🎓 Reddit experts on fishing tackle storage products
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where fishing tackle storage products are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
My solution is the Plano angled tackle box: http://amzn.to/2iGo49J that holds 72 small-base ships. It is out of stock online, but nearly every Walmart carries it for 59.99. Additionally, it has two smaller containers that are perfect for tokens and additional storage.
This is my set-up, and the Plano kit is essential for my concise storage and lack of jostling during transport: http://imgur.com/gallery/Syn5K
For the Epic ships, I bought Stanley toolboxes because they are cheap lock well and could be used for tools in the future if I discover alternative storage.
I do not display anything, as I do not feel possessing these toys is something that merits commemoration or observation. I don't place the cars and family pegs from LIFE on a shelf, so it seems silly to me to exalt pieces from a board game regardless of how intricate the pieces or rules are. I enjoy it, but my shelves are filled with personal items and commemorations of lost family members. An A-wing would feel disrespectful.
Anyway, I now have to make a purchase of more storage, and while I think the Plano cases are brilliant, I am now looking at Feldherr foam kits on Amazon for basic storage. They have several generic kits that hold a large number of small-base ships while still affording specialized storage (through pick'n'pluck foam) for large-based ships.
In the end, it will come down to bang-for-buck, and the WalMart plano cases look to be able to hold their own very easily.
Happy Hunting!
Thanks for the complement about the picture! The 2 flashes are mounted on the boat's tower via bungee cords and using a mini flexible tripod as the base. I put one at eye level and on the other side I put one on the top. Gives a coverage pattern kinds like this allowing for pictures like this until the flashes get too hot and then the recycle time sucks. More power is always nice as that should allow for more pops before it over heats in theory; action shots are brutal on a flash.
In terms of raw power a quick comparison is to look at the battery size and the recycle time. So 14.4v 2.9A = 41.76W for the AD200 vs 11.1v 2.0A = 22.2W for the v860ii; so the AD200's battery is ~2x more powerful. Now take into account the recycle time 2.1s vs 1.5s and then multiply it by the battery output to get total power: 2.1 41.76 = 87.7 vs 22.2 1.5 = 33.3. The AD200 is 2.6x more powerful which is about 1.6 stops better. Add in the 200mm zoom and I think the v860ii wins in this case. Using the same math I get that the AD600 is 2.7 stops better than the V860ii so I think this is a pretty good estimate.
For more fun I want to try and put the flash in a ziploc in a box like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003JFOZH2 as I think it will barely fit (inside is 7.5" x 3.125" x 2.5"; flash is 7.5" x 3.0" x 2.5" ) as that will allow for the flash to be put just about anywhere allowing for the light to be coming through the wave for a cool effect like this http://strobist.blogspot.com/2007/07/awesome-diy-pvc-flash-housing.html
Hey man, some quick tips on your bag. First, figure out its purpose. Is it designed to get you from work to home, where you have more resources? Or are you planning on being supported by it for longer periods of time?
-Lose the can opener and get something like this. That thing is way too much weight to carry for the possibility that you may have to open a can of spaghetti-o's.
-You're going to need more water, especially if you plan on eating those brick rations. Throw in some bottled water and just swap it out every so often.
-You need better first aid. As I see it, you pretty much have pills and bandaids. Since you're just starting out, I recommend going to a sporting goods store and picking up two things-- a premade first aid kit (whatever size/price you're comfortable with, as long as you know how to use everything in it) and a small tackle box to keep all those pills in. Write the medication type, how many mg per pill, and expiration date on each compartment. No sense in carrying around all those bottles.
-You need a better multitool. You don't need to buy an eighty dollar Leatherman, but that thing looks like you got it out of a cereal box. A couple of weeks ago I picked up this knife and multitool set from Home Depot, and they're pretty good for backups. Husky hand tools also have a lifetime warranty.
-You need a better flashlight. /r/flashlight can help you out here.
-You could probably stand to lose a blade or two.
-What do you have planned for the smoke bombs?
-Check out /r/bugout.
A large tackle box works very well, along with baggies for the different pieces/markers of course. I don't remember what model, but this looks right: http://www.amazon.com/Plano-758-005-4-Drawer-Tackle-Box/dp/B000E39T28
Tiles go in the top right, borders (we also have long plastic borders) go in the flat space on top. Cards (separated into appropriate categories) go in the top drawer, pieces in the next two.
If you want to be sure, find your nearest outdoor store (we went to bass pro shops), take all your catan boxes in and sit on the floor putting stuff into different tackle boxes until you find the solution that fits you best.
While the really useful boxes are nice (since someone else mentioned them), I wouldn't recommend them for catan. I do use them for Mage Knight though, but that's a very different set of pieces.
It might sound weird, but a tackle box can be a good to-go container for hobbyists. You can get ones with plastic trays that fold out to hold assorted minis and dice to keep at hand instead of having to put stuff away.
For character sheets, I’d go for a nice little accordion folder. You can separate stuff out, and still have it handy. Either that or something like a milk crate with a set of drop down folders. The hanging manilla ones are great and cheap.
Lastly, for books, you can install a bookshelf or any kind of shelf and slap some bookends on there. Keep books handy that you need. If you have some older edition ones you might not need quick access to your bog standard plastic container should do fine.
Edit: https://www.amazon.com/PLANO-Tackle-Systems-Hybrid-White/dp/B00OY9JS7Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524876196&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=tackle+box&psc=1
This is the sort of box that I was thinking of.
Well, this works for me: Keep things focused and lightweight.
The silicone boxes are pretty heavy, IMO, so I avoid those.
I have one box with "extra" flies that I leave in the car. I then carry with me three fly boxes:
It is a really really solid game, and if you end up loving it as much as we did, there are some very simple amazon purchases you can make to make setup take <5mins.
Power Tile holder - Cut off 1 row and the binder holes and you can store all of the power tiles in here. These fold in half and fit perfectly in the box. Setup is as simple as taking the 3 sheets out of the box and done!
Player boxes - Put each colored players pieces in these boxes (battle cards, miniatures, prayer point tracker, turn tracker, and action tokens). With the last extra box, put the Divine Intervention cards and all of the small extra silver/gold action tokens. If you can find ones that are slightly deeper you could even fit each of the 3 colored pyramids.
Victory Point holder - Holds all of the victory points in their own compartments.
I'm like you and have a couple clear parts organizers full of random parts. I like the ones that /u/louky posted for larger items like power supplies. I've been looking at this one on amazon for a little bit and like the idea of having an organizer for my organizers and a place to put tools in the top.
I use the Milwaukee Stackable organizers for work. They have removable bins in the main unit. But I think that they may be too big and bulky for this application and they aren't able to make anything inside easily seen like a clear one.
Depending on how handy you are, you could always buy a bulk amount of those parts organizers and build a bookshelf style unit where you can slide in an individual organizer in to each shelf.
Edit: Formatting
It's the bottom piece of a Stanley click and connect set. Absolutely perfect for armada. You can get a big top box and lower part combo (this piece) on amazon and then buy as many lower pieces as you want.
In the top I have all medium and large ships plus a Plano case for tokens. The two compartments in the lid hold dice and command dials perfectly in one with damage deck, objective tokens, and speed dials in the other.
One lower box contains all my small base ships and another lower has all my many squadrons.
Stanley Hand Tools STST19900 Click & Connect 2-in-2 Deep Tool Box And Organizer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NBJ8GBF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_MFZwzbF7J4YBB
It can be really cheap or overly priced on amazon. Hardware stores might have it. I love that I can keep adding layers to it. And honestly, a small Plano holds more than enough defense tokens, objectives, etc. this one fits right in the upper box resting on the yellow dividers. Since the lid is deeper where the handle is on top, the Plano isn't squished when the lid closes.
Plano Moldings #3600-20 Utility Stowaway Organizer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C9ZULAI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_sKZwzb3NG29N7
I used Rubbermaid totes for the longest time, but eventually found Plano totes. They have a positive latch, and the seal groove is a bit better. The 68 quart tote is a good size.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007TOHI7I
This is one of the shittiest LPTs I have ever seen.
First of all, those bottles are designed to keep water in, not out. Secondly, the narrow mouth (it's a bottle afterall) is going to keep you from fitting a lot of things in, and give you difficulty in removing them.
Thirdly and most importantly, most of the bottles are more expensive then an actual case designed to be waterproof. Use something that is actually designed to be used the way you intend, and you will get much better results.
Suggesting to use a water-bottle (good luck fitting your iPhone in that) as a waterproof case when you can get an actual waterproof case for cheaper that will work even better, is just asinine.
I have a case exactly like the one I posted. I go to Ginnie Springs on the Sante Fe river in Florida a lot and go camping (and drinking). This case has been completely submerged in the water, left in the rain over night, had beer spilled on it, been left floating in the water over night, yet it always kept my things perfectly dry.
Do yourself a favor, don't use a fucking water bottle as a waterproof case.
I separated them into their own storage containers.
Each one of the small ones (left storage unit) is separated by resistance, capacitance, LED type and color; the small things. In the right storage unit, I keep my Arduinos (Uno R3s, Megas, Mini, Pro Mini), Raspberry Pi (2, 2B), power cables, 9v battery caps, LCD modules; the bigger things.
I took that picture on February 13, 2017, after mounting the board to my wall. I'm going to have pinout sheets for the different Arduino boards I have, along with a resistor color sheet, for reference. I'm sure I'll find other useful datasheets to pin up, but for now, that's all I need to get started.
When I first started with my own electronics (not high school or college property), circa June 2001, I put things in a small/medium-sized tackle box. It wasn't until February 12, 2014 that I upgraded to the Flambeau 7-tray tackle box. It's got a great bottom compartment for storing wire spools, wire stripper/cutter tool, multimeter, soldering iron, etc. If you're not going to get too involved (uh-huh, I'm sure we've all said that at some point), just plan on something with a bit more space than you need now, for when a little something comes your way, and you want to store it together with your current components.
Wow great idea, I didn't realise tackle boxes were perfect for this. Here's a cheap one for UK folks: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Storage-Adjustable-Compartment-Box-Lunar/dp/B00RVFR58C/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1466155544&sr=8-5&keywords=tackle+box
I carry all the tokens included in 2 core sets in one of these Plano boxes. It's not the most efficient use, but I LOVE having the dividers, it makes play so much more convenient.
I use this plastic tackle box with adjustable dividers for a similar purpose:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E39T5K
It does make it much easier to setup and tear down. It requires more storage space of course, but worth it. Great for Le Havre and Agricola.
I use a different Plano box to carry around my stuff, a shallower version of this -- https://www.amazon.com/Frabill-Plano-Waterproof-Stowaway-Utility/dp/B00FPQRHV4/ref=pd_sim_200_24?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8KRHEGYJ4GPF3AN6PGPA
Obviously that doesn't allow for Epic ships, but I have 10 fighters from two factions, all the accouterments, and a couple slots to spare. It's secure, fits nicely in the bag I carry around, and in the size that I have gives a snug fit to the ships so they don't bounce around too much, without being tight so as it puts pressure on them.
Hi, yeah of course, I ordered this one and it is great!!
[amazon](Storage Carry Case With 4 Adjustable Compartment Storage Boxes, Fishing Tackle Box, Lunar Box ® https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00RVFR58C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_zDHFybK0TQA8D)
I own a tackle box like this (I got got mine ~16 years ago):
https://www.amazon.com/Plano-758-4-Drawer-Tackle-Box/dp/B000E39T28?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_6
Perhaps that would fill your needs? I remove the bottom 2 drawers to allow room for books/papers and one of the fliers I own (Valkyrie) The top stores 4 LR, Basilisk and Ogryn. The top (lid compartment) has all my dice, tokens, and glass beads. But I suppose you could also remove all 4 trays and use the bottom for transporting the really big stuff and store the smaller models in the upper compartment.
I use:
http://www.amazon.com/PLANO-Tackle-Systems-Hybrid-White/dp/B00OY9JS7Y/ref=sr_1_12?s=hunting-fishing&ie=UTF8&qid=1450812604&sr=1-12&keywords=tackle+box&refinements=p_36%3A1253556011
It works great to keep all the tokens in the top portion, the cards in the bottom (in the same type of tackle box inserts that you already have) and then I keep all of my ships in the same plastic enclosures that they come in placed inside a large Rubbermaid container.
I got my first fly rod off amazon for $30 and it works great believe it or not. I'll try and find the link in my history.
Edit: http://www.amazon.com/Martin-Fly-Fishing-Reel-3-Piece/dp/B0012OSVM2/ref=sr_1_4?s=hunting-fishing&ie=UTF8&qid=1464963538&sr=1-4&keywords=fly+rod
I'm using a tackle box like this one It has four drawers for boards and a large space at the top for larger items like LCD screens, Pis and power supply bricks.
I keep the items in either anti-static bags or on anti-static foam.
interesting! me and my buddy just bought fly rods for the exact same purpose. I live within a stones through of Rocky River.

I dont have waders yet so I am guessing I cannot get the casts I need anyhow. Ive been throwing around my yard a bit.

Sad but apparently all our lakes and rivers are super polluted so you really dont want to eat the fish here.

Something you arent used to in alaska I am sure.

I use a large fishing tackle box. Works great and keeps (most) of the smell inside it!

This is the best idea I've seen so far! I just picked up this item, I think it should do the trick:
Frabill Plano Deep Waterproof Stowaway Utility Box

Depending on how many minis you intend to store and tote with you, you can get a larger size. Plano is a great brand for it, though.
I use this great tackle box from amazon
Couple pics of it in use.
This. Buy one of these every month or so.
They have These double sided Plano Tackle boxes at Walmart for like $15. You can fit two to three bags of the above Chessex in one of these tackle boxes.
Bam. Metric FUCKTON of dice.
Thanks, stopped at the store and picked up the gas can. I was looking at the Plano boxes, how do you like it?
Most of my suggestions are from other Reddit posts on here or BGG.
Do yourself a favor and buy an accordion/file folder for the map pieces, ideally with at least 13 pockets for map pieces A-M. That way you do not need to Tetris the pieces back in the box. Saves a lot of time.
I use this Plano box for commonly used small pieces.
And this one for the environment and monster holders.
Smaller monsters will fit in a tray like this one but not the larger mobs (or ones with ten of them), so you would either need to baggy those mobs anyway or cut space in the included foamcore packaging (there are some good examples in other threads).
Also YMMV, but we keep "trashed" cards in a separate ziploc bag rather than actually destroying them.
Edit Note: Using all of the methods described above, I can fit everything from the 1st edition in the box except the file folder.
For smaller games, Plano boxes are considered a really good option by many. You can find cheaper versions in bigbox/craft stores as well, just watch out for the quality of the dividers. Some cheapos just end up falling out.
For bigger games, I've seen a lot of people use rolling suitcases at cons.
I just bought two of these
I've only had them 3 or so days. Similar to the plano you linked. It's kind of thin plastic but fits my cot, tent, extension cord, duct tape, pillow, and blanket in one. Pots, pans, cooking stuff in another.
I'm a little worried about the durability of the weight on the wheels, but the one linked looked like it may be slightly thicker. The one I linked doesn't have an o-ring.
Those action packers are thick sturdy plastic.
I made a post a couple days ago and someone recommended Rubbermaid roughnecks
I've been debating going over to homedepot and getting this 2-pack though. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Sterilite-Footlocker-Storage-Box-2-Pack-18429002/204303284
Crab snare is a must have for nor cal. Great activity when you're soaking some bait. http://www.amazon.com/Danielson-CSNR-Crab-Snare-Small/dp/B002QFY3IM

My favorite storage solution http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FPQRHV4/
I use a fancy Star Wars lunch box to get my stuff around in style. Damage deck, dice, and templates are kept in bags, and I keep my tokens in one of these.
This and this are the closest I could find on amazon.co.uk. I keep shield, focus, evades, target lock, stress, ion, and critical hit tokens in it all the time. Put in other misc tokens (extra munitions, weapons disabled) as needed.
My lunchbox is big enough to fit the five straight template, as well as my range two ruler diagonally inside. That just leaves my range 1-3 ruler that I keep next to a book in my backpack.
A bit more research gives me these:
The same dimensions as mine.
A bit larger.
And a tad smaller.
Some of the smaller ships you can place inside the plano box. I wouldn't recommend having them on the pegs in while in the lunchbox as I've had a few snap off the peg. So long as you try to store things so the ships are on the top of everything in whatever way you are storing it, it should be fine. I use Willibald's boxes for the more fragile ships that don't fit in the plano (like X-wings and their frail little guns).
I've only every carried 100 pt lists in it, but unless you have several large ships, it should still fit everything ok.
I use an ancient (like 25 year old) version of this Plano 2 sided tackle box for my infantry:
http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Double-Sided-Tackle-Box/dp/B000E3C3JO/ref=sr_1_3?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1312381449&sr=1-3
Mine has inserts for dividing up the rows into small portions that are just right for a model laying down flat. I use the old foam from blister packs to cushion them.
I also use a Sabol Motor Pool for my tanks, which I love to death. It was a christmas gift from my wife.
Personally, I use this monster that I got from Amazon. I race almost every week so I needed something that could hold all my tools, parts, fasteners, tires and all that stuff and be easily portable to and from the track. It has tons of space and lots of little organizers and drawers to keep things separated. They make smaller versions of the same thing and ones with fewer drawers. I actually am only using 3 of the 4 pull-out drawers right now anyway.
Same idea. using 3 of these Plano 68 quart boxes in the back of a 4Runner.

They are somewhat stackable too and made a good platform for a camping stove last time I was out.
I got a pack of these. They're a good value and small enough to fit in just about any game box. Only complaint is that they have one shallow compartment at the front and don't include enough dividers for every space, but it hasn't actually been an issue yet.
Sorry, I was thinking of a different box. I was thinking of this.
This is what I use, and I love it. You can get it for $40 at Wal-Mart. I'm actually going to be posting my storage setup tonight. I don't know if it actually gets you too much more space than what you have though. The one other piece of advice I do have is to not be afraid to cut some plastic.
We have a trunk that's filled with emergency supplies/food/our hammocks/maps. We keep it chained & locked to the jeep. We can also sleep in the back when we go camping, which is awesome. We also plan to have kids so the JKU just made more sense.
One of these. I started buying them because I can fit multiple in my waist pack and I can just toss flies in without sliding them into individual slits. They don't work well for larger flies, or bushy dry flies, though.

This is what I use. I put my spools of wire and my pliers and such in the top section of the box. The bottom drawers I use to store my stones and finished pieces.

That is the one I bought. Its not super sturdy but it gets the job done. Has great little out croppings below the side clasps, and I just use straps on either side to tie down to the tie points in the back, so I can still open when its tied down. If someone were determined they could take it, but the trunk is heavy and it would take some effort/time to get it out. I mostly keep water, food and emergency gear in it, so if someone stole it, it would suck, but would not be a huge loss.
I travel with them in a waterproof (and coincidentally airtight) hard-plastic box I got many years ago. Basically similar to this.
I know its airtight because shortly after I got it, I came back from a job in mexico city and couldn't get it open to get my contact lens stuff out until the air seeped in about 2 days later.. stupid pressure changes.
I didn't have any leaks on a recent trip to the beach (4 hr flight), but I still had them in individual bags just to be safe.
(Edit to clarify: they were in small ziplocks, inside that box, in checked baggage.)
Gear box. Holds about 50ish vials and maybe 50 syringes on top. Or all your orals.
I like that one a lot, actually. I like the two-layer feature there. Handy. I've been using a larger (too large for this) Plano box that I had lying around for Heroclix but I want to replace it. I guess I'm just planning on holding out for the official setup box for now.
If you meant the tacklebox, here it is on Amazon.
Tackle box! I use this one.
I used 3 of these small 6 compartment Plano boxes I picked up at Walmart for just a couple bucks.
One each for USA and USSR influence (I pit 6,7,8 together) and one for dice and misc tokens.
Tokens and Dials i keep in Plano 3700 storage boxes that come in various layouts. I also store my ships in these.
Cards i keep in card pages in 3 ring binders.
I got a 4-By Rack System for Christmas, I use it for this exact purpose.
the box
I went to Walmart and bought something similar to this!
This, along with a label gun if you're really looking to organize. I have a big tacklebox, with a fliptop lid for the big minis (Hee hee, oxymoron!) and then it has 4 trays with individual lines
Kinda like this
