Reddit mentions: The best tactical flashlights

Most people will probably recommend an AR-15, a 12-guage pump shotgun, or a 9mm pistol; but I've actually been moving away from those types of guns after I started to learn more about how much permanent damage firearms do to your hearing. If you ever shoot an AR-15 or a shotgun indoors without hearing protection, you'll probably rupture your eardrums and hear an annoying ringing sound for the rest of your life. So, I'd prefer to avoid that if possible. That's why I recently bought a 9mm carbine (a 9mm rifle with a shoulder stock and a 16-inch barrel) as my new primary home defense weapon. Yeah, you lose out on some terminal performance (killing power), but 30-ish rounds of 147-grain 9mm Federal HST should be enough to deal with 99.999% of home invaders.

An AR-15 chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO will create about 167 decibels (anything above 140 decibels will permanently damage your hearing); a rifle chambered in .308 Winchester will create 170+ decibels; a 9mm pistol with a 4-inch barrel will create about 160 decibels; a 9mm carbine with a 10-inch barrel will create about 156 decibels; and a 9mm carbine with a 16-inch barrel will create about 152 decibels. I haven't been able to find reliable information about how many decibels a 12-gauge shotgun creates, but it's probably in the 160s.

152 decibels still isn't hearing safe; but the difference between 152 decibels and 167 decibels is huge since sound doubles in strength every 3 decibels. 152 decibels will still hurt your ears and cause permanent hearing damage if you hear it repeatedly; but it won't completely destroy your ears like a 5.56x45mm rifle or a 12-gauge shotgun will.

And the reason why I went with a 9mm carbine over a 9mm pistol is because carbines are much easier to aim, you get much quicker followup shots, you get a little bit more bullet velocity (and thus foot-pounds of energy and terminal performance), and there's still a large sound difference between 152 decibels and 160 decibels.

As to which specific 9mm carbines I recommend, I'll give you 3 different options to choose from.

The cheapest option: The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 Gen 2 ($500-ish but hard to find). I'm personally not a fan of Kel-Tec quality standards and aesthetics, but the Kel-Tec Sub-2000 is one of the few firearms that Kel-Tec makes that the vast majority of people in the gun community agrees is a good gun. I'd get the version that accepts Glock magazines and stick a 33-round Glock magazine in it. Glock magazines are widely regarded as being the best magazines in the world; and the 33 rounders that they make are widely regarded as being reliable.

The mid-tier option: The CMMG Mk9LE ($900-ish). From the research that I did on AR-15s chambered in 9mm, the ones made by CMMG are highly regarded as being reliable. I recommend using the 32-round Uzi magazines from IWI. Based on your criteria, this would be my top recommendation for you.

The high-tier option: The KRISS Vector GEN II CRB ($1,300-ish). This is the option that I personally went with. I chose it because it's reliable and because it looks amazing.

I also want to go out of my way to rule out a popular option: The CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Carbine. The "pistol" version is wildly popular; but I've personally seen way too many horror stories about all-polymer magazines stretching and breaking their own feed lips after being stored loaded for a long period of time (which is what you'd be doing with a home defense weapon). So, until CZ upgrades their polymer magazines with steel-reinforced feed lips (like Glock does), I'd personally stay away from their products that use those types of magazines.

And I know that you said that you didn't want to add accessories, but a light is a mandatory accessory on a home defense firearm in my opinion (so that you can positively identify your target before you shoot and therefore hopefully avoid accidentally shooting a loved one). The Streamlight ProTac 2 and the INFORCE WMLx would be my top 2 recommended lights for long guns.

As to which bullets that I'd recommend, I already mentioned them: 147-grain 9mm Federal HST (standard pressure). The 124-grain 9mm Federal HST (standard pressure) is also extremely good. I wouldn't hesitate buying and using either of them for home defense. This website will help you find them in stock.

I also highly recommend this accessory in order to make loading your pistol magazines much, much easier.

As to bullet overpenetration, all major rounds will zip right through several of the kinds of walls that you'd find in a typical home. The only "safe" option is birdshot (used in shotguns), but birdshot doesn't penetrate deep enough into the human body (you want 12 to 18 inches of penetration according to FBI tests) to reliably stop a home invader (and therefore birdshot obviously shouldn't be an option for home defense in my opinion). Don't listen to the people that will tell you that the 5.56x45mm NATO round is safer to use because it tends to tumble and fragment when it hits a wall. It will still penetrate through several walls. You just have to be careful about how you angle your shots. That's really your only way to avoid hitting innocent people.

And if you're not as worried as I am about permanently damaging your own hearing while defending your home, then the Smith & Wesson M&P15 SPORT II would be my top rifle recommendation (I recommend pairing it up with 30-round magazines from Lancer); the Mossberg 500 series of shotguns would be my top shotgun recommendation; and the full-size Smith & Wesson M&P9 would be my top pistol recommendation. And I'd pair them up with this electronic hearing protection if I was you.

As to ammo recommendations for the 3 options that I listed above, I recommend Hornady 75-grain BTHP T2 TAP (8126N) or Hornady 5.56 NATO 75-grain BTHP Superformance Match (the .223 version that Hornady makes is also fine); this Managed-Recoil 8-pellet 00 buckshot from Remington (it patterns very tightly); and the 147-grain 9mm Federal HST that I already mentioned above, twice.

And if you go with a pistol, then I recommend the Streamlight TLR-1 as a mandatory accessory.

As to lubricant, you can't really go wrong with Break-Free CLP.

I like my SRT5, but given the choice in the current market, I think I could save a few bucks on some alternatives. I do really like the control ring of the SRT5 and it is still unique in the market, but I don't think it's worth the extra price on top of some of these competitors.

• ThruNite TN12 (2014) - This guy is very new to the market but ends up being very similar to a Fenix PD35 at a lower cost. You also get the option of Neutral white tint.
  
  
• ThruNite Neutron 2C V2 - Similar to the Fenix E35 (below) this light has a single side switch for power and mode selection. Excellent value and brightness is on par with all of the others in this realm.

• Fenix E35 Ultimate Edition - This light is rather similar to the P10, except you have a single side switch for power and mode changes. Comes in at a great value, if you are OK with the UI.
  
  Out of the above I would basically narrow it down based on what UI you like the best, weighted with price as well. If you would like power and separate mode switches, you've got the TN12, P12, P10, and PD35 to choose from. For a better value with just a single switch there is the E35UE and Neutron 2C V2. Based on my preference and budget I would try to get the TN12 (2014) in neutral tint if you can find it. If I needed a quicker turnaround I'd probably go with the P12 at $60. These are based on my personal criteria, definitely have a look at the parametrek page for your parameters as well.

That's a nice compact option similar to the S&W in size but a bit nicer. This would probably be the best looking on the gun and it's an appropriate size. Plus it's a decent brand.

Here's a slightly longer version of the same light that's a good bit brighter.

I have this same model that's more budget oriented but it's very very bright. If you don't like it on the shotgun it would make a great normal flashlight (just remove the mount) It's a bit bulkier though so if it's going on a shockwave it might not be the way to go. Since it's so inexpensive it's not too big of a risk to try it out since you can use it as a normal light either way. It comes with two batteries and the charger too so that's pretty cool.

Let's be realistic - unless you are maybe 10ft or closer you are not going to blind anyone with a flashlight. What you will do is completely give away your position and where to hit you at center mass.

A tracer will give away your position, but the acetech ones (aside from the Lighter BT) use a purpleish UV light to make the BBs glow and it's harder to detect.

Either one works, really. I would like to make some suggestions:

There's also the TLR-4 which is considerably cheaper than the TLR-2.


I have no experience with the TLR-4 but I do have the TLR-3 (One without the laser) and I really like it a lot. Its lightweight and small but still very bright.

Saying that though, I really love the TLR-1s that my dad has. Its more durable and brighter than the TLR-3. Right now on amazon its on sale and I would buy it over the TLR-4. Its strobe function would be more useful than a laser.

Olight M2R But honestly any flashlight (preferably using an 18650 battery) will be extremely useful and I use mine many times throughout the day/night.

Keybars are also pretty useful, just bought my first one the other day and it really beats using a keychain.

Any good knife will also be useful. I personally carry a Benchmade 940 and I love it.

Ok, well we can start there. This is a relatively easy light to shop for because it really only has to do one, relatively simple thing. It will probably be your most expensive light though, in terms of price, weight, and post apocalyptic energy consumption. But since it’s a light you will use in life or death situations, you get what you pay for.

With a weapon as lightweight as an AR it is possible to use a handheld light in a pinch, but it’s annoying, and you end up giving up some of your weapon support, so a weapon mounted light is a small but significant advantage.

In terms of what to look for, I recommend something that isn’t too powerful. One mistake people make with lights is that they think brighter is always better, which is not the case. On a combat light, a bright light does give you more distance, and also can momentarily make it harder for your attacker to see. The primary trade off is that indoors, these lights will also cause too much splash back, which affects your vision. Since most of your critical fighting, whether against humans or zombies, will be in relatively close quarters, you want to make sure you get a light that’s bright, but not so bright you blind yourself. Brighter lights also tend to suck more power, which often makes them heavier, more likely to die in the middle of a fight, and of course in an off grid situation they will use up more of your limited electrical supply.

Now, what counts as “too bright” does depend on how concentrated the beam is, and different manufacturers measure output differently, but as a general rule of thumb I recommend somewhere in the 200-300 lumen range.

One problem you see with a lot of lights is that manufacturers often add way too many bells and whistles. This appeals to the marketing side of things, but it actually makes a light much more difficult to use under pressure. That’s very bad in a combat light. A good combat light should have two modes, “constant on” and “momentary on.” Those are fairly self explanatory. Any other features are not features, they are bugs. With any combat light, you will use momentary on almost exclusively most of the time, in very short bursts. This is primarily to make it more difficult for a human enemy to pinpoint your location in the dark, and can also help to disrupt their night vision if they are not used to it. But it is useful to be able to lock it into constant on mode in case you need to use the weapon one handed. Ideally, you want both functions to have discrete controls, so each button or switch only does one thing, and you cannot activate one when you mean to activate the other.

Keep in mind that for close quarters fighting, a lot of pistol mounted lights also make excellent rifle lights, and are often much lighter weight, which is important.

I’ll give you a few different options to consider, though there are a lot of great options out there.

This is an excellent all around light, and one of the best for the money. It will mount to any sort of rail on a pistol or rifle, takes 2 CR123 batteries (which do come in a rechargeable, though you may lose some power and battery life that way). On a rifle it’s perfectly usable with thumb switches, or if you prefer they sell an optional remote switch setup. These are one of the most common weapon lights used in law enforcement both for rifles and pistols, and I would not hesitate to trust one with my life.

This is a rifle specific light. They are very simple to use, and very ergonomic, which is important on a weapon mounted light. You need to be able to reach it easily. They have a momentary/constant on modes, but you can also flip a switch that will make it momentary only, which is useful, and they have a physical lock that you can use to prevent accidental discharge when not in use. (Accidental light discharge can be a problem on a rifle light because it will bump against your body/gear). There are several versions of this light, some of which are too bright or have features you don’t need or want, but some of which would work very well for your purposes. I have a version of this light on my own rifle.

Anything Surefire is going to last a lifetime. This model is right on the upper level of the brightness you would want, and it’s a single battery light which saves you some weight on the front of your gun. It takes a single CR123 battery, so rechargeables are an option. You may lose a bit of power, but like I said this is almost too much anyway, so that’s probably fine.

Or, if you want the cadillac option, there’s this one. https://www.surefire.com/m600ib-z68-bk-scout-light.html This is a big, relatively heavy, relatively expensive light, but it does have surefire’s “intellibeam” system, which is one of the few new flashlight technologies that is actually worth having. What it does is sense the amount of light being reflected back at the user, and adjust the intensity of the output automatically. So no matter what you point it at, near or far, you always get as much light as possible without blinding yourself. I have this on my work light, and it’s a game changer. You can use the same light to search a car or a closet that you use to shine across a field, all without requiring any additional thought or input from the user. So far surefire is the only one with something like this, and only on a handful of their lights, but at some point I have no doubt this will be considered an essential feature in a combat light. It’s that good.

This light does use 2 CR123 batteries, which is ok, though you will probably get a very short run time with rechargeables, even by the standards of a tactical light (which all have fairly short run times). However, I strongly suspect that surefire is currently working on a “dual fuel” version of this light, which would get much better performance with rechargeable batteries, and be able to use a rechargeable 18650 battery or CR123 batteries. Because keeping it charged would be a big deal in a zombie situation, it might be worth waiting until they come out with a version that is both “dual fuel” and “intellibeam.” My (handheld) work light has both, and they are both worth having, in my opinion.

Many handheld lights can also be made into a weapon light with the addition of a rail mount. This is a cheap and reliable option, though these lights are often fairly heavy. Also keep in mind that not all handheld lights are designed to withstand recoil so even if you have a very high quality light you want to check before using it as a weapon light.

Depending on which version of the Ruger you have, you will need to either get an MLOK rail section, or you can get a rail mount that attaches to an A2 front sight post, like this. How/where to light the mount tends to depend on your personal preferences and shooting style, so there are a million different ways to set it up. You just have to find something that’s easy to use for you.

If you aren’t carrying a pistol, which most people won’t need, then you probably won’t need a handheld combat light, so the weapon light will be your biggest ticket item.

GG&G for the rail. It's about the cheapest non-hokey solution; they make a magazine cap spacer for the 870 that has a sling mount and Picatinny rail on it. I have one (870 mount on a Remington Model 11) and it's great, and puts a light with a tailswitch right where your left hand would need to be to operate it.

Lightwise, Streamlight makes good stuff. Alternately, Surefire mil-surp stuff that ends up on ebay. Specifically, I'd go with this or a used Surefire 951. The 951 is old tech and the bulb doesn't last nearly as long as modern stuff, but for something you're going to function check once a month it's perfectly adequate.

Let the haters hate. If you want a light/laser combo, get one. I like mine. I shoot well, but thought hey, might be fun to have a laser.... and it is fun. It has a toggle so you can select to use just the light, use both, or just the laser. Its bright enough for HD without being too blinding.

I picked mine up for like $90. If you get this now, you'll still have enough $$ for several hundred rounds of training ammo to get familiar with your new laser/light!

Dude, I just bought that Feyachi light, but with picatinny mount. I know most people here turn their noses up at budget gear, but for $30, this thing is really terrific. I'm not in combat, I'm not placing my life in its hands. I just want to be able to compete in low light competitions here and there, and this thing is perfect for that.

The brightness is more than I expected. Took it out to my pitch black back yard when I first got it, and it was light an F'ing search light. Lit up the yard and scared away two rabbits.

Comes with TWO rechargeable batteries, only uses one so you have a backup... nice. Mount is lightweight and sturdy. The big negative is the tape switch. Real flimsy, and the cord is like 100 yards long. I didn't bother mounting it, just use the clicky-bit on the end of the light.

If you want that SF (I love Surefire stuff for sure) then that's great.

For the record, I don't find my OTR to be inferior to my Olight an any way besides aesthetics personally, but that's fine. If you want brand name but reasonably compact, the Olights are not a terrible choice.

The S2 Baton is what the M6 was designed after and gives you a good 950 lumens max, but is a bit over your price range. The have the M18 Maverick as well which is more affordable, but you're looking at about half the max output.

There are also lights like the Fenix E35UE but it doesn't have a pocket clip (though you can likely use most any generic 18650 light clip) or perhaps the Nitecore P10, but it is somewhat larger, and Nitecore tends to use some lower frequency PWM that some people dislike.

To be honest, it's going to be more difficult to find a good "brand name" light that performs well in your price bracket; I find that you can mostly only get the entry level products from most of them while the lesser known (but not necessarily inferior) lights will provide more.

EDIT: I did not confirm compatibility with the longer cells you have mentioned in your OP with these lights.

If you're trusting your life to a budget red dot that is the way to go, 50,000 hours of battery life so you never have to turn it off.
I've heard good things about that light as well and own a TLR myself (made by the same company) and its great, that mounting option attaches directly to the front sight post so you don't need a new hand guard, if you do want a quad rail though I recommend this, I have an MI quad rail on my rifle and its rock solid.

However, there is also a similar looking $70 Surefire Sidekick that some people consider perfectly "reasonable" -- it has more output and is American-made.

Have you checked Armytek availability? I would recommend the Wizard Pro, I have it and love it, but they make other great lights. Nitecore has the P12 that would be a good choice, but no personal experience there.

There were slightly cheaper ones with a red laser (or ever cheaper without the laser too) but I liked this one. Installation was a snap and it functions great so far, now I just need to get some range time with it!

That 18650 battery will work in any light that uses 18650s. As someone pointed out, that particular battery brand is junk and their cells are dangerous. If you get a decent light with an included battery that should be fine. If it's not included, you can order good 18650 size cells from Illumn.com, liionwholesale.com, or mtnelectronics.com.

I think the other user was asking if that flashlight's charging port fits in a particular Streamlight charger. I have no idea if that's the case, but most any 18650 cell can be charged outside the flashlight in a charger.

Some good suggestions for lights have been made here, and any of them should serve your dad well. The surefire scouts are nice but they're a rip off. I've used both, and have the streamlight on my rifle now. It's 625 lumens and comes with everything needed to mount it to a pic rail with a tape switch. The surefire doesn't come with a switch OR tail cap, they bang you for both of them separately

Pair that with the magpul offset mount which screws directly into the mounting hardware on the streamlight with two screws and mounts directly to your mlok rail and you have an awesome light for $120

I have the tlr4 on my 229 and I can't say enough good things about it and I also have the full size 320, but I have the Romeo1 RDS on it so I kinda don't need the laser. I'm opting for the tlr1 for myself. For what you're looking for I'd suggest the tlr2g. Kinda pricey imo but it's what you're looking for. Good luck brother

Okay, so in my opinion your best bet is to either do what /u/JustARandomCatholic suggests, or to get an FN-15 tactical with the P-Lok rail and get an Aimpoint PRO and either an Inforce WML or a used Surefire 951 off ebay and a Malkoff M61 drop-in LED bulb.

I actually had a 16" wide one rigged up with a 12volt gel cell battery and a PVC frame I made out of 3/4" PVC pipe to carry it in. It was super bright and rather portable for what it was. Used it for finding downed deer in the dark.

I drive for UPS and just purchased this flashlight off of Amazon for around $60. I use it everyday while out delivering to see addresses in the dark. It has really good throw, adjustable brightness, bottom click for on/off, durable (dropped it out the truck a few times...) and it not too big.

I got an extra battery so I could have one handy, but it seems like the 18650 it comes with holds a lot of power, because I've yet to need to switch it out with my other one. The kit I linked comes with a charger and a 18650 battery, but I believe there's cheaper options.

I've actually never bought any lights other than the mini-mags and large mags, and one or two specific backpacking lights (ie a super light lantern I can hang from inside a tent).

Here you go only surefire light I have. Someone convinced me it was the best. With the tape switch and the end cap it is more than $300.00.


All of my other rifles have this. The Streamlight product also includes the cap for the tape switch and the tape switch itself. The beam is not as focused at distance but considering most people are going to be in an HD situation at 25 yards and under for the price difference it is a fine light.

I just got a Duracell Durabeam and it has a 1000 lumen output. I have not used this yet as it is still on the way. It has 3 modes high/low/strobe and runs off of 4 c-cell batteries. But I have trusted Duracell for many years and they have never let me down. It does not take rechargeable batteries. But the best part is, it's only 23$ and it comes from an American Company (It is made in China) and you don't have to wade through the endless amounts of junk stuff. 35 hours on low, 2 hours on high, and throws a beam 380 meters and waterproof to 15m.

Here's a good Streamlight for around $100... They can go for a little more, and a little less. If you're really set on getting a laser, this may be a good option for you.

I've been carrying a Surefire Sidekick for a few weeks and I love it. It's a bit large for keychain carry, I've got mine on a retractable lanyard clipped to a belt loop. But it's incredibly bright, compact, and rechargeable via Micro USB. A bit pricey, but I use it multiple times a day for work and I've found it to be worth the money.

I've never seen a quality pen & light combo in one, but then again I've never really looked. Have you considered a Fisher Space pen, and a small AAA flashlight? Both are compact, inexpensive, and usually of good quality.

My job also requires me to look into manholes at times. During the middle of the day, when your eyes are not dark-adapted at all, this requires a fairly intense light. That is, one with a lot of throw, rather than just a lot of total lumens.

I use a Convoy C8 XP-L HI for this, but that's too large to stick through your catch basin grates. The beam itself can certainly penetrate, and if the light is pressed up against the grate there should be no distracting glare. I'd suggest the U6-3A tint for daytime use.

If you want to keep the diameter below 1.5", the Klarus ST15 looks like a solid option. The Nitecore P10GT is slimmer yet with comparable performance.

I have a TLR4 with all keys except USP mount and an extra batter and maybe a extra bulb if I can find it for $80.

I'm not sold on the nightcore. I love my Olight i3S and the battery life is insane for a single AAA battery.

The biggest thing that's making me want the BeFree is supposedly the flow rate is faster than you can drink, blowing away the Sawyer Squeeze.

I used it for carry for 1 of the 3 months, but the bulk in my pants (insert joke here) was uncomfortable, so I removed it.

Nonsense. Virtually all of the points that you made are completely moronic. Lasers do indeed make aiming quicker and easier. They're also not hard to see and they're not hard to turn on. They also don't have to be perfectly zeroed to be effective in a typical self-defense scenario. And they are indeed extremely intimidating. And in order to avoid the batteries dying on you, simply change them every 6 months just like with your weapon light (which use the same battery with a laser/light combo).

Use common sense and your own experience when deciding what to use for self-defense. If you feel that a laser will help you, then ignore the faux-expert forum/reddit idiots and go for it.

Something like this should work great for most people.

Now, I'm not saying that I believe that all firearms should have lasers on them. I really only think that lasers make sense for genuine military and police operators since it allows other members of your team to target a hostile. I also don't really think that lasers are needed for home defense guns, either. A simple light attachment is much more practical. But there's still no real downside to putting a laser on your home dense gun. It's simply a matter of personal preference.

Assuming one of these, that's the best answer. This will outperform LiFePO4 16340s by a significant margin, especially if you use the unprotected Sanyo UR16650ZTA and a 4.35V charger. Of course, it's on you to avoid over-discharging the unprotected battery.

I've got one of these as one of my many cheap junk flashlights, which would be more or less appropriate for 50' throw, which i'm assuming is about what you have.

Don't spend $100+ on a flashlight for this. You can rent an actual spotlight for less than that.
