First- Congrats on your new kitty! They're so much fun and full of character, I'm sure you will love having one.

Others already hit on some great points, so I'll offer my personal favorites for keeping mess down and controlling shedding.

We wanted "the oldest cat in the shelter", happy to take a black one and/or male, maybe one that needed ongoing medicine, and had been waiting a long time, but one that would be happy to be an only pet, and a mostly indoor cat as at the time we both worked long hours in London. Preferably one with a bit of personality and one that actually liked people (comparatively). So, not much.

We visited Battersea and a couple of places locally but didn't find the right one until we went to Blue Cross in Cambridge. Where we found this tubby ball of fur - 12 and a half at the time and on daily metacam, over 15 now and healthy as anything. He took a little time to settle in and is still nervous of other men, but thinks I'm the best thing ever which is lovely.

We gave Blue Cross £80 and they let us pick him up the next day because we had all the stuff - litter tray, travel box, etc - organised already. he's insured (about £360/year and we're about even) and gets nice Royal Canin satiety food (only £15 a month or so) which stops him begging. Mostly.

Recommend this nice big litter box with a roof, and we use Catsbest clumping eco litter made of sawdust, it honestly stops the house smelling bad.

Find out whether the cat responds to catnip, if it does then get them stoned, it's hilarious. Easy to grow too, it's like mint, just put some seeds in a pot on a windowsill.

Oh yes - and when you get them home make sure they have somewhere to hide. Mine lived under the sofa for most of the first week, they come out and explore at night when it's all safe.

When we lived in an apartment, the first one was a studio. The litter box was set up downstairs, underneath the stairs, we eventually ended up moving it to the back door for privacy while using the box. We had hardwood floors, so if you do as well, I would recommend a mat so it’s easier to clean and your cat won’t track as much litter across the floor after using it.

We used to use a litter genie but buying the refills became expensive so we would just keep all our grocery bags in the pantry and use those to scoop the box and then tie them up and toss them in with the regular trash. I wouldn’t recommend directly putting the poop in your trash bc if you don’t accumulate as much trash, your cat’s poop will just sit in the regular open trash and the smell is terrible. So I highly recommend scooping into a grocery bag or even doggy poop pick up bags. They’re super cheap.

I hate being able to smell poop in the box, so I would scoop whenever I heard the cat finish using the box. If you don’t have that much time, i would recommend twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. Keeping it clean also ensures that your cat won’t go outside the box. Cats are weird like that. If the box is too dirty, they won’t like going in to use it. But by “completely clean it” you mean dumping all the litter and washing the box and then putting in clean litter all over again, we only really did this if poop got on the side of the box. Other than that, I think it’s recommended to keep the box 2/3 filled so usually once a week, I would pour in a bit more litter to keep it filled 2/3 of the way.

Sorry this is so long. I’m pretty much done. My last point, which was a lifesaver, was getting a litter box with a cover that has a swinging door. There’s various versions/brands. We got ours from Walmart, I don’t remember the brand. But it’s a lifesaver. It really diminishes the smell, there’s also a vent on the side and your cat has complete privacy. They also make litter box deodorizer that you can get at the dollar store.

Good luck with your new car! Hope this helps.

I got this for my cat when he was about four months old. He loved the system. I didn't have any trouble getting him to use it. I did have to keep two litter boxes because he is such a 'big pisser' that he would stop using the Scoop Free long before he should because of the amount of urine. When I would change out the two boxes, he always used the Scoop Free box first. My cat got two tall for the hood and I had to take it off, he never noticed any difference. I do like the counter on this system. Do wish that the box was bigger as my cat is quite a big boy now, he is Eight years old.

You will next want to invest in the Forever Litter Tray https://www.amazon.com/Forever-Litter-Trays%C2%AE-Replacement-Durability/dp/B001OCJXRO/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=scoopfree+tray&qid=1571805634&sr=8-4The pre-filled trays are very expensive. I did use one of the paper trays for quite a while (before purchasing the Forever Tray) by wrapping it in tin foil and then duct tape. Totally liquid free and did last a really long time, like six months. But I broke down and purchased the Forever Tray and have never been happier.

With the Forever Tray you will need to purchase crystal litter on your own. I do not know where you are located, but I used to purchase my cats litter at Publix. If you have Publix, look for Ultra Pet Litter. A one month bag is about $10.00, sometimes on sale for $9.00 and even $8.00! The good thing about this litter is that for every Six UPC codes that you send in to the company, they will send you a coupon for a free bag of litter. My cat, with his large amount of urination, a bag or the Scoop Free Trays, would not last a month, still don't, so I would use probably two bags of litter a month sometimes three bags, so I was fairly quick in getting lots of free bags of litter from this company. One time Publix had $2.00 off coupons for Ultra Pet Litter and that week it was on sale for the $8.00, I had many, many coupons and purchased many, many bags!

I did see that Amazon.com has a lot of Crystal litter choices. So if you have no Publix you will be able to easily purchase Crystal litter at Amazon.com Good Luck!

Thanks for responding. Good to know the shelter is no-kill, that is important. A few things I would recommend but most of them do cost money so its up to you if you want to give them a shot.

  • talk to the vet about behavior meds. Maybe prozac isn't right but there are others that may help. As you pointed out, she is obsessively licking. Obsessive licking to the point where fur is gone is a huge warning sign and the cause of that could be the cause of her litterbox issues.

  • try the feliway, probably the room diffuser. People I know have had mixed results but maybe it will help your cat (the idea is that is puts out "happy cat smells" so they don't pee everywhere - people can't smell it) Put it in the rooms you don't want her peeing in.
    http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B003E6WSHK

  • Try a self-cleaning litterbox. If your cat is extra concerned about cleanliness maybe scooping the litterbox once a day isn't enough for her. Sounds like a hassle but there are some cheaper solutions out there now. I suggest the Simply Clean or the Littermaid.
    SimplyClean: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000GF0X38
    Littermaid: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0097576MY

good luck, whatever your decision. :)

EDIT: saw your post about the feliway above, sorry for repeating. responded to your post before reading other replies.

As the wiki will tell you it's pretty straight forward. I just observed where my buddy liked to urinate and put a litter box in that corner. Get a relatively good sized box for him. Something like This will do. Next step is to understand they typically urinate and poop when they are eating. So put his food and water right in reach of the box itself. Next fill it up with litter, protip use something like this. Crazy cheap from TS and they absorb everything. Then grab a handful of hay and put it in the box itself. They will nibble on that while they use the restroom. Replenish daily. Soon enough you should see a vast improvement. 4 weeks later my bun is exclusively peeing in his and nearly perfectly pooping in it as well. Best of luck!

u/geekykitten · 1 pointr/Rabbits

This was at Target for like $3. I had to trim off the lip on the sides (wirecutters), and it fits perfectly. Its absolutely beautiful :')

Any litterbox that is max 11.5"x17" at the base (the printed dimensions are the top of the box, which is a lot wider) will fit. Though I haven't tried, I would imagine any of these (1 2 3 4) would work as well. There is about 1.5" of extra space in the back (the litterbox is a little shorter than the carrier), but I usually just store their (empty) food dish sideways in the slot, and it keeps anything from moving around. If its a longer trip, I wire their water bottle to the front grill and it drips into the litterbox. I have to take off the top to get the box in and out - it doesn't slide in/out through the grill door, that would be too perfect! - but its really easy, hardly any inconvenience.

I think you are the one who recommended this carrier to me a couple months ago. I adore it!

u/PurpleTittyKitty · 1 pointr/cats

Recently drove two cats for 13 hours. Wasn't the nightmare I was expecting. Two products I bought:

  • Feliway, a synthetic version of cat pheromones, to relieve anxiety. Sprayed some in the cat carriers, and also inside the new place, before they were let loose. It helped them quiet down during the ride, and also to more quickly get used to the new place. (One cat hid for only a couple of hours and the other cat just went investigating immediately!)

  • Pee pads! These were put in the bottom of the carrier just in case of accidents, of which there were none. (They also had leashes/harnesses to take them out in case they wanted to go, but that didn't work. Too scared!) They both ended up going in the new place, once they felt comfortable. With the longer trip you have... this may be a little less feasible. Maybe also buy a cheap-o litter bin and bring some litter, in case you can tell they need to go. (Disposable litter bin might be a great way to go here, nothing to keep around or clean)

Hope this helps, and good luck with your new adventure!
u/sdkingv · 9 pointsr/Rabbits

Hi! Your bun looks exactly like my bun Horchata when he was younger

here he is!

When he was smaller we built him a living space with storage cubes and it worked really well. You just buy a pack of cubes and some zipties off Amazon, then cut up an ikea floor mat for the ground. We just made him a house out of cardboard. Make sure there are 2 exits for the house.

Also if you have lots of space you can do an X-pen . (This is a taller foldable fence that most people are suggesting here). That is probably the most popular idea on here too as it gives them more room to run around and be active. Our guy was free roam and only really went into the cage when sleeping.

You’ll also need a litter box that they can get in and out of easy, I recommend something similar to these just line the tray with shredded compostable litter and and bunch of hay, it’s almost a requirement for them to eat hay while the go to the bathroom. If she isn’t potty trained, having the hay only in the litter box is a great way to get them started as they eat hay all day long and will tend to go where the hay is.

Hope this all helps!

Are you using a normal litter pan or are you using a corner pan? If you are using a normal littler box, a corner pan might fit better in your ferret's new chosen poopy spot. If neither of those is working you could try custom making your own with a cardboard box and some plastic wrap.

I've had a few ferrets over the years and I wish I could tell you that I managed to train them to only go back to their cage to poop... I had one with perfect bathroom habits for about 6 months until we got him a little sister. Then he decided to follow her lead and poop wherever he got the inspiration to. I think they both knew what they should have been doing but they liked watching me play musical corner pans and scrub the carpet when they switched corners without warning. In other words, when it comes to ferret bathroom habits, I think they train you more than you train them.

As for scrubbing the carpet, white vinegar with a few squirts of dish soap in it will get the carpet clean and get rid of all traces of the smell. I keep a spray bottle with the mixture in it; it is also great for cleaning bathrooms. It won't exactly deter them but, by not having any trace of the smell left, it will keep them from continuing to poop in the same spot just because they smell traces from the last time. Maybe saving some of his poop and putting it in the litter pan in a more appropriate area, along with scrubbing the lingering smell out of his old spot, will give him the right idea?

Two cats + 1 very large dog owner. For the cats, we use disposable litter box trays -- I find that this helps with not only deodorizing, but also with preventing pee smell from infusing into the plastic cat box. (You can find them here https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Disposable-Litter-2-Pack/dp/B0087Y5OIE/ref=sr_1_17?crid=1YO7JVAXQJ6ET&keywords=litter+box+liners&qid=1556994822&s=gateway&sprefix=litter+box%2Caps%2C161&sr=8-17) We clean the cat boxes about every other day, and throw out the whole box about every 7-10 days. We also make sure this room has plenty of ventilation (we usually have a fan going) and I like to mop the floor about once a week to wipe up any grime.

For the dog, we make sure we wash his bed frequently and he gets regular baths. He has wet food that I cannot stand the smell of, so we feed him outside.

Some other things that I think help: vacuuming regularly, because animal fur and dander can leave behind an odor. I have a roomba that has helped tremendously. I also am a fan of essential oils/candles/all the nice smelly stuff and usually will have something lightly scented in the room.

I have the Littermaid:
http://www.amazon.com/Littermaid-LM980-Mega-Self-Cleaning-Litter/dp/B004HGXVOK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1369004931&sr=8-2&keywords=littermaid

When I used to work long hours it was the best solution and I only empty it once a week. Twice/three times if it got too stinky but that hardly happens. When I got a second cat into the mix it was an even bigger help. Good investment. It also helps when going away for weekend trips. Never have a worry while I'm away.

I'm on my second one (original one was bought at a Walmart for $80 and died after a little over a year bc it was cheap). This one though is much more powerful and picks up more stuff. So I would say yes if you could bring an outlet to the wall, it would be worth it.

Also, don't buy into the replacement receptacles. I just put a plastic bag from the supermarket over it so their waste goes right into the bag. I just then pick it up and toss it away and the replace with another one. Definite money saver.

u/floodingthestreets · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

You can keep them restricted to a smaller area to help curb bad litter habits. Give them more freedom again as they improve.
These litter boxes with high sides will help prevent litter from being kicked out.

This may be a seasonal change and will likely subside in a few weeks with you encouraging better behavior.

Other things you can do to keep them entertained include using treat dispensing balls to make them work for their pellets. Add more boxes, tunnels, and hidey holes to their enclosure. Cheap fleece blankets can give your buns something to dig into without making a big mess.

u/MeishkaD · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I am saving for a glorious Cat Genie! If you are not familiar with these, you hook them into your sewer system and they do all the work for you. Once a month you switch out a cartride, amazing! We have three cats, a dog, and a baby. My days are endless loops of poop maintenance. I would love to have less poo to deal with in my life. I am sure you understand.

u/summerstorms17 · 3 pointsr/Hedgehog

Oh man, the danger is real for me, no doubt.... I just sketched out a cool cage based on your design and a set of wire mesh cube shelves. I can't wait to try to put it all together! I love weekend projects that involve a trip to the hardware store. :-) I'm going to do a smaller litter box for sure though, I usually do a 10x10 litter box at the largest and then use fleece for the rest of the bedding, it's much easier to clean. You could use the same base pan that you have, add a smaller section for litter, and cover the coroplast base in fleece! That way the bottom is still easy to clean because it's plastic, and the litter box is easier to remove. I lately I've been trimming down the sides of a natures miracle disposable litter pan so it's not too tall for them and it'll fit under the wheel well enough. But be careful, I've totally sliced myself cutting those down, too... it was a very sharp knife!

I do need to find a good way to keep him from tracking litter all over his cage though... I'm thinking of trying out one of those litter mats for cats but I'm not sure if his little feet would get caught in it!

u/mas_tequila · 2 pointsr/AnimalsBeingDerps

We bought this one from Amazon for like $20. My cats love it and I love that it keeps our dogs from going in for snacks.

>The shelter and all the pet stores in town only have the small triangular litter boxes which no one likes. How come stores are not stocking the larger square litter boxes anymore??

FTFY: Which no one likes I don't like.

"Small" is pretty vague, so I'm not sure which litter box you are referring to as they come in various sizes. In fact I think there is an even larger triangle style box above the size I normally buy in the stores.

I have these Triangle Litter Boxes, which I wouldn't say are small. It is 10" x 10" x 14" which in my opinion is just fine and doesn't take up too much real estate in their cage. They are also great for your corners as my girls seem to use the ones I have around the room more than the one in their cage. I even used one in this Hard-Sided Travel Carrier after I put Velcro tape on the bottom of it to attach it to the carrier. I was able to put their favorite bed and the litter box in there. I also hung a hammock from the top and hung their food and water bowls off the door. It was only a 5 hour drive, but just another reason I love these litter boxes.

u/badlcuk · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

Yes, you can retrain your adult dog to use indoor solutions :) I like doggy litter boxes but you can also go with a lawn style potty area. I dont really suggest pads as I find they are similar texture to carpet and that can be an issue (at least for puppies), but its up to you. These things are typically what I see locally used by seniors as nice solutions when they cannot go out as much or as fast as they would like.

Mine is 19 inch wide 22.4 inch long. Your current box looks smaller than that haha. I use the Catit jumbo hooded cat pan.

It's got a really big door that can be left open so it's almost like it's not a covered one. Whisker city makes a jumbo tub at PetSmart that's 34 long and 19 wide. It's an uncovered one. Here's the link for that one

The more space the better they love it!

I’ll advocate for cat here! Same apartment situation as you, and my boyfriend and I rescued a kitten a few months ago. We purchased a covered litter box from amazon basics and arm and hammer clump and seal litter. We’ve had guests come over to our apartment and they claim that you would never know a cat lived with us. We clean the litter box every night and change out the litter and scrub down the box once a month. As a person with a very sensitive sense of smell, I can also say I’ve never had a moment where I can smell her litter. Just make sure you pour a good 3-4 inches of litter and you’re set!

I have this: Omega Paw Elite Self Cleaning Roll 'n Clean Litter Box, Midnight Black, Large https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074L82WFD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3Rk9AbT96MXNJ. It's a bit expensive, but so worth it!

Roll it slowly until is almost upside down, hit the bottom two or three times to lossen up the litter that got stuck at the bottom, turn it right and take out the scoop on the side. It only take 3 minutes top. If you're confused (like everyone is the first time I try to explain it), start this video at 1:35 https://youtu.be/ySGsis-W10A

And it's really big. I have two cats and when is full of litter I can take two days to clean it. I could leave it for more time (a friend of mine does), but I don't like to leave it for too long and is easy to do.

Dsiposable litter boxes with Fresh Step clumping litter are the best thing I've ever used- and I've tried everything over the years. A very wide, sturdy scoop and unscented biodegradable poop bags with handle ties to keep the used litter & bacteria contained and odor-free in trash can. No mess, no litter spilled on the floor.

Scooping only takes a minute and the large poop bags with tie handles are worth every penny. One box lasts me 2 years, I scoop every other day- 1 cat. This makes scooping so much less of a pain in the ass.

I use Nature's Miracle disposable cat boxes- I get the Jumbo and use it inside of a covered litter box. But they are totally fine on their own, they do not absorb pee, leak or fall apart. I have one cat and I toss the Nature's Miracle box every 2-3 months, litter & all then replace with a new box and fresh litter. I NEVER smell the catbox at all and will NEVER scrub out a litter box again!

Yeah I wouldn't sleep in the same room as my printers either :)

As for the dust issue.. we pretty much solved it by buying a litter box with a lid and a door, that might be worth a try.

u/mydarlingmuse · 4 pointsr/ragdolls

I got one of these for mine, in the larger size. It's the biggest box I've had for any of my cats, and I love that it's top entry (so much less litter everywhere). It might take a little getting used to for your furkids to jump into, but I love it so far.

u/mydogbelle · 1 pointr/personalfinance

Buy the cheap kitty litter and use disposable kitty litter boxes. Slide the crap laden tray into a kitchen bag, tie it, and leave it outside. Have bf toss it into the garbage can. Done with minimal or no contact with kitty litter.

https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Disposable-Litter-Regular/dp/B0087Y5OOS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467177004&sr=8-2&keywords=disposable+kitty+litter+box

I wish I wasn't allergic to cats. I love them! Anyway, good luck!

u/AwfulWaffleWalker · 2 pointsr/CatsAreAssholes

I could never use a front entry. My oldest cat would just poop out side of it (she's a really big cat so I think it was uncomfortable to her) and my younger cat would still fling litter out of it. This is the one I use. They both love it. Especially because after they're done pooping they can get on top and marvel at their creation.

u/HoBamaMo · 3 pointsr/rolltide

You'll save money over time by spending less on cat litter. It eventually pays for itself. Totally worth it. Get the cover if you have a dog that like to eat shit... I may or may not be speaking from experience... 👀👀

Well this is frustrating....$2.74 and $3.00. (From the kitty and Under $6 wishlists, respectively.)

Also, this is more than $3 so I'm not entering it, but it's my favorite add-on item on my wishlist. It cracks me up so much! Of course my cat needs a snuggie!

Sure, I'd love to help. :P That's actually one of the primary reasons why I started looking into flushing the litter. I couldn't find any litter that didn't leave behind a rancid smell even hours after they had used it. I have multiple litter boxes and 3 cats and was always cleaning and emptying litter boxes.

So I looked into different types of litters. A lot of the flushable litters are environmentally safe, for example. There are mulch based (which are fucking terrible, btw), corn based litters (which are decent but can still smell if you have more than one cat and aren't completely diligent with emptying it everytime they go), and fine grained clay based litters.

I tried a few different kinds, ordered some off the internet, specialty pet stores, pretty much everything. I ended up loving this one. It doesn't hold odor at all, has 3 ingredients, it doesn't smell chemical based, it dries quickly and thoroughly and it doesn't leave the room dusty. I have a rug under the cat box that catches anything that they might track away even, but it's never an issue.

As far as disposal, I use this thing (called the litter locker), which seals off the smell in between taking it outside. It has a plastic liner, but I just loosely knot the bottom, empty it into a double stacked paper bag, staple and throw it into the trash can. I've never had a problem with any kind of bag seepage because it's completely dry when I empty it from the cat box anyway-which solves the plastic problem. I also use this litter box, which means I don't touch the cat crap at all (except when I empty the boxes and litter locker completely for sanitization).

There are lots of options. :P

I had an older cat who was fastidious about her litter box. Seriously, if you weren't hovering behind her waiting to scoop her precious royal poopsies, she'd get mad and go crap under the bed the next time. When she died it was hell cleaning the house.

The best thing that helped was using a Kitty's Wonderbox inside the regular litter box and changing it completely every other week. She also liked the Nature's Miracle Crystal Litter and when I added Cat Attract to the litter. Those things would get me the best result and then if I slacked off it was all over.

  1. Buy him a covered litter box (like this ). Put in in a corner of a room, or between the end of a couch / cabinet and wall. Cats feel vulnerable when eating, drinking and pooping, so give him a safe space.

  2. Clean up after the fucking cat! He looks like he needs to be rescued from that literal shit hole.

Yep it's from Amazon, we have one too for one of the kitties that likes to poop off the side of the box. linky

You want this:

Same idea, doesn't need disposable liners. I have one and it works great.

I feel like you're going to spend at least $150 on printing material (also, will it be urine-tight? Don't want that leaking). Another $40 on sensors and stuff. Another $40 on a raspberry pi and the odds and ends.

A CatGenie is far superior. $270 and you don't have to replace the litter. Just top up the granules once a month. It plumbs in, so no emptying waste bags or anything. I literally haven't had to think about the cats litter for more than 30 seconds in the last year, and that was just to put a new box of cleaner in.

There's also a large hacker community, so you can flash your own programming to it.

I would recommend this one

What about the Cat Genie? I love the concept and execution and reviews are mixed between 5 and 1 which can indicate good product, dumb users.

u/wellhushmypuppies · 1 pointr/Pets

I use a plastic liner with this on top. Makes life so much easier.

u/lordofthederps · 1 pointr/cats

No sure if you're dead-set on having a top-entry litter box, but [this one](http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LVGL1A "Amazon page") is what I've been using for the past few weeks. I was a little skeptical at first, but the rolling mechanism really does work; at times you may still need to open it up and free some of the smaller clumps that get stuck, but it's a far cry from having to scoop poop everyday.

My cat's never had a spraying problem, though, so I don't really know if it will help in that regard.

u/csaliture · 2 pointsr/AnimalsBeingDerps

I just bought this one for $18 on amazon. My cat throws litter everywhere so I thought I'd see if this type of box helps.

u/icefreez · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Yeah, that seems way to high for what it does. You can get a manual roll litter box for $60. So... that roughly translates into $440 worth of electronics...

u/b1ackcat · 1 pointr/cats

We did get him as a kitten, and I thought about the size of the box. I suppose it's possible. I'm not sure if we have the largest size, but this looks to be the same ones we use:
http://www.amazon.com/Van-Ness-CP6-Enclosed-Litter/dp/B0002ASCGC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1370626416&sr=8-3&keywords=covered+litter+box

Looks like that's a large already.

He's not hanging out of the edge though, I've seen him as he's finishing up. He's fully outside the box. He gave me a really mean look for watching him too :S

u/Tiver · 2 pointsr/DIY

I recently got this "self-cleaning" litter box. By self-cleaning they mean, you can roll it over and back, and slide out tray and dump it. It's not perfect, but if you actually stay on top of it daily, it is a lot better than scooping through.

Maybe not good for your situation, but one option.

u/reallyjustsam · 2 pointsr/blackcats

For the bigger one: https://www.amazon.com/LitterMaid-LM680C-Automatic-Self-Cleaning-Classic/dp/B0097576MY/

It's important to get this one because it requires these little plastic boxes as poop holders, BUT when you don't use them, there's just a hole. So then you can hang it off of a shelf and put a trashcan underneath. Works great.

Here's my setup for upstairs: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Tzg2V43ar5hmwa6b7

Excuse the mess ;)

I have a similar setup downstairs but only have the round ones.

You can improvise to replace the litter and use Foreever trays like one below and cheaper crystal litter of the same size.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OCJXRO

u/FancyDressKitten · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

You can get a litter box that your cat enters from the top. One with a flap might work as well.

u/ZubinJohnson · 1 pointr/cats

Scoopfree uses Crystal litter trays which are disposable (3 trays are 45 bucks). As an alternative, you can get a permanent tray and use Fresh Step or other cheaper crystal brand.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AEFRJK0

It is a tradeoff between convenience and cost.

Regarding Cat Genie, you can check the following video that covers the setup and overview:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjK13Tt7c8c

Finally, Omega Paws is a "mechanical" self-cleaning litter box. You need to manually roll-it to collect the feces in one place. It is not smart or automatic, but it costs under 50 bucks.

Just a heads up, I have this for my cats: Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box

u/msgsquared · 1 pointr/Portland

Cat genie! An automatic cat toilet.

u/chooter · 1 pointr/shutupandtakemymoney

Hey, at least it's not a cat genie.

u/Krynja · 1 pointr/pics

When looking at the time and the stink of constantly cleaning a litter box, this doesn't seem that bad a price

u/grundelstiltskin · 1 pointr/shittyrobots

I researched all the automated cleaning litter boxes but never bit the bullet. They all had complaints about them breaking down. I ended up spending a fraction of what they typically cost on one I roll myself like this and I have no regrets.

I might get the litter robot one day if I can justify it because it's the only one with decidedly great reviews (and a ridiculous $450 price tag).

u/thesonofapreacherman · 3 pointsr/Pets

Fight the power! Buy your own freaking plastic grocery bags. 2.5 cents apiece!

http://www.amazon.com/T-Shirt-Carry-Out-Bags-Recyclable-Plastic/dp/B001EGZXK6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372720924&sr=8-1&keywords=T-shirt+bags

We have 4 cats too. Best goddamn litter box ever. Just roll it upside down, roll it back, and pull out drawer full of perfectly sifted cat litter.

http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Paw-Self-Cleaning-Litter-Large/dp/B000LVGL1A/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1372721067&sr=8-3&keywords=rolling+litter+box

Also, î fill the empty plastic tubs of litter with used litter. They seal up pretty well and get taken out to garbage once full. This works because the litter boxes are in basement and away from our living area. Might be gross in a small apartment.

Hell, here's one more kitty life pro tip. Install cat doors on interior doors to rooms the cats are allowed into. We have one for our bedroom and one for the basement. Cats can get to basement for litter boxes and food and to get away from dogs. They can get out of bedroom if trapped so they don't piss on the bed.
