Looking for a household mixers guide? We got you covered

Regardless of what anyone says, in today's world, with many options available on household mixers, choosing the best one that fulfills your various purposes may be confusing. Household mixers are essentials that everyone must have in their kitchen, but what should you consider before buying one?

This article, we help you choose the best one that does your bidding.

The difference between a standing mixer and a hand mixer?

Simple, you should get a standing mixer if you do heavy-duty mix daily. The standing mixer has a mighty motor, and it's priced higher than the hand mixer. Most people consider it an investment since it does quite the job at mixing but is priced higher than your regular mixers.

On the other hand, hand mixers are compact and do the job well if you are mixing thinner and softer batters. You can get a good evenly mix on everything since you can move it around with your hand, but as we've mentioned, it doesn't have a very powerful motor, so you're good to go only if your various daily tasks involve light mixing.

What are some factors you should consider before buying one?

The price range for your cooking needs

We understand, and it is okay to want the best of the best but do take some time and consider what you need the mixer for. Most hand mixers come below a hundred bucks, and they can easily mix anything if light-duty, like, whipping cream and mashing potatoes.

While on the other hand, standing mixers can go up to a thousand bucks, but you only need that mixing if you're feeding a large number of people. Most home chefs use the $300 range models since they do the job efficiently enough.

Consider the weight, size, and features it comes with

When it comes to weight, the lighter and more comfortable it is to hold should be considered when buying a hand mixer, and the more good and sturdy it is, the better the standing mixer.

You should also consider the size of your kitchen. Make sure you have enough space to fit in the mixer you've always wanted.

Wrapping up

Choosing the right mixer might not be rocket science, but it is always better to seek advice. Hope this guide helps.

Awh, that sounds like a good night, at least. I mean, at least you weren't stressed out or running around and you were able to relax together, albeit doing different things. My boyfriend and I usually have our respective Me time as we mostly stay in and hangout with each other. We're both pretty broke right now, too, so until I get a job we won't be doing too much of anything. I LOVE to bake, and he loves to eat my baked goods, so I would definitely want to bake something for him! Perhaps some tasty mini filled cakes that are root beer float themed-root beer flavored cakes with a creamy vanilla filling. (He has requested that flavor combination to be included in one of my next creations.) Or I could make some mini ice cream sandwiches! Ahhh they're SO cute! These ones are adorable, too! Vanilla cookies with orange cream ice cream, because we just found a half pint ice cream maker at the thrift store (still in the box sealed, $7!!) and I want to use it for something adorable. Of course, if I were baking I would need an oven mitt so I didn't burn myself =P My favorite mitt got a hole right between the thumb and the rest of the mitt. Fail. Let's be honest, this freaking mixer would make my LIFE, not just my night, but that will just have to wait until I win the lottery or something. ;P

After baking, we could both lounge around and I would make some cool crafts. I have been wanting to make coasters using these dyes and/or these dyes or these ones and alcohol on some ceramic tiles. Look! How freaking awesome, right?! Cool times. (How old are your kiddos? These would be SO much fun to make with kids!! Have them sign their names in sharpies with the date!) Plus then our wood coffee table won't be ruined. So, you know, that would be good. While I'm crafting he would certainly be playing some video games. He has been lusting over Dead Space 3 FOREVER. (So, if I happen to win and it is within the budget, that is the top item for me, because I know how happy he would be to have it and I can't afford to get it for him right meow.)

While waiting for the crafts to dry I would play with my kitties. This toy is awesome looking. Once the kitties were all tuckered out, I would seal the tiles and then I would absolutely want to paint my nails. Boyfriend would still be playing video games so I would sit next to him on the couch and paint nails and watch him own. He's so good at shooting games, I love watching him play! I'm sure he would be eating some of the fresh bakery, too =) I would paint them this most amazing green color EVAR with some glitter on top. Then, because I don't know when to stop with anything having to do with my nails, would add these super freaking cool studs to them!

After all that I would be pretty tired, so I would just lounge around on the couch waiting for my nails to dry while he inevitably still played his game. lol. Yes, this would be perfect me time and him time and us time and just a perfect night in! This is a really cool contest idea! <3

>Meat Grinder and whole cuts of meat vs. Buying pre-ground meats. I do own a good food processor so if that works as well, I would love to hear experiences.

Pre-ground is almost always going to be cheaper. You sacrifice quality but if you're looking to save money then pre-ground is probably going to be your best bet.

>Homemade pasta with pasta roller vs. buying boxed pasta. (yes, homemade tastes better. But is the roller worth the investment for someone who may eat pasta 3x a month?)

Boxed all the way. Making your own pasta is relatively easy but it's expensive time-wise and the cost doesn't begin to justify itself when you're talking about buying a pasta roller, something that really can only do one thing in your kitchen. Doubly so if you're a "pasta 3 times a month" person.

>Infrared Laser Thermometer vs...well, nothing. I just want to know if they are worth the investment.

I would lean towards the "skip it" category on this; IR thermometers only tell you the surface temperature of food (which isn't helpful with things like meat, pies, etc where you need to know the internal temperature). If you really need a thermometer, probe thermometers are inexpensive just make sure you calibrate it regularly.

I've cooked for a good number of years and have yet to have a strong need for a thermometer.

>Stand mixer vs. electric hand mixer.

How often do you need/use it and what do you use it for? If you find yourself needing a mixer often, a stand mixer is a good investment. The oldschool KitchenAids are absolute tanks (they will, if cared for properly, outlive your great grandchildren) and are considered the gold standard for stand mixers but they are also upwards of $300. If you use a stand mixer regularly, it's worth the investment. I have heard (don't quote me, check with someone who uses these more regularly) that if you do go the KitchenAid route to get one that's a bit older. The very newest ones aren't built to quite the same spec as they were maybe ten to fifteen years ago and the quality took a bit of a dip.

KitchenAids also have a lot of peripherals you can get for virtually any job in the kitchen so you don't have to have twenty different machines.

If you don't need a mixer that often, an electric hand mixer will work just fine.

>Silicone bakeware or mats vs. regular non-stick baking pans.

I would probably go with regular baking pans. Silicone is nice but I've never really found it to be a necessity. If you use baking pans a lot, I would actually recommend going for something called a "sheet pan." They're available at any restaurant supply store or online. They're a bit more expensive but they're very durable and better suited for the task than straight up baking sheets. Add a roll of parchment paper and you're set.

---

One thing I would recommend is possibly a "time share" set up with friends if you want something big but won't necessarily use it all the time. Get a couple of friends together and all go in for something big, sharing it around as you need it. That way you get to use the device but don't necessarily have to shoulder the cost of the whole thing if you only want it once or twice a month.

I truly, truly think that with the approaching cold weather you absolutely MUST have this. Plus I have the same one on my wishlist!

Think of all the homemade goodies you could make! Delightful dough, buttery biscuits, perfect pie! I've always wanted a KitchenAid mixer, ever since I started helping my mom bake when I was a kid. It is just one of those 'hoop dream' items for me. It's so hard to justify spending that much on yourself sometimes, but you should totally do it! Plus that color is amazing!!! I love everything aqua right now. It is so cheery and fun.

If I could pick anything in the world off my WL right now for MYSELF, I would pick the copper mule mugs (on my $10-$20 list). I've always enjoyed having moscow mules, but would love to do them properly when we have guests over. It just seems like such a fun drink. Sit outside on the patio, watching the sunset, drinking an awesome drink out of an awesome mug! Refreshing! :)

Thanks so much for the contest and go 'head and treat yo self!

Kitchen Equipment used.

I used a lot of foodsaver bags for the sole reason I was spending a lot of time and money and didn’t want to risk freezer burn because I was prepping so far in advanced. Food storage first – not including things like Ziploc freezer bags, foil, parchment… and then kitchen equipment:

Foodsaver V4400 2-in-1 Vacuum Sealer Machine with Automatic Bag Detection and Starter Kit | Safety Certified | Black & Silver : Mine is like 9 years old… I don’t know if I would recommend this one exactly had I bought again. I works good.. but the auto bag detection can be finicky… YMMV

https://www.amazon.com/FoodSaver-V4440-Automatic-Detection-Certified/dp/B00DI342B4/ref=sxin_3_osp64-9923e9b1_cov?ascsubtag=9923e9b1-6183-477e-aa56-8a4dfc4129ac&creativeASIN=B00DI342B4&cv_ct_id=amzn1.osp.9923e9b1-6183-477e-aa56-8a4dfc4129ac&cv_ct_pg=search&cv_ct_wn=osp-search&keywords=food+saver&linkCode=oas&pd_rd_i=B00DI342B4&pd_rd_r=88594738-3101-4d09-bd53-96278ca4d2e7&pd_rd_w=UhZe4&pd_rd_wg=ac2zF&pf_rd_p=a23a388c-add5-49df-b293-a31ade89c6bf&pf_rd_r=3YDACSK6QW44JXQA1GTP&qid=1573057908&tag=fsmag_os-20

FoodSaver B005SIQKR6 Special Value Vacuum Seal Combo Pack 1-8" 4-11" Rolls 36 Pre-Cut Bags, 1Pack, Clear : 1st : I bought at Costco when there was $10 off savings. I know the meal prep community can recommend off brand ones. The premade bags are a time saver so I in the future I would only by those in bulk and keep the rolls for random sized things. I know I know, one time use… but I do wash the bags if I can get a second use out of them / depends what I stored in there / do not use for sous vide

Cuisinart DFP-14BCNY 14-Cup Food Processor, Brushed Stainless Steel – Silver : I think mine is only the 11 cup size…I have had it mine for.. oh 15 years? Maybe longer? and FYI: NOTE: Cuisinart has announced a recall of the older riveted S-blade of our winning food processor, which was included in models sold from 1996 through December 2015. Cuisinart will replace the blade free of charge, and the new blade will fit old machines. Anyone with this older blade should contact Cuisinart at https://recall.cuisinart.com (or call 1-877-339-2534).

KitchenAid KSM75SL Classic Plus 4.5-Qt. Tilt-Head Stand Mixer, Silver : I won’t get into the long story.. but I’m using my OLD (I got for my 16th birthday, so this bad boy has lasted over 16 years!!) Kitchen Aid 4.5 qt tilt head mixer….

Le Creuset Signature Enameled Cast-Iron 7-1/4-Quart Round French (Dutch) Oven, Caribbean : If you live near a Le Creuset outlet.. check there… I got this model (in like an eggplant color) for $180 and there were 0 flaws… It made me wonder why I waited 15 years to get one!

Cuisinart WAF-F20 Double Belgian Waffle Maker, Stainless Steel : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IA3HJGG/?tag=ccoequippilot-20

Zojirushi NS-TSC10 5-1/2-Cup (Uncooked) Micom Rice Cooker and Warmer, 1.0-Liter : Mine is 10 years old—so it doesn’t look exactly like this. I won’t be prepping any rice because this is so easy to make:

https://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NS-TSC10-Uncooked-Cooker-1-0-Liter/dp/B0074CDG6C/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3GWEIFTDW8TUQ&keywords=zuroshi+rice+cooker&qid=1573064673&sprefix=zuroshi%2Caps%2C162&sr=8-3

The rest of the equipment is either old, I don’t like it, or I am preparing to replace with much higher quality. I’m also planning to add an instant pot come black Friday/ Cyber Monday.

That's great to hear. Scale instead of volume is 100% the way to go. If you are interested in picking up a stand mixer, the Kitchenaid is the obvious choice, and for good reason. I would go with the professional 5 model, and I would shop around on amazon, including with the color. I got this one because it was the cheapest one based on color. The professional series has a stronger motor and can handle a tough load (like dough) much better than the artisan mixer. If you do want to buy it and color doesn't matter to you, definitely click through the different colors because the color alone can affect the price, something to the tune of several hundred dollars in variance, which is crazy to me (for instance, right now, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive based solely on color is $160).

As an aside, I have a brother who is on the high functioning autism scale, so I have some experience dealing with some of the unique inherent challenges. If you ever want to shoot me a PM to take advantage of my experience working in high end kitchens, or just a general message, PLEASE feel free to do so. I already help a few people with cooking problems and love doing so. I would be more than happy to help you however I can.

Good luck to you and your son on his journey towards learning how to bake and cook(hopefully).

p.s. If your son loves the technical aspect of it, I would highly recommend the cooking issues podcast. While they don't discuss baking so much, the host was the technical director for the French Culinary Institute in New York for many years, so he has a very analytical approach to food, cooking, and cocktails (he owns a very well renowed bar). It's a great podcast/radio show, and I listen to it all the time. As far as other very technical resources go, I would very very very highly recommend Harold McGee's book, On Food and Cooking. It is a seminal work that deals with the how and why of everything to do with food. It is easily in the top 5 most important books on cooking and food written in the 20th century.

That's a great deal, but I found you a better one, especially if you have Amazon Prime. https://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KP26M1XNP-Professional-Bowl-Lift-Stand/dp/B0002Y5X9W

OMG I wish the 11-wire whip and the flex edge paddle were that cheap when I bought mine. I pd regular price :(

I did these links quickly, so double check that the accessories are the correct ones for the model number. The reason upgrading these is great is that both of these are dishwasher safe and the ones that come with the mixer are not, plus, if she bakes a lot more, having extra parts comes in handy. This will make your mom soooooo happy!!

Edit: To go along with them being DW safe, both accessories are mountains better than the ones that come with the mixer. More wires means more air, and flex edge means less scraping the bowl. :)

I cannot tell you how often I use my mixer It is the most useful thing in my kitchen, save for my ninja Both are great items to have if you do a lot of cooking. The ninja is good if you give any raw foods to your pets (I give my dog chicken, carrots, and celery often) to get them to a good bite size. They both work great for chicken and egg salad. Save your fingers from smelling like garlic with the ninja, make a delicious cake with the mixer... The list goes on. Obviously I love food... So, yea. haha.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/Cooking

It really depends on what she wants to do with it. If she isn't really interested in attachments, then it doesn't have to be a Kitchenaid. Honestly, I think all the Kitchenaid mixers smaller than the Pro line are woefully underpowered and a waste of money for most people.

The Hamilton Beach Eclectrics line are comparable in performance except for the attachment hub. They're also all metal, which Kitchenaid used to be back when they were actually worth the amount you pay for them. Now Kitchenaids are full of plastic parts, and the Hamilton Beach costs half as much.

There's also a less powerful, but still pretty darn good Hamilton Beach stand mixer for around $100.

For under $50, your best bet is going to be a hand mixer that also has a stand. These will be the more classic double beater design as opposed to the more efficient planetary action you get on the higher end mixers, but certainly usable as long as she's not making huge batches of anything and understands the limits of the mixer's capabilities. There are several available on Amazon, this Sunbeam is similar to the one my mom had for many years.

The conventional wisdom may be that it's a Kitchenaid or nothing but I don't buy it. My mom has never owned a Kitchenaid in her life, and has never had a problem making whatever she wanted with her old fashioned Sunbeam double beater model with the spinning glass bowl. A smaller, lower end mixer will mean she can't make double and triple batches of most things, and some tasks will take longer, but that doesn't mean cheaper mixers are useless.

I understand that I can easily trust a kitchenaid. I also understand that their marketing team takes advantage of this, and you pay for the name. For instance, compare these two mixers

Top rated kitchenaid on amazon here

vs a similar hamilton beach model here

The specs are very similar. It has the features I want, like an orbital mixing attachment, the attachments I need and a head that swivels away from the bowl. Is the >$100 price difference all in the name? Compatibility with support or a large range of potential attachments? Something I'm not seeing?

If you have any tips for specific specs I should look for, like wattage for the motor then please let me know. Beyond the basic features that I'm looking for I'm pretty much in the dark here.

You two, /u/186394 and /u/rasta2645 are looking quite fffiiiinnneeee today! And thank you for the contest!

My dream item at the moment is this KitchenAid mixer. And honestly, it doesn't have to be that exact one. I've always wanted a stand mixer ever since I got into baking. I watch cooking shows or Good Eats and just get jealous of their stand mixer! Why can't they be more affordable! I'm also getting married next year and we are being very do-it-yourself. Instead of a wedding cake, I want cupcakes!! And I want to make them all myself. This stand mixer will be of so much help!!

u/CityBarman · 9 pointsr/Tiki

What do you think about stirring instead of shaking? Unless you're manning a stick at a Tiki bar, make your drinks the way you like. If you're happy simply stirring, than have at it. That being said, I would never think of not shaking/blending Tiki cocktails. Aeration is an actual component of the cocktail. Besides, syrups, liqueurs and fruit juices/purees don't combine all that easily, especially when cold/iced. Shaking/blending speeds the process greatly.

So you haven't found a shaker you like. OK. I Assume you haven't sprung $40 for a spindle blender. (Hamilton Beach 730C Classic DrinkMaster - Amazon) Fine. How about $12.19 for a hand/immersion blender? Proctor-Silex 59738 Hand Blender - Amazon Tiki cocktails take more thought, effort, tools and ingredients than your typical cocktails. That's why TGIChillibees don't do Tiki. It's also why those who do good Tiki are greatly respected.

America's Test Kitchen (very reliable imo) highly recommends both the Kitchenaid Pro 600 AND the Cuisinart 5.5 Qt Stand Mixer. The difference is that the Pro is $400 and the Cuisinart is $300, but both are wonderful; I'm not sure about attachments for the Cuisinart though, which is one reason I'd buy the Kitchenaid over the Cuisinart despite the cost difference.

If you aren't going to make a lot of super heavy duty foods like bread though though, I suggest a Kitchenaid Classic; it's $230 on Amazon; I remember getting mine at only $200 at the store. The Classic gets shaky and shuddery and grindy with heavy duty doughs and mixes, which always frightens me but egg whites and batters and such it can definitely handle, and you save money.

I haven't the resources to try out a ton of mixers, but I think the Kitchenaid mixer is one of the most reliable in the industry, especially amongst home cooks. They're sturdy, simple, and easy to use.

u/satarius · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Oh. Hey. I can add something here-

The commercial ones are great, but expensive, and like someone mentioned here, the Kitchenaids just aren't what they used to be.

I present to you, a decent option at ~$250. The Cuisinart SM-55. It's got a lot of nice features (timer!), can do some extra useful things like more expensive ones (meat grinder!), and is pretty durable.

Happy with mine, no complaints.

I see a kitchenaid one on sale for $35 on amazon:

kitchenaid

Otherwise, if you're looking for something cheaper, it may not hold up as long or be as good quality, but unless you're using it extremely frequently, a cheap hand mixer like black+decker would work just fine as well and you can get it for $14 on amazon:

black+decker

I bake a lot and tend to be cheap when it comes to hand mixers, and even cheap $15 mixers have lasted at least a few years each for me.

u/jmp242 · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Many of the reports online, specifically Amazon reviews and the old Yahoo Mixer-Owners lists of them breaking under any sort of load. Especially any bread dough, or some of the attachments.

I kind of feel like if you aren't going to use a meat grinder, or make bread dough, then why pay KitchenAid prices? You can probably do fine making cakes and batters with a handheld mixer for $30 or a SunBeam stand mixer for $90 or so (https://www.amazon.com/Sunbeam-2371-MixMaster-Stand-Mixer/dp/B000COC69C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510456961&sr=8-1&keywords=sunbeam+stand+mixer) . My mom sure did for years and years.

Now, for $200 you are at the extreme low end price for a lower end KitchenAid (the 500 series). But you can step up IMO to a much better mixer for that money - the Bosch Compact ( https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-MUM4405-Compact-Tilt-Head-Pouring/dp/B0001NNLH0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1510457026&sr=8-3&keywords=Bosch+Compact ).

The reason I think they're better is again the reviews, but also a couple key differences. You've got a reputation for handling heavier tasks without issues and current generation is still known for lasting a long time. The spash guard is better designed IMO because it fully covers the bowl, so you don't "pouf" flour out when you start it up. It's lighter and easier to put away when not in use to clear counter space.

I think KitchenAid mixers look real nice, but I don't think they make any sense financially unless you're buying it as set dressing (i.e. for looks only).

u/mustardketchupmayo · 1 pointr/Austin

Buy bananas. Ones you don't eat stick in the freezer unpeeled. The skins will turn black which doesn't hurt the actual banana. When you get a few make banana bread. It's super easy. Only special tool you need is an electric hand mixer. Cheapest I found on Amazon and probably the last one you will ever buy if you hold on to things. Had mine for twenty years.

https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-Lightweight-Mixer-MX1500W/dp/B000FIOU76/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?keywords=electric+hand+mixer&qid=1567461231&s=gateway&sprefix=electric+ha&sr=8-8

Edit: you will need a bread/meatloaf loaf pan. Pyrex is best. You can get those cheap also. The things pay for themselves. Next week tune in for my 5 minute hummus.

u/rabbithasacat · 2 pointsr/Cooking

They make bigger ones, but yeah 5 qt is fine assuming yours is bread-capable. If you can spring for a bowl-lift model instead of a tilt-head (or wait for it to go on sale), that's better for heavy breadmaking, but I had to go to a 6-qt for that. Which, I love mine and have no regrets, and I love being able to make a double batch of bread dough at once, but maybe that's a bigger purchase than you were planning. Currently mine is $329 on Amazon. They do go on sale sometimes and also can be a bargain at Costco.

I don't want to try to dictate to you what you need, everybody's mileage varies. Just advising that bread dough isn't "entry-level" mixing work and a bargain-basement mixer probably won't cut it if bread is going to be part of what you regularly use it for. Everybody has to find a balance between overspending in the first place, and having to quickly replace a product that was never up to the job and breaks down under pressure.

That little Sunbeam looks fine for making a cake. I don't know whether it would be fine for bread too, or if it would choke. Sorry, I've just never used that brand so I don't know what to expect.

u/obscurityknocks · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I got rid of my fancy looking Kitchen Aid and got a Cuisinart SM55 mixer. I've had it for six years, made bread, pizza dough, cakes, etc and never had one problem with it other than it is quite loud.

There is a heavy duty mixer that costs more, but I'm happy with the one I have. It came with good attachments and a splash guard. Very easy to use.

u/AwkwardBurritoChick · 14 pointsr/Cooking

I was wondering why you used a processor too so I looked up the recipes as every Kenji recipe I've made has been spot on.

The recipe says clearly "To make without a stand mixer," and "Combine flour, salt, yeast, and 2 tablespoons olive oil in bowl of stand mixer (see note for mixer-free version)." It didn't say to use a food processor, but to use a stand mixer and with the whisk attachment or to whisk dry then use the dough (naturally) once adding wet.

[This is a stand mixer] (https://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KSM150PSER-Artisan-Tilt-Head-Pouring/dp/B00005UP2P/ref=sr_1_4?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1472785644&sr=1-4&keywords=stand+mixer)

Where basically the bowl is removable and the mixer is fixed and you use the dough blade for it.

With that, the recipe also provides non-stand mixer alternative using a wooden spoon or which as another comment stated, use your hands in a bowl.

So while you may want to replace your food processor, it won't work on a new one since you're using the wrong equipment as you seem to have confused a stand mixer with a food processor. A stand mixer is a mixer, as you would use for batters, dough, meringues...a processor blends, chops, shreds. Totally different uses for these tools and usually interchangeable. You can't use a mixer (Stand or hand held) to chop vegetables and food processors can't really make batters or doughs (some exceptions, but again, there is a dough blade and for more generic type wet doughs like making brazilian cheesy bread).

Edit to add: Please see the description you provided in the Amazon food processor to support my advice: Faster than cutting by hand, Fast & versatile - quickly chop onions, slice salad ingredients, shred cabbage, grate cheese, mix sauces, or prepare pestoFast & versatile - quickly chop onions, slice salad ingredients, shred cabbage, grate cheese, mix sauces, or prepare pesto

Note it doesn't say "Mix thick bread and pizza dough"

u/YellowSharkMT · 2 pointsr/AskCulinary

Gotcha. Having made my fair share of hand-dipped shakes in a restaurant setting, I think the crucial component you're missing is a proper milkshake blender, which can be used to work through the entire column of ice cream, breaking it down and mixing it evenly with the milk that you add.

Here's a $33 consumer model that doesn't look too bad. At the job I mentioned, we used one like this: a 3-spindle 1/3HP mofo, which costs about $800-$1,000.

Back to the regular blender: you'll have to manually force the ice cream down to the mixing blades, which is tedious - mix, stir, mix, stir, and so on. However, tempering the ice cream beforehand can help; just put it in the fridge for a couple hours to bring the temp up, but without melting it too much - you'll have to watch it carefully to catch it at the right time. You won't want to use any extra milk in this case.

As for the other suggestions: malt powder has a particular flavor that some folks may or may not like. Adding raw egg sounds crazy. Xanthum gum is legit, but just feels unnecessary, given my own experience with just the machine and some quality ice cream. (We used Wilcoxson's, a regional brand here in Montana.)

Hope that helps! Better equipment is what you need, I think. :)

u/coberst · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

oh my Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds....My most expensive item on my list is this Kitchen Aid mixer. I would love this because I am trying to make more food from scratch including pasta, sausage, ground meats, breads, etc. We are trying to move away from processed foods. I would be ok with never receiving this item because it a convenience item...just a really helpful one. :)

you're awesome.

u/TurloIsOK · 1 pointr/AskCulinary

The small hand mixer copied the hand cranked "egg beater" design. The meshing blades compensate for low torque and help move product through the bowl.

Large stand mixers compare better to hand tools. The implement (whisk, dough hook or paddle) moves around the bowl much more like one uses equivalent manual tools.

u/Esperiel · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

(OT) As a person who loves kitchen gear and appliances I like the way you think... but FYI, you may want to also take a glance at a Hobart($thousand(s)+) stand mixer in lieu of the (albeit gorgeous) Kitchenaid (can't handle indefinite high load back to back batches) in your example. The (entry) Hobart could be more likely to be in that well reviewed high end French restaurant above =) --or they could use Kitchenaids(or equivalent) for light loads and Hobart for heavier duties.

The Sweethome reviewed a few models and recommended the Kitchenaid Artisan 5-quart mixer. It's a pretty thorough review, worth the read. I second the local restaurant supply store for refurbished/second hand equipment. Costco sometimes runs good promos on kitchen equipment as well.

just a simple link here but you can see in the description it says steel (not cast iron. whoops) and also the discussion in the reviews about the switch (2nd one mentions it). This is the most expensive thing on my wishlist. I am finally following my dream of starting a little bakery business out of my home. I'm taking the Wilton decorating courses this fall.

Baking dozens of cookies and making old-fashioned fudge is much more probable when I have more than an old hand-mixer that smokes and smells like burning plastic when I use it to mix thick cookie dough.

Would I be okay with never having this item in my life? I can't really say, I mean baking is very possible without the mixer but... have you ever heard of a baker without a stand mixer?!

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is a beautiful song!

Same 5-qt capacity as the Artisan at a similar price but with a way more powerful motor and the bowl lift instead of tilt head.

Honestly, I've had success with household appliances. My GF loves the mixer I got her. I get cookies out of the deal, too :)

this instant pot is something I've been eyeing for a few months. I don't really NEED it, as I can just cook on the stove or oven easily , but I've heard they're really handy.

I've also been eyeing a kitchenaid stand mixer for years. I doubt I'll ever get it, but it would really be useful in all the frequent baking that I do. But hand mixers work too.... so not really a need lol.

That gif is... interesting.

u/wambolicious · 1 pointr/food

Kitchen Aid stand mixer. I have this baby in red and I LOVE it. It's certainly pricey, but it's worth every penny. You can buy all sorts of attachments (the pasta roller is aaaawesome) and it is a real solid piece of machinery. It can even knead bread doughs for you (though some purists may wince at the thought). The hinged 5 quart model is plenty for most people, I think.

Look for a sale at department stores, that's how I got mine.

So, I painted my KitchenAid. Gasps! Yes, yes, I know, but I did it! I had this one. I've wanted the ice blue color for about a year, but ya' know, $300 isn't easy to come by, and if I did have it, I'd have more important things to spend it on... like bills, lol. Anyway, we taped off the important parts and painted it a similar color. I was terrified the entire time, but I think it came out great! :) Here's another shot! It's not perfect, but I definitely prefer it to the red we had before.

Hobart is the king of countertop mixers, but as you can see, not exactly frugal. Kitchenaid was purchased by Whirlpool and the quality took a steep decline. That being said, you could buy 10 Kitchenaids for that price, so up to you. I have one of the pro series with the bowl-lift things which I like. I just checked; Kitchenaid only has a 1 year warranty. Nice.

Take a look at this earlier BIFL discussion.

I have two items in my kitchen that I cant live without. My kitchenaide stand mixer which I use my meat grinder attachment for all the time and love baking cookies in it. Some girl I met got it for Christmas and said she hated it because it was the wrong shade of pink. So she sold it to me basically new for 100 dollars!!!!!!

The other item is my ninja! Never have to cut veggies again or stir up scrambled eggs. Also perfect for fresh fruit smoothies. These two items make my life healthier and better!!!!!

Let's do it in the kitchen.

They did not have Lego Technic when I was a kid. Lego was very limited (if you can imagine that).

With her cooperation, I took apart my mother's stand mixer when I was a kid. Similar to this model but made in the 1950s http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KSM150PSER-Artisan-Series-5-Quart/dp/B00005UP2P/ref=sr_1_3?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1382451926&sr=1-3 It was old style 'Made in the USA' built like a tank and it was designed for dis-assembly and repair. It was very interesting.

Turning the heavy old mixer over to her budding engineer to dismantle was one of my mom's responses to Women's Liberation. Her mixer probably weighed 25 lbs and she was tired of lugging it up onto the kitchen counter. She did not expect me to reassemble it. She wanted it to go away, and it would never wear out. She replaced it with a cheap handheld mixer that was a lot easier to handle.

  • Does he have crappy pepper&salt mills? Peugeot makes the best this is 80$ so you can add other stuff too

  • Mortar and pestle are all the same but the material so you can get him a pretty granite one. Just choose an appropriate size. This is not a gadget. This is a base kitchen tool that he will use. I thought it was hipster shit but its very very useful. (if he doesnt already have one)

Back in the day I worked at a high volume lounge that had several egg white drinks on the menu. I had a malt mixer that I used. It saved lots of time, and my shoulder on busy nights.

  1. Build egg white cocktail in large shaker tin.
  2. Put shaker tin on mixer as it was a malt.
  3. Start off on low setting, if no low setting cup hand over open space to keep any splashing to a minimum.
  4. Blend for 7-15 seconds depending on the level of aeration needed
  5. Add ice, shake.
  6. Fine strain to glass.
  7. Enjoy responsibly.

Dont know if I can post links but this is the mixer I used.

u/Schmike108 · 3 pointsr/espresso

Freddo cappuccino or Freddo espresso! They have become mainstream in Greece. You pour a double shot over 4-5 ice cubes and you blend it until it foams significantly (not using the kind of blender that breaks down the ice cubes). It becomes iced espresso that retains its punch, and blending it does something to its texture. If you add cold foam on top it becomes freddo cappuccino.

Here's what I use for blending: Hamilton Beach 730C Classic DrinkMaster Drink Mixer, Chrome https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004X135/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Aqz5CbFPBW1QS

u/bishoujo688 · 3 pointsr/GifRecipes

I have one of these but mine is a 90s model. I inherited it from my mother when I moved out (she upgraded to a newer model and this one still works so it's still seeing use to this day). It gets me soft or stiff peaks when beating egg whites - something I do for waffles :D

Maybe I could go ahead and make a full recipe because, just by myself, I can go through a pint or a quart pretty quickly! I guess I was thinking of all the other times I make things for myself that I don't finish in time. Eggnog seems to be the exception here!

u/Dash-o-Salt · 3 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

It's a lot easier to get the ingredients to combine together properly if you do this, avoiding lumps.

However, after doing quite a bit of baking, I have found that you can certainly be...somewhat lazy, but that requires a heavy duty mixer like this one.

I usually mix all the dry ingredients together in the mixer bowl, then add all of the wet ingredients on top of the dry ingredients and mix everything together.

It's technically better to mix the wet ingredients together separately, but better in my kitchen usually loses to convenient, as I hate having two bowls to clean.

Edit: A typo

Perhaps. When I bought my wife hers I remember reading the exact same kind of stuff people are saying here (some have plastic gears, some have metals gears, old ones are better, the gears will strip, making bread will ruin it, etc) and just took the chance and it seems to have worked out. It's unfortunate that yours did not fare as well.

We bought this one on sale for $219USD, I think we definitely have gotten our moneys worth.

edit: I'll also quickly add my wife only makes two loaves of bread at a time, though I'm not sure anyone could make more than that with this bowl size.

There is normally only one motor, Driving all of the attachment points. If it fails, all of them will fail.

A proper fit is required between the mixing blades and the bowl, and the bowl often fits or locks into the base for stability, so you cannot use any bowl.

At least in the USA, the classic KitchenAid mixer is considered “buy it for life” (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005UP2P)

u/rangda66 · 2 pointsr/Tiki

If you have a blender use that and pulse blend on low ~5 seconds. If you don't have a blender either you can still make it in a cocktail shaker.

The biggest difference between a mixer/blender/shaker is aeration. A blender gets a lot more air into a drink than shaking, and a drink mixer gets even more air into the drink (flash blend a drink with pineapple juice in it and you'll get a beer head). I used to shake tiki drinks all the time before I got the mixer. I had a blender but cleaning it out after use was a pain, and if making drinks for just myself I'd never bother to use it.

Note that if you make it shaken I would use cubed ice rather than crushed and shake for a good 20 seconds given how much coconut cream in in here. Then strain over crushed ice.

If you make tiki drinks with any frequency then I think this Hamilton Beach mixer is well worth the price. It's fine if you are just making drinks for 1-2 a couple of times a week. Frequent parties will probably kill its motor, however.
