The 100% best solution is to have a propane burner along with a High Pressure Hose so that you can use normal propane tanks that you'd get for your grill. Then keep maybe 3 of those full and ready to go and that will maintain your ability to use your stocks for a good while. (Note: I didn't dig too deep into direct compatibility of those two items. I just listed them as an example so you could see what I was talking about.)

Barring that... it's a question of shelf life vs cost. Obviously MRE's would be one of the better options, but they're pricey and it's best to store them in cool environments which may not be doable for everyone. Mainstay 2400 Bars are available at Walmart for $5 apiece and are fantastic for BOB's due to their hardiness, but surviving on those for any length of time would probably be miserable.

Dropping into normal foods... yeah, a well stocked and rotated pantry is the way to go.

  • Peanut Butter is high calorie, flavorful, and a thing most people can use regularly anyway. If you have forewarning you can try to snag extra bread from the grocery store. Barring that, YouTube how to make bread and get busy in the days leading out to the outage. I think whole wheats tend to last a bit longer, and I think things like wrapping the loaf in cling wrap then sealing it in Tupperware can help, but I'm not a baker so I can't say for sure.

  • Canned meats are a good call as the next in lineup. Tuna is obvious, but you can get canned chicken as well. Add some crackers into the mix and whatever seasoning you like (I'm a fiend for Lemon Pepper ) and those are meals on their own, though a bit pricey. Spam and tinned ham, while less pleasant uncooked, are also edible.

  • The good canned soups are fine right out of the can. Obviously they're less pleasant not being warmed, but that's actually something you can probably remedy to a degree just by having tea candles under them. There are also several camping stoves that do not require propane, and you can of course just have some sterno on hand too.

  • After that... well almost anything canned can work. Refried beans or Baked Beans cold out of the can are edible if not the most pleasant way to eat them. Good return on calories for those, and if you have a large family they are available in #10 Cans which will save you a lot on cost. Canned Veggies can be added in to other meals without heating, though the calorie returns on them make them inefficient. Canned/Jarred Fruit on the other hand can be a delicious morale lifter.

  • Bars of Velveeta keep for a surprising amount of time in the pantry, and there are about 2240 calories per full bar of them. That's another great option for throwing on crackers. Crack open a jar of salsa and add a bit to each cracker and that's tasty eating.

  • While it's not my favorite thing ever, Summer Sausage is around 1600 calories for a pounds of it and is shelf stable for a while when unopened I believe, though check the packaging to be safe. I believe Hickory Farms Cheese/Sausage lasts for months, though if you're not eating it regularly I don't know how feasible it is to have on hand consistently or in time for a disaster like this.

  • While the ideas could probably keep going, I'll end with trail mix. It's easily obtainable at a lot of locations, includes nuts, candy, and fruit so it's palatable, and tends to have a fairly high caloric return. Add in other snack foods like beef jerky, chips, and candy/energy/protein bars (also available at a lot of locations) and it should be fairly easy to find enough ways to get your daily calories in in the short term without needing to heat things up.

This is going to be fun. Across my multiple wishlists...

1.) Something that is grey.
Grey bedsheets.

2.) Something reminiscent of rain.
Pet water fountain.

3.) Something food related that is unusual.
Astronaut Ice Cream

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. (Yes, pets count!)
This Bruins banner is for my BFF Becky. She loves the Bruins more than anything. Hockey is her obsession. I put it on my list to remind myself to get it for her at some point. It would make her happy.

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it!
The Name of the Wind. Of everything I've read in the past 6 months, this one I devoured and have been desperate for the second book in (it's on my list to pick up this week, actually, if my paycheck EVER comes in).

Look, I hate... HATE... first person perspective. I see it as a sign of sloppy writing. However, this book had me SOLD on it. Kvothe is possibly one of my new favorite characters OF ALL TIME.

Avid reader doesn't even begin to describe me. I have my own library. I need books like air. And if I had to make a list of 100 books that were all I was allowed to have for the rest of my life, THIS WOULD BE ON IT.

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related!
This kindle book

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...)
The most interesting cat toy in the world

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it.
This choker. Enough said.

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why?
The Breakfast Club Why? Because. It's a good movie. Whether you were the jock, the brain, the spoiled brat, the loser, or the troublemaker-- there's a character you can identify with, and it shows that whatever and whoever you are, you can get along with someone who isn't in your clique.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain.
A Seed Vault

Everyone worries about fighting zombies.

Dumb. You see, when the zombies come, I'm holing up. A few weeks and if they are undead, they'll have rotted themselves to death. If they are fast moving, viral sumbitches, then they'll have likely ended up offing themselves through dehydration or whatever.

In any event, I'll wait them out. But then, I will need to rebuilt and eat.

(Besides, I have my trusty zombie-killing baseball bat, and a bow. Quiet. Efficient.)

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals.
This book on Aztec and Inca expansionism. I'm back in school, and my focus is Mesoamerican Studies. Eventual degrees, here I come!

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items.
Zucchini seeds.

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why?
A KitchenAid Mixer Why? I like to cook and bake. My mother has one that I used for years when I was a kid and still living with her. I'm 30 now. I remember she got it when I was like, 5. IT STILL WORKS. Over a dozen moves, being abused for holidays making bread and cookies and cakes, being used by my Dad (I swear, he looks at appliances and they break) and it STILL FUNCTIONS PERFECTLY.

I cannot think of a kitchen appliance that would be more useful.

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. EDIT A bread box is typically similar in size to a microwave.

This loft bed

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball.
How about 7 somethings? A set of dice.

16.) Something that smells wonderful.
Italian Herb Bread Mix It smells good when you open the box. When it's mixed. While it's rising. While it bakes. After it bakes. As you've slathered butter on it and begin to nom.

17.) A (SFW) toy.
Hawkeye is so SFW I would bring him in to put on my desk.

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school.
This book, of course.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be.
Funko Tyrion Lannister because even a small man can cast a great shadow.

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand.
This.

No one will understand the magnificence of this plushie.

It is a rotund, cuddly, snuggly Cthulhu.

But Cthulhu does not cuddle. He does not care. When the stars are right, he will rise from the deeps and from his seat Ry'leh, devour his cultists-- and everyone else-- by the millions, and bring forth an end to all things.

But how can you deny his Elder God wrath? HOW?! Look at him, all squishy and warm and soft. Look at his little T-Rex arms, reaching out for your love and devotion. His eyes, his wiggly little face tentacles. YOU MUST SNUGGLE HIM.

fear cuts deeper than swords

What do we say to death? NOT TODAY.

u/bookwench · 2 pointsr/ramen

You can absolutely cook ramen noodles in the microwave; I've done it tons at work. Put the noodles in the water, nuke for 5 minutes or more until done. Then either drain the water and just use the sauce packets to make flavored noodles, or leave some of the water and add the stuff you want.

Things you can add: amazon has dried veggies - you probably don't need the 120 servings package unless you're trying to make ramen for your whole unit, but there's other smaller packages like this sampler or you can get the stuff you like in individual packages (mushrooms, corn, carrots, etc). I found I like the cabbage because it ends up being a little bit sweet.

I don't know where you're gonna get eggs in the desert, but maybe your chow folks could hook you up? Hard boiled are good but if you can get raw, you can microwave them too - stir them up in a small bowl with whatever spices you like in your eggs (I have a sweet tooth so I add half a spoonful of sugar and some garlic and basil). Then nuke for 45 seconds, stir, nuke again for 35 seconds, stir, make sure they're cooked. You can dump them in the soup or have them as a side.

The other thing might be - do you guys have a chow hall that does a salad bar? Maybe ask the cook if you can have a spare carrot, or something. Chopped carrots in ramen are delicious and colorful. Never underestimate the delight a nice colorful meal can bring you on a miserable shift. It only lasts about 5 minutes, but damn, that's 5 minutes life isn't boring.

They do dried textured vegetable protein, or you can add jerky to your ramen for some meat flavor. Jerky was the first thing I learned to drop into ramen after cheese. Speaking of cheese, you can get one of those bottles of shelf-stable cheese and melt that into the ramen if you want it creamy. You can make a nice version of cream of mushroom soup that way. There's a whole section on mushroom powder if you don't feel like soaking whole mushrooms. Alternately, cheese powder. Be careful though; it can be wicked salty.

There's also a whole section of powdered soups that includes some wild stuff - you can make a nice curried pumpkin soup out of the pumpkin powder, if you want. It would probably be good on noodles too.

I know liquids are more expensive to ship, but a bottle of shrichana or some hoisen sauce make good flavors for the noodles for when you get solidly tired of the crap in the packets. I love hoisen sauce on my noodles.

Anyways, I don't know if those ones I linked are the cheapest ones - shop around on Amazon, or contact individual sellers and ask if you can get a military discount, maybe?

Good luck!

u/BeatMastaD · 18 pointsr/bugout

You just need to have what you might need, BOBs are generally for evacuations whereas what you are describing is just normal day to day things. I'll try to make a list anyway but you'll have to add things you want to have.

Since you don't plan on carrying this the bag could just be a large backpack, or even a duffle bag. You don't need the tacticool hi-speed lo-drag coolest BOB out there.

I would divide things into categories and keep them in their own dividers. For instance, you could get 2 of something like this and some sort of larger bag for all your clothing. It will make it much easier than just having a bag full of stuff. You could probably fit most clothing in one, and just have the jacket and jeans outside of it. You could also vacuum seal your clothing into compact flat bags to make them easier to handle.

Clothing

3 - comfortable t-shirts. You could even just buy a pack of 3 hanes shirts for the purpose.

1 - Jacket - just in case it's winter time

3 - underwear, whatever kind you wear

1 - athletic shorts

1 - pair of jeans

3 - pairs of socks

1 - towel? If they will provide showers but not towels

Toiletries

(all this should be travel sized, they sell everything I will name at walmart in travel sizes for $1)

1 - toothpaste

1 - toothbrush

1 - Shampoo/conditioner

1 - body wash (bar soap sucks to store after 1 use)

1 - deoderant (will melt and leak in a hot car, even the white powder kind. Keep this in mind

1 - pack of baby wipes. These are good for a 'hobo shower' which is likely what will be available to you. I would still bring the other stuff though just in case, and you can always wash your hair with a bucket of water to rinse.

Medications

These will spoil in a hot car, but you should keep a few days supply of any medications you might need on you somehow, or if there is a way to store them at the office do that (maybe they can be locked in a cabinet or something?) I'd keep them in an old prescription bottle with your info on it, you can scratch out the medicine name if you want.)

EXTRA GLASSES if you wear contacts or glasses.

Electronics

A completely spare phone charger that you will never remove from the bag unless you literally have no other choice. This cannot be left at home because you took it out and forgot to put it back in.

Other chargers for whatever you might need. If you might have your iPad for instance, bring a charger for that if it's different than phone.

You can consider a charging battery pack like this (I am not recommending that model though, it's first on Amazon)

Food

Don't know what kind of facilities they would have, but you can bring dehydrated food if there will be a way to boil water. If not you're going to have to stick with ready to eat foods like jerky, pop-tarts, tuna packets, granola bars, etc. Whatever you like, you won't want to be eating shitty food you hate in this situation.

Water

Typical recommendations are 1 gallon/person/day so that's 3 gallons. That's a lot of water to store, but if you need to then I'd recommend a case or two of water in the car. You want to switch these out every once in a while as plastic leeches into the water after a while. Just switch it every few months or so. You can also get a nalgene bottle and keep that full, but that's not even a days worth of drinking water.

If you somehow think you'll have non-potable water available and need a filter then I'd recommend this for cheap, this for a more pricey option that can also be more easily shared with others.

If you think you'll need to boil water/cook food you should be fine with this and a can of butane fuel for it. This you don't want to leave in a florida car in the summer either though.

u/rlconkl · 10 pointsr/PostCollapse

Great start! Feel free to x-post to /r/bugout, as they'll have some more suggestions. Here are my thoughts:

  • I agree with gittenlucky: if the first-aid kit is mostly off-the-shelf, you may want to consider adding some pain killers, anti-diarrhea, and any prescription meds you might require. Some people also recommend iosat tabs, if you're concerned about nukes. If you're comfortable collecting and using them, also consider minor surgical gear, antibiotics, etc. Maybe some sun/bug protection? If you're walking, moleskin and foot powder?

  • Although I noticed you have at least one pull-top food can, the P-38 can opener is lighter and surprisingly effective. If you're interested in lightening the load, they're available cheaply. Lighter than carrying cans, you might alternatively consider a stack of Datrex bars.

  • While the candles might be romantic on a calm day, I'd swap them out for a flashlight, head light, or a pack of chemical glow lights. Each stick lasts about 8 hours and is pretty bright.

  • Have you considered any defensive items, even if it's as benign as pepper spray?

Thanks for the raffle!

u/Wyldgecko · 1 pointr/Cooking

Gotta Have Astronaut Ice Cream

I don't know how messy they can get, but if you do some lime jello in ice cube trays with a string through the middle you can have them try to eat it in "Zero Gravity" like the astronauts do.

Get yourself space themed cookie cutters and you can turn anything into something space themed. Sandwiches, do something "different" like cucumber and pimento cut into whatever shape. Beef Jerky is popular on shuttles and the ISS. Fruits that can be stored at room temp are popular as well.

Hope that gives you somewhere to start.

u/mollymalone222 · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

I'm not in AU but Omega One Freeze Dried Brine Shrimp, (here is our link-don't know if you can get the same). The cubes inside are a bit larger than a half inch. You can very easily crumble off any amount you want. All my fish love it. But, it's great because it's small if you crumble it up for fry, yet can leave little chunks for larger fish.

u/Ilsensine · 2 pointsr/bugout

Basically you got a kit that is a GearWhores dream, what you don't have is a kit that will keep you alive for more than a few days.

  1. I want you to pile up all this shit you call a kit on Floor
  2. Place an empty box on your bed and put the following in it:
    A) the ability to clean and carry water.
    B) the ability to make fire.
    C) shelter to keep dry/warm (a simple poncho and Mylar Blankets at first)

At this point you could live for a couple weeks, and you've spent $40+ cost of pack

    D) food, start with compact shelf stable foods, like the dry emergency rations or these.
A couple weeks worth is like $20, now if you ration you could live for over a month.

3)Now throw away everything else left on the floor.
As the other person pointed out you have 60+ pounds of junk. That fact is a kit to keep you alive for over a month should cost $60 and fit in a shoe box.
u/ThrowAlert1 · 5 pointsr/sanfrancisco

ITT: people getting hung up about the gun(s).

You all wouldnt be saying shit if he put in a machete for self defense.

Moving on:

The powerbank should probably be one with a solar cell. It isnt going to be very much but if power is out, at least the sun will help a little.

Also I'm not sure how long this kit is supposed to last. According to FEMA, at least 72 hours if not longer. I've also seen some rumblings of a food supply to last two weeks.

Rations vs Supply

One's literally ready to go out of the wrapper the other needs prep.

An adjustable wrench as well to turn off water or more importantly natural gas flows

u/hamcake · 4 pointsr/funny

I've seen this on Amazon.com for much cheaper ($1500) but you'd definitely want to try the meals individually before buying the lot :)

Really, the best way to plan for disasters (zombies or otherwise) is to have a rotating stock of food that you actually eat and replenish.

On another note: Is zombiemeat edible? Will I turn into a zombie if I eat their meat? In a zombie apocalypse, zombiemeat will be plentiful. Is it kosher? These are important questions.

EDIT: Sorry, got excited and misread. Amazon feeds 1 person while Costco feeds 4. Big difference.

These are ones I have personally tried once, the eggs were okay. The rest were surprisingly good. Salt and pepper are a good idea.

Datrex Food Bars

There are several ways you can pack a tasty meal that doesn't take up much space. Something quick and easy would be a pouch of chicken/tuna, two tortillas, and some cheese to make quesadillas. Or some crackers instead. Rice also makes a light weight filling meal, and as the guy above said, stuffing works really well too.

Edit: Of course, I'm referring to extended trips. On a weekend hike cliff bars and all that are perfectly fine. I've just been planning to through hike the AT. While my personal gear may weigh ~25lbs, I only have a small portion of my ultralight gear purchased. Like the guy said, ultralight gear is expensive.

u/StrangerMind · 3 pointsr/preppers

I would look at survival rations. ER Bar, S.O.S. Rations, Mainstay, and Datrex were the brands I looked at. I ended up with Mainstay after a little research. There honestly appears to be little difference overall though so you could actually get whatever you can find cheapest or whatever little differences you prefer. One 3600 calorie package is supposed to last 3 days giving you 400 calories per day.

The biggest thing to remember is that these are made specifically to be light, compact, and the minimum you need to keep going for 3 days. You would not want to pack them for living for months off of but for 3 days they were the best alternative I could find.

u/scarypriest · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

Mountain House if you can boil water on a camp stove or electric kettle.

I keep some mountain house on my boat for when trips turn into unexpected overnights and they get the job done very well. The beef stew, stroganoff, and the chicken and rice are all pretty dang good and will give you plenty calories to burn cycling.

Edit: I just read that this is just for a homework assignment and you aren't actually doing this. You might have put that in the original post.

I found this which is just the entree portion which usually includes meat (unless you get vegetarian omelet...)

There's these which if they are US surplus is a pretty good price for the full MRE

Found this without the heater:

Honestly all I did was search MRE on Google to find these so I'm not sure if you're purposely trying to be combative or genuinely couldn't find them.

I just finished off eating a pack of DATREX bars. I had them in my GHB for 5 years and since they reached the end of their shelf life I rotated them out with some more practical energy bar snacks. The shelf life is shorter on the energy bars but I decided that emergency ration bars like the ones OP pictured should be a last resort kind of food source. FWIW - the 5 year old bars tasted just like fresh ones.

u/martinibini · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Ok you need a first aid kit because YOU NEVER KNOW and rocks are sharp.

You could also use FOOD, either in dehydrated form to cook with water on a camp burner, or in bar form.

HAVE FUN!

CANDY!!!!!!!!!!!

Astronaut food. I hope this counts as candy! If not I have a ton of candy on my food list. Thanks for the contest!

u/TehRealBabadook · 71 pointsr/Survival

putting a shitty first aid kit in this isn't going to do anything other than take up space. when you are designing a first aid kit, think about what you are going to use that kit for. In what circumstance are you going to need a first aid kit that is sealed in a water resistant container? Probably not in a vehicle because you can take your damn self to the hospital if you need to. But what if you cant? Now If you think the every day risk of serious injury is too great to not have a decent first aid kit, then I'll be the first to tell you that you will be just fine throwing an IFAK in a nylon pouch under your driver's seat and securing it with some rubber bands so it stays put until you need it. If you think you will need first aid supplies for more than one person just build an aid bag with an old back pack and throw that in the back and secure it in place with hook and loop fasteners or paracord. If you DON'T need that serious of a first aid kit, just put some band aids, neosporin, and a pair of tweezers and a bit of duck tape in a ziplock bag and throw it in your glove box. TLDR: using this box for first aid is dumb.

For your neat little survival box:

fishing line (can be used for more than just fishing)

more fishing supplies

survivial blanket(s)

emergency rations. (Below are two brands that I have had success with.)

- Ultimate Survival Emergency food rations

- Datrex emergency survival rations

water purification/Emergency water supplies. (datrex makes some that have a good shelf life)

a GOOD fixed blade knife that can take a beating

Signal mirror/signal flares

Things to start a fire effectively and efficiently (dont just put matches in it. put matches AND a lighter AND some wax coated cotton balls AND OOOO steel wool and a 9v battery. Always have a backup for fire.)

100 feet of paracord

A good, high quality, sturdy multi-tool

maybe a cigar if you are into that sort of thing.

Edit: whoa holy hell I got silver for this?! thank you. Being in the infantry has taught me a lot of valuable skills. If anyone wants to pick my tiny 11Bravo brain for knowledge, just let me know.

u/actualtango · 3 pointsr/Goruck

Answer by number:

  1. Pants. I like Prana, others wear the Goruck brand, some wear the ones you get at Walmart (very similiar to Goruck Simple Pants).
  2. Gu Gels or Clif Shots, Starburst, some kind of crackers or Datrex emergency bars, candy bar, 5 hour energy. That's it.
  3. If you're less than 2 weeks out and don't have shoes sorted your feet are likely not going to enjoy this. Trail runners are popular with Hoka and Altra leading that pack. The Goruck MACV-1s are also very popular. I wear New Balance currently and have tested them on the road and trail both doing long rucks. Whatever you get I would wear it 100% of the time between now and your event and do some practice rucks.
  4. Just a very light rain jacket. You will not be cold for long.
  5. Bring pedialyte electrolyte powder and mix them when you get a longer break. You shouldn't need more than 2 for this event.

You could try this.

Or, use good quality double-walled, vacuum insulated gear. Put the food in there piping hot and it should be good when you get there.

Or, make a portable solar oven.

u/Posseon1stAve · 1 pointr/AskReddit

The typical house has enough non-perishable food to last a while. You might want to supplement that with freeze dried food.

Water is another thing. You probably want to have several gallons of fresh water stored. Also, iodine tablets for treating dirty water is a good idea, or a water filter pump for backpacking.

Have a large first aid kit.

Have the ten essentials.

A backpacking stove is also nice. I basically do a lot of backpacking, and just have lots of extra supplies that I use for that. I figure if I have enough gear for a 2 week backpacking trip, then I have enough for 2 weeks in my basement.

No, no you can most definitely not buy freeze dried food and save money. Freeze-dried food is expensive, with freeze-dried meat often ridiculously so. Amazon charges $40+ for 1.76 lbs of hamburger. Buying it in bulk from sites (e.g. Safecastle) is not cheaper, since the markup is higher; Amazon is cheaper. Buying generic brands of normal non-freeze-dried food in bulk at a Costco or something is much cheaper and will taste better.

Learning to actually cook meals, especially other cuisines that aren't as meat-dependent as a lot of European/American styles, is a great skill to have if you legitimately want to save money on food but don't like subsisting on rice and beans every day.

Fine, get 2 of these; they are delicious for camping.

I was looking for actual ground beef for adding to spaghetti or chili. Got some good suggestions like this

Astronaut ice cream!

Happy payday! Mines not till tomorrow after 5pm.

It's OK. Amazon still has it on sale.

Why didn't she just put in an order to "Blue Apron" for 30 million meals? Or Amazon? Or Safeway? Or Kroger? They always want to sell "prepared meals".

There's always Amazon.

Pork crackling is also lightweight AND delicious.

Tactical Bacon.

He just has to find an Amazon distribution center. It may also be sold in some camping supply stores.

You know that might make a good episode. The search for bacon.

Can't go camping without it!

The cooking list is mostly my wife's, but we'd both like a new cookbook to try things out of.

I have a can sitting on my shelf right now. A buddy bought it for me a while back and I had it and it was actually pretty decent.

You can do dehydrated butter, dried scrambled eggs, and freeze dried beef if you want to try a slightly trail friendlier approach.

I like a good ole burger, and mainly packaged food. Its hard to cook a 4 course meal camping.

My brother in law swears by these things, link isn't the type, but similar. Just boil water.

As mentioned above. Try out local camping/outdoors sections of nearby sporting goods stores.

Or you can get it from Amazon, with Prime shipping even! Heck, you could set up an automatic recurring order to have it delivered to your house ever month!

While we're talking about things you can buy in bulk from Amazon, how about bulk cereal marshmallows? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FC9UPVI/

Becker BK22 - This knife is a freakin beast. I've batoned 4in thick hardwood logs with this badboy with no problems and it still held its edge. And at 1/4 thick you could pry open a car door with it if needed.

I actually buy cases of the stuff from time to time. The only one I don't like to eat is the buffalo chicken meal, because it tastes like lava.

u/belandil · 2 pointsr/Survivalist

It wouldn't hurt to have a small emergency food stash in some back corner. Here's something that's fairly self-contained. This type of thing is good for people who wait until the day before a hurricane hits to go out to the grocery store.

Mountain House Cooked Ground Beef https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000M7V1EA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_eVZPDb9CWSXKW. What i am getting at is that this is way cheaper to do it your own. The can in the link makes about 5lbs of ground beef. And for one of those 1 month supply packs you posted you could have over 1000$ worth off food for 250 if you convert it to mountain house. If someone has a family of 4 and wants a 3-6 month supply of food you would be spending 3k to 6k for mountain house for that time.

u/NotAReelclown · 2 pointsr/pics

i spray is all the time on my years worth of bucket food.

u/Snipe812 · 1 pointr/gifs

I recommend getting some Tac-Bac. Amazon is a little over priced but if you have any surplus stores or gun shops near you they probably have it. It's all precooked, just open the can and go to town. If you want it warm then microwave it.

u/VisitChechnya · 6 pointsr/Paleo

I think you might be out of luck staying paleo. Aim for the lower calorie items, stay away from the waffles and bagels.

You could also pack a ton of dehydrated foods. Beef and salmon jerky, dried mangos, bananas. ALMONDS. Seaweed is an option

Check this shit out

u/gizram84 · 2 pointsr/economy

Amazon has a 275 Meal Pack for $116. That would last a person about 3 months. Buy 4 of them and there's your year of food.

EDIT: After reading about this product, I want to specify, it's 275 servings, not 275 meals. Everything comes portioned in 5 servings.

u/tsarkees · 2 pointsr/Netrunner

In case I wasn't the only one who actually got hungry thinking about the product being launched, you can get a pack of 10 Neapolitan astronaut ice creams for about $30.

u/pixelgrunt · 2 pointsr/CampingandHiking

Astronaut ice cream! It's light, calorie dense, tasty, and lasts forever.

Not if it is Freeze Dried

u/swordstool · 1 pointr/ReefTank

I feed frozen brine/mysis cubes, and put it on the cubes as it's defrosting. Also I soak nori in it, but clowns probably aren't going to eat nori, usually for Tangs mainly. You can get freeze-dried food (mysis or brine shrimp), and soak that. I don't think you can really soak regular flake foods. What are you feeding them now?

Ah, sorry, misread that.

Mountain House offers freeze dried meat in #10 cans. Can't comment on a Canadian source for that that isn't overpriced.

LeBaron offers the other tins (including veggies - peas, beans, or corn) as well as the meals but I didn't see meat only.

u/FuRePo · 1 pointr/preppers

Emergency food rations like these from Mainstay have a 5 year unrefrigerated shelf life, and I imagine that if you refrigerate them they will last much much longer than that.

u/Drgreenthumbs69 · 1 pointr/dayz

Almost as cheap as 5lbs of muscle milk, but with variety! Also, think I could live off of these alone? http://www.amazon.com/Datrex-3600-Emergency-Food-Bar/dp/B001CSAHW0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347549344&sr=8-1&keywords=emergency+food

My idea is that if I can make each bar last for three days, it will be cheaper than a pure rice diet. Ideas?

u/HeloRising · 7 pointsr/preppers

Grizzly Gear - Tasty and chewy right out of the bag but it tastes like store-bought cookie dough.

ER - Edible but crumbly as hell and the sameness of the taste will drive you mad after a while.

Mainstay - Sweeter than eating actual sugar.

S.O.S. - Another "store-bought cookie dough" one.
