilton
Yes, I know I went kinda overboard on the Hamiltons, but I was working off the impression your watch example and fondness for divers gave me.
EDIT: got my former/latter mixed up. I blame Mr. Walker's magnificent amber restorative.
Depending on when your birthday is (or if you're willing to wait a bit past it) the Certina DS-2 is probably the best watch you can get in that price range (once it's released). It's TC quartz, accuracy rated to within 10 seconds per year. The Chronograph DS-2 has been very well received on WUS.
The Bulova Precisionist Langford is another option, it's also rated to within 10 seconds per year, but is non TC, and sometimes runs a little out of spec (with 20 seconds). The hand beats 16 times per second, so it has the appearance of moving smoothly.
Both of these will deliver on quality timekeeping. If you get anything else in that price range except a Casio RC (which doesn't have the look you want at that price range), it won't keep time nearly as well. This will either be a regular quartz watch which keeps time to within 15 seconds per month (~1/10th as accurate), or a mechanical watch, which at that price point will keep time to within 20-40 seconds per day (~1/1400th as accurate).
When you're talking about mechanical watches, quality takes on a bit of a different meaning, because the accurate timekeeping ship has sailed since we got quartz watches. There quality would be best measured by how long it can go without servicing (both the Certina and Bulova will at a minimum need their batteries replaced every few years), and in that regard a Seiko with a 6R15 movement, such as the SARG005 (unfortunately, Seiko doesn't name their watches well at the mid range) would be one of the best options at that price point. The 6R15 is a newer movement based on the 7S26 (which has a very good track record for keeping on ticking after a long time without maintenance). You will have to set the time every few days though to keep it accurate to the minute.
If you want any watch with both a compass and temperature readings, it sounds like you'd be better off with a Casio Pro-Trek. They have more sensors than G-shocks, and are normally cheaper.
Here's one that costs only 50$ and has a compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer. That being said, it's not solar powered, and it has a negative display, which some people dislike (negative displays are slightly harder to read than positive ones).
If you want to go cheaper or really want a positive display, here's a 40$ one, but it does not have a compass or tough solar.
If you have your heart set on a g-shock. The only one with a compass and thermometer is this one, which, at 180$, does break the bank.
If you don't really care about a compass or thermometer that much and really want a g-shock, I can personally vouch for this at 40$, it's a steal. Other commonly recommended G-shocks are this one because it's less bulky and this one because not only is it less bulky, but it's one of the cheapest G-shocks with multiband-6 (for automatically syncing itself to the correct time) and tough solar.
My overall recommendation to you would be the 50$ Pro-Trek, as I think it fits your needs the best for cheap. However if you are against negative displays, it might not be for you.
Edit: Also the watch you chose is pretty cool. I just saw it was only 62$ on Amazon, that's a great option as well.
I wanted to have something with white dial to wear daily, I'd grown tired of black dials so I bought Citizen BV1080-18A for its superior contrast and legibility. It's been one of my best purchases in recent times and I'm really happy with it. I had to remove stock strap because it was too long for me, replaced with a bracelet and it's like a whole different watch now. Super comfortable, super legible.
If you're looking to invest in gear for riding outdoors you need the following:
They're an OK brand, but $250 is way too much for a simple quartz like this. Just 200m diver is nothing special, OK it has a sapphire crystal, but so do most watches like this.
If you want a quartz diver then you can probably do far better. Heck, you can get something like this that is $150, and it's a great respected make too.
I don't really like to spend over 100 for a standard quartz watch. This Wenger isn't a chronograph, isn't a special ATM depth... I can't really see why it's so pricey. It's about $150 overpriced as far as I can see.
Casio G-Shock GWG-1000 Mudmaster
Price: $750 USD (~$530 on Amazon Prime)
Movement: Tough Solar Quartz
Style: Sport/Military/Outdoors
Size: 59.5 x 56.1 x 18 mm ( huuuuuge )

Pros:
Cons:
Description: I purchased this watch as a beater and so far, have been super impressed. I threw it in this category because I think it's on the top of the line of daily drivers with lots of features that not only are useful in your day to day, but that improve the lifespan of the watch.
First and foremost, the major upgrades from the GG-1000 include a sapphire face which should have no problem keeping scratch free for years with its inlaid bezel under the case top. Along with that, a 6 band Atomic Timekeeping Receiver can automatically sync with atomic stations in the US, Japan, China, and Europe is another added feature that is an upgrade from the GG-1000. Lastly, a Tough Solar power unit keeps you running for years, so you won't have to worry about battery replacement.
Some extra day to day features include, 5 Alarms, a stopwatch, a timer, world clock, vibration resistance, waterproof 200m, and dirt/mud resistance with gaskets on the crown and button cylinders. How resistant is it? Time will tell, but it should be fine for day to day use. Included as well is a barometer, altimeter, thermometer, and compass which honestly I don't use much. I do get chances to use the compass and altimeter when camping, and was surprised by how accurate it was, but the only sensor is a barometer to measure altitude, so depending on reference values and weather conditions, might vary in accuracy.
There are some quirks. I am not sure why a sunset/sunrise mode is not included in the model, since it definitely is included in lesser models. Also, I still haven't figured out how to snooze an alarm, and it appears the module 5463 does not include the snooze feature. I do think the most annoying quirk is that it's really difficult to use the crown while it's still on your wrist, since it requires a few turns to unlock it. All in all I think this is on the high end of the daily drivers that's pretty stylish for day to day use, with some extra features to boot that you won't get in a mechanical watch.
Bulova is a pretty well loved American brand (like Hamilton) known for innovation. They are now owned by Citizen so I would put their movements on par with something by Orient (who is owned by Seiko). Correct me if I'm wrong here /r/watches. Note that that particular piece, though nice, is even larger than the Hamilton that you posted. You can't really go wrong at that price point though!
I reckon the Hamilton has the highest quality movement out of the ones we've discussed in this thread, but at the end of the day it's worth going for the one that you like the looks of the most, because you're the one that is going to be looking at it 90% of the time!
Edit Just as an afterthought, have you considered something from the Hamilton Khaki family of watches? I pined after a Khaki field for the longest time but then found the 2013 Maratac Mid Pilot and was swayed by that.
Edit2 It's kinda heresy on this sub but at your price range, have you considered getting something with a quartz movement? That opens up the world to a lot of design choices! My daily wear is a Tissot V8 which is quartz powered, and it is super accurate and low-maintenance.
I have a Seiko SARB005 that I wear a lot and I've really been impressed with it. Looks great and keeps excellent time. It's more in the $300 range, but all the other ones I can think of that fit your aesthetic (Junkers Bauhaus, Junghans Max Bill, etc) are significantly more than that. Good luck!
Thank you - I have two eco-drives. The most recent a Navihawk A/T and it is awesome - but both of these have crystals which are wrecked. My older Calibre 2100 is almost opaque! I definitely need the strength of sapphire.
That thing is very attractive though!
I'd recommend the Tissot PRC 200 or V8 for a chrono in that price range
V8 On Leather
PRC 200 on Leather
PRC 200 on Steel
Other brands I'm that I'm sure will get mentioned: Orient (Japan), Seiko (Seiko), Hamilton (Swiss), Christopher Ward (Swiss). For under $300, you're looking at a quartz movement, which is fine.
If you just want a cheap, good quality sport chrono, I'd probably get a Seiko while you save for something nicer (if you want to)
I bought a seiko sea urchin and I'm pretty happy with it. It's an automatic and I luv to watch the second hand sweep through the dial. I would surely recommend it from my personal experience.
Seiko Men's SNZF17J1 5 Sports Automatic Stainless Steel Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WU76SUW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_xjbIwbRRS54K0
If you want a mechanical watch, I would recommend the Orient Union, Millenium, or Vintage (in order of price). The Millenium (that's how they spell it) has a metal band but you could easily afford a leather one as well within your budget once you factor in the 50% off coupon code floating around.
If you'd prefer one closer to that Kenneth Cole you'll have to go quartz, but the Tissot PRC200 would be your best selection. Here is the amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000B7MBHM/ref=aw_d_iv_watches?is=l&qid=1323692800&sr=8-3
Sorry I didn't provide more links, on my way to work so I'm on my phone on the train.
Skip the armanis. they are cheap "designer" watches. basicly they make the case and drop a citizen movement inside (if you´re lucky. you could find a cheap generic chinese movement inside)
the Victorinox is nice becuase it carries a ETA movement.
you can also have a citizen eco drive one which are pretty reliable and solar powered. Citizen movements are a dime a dozen and half the non swiss made industry uses them, but if you buy citizen directly insted of a 3rd party that using citizen movements, you usualy get a better movement at a lower price.

Or if you want swiss you can have a nice tissot V8 for cheap.
http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-T0394171105700-Black-Chronograph-Watch/dp/B002IVGKJY/ref=sr_1_2?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1320801621&sr=1-2
Winter liner for your helmet, proper winter gloves, and a face mask will make the ride very comfortable.
I have a Bern helmet and they offer a lot of liners compatible with their helmets: http://bernunlimited.com/shop/accessories/knits.html
For gloves I use these (I like how the fingers help hold the handlebars and brakes without reducing finger mobility by having 5 bulky fingers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SOMBQBI/ref=pd_sim_468_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=SA68F2J0KCMWT4VGE10D
Face mask, really anything cheap works. Be sure you air it out before using the first time cause they smell like cheap chemicals: https://www.amazon.com/World-Pride-Face-Snowboard-Motorcycle/dp/B006K930UC/ref=sr_1_16?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1478018406&sr=1-16
Up front: I'm not a watch expert like many here... by here are my thoughts anyway.
I like it. Ive never owned a Bulova as well but I've thought about it.
This one does look a big thick though (personally I have a small wrist so I take that into consideration).
Considering what you are looking for I would also consider this Tissot: http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-T0394171105700-Black-Chronograph-Watch/dp/B002IVGKJY/ref=sr_1_12?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1348266013&sr=1-12&keywords=tissot
Its about twice as expensive, but its a great watch. I bought one 3 years ago and I've had a good run with it.
You can get a very clean Christopher Ward watch with a Swiss movement for under $500. I just purchased this Christopher Ward "flieger" (German flight watch) style piece, and I love it.
I'm finding that at the $400-$500 range you have a huge variety of decent quality timepieces to choose from. I can afford more expensive watches, but I'm still uncomfortable with the idea of anything more than $1K on my wrist.
By the way, by no means do you even have to spend that much for a great watch. The Orient Blue Mako and the Seiko Monster are popular and well regarded, and they're both inexpensive.
Answer to Q3: Dress for the last few miles! You will warm up quite a bit, especially if you have any hills. Nice thing about biking is that if you're a little bit cold, pedal harder. If you're too warm, shed a layer.
Create a spreadsheet (or note) that details the weather conditions, what you wore, and how you felt. Get a feel for what you should wear in certain conditions. Then you don't have to think about what to wear in the morning. I.e. it was 36 F this morning, and previous rides showed me that I would be comfortable in thermals, balaclava, and lobster gloves.
Orient ray is on sale below $100 on Amazon...can't go wrong with a diver..take off the rubber strap and slap on a nato or leather strap for $10 and you're golden.
http://www.amazon.com/Orient-EM6500CD-Automatic-Black-Rubber/dp/B00A6G7F3S/ref=sr_1_5?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1411743376&sr=1-5&keywords=Orient+ray
Same watch with a Nato
http://i.imgur.com/MFlETF6.jpg
If you have a bit of a larger wrist and can go about $150 I would suggest AVI-8...make great pilot chrono's out of the box. I like the Hawker but like I said measure wrist..Im at 7 inches so anything 39-44mm im good with..this watch is 42mm
http://www.amazon.com/AVI-8-AV-4011-04-Hurricane-Stainless-Leather/dp/B00FR70N44/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1411743549&sr=1-1&keywords=AVI-8
"Analog" G-Shocks are nice but I think the nice ones (i.e. A1100/A1000) are out of your price range. For a mechanical option I recommend the Seiko Monster, like the SRP309 or the SRP311.
Here's how, It's pretty easy but you need a special tool, it only costs $5-$10 (one of my watches came with two bands and a free springbar tool). You can also order the mako on a silicone band
Watch or jewelry shops in your area might have some. For budget-friendly options, try Hadley Roma on Amazon, usually $15-30. You just need a small screwdriver and a steady hand to push back the spring bar from the lug on the watch case. You'll typically need a width of 22mm, maybe 20 or 24; just measure the distance between the lugs or check the specs.
For a high quality watch for your dollar, especially your first (or first serious) watch, try a Citizen Eco-drive, Seiko, or Orient. Many of these don't require a battery change every couple years: the Eco-drives charge its battery from any light source, though this battery may have to be replaced after a decade. An Automatic winding watch, like the Seiko 5 line or the Orient Mako or Ray, use the movement of a counterweight (rotor) while you wear it to store energy in a spring. This energy will run out after about 1.5 days, so either wear it or shake it around every day.
A Timex Expedition served me well for a while, but I sure like my Citizens, Orient Ray, and Seiko 5 Military.
[Orient Ray Blue EM6500CD]
Price: About 200$
Movement: Automatic
Style: Diver
Size: 42mm
Link: amazon
Description: This is, probably, the best watch selling for under 250$. The blue sunburst dial is captivating, the bezel is sturdy and has a deep blue colour that really stands out. The dial features dots for hour markers and the lume on this thing is just outstanding, certainly at this price point.
I've replaced the rubber bracelet on mine for several nato's along the way but recently I fitted a brown Hirsch + butterfly deployant clasp combo that I had lying around. The whole combo works really well and makes this unassuming Orient even better IMHO.
I bought mine on Amazon for 115 GBP but now it seems to be selling for more than double that. I'm certain it can still be found for under 200$ though.
If you want a Chronograph, then I agree 100% - this is a great choice. It's also available in a Black Bezel
There is also an older version of their non-solar Quartz diver with a Chronograph called the SNAE25 (I don't know that I would buy this one on Amazon as it doesn't come with warranty).
If you can give up the Chronograph, then you have the Monster and Classic Divers to look at.
Good luck!
When you say, “straight from them”, do you mean fulfilled by amazon? This is the one I’m looking at.
https://www.amazon.com/G-Shock-GX-56BB-Blackout-Watches-Black/dp/B01GR7MF4S
It’s sold by onlyu, but fulfilled by amazon.
Thank you.
Overall, Rolex Milgauss with the green crystal. Between the high polish case, the near glowing edge of the crystal, and the contrast colored dial (and that second hand!) nothing beats it for me.
Under $1200, I have a few. The SARG005 that I daily is pretty hard to beat in my book, even at under $400.
In the same price category, I've been looking for a dive watch, and a few keep bouncing around in my head. I think the Christopher Ward C60 with a red bezel tops my list here overall under $1200. I think my budget is going to have me go with my runner up to that, a Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80.
Lastly, under $200, I think the Orient Ray II is as good looking as you can get for the money.
Same here. I would love a really nice watch someday though. I'm fine with mid tier watches though. Right now I'm waffling between a Seiko Turtle or a Maranez.
I own one of these bad boys, the Seiko SNE107 Sunburst Solar Diver. Not their most popular diver, but it's a great watch. The metal bracelet could be put together better, but I normally wear mine with a nylon or leather NATO.
Take a look at this Orient Black Ray
Orient is owned by Seiko. They are pretty good watches, and this looks more like the Omega than the similarly priced Seikos.
it's a departure from the leather band style but the Seiko Monster line is known to be an incredibly good value in the world of watches. I'm wearing my orange one right now.
http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SRP309-Classic-Automatic-Watch/dp/B00AJK9CL4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453354106&sr=8-1&keywords=seiko+monster
I saw two Orients that fit your description. The Championship and Disk. They're relatively inexpensive, so you can save your folks some cash (or spend the remainder on another watch).
I also searched Amazon for a black metal band + automatic movement. Here's a few results: Seiko Men's SKZ329, Orient EM65007B Men's Ray Raven, Seiko Men's SNZJ67, Android AD563BKK Armor 50.
I don't think so, but you could try the Khaki King Scuba on a rubber strap. Personally I think the standard looks better than the scuba though.
Edit: You could also put the watch on a NATO. A lot of people on this subreddit are against it, but it's good if you don't want the bling of a metal bracelet. Also you can change out the colors for different outfits, and if they get dirty you can just wash them with your clothes, good as new.
I'd recommend something like this Hamilton Jazzmaster or the Tissot PRC200. Careful with the latter, as they are often faked.
Given that, I would also tell your friend that his lawyer buddies will probably not be impressed with these watches, as their budgets will be considerably higher.
Others have suggested G5600 but there is a Glide model with tide times & mode phase, useful for surfers.
Other options are the red G7900 or more subtle. The G9000 mudman is for those into muddy outdoor activities; I really like the round buttons.
My work watch. I got it as a gift back in 2000, I'm surprised they still sell it.
Also I'll wear this every now and again, but the weight gets to me after awhile.
Also, when I was in 7th grade my dad bought me this watch(first one on left) as a gift. Shows the early planting of geeky seeds because why would a 7th grader need this watch? I didn't, but I thought it was the coolest watch ever created, evar.
if you make that with an all-red or all-white body (kinda like the g shocks), i'd love that.
(Ninja?) Edit: here's the red one. it's on my to-buy list
I bought an SRP775, and i absolutely love it.
I was hell bent on getting a SKX007 but i started looking at pictures of the SRP775 and stalked Amazon for sales, picked one up for $260.00, the watch is fantastic
Oh those I mentioned have pretty good reputations(I only have personal experience with the Deep Blue, but from forums the others I mentioned seem to be held in regard), but there is a wide world out there of people who put ETA or Miyota or Seiko or Sea-Gull movements into dive-style cases and sell the end product for <$500. Some of those people are making legit small batch watches. Others are making fake Rolexes. Others are essentially selling modded Invictas for 3x market price. So if you go off into the world of boutique divers, just do your homework.
The standbys are standbys for a reason, and you can get a last-generation orange face Mako with a rubber strap for $100 shipped today if you want something cheap enough to be disposable that still satisfies (most of) your bullet points. The black face is like $125 elsewhere on Amazon, but blue and pepsi dials for the Mako are getting tough to find because of the product line switchover
I'm also finding it difficult to find one. How do you feel about Citizen?
BM6730-56L
BM6400-00E
CB0020-50E
BM7100-16E
BV1080-18A
Not automatic but still they're solar powered so no battery changes, and accuracy. I'm thinking about this diver too, BN0000-04H. They all look better than the amazon pic, up close
edit:might also check out Christopher Ward. They make pilot watches
No, I can't. Timex is well known for dominating the extreme low end of the market in terms of quality/price. All I'm saying is that I think it looks bad and for a casual watch I'd suggest something else, even a different Timex. You might have to be willing to spend 100 dollars on a watch, which for reference, is a very low amount for a watch. You can have your cheap digital watch for sports and a nicer one for day wearing. Personally, I love the look of plain chronographs, so for a casual watch I'd recommend something like:
http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-T17151632-T-Sport-PRC200-Watch/dp/B000B7MBHM/ref=sr_1_4?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1345131884&sr=1-4&keywords=tissot+chronograph
or
http://www.amazon.com/Timex-T2N701DH-Intelligent-Quartz-Series/dp/B0053EXKVE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT11_S?ie=UTF8&coliid=IZ3S0WFW7TA3Q&colid=1GOTTUYR2DTX4
The least you could do is upgrade to a Seiko 5, which will cost you 50 dollars more and look much better. Or even a Timex Expedition! Just 10 dollars more and it looks so much better than a Weekender.
If you hunt you can get an SRP775 or SRP777 for $350 or so
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SRP775-Automatic-Diver-Stainless/dp/B01AMI4GWC?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0
Basically an upgraded version of the SKX (much better bracelet, hacking and hand-winding movement). One of my favorites in my collection.
Great News: Orient.
This Orient Ray is 41.5mm http://www.amazon.com/Orient-Black-Automatic-Watch-CEM65008B/dp/B007BF61GO/ref=sr_1_2?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1394850903&sr=1-2&keywords=mako
This Orient Mako (not on a bracelet) is 41mm and a mere $104 and has an automatic movement http://www.amazon.com/Orient-CEM65004B-Black-Automatic-Rubber/dp/B001EWEQ4E/ref=sr_1_1?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1394850815&sr=1-1&keywords=orient+mako
Seiko Orange Monster ... The best $200 you will ever spend.
Tissot PRC200
I own a PRC200 with a blue dial, and love it.
I love the Citizen Ecodrive Calibre 2100.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000EQTXXA/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
I have that watch with a white face/dark brown bracelet. It definitely has a sizable case. Not for little wrists. I quite like it.
I just picked up the SARG005 Automatic from Seiko. It's rugged, yet presentable. Tanner Goods makes an awesome Natural Shell Cordovan Nato Watch Strap, and it looks incredible with the watch.

Surprised no one has mentioned Orient's orange mako. An excellent entry-level automatic, and many here will vouch for its quality. It's on Amazon for $120 with a black rubber band: http://www.amazon.com/Orient-CEM65004M-Orange-Automatic-Rubber/dp/B001EWEQ58/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382678761&sr=8-2&keywords=orange+mako
My current daily watch is an omega dynamic that I'm very happy with.
It's expensive, but seiko makes some similar watches in your price range.
Or, another low budget favourite of mine is the orient ray. It's a decent quality, nicely designed diver.

I'm looking at buying a Seiko dive watch to start my collection and for the life of me cannot find any differences between these two watches outside of the model year. If someone could give me some input or tell me why I should spend the extra money that would be greatly appreciated
Model 1
Model 2
Then take the black version of Seikos "Sea Urchin" . Best Submariner-on-a-budget that has enough of its own character to not just look like a rip-off.
Unfortunately, the bracelet is where a lot of the low end watches skimp at. There are some good options though.
If you want an automatic, I would go with an Orient Mako (although the endlinks and pins are a little cheap) or a Seiko Monster.
If you want quartz, I would look at the Casio Edifice line or maybe a Bulova Precisionist. Tissot Classic Dream if you want something a little fancier.
This is just a starting point, read the sidebar and search around until you find something that suits you. Also, if possible try on as many watches in person to really get a feel for what you like.
Sure. They're a lot more expensive than they were back then, but every one is available somewhere as far as I know. This one isn't a good example - it was a LNIB sold for an OK BIN price on eBay - but they're available.
SKZ325
SKZ327
SKZ329
SKZ323
SKZ330
Every one is available.
I know. I'm lukewarm on dive watches, but I really like the deep, saphire blue of the Ray. They have it on Amazon, but with a rubber strap.
Going with this subreddit's hivemind (which in this case is quite correct) I would suggest Seiko. Maybe something like a Seiko 5 or a Black Monster?
Also my personal dream watch (I dream small), unfortunately unavailable here in the UK, Maratac Pilot.
I'd have thought people would recommend the mudmaster. It's a huge watch, altimeter/ barometer/ compass, anadigi, totally bombproof. Expensive, though. https://www.amazon.com/CASIO-G-SHOCK-MUDMASTER-GWG-1000-1AJF-Japan/dp/B012FC5I4I It's also got a little brother https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DTJNCOE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483832364&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=mudmaster&dpPl=1&dpID=51XBYSszTFL&ref=plSrch with just as much toughness, sans a few features.
Could someone advise me on which of these two watches would be better:
Seiko 5 SNZF17
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IBF15Y?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A1M5EIC3PTHQ2U
Or
Orient Ray Blue

I plan to change the strap so that doesn't make a difference, I'm also not planning to actually go diving with either of them so it's more about the looks. I however don't know anything about watch quality or watch movements and the online reviews weren't really conclusive.
That Timex Expedition is really good looking.
I'm sorry this will be outside of your budget, but my first choice would be an Eco Drive.
Check the Bulova 96A102 and Stuhrling.
If I am not mistaken, Nautica is manufactured by Timex and they have made models in this style.
it could be unisex, but it's definitely not a big man's dive watch
Do you mean in addition to the Seiko SNDA65, or do you want less or more expensive, larger or smaller ? Do you like the all-black look, or the chronograph?
Here are some chronographs that are similar to it.
Seiko SNN237
Timex Expedition Chrono

Though to give recommendations without knowing what kind of watch he'd be into. Even tougher since it has to compete with a Rolex.
You are in kind of a tough spot, because he won't be wearing the watch during the week, so an automatic is a bad choice. On the other hand, quartz watches are less interesting (my opinion) so he might as well be wearing the G-shock.
If you think he wouldn't mind the PITA of restarting/setting the watch every Friday, I would consider a Seiko Monster. In my opinion, it is the most iconic watch under $250. Also available in Orange.

Some prices seem a little high, albeit most of them are out of stock everywhere and I imagine they won't be in stock any time soon. Except for the G-Shock, you can pick one up on amazon for a bit less than $70

I'm not a fan of quartzs and/or chronos, so I'd say that if these are your only 2 options, then go for the Orient - although I think the double crowns look a bit odd.
Although this one's not a 'nice' watch, it's an automatic, it can take a beating, looks cool, has incredible lume, screw-down crown, uni-directional bezel, and is a must-have for any new watch collector on a tight budget:
Seiko Black Monster
Seiko Orange Monster
Lastly, don't overlook Raymond Weil for a nice watch in the $500 price range - Amazon is full of them.
