I had a 64 degree S from mid to lower so I got away with only needing a section fused. The surgeon, in London 23 years ago when I was 19, drilled and bolted me from the inside of the rib cage. This was so I could keep more mobility and stay semi-active. Compared to having hooks between or above shoulder blades and not leaning forward/side/twist as much anymore. Depends on the severity. My scar looks like a side swipe from a Katana. Belly button around to under my shoulder blade, left side. Bar itself is like 7", fusing 5 verts, bolts are just long enough to go through the thickest diameter. Years later the first free discs have been crapping out on me because they now had to take the brunt of those 5 top and bottom.

Before surgery I had the option of using/giving my own blood. Like, give a quart every week(or two I forget) beforehand. But I was living in Kitchener at the time so London was a bit of a cruise. The friggin specialist that arranges the blood draw would only accept blood drawn at his location. Couldn't draw it locally and post it to the blood bank at the London Hospital for some damned reason. Somebody mis-labeled something 34 years ago and are still paying off the law suit. I digress...

After surgery I was fitted for a brace. Two girls one bucket of plaster... and cast tape stuff. Two weeks on my back in the hospital then 4 weeks on my back at home. Needed a cane and heavy wall leaning to truck to the Loo. If I even moved a wrongly, and god help me if I sneezed, the muscles would totally spaz out. k, they(every back muscle) were so used to the curve were now stretched on one side and way over-slack on the other. The over-slack side would spasm and twist up into this huge knot of twitching fury for 10mins a pop. Time and physio did help with that but it took months to settle downand even out. The now stretched side wasn't happy either btw.

So yea, after four weeks back at home the brace arrived(woo). They used the plaster mold from the hospital to form it to me. It opened in the back, held closed with straps. From resting on my hip bones to my arm pits. Yay I could walk down the street and back with a cane, then around the block, *insert rocky theme song*, went back to work six months later. Small offset printing presses at the time.

Get your own Physiotherapy equipment right now, or as soon as you can. For me 20+ years ago physiotherapy was covered by OHIP until they dropped it 18 years ago. $40-60 per physio session twice a month now has to come out of your pocket. Screw that! If you've never been maybe go to one or two, or watch youtube vids, either/or.

I'm getting a Pilates rig and I can't really justifying fitting both in my apt. plus I installed a bar and gravity boots to deal with my back issues so I can still hang upside down. But if you are not used to gravity boots it's really easy to get stuck, so inversion tables are great if you sit at a desk all day, you can tether it to control how far back it goes or release the tether and just hang upside down, so for people not comfortable with stuff like this, it's really safe and easy, also its in immaculate shape. I'm little so no structural stress issues. I think it goes up to 300 lbs? the link has the specs.
All you have to do is PM me a time to pick up and have fun lugging it down a 3 story walk up.
But it really does work great, I'm just switching it up and will take my chances being stuck hanging upside down from a bar, I'll put my cell phone in reach.

I, too, have a "broken" back - herniated/dessicated discs in the L4/L5 area, and also stenosis of the C4/C5 discs. Not fun.
I've spent years going to chiropractors, because I also don't want surgery. Some have been helpful, some not as much. I was going to one in NYC 3 times a week at one point, and that helped...but I still wasn't great.
I did two things, however, that did help a lot. I signed up for tae kwon do classes, and stuck with them for the 3.5 years it took to get my black belt. All that stretching helped immensely - on top of that, I dropped over 100 pounds, which also helped immensely. I also got an inversion table.
The table is by, far, and away the very best thing I've done for my back. I hang for 4-5 minutes a day, and that's all it takes. It's not an instant fix, but over time it does make a huge difference. From time to time, the sciatica will be so bad that I can't tie my shoes - hang upside down for 5 minutes, and then it's not a problem any more.
Even if you can't get to a full 180 degree inversion, it can help. I've gotten to the point where when I hang, it's literally by my ankles - I don't have any other contact with the table. It can be a bit disconcerting at first - I tend to get a pressure in my jaw that can take a minute or two to go away, but it is absolutely worth sticking to.
I highly recommend this one, which is the one I have.

Good luck, and go slow with this some people get really uncomfortable inverted. It never bothered me, and that probably helped. But I was also desperate for the pain relief. Stick with it, and go very easy at first. I started with no weights and inverting for a minute, using two chairs to get up. In a few months I got to hanging from my hands and lifting myself to inverted in one move. It became something I looked forward to.
BTW, thanks for asking the question, this reminded my how desperate a condition I was in, and how effective this was. I was taking my back health for granted.
Also, I “graduated” to a roman chair which is mostly what i do for my back now. They have cheaper ones on Amazon. But first very patient inversion... be careful and stick with it.
Bought one of these a year and a half ago. It does work and the relief seems almost instantaneous when you tilt back. I only tilt back to around 30 degrees, but find it works well and is so much more comfortable than hanging almost upside down.
You don't have to commit to a class or teacher, a lot of studios have teachers that would be willing to do a one on one, or ask them to guide you for your first time to make sure you are doing it correctly, poses like these are hard to know if your doing it right with our being able to see yourself.
At the very least try to have a spotter when you are first learning head/shoulder stands in case something goes wrong, they can help you up and down or be able to call for help if you hurt yourself.

I've been using these for a while and they work wonders for me. You hang yourself upside down from a chin-up bar and let gravity stretch your back out. While you're up there, simply work you back through its normal range of motion, and your whole vertebral column will feel much better. Also, you can do sit-ups from this position, which will quickly give you a very strong core.

There's nothing cheap about that setup. By the time you buy all the nipples, couplings, and fittings you could probably buy a better one at the local sports store.
I prefer the ones with the brackets that you screw inside the door opening. They're a lot safer IMO. I've used the same one since the early 1980s that I got with a pair of inversion boots and it's still in good shape. I have replaced the screws, though, because after moving a few times the screw heads were too marred to use.

Gorilla Gym sells a crazy secure system. They even sell a swing attachment for kids! The reason cantilever systems fail is that you jump or swing which unseats the bar rotationally or vertically before your weight can pull it down into secure position. If you dont jump or push up cantilever systems are fine. However Gorilla Gym prevents that from happening even if you do by adding additional lateral supports that keeps the bar from rotating or moving up. Our inversion table lets me do exactly what you're looking for. I don't go upside down, just a little past horizontal and then push with my elbows. It is similar to this one:

I got this one for $91
I like it. Can feel it slowly coming along. Was very sore the other day after doing a pile of dishes. Got on the inversion table and what a relief afterwards. It didn't totally take the pain away but it was was way more manageable than after any other time I did the dishes.
