  1. Focus on the protest as a community event. The protest is a way you can meet like minded people, and together we can drive change. There isn't anything wrong with going to a protest because "I want to show my opposition to policy X", but if the focus is "We want to show just how many people oppose policy X and return power to the people", then there is a built in implication of bringing a group. That intrinsic idea of power in numbers will (hopefully) subconsciously encourage people to bring friends in a more subtle manner than repeatedly telling them "bring your friends".

  2. Identify measurable goals, and a clear message. Being able to see a result provides an emotional reward and encourages further participation.
  • Ex. 1: Black Friday revenue has gone up every year in the last decade, last year topping $717 Billion. To prove we want change, this year let's strive for at least a 5% decrease, bringing the total under $680 Billion.
  • Ex. 2: We demand Congress set a definite date for an impeachment vote, and stop leaving room to back away from impeachment. (Then if congress doesn't vote on that date, escalate. Force them to be accountable and don't let them back out of the deal.)
  • Ex. 3: We need a promise from the House that there will be no backroom deal with Republicans to allow Trump to resign with dignity. A vote must be held. If we don't publicly hold officials accountable for their abuses of power, they will continue to believe they are above the law, and they will be right.

  1. Provide a "can't-attend-in-person" and/or "low-effort" option for contributing that is more tangible than donating online.
  • Make a protest sign and mail it to your city's organizer.
  • Write and/or record protest songs.
  • Without buying anything, make protest flags from old clothing.

  1. Provide a dead-simple way for people to get involved in the protest in their community. This should include information about the organizers (so people feel more comfortable reaching out to them), multiple contact methods (not everyone uses facebook/reddit/platform-of-choice), a published running tally of how many people plan to participate (peer-pressure is real), and pre-protest communication opportunities (some sort of discussion forum where people can coordinate semi-anonymously). Ideally, hold multiple casual pre-protest meetup/planning sessions in a public location like a park or coffee shop. The focus isn't about the major logistics like permits, but about having an opportunity to meet fellow protestors and plan carpooling, themed signs, etc. Turning up to a major protest can be intimidating, but if you had coffee with other potential attendees in a smaller group the week before, it becomes less scary.

  2. Find a visual gimmick that attracts media-attention. For better or worse, the media pays attention to things that make for good video and dramatic photos, so use that. Create an iconic image that ties together the protests across the country, that looks good on film, and that is memorable. If you search for "iconic protest photos" you see examples like 1960's antiwar protestors giving flowers to armed soldiers, the yellow vests in France, the pink hats from the women's march, people holding up lighters, etc. Ideally, choose something that is easily accessible on any budget, for example "everybody wear a specific color", do something with flagging tape that is under $5 for 300 yards and visually striking in neon colors.

    Edit to add:
For the anti-consumption aspect, offer an alternative activity to shopping. When breaking a habit (like shopping), it can be easier to do something else than to intentionally refrain from doing something (don't think about a pink elephant). Start a social media tag like #BlackFridayUpcycle and encourage people to skip shopping and to instead find a creative reuse for items already in their home and to post a picture online. (This could draw interest from parts of the Pinterest/Maker communities that aren't traditionally interested in politics. Hopefully, others can think of ways to draw the interest of the not-so-political members of their own overlapping communities.

You'll find most if you look for "reflective green tape". Most types have a sort of diamond pattern on the tape. I'm guessing this would do: http://www.amazon.com/TapeCase-3277-Green-Reflective-Tape/dp/B007Y7HWMQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453386782&sr=8-2&keywords=reflective+green+tape
This one will most likely work too (better at closerange, worse at distance): http://www.amazon.com/TapeCase-3437-Green-Reflective-Tape/dp/B007Y7IRSY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1453386782&sr=8-3&keywords=reflective+green+tape
Don't get the tape that appears to be very lightgreen. Darker green is better. In my limited testing with tapes, without a diamond pattern works better for closerange, but this isn't conclusive and with some adjustment might even work well at large distances. I've improved a lot in the algorithms as well; if you like to test get without diamond pattern as secondary.
Alternatively, get a green light filter, put it over the flash and use plain white/silver reflective material (I've got similar materials in small localshops. The filter you get at officesupplies, the grey/white/silver reflective material from a $5 safety vest or just as tape):
Sample of safety vest; it's not tape but works: http://www.amazon.com/Neiko-Visibility-Yellow-Zipper-Reflective/dp/B0030AA3YK/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1453387694&sr=1-3-spons&keywords=safety+vest&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/Reflexite-Brand-Conspicuity-Tape-Diamond/dp/B00LGYS57Y/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1453387424&sr=8-8&keywords=reflective+tape
http://www.amazon.com/Transparent-Colored-Window-Film-Sample/dp/B00ORVX4RO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1453387525&sr=8-3&keywords=green+transparent+film
Don't spend more than a few bucks on the material unless you verified that it works well. It's really all cheap stuff, but people tend to overprice and sell it bulk. A good way to test if the stuff works in store, is to load the apk on your phone and see if it tracks the marker in the store. If you're not shy of compiling, compile the apk with SHOW_CAMERA set to false in Config.java for a good debugging view of reflectivity.
Edit: Also, if you're testing in store, check for return angles. This means if you view at an angle of 45 degrees, see if that works well and so on.

These grow dinosaurs or Cosmo beads so they can "create" things, or this spit ball science kit! This Science gift wrap would be cute for presents, these hand boilers would be cool for amusement purposes, and maybe some Caution Tape for decoration?

I'd like these earring display cards if I win! Thanks for the contest! Good luck with the party!

Don't get me wrong I love Talon grips just as much as the next person but the cost of replacement if some of it gets mangled by a holster, sweat, clothing, etc. can be a bit of a debbie downer.

As an alternative I bought a roll of anti-slip grip tape and have thoroughly enjoyed the ability to remove and apply a fresh grip + change things up to ensure I'm totally satisfied with the areas of coverage. Costs a few dollars more than today's cyber monday sale but it's not a one-time use ordeal.

For those interested, the exact tape I've been using (same roll with over a dozen reapplications since August of 2014 mind you) can be found here. This amount of grip isn't for those with baby soft hands but give this or another type of DIY roll tape solution a consideration sometime.

u/treehause · 4 pointsr/marijuanaenthusiasts

Standing them up is totally possible. If what you're looking for here is their ultimate viability, that's also a equally valid question. If you select ones with minimal root ball disintegration, they will be the ones most likely to survive.

I'm of the school of thought that planting a maladapted, non-native is often a losing proposition. This is a pretty good example. Casuarina as a species can generally grow to heights that are inappropriate for sandy soils subject to high winds. If you are ever given an opportunity and very likely a grant, you could rehab this place with native plants suitable for an ecological niche called Mesic Rockland Hammock, Tropical Hammock Flatland with limestone substrate -- No, I swear I did not make that up. Anyway, that's just pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking; enough of that. Here's how to fix the problem at hand.

  • Get some appropriate tools like a chainsaw and a couple of machetes, you're also going to need two colors of flagging tape

  • Select the trees that look like their roots were disturbed the least and whose tops were not broken. Tie a piece of flagging tape on these that signifies a good tree -- maybe use florescent green tape for these.

  • Now, select all the trees that are clearly beyond salvage;mark these trees with red florescent tape. What you are looking for in these bad trees is the ability to make polls -- you will need two polls for each good tree you are going to save.

  • Cut the bad trees down as close to the root color as practical (this is a bike path so you don't want a lot of stumps I assume), trim off all the branches and cut them to 6'-7' lengths. Ideally, you want the polls to be about as thick around as baseball bat, much thicker will be too hard to work with, and much thinner won't be strong enough

  • Using the machete very carefully, sharpen one end of the poll so that it can be easily driven into the ground.

  • Use the techniques described in this video for staking newly transplanted trees.

A motivated crew of a half dozen people could probably stake a couple of hundred trees over a weekend. Planting trees is a selfless gift to future generations. You are a Mensch I hope this helped.

u/dustball · 3 pointsr/HomeNetworking

I am a huge UBNT geek and supporter. My whole network is made up of that gear.

Except ... the cameras. Because I can buy 4 times as many with cheaper ones. And not pay monthly fees.

I have 4 cameras. They are all different brands (including a non-name chinese brand). Two are PoE, one is wireless, and one is USB. $40 to $50 per camera instead of $140 - $160 for UBNT gear.

I use Blue Iris 5 on a Windows Computer so it costs nothing in cloud fees or other monthly/yearly fees. But it can do pretty much anything you want, including e-mail alerts, phone push notifications, auto uploading to the cloud (ANY service including dropbox, youtube, amazon, etc).

I record 10fps from each camera (x4) and it uses about 15% CPU -- and this is not a powerful computer -- cost $799 new or something a year or two ago. Because CPU is so low, I still use it for the original intended purpose - home theatre computer for Netflix and VLC and BitTorrent. Blue Iris supports GPU acceleration and direct-to-disk recording (doesn't even bother to re-encode if it doesn't need to). Motion detection and object detection is insanely configurable. The computer has a 500GB hard drive which can save several months of motion triggered events.

I can also say, "Alexa, cameras on" anywhere in the house and Amazon Echo will tell Blue Iris to record all four cameras for 2 hours, or until I tell it to stop. Blue Iris also buffers the previous X seconds (configurable, just uses more RAM) so depending how fast I tell it to record, I can hear something crazy happen, tell it to record and possibly get that event from the past on video.

I had fun installing it, but only because I enjoy running wires and crimping RJ11 ethernet plugs.

Don't forget the warning stickers - they may prevent a robbery more than the cameras themselves.

The quality of video from the $45 cameras is just great. I can't imagine spending more money on it. The night vision is good too. And they include audio, IR LEDs, waterproof housing, etc.

u/Anti-Christ · 3 pointsr/childfree

I don't have a pool, but used to get several scumbags interrupting my privacy and peace and quiet every single week trying to sell me crap that I didn't want -- mostly religion, candy, pest spraying, roofing work, etc, etc. I purchased this sign from Amazon and haven't been bothered once since posting it on my front door. Blissful peace at last!

Edit to add: Love the part about the brick wall with spikes on top. I'll definitely be looking into that for my own home.

u/StrategicPotato · 4 pointsr/MouseReview

No, not really. But I do hope that this grip tape helps with sweaty hands! I don't have very sweaty hands in particular, but by PC room gets hot AF during the summer months (and these heat waves aren't helping). Also, the rubberized coating on both of these mice is starting to wear through in the places where my fingertips rest. So this is primarily a preventative measure/repair job above all else. This in not an attempt to improve performance, but I guess we'll see what happens anyway! I tried my best to make it look decent (and I think it actually came out rather nice!) but I'd like to hear other's opinions.

(More pics - Logitech G900 and Logitech G403)

(Gun/grip Tape!)

Edit: r/MouseReview appears to be a tough crowd to please huh?

u/saraloverock · 3 pointsr/AmItheAsshole

NAH but you guys have each paid minimum of $85 each just to watch a movie in relative quiet, (but there will still be other people in the room), you must really like this movie to take it so very seriously....it seems like there are better things you could’ve spent the cash on, but it’s your cash to do with as you please.

Since you’ve gone this far, why not take it a bit further & make reserved seat signs, and take some cordon tape to put around the seats so it’s very clear they’re taken.

https://www.amazon.com/Barricade-Yellow-Caution-Printed-Barrier/dp/B07F2BD98B/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?keywords=non+adhesive+barrier+tape&qid=1554271502&s=gateway&sr=8-8

u/Nightmare_Gerbil · 1 pointr/homedefense

You’re getting some good advice here already.

You might also encourage your dog to bark at people who approach your house:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/dogcare.dailypuppy.com/dog-start-barking-people-front-door-1739.html

Also, a sign like this one on your front porch might discourage people from hanging out there:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CQE081E/?coliid=I19I6LW4ID6ND9&colid=1Y6A41EHG1CBC&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

There’s a study that indicates that people are less likely to engage in antisocial behavior if they feel “watched.” You don’t necessarily need visible cameras, just a depiction of eyes that can unsettle drunks and loiterers and encourage them to keep moving:

https://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/daniel.nettle/ernestjonesnettlebateson.pdf

And make your house look well maintained and lived in. Boxes, unmowed grass, cobwebs, unwashed windows, etc can make it appear as though the house is vacant.

Good luck!

It would be possible to build this, but let us divert for a moment and talk about some practicalities involved.

The first concern would be to have decent reflectors, since cars and motorcycles already have powerful headlights and the visibility of a reflector is proportional to the power of the light shining on it. From any distance you would care to compare at, a good reflector will be much more visible to an oncoming car than a few LEDs (operated off of a typical small battery) will be. The only times your blinking LEDs will really matter is if you encounter someone with no headlights, such as a pedestrian or a bicyclist with no headlight.

Places like Wal-Mart sell "trailer reflective tape" that has alternating sections of red and silver strips. https://www.amazon.com/Premium-Reflective-reflective-trailers-reflectors/dp/B077W45QS1 (this pack is kinda big, but they sell smaller pieces too) --You use silver for the front-facing or side-facing reflectors, and red for rear-facing reflectors. Peel the backing off and stick two pieces of the same color together, cut it to size and make a hole to hang it by. It's cheap to make, weighs almost nothing and works well as long as it stays clean.

As far as making a brake light (presumably for a bicycle),,, getting anything to work like a car (off of the actual brake activation) is really rather complicated and involves connecting a switch somehow to the brake lever or somewhere along the brake cable. There are cheap tiny ones now from China that you could modify to work much better-- https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33009185886.html? -- this thing is a switch that rides on a brake cable, but it only uses a button cell to light up one tiny 5mm LED. What you could do is buy this thing and then just use the switch part of it to activate a larger, brighter brake light. The question is how durable the switch will turn out to be in rain or snow.

Another possible method is this: there have been cheaper bicycle lights that had a "brake light" that was activated by a ball switch that would be turned on by the force of the bicycle slowing down. This doesn't stay on when you are stopped, but then it is much less complicated than using any accelerometer, and the accelerometer won't stay on when you are stopped either.

Sorry you have to deal with this. as far as steps

  1. Try to work it out w/ the owners of the venue if at all possible. Sounds like you have exhausted that but just trying again will be a plus.

  2. have an attorney draft a nice C&D letter for you stating that there are numerous hazards on this active farm, and you fear that someone will be hurt. send via registered mail.

  3. get some cheap trail cams and mount around property.

  4. get some electric fence signage like THIS and hang, and install a low-watt fence...for the cows of course

  5. make a pass with the honey wagon every once in a while so the field is nice and fertilized

  6. lock the gates and be sure to post many 'no trespassing' signs.

  7. be sure to remain calm in all interactions with the other owners and the sheriffs dept.

  8. the other ideas of something hilarious that would ruin the pictures is also a nice bonus, the sky's the limit on this one, as long as its legal.
u/kabbage123 · 3 pointsr/VideoEditing

I'd really, really rely on getting this effect through the lens rather than in post.

Do you or any friends have a go-pro? That'll do it.

...or if you can't afford a GoPro/lens, just get a fisheye mirror and film your subject through the mirror.

https://www.amazon.com/PLX18-Circular-Acrylic-Security-Diameter/dp/B0009HK8FG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1483339603&sr=8-4&keywords=fisheye+mirror

If you can't afford that, change your location to the Grocery store, have your talent stand under the big aisle mirrors that are in 90% of grocery stores, and film it at that angle with a telephoto.

Get creative! That's the joy of film-making.

u/bike_lane_bill · 4 pointsr/bikecommuting

It is super reflective! It lights up like crazy under headlights. I ride with a backpack covered in MOLLE loops and wrap the tape around all of them, so from behind I am blinding.

Here's the stuff!

Oralite (Reflexite) V98... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0041PCG2A?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Also, it is pretty flexible tape but you will still wanna cover it in a layer of clear packing tape just to tack it down firmly.

u/modern_rabbit · 8 pointsr/VEDC

Wool blanket: it can double as a groundsheet. Or tarp. Or both.

I'd say swap out the wave for something cheaper, but you have actual cash in there, I guess you're pretty set.

Tourniquet.

Duct tape. Paracord. Flagging tape.

Shovel? Do you even get snow in the South???

u/LouDiamond · 1 pointr/motorcycles

lol, no kidding... 'diamond grade sheeting', i bet you need tin-snips to cut it too....

still, i'd like to buy a roll of the 2nd-highest stuff to put in a few place on my bike.

actually, buying a little of the diamond grade stuff to put over existing reflectors (like in your forks) may not be a horrible idea as well....

edit: apparently it's not so bad: http://www.amazon.com/Safe-Way-Traction-Conspicuity-Reflective/dp/B00ICWRLGE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395068601&sr=8-1&keywords=diamond+grade+reflective+tape

I second buying cones. I bought some off Amazon for practicing with my daughter.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B8BZ2O4/

They are under $12 each and work great (and now covered in tire marks).

u/Cordroto · 3 pointsr/discgolf

The past two years I've tried LEDs taped to discs and glow tape. The LEDs were highly visible, but if they got wet they would die prematurely. Or, they would go flying off when you hit a tree. The glow tape I used was really bright too, however, it was very difficult to remove from the disc. Very tedious if you want to play tournaments with the same discs you throw for glow. Plus it would erase the foil off the disc.

This year I've been slowing stocking up glow versions of my favorite discs. I also bought the Slinger bag and a 3 foot battery powered UV strip. I plan to line the bag with the uv strip and just keep my glow discs in the bag.

u/Poemi · 3 pointsr/pics

You can look like an asshole too, even if you're not rich!

u/benbart · 2 pointsr/fatbike

I did exactly this for my Clownshoes and snowcats. Using tape just like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ICWRLGE/ 2" wide just baaarely fits in the Clownshoes. Had to trim the width down for the snowcats.

I got 15ft per bike with maybe 2 feet leftover each. The local fire/safety store sells the stuff by the foot and it came in blue, yellow, red, alternating red/white and of course, white.

It does not stretch.

u/anonymousjew582 · 4 pointsr/legaladvice

Use this and tie it around the chain around 1-2 foot intervals. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00A1SQAY6/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1485620985&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=flagging+tape&dpPl=1&dpID=41NnsPJqDrL&ref=plSrch

I've seen it be used on chains in places like national parks and recreational areas.

u/Scarecrow398 · 2 pointsr/Military
