You might wanna skip out on the Musgo at first. You don't really need it, and while it can help soften your beard and moisturize your face it is kinda a luxury. If you really want a pre-shave soap you can pick up a $2 bar of glycerine soap at CVS or Walmart that will work just as well. Something like THIS would work fine.

The Omega brush & Proraso are fine to start out with, but if you want to save a bit more money you could start out with a Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set. This will get you a decent soap, brush & bowl for $10 or less (Walmart sells these for $8). The VDH puck is also very easy to lather which makes starting out a bit easier. Once you use it up you can start ordering - samplers or switch to Proraso if you want.

The blade sampler pack & Merkur 180 looks good. Personally I have never gotten a good shave out of my Edwin Jagger DE89 which has the same head as the DE86, however the EJ DE8x series are pretty highly recommended here on WE. My Merkur razor on the other hand (1904) gives me very gentle shaves. I would actually recommend the Merkur Classic instead of the 180, just because you probably don't need a longer handle, and it is easier to pay attention to maintaining the proper shave angle with a shorter razor. But the choice is yours. :)

Alum can be useful, but personally I find Witch Hazel to be more soothing which is important when you are starting out. If you go with a Witch Hazel look for one with the lowest alcohol content you can find. I use a cheap dollar store brand (Swan) that is 86% Witch Hazel to 14% alcohol and it works really nice. Thayers Witch Hazel is well regarded but a bit more pricey.

As far as aftershave.. again this is personal preference. If you have an aftershave that you are currently using that you like I would recommend you keep that for a while. Personally I like Nivea for Men Post Shave Balm, as it is very soothing and lightly moisturizes my face (I use is all over my face).

In any case, good luck with DE shaving and keep in mind it is a skill that takes a little while to learn. Don't be discouraged if your first shave doesn't live up to the hype. :)

About your age here!

I have pretty difficult skin... it's sensitive and gets rashes in response to all sorts of things, I have PIH (every time I get a pimple, after it heals, a dark mark stays on my skin for weeks and weeks), it gets oily and dry, the works. I ended up on this subreddit seeking help, and though I'm still experimenting with some things, it's DEFINITELY getting better.

I usually shower twice a day just because gym time works out in the middle of my schedule. I do my face washing in the shower, and I have the generic Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle body wash. It's actually pretty good on your face. I also have the Cerave hydrating face wash, but I'm not sure lately if it adds anything. Maybe. For now the Tea Tree Tingle seems to be doing just fine.

Every few days I use the St. Ives Pads. I know a lot of people on here recommend the Stridex, but my hyper-sensitive skin had a conniption about those.

By day, my moisturizer is the Cerave in the tub and they are NOT KIDDING. Of all the products I've tried courtesy of this sub, this is the #1 most helpful thing I've discovered yet.

At night, in hopes of treating my PIH, I've been experimenting with Retinol. They say it takes a long time to notice any difference. They're right. I've noticed no difference. BUT thus far, my skin hasn't broken out, gotten blotchy or rashy, or otherwise freaked out over this stuff, so... I'll hang in there.

Oh, and Sunscreen. I use Neutrogena Sensitive Skin. I recommend starting with VERY LITTLE and working it in one section at a time. It's easy to go overboard and end up with caked-on white face.

PROTIP WITH SUNSCREEN: you guessed it: there have been cases of melanoma in my family and I freckle out a lot and have a high risk (I told you my skin was difficult). ALWAYS remember to put sunscreen all over your ears (front and back) and on the tops of your feet/toes. People don't think to cover these areas and don't check for melanoma there in time, usually.

Oh, and last: I've tried the Aztec Healing Clay twice now as I've needed to get rid of blackheads or calm things down a bit. Definitely use Apple Cider Vinegar, that stuff is the best.

ORDER OF OPERATIONS

  1. in shower, Tea Tree Tingle or Cerave hydrating face wash

  2. (only 2-3x/week) St. Ives Pads

  3. Moisturizer Cerave in the tub or Retinol

  4. By day: Neutrogena Sensitive Skin sunscreen

  5. Randomly on a Saturday afternoon if my skin's been having freak-outs, Aztec Healing Clay

I'm pretty new at this myself, but so far it's working out pretty well. I started with the Beginner's Skincare Routine as a rough guide and otherwise lurked around figuring things out (which is still pretty much how I'm handling it). So far, awesome sub, and found a lot of this has been really helpful!

I use Alba Botanica Very Emollient body wash. $10 on Amazon, $15 at Target. The bottle is huge and should last me gosh... probably 3 months even though my two kids also use it daily. I use a salux cloth with two pumps of body wash.

For my face I use Yes to Carrots Fragrance Free Daily Cream Facial Cleanser. Super expensive on Amazon. $8 at Target. It does not foam up or lather and it is super thick but it rinses clean with no burning or tightness after. You truly only need an actual pea sized amount for your whole face, so this bottle should last at least 3 months!

For my hair, right now I am using Burts Bees Very Volumizing Pomegranate shampoo and conditioner. These are honestly a bit expensive considering how little you get, so because I have long hair, even though these are amazing (super shiny hair now!) I am going to try Alba's shampoo/conditioner when these run out. Sulfate free is important to me.

After I wash my face I use Stridex in the red box (Whoa, that's a good deal on Amazon for a 3 pack... otherwise, around $5 at King Soopers) and after I'm done drying my hair, putting on lotion (Jergens Ultra Healing) I use Shiseido Senka Aging Care UV Sunscreen, which is absolutely amazing. I don't use a moisturizer anymore because the face wash and this sunscreen somehow are more than enough. The sunscreen doesn't have a scent, goes on easily, sinks in right away, has a matte finish... and my skin looked younger and smoother and healthier after one day using it!

The biggest reason I think I am bouncing back like this is because Nature Throid has T3 and T4 and I've been on that since 2 weeks after my initial diagnosis. My hair growth is probably about 4 months worth, so I would bet that in a couple months you will start to notice things improving. In the meantime, drink tons of water ( a gallon a day is actually ok), moisturize, and breathe deeply. :)

My routine is just brush my teeth, wash my face, take my meds, and plan my day. Which is super simple, but was really hard for me to do for a long time. And then I started making each step easier. I had to figure out how to set myself up for success. Which meant shaping things in my life to work for who I actually am, rather than some "perfect ideal" that I had in my head.

For bacne:

  1. Change to a salicylic body wash. I recommend Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash.

  2. Use a salicylic acid exfoliant on the back, once or twice daily. I recommend Stridex Med Pads.

  3. Finish with a salicylic moisturizer. I recommend CeraVe Renewing SA Lotion.

You’ll notice the trend here: salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid penetrates the skin, causes a softening and sloughing of the top layer of skin, and helps unclog pores to resolve and prevent acne. This acid is also lipophillic, which means it can even penetrate oily skin and already clogged pores, resulting in a deep cleaning. Salicylic acid can reduce sebum secretion, which is another way it can help reduce acne. Lastly, it's also an anti-inflammatory, which can help calm inflamed acne and promote healing.

As a final note, unrelated to the bacne.. please stop using R+F products. The products are of average quality at best, way over-priced, and even more overrated. Not least of all that MLM schemes should be avoided. If you need help with your skin care, the community info in this subreddit has a really excellent FAQ and wiki, and members are more than happy to answer questions.

    Best of luck.

YMMV on this, but raw African black soap (the tan block kind, not the dark gritty kind; should look kind of like this) is really conditioning because of all the plant butters, but also healed up a cyst of mine in the span of about 30 hours. Not sure how effective it is for everyone, but I love it. My skin is (touch wood) much, much clearer after I started using it.

Neutrogena makes a 2.5% BP cream, and that's pretty much the only one I've been able to find in a drugstore (everything else I've seen is 5% or 10%, which is drying and terrible). It works for me!

CeraVe in the tub is an awesome, light yet effective moisturizer. I predict that's what everyone will recommend here.

And I'd REALLY recommend going easy on the makeup. It's usually not a substance that's particularly good for your skin. That's why I don't wear foundation-- it's a short-term fix that leads to more long-term issues. Plus, it doesn't fool anyone (especially not girls-- we all know what spackle face looks like). At most, you should put concealer on particularly bad or red spots (I use Maybelline Fit Me Concealer, which is effective, but light and breathable, and hasn't ever made a spot worse).

Sulfur wash recommendations?

My dermatologist initially prescribed a sulfur wash for some stubborn acne that I've been experiencing over the last few months, but it wasn't covered by insurance and cost almost $500. So she said to look for one on Amazon. I ended purchasing this one: 10% Sulfur Soap All Natural Fresh Scent. Fragrance Free. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00AZD8L1W/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_HWQZDbQMFBQ2P

I've (F26) been using it on and off for about two weeks now but I'm noticing very small pustules in odd places like the top of my cheeks and on my nose, which I usually don't experience. My question is two parts: does anyone have any positive experiences using sulfur wash for acne, and, if so, do you have any product recommendations?

My routine below is as follows:

Skin type: combo, acne prone

Location: northeast United States

AM Routine:

  1. Rinse with warm water
  2. Paula's Choice Vitamin C Serum
  3. CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion
  4. CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Face Lotion with Sunscreen - SPF 30 (I've suspected for awhile that this product is making my skin more oily than normal so I tried my routine today without it and sure enough my skin is less oily)

    PM Routine:
  5. Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser
  6. Prescription tretinoin 0.05%
  7. Cetaphil moisturizing eye cream
  8. CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion

I also have been using Paula's Choice Azelaic Acid cream for some PIE and PIH from acne and silicone scar sheets for some bad PIE left from a boil I got on my cheek a month ago (I forgot to clean off my blue light glasses at work before wearing them which caused the infection)

And FINALLY, I was put on 5mg of Lexapro starting in mid July. About six weeks after that was when the breakouts started and got so out of control. I stopped taking it after three months while my dermatologist simultaneously put me on minocycline for two weeks. The acne improved during that time. Since then it has gotten better but it's starting to flair up again and I'm getting really frustrated with constantly trying to fight my acne and not seeing my skin go back to what it was. I get jawline acne that coordinates with my cycle but these latest breakouts are occuring at more random times in my cycle.

Do I just need to be more patient in letting my skin and hormones regulate? Is the sulfur wash worth it? I know I came here just to ask about to sulfur wash but if you think that it's another problem entirely I'm all ears. Anything to heal my skin and bring some of my confidence back. I feel like I'm doing my skin such an injustice with it in this condition and just want to help it go back to being acne free.

It's hard not to be a slob. Trust me, if I didn't have things in my life that required me to get up and get going, I would be exactly like you.

I keep a pretty simple routine that works for me, so here's a rundown of a few of my habits on cleanliness.

Some people shower in the mornings, others at night. I on the other hand shower any time I feel grimy. This means I shower any time I feel I need one, even if that means showering two or three times in a day. I put the water on slightly warmer than lukewarm, because hot water dries out your skin. I lather up my anti-dandruff shampoo first and leave it in my hair while I wash my body. I use Clear Men Scalp Therapy, because after using just about every other product on the market I've found it to be the only thing that works for me. Everyone is different, so experiment with different brands to see what suits you. But remember, you have to leave anti-dandruff shampoo in your hair for about five minutes to get any benefit from it.

I then wash my body with a loofa and bar soap. Men + Care is nice and moisturizing. Unscented soap is good if you plan on wearing cologne. I pay special attention to the sweatiest parts of my body (groin, pits, feet, etc). I lather up the soap and let it sit on those spots for a minute or two.

I then wash the shampoo out of my hair and apply conditioner. I don't have a preference on conditioner, I just use whatever my girlfriend has in the shower. It takes a few minutes for conditioner to do its magic, so I leave it in my hair while I wash my face. Here I pay special attention to my ears and nose.

I rinse off, wrap a towel around my waist and drape another over my back and shoulders while I get ready to brush my teeth, shave my face, and do my hair. To learn great techniques for shaving, check out /r/wicked_edge. I keep my hair pretty short, so doing my hair is pretty quick and painless. I get a haircut once every two weeks, and I use American Crew Fiber to style it. That stuff is amazing once you figure out how to use it. It takes a little practice. There are Youtube videos you could look up to find a great technique for your hair. Also, /r/malehairadvice of course.

By this time my body is dry (I don't rub the towels on myself to dry, I just dry off naturally because my skin is sensitive), so I take a little gold bond and spray it on my feet and my inner thighs. Gold Bond No Mess Spray Powder will change your life.

A spray of cologne (I use Abercrombie's Fierce...it's cliche I know, but it turns my girlfriend on) on my wrists and the back of my neck and I'm ready to get dressed.

Visit /r/malefashionadvice if you want to learn more than you ever wanted to know about clothes.

Hope some of this helps!

u/rexxxie · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I have been using a combination of this spray and this body wash and my skin seems to be cleared nicely. I was never super blemishy but there was definitely some ick going on back there. The spray is a little pricey, and depending on the size of the area, you may go through it quickly; I honestly feel like this spray does most of the work so if you were only going to pick one I'd go with the spray. The body wash is has an added bonus of smelling nice and mildly moisturizing the skin which is quite pleasant.

Shampoo/Conditioner:

I use a custom designed Shampoo called Function of Beauty. Basically, it allows you to custom design the goals of the hair care (for example, I want length, volume, shine, hydration, etc) and then they custom make it for you. It even has your name printed on the bottle. I just started using it a couple weeks ago, but I am really liking it thus far. Referral link is here if you are interested (It will give you a cheaper price and give me a $5 referral credit)
https://functionofbeauty.com/?ref=598f7ad04e62b

Bodywash:

Fairly basic - Neutrogena Body Wash

Face care:

I picked up this routine from my wife, and have been going with it. I may try to switch to slightly cheaper products, but I do love how well these work/smell:

Suki Daily cleanser

Suki Balancing Day Lotion (I think that is the right link, I will have to double check)

Suki Eye lift renwal cream - Day (Had problems finding an amazon link)

u/iBeenie · 1 pointr/Dreadlocks

You don't need a special "dreadlock" shampoo. I've never bought a single dreadlock-oriented product and I just hit the two year mark a month ago.

Look for "residue-free" shampoos. I mostly use Dr. Bronner's (I dilute 2-4 drops in a water bottle before I apply it). Neutrogena makes a residue-free shampoo, but it smells like Egyptian perfume so it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I also really like african black soap but it isn't technically residue free. It makes my hair feel amazing though so I use it every week or two. It also comes in a bar form like Dr. Bronners but I feel like the bars are difficult to manage how much soap you're using and I will always end up using way more than I need to.

I also did the twist and rip method and my locs are now a few inches past my shoulders. I wash with shampoo every other wash. The washes in between I use just straight water to scrub my scalp and rinse my dreads really well. I try to be very cautious of what I put in my locs and I pay most attention to rinsing well and drying completely.

Ninja edit: Forgot to add, I have been using argan oil to help hydrate my hair after washes. I usually spray some in while I'm drying my hair. There are a few different brands and mixes you can get, but this is the one I have been using. I looked for the one that didn't mention anything about detangling when I bought it (some of the others mentioned they help detangle, so I just avoided those but I'm not really sure how good/bad they are for dreads).

u/giomanach7 · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I've struggled with back/shoulder acne too basically for the past 15 years, and the combination that has worked best for me is the Neutrogena acne body wash with salicylic acid (used every day on problem areas at the very end of a shower), and then applying the glycolic acid toner from the Ordinary with my hands after my skin is dry and letting that dry down fully before getting dressed.

The toner was too harsh for my face but worked wonders on my back! I've only been using it for a little over a month but I have pretty much no active acne left and it looks like it is even starting to fade some of the PIH. It is drying, so I do sometimes use just whatever body lotion I have on hand at least half an hour after applying the toner. But I don't even do that every day, just when it feels a little dry. I'm a bit hesitant to recommend a product from TO right now because of whatever is going on with the company, but it has been more effective than anything else I've tried and is very affordable so I think it's worth a try!

u/kellybuMUA · 1 pointr/MakeupAddiction

I used to use only the BB solid cleanser that came with the blender, but that got expensive real quick. I follow Stephanie Nicole's channel and loved her luxury brush cleansing tutorial. She recommended a brick of African soap infused with shea butter. I tried it on my blender out of curiosity and it worked incredibly well, with identical results as the solid cleanser! The difference is that for about $8 you'll get easily 6x the product. The brick is huge and will last for a long time.

u/Swablus · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

As someone who has been using Dove soap for many years, I honestly have not spotted a difference. However, personally I've moved locations and so I know for sure that I'm sensitive to the water (hard water) as I started to develop rashes on my skin after a lukewarm shower. If Dove doesn't work for you anymore, I recommend you trying out Cetaphil (Gentle) and/or CeraVe bar soap as they're equally great for sensitive skin. I've tried CeraVe soap and I love it :-)

u/BludMuffin · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I'm a huge fan of Nubian Heritage African Black Soap. It's very hydrating and seems to cleanse deeper than other products I've used. It also has anti-acne properties, which I'm like you - I only break out every once in a while. You can use it all over your body or just on your face. I bought a bar about 10 months ago and it's still going strong. I keep it in the shower.

It's super cheap on Amazon (less than $5) and is probably the best thing in existence.

u/LeagueImaginaryWomen · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I get acne on my chest, neck, and back during the summer and I also have KP all over my arms, legs, and butt. I like to dry brush once a week, use a moisturizing body wash (this or this), and use an acne body wash occasionally too. I haven't found the perfect combo to help with my KP, the most effective way to soothe it is a little sun unfortunately. Right now I use AmLactin, Stridex, and a body butter. I think I may try a daily AHA too, although I've tried the 35% glycolic acid skin peel on my arms with not great results.

As far as hair removal goes, I use a hard wax at home on my legs. It's more time consuming but the results are worth it! If I shave, I typically use my partner's manly safety razor. I also fake tan during the summer, I like St. Tropez dark bronzing mousse and/or Jergens natural glow moisturizer in medium/tan. I have light skin, and the darker tanning products work just fine on me. Highly recommend the tanning exfoliating mitts, I'll use these instead of a salt/sugar body scrub.

Hi all, newbie here, so please let me know if this is not the place for this question.

I believe I have sensitive skin. I used to get large pimples around my eyebrows, and on my cheeks and chin. My skin got dramatically better one day after I used Shea Moisture's Eczema/Psoiriasis soap at a friend's place, and I've been using either that or the troubled skin variant and have seen good results.

If I change my soap for even a day, my skin breaks out all over. Most recently this happened when I used my partner's soap.

I use the Shea Moisture Problem Skin moisturizer, which is great. I tried to switch to Aveeno at one point, and my skin turned red and rashy.

I use lipstick/highlighters as makeup, but almost never use concealer/foundation. Sometimes I'll put 100% tea tree oil directly on my skin, albeit in small quantities, and this dries out any small bumps on my skin.

What I'm looking for is for someone to "diagnose" my skin, and suggest any products that might work better than what I currently use, if possible. Please let me know if there's any more information I should provide, and thank you in advance for your advice!

u/Sequence_Scroll_1921 · 2 pointsr/DeathByMillennial

As for the one I use, you can find it on Amazon if you search "Olive Oil Nablus Soap." Has blue Arabic writing and a red camel logo. One bar usually lasts me a month. Also, here's a video from 2014 documenting their process from start to finish. I believe the AP Archive has a similar but older video of the same sort of thing. Though I'm not sure if it's the same family business as previous video.

Either way it's a great way to support business in the West Bank for a great product. This kind of olive oil soap is commonly made and used all over the Mediterranean from France to Syria and has basically been made the same way for 500 years. It's as simple as soap gets and is often used for lots of different purposes. Body, dishes, clothes, etc...

u/Huckleberryking · 3 pointsr/Wetshaving

Like Greggy said. Stirling and MLS are great. My wife hijacked my Drunken Goat soap. Wholly Kaw just sent me a bar of his bath soap that I used this morning and it's just as good. Not sure of he sells them on his site though. I assume if you ask he can hook you up. I have a lot of Indian grocery stores around me and they have an amazing amount of bar soaps. One was supposedly Mysore Sandalwood and it did smell nice. Tallow Soap that has lanolin in it and it's only a couple bucks a bar. This is the stuff (Mysore Sandal Soap 2.65 oz Box, (Pack of 12) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001G7PZB0/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_nUpFxbKWKZ5NA)

You could try adding Shea Moisture African Black Soap! I have started washing my face and body with this stuff and I’ve really seen a difference in my skin! I’ve attached an Amazon link, but you can get it at Walmart for a better price! It smells strongly of black licorice in case you’re sensitive to smells! There are many other African Black Soaps you can research as well, this brand is just my favorite!

I had no idea body wash might be a part of it. I currently use this fragrance-free body wash/ with a sponge loofa everyday, but I honestly can't tell if my hands are getting any softer. Are people with soft hands generally self-aware? I mean, I've only met one guy with super soft hands before and whenever I shake hands with someone who has super soft hands (very rare even for women), I complement them on it.

I will ask my mom to get me some of those salux cloths I guess.

u/ruger9shooter · 2 pointsr/shaving

What is your routine and gear? I would suggest by mapping the grain of your beard first. If you are using a safety razor make sure you aren't using any pressure. Do a with the grain pass followed by a relather and across the grain.

For a preshave I would suggest a shower and wash your face with a pure glycerin soap like Clearly Natural(can be found a whole foods and sometimes walmart).

Post shave depends on your budget.

Chatillion Lux makes fantastic toners (no alcohol), aftershave (contain alcohol), and post shave salves (more like a cream). What I would recommend from them depends on your skin type.

The cheapest way to go is store brand witch hazel. You can pick it up at almost any box store or pharmacy for $1-$3. It does tend to have an unpleasant smell that disipates quickly. It also contains alcohol. Thayer's alcohol free unscented is a lot more pleasing but comes with a higher price tag.

The mid level option is Nivea Post shave balm. It can also be picked up at any box store or pharmacy. It's very nice for the price.

u/ArtsyFartsyAlcoholic · 2 pointsr/migraine

It worked for me too. This morning I had to wake up extra early but had a migraine just starting so I hopped in the shower and used my peppermint scented conditioner from Trader Joe's, after a few minutes I felt fine. If you have TJ near you I highly recommend getting this shampoo and conditioner set (I think they're less than $5/each). Not only are they nice for your hair and scalp they're also great for when you feel a migraine coming on.

Edit: The name is Tea Tree Tingle, it has peppermint and eucalyptus in it. I might be wrong about the price because in Amazon they're nearly $12 per bottle. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002LMBLTY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2UQUzb878K4SS

Edit 2: There's also a body wash version! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002LMCFFS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rUQUzbM6GFRF0

As you can read in all the comments. Sweat patterns can change but they don't change in a particular direction. Some become more sweaty some less. Others the situation where you sweat changes. Overall the changes in sweat patterns are less dependent on hormones then they are other factors. Some people when they start HRT they also start a fitness program to get gender specific weight off end up changing there sweat patterns also. Fitness is by far the most profound way to change your sweat patterns. Before fitness I used to sweat a lot and I was dependent on AC after fitness I became more intolerant of AC, if it was hot and the humidly low I didn't want to be any ware near AC.

Smell on the other hand is very much influenced by diet and hormones. Sweat does not smell, yes it does have a natural scent but it does not smell. Bacteria that live on our skin and in our pores convert the largely odorless sweat into Body Odor. Hormones do have a major influence on the fragrance these bacteria produce. Which is the reason MtF's report there smell becomes sweeter and FtM's say there smells become mustier. Now there are things you can do to change your smell quickly if it bothers you. 1. you start with a healthy diet. 2. get rid of all your soaps, body washes, shower gels etc. 3. for at least 4 weeks and as long as you like use a black soap such as black soap or soap2. Regular soap trys to kill all the bacteria on your so your body is just recolonized quickly by foul smelling bacteria making you have wash again repeating a cycle. Black soap kills the foul bacteria and leave your skin safe for the better smelling bacteria to take hold.

If you do find a chapstick or balm that works for you, try putting it on right before you go to sleep. You're less likely to lick it off while sleeping and it will help a ton with your lips drying out overnight (when I do this consistently my lips are almost never chapped and I don't need to reapply during the day or anything).

I've never really believed the "chapstick will make your lips need chapstick" idea, but that's just anecdotal. I definitely don't think your lips would get "addicted" or anything if you only put it on once a day.

Related advice: if your heels or hands dry out in the winter, climb on balm is the best thing ever. It's like magic for curing those nasty heel cracks, and it's made from food-grade natural ingredients. I've never tried it on my lips, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

Edit: They make climb on chapstick. Basically beeswax + plant oils.

So, my son (in the picture) has had eczema over most of his body, including his scalp, and we've always used a moisturizer called Cera Ve with good results. If your dry skin is related to eczema, my understanding is that it could be allergy related.

My son and I have been using "African black soap" for the last year or so, including our scalps. It seems to clean more gently and keeps skin moisturized. The kind I linked is probably the most popular, and we get it at Walgreens.

Best smelling all in one shower wash: 18.21 Man Made. I only use it as a body wash; wife loves it, dogs approve, makes me less of a caveman on the regular. Can't explain just how nice this stuff is.

I can tell you what products I use for mine. I've tried a lot of products. The stuff I like is

Beard Guyz Beard Serum with Grotein 20, 1 ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y4DB3B6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Id6XCb47J3NRR

Cremo Styling Beard Cream,Thickening, 4 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MYF6JHY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Te6XCbBQNZJ84

Shea Moisture African Black Soap With Shea Butter 8 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005C2N8IC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_xn6XCbJRR90Z6

They've both been the best at making my beard look fuller and styling it. I think the beard serum worked best when it was shorter and the cremo works better with my longer beard now. Mine's pretty long so if I don't use product I look bad lol.

Beard shampoo isn't at all necessary and most of them include oils that block dht so they won't help grow your beard either. Waste of money. I just use african black soap. It's good for my face and my beard. Also it doesn't contain any parabens or propylene glycol.

All that being said. You can always pick up a basic beard balm and use the same soap you wash with. Just don't get anything with dht blocking oils such as lavender oil, rosemary oil, tea tree oil, pumpkin seed oil, saw palmetto oil, and emu oil.

I have been using african black soap for years, but i like the ones you buy in a big block a lot better than the shea moisture bars. I think many people find it to be quite drying, but it keeps my skin more clear and balanced than anything else I've ever used.

I feel like an "outlier" here in that I don't really have an HG anything. I have products that I like in all categories, but I feel like there are tons of options that work for me.

As for the body wash thing, you might consider one of the Aveeno fragrance free body washes. I use this one in the winter when my skin is really dry and itchy and it always works well for me.

u/duh-palmtree · 15 pointsr/SCAcirclejerk

So I did a lot of research on it before I bought it and apparently anything you can buy off the shelf at a store is either fake or altered, which means it’s not “real,” in a sense. Real African black soap will look sort of like someone threw it up and have an earthy, grainy texture to it. There’s no lye used when they make it (if someone who understands soap more than me can step in here I’d be grateful) which makes the whole bar less consistent.

Ideally you want to choose one that says that it was made in Ghana because then you know you’re getting the real thing and not a bar of soap that was dyed black for laughs.

Anywhoo, onto my experiences...the internet told me that it’s too harsh to apply directly to the skin, so after I take my makeup off, I wet my face down and rub the soap with my fingers until a brown, oily substance coats them, from there I can massage it into my face for a few seconds. I was surprised the first time I used it because I wasn’t expecting it to foam up and it kind of does. Once I’ve got it rubbed all over everything (not my eye area), I let it sit for like 5 seconds and then I splash water onto my face to get it off.

Before I had any kind of skincare routine I had a lot of built up dead skin on my face. I’d guess that I probably had dehydrated skin because no matter how much I moisturized it was still gunky. We’re talking blackheads everywhere and I could scrape the skin off in the shower. Now that I have a better routine (going on a year now) my skin is more clear and definitely a normal skin type, I absolutely think the soap being so strong has a lot to do with that.

If you’ve never used it before I’d say start with once or twice a week and see what happens. I find that my skin feels “squeaky clean” after I wash my face but not horribly dry...I definitely need to re-add hydrators and moisturizers after I use the soap but my face doesn’t feel nearly as tight as, say, if I’ve gotten out of the shower after just using straight water without any cleanser.

If you do decide to go for it see if you can find a bar that’s not a 1lb brick though, I thought a pound was a good choice and no joke, using it just on my face, 7 days a week, I have a decade’s supply. My boyfriend’s young daughters will be getting African black soap gifted to them on their 21st birthdays. I don’t know what to do with this amount of soap.

But that’s enough of this rant. I hope I answered some questions!

u/dylvital · 10 pointsr/climbing

I only started at the beginning of the year so i know exactly what you're going through. If you go about once a week for a few weeks you'll slowly have more and more endurance. So instead of being wiped out after 25 minutes, you'll soon be able to go 2 or 3 hours.

The biggest thing you need to know is that if you really keep at it and start going 2 or 3 times a week, you need to stretch well, both arms and legs before you climb, every time, no matter what. And then when you feel loose, go climb some super easy stuff for about 7-10 minutes. Otherwise you'll pull a tendon in your arm(s) and not be able to climb for weeks.

There are stages that you'll go through:

  1. Sore forearms and fingers

Do push ups on days you don't climb to help build up your muscles a bit more. The forearm and finger soreness gets better fairly quickly (at least for me) as long as you're consistently climbing. I think i stopped having ridiculously sore forearms after about 2-3 weeks.

  2. Blisters

Most likely the skin on your fingers isn't used to the feeling of basically rubbing sandpaper on it for hours at a time, so even though your forearms may be feeling better, all that climbing has now caught up to your soft fingers and fingertips and you'll probably get some nasty blisters on your fingers (pinky specifically). For that, i recommend getting climbing tape, and just taping over the cuts and sores until the heal and turn to callus.

  3. Skin is constantly torn up

Once you've been climbing for about 1.5-2 months consistently, your hands will start to feel a bit rougher and you'll be able to get some of those crimps and slopers you couldn't before. But that doesn't mean you still aren't irritating your skin and turning it red raw. When you go to grab a hold and it just feels like fire, that's when you know it's probably time to stop for the day. I got to point where I had to stop for about 5 days (it felt like a lifetime) because my hands just weren't healing fast enough.

Buy this it's climb on! an amazing lotion bar that heals your hands SO fast. i use it daily and on days that i climb, i use it right when i get home and that burning sensation is just gone and my hands feel rejuvenated. It's literally saved my ability to continue climbing. It's not greasy, it smells good and it's even edible (not that you'd WANT to eat it). couldn't recommend it more, i'm actually addicted to it i think.

Hope this helps man! And sorry for making this so long, i just feel obligated since i just went through the exact process you're about to go through.

As for full body workout, you'll definitely feel fairly sore almost everywhere after a solid day of climbing, but its definitely like 60/40 upper body to lower body.

tl;dr: you'll get sore, it'll pass. use tape on wounds, and heal them with climb on.

Thanks for the response.

I got curious about glycerin soap as pre-shave, so I bought this one from Sprouts a couple days ago. I use Williams Mug Shaving soap, and using that glycerine soap as a pre-shave made a fairly noticeable positive difference in the lather.

u/cardinal29 · 1 pointr/keto

Got some results with Sulfur SAL3 soap.

There's a whole micro-world of bacteria, yeast and parasites living on us all, and sometimes changes in diet and certainly sweating can increase the population of those creatures.

Also, it helps to get REALLY dry, like use the blow dryer on all your creases before you get dressed. Even "towel-dry" is not enough.

u/arbarnes · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Also, you didn't ask, but if you're interested in sandalwood bath soap, check out Mysore Sandal Soap. It's made at the Government Soap Factory in Bangalore by Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Ltd. The government of Karnataka also owns most of the sandalwood plantations in the former kingdom of Mysore. That vertical integration gets you nice-smelling soap made with real sandalwood oil for a very attractive price. Now they just need to make shave soap.

[Male] I've got fairly severe body acne and a mild case of rosacea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosacea) (damn you Dutch genes....) Haven't ever gone to the doctor for it, but it's been... difficult. I have a hard time viewing myself as attractive as a result. Have an amazing girlfriend who still finds me attractive in spite of it all.

That is to say: The right person will still thing you're beautiful. Someone who is repulsed by it probably isn't worth your time.

Something I've done in recent weeks that has severely reduced the amount of body acne...

This: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000535RD/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00

Used with this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I20Q72/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i01

I tried this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y038CS/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00
But it wasn't NEARLY as effective as the Neutrogena for my specific skin.

It hasn't made things go away completely, but it's reduced them enough that I was able to go to a water park last week with my girlfriend and her family and had enough courage to not wear a shirt all day long.

I've also found that spending a few days in the sun and letting my skin soak in the rays will certainly alleviate the appearance as well and hide some of the scarring. The body acne started when I was about 15 (now 25) so it's not an insignificant amount. Face is 99.9% clear all the time - just back, shoulders, etc.

Eventually, I'll go in to a dermatologist for it, but in the meantime... limiting chocolate intake (sad day...) and the linked products have drastically reduced it to the point where it's now mostly sub-surface and leftover scarring.

I'm glad you're still alive. Suicide is always tragic. Stiff upper lip, chin up, all that jazz.

Yup, I find that if I sleep with moisturizer my skin is just greasy in the morning, I don't know why it's like that, it just works better for me.

I don't like any brand name black soap, they have too many extra ingredients that seems to make my skin worse. I use authentic raw African Black soap, if you have any local organic grocers they should have it, if not, you can find it on amazon or eBay. It will be packaged either in plastic wrap or a container and will state which country it came from. I'll include a link from a search I did give it a try .

I hope this helps you like it helped me. It's taken me years to find something that worked.

u/calenlass · 2 pointsr/ABraThatFits

I have fairly sensitive skin and wear sports bras a lot for work, where sweating often leaves me breaking out along the band. I've had decent success with african black bar soap from Shea Moisture or Nubian Heritage, the latter of which I can find at my local grocery store. I don't know if these would be preventative enough to help your issue, though.

u/LilyeaneBlack · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

you can also melt it into water and put it in a soap dispenser - this is what i did as it melts super quickly if left in the shower.

My daughter has extremely sensitive skin and all detergent based (SLS and the like) soaps irritate her skin. Here is what we found the most success with (after trying many!) They were not irritating: Dead Sea Salt Soap, African Black Soap, These are simple traditional soaps. They lack all of the extra ingredients and harsh detergents that are in usual drugstore brand soaps and body washes. She uses a single ingredient oil afterwards like sunflower oil or jojoba oil. Good luck!

u/acleverpseudonym · 3 pointsr/fragrance

If you like bar soap, I'm personally a fan of the Mysore Sandal soap that you can find in Indian grocery stores and on Amazon. It's dirt cheap (a dollar or two per bar) and smells great.

u/outofhell · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

This optiMSM powder is almost the same price per gram ($18.8 vs $17.4 per gram MSM).
Actually I just got my first sulphur soap today. It isn't even a soap, but a soapfree pH 6 sulphur bar cleanser. So I suppose that one should be okay, but I will see (it's name is "Schwefel-Seife Waschstück" from "Blücher-Schering", a German brand).
This (also here) sulfur soap seems to be popular too. It claims to have a pH of 6 and has also 3% salicylic acid. A pH of 6 is too high though for the salicylic acid (SA) to work properly as an exfoliant, so I wouldn't rely on the SA in there.

u/margheritapizzasonly · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

Whiteheads happen when there is dirt that is clogging the pore, so I think that it might be able to be resolved by:

  1. Using a different soap. Bar soap can be very drying sometimes and your skin might be sensitive to the fragrance. If you like bar soap, try using African Black Soap which is good for clearing acne:
    https://www.amazon.com/Shea-Moisture-African-Black-Butter/dp/B005C2N8IC

Or this body wash that has AHA, which is an exfoliant and is geared towards body acne:
    https://www.amazon.com/Mario-Badescu-Botanical-Body-Soap/dp/B002CBZB5E

  2. Although I know you said you want to shower every other day, you could always test out showering every day and see if that alone makes a difference. Sometimes fixing the problem has to do with other factors like are you taking a shower right after you work out so sweat doesn’t clog your pores, or even how often you change your bed sheets.

It might also help to shower in warm water to open your pores and then before you get out, turn the water temperature to cold so it closes your pores. This could potentially fix the dry skin problem if you usually shower in hot water, which is drying.

Added: Also make sure you’re washing all the soap off your back. If you think you’ve rinsed it all off, rinse again. Sometimes it’s just that there’s soap residue left (which also happens with a lot of bar soaps).

Your claim that they do not market this as "handmade artisanal" is false, as is your claim that it is only being made for the community.

Pretty sure the folks over in Palestine aren't paying $15 a bar either.

Safety Razor

Blades

Deodorant - Herban Cowboy Dusk Scent.

Body Wash - tea tree oil from Trader Joe's (buy it there and not on Amazon due to price).

Probably not, the amazon page claims it to have "almost no scent".

Excuse the horrible formatting im on mobile but as an eczema/body acne veteran, this has helped me TONS:

Shea Moisture African Black Soap With Shea Butter 8 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005C2N8IC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qfydBbR7QP24M

I think it's Nablus soap from the West Bank.

I recall seeing this a few months or years ago. I'd imagine they get a spike in sales whenever this pops up on reddit. But they probably have no idea why.

Edit: a letter and an apostrophe

Last time this was posted I found out it's in Palestine and they are about $4/bar, or $15 from Amazon. This is something similar - https://www.amazon.com/Olive-Oil-Nablus-Soap-count/dp/B00537QFK4

It's called Nablusi, or Nablus soap, made with Olive Oil.....which sounds awful to shower with.

this happened to me when i was young. it was devastating. people feel like they can comment on your skin and its like you cant get away. i will say one thing- im older now and FINALLY the solution to fixing my skin was a 6 dollar bar of sulfur soap. I was using expensive Rodan and Fields and they changed their face wash which i learned was essentially just sulfur soap and so I started buying this bar and I haven't had a single pimple in like 4 years. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AZD8L1W/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I am so sorry you were mad to feel bad. It stings forever.

I've got OCD, and while my picking isn't as compulsive as some people's, it's a bitch. I've also got KP on my arms and thighs, and get incredibly ingrown hairs from shaving (and even when not shaving, but far fewer).

What I do. Scrubby nylon cloth with Aveeno unscented moisturizing body wash. Scrub scrub scrub, especially my upper arms and legs where the KP is.

After the shower, pat dry and apply Gold Bond Rough and Bumpy, which literally took me an entire tub to learn how to apply: hint, it's very thick, and doesn't spread easily, but use less than you think, because otherwise it just pills up and flakes off and is sticky and gross. But use just a little every day and it's magical.

Bonus avoiding picking: wear clothes that make it hard to pick; long tight pants, long sleeve shirts, socks, whatever. I compulsively pick at my toenails, and it's the grossest thing ever, so I wear socks 95% of the time so I can't physically pick at my feet.

Optional- I've stopped shaving, because the ingrown hairs just weren't worth it at all, but using an old fashioned safety razor and a new blade every shave (and only shaving once a week) really helped reduce the ingrowns. I used one side of the blade per leg. But like I said, I still got ingrown hair no matter what I did, so I've got body hair now and very few ingrown hairs comparatively. YMMV

I have combination skin that alternates between being too oily and too dry. I have LOTS of large pores and sebaceous filaments around my nose and chin, and they never seem to go away, even with occasional blackhead strips or weekly exfoliation. I sometimes get acne in these spots as well as my forehead--occasionally small bumps, but usually cystic acne. I recently switched from the birth control pill (combination pill) to an IUD, so I've noticed an increase of acne on my face and body (where I've never really gotten acne before, even before I went on the pill).

I've also always had issues with redness and unevenness, especially around my cheeks and nose. It flares up when I'm stressed or when I eat gluten (celiac disease), and it seems really similar to my mother's rosacea. My skin is very sensitive as well, and harsh products irritate my skin and make it inflamed, red, and itchy.

Here's my current routine:

MORNING (shower)

Shea Moisture African Black Soap bar

SheaMoisture African Black Soap Body Wash (body)

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Problem Skin Toner OR 100% witch hazel (alcohol free)

Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer For Sensitive Skin With Broad Spectrum Spf 15

NIGHT

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water, For All Skin Types

Shea Moisture African Black Soap bar

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Problem Skin Toner

LadyKin Affinitic Snail Cream

Skyn Iceland Pure Cloud Cream OR Shea Moisture Peace Rose Oil Complex Sensitive Skin Moisturizer

When I get cystic acne, I usually use either diluted tea tree oil or a tiny bit of benzoyl peroxide directly on the bumps. The latter tends to irritate my skin very badly.

Regarding facial cleansers, I sometimes alternate between the following as well:

Skyn Iceland Glacial Face Wash

BRTC Jasmine Waterfall Foaming Cleanser

And I wear mud/charcoal masks or sheet masks about once a week or so. Would anybody be able to provide guidance? I guess my primary concern is the redness, which is usually pretty noticeable. The other issues (acne and large pores) don't look as bad in person. Does anyone have any product/routine suggestions?
