I’m an mechanic and and owner as well so I see both sides. Your intuition is right to get it out, it’s going to suck but the peace of mind is worth it.

Not sure if you already have some but some mechanical fingers will help you as it gets closer to getting it out.

The fuel will be a double edge sword, it will enable the float to float, but once it’s floating it’s going to move all over. My recommendation is once you get a visual on the float, try to grab it a bit with the fingers. If that doesn’t work get it positioned within the ribbed compartment of where the fuel cap is and drain the tank. Once the fuel is out of the compartment the float won’t be so easily moved and will be easier to grab with mechanical fingers, a bent coat hanger, what ever it takes to try to get the float close to the fuel cap.

In regards to draining the tank, obviously you can use the fuel drains but that will take forever and is kinda messy. I’d recommend purchase a siphon to speed it up. My favorite go to is the super siphon because it’s got a glass marble on the end to prime the line you just shake it up and down so there’s no drinking fuel and it has great flow once started. It comes in handy for jobs like this or say you decide to bring the extra person but your tanks are topped you can cleanly drain fuel into 5 gallon cans to shed the excess fuel. I know it says unavailable but look around the farm supply stores, home improvement stores, etc and you’ll be able to find one if you want that brand.

Not sure about the waterproof on the borescope you have. Depending on the unit it might not be waterproof but I’d check with the manufacturers specs to get an idea.

So the bad news will be if that float doesn’t float your going to have to go even deeper and remove sheet metal to find it. I imagine if your fuel tank indications were normal or at least somewhat working(at least reads full or close to it when full) it will float. This is rare but can happen.

Good luck, happy fishing!

If you end up getting the EX-L here's how I accessorized:

Scuff plates - I liked the scuff plates in the Touring (which are backlit) so I bought these. Not backlit but look great, really look like a first-party install.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BSQDQH5/

bumper protector - looks sharp and happens to have a similar hexagon pattern to the scuff plates so they look good as a set

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079P88CPT/

fob case - pink for the wife, black for me - the ex-l has seat memory based on the fob you are using, so makes it easy to tell them apart

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DBXC134/

console liners - these are great! cover up every single cupholder and surface in the car

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078MRYNXQ/

screen protector - the screen is so big on the cr-v i think a cover is mandatory

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CVYHZV9/

I also got a custom windshield cover, the side trim, and the splashguards from handa accessories and self-installed them, happy with all of them.

I don't know what that dash cam is, but I have this one:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRGY1IO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_tcZozbJYGM9WJ

It has GPS, sound, and great video. I think Garmin has a newer one that is smaller, but this one is just fine. It also suction cups to the window, so you can take it off easily and you don't have to stick anything to the windshield permanently. You can take it out and take pictures with it, also.

Funny enough, between my husband and myself, we have recorded 5 accidents (not us, but people in front of us) since we got cameras. It's nice to be able to pull over, hand both parties a business card, and then provide them video if they ask. We got them because he was hit by a fraudster who tried to make a claim against us, and sued when USAA denied their claim. I can't stress enough how helpful having a camera in the car is to protect yourself! No matter what you buy, get a camera asap if you don't have one!

My little man (he's almost 5) and I have started geocaching together this summer. It is super fun for him to go on a treasure hunt and I love that it gets us outdoors and discovering new hiking trails. He would love these travel bugs. It would add some extra fun to be able to track his items too.

u/LvTsla5 · 37 pointsr/teslamotors

Isn't the Model S freakin amazing! It's smooth and beautifully designed.

This type of attack is being reported in the news over and over again - it's very much a problem and even happened to my cousin. When I saw it I got a fob faraday bag. OP posted the bag for $20 on Amazon but in my opinion that bag is NOT worth it. It's far too small to hold my entire key set and it failed on me after a month of use - very disappointing.

I got another bag on Amazon and it has worked like a charm. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01H1C21O2 It's a little more expensive but if im going to buy one of these bags I want it to actually work. It's been two months and this bag is working strong. It gives me peace of mind.

Actually it's pretty ridiculous we need to buy these things I feel like the car manufacturer should find a way to stop this. Anyway I'll report back later if the bag has any issues.

Update: Yes as a few people mentioned this is the mission darkness keyfob bag.

u/aria12 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

You are not the....

This for your car :)
Plus this is hilarious and awesome.

Thanks for the contest!

u/ModernVisage · 3 pointsr/answers

Well, I don't know all of the variants used.
I do know some old ones, some standard issue ones, and some advanced ones.

The tags used for pets are around the size of a grain of rice. Doubt you have one of those.
Check your jacket and try to make your room use less consistent.

Audio bugs could be used on your phone by taking control of your microphone. Yes, hidden services could use your location, they track the 'cells' your phone connects to every time you change areas or use it. A competent, well-equipped group could track your phone if it was off or in airplane mode. Take the battery out, or remove the GPS temporarily. Some people go as far as to disconnect their cameras and microphones when not using.
Though, these are tech savvy people. The easiest method is the occasional use and burner.

RFID blocking box
Shop around though, this one has mixed reviews. You also could check out a safe/discrete networking guide.
Or

Someone could install a small brick thing under your car, like what the FBI used to use.
A mechanic or trained eye would most likely notice. They were pathetically clunky in the day, but must be better, now that 'the internet of things' is beginning.

The best source of information, by far in this decade, is obviously a cell.
Most people are dependent on their phones.

The simple solution is to leave the item at home, if you're concerned, or, once again, get a throw away [burner].

I don't want to encourage unnecessary paranoia.

u/mfcimmg · 2 pointsr/mazda3

Prayers and good insurance? Keep the car super clean so there isn't anything appealing inside.

Maybe toss one of these on the dash? https://www.amazon.com/PerfecTech-Simulated-Anti-Theft-Flashing-Security/dp/B01IDC3O86/

u/boaratio · 17 pointsr/baltimore

First, sorry to hear that your car was stolen. That would make anyone feel awful. No one likes to feel like they're not in control - and being robbed of anything takes away that feeling of control.

Second, I'm sure you locked your car. This jackass most likely had a key fob range extender that just amplifies the signal from your house so the car thinks the keys are nearby. Auto manufacturers should be ashamed that their RF signals are one direction only, instead of a keyed bidirectional exchange, but oh well. I checked on my wife's new car (hers unlocks in a similar way) and there is NO WAY to turn this behavior off.

Anyways, anyone reading this should get a faraday cage for their keys to keep them in when you're at your house. This will prevent people from breaking in the easy way - like in this video. They'll have to resort to the old way of smashing a window. I don't own this one, but see here for a keyfob faraday cage on Amazon. Or this cheaper one as well.

FYI - I have nothing to do with that product, just did a quick Google to find an example.

Edit: According to your cars manual, if you had push button start, this is most certainly how this guy got in. See here for a screenshot of what I'm talking about.

Final Edit: Here is a more detailed explanation (and video) with cheaper DIY ways to prevent this from happening.

I've been using a Xena XX-14 for the couple of months that I've owned my bike, and I'm pretty happy with it. It will definitely go off if the bike is bumped, and when it does, it's loud.

u/1vs1meondotabro · 1 pointr/alameda

There are Catalytic converter clamps but they're pretty expensive. Best course of action is probably to complain to WETA that they need CCTV cameras there.

Trailer or box truck? If it's a box truck, the truck itself or the vehicle towing the trailer might be a bigger worry than the lock you put on the back. Most any good shrouded padlock (Abus Diskus 20/70 is good) will deter opening on site, plus unloading stuff from a uhaul takes time and stands out a bit.

If it's a trailer, make sure you have a good lock on the tongue of the trailer and hitch pin as well, since those are all points where it could be easily disconnected and moved to another vehicle in a matter of a minute or so.

More generally, and unfortunately though, the thieves just steal the whole vehicle if it's not too much trouble (and uhaul tends to have not always the newest fleet, so that can be fairly easy). So whether it's a box truck or towing a trailer, make an extra effort to secure the vehicle itself. If it's a rented truck, disconnect the battery. It won't stop someone, but it will slow things down, hopefully enough for someone to notice. You can also use a portable vibration alarm like this to alert you to tampering since you can't install your own security system. And get a room where you can park right out front.

u/ImmaPig · 2 pointsr/Volkswagen

You can buy replacement key fob cases, disassemble your key, and put the internals into the new case. The cases can be bought for around $10, but they're never great quality in my experience.

I just replaced the key body on my grandparents chevy equinox keys last week. The buttons literally wore off the keys and they couldn't reach the unlock button on the internal circuit board. The replacement parts holes for the pins of the flip key were off just enough that the flip key wouldn't lock open or closed. It took an hour of filing the pins down and drilling new holes in the replacement parts for the key to work properly.

It can be done, but it's a huge pain in the dick.

You could always cover up the worn key with a classy case like this.

Here's a case [Amazon] for the Mk6 Jetta. Before you go buying, I recommend watching a couple videos on how to take your key apart and actually try it so you can compare your internals to the case you’re buying. Good luck!

Ok, because it has to be a rechargeable battery that goes in there. That's what I'm wondering about too. I ordered this one:

HQRP Battery for 3-series BMW E46 E90 E91 E92 E93 LX8 FZV LX8FZV Key Fob KeyFob 90 Degrees Pins + Coaster https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IOK2QS2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_0.XTAb92P716R

I don't know if this will show up as a clickable link, I hope so.

Edit: seems like it is a link

u/spookyyz · 5 pointsr/LosAngeles

I believe most keyless (passive) entry systems do use a rolling code system. What these devices do is amplify the very low frequency (which is why you have to be so close) request emitting from your car and amplifies it in hopes the key will be in range of the amplified signal. The key fob on the other hand is fairly high frequency and can work at moderate range (think of the range when you actively push an event on the key fob) so if the key fob is in range of this amplified signal it will respond with its answer and the car will behave as if the key was in range.

Here's a more technical breakdown (and accompanying podcast if you'd like): https://www.grc.com/sn/sn-508.pdf

It is really kind of fascinating. I hope I didn't bungle my explanation of it too much, was going off memory.

Also, to stop said attacks, something like this (a Faraday cage) or many, many others similar to it should be used to house your key when you are in any sort of range of your car.

u/_derx · 1 pointr/f150

great question as I have been wondering the same thing. For my 2015 I've been hovering over this one:

There are cheaper versions out there, but it's only a couple hundos in parts and will save you the $2k a replacement costs.

Not sure, but I'm now tempted to buy one of these, keep it in the cupholder and hand it to whoever tries to carjack me, then bail.

u/TreacherousClutter · 1 pointr/homedefense

Would something like this be too bulky?

There's also the sleeve style meant for individual cards and passports, like this, which you could possibly use to craft something more suitable.

OP, are you in Albany Park/Andersonville/Ravenswood/Lincoln Square are? This shit is happening a lot up here. I would seriously consider getting a CatClamp after the you get it replaced and have some extra scratch. It won't stop them or anyone who's very determined, but it's enough for them to simply move to a different car after one look at it. If you park in the same area, these guys might come back, spot your car, and do it again. It happens.

u/MasterK999 · 1 pointr/cars

Get a Farady bag. It will also fully prevent any range extending car theft attacks.

u/rockbblues · 3 pointsr/prius

CatClamp Standard Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HPZTCMA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LvaSCbSKY56NG there’s a beefier version for twice the price. I didn’t opt for that since i felt it was unnecessary. Just make it as tight as possible because there was a rattle after I first installed it and after tightening it it was significantly less audible.

Some people shrouded the cable that wraps around the car in hose to remove the rattle but I didn’t want to bother with it.

u/tunersharkbitten · 2 pointsr/Toyota

line a cardboard box with thick aluminum foil. that is a very basic faraday cage.

personally i have a cheap faraday bag i got off amazon. there have been a couple people in my neighborhood that have gotten their cars stolen via repeater spoofing. didnt want MY brand new car to go the same route.
