Everything's FINALLY arrived. Had my Wiitar for weeks now, but unfortunately I couldn't use it until the adapter arrived.

Ordering the adapter was a hassle and a half. Placing the order was super easy, but Amazon decided to cancel shipping after a few days and not inform me of it. I checked my Amazon account a couple of days before delivery was due and found that the package had been returned to sender without my authorisation.

For a domestic package I wouldn't have minded, as it would only add maybe one or two days to the whole process of getting a product from Amazon, but I'd been waiting over a week now for the adapter to come and I wasn't having it. I contacted Amazon customer support to find out what happened, but from their end, the package was still coming to me. I was escalated to another customer support rep, who told me that the only option was to refund the cost of the adapter and to buy a new one. Great. I asked them what had happened and she did some checking and then came back and told me that actually, I couldn't have a refund, and that I'd have to wait several more days to see if the package actually arrives. Fucking fantastic.

I pressed and managed to get the refund after talking to customer support for over an hour. I tried to get them to compensate me by upgrading the shipping for free (literally 3 quid) so I wouldn't have to wait over a week again as a result of Amazon's mistake. This was when the customer support rep started getting rude and cutting me off, and ultimately terminated the session. Never had that happen on UK Amazon... (And no, the original product never did arrive).

Anyway, I got my refund, and was very happy to find that the seller of the adapter on Amazon had discounted the product, so I ended up paying roughly the same price that I originally paid but with upgraded shipping this time. Still an utter waste of time and money, but hey, Amazon does that sometimes.

The adapter finally arrived today. Forgot to mention: also had to order a USB extension cable off their Amazon Basics line. Got the 3m one - seems decent enough quality.

Total cost?

• Got a REALLY solid deal on a new in-box Wii Les Paul on eBay - £0.99 plus an extortionate postage charge of £6.99, so £7.98 all in all for a pristine Wii guitar. Not bad at all (usually the new ones go for about £30 - not sure why no one bought this one, cos it's definitely not a fake).
  
• Bought this female to male USB 2.0 extension cable for £4.47. 3m, so it's long enough that you can plug it into your PC and move around with it or whatever. Can't complain about this at all. I have use for this anyway, as my current USB cables don't stretch far enough when I game with my PS4 controller just in general. Could've bought a longer USB cable, but I can kill two birds with one stone with this.
  
• The adapter... Amazon tells me that I spent a grand total of £24.01 on this. The controller is garbage and not worth using, but the cable works well. If you don't buy the upgraded shipping, you'll probably spend around £20 instead. I'm hoping that Amazon refunds me the import charges, as by UK law the product isn't eligible for any import charges due to the price.

  Lesson learned: just buy a fucking Raphnet adapter. I saved 12 quid lol. Admittedly, I overpaid for shipping, and I'll probably get import fees refunded, which would bring the cost down to about £29 if you were to do this. And you probably wouldn't have the same hassle that I had with the Amazon adapter. All in all, though, the adapter works, and I've got a sweet, sweet Wiitar to play, so I'm not really that disappointed (assuming the adapter doesn't crap out on me...)
  
  If you can afford to spend maybe an extra £20 for the Raphnet, just do it. It's really not worth the hassle trying to get a good deal. In the future, though, if I ever need a new guitar, I don't have to worry about buying another bloody adapter - I can just buy another Wiitar off eBay, and hopefully for cheap.
  
  £37 is also almost exactly how much I spent on my new in-box Xplorer, so make of that what you will. I'm not sure if Xplorers have gotten any more expensive since I bought mine. I can't really give any impressions on how the Wiitar compares to my Xplorer, either, as I've only set up the guitar and made sure everything works at the moment. I've not done any proper playing. I can tell you that the Xplorer was very awkward to play due to the shape of the body, so I had to do this weird leg cross over thing to get it to sit nicely on my legs when sitting in my chair. It seems like that's the main complaint people have with the Xplorer, and I've seen Randy do almost the exact same leg cross over thing to get his Xplorer to sit properly on his lap. Also, I ended up with a gen 1 Xplorer which apparently had crappy frets. Mine did, so I messed with the fret pad (the slit mod where you slit the sides of each fret) and got them playing excellently, but unfortunately I overcut and they only lasted a few months before blue and orange started occasionally sticking under the slits I cut - hence why I'm buying a new guitar.
  
  Oh, almost forgot: I haven't figured out how to get whammy to work yet, but this is also a problem with the Raphnet adapters. I probably just need a tutorial.

As others have stated, the NES Classic and SNES Classic consoles are for sale at pretty much every Walmart, Best Buy, etc. You can even use the free Hakchi program to put whatever games you want on them when you tire of the games that come on them but the NES Classic comes with all 3 Mario games released for the NES console and the SNES Classic comes with Super Mario World on it.

The NES Classic comes with 1 controller, SNES Classic comes with 2. You can purchase extension cables (that come in packs of 2) for like $10 that fit both consoles as the controllers for both are interchangeable. For $13 you can buy a bluetooth receiver to plug into the consoles (HERE) and use completely wireless 3rd party controllers or even PS4 controllers to play the systems instead of the wired controllers that come with them.

That is your best option. Brand new hardware, HDMI to hook to your new 4K tv. NES Classic has the 1 Mario game you want, 2 more you'll play later, 27 non-Mario games and the ability to add the entire NES library to it if you wish. Ditto for the SNES Classic when you want to play Super Mario World except you can't put all the games on the console at one time when you tire of the 20 games that come on the system due to the games being larger. You can only put a few hundred at a time. I keep 80 on mine with the roms for every single SNES game made saved on my computer so I can change them out at will because I like keeping all my games on the main menu screen, no folders.

Super UFO 8 (30-50 USD) :
Cheap, and basic, get the job done. Works with most clones. Uses software from about a million years ago; no, I'm not joking. It runs the same software that was on the old late 90's floppy readers updated to work with more modern hardware.
You have to be careful with savegames, there are some extra steps involved. Does not support ANY games that require specialized chips. Also, it smells funny (it has a strange chemical odor that never completely goes away). Theres a ton of these out there under a dozen or so different names, but if they are in this price range this is probably what your getting.

Creme-de-la-creme, all the basic functionality is there, and it has some nice bells and whistles. Solid interface. DOES NOT WORK RELIABLY WITH CLONES! USE A GENUINE SNES! Here is the switcher that I use. My tv has s video input so it works great because I can use systems that output s video or composite with this one. Here is an s video cable that would work for both your SNES and your N64. Here is a composite cable that would work with your model 1 Sega Genesis, and Here would be am example of composite cables that would work with you NES.

As for the surge protector, here is the one I use and I really like it because it can hold a lot of the big power bricks that these older consoles like to use. Anyway hope that helped point you in the right direction. Of course it is a little bit of an investment, but overall I bet you will be much happier with a set up like this. I know personally I could never go back to constantly physically switching consoles out when I want to play them, this makes it so much easier to enjoy all my consoles with minimal effort. Can't give you the best, but I can suggest maybe using the Wii U Pro Controller if you like how those feel. You'd have to buy an additional dongle to make it work though so I wouldn't say its the most cost effective solution.

The PS4 is a great alternative. If you can't be bothered with a bluetooth connection (Windows 7 has some compatibility issues with the bluetooth protocol used in the ps4 controller. Something to do with legacy issues I'm assuming) just hook it up with a micro usb and use DS4Windows. Free software, and works fantastic for any other games.

GameCube and Game Boy Player is the standard setup. The startup disc for the Game Boy Player can be a bit pricey these days, but you can softmod the GameCube and use the free Game Boy Interface software as an alternative.

From there, you can get an HDMI adapter and HDMI capture card (lots of those to choose from). Or if you need to save some money, a good S-Video capture device like the IO Data GV-USB2, an S-Video splitter, and a GameCube S-Video cable will still get you a pretty decent-looking capture. Either way, set it up in OBS and you're good to go.

I'd suggest also getting an SNES controller adapter. I find it way nicer than using the GBA as a controller. There's also one for Wii Classic Controllers if you prefer.

There's a S-Video input right on the back of that monitor. One side plugs directly into your console, the other into the monitor itself - super simple:

I should add that I forgot to mention that Sega Genesis needs to be modded for S-Video - if your friend can help you mod the monitor for RGB it'll be a breeze for him (it's soldering like 5 single wires and a couple resistors - pretty darn easy). ---OR at that point, if you are actually modding the monitor for RGB, you'll probably forget about the S-Video and just use a regular SCART RGB cable or whatnot.

Also, if it makes your choice easier, S-Video really is excellent quality. You really have to see both side-by-side to notice any difference compared to RGB (especially if you're still new to all this - it's really just the finer smaller differences you can notice between the two connection types).

As far as newly manufactured pads go, the CirKa SNES pads are actually pretty good, but they cost about $10 each, which is getting close to the original pads' price, and the original pads are still better. The Tomee pads are cheaper (I got a pair for $6) but they're just plain awful and you should probably steer clear unless you want some beaters for your friends/guests to abuse.

I recommend picking up an old ASCII Pad, which is a little more expensive than a standard controller but includes turbo and slow motion, for your own use.

For the cables, I agree with the other sentiments to just use whatever works with your TV in the short term and don't worry about it unless/until you're ready to drop some change on a nice CRT and/or upscaler. If your current TV has an svideo port, it's worth using it instead of composite in most cases, but you have to watch out because some of the cheaper cables just run the same composite signal through an svideo jack, so you don't get any image improvement.

This is my favorite set up to give friends. Looks good and mostly foolproof hardware wise!

Just ran into this conundrum myself. Bought a SNES Classic and wanted to get a wireless controller for it: This one to be exact. Unfortunately it was lag-tacular, (probably a 1/4 second delay, but enough to be irritating on platformers like MegaMan X and Super Metroid).

Returned it, and picked up this and this instead. The difference is night and day, and the controls are super snappy and responsive. Picked up the regular SNES adapter version as well and it works like a charm too.

The two most popular cases are the RDS case and the PDP case. I don’t own the PDP case but I did research it before purchasing the RDS case. Both cases hold everything that’s included. The RDS case holds the controllers in the top while the PDP case has dedicated cutouts in the foam for the two controllers. The RDS case is superior for storage because it has extra room after storing the basic items (console, controllers, power cord/adapter, HDMI cable). Most people tend to use that extra storage space for controller extension cables. The RDS case is also $10 cheaper on amazon.

To sum it up...

If storage and price are your main concerns, go with RDS.

RDS Case

If you don’t care about price, want a hard plastic shell, foam cut-outs for your controllers, and prefer the aesthetics of the PDP case then go with that one. Some people really like the look of it with the swappable game cards on the front. To each their own!

PDP Case

There are a couple actually. There's the Innovation Super 8 and the Gamejoy FC adapter. There's also the Retro-Bit RetroPORT, which is exactly the same as the Gamejoy FC Adapter but with 72 pins for NES carts instead of 60 for Famicom, so you'd need a 60-72 pin adapter. Personally, I think the Super 8 is the better adapter. It has slots for both cartridge types, it maps the controller B and A buttons to Y and B (which is way more comfortable, and what SNES-NES controller adapters map them to), and it has a better NOAC, even though it's nearly 20 years old now. The only real downside to both adapters is that they have composite only video.

This cable is a true s-video cable and it works great, much better than composite if your TV supports it.

One time, when I was like 9, I had this badass super nintendo controller that you could set all the buttons to auto-mash at certin intervals, this is it. I loved that controler. It wasn't handy for all games, but like platform shooters and stuff, where you needed to continually mash the same button over and over, it was awesome. Also for swimming in Mario Land. Anyways, I used it for everything. I got used to the size of it in my hands and it felt right to just use it in default mode, regardless if I was making use of the auto-mash functions. So, one day, I was being my usual hermity self and hanging out in my parents room playing Donkey Kong Country, because my brother wanted to watch Oprah in the living room for some reason; and I came up on this level that was impossible to pass. I forget which it was, but something is screaming "mine carts" at me in my head. I spent like 5 hours trying to pass this shit. Failed every time, and after the last time, i took my awesome asciipad and launched it at the wall while yelling the F word. It hit the wall and went into exactly 1 million pieces. We stayed in that house for like 3 more years after that, and every time I vacuumed, I found a new little piece of that controller.

Also, I got in so much trouble for throwing a tantrum and swearing.

I strongly encourage you replace the battery in the cartridge but you can also get this accessory that can save your progress. It only saves your progress for one game, though.

Properly cleaning a game cartridge is very easy. With only 2 special tools 3.8mm & 4.5mm Security Bits you can open up any old game cartridge.

After opening the cartridge, carefully remove the circuit board and hold it only by the edges, and then using a regular pencil eraser (a soft one) buff the contacts to a nice gold shine. Clear the eraser debris away with a dry cloth / can of compressed air. Put the cartridge back together.

Games cleaned in this way, when used in a game system with good internal pin connectors, will allow you to insert the game, press power once, and play to your heart's content. No more flashing screens, removing/blowing in cartridge or other annoying tricks required.

Yikes. That cart is in shambles. It's still salvageable but wow, what a mess.

Read up on cleaning contact pins here. Finally based on the first picture, I'd clean the console as well.

Edit: if 90% alcohol and swabs don't fix the issue, I advising purchasing some Mr Clean Magic Erasers and buff out the tarnish and any remaining rust from the contacts. Invest in the security screw bits so you can get into your console and games.

Hopefully you have a setting for it like mentioned, if not, your tv just doesn't like that resolution. Solution is different tv, modded console, or upscaler. They do make cheap ones, but they are usually not great and you get what you pay for. Also remember that a lot of the cheap composite to hdmi "upscalers" don't actually upscale at all. They just convert the composite line to hdmi, and still send the same signal. So you get the same problem. Also some HDMI inputs just don't like 240 or even 480i at all. I ran into this thinking a cheap $10 SD to HDMI adapter would solve a similar problem for my genesis. Nope, not a true upscaler.

I use the 8bitdo retro receiver which I sync with a Wii remote, and then I plug the snes classic controller into the Wii remote. Works like a charm, and it allows me to play “wireless”:

It's not the best, but it is dirt cheap and it doesn't have a normal composite line to bleed over into your s-video feed.

I don't know this set in particular, but it looks like a pretty decent pick up as far as free consumer sets go. According to my google, it has component, so if you really want to get cheeky, you can pick up an rgb to component converter and set up a snes or genesis with component.

Look on Amazon for people who make extension cables for older controllers. My girlfriend and I have a similar set up in our living room and have 6ft extensions for our Super Nintendo controllers (these to be exact) so we can play from the couch with ease!

I’m not a normal poster on this sub so hopefully I formatted this properly. I was browsing for a couple retro styled wireless controllers so my girlfriend and I could play some of the Classic games that come with Nintendo Online. This one was exactly what I had in mind and I noticed that it’s on a pretty good sale so I thought I would share.

This is an NES style (no analog sticks) Bluetooth controller with shoulder buttons, a home button, and 2 extra turbo face buttons. It connects wirelessly with the Switch without an adapter. It works with the Switch Online Classic games and it shows up as a normal controller so you can also use it with regular switch games that don’t require analog sticks or motion controls.

It can also connect to the NES/SNES Classics wirelessly if you use the Bluetooth version of the 8bitdo Retro Reciver.

The N64 uses 2 cables, a power cable and an A/V cable. The power cable is completely proprietary and unique to the N64 and it looks like this.

The A/V cable is a standard RCA composite (yellow-red-white) on one end. The other end is a proprietary connector shared by the N64 and Gamecube. If you have a Gamecube or find a Gamecube A/V cable, you can use it for the N64 as they use identical cables. It looks like this.

If you have a newer TV and it doesn't have composite input, you'll need to find some kind of adapter. Composite cables have 3 channels: left-audio (white), right-audio (red), and video (yellow). The audio channels (red and white) can be plugged directly into your sound system if you have RCA inputs, or they can be fairly easily adapted to whatever inputs your sound system has.

The video channel (yellow) might be more problematic. Your best bet might be to adapt from RCA to coaxel or s-video, if your TV has either of those inputs. If you're limited to HDMI and HD component (red-white-green-blue-red), search for "composite to HDMI adapter" or "composite to component adapter."

Depending on the adapter you get, you might not need to route the audio separately as I described above. Just note that it is an option available if necessity demands it.

Then ignore GCVideo unless you feel like spending the cash for a new 'Cube.

Any old RCA>HDMI box is going to get you to about the same place and I'm going to assume that your TV doesn't support S-Video.

It's not region locked. But watch some youtube videos on putting NES and SNES games on there - it's not hard at all to put any roms you want on there... Even if your childhood favorite isn't on the list.

You should grab a nice SNES style USB controller too. I recommend 8bitdo’s controller for $25. They’re a good brand. It will connect to your computer through a USB cable and wirelessly if you ever use it on a SNES Classic Edition. A cheap option is this one I picked up for $6. It’s actually not too bad either.

You have to "install" a controller receiver. But it just plugs on the controller port. Nothing internal or strange. Plug, sync, and play.

I use the Switch Pro Controller with an 8bitdo retro receiver but it's also compatible with PS3, PS4, Wii remotes, Wii U pro controller and every 8bitdo controller. Works great!
You can update the receiver's firmware via USB, and all the buttons work as intended. You can even use Select+down to go to the menu.

I bought the NES30 Pro and I love it. To use it on your SNES Classic I believe you'll need this dongle.

There is also a controller that looks more like the SNES gamepad if that's what you're after.

Which console's everdrive were you thinking of getting? The SNES has a device called a Nakitek Game Saver, which is relatively cheap and allows you to create save states on games. It's a neat tool.

The SNES Classic has been relatively easy to find so I suspect that most people who wanted one managed to grab one at some point. They're so common that Amazon Spain (which ships to Canada) currently has them slightly discounted. It's pretty rare to see Nintendo products sell for below MSRP.

Some people use those white click erasers for stubborn spots and some people just use alcohol and q-tips without taking anything apart. Keep in mind any abrasive you use is wearing down the electrical contacts. I am most comfortable with paper towels and CRC because I feel it's the cleanest clean while being gentle.

All you need is the correct bit to remove the N64 screws. Once you get the top off of the N64 you can just press up on the plastic from the bottom to force it out. Then just clean it up.

Overall, the reviews are pretty solid. But the top rated review points out some cheap design and claims it's not much different in terms of quality as an official composite cable.

Sorta -- 8bitdo makes a wireless SNES adapter. It's compatible with wiimotes which are compatible with the SNES classic controller.

I'm not aware of anyone testing this out yet, but in theory you should be able to plug a SNES classic controller into a Wiimote, pair it with the 8bitdo adapter, and use it with your original SNES console.

I don't expect it to ever be possible to directly plug a SNES classic controller into a SNES console; the voltages used by the original SNES controllers and the SNES classic controllers differ.

I unintentionally found a way to use my two wireless wii guitars with USB just today.

I bought this SNES controller at a nearby mall. It's for the SNES Mini but comes with a USB adapter for PC. The adapter so happens to be perfectly compatible with the Les Paul. It works flawlessly. Input lag is the same as my Xplorer, and it worked first try. The only thing I needed was a USB extension.

20$ for a semi-crap SNES controller and an adapter for most Wii controllers. I'm considering buying another one.

I have a 2009-era Sharp TV with one S-Video input, so I decided to try it. Overall, I'd say it was worth $8. I wouldn't say that it's immediately noticeable, but when you look closely, you can definitely see sharper lines around big color changes. I can also see each pixel more clearly, and you can see the Nintendo 64's anti-aliasing and horizontal blur at work.

There are a few that come to mind when it comes to soft shutdown cases. Most, if not all, cases in this list require the installation of a script, which can be done through the Raspbian terminal (accessed by quitting EmulationStation, either by pressing F4 or by pressing START while in ES and selecting the bottom menu item, then Quit EmulationStation). You could also access the terminal through SSH using PuTTY.

I have these, I'm not sure why they're listed at $20 bucks now since I bought them for $8 last year. I got these because I have a universal screwdriver handle that I thought they would fit into. Of course, they don't so I have to grab the end with pliers sometimes when I'm getting a screw in or out. They're high-quality and work fine. I don't think you understand. It's a piece of hardware, such as the Retrobit. It's legal to make a piece of hardware that acts as an intermediary, such as an adapter, or that reads the games itself. It's legal to manufacture adapters and hardware, just not the games themselves and rom downloads have questionable legal issues.

Here's another example. This allows the SNES to play Genesis games.
Or this for PC which lets you read them on your computer. Both are absolutely legal.

The d-pad isn't perfect bit it's not the worst I've used. There's a tradeoff in precision control but I think its worth it.

People might say this is a janky way to do it, but I successfully replaced the battery in a Final Fantasy III cart with NO SOLDERING. I just used electrical tape. Worked fine. Just wrap it up really tight..

You can get something like this. It takes SD cards and it can connect to a PC via USB. There may be better choices than this one, I just did a quick search. They won't work with any games that use the SuperFX chip though.

I use the 8bitdo retro receiver with an SN30 Pro. I don't notice any obvious lag or interference issues, but I'm not a speed runner or high-performance gamer. Battery life is okay - usually lasts about 4-8 hours, though I've never tried just pushing the controller till it died.

In hindsight, I wish I'd gone with the regular SN30. The extra niceties of the Pro model are okay, but they mess with the grip a bit since the controller is larger, and I find that I prefer other controllers for playing modern games on other consoles or PC. I got the SN30 Pro for nostalgia, so I wish I'd gone all the way and gotten a traditional one.

This depends on the cartridge. Older 5-screw games, you can use a standard screwdriver. Otherwise you need a 3.8mm socket gamebit.

Do you have a Wii Classic Controller? That'll work with some of the Wii U games (usually the ones that support multiplayer) and it'll work on Nintendont out of the box.

This controller is junk but I believe it is the cheapest way to get a USB adapter. It worked for me via Windows Retroarch so I would imagine it would work for retropie as well.

I had a wiitar and i found this cheaper alternative for the raphnet adapter that has worked fine for me. it’s a $15 SNES usb remote that comes with the dongle you need for wiitar to usb. it has worked fine for me. it is short though so you would need a usb extension cord thing.

I don't have a guide but it only requires unscrewing things. Watch this video from the start until about 9:30 mark. Video The metal tray below the disc drive unscrews too.

Of note I got the SFC30 for easier use for my kids (push the Green button) but again the parts are swappable with official controllers if you want to keep the purple scheme, or just buy the Bluetooth SN30.

As far as I know, most of the sega carts use the same bit as Nintendo. Just look for a Nintendo Bit set. This is what I have. I think the 3.8mm is for the carts and the 4.5 is for the console. The others use a standard Torx bit. I don't remember if its T-8 or T-10. Just a get a set of Torx Bits, maybe even a Security Torx Set. Those are the ones with the pin in the center. But they work on ones that arent security screws.

No, this was a SNES controller, with toggle-able turbo and auto-fire for each button. Even without those cheats, it was precise and reliable.

Some newer TVs are getting rid of composite in, but many still have them. You just need that cable if your SNES is equipped with an RF switch. The cable is the same up to GameCube.
