Not this bullshit again.

Look at the first picture again. First, notice the white triangles immediately behind the car. Those are blind spots. Those are spots directly behind the corners of your car where you are undeniably blind, right? They look pretty small, though, so that should be ok, right? Well, there's another problem: they're a hell of a lot bigger than that image suggests. They're big enough to hide a bike, motorcycle, pedestrian, shopping cart, tree, etc. Notice how in the "right" image it shows the shaded area going all the way up to the side of the car? If the shading were actually correct, you'd be able to see the side of your car in your mirror. But they've made it very clear that you shouldn't be able to see the side of your car unless your head is all the way against the window, so that's simply not true.

I've corrected the image a bit to better reflect what this method is trying to get you to do. They're turning your side mirrors - which function perfectly for looking down the adjacent lane to the horizon - into mirrors that will show you a nice view of your blind spot and the guardrail on the side of the road, but nothing else.

But, that's not the worst part. Take a look at the second image again.

I've played with this a bit too. First, I drew red lines to indicate the field of view from the driver's side mirror, and more importantly, the blind spots between the side and rearview mirrors. Those blind spots don't look so big on the freeway. How about backing out of your driveway? Is it even possible for you to see the neighbor kid behind your car before he goes under your tires? How about that shopping cart with the toddler in it?

Next, I decided to see what kind of fun I could have with the rearview mirror by putting you in stopped traffic on the freeway with a big-ass truck directly behind you. Oops, now your rearview mirror sees nothing but a reversed MACK TRUCK logo. Yeah, it looks like a little yellow sedan, but it's actually a big honking truck and you can't see shit. Got to rely on your side mirrors for everything. The lane on the right seems to be moving pretty good. You see that green car about to pass you and you don't see anything behind it, so you're good to go, right? Well, if you had your right-side mirror adjusted as per figure 5, you'd be able to see that purple bus about 20 car lengths behind the green car. That bus is going to overtake you at 45mph in a couple seconds, but you don't even know it exists because you've taken OP's advice and you're absolutely sure that you don't have any blind spots.

The rear view from your side mirrors is infinitely more important than your blind spot in the adjacent lanes. You can look over your shoulder to check your blind sport. If you want to use your mirrors, you need only lean forward a bit. A better solution is to install wedge-shaped blind spot mirrors on the bottom inner corners of your side mirrors, giving you the same view that OP is trying to give you but without sacrificing the intended purpose of your side mirrors.

tl;dr: This method looks good at first glance, and it works well in light traffic, free of motorcycles on the interstate. Everywhere else, this method kills your situational awareness and makes you a greater danger to everyone behind you, especially pedestrians.

I like the BSM okay, but it's a complicated and expensive solution that is easily solved cheaply and mechanically with convex mirrors. As a bonus round convex mirrors let you see parking spot lines straight down beside the car. To me the BSM sensors are more useful when providing the rear-cross traffic alert.

They have been amazing! Super easy to install and configure and they're super stable, they don't wiggle around in the wind

Just got back from a 40 day road trip and they worked very well.

Highly recommend

Here they are:

Well that TV tower of yours has some good options. Does it clear the house? You could put a wire across the roof to a pole of some sort, Either run a full dipole or a random wire endfed and use the tower as a counterpoise, that would necessitate an RF choke so you're not radiating on the outer shield of your coax but perfectly doable.

Both your current plans are reasonable and shouldn't be discounted though.

If all else fails (and you're comfortable with climbing your tower, please be careful) you could always put a hamstick on a CB mirror mount up there as a vertical. You'd need to tune it properly which may require a few trips up and down mind you. Again, take appropriate safety measures.

I have these on my TJ. I just recommend replacing the giant hand-turned bolts with some hex head bolts, as they are easier to get really tight (the size you will need is M8-1.25, but I can't remember how long it needs to be). The ones that come with it are hard to tighten and may result in your mirrors folding back in at highway speeds. Aside from that, they are pretty sturdy. Took them out on the trail and even with all the shit that hit them, they didn't even bend.

I was just surprised in purchasing an after market outside rear view mirror for a relative's 2005 Pontiac Vibe (basically a Toyota Corolla).

Cost was $28 new from Amazon. The car is white but has exterior black accents so the mirror casing is black and the new mirror matches the original. Cars with color coded exterior mirrors will also need a custom mixed paint and seal coat kit at about $45.

In my case the relative has a mechanic who will install the mirror for $25. It's about a 30 minute job based on my viewing of a couple of YouTube videos on the same year and model car (have to completely remove the driver's door interior panel - easy once you see how on YouTube).

I'll follow up here once the mechanic has it installed and, I hope, working with the remote control.

Here is the link (they went up a couple of bucks since I ordered this last week)

Bought some โ€œcarbon fiberโ€ mirror caps for my 7.5 about a year ago. Took a little elbow grease and a few YouTube videos to get on but once they were on they look fantastic!

The only gripe I had with this one in particular was that the tabs on the inside which secure it to the mirror assembly are a lot thinner than the OEM ones so they didnโ€™t snap on as easily

For the price I am super surprised by the quality. Definitely very satisfied.

These are the best purchase I ever made. They cost pocket change and if you adjust everything right my blindspot is nonexistant. I watch cars go from my rear view to my side view to my blindspot (mirrors) to my peripheral vision. If there is a blindspot, its too small to make a difference.

Partly why I was thinking the 7 mirrors would be excessive but as op explained about people with limited upper body movement that makes sense.

They're also great for helping newer drivers learn how to back into spots since they can look at the lines and get a point of reference! Really helped my girlfriend out when she was learning

u/[deleted] ยท 3 pointsr/howto

It's that little tiny mirror that is stuck onto the main mirror. I use this type: http://www.amazon.com/Rectangular-Mirrors-Cars-Trucks-Suvs-Motorcycles-Shipping/dp/B004MVW0DS It is almost a wedge shape, which helps cover the area to the side of you (the entire blind spot area plus some)

There are tons of circular ones out there too.. they are a more popular aftermarket part. There are also some odd shaped ones http://0.tqn.com/d/autorepair/1/0/_/8/-/-/mirrors.jpg I have some circular ones on my motorcycle because the mirrors are square.

The main point is that this mirror is convex (bulging outward), so that you see a far wider range than you ever could with the standard flat side-view mirrors, at the cost of seeing everything distorted (looks like everything is more tall and thin). Just like those huge circular mirrors that department stores had before cameras were so prevalent. The opposite of a magnifying concave mirror.

In daytime its easy to make out a car in the tiny mirror, and at night you can see the little dots of their headlights. After a while, you naturally associate where in the mirror the car actually is in relation to yours, and then it becomes second nature to check while you're driving. But, i admit there is a bit of a learning curve until you are comfortable never looking over your shoulder again. Figure 1 to 4 weeks of driving. When you get to that point, you will wonder how you drove a car without them!

Also notable, a lot of new cars these days have these type of mirrors built-in: http://www.roadfly.com/new-cars/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/nissan-titan-side-view-mirror.jpg http://0.tqn.com/d/cars/1/0/Z/B/2/ag_11fiesta_mirror.JPG

It really is a worthwhile safety feature and very affordable! If you can avoid or minimize the time your eyes are off the road, you are more likely to catch danger before it becomes unavoidable. This becomes exponentially important when you're going faster... i.e. on the highway. I really dislike drivers that take their eyes off their road.. even if its quick. This easily reduces the time necessary to check your blind spots, while keeping the road in the corner of your eye.

Pro tip: if you like being alive, or if you like your kids being alive - always drive with your headlights on and also get these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DKT0DO

But hardly anyone does either. Keep being you, lemmings.

u/LAovo ยท 1 pointr/Lexus

Same thing happened to me. Lexus dealer told me $100 for the mirrr. I bought this from Amazon for $25 and would recommend it. It's a little smaller than the original but can barely notice he difference and works great for me.

Not worth it. I'm guessing you have a copay on your insurance? probably $500? Just google how to replace a side window. You have a 2013 corolla, one of the MOST popular cars out there. There are probably like 3-4 youtube videos showing you know to do it step by step.

Dude, it's $38 for non heated and 47 for heated.

I picked up these mirror relocation brackets from Amazon a few years ago. Makes it much nicer if you have the doors off all the time to be able to still have mirrors. I keep mine on all the time and just move the mirror back on the right door as it's hard to see it otherwise.

Nice Jeep!

Ty for responding

Is there any way to find the specific part to make sure it's a match?

Otherwise I have found this:https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Mazda-GS1E-69-1N1A-50-Mirror-Housing/dp/B00P3D2MXW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1/140-7407313-6953334?ie=UTF8&qid=1542654552&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=gs1e

It looks silver and seems to be a match I think. And it literally just clips on with no extra work needed? That's good at least

I'm running this on mine. I did have to grind about a 1/4" channel in the bracket for the lip on the windshield frame as well as elongate both holes by about 1/8" to get it to fit, though.

It vibrates a bit and has a bit of a whistle above 40mph, but I can't hear the whistle once I get above 50 anyway.

It's a blindspot mirror. I've encountered plenty of close calls with vehicles alongside me encroaching my lane and this definitely has helped me spot/react accordingly. https://www.amazon.com/Riderscan-Blind-Spot-Mirror/dp/B00MGXQL3E

u/ChrisPnCrunchy ยท 14 pointsr/cars

Not to sound snarky but just angle your side mirrors all the way out so that you can see whatโ€™s in your blind spot. Thatโ€™s exactly how you should be using them.

If for whatever reason that is just not an option then I would suggest investing in these little oval stick-on blind spot mirrors

The aftermarket BSM are hundreds of dollars and the little oval mirrors are $8
