I am grateful for:

  1. This subreddit. I love you all so much.
  2. My family. They may all not be good people, but it's nice to know that they're around to be supportive of my achievements.
  3. Music. I'm just so thankful to whatever phenomena that is responsible for creating melodies and amazing sounds. Music is my stress reliever.
  4. My education. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to have an education sponsored by the taxpayers of my country (I am a scholar), and I hope to return the favor by serving my countrymen with whatever future expertise I attain.
  5. Everyone around me. Even though I'm quite antisocial, the fact that there are people around and everywhere feels great. It's just the sense of having someone to remember, even just the most irrelevant face, that matters to me :)

BONUS: I am grateful for those who pray. I am a catholic, and I hope this doesn't develop a certain dislike for me, but I adore those who pray for the improvement of other people's lives. It means a lot to care. :D

    STAR FLUXX!

Well, as far as silly card games go, I'm partial to We Didn't Playtest This At All and Fluxx which support 2-15 and 2-6 players respectively. Both games can be really quick or take a while, but I've always found them to be great fun, and they both have a bunch of expansions, if you find that you like them.

Of course, if you want to delve into the world of board games, I'm a big fan of co-op games like Castle Panic and Pandemic. In Castle Panic, you work together to defend a castle from oncoming hordes of monsters and in Pandemic you need to cooperate to keep viral epidemics under control while finding a cure. Castle Panic is great fun, a simple game, and easy to get into, but I've never found it an easy game to win which keeps it fresh. Pandemic is a bit more complicated, requiring a lot of strategy and cooperation, and it can be brutally difficult at times, but that just makes winning all the more satisfying.

If you and your friends like a little friendly competition, I'd suggest something like 7 Wonders or Bang!, which was the game that got me started down this path. In 7 Wonders, you draft cards to build a civilization and compete for victory points. It may seem a little complicated at first, but once you play a game or two, it really starts to shine. In Bang!, you enter the wild west where one of you is the sheriff, and the rest of the players are deputies, outlaws, or renegades, each with their own win condition. The thing with this one is that everyone's role except the sheriff's is hidden. You can play Bang! with as little as 3 players, but it really only gets good if you have 5 or more.

If you want to do some research on your own, check out /r/boardgames or http://boardgamegeek.com/ which has a pretty comprehensive database of all the board games out there with ratings and reviews.

As a Rick and Morty fan that is what I have to go with here! : )

We own the McFarlane building sets and they are pretty cheap, fun and cute (definitely not Legos but they aren't as bad as the star ratings would have you think at all).

Total Rickall is soo much fun and based on my favorite episode. You have to figure out who is a parasite and who isn't.

This collectible Rick is hilarious too (warning NSFW due to the bird being flipped)

Playing this game in a Rick and Morty version is sooo much fun!! These playing cards are great as well.

I am sure whatever you end up getting will make your husband very happy!! Happy shopping; hope my suggestions help you! : )

Play board and card games that can be finished in under 10 minutes.

Love Letter | Amazon | Video review -- plays in minutes. You'd be surprised how much fun and strategy a 16 card game can pack. It's for 4 players.

Score each round as an individual win, instead of the official method which is the first person to win 5 rounds wins (it would take too much time).

Love Letter: Batman | Amazon | Video review -- might be a more palatable retheme for the students. There is one rule difference which you should ignore because it would result in multiple round winners -- correctly guessing another player's card earns you a victory cube only knocks your opponent out of the round.

There are many official Love Letter rethemes, but they all introduce rule variations. So be careful about choosing other themes.

Telestrations | Amazon 6-player | 8-player | 12-player | Video review -- It's like the telephone game, but with drawings.

You write a word in a notebook, flip the page, draw a picture of that word, flip the page, and hand your drawing pad to the person on your left. Then, you take your new notepad handed to you by the person on your right, look back at the last drawing, then flip forward and write what you saw, flip the page, and hand the pad to the left. When you eventually get your own pad back, everyone shares their pad one at a time. It's hilarious.

Skip the scoring system. It's beside the point of playing.

Your challenge is finding the right group size to play the game with your limited time, and strictly enforcing the time rule where people stop drawing when the time is up.

You can also play this game on the cheap by stapling sheets of paper together. But Telestrations uses a dry erase note pad, and if you use real paper you'll be going through a ton of paper. The name of the do-it-yourself version is Eat Poop You Cat, for a reason lost to time.

Ask /r/boardgames for suggestions on 10-minute games that meet your target number of players. And ask for which Love Letter rethemes would interest teens the most, while not being too different from the original Love Letter.

For durability of card games, look into getting protective card sleeves. /r/boardgames can point you to sleeves that will fit the specific games you have.

I'm big into anime, reading/writing/words in general + board games. My lists reflect that somewhat ! I started reading when I was 3-4 thanks to my oldest sister, and many classmates and teachers were surprised or even disbelieving when I entered preschool already able to read. I got called a nerd since elementary but I never took it as an insult, since I really enjoyed reading and I saw it as the reason I was able to do so well in school in the first place (though referred to as a nerd, I actually was never very studious). I was also called a "walking dictionary" during junior high, which I also took as compliment!

Board games is a funny one. I always liked the classics growing up and went out of my way to learn the more "obscure" ones like backgammon and othello, but didn't know about "modern" board games until I started college, where I walked into an "English conversation club" meeting out of curiosity (they used anime characters in their posters...) . Turns out, they played board games as a way to naturally get conversation going. And it seemed to work really well, and I loved it! Though English is my second language I learned it early enough (at around 7 y/o) that I didn't gain much skill from the actual purpose of the club, but I think it definitely helped me develop socially in general, plus it was nice to interact with different international students. I came to love board games because of it and once I ended up coming back home to community college was able to continue the habit by briefly becoming a regular at a board game cafe. I'm busier these days, but have by now gathered my own small collection of board games (':

Copypasta #2 from an answer I gave to a similar thread:

You could pick up a 2014 Modern Event Deck (B/W Tokens). Add a couple Sorin, Solemn Visitors to go alongside the Elspeth the deck comes with, 2 more Inquisition of Kozileks, 2-3 Fatal Push, another Path and trade the Shrine of Loyal Legions for Secure The Wastes and suddenly you have a pretty viable deck.
Tokens has a great matchup against Death's Shadow, just about any midrange deck, Burn and Affinity. The Tron matchup is godawful, and playing against combo decks can be interesting, but you could easily go 3-1 with this deck if you play enough to understand how matchups against the meta decks work.
People seem to overlook Tokens most of the time, but when it comes to building a budget modern deck I don't think it gets much better to be honest. It is also much more flexible and much more fun to play than the next best budget deck choice, which would likely be Burn. There are tons of strong possible curve outs and a lot of disruption, which makes it very versatile.
Comes with a playable sideboard, too. If you want to upgrade later on down the road, its pretty easy to get Marsh Flats, Godless Shrines, RIPs, Stony Silence and Thoughtseizes.
90 bucks on Amazon. Also comes with some really nice sleeves and a deckbox if you don't have one for it already.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00IR2W4WA/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new

PS: Many of the cards, esp the manabase, hand disruption and sideboard can be used in other W/B/X Midrange decks or Hatebears, if you decide to go all-in on the format later on.

Love Letter - Ultra fun game for 2 to 4 players, super small, super simple, but tons of replayability. One of my favorite games ever, and a hit with everyone. Currently $8 on amazon.

Coup- Super basic social deduction game, tons of fun for not a lot of money. More complicated than Love Letter, but not very difficult. The hardest part about teaching a younger kid this game is the idea that you can (and should) lie to your friends. Currently $9 on amazon.

Red 7 - This is a small 2-4 player game, super fun, super simple. Currently $9 on amazon

Basically, you can get all three of these for ~$25.

u/RanLearns · 3 pointsr/RedditForGrownups

Fluxx is super fun. That's the link to the original version but they have lots of themed and branded versions too. Star Fluxx, Stoner Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx, Batman Fluxx, Chemistry Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx, and lots more. Pick your favorite or get the original.

Fluxx is fun because the goal of the game can change during the game. You might be just about to win and then the goal changes. The rules can change mid-game too, but it's pretty simple to understand. You pick up X cards each turn and you play X cards each turn. How many can change at any time. Some games will end quick and some will be a good long twisting journey of fun. You'll definitely want to play another game when one ends. And if you ever have guests over, it plays really well with 3-5 people too.

u/Hollyingrd6 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I wish I knew your budget so I could figure out the price range to go for but here but I'll try to suggest something from three ranges.

First Is like to recommend any dice from chessex. They are a great company and make dice that are well balanced. You can pick them up at your local card/comic/board game shop for around 8$ a pack. The nice part about cheeses is it comes with a non bag see through case with your dice that makes them great for showing off.

An awesome dragon puzzle that you both can put together and hang on the wall after your done

Boss Monster is a fun boardgame where you try to kill the heros instead of the other way around. It is quick to pick up and a fast play if you have a limited time.

Quarriors if he likes boardgames and rolling dice this is for him. It's a dice board game that functions like a deck building one

Zombie Fluxx is one of my newest and favorite tabletop games. One evening my mom and I decided to play. Now my mom doesn't really like playing with the zombies in the deck, but since I really wanted to, we did. From now on my mom should want to play with the zombies in the deck, because thanks to those pesky zombies she won the game. She had at least 1 of every zombie you could have and thanks to the "Zombie Jamboree" goal, where you had to have a single zombie, a pair of zombies, a trio of zombies and a quartet of zombies, she won. I gave her such a hard time after that.

Thanks for the contest!

Edit: Tabletop games are my newest addiction, but I also love a good computer game. But no really good stories from playing video games comes to mind right now.

u/Oneitsamaway · 3 pointsr/ModernMagic

BW Tokens lists can shift depending on your local meta-game, so if you're interested in the deck you can invest in many of the "flex" cards that can rotate out depending on what you're looking to beat. Check out primers for BW Tokens here and here, and check out some of the decklists that have placed in Grand Prix and Qualifier events. It's a deck whose list can shift quite a bit beyond the key cards.

Your quickest route to build BW Tokens will be to pick up the Modern Event Deck. It has most of the staples you'll need plus some good starting sideboard tech. Here are the individual prices of those cards as of this morning, and you can check out how it does against some other decks in the meta by reading the recent "Modern Hero" series of articles. Even with minor modifications, the deck has game against a lot of other things in the format. The MSRP is $75 U.S., but you can often find it online for around $50 U.S. With the remaining budget you have, you can easily invest in more expensive staples like [[Thoughtseize]], a few Planeswalkers, and a play set of [[Godless Shrine]].

The good thing about BW Tokens is that you're in colours that give you access to some of the hatiest hate cards in the format, so your sideboard will really shine. [[Stony Silence]], [[Rest in Peace]], [[Rule of Law]], [[Oblivion Ring]], and [[Torpor Orb]] can all be picked up on the cheap, as can more hand disruption like [[Sin Collector]] or [[Duress]]. Things like [[Aven Mindcensor]], [[Leyline of Sanctity]], or [[Auriok Champion]] are more expensive, but still within your budget as you only need about two of them for the sideboard.

One last thing to mention: fetchlands are often a huge barrier for entry in to the format. While they can definitely give you an edge in competitive play, a play set of [[Marsh Flats]] isn't necessary when starting out with this particular deck. You already have access to cheaper sources of mana fixing, and you can always pick them up later if you plan on playing the deck in a larger competitive event.

u/beSmrter · 3 pointsr/boardgames

u/slashbored covered the bulk of the options, for sure. I'll underline that each game will likely want something slightly different. At least for maximum efficiency, there isn't a one size fits all so counting 12 games and buying 12 Planos may not be the best idea.

Considering the setup, play, and clean-up processes and looking to eliminate time bottlenecks will help guide you. For example, multi-section Plano style boxes are really cool...for some things. But keeping 5 denominations of coins all in separate compartments adds a lot of clean-up time when players (or you) have to re-sort the huge pile of individual coins used throughout the game back into their individual sections. In that case, it's easier to shift all that time to the players, a few seconds here and there fishing their change out from a mixed bowl or two through out the game and reduce the clean-up to just seconds of dumping the bowl into a single ziploc.

On the other extreme, searching for one or two chits of a particular unit type in a whole pile of chits (of many unit types) is silly; multi-section boxes or GMT style counter trays are definitely the way to go.

I'd recommend must haves as:

  • set of silicon muffin cups or small condiment cups or dishes to hold bits during play

  • 6-12 single section tupperware style boxes in the 2-3" range (store all the pieces for a single player in one, pass out, play, clean-up easy-peasy)

  • 25-50 small ziplocs in two sizes, ~3x4" and ~1x2"

Other options for organization during play (links for example, rather than specific product recommendations):

  • lazy suzans or make-up caddies

  • card stands or business card holders

  • dice trays

    Inside the box:

  • alternative to Plano, off-brand bead and jewelry organizers are often thinner, lighter plastic in a greater variety of dimensions for more options and easier to fit in game boxes

  • Deck boxes, also available in several other sizes

  • Dry Vinyl Tape, only sticks to itself. Good alternative to deck boxes and really great for large tiles and map pieces, etc.

u/myanrueller · 1 pointr/rpg

The Star Wars RPG beginner boxes have great "learn the system as you play adventures". The adventures are broken down into a series of "encounters" and each encounter is designed to help the players learn the system in some way, and combat is typically reserved for the third or fourth encounter.

Force and Destiny

Age of Rebellion

Force Awakens

Also those beginner adventures tend to be challenging enough for a new party of those who don't roleplay, but not so challenging as to not make them want to continue playing RPGs (which Lost Mine of Phandelver in DnD 5e starter box has issues with). Each adventure also has a free adventure followup. AoR Followup. These follow up adventures don't read as easily (they read more like FFGs pre-published ones, but are still really excellent).

For GMless and a one shot I recommend Fiasco. Which can also be found in PDF form here. It's a system more geared towards actors and story tellers, and less for those that want heavy combat. There's even a video of Wil Wheaton playing it with some writers/actors. And there are tons of free playsets.

For one shots with a GM:

I recommend Dread. It's a horror system that uses a Jenga tower instead of dice rolling for any sort of check. In Dread the idea is you're playing in a horror movie, there's even an Alien (Ridley Scott) playset for free on the website, and the goal is to survive. The GM has the players pull from the Jenga tower when their character does something out of their normal skill range, or under duress. A good Dread GM will get the tower to fall at the most dramatically appropriate moment. It takes skill and practice, but it's also an excellent system.

Tabletop Dread Episode.

For beginners, those are my recommendations. Star Wars FFG is a more traditional, but easy to read RPG, while Dread/Fiasco are one shots that are incredibly fun.

u/MacabreChaos · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I commented on here earlier, but the thing I recommended was already listed. xD Sooooo Imma suggest some board games!

If you like deck-building games, Dominion is a classic. I didn't think I would like it, but the premise is pretty simple, so it's easy to pick up.

I like the Chinese version of Bang which is called SanGuoSha. It's not always in-stock on Amazon in English; I think right now all the ones offered are in Chinese. I think the characters and items are a little more complex than Bang's, which is why I prefer this version, but Bang is good as well. :)

I also like Betrayal at House on the Hill. It usually makes for a unique experience each time. You explore a haunted house with the other plays, picking up different omens along the way until you trigger "the haunt." The thing is, the haunt varies depending on the character who triggered it, the omen that it was triggered with, and the room it happened in! So there's tons of different haunts making for awesome replayability!

Also, I gotta throw in a recommendation for Lifeboat. Lifeboat is pretty entertaining. The premise is that you're on a lifeboat with the other players. You're trying to get to shore. The person with the most points wins. Each person "loves" and "hates" another player. If the person you love survives, you get bonus points. So you want the person you love to survive and the person you hate to die, but you also don't wanted your loved one to get more points than you otherwise they would win...

Each character has different skills/strength/HP. You get to pick an item card (point items. weapons, health) every round in order. First person gets first pick, but the last person controls the boat. You can choose to switch places with someone, trade with someone or mug someone, or row the boat (you draw 2 navigation cards and pick 1 to add to the stack). If you fight someone (e.g. you want an item but they won't give it to you), all players can join on either side, and the total side with the most strength wins while the other side loses health.

At the end of a round of turns, the navigator picks from the navigation cards drawn from rowers. Those cards dictate who goes overboard and loses health. If a navigation card has a seagull on it, you get closer to shore. 4 seagulls = game over.

It's a super fun game, but be careful who you play with... Some people get REALLY angry or upset when shit goes down. Some people really hate that there's no enforcability... Like if you say you'll trade someone an item but don't go through with your end like a douche, you can do that. Buuuuut I guess if you make too many enemies, people won't take your sides on fights and could work together to kill you first.

Hope this helps!

u/aqlno · 3 pointsr/pkmntcg
  1. The next best step is to start buying singles and build competitive decks. You could take a half measure and look for the Mewtwo vs Darkrai Structure Decks which are the best theme decks available at the moment. You won't win any events with these, but they're a huge step above normal theme decks.

A good starter deck is Greninja BREAK, as it's one of the few (if only) competitive decks that can be bought for ~$100 total. Every other competitive deck is easily $200+

  2. Cards are typically legal in standard for 2-ish years. Sometimes 3, but never less than 2. It's also important to recognize that Expanded format is not a place where cards go to die. It's played at many competitive events still! The competitive season starts after US Nationals in July, when qualifying points for the World Championships in August can no longer be earned. Competitive events for the new season start around September/October.

  3. A pokemon's attack type is determined by the type printed on the card, in the upper right corner. Not by the type of the energy required for each attack, or by the type of energy attached to a pokemon. Each pokemon only attacks for a single type, unless explicitly stated otherwise on the card.

  4. One of the biggest misconceptions of pokemon is that you build "colored" decks. Typically when building a deck you don't consider the type insomuch as what cards are good. You ask "what do I want my main strategy to be?" and then you build around that. This leaves typing out of the equation for the most part. Typically you will see 3-4 types in a single deck. With the majority of pokemon being 1 type for energy consistency, and then 3-4 other pokemon types that may have 1-2 pokemon each for support. A popular deck in Expanded uses 5 different types (dark, fighting, water, steel, and colorless) because each pokemon supports the strategy of the deck, regardless of their type!

I dunno how much you know so I'll assume not much. RPGs are just "collaborative improvised storytelling" If you're interested in the Star Wars RPG then you're in luck. It doesn't take a lot of money to "dive" in. It actually takes about 25 bucks. You'll get a handful of odd dice, a premade adventure and several premade characters that are all tied into the story. The first adventure even typically teaches the players how to play as they go. The publisher for the system has 4 "seperate" systems for the SW universe, you just need to pick one that fits your groups desires. Generally they are

-Edge of the Empire- you are mercenaries or criminals, generally less force/jedi focused, typically set between the prequels and originals

-Age of Rebellion- you ARE rebels, set during the war, its about military stuff

-Force and destiny- Pretty much all players are force sensitive and is also set during the height of the galactic civil war

-Force awakens- setting is just before the Force Awakens, some force sensitives and jedis

That being said they are all compatible with each other with minor differences such as morality, or duty.
I like edge of the empire a bunch because there is nothing specifically "expected" of the players but being a jedi is fun. Another commenter suggested the oneshot podcast, they don't exactly teach you the game but theyre pretty fun if you have a lot of time on your hands.

If you liked the game then you can dive in deeper and get the core rule book, followed possibly by premade adventures if you want more help or inspiration

here are some of the starters

Here's what I'd do if I had to rebuild a collection from scratch for $1k trying to have a wide variety of play styles:

7 Wonders $32.99
Agricola $45.79
Battlestar Galactica $39.97
Carcassonne $30.02
Carcassonne Inns & Cathedrals$15.71
Dixit $22.65
Dominion Big Box $69.18 Prosperity is one of the best expansions; Alchemy is not, but you're pretty much getting it for free in this set.
Eclipse $61.49 It wouldn't be a board game library without a 4X game, and I think Eclipse is the best currently.
Eldritch Horror $40.47 - I love Arkham Horror, but Eldritch streamlines a lot of the fiddly rules of the original.
Formula D [$41.96] (http://www.amazon.com/Asmodee-FDUSASM-Formula-D/dp/2914849648/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1395757676&sr=1-1&keywords=formula+d)
Gloom $17.98
Guillotine $13.52
King of Tokyo $30.19
Love Letter $9.34
Memoir 44 $47.43
No Thanks! $9.98
Pandemic $31.65
Power Grid $32.27
Puerto Rico [$31.20] (http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games-195RGG-Puerto/dp/B00008URUT/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395756360&sr=8-1&keywords=puerto+rico)
Race for the Galaxy $24.11
Resistance, The $17.99
Roborally $37.49
Settlers of Catan $37.99
Telestrations $19.99 Awesome and funny party game. My friends and I eventually tire of Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity, but seldom do so with this.
Ticket to Ride $37.24
Ticket to Ride 1910 Expansion $18.21
Tsuro $24.22
Twilight Struggle $49.98
Village $35.47
Wits & Wagers $19.99

That comes up to $946.47; room for a couple more expansions or another game.

I play mostly with my husband and when we get a chance we have friends over to play as well, so I will recommend a couple of great 2 player games.

Agricola All Creatures Big and Small is the 2 player version of Agricola. Agricola does play 1-5 and I've played it several times with just two players and it is fun.

Lost Cities

Smash Up I want this one to play with my husband!

Rivals for Catan I haven't played this yet but it's probably fun!

Race for the Galaxy Space! That's almost reason enough, plus it's a really fun game.

You may have some of those. I couldn't find a couple I'd like to recommend on the UK amazon so I'll just link to the Board Game Geek pages for them.

Caesar & Cleopatra

Balloon Cup

Sushi Go!

Sushi Go! is a quick to teach, quick to play light drafting game. I love it as an intro to the drafting mechanic and as a filler.

No Thanks

Probably my favorite "light" card game. Very easy to teach.

For Sale

Great filler auctioning game. Every time I teach it we end up playing 2-3 games in a row.

Love Letter

A must own IMO. Quick and easy.

Zombie Dice

Under rated push your luck dice game. Plus zombies.

You should be able to pick 2-3 from this list and be happy with it :).

I suggest looking for “Trainer Kits” like this one:

Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon Trainer Kit Lycanroc & Alolan Raichu Card Game https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6TC9MD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3MXZDbZNC8STP

They come with instruction guides, a playmat, all the necessary tokens and two training decks that can be merged into a full deck once you understand the mechanics and get additional decks to play with.

It’s a pretty good starting place for both of your to learn, and the deck(s) are designed to be somewhat simple for beginners.

After you have a good understanding of the game you can get additional 60 card Game Decks, or can five deep into the rabbit hole of buying packs and trying to construct your own decks. For new players I’d suggest Game Decks and a few boosters or even a Trainer Box (8 packs, card sleeves, tokens, additional energy, and a storage box with dividers.)

Varieties of any of these should be easy enough to find on Amazon if you search for the right terms, or can typically be found at any big box store that sells TCGs (Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc...)

I hope this helps and you get everything you need.

u/urmyheartBeatStopR · 1 pointr/ModernMagic

Err... to get into magic in general? Or to the modern specific one?

For modern format I think the march madness event deck which is $70 but it's really a good value, if you can splurge the extra $20.

http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-2014-MODERN-Event/dp/B00IR2W4WA

It went up in price but it's the best imo starting point for this modern format.

I think your brother should try standard first to see if he like mtg before going into modern format. Standard is probably would be cheaper in short term and more costly in long term vs modern. If you want to go standard route then /u/traceurling advice seems pretty good.

edit:

Because you get two deck with traceurling's advice and you both can play. With my modern advice you only get one deck.

What level are these students?

There is a game called "Love Letter" that I bought in the US a while ago and really enjoy. It is made for 1 to 4 people and requires reading the effects of cards but the rules are pretty straightforward otherwise. Easy to setup too.

Here is an Amazon Japan link for you:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/ラブレター-Love-Letter-Boxed-カードゲーム/dp/B00J1JLT8I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1523802091&sr=8-2&keywords=love+letter+game

Good casual card game. Great artwork on the cards too!

u/FredrickBismark · 1 pointr/AskMen

Evil Baby Orphanage is a quick and cute game that is like Munchkin and magic drafting. Quick to set up and easy to learn.

The various Flux variations.

Smallworld is relatively easy to learn strategy game that you'll love until all your friends leave because you attacked them WHEN A PERFECTLY GOOD TRIBAL SQUARE WAS AVAILABLE.

Castle Panic! is a cooperative game kinda like tower defense.

u/Asclepius24 · 2 pointsr/pkmntcg

Not a theme deck, but this is probably the best thing for new players to learn on. Theme decks are really crummy and slow and don't give a good "feel" for what the game is actually like. This Mewtwo vs. Darkrai pack is straightforward enough that new players can learn on it but also well-built enough that it won't be boring.

I would definitely, definitely suggest getting enough sleeves for the decks though since the cards that come in there are worth more resale than the $30 you'll spend on the decks. One pack of these for the Darkrai deck and another of these for Mewtwo would work if you like color-coordination :)

u/Albatrosson · 1 pointr/boardgames

I think it's a great gateway and a great choice! It was our opener game for every game night for several months after we got it.

I still love it, but one of the best things about it is how fast and brutal it is. We had a particular game where a couple of people were all about turtling. They never attacked, they never went for points, they just kept healing and buying powers that help them survive longer. Made the game just drag on with no actual change in status. In future, I'd probably do something to mitigate that by possibly removing some of the healing powers.

I also hear Monopoly Deal is a really great card game, actually. And cheap. And only 15 minutes. And name recognition. Might be a good fit in your family! :)

u/jiyounglife · 14 pointsr/abdiscussion

Broken dishwasher, broken washing machine, broken dryer. Dishwasher now fixed but we don't have a dryer at all and our washing machince just buzzes and doesnt wash. Ended up going to the local laundromat to do all of my laundry and sheets. Still not sure if we're renewing the lease. Maybe I should just find another place to live >(

I bought project highrise during the summer steam sale. That was a lot of fun. Oxygen not included is hard for me. I can't get the whole filteration system working (air and water)

Bought a game called Mint works. SUPER FUN! EVEN IN SOLO MODE! I'm going to go play some more of it right now. Can't wait to try playing it with other people. I do have a few other board games coming from amazon: Pandemic, Treasure Hunter Game, Gloom Second Edition: Unhappy Home expansion, Dairyman, monopoly deal, and i preordered splatoon 2

I finally was honest to myself and worked on my budget and student loan repayment plan. Budget looks kinda ugly. I'm terrified. There's never going to be enough money in this world... Also, I've been overspending like crazy. I'm really good at budgeting when I see the numbers. I was just in denial for the longest time because I wanted to treat myself. I didn't have the "college experience" so i went out a lot, ate out a lot, and overall threw money at crafts and animals. I'll have to be more findful now.

I wanted to get another hobonichi, but realized that they won't have them for 2017 anymore. I started looked at other notebooks. I do have a midori, but I don't really want to use it for bullet journaling. It gets quite expensive because I want to use that and keep that more as a notetaker/jot it down. I bought this STALOGY which looks pretty good. I'll be keeping an expense log, bullet journaling, and random notetaking in it.

I bought a vintage sewing machine recently. The singer slant-o-matic. I used them as a middleschooler in home economics and it's 100% BOMB. I was thinking about getting a more modern machine, but went Nah. The set I bought also came with a bunch of extra bobbins.

Last week I was at a fair and saw some people doing pillow lace/bobbin lace. It looks so awesome. I want to try it! It's a bit costly to get started though... I'm going to hold off on it for a while and use nontraditional materials to make some lace.

Since I'm really struggling with making friends and DOING SOMETHING that's not gaming, redditing, animals, and cleaning... I figured I could go take some community college classes (interior design, fashion, flower arrangement, etc), cello lessons, piano lessons, modern dance/ballet/jazz/hip hop lessons, sewing lessons, or something like that to get me out of the house.

On Wednesday, I went bouldering for the first time. I'm a bosssssss. JK. I haven't worked out in ages. My arms basically fell off when I woke up thursday morning. Couldnt even flush the toilet, open the fridge, or open the door. They even felt swollen. My legs were fine though. Normally with swimming, I get soreness in my core and legs. This is definitely a new muscle group I'm not used to have pain in. I've been taking some tylenol to help with my pain. Not sure if I like this enough to go back. I stopped going to the gym because I specifically didn't want large shoulders. IDK why when I work out, my shoulders just get bigger and bigger. My torso is a XS/S but my shoulders are an M. I'm absolute terrified of heights as well... So...maybe this isnt the sport for me. It's fun though! I'd go again, just wouldn't get a gym membership for it.

u/groundshop · 6 pointsr/lanparty

The lans I go to are too small to really bear much advice to you on the questions you listed.

Where I can provide some insight is in the types of table top games you should consider. Lots of folks (in the lan community) have been exposed to traditional pen/paper stuff like DnD. If you're looking to spice things up a bit, consider trying out some of the modern board games that are out. I'm sure some of your attendees will have already been exposed to these, but for the rest that haven't, they'll probably strike at least an interest or a few questions. BoardGameGeek has a list of the top board games out right now, some of which you might not have heard of. Settlers of Catan, Dominion, Race for the Galaxy, Carcassonne are some of the most popular. They're flashy, they're interesting, and they're usually under an hour (if not usually under 45 min) to play. They're an up and coming type of gaming that's spreading fast among the table-top/CCG/comics folks.

Edit: In retrospect, I kinda seem like a fanboy for this post, but holy shit they're really awesome games.

u/Starstar1010 · 2 pointsr/Cruise

Just One is FABULOUS and takes two seconds to learn! You can easily take it out of the box and travel with it in a baggy!

Avalon/Werewolf social deduction type games are fun for big groups!

Age of War is a small push your luck die roll game (not the best for a big group but for a portion of the group)

Box of Rocks is a trivia type game where it is all humans versus a box of rocks

Set is good solitaire or with big groups but is going to cause lots of head scratching. It's good for those who like puzzles!

Red7 is a personal favorite but doesn't play to 10 people

u/sirlost · 2 pointsr/Tacoma

7 wonders is super fun once you get the hang of it.

another fun game that i just recently played is Boss Monster. the rounds go pretty quick usually and it's pretty easy to pick up how to play.

its a lot of fun and a nice way to test out your creativity in telling short stories. There are also story games that have helped me to organize my thoughts better. There's two of them I highly recommend: Once Upon a Time ( https://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Games-ATG1030-Once-Upon/dp/1589781317 ) and The Fool's Journey ( https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/154421/The-Fools-Journey ). Its great if you can play with people who are excellent story tellers.

u/Sinnocent · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would love to get this for my husband. He always talks about getting back to playing MTG and we're always looking for games that just he and I can play. We own over 70 board games but many of them need more than 2 players, so this would be great for us to be able to spend some game time with one another but without the hassle of set-up, needing lots of space, and/or needing a large amount of time.

He's been having some ups and downs lately and his birthday is coming up in May. I'd love to surprise him with this. He takes care of me wholeheartedly (even when he's frustrated about it) and I can't ever thank him enough for that (because I have many medical problems and he is always there for me). Thanks for the opportunity.

u/cwhiii · -1 pointsr/magicTCG

Amazon has bulk (1,000) cheapo cards for under $15. You won't find anything super impressive in them, but they will give you all kinds of stuff with different types of rules to learn about. That's how my brother and I got started. http://www.amazon.com/1000-Bulk-Magic-Gathering-Cards/dp/B0028QC50C

These don't have any land, which you will also need, but that's just a few more bucks, http://www.amazon.com/300-Assorted-Magic-Gathering-Basic/dp/B002JAOJJ2 (300 pack) ~$6.

Right about $20 total.

It'll probably be tough to build any themed decks, but it'll let you play around on the cheap(ish) with lots of options.

A lot better than a single pre-built deck, in my opinion. And it will cost about the same.

Another benefit of going this path is it'll let you have decks in each color so you can see what you like. Also, you'll have decks enough to play with friends, even if they aren't willing to buy into it.

u/gacman47 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Congrats on the new job!
Since I saw a few board games in your list so here are some suggestions:

Hot Rod Creeps! Played this game the other day with some friends and new people. Probably one of the best board games I've ever played. Not for everyone though. Whole lot of fun anyways. Very customizable.

Star Fluxx! There's like 5 or more different editions of this game, but I think this is my favorite edition. Based around Science Fiction movies and TV shows its a game in which the rules change all the time. It can take a really long time to play or only a few minutes. Very unpredictable. Some gameplay here from some TableTop enthusiasts.

u/poringo · 2 pointsr/boardgames

10 players: Slide 5 also known as Nimmt 6 is very easy to play, it's a nice mix of luck and skill, so anyone has a chance to win. Also all players put a card at the same time and no one player is eliminated so there is no down time.

3 -5 players : No thanks is also very easy to play, is a push your luck game that can be taught in less than 5 minutes.

Those 2 are my go to games to quickly start a game and get everyone playing with everyone understanding the rules in 2 turns.

u/ann_nonymous · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

My brother is a huge huge fan of the Walking Dead. He has roped me into it and I find I enjoy it too. My family loves playing games. Our favorite game is [Zombie Fluxx] (http://www.amazon.com/Looney-Labs-033LOO-Zombie-Fluxx/dp/1929780664/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367622912&sr=8-1&keywords=zombie+fluxx) It is a lot of fun and has a great zombie twist. u/wanderer333 · 2 pointsr/Parenting

Apples to Apples, Dixit, Jungle Speed, Pictionary, Anomia, SET, Loaded Questions, and Jenga are a few that come to mind where the adults wouldn't necessarily have an advantage over the kids. Also Fluxx and We Didn't Playtest This are both hilarious card games that would be perfect for kids in that age range, but I have a blast playing them with other adults on a regular basis too; Spaceteam looks like another good one but I haven't personally played it. If you're looking for more involved strategy games, Ticket to Ride and Carcassone would be fine for that age, just require more of a learning curve. Cranium and Quelf are silly games that involve a variety of tasks (drawing, acting, singing, trivia, etc) and although they're supposedly aimed at adults, kids love them too (just skip cards that are too hard; or you could also consider the kids' versions of both games, Cranium Cadoo and Quelf Jr.). Uno (or Crazy Eights with a regular deck of cards) is always a classic, and you can always play charades or the category game!

edited to add: not sure about a good choose your own adventure story, but Mad Libs are always fun!

u/TelrikRoch · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I suggest Boss Monster! It's like a nostalgia trip to the 8-bit era of RPGs in card-game form! Only, you're playing the boss monster instead of the heroes. It's for 2-4 people, and games wrap up in about 15-20 minutes as well. Hero cards are drawn and piled into the middle of the playing area, and then go into the dungeons based on what 'treasures' are in each dungeon tile. It's awesome waiting and seeing which traps they'll run into, how many heroes don't make it, etc.

u/Applejaxc · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

I started playing D&D when I was 7. I've been enjoying it (and the general fantasy zeitgeist) for 12 years now. It was a jumping point for actually caring about math, writing skills, interpersonal skills, puzzle solving, critical thinking...

I think Dungeonworld might be solo based?

I cannot recommend Once Upon a Time more. I've bought it twice. It's a card-based storytelling game where every player cooperates to tell the same continuous narrative, but everyone has a different ending to reach and different cards to play. If you think your 7 year old likes telling stories I think it's a great investment.

And it scales from 2 to (I think) 9 players, although once you pass ~5 it starts to get silly. There's expansions focused on specific fairy tale genres, like knights saving princesses or pirates fighting squids.

u/WheatGerm42 · 1 pointr/magicTCG

Do you have any friends that play? You can try bulking up a collection to get you started with something like this: http://www.amazon.com/1000-Bulk-Magic-Gathering-Cards/dp/B0028QC50C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382153940&sr=8-2&keywords=1000+mtg+cards
It's completely worth getting into. Super fun, great community.

Also, once you get the idea of the game down, find a local game store (LGS) near you and ask them if they do events.

u/FallenAerials · 19 pointsr/boardgames

Monopoly Deal is an awesome card game that scratches the Monopoly itch. Fun, fast-paced, confrontational card game full of "take that!" mechanics and acquiring properties. Plays very well with 2-5 players and works great as a gateway game. For $5.99 on Amazon, it's a great price too. Really recommended. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NQQTZCO/

u/andyoulostme · 23 pointsr/magicTCG

I don't know where you live, but the people I know definitely think gaming setups are expensive. That's why people buy them rarely, and invest in ones that last a long time. There are expensive hobbies out there -- skiing, hunting, equestrianism off the top of my head. But those aren't run-of-the-mill hobbies, those are expensive hobbies. Playing Mardu Vehicles is also an expensive hobby.

Let's compare Magic to similar games for its audience:

  • Introductory gaming is about the same price as similar options. F2P online games cost $0 to get into, as do free 30-card decks. Light board games (part of a moderately expensive hobby) are around $10-$20, as are Planeswalker decks.
  • Middle-of-the-road gaming is more expensive than many options, but close to board game habits. Free online games are a staple of Magic's target audience, and a moderately-serious FNM is likely to cost $30-$50 more than League of Legends. It's more on par with various popular board games. A player going for budget HS decks is also saving money compared to budget MtG decks.
  • High-end MtG gaming is god damn expensive, especially for your target audience. $300 for Temur Aetherworks gets you most (all?) of HS's competitive field, or LotR LCG + 6 deluxe expansions + 2 saga expansions, or every major expansion for Sentinels of the Multiverse, or the Elder Scrolls series + the Mass Effect series + GTA 5 + Rocket League + Witcher 3.

So if you're a new gamer, MtG is expensive compared to LoL, HS, and Clash of Clans. If you're kind of invested in gaming, Magic is similarly-priced to board games but will rotate out. If you're heavily invested in competitive gaming, Magic is a money vortex.

    Magic is expensive.

If I had to choose, I would actually recommend this Darkrai/Mewtwo Battle Arena Set. The Mewtwo and Darkrai are good cards in themselves, but the sets have a LOT of nice cards that you will use in a LOT of decks such as VS Seeker, Prof Sycamore, Muscle Band, Lysandre, Level Ball, etc.

Here is the full set list: Ta-Dah!

For me, the main draw is that it is a set that will help you learn the game really well AND they are easily recyclable cards for a huge variety of decks.

Although it only has 0-2 creatures, I think you want B/W tokens. In truth, affinity's probably your best bet, but with a but with a budget of $150, that's not going to happen. Tokens is good because it makes a lot of small creatures using spells like [[Lingering Souls]], [[Spectral Procession]], etc. and uses anthem effects like [[Intangible Virtue]] to make them bigger. If you're interested, you can buy the Modern Event Deck on Amazon for ~100 dollars and use the rest of your funds to upgrade it.

Race For The Galaxy supports 2-4 players in the base game.

Race For The Galaxy: The Gathering Storm (Expansion #1) adds a 5th player and also includes rules for solitaire play.

Race For The Galaxy: Rebel Vs. Imperium (Expansion #2) adds a 6th player.

It's a card-based game. There's no board. It's very simple to learn, but the strategy is incredibly deep for a card game. Play time is around 30 minutes.

Each expansion adds some new play options on top of the base game rules but a LOT of people just use the new cards from the first two expansions and continue to play using the base game rules.

This is currently my all-time favorite game.

I'd like to suggest stacking games. They seem to be a safe bet; they don't require reading comprehension, can be quick and decisive, and does not need alot of strenuous dexterity (depending on your table).

Click Clack Lumberjack has you whack away a tree with a plastic axe. It's pretty fun. You can also try its sequel, Bling Bling Gemstone, which plays the same way but for Gems.

There's also Animal Upon Animal where you stack wooden animals on top of each other based on what dice value you roll.

For something with words, I suggest Red 7, a more balanced and strategic version of UNO Cards and Fluxx. The words are single-sentence rules, and mostly its the numbers and colors that are significant.

  2. I've heard great things about these Fluxx games!

    Thanks for the contest

Go to walmart and buy a deck builders toolkit

It really is a good value and will give you everything you need to make various decks.

If you ever decide to take your game to the next level you may consider playing "standard". This is the format that is most played in magic and consist of cards printed within the current block and the previous one. Right now "standard" decks are only going to have cards printed in "Scars of Mirrodin" Block from last year: Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, and New Phyrexia. and the present "Inninstrad" Block: Inninstrad, Dark Ascension, and Avacyn Restored - Releases next month

In the summer Wizards releases their yearly "Core" set. With last summers being called M12 - Magic 2012
The Magic: The Gathering game expands every year, introducing new worlds filled with deadly perils, ancient adversaries, and fantastic new adventures. At its center is the Magic core set, the game in its purest form: evocative spells, menacing creatures, and infinite possibilities. But even at its core, the experience is ever-changing. The Magic 2012 core set boldly continues this tradition.

Each cycle normally starts around September so expect Scars of Mirrodin to "cycle" out and for Return to Ravinca to "cycle" in.

Feel free to post here if you have any questions.

Dauntless was great until we accidentally crashed the build (sorry!).

Phoenix Covenant was an awesome tactics card game that felt like something you could just get absolutely enthralled with.

Has Been Heroes was a fun little game that I felt was betrayed a bit by the control scheme of the demo. I'll probably pick it up on Steam at some point in the near future.

Game of Thrones: Hand of the King was very easy to pick up and had a good amount of depth to its strategy. Of note: It was the only game I had my heart set on buying to the point that when no one on the show floor had it I went to Amazon.

Gingerdead was an interesting little tower defense game that was fun but random. Not quite Munchkin random, but random enough that it cooled me on it.

Sentinels of the Multiverse Ok I'm cheating on this one since Sentinels isn't exactly new or unheard of, but it was my first time playing and I had an absolute blast.

My local game store had a large blind box of 200 mostly commons for pretty cheap. She was wowed by the amount of cards and had fun seeing what was inside. This is just for fun or collecting.

I got her a trainer kit to teach me and her how to play the game. I keep this together like a board game, not mixed with the others:

There's a card game called Once Upon a Time.

It's designed to be a collaborative story telling game. Each player has a hand of cards, each containing a story element (character, item, etc.). They also have a one-sentence ending. One player at a time is the narrator and is trying to play out their hand by fitting each card into the story and landing on their pre-defined ending. The power of narration changes hands through an interrupt system.

That game would be easily converted into a writing prompt generator. Just deal kids a few cards and an ending, and tell them to turn that into a fairy tale. The best part is that it would be randomized, so you don't have to think of a pile of ideas on your own.

u/scaramanga1 · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

Hey dude, I am a newbie myself and after alot of chatter with a store here in the UK they all prety much advised on the 2011 deck builders kit that I got from them http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Deck-Builders-Toolkit-Board/dp/0786955651/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312813520&sr=8-1 I have prety much got a deck of each colour less a few lands but it comes with everything!

So I have just been messing with this and working out what I prefer colour wise a few days in so far and love it!

u/IceBearNeedsLatte · 5 pointsr/boardgames

If you wanna try out something like DnD I would recommend the Star Wars rpg beginner games, it comes with everything you need to run an adventure. Check out these 1 and 2

When I wanted to try getting into board games I just bought something that looked interesting and got my friends to play since then we do several board game nights a month now. Games can be relatively cheap and simple or expensive and complex. Do you maybe have an idea of what type of game you want to play or setting (fantasy, sci-fi, etc.)

u/snowbucket · 1 pointr/magicTCG

do you have friends who play? usually people who have been playing will have troves of extra cards they dont want. But if you are looking for pre built ones there are those. Also what i find great are thrift stores. I found cards fa dayz there.

but your best bet is the deck builders toolkit
it comes with a bunch of cards and lands to learn how to build your own decks

http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-Deck-Builders-Toolkit/dp/0786955651/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1331361340&sr=8-2

u/Rommyappus · 1 pointr/phoenix

The starter decks are a good start but they usually don't have enough cards in them, and too many land. This is a good thing to get as well:
https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-Deck-Builders-Toolkit/dp/0786955651

It will have random cards in it from all colors, so he'll be able to tweak and customize the decks to his liking.

And yea.. this can be an expensive hobby.. but it doesn't have to be. If he is able to work I'd say time to get a job if you want more than this!

u/caffiend2 · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

If you are going to start buying cards, I cannot recommend buying a fat pack enough. Having a list of every card in the set is very helpful not only for learning terms, but also for planning card combos. It's the most cost efficient way to get 9 packs of boosters, a spin down life counter die, 100 land cards, and a neat box.

Also, for a staring player, the deck builders tool kit is a nice selection of very useful cards.

u/JJTheJetPlane5657 · 10 pointsr/boardgames

Most of your prices are way too high. They're still used games, you can't sell them at new prices.

Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon

  • Your price - $40

  • Amazon - $41

Chronicle of the Godslayer - Storm of Souls -
Rise of Vigil - Immortal Heroes

  • Your price - $20/$20/$20/$15
  • Amazon - $29/$30/$30/$22

    Munchkin

  • Your price - $9
  • Amazon - $17

    Munchkin Impossible

  • Your price - $9
  • Amazon - $24

    Battlestar Galactica

  • Your price - $25
  • Amazon - $37

    Dungeon Twister

  • Your price - $40
  • Amazon - A lot

I'm getting tired of this so I'm going to skip ones that are good deals...

    Carcassonne: The Catapult

  • Your price - $10
  • Amazon - $15

    Van Helsing

  • Your price - $20
  • Amazon - $19

    Zombie Fluxx

  • Your price - $9
  • Amazon - $12

    Dresden Files

  • Your price - $30/$30
  • Amazon - $37/$28

There are a few games that would be good deals, but most of them need to be re-priced. To make it worth people's time to buy from you then you should really price $20 under Amazon (for bigger games) if you want them to pay shipping. Then it'll even out to only $10-ish less than Amazon for them.

u/ExpandYourMind808 · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

If you want to get a lot of cards for cheap than I suggest Amazon. There are tons of singles as well as huge bulk buys like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0028QC50C/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1418523546&sr=8-1

You are not guaranteed great cards with bulk buys but you can get a collection going. Personally I buy singles to get the perfect deck for my play style though.

u/klawehtgod · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

Definitely talk to the judges ahead of time. But you have a legit handicap so I would be very surprised if they don't accommodate you.

The easiest solution is to just bring a friend/family member along with you to be your hands. It should be allowed, just notify the judges first. If that's not feasible or just you'd rather not, here are my suggestions:

Shuffling is actually not a problem at all, since your opponent is free to cut/re-shuffle your deck after any time you shuffle, to prevent cheating. So you'll just cut out the part where you shuffle ask your opponent to do all your shuffling. Just explain the situation to them. Again, I would be very surprised if someone wasn't willing to help out.

For holding your cards during a game, you could probably bring something like this.

Drafting does seem like a challenge. My solution is to ask the person drafting immediately before you to not put the cards down on the table. Rather, ask them to hold them for you while you look at the cards. They just picked so they're not gaining any info by watching you look at the cards. Once you decide on a pick, remember where in the pack your card is (like, how many cards from the back it's positioned) and ask them to put the cards facedown on the table. Then slide your card out, and push the pile along to the next drafter.

u/Spahrep · 9 pointsr/pkmntcg

For example here's the history for RFTG.

u/Snarfleez · 1 pointr/boardgames

Of the games already submitted here, I think the best matches for you (from what I can suss from your question) would be:

  • Onitama - Scratches that chess itch, but plays in a really short timeframe. Lists at $23.79 on Amazon. You might even get 2-3 games in during lunch!

  • Red7 - You'll have to think about how to use the cards in this one. The rules can be "layered" on, and each one adds a level of complexity. Very cheap to buy (currently $6.90 on Amazon), and well worth it!
u/cheddarhead4 · 0 pointsr/boardgames

There are a lot of entry points. Which one is best will probably depend on your level of gamerness (if that's a word?).

If you don't do much tabletop gaming (or your only boardgames are from Hasbro), the D&D fifth edition starter set is a great place to start. Eventually, your group will have to get the DM Guide,, Player's Handbook, and maybe the Monster Manual after you finish the sessions from the starter set.

If you're more of a gamer, and you like min/maxing, let me recommend Pathfinder. It's an offshoot of the 3.5th edition of D&D (considered by many to be the heyday of D&D's systems. Here's their beginner box - the great thing about pathfinder is that after you finish that box, you don't need to buy anything. Ever again. there are resource pages all over the internet where all of the source material is available for free. (premade campaigns, you'll have to buy if you want to use them, though, but that's the same as D&D).

Another option if you're a starwars fan, is the new Star Wars RPG by fantasy flight. There are different source books and begginer boxes depending on if you want to focus your adventures around smugglers and normal folk on the edge of civilization or members of the rebellion

Other suggestion: Playing card holders.

They're helpful for children, elderly people, anyone with limited mobility or dexterity, and anyone who just doesn't like holding a giant fistfull of cards.

They come at every price point, from $7/4 (link) to $16/4 (link) to a full set of five walnut holders (and an extra, designed specially for TTR) for $50 (link).

I would be SUPER STOKED to get some as gifts, and there are cool DIY versions, too.

u/MeganOKeefe · 2 pointsr/Fantasy

I do a bit, but I haven't had time to play much the last few months. I'm more likely to indulge in a video game at the moment, and have been hooked on FTL lately (thank you, Steam sale!). It's more of a card game, but I really enjoy playing Once Upon a Time with my writers group. The point is to use the cards you've been dealt (characters, events, settings, etc) to turn the story around to your "ending". Watching a bunch of writers try to stretch the tale to make sense is hilarious.

Yes, I do. So does the rest of the world. Your taste buds are wrong, Ball, WRONG!

Ya if you have a bunch of friends and an active social life it's a really good game. Just like Snipperclips. I couldn't play it single player for more than 10 minutes, but me and the roommates got together and smoked some stuff and drank some stuff, and Snipperclips was the highlight of the night.

That and the Total Rickall game my buddy found.

u/TemptCiderFan · 2 pointsr/gaming

Go console. That budget is absolutely out of scope for PCs, especially with the current GPU market thanks to cryptocurrency inflation. For that price, you could easily get a dozen modern consoles...

That said, I would poll your fellow members and see if there's any interest in retro gaming. Grab a Wii or WiiU (or two) and some Mario Party, Mario Kart, etc titles. Grab a PS2 and some older fighting games.

Even if you have 20-25 active members, not everyone has to be playing games at the same time. You can set up games tournaments and rotating split-screen games.

Also: Board games. Set up a table so that you can get a board game going, and maybe invest in copies of Settlers of Catan, Axis and Allies, Risk, Blokus/Blokus Trigon, or even a couple sets each of Chess, Go, Stratego, etc.

Edit: Someone mentioned Magic The Gathering. If you're going to invest in that for the club, just go ahead and go HAM: You can buy randomized lots of 1000 commons for $14. Four of those bad boys will allow you to make up a shitload of pre-made decks of more or less equal utility, so you can do mystery tournaments.

u/ragno422 · 9 pointsr/pkmntcg

The Mewtwo vs Darkrai Battle Arena Deck is my favorite by far. It's balanced and fun, but not so advanced that it'd be intimidating for a newcomer. Plus if you decide you'd like to build your own competitive decks, you can use many of the cards in this deck to construct it, as it includes many necessary supporters. It's a little pricey on Amazon, but I've seen it for $30 at Barnes and Nobles and Target.

u/theteuth · 1 pointr/magicTCG

Yeah I wasn't really planning on getting rid of them. My brother and I recently started playing. I have a few hundred cards already from a while ago but he has none and has been using mine. This is just to give him a solid base of cards and add to my collection a bit. We will trade between the 2 of us, but that's about it. And like you said, it's only 16 bucks so it won't break my bank account. Here's the amazon page

u/Reginald__Cousins · 2 pointsr/boardgames

I have to bag, and I have to say my cards definitely would have lasted longer had they been in a box. Granted, the bag is charming, but the box actually would protect the cards during transportation.

>What makes roll-and-move an inherently bad concept?

You literally could replace the entire Monopoly board with a deck of cards and instead of Roll & Move just take cards off the top and deal with them. You might call it Monopoly Deal and it might achieve the same thoughtspace in 15 minutes and reduce Monopoly into a slightly charming filler game.

And before you ask, I've played Monopoly Deal, it still isn't my thing, but it's superior to the board game.

u/ocentertainment · 14 pointsr/rickandmorty

Not to diss if you just really like Monopoly (if so, enjoy!) but there are also a couple other Rick and Morty tabletop games that are, in my opinion at least, way more fun.

Mr. Meeseeks Box o Fun is a ridiculous dare game where you have to complete stupid tasks so Meeseeks can die. Reminds me a bit of Quelf, for anyone who's played that. $30: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BEZTAGE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_DQmvybHSP8YW7

Regardless, cool gift!

u/joahfx · 4 pointsr/c137

For anyone who hasn't seen or heard yet, you should get the Rick and Morty Card Game. You literally play out the events of this episode, and get to shoot your friends (in advanced mode at least, which youll end up finding more fun). I give it 9/10 for its price point on a party game.

u/dionos · 3 pointsr/magicTCG

For lands you can just buy a deck builder kit if you are really desperate for them. Or alternately you can buy them for usually 5 - 10 cents each like here.

edit: doing some quick math buying 24 of each land at .10 would be $12.00. At which point I would just pick up a deck builder's kit for $20 that comes with 20 of each land, 4 boosters, and some other random cards. Here is a link to it at amazon. Seems like a better value for the money.

That would be fun, though you might have to write that one yourself. Total Rickall and Mr. Meeseek's Box O Fun exist, though.

They have decks like these designed to learn the game:
https://www.amazon.com/Pokémon-TCG-Trainer-Lycanroc-Alolan/dp/B01N6TC9MD/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=pokemon+cards+starter+kit&qid=1573834186&sprefix=polemon+cards+s&sr=8-4

It’ll have two 30 card decks instead of the full 60 card deck so it’s quicker and usually the cards are less complicated. It will also come with a paper board... no board is needed once you know the game better though.

I will extend those so they're easier for our sausage fingers to click!

As expected, most are pretty poor. Here are a few people might consider.

u/mottom24 · 1 pointr/magicTCG

amazon has em for a bit cheaper than you would find them. But stores like Walmart and target usually have a few. My local card stores don't usually carry them, just fat packs.

u/apricity_ · 3 pointsr/boardgames

Race for the Galaxy is currently ~25 bucks, which is much cheaper than it usually is. It's been compared to games like San Juan and Puerto Rico.

u/Orphanleni · 1 pointr/boardgames

amazon I am acquainted with the guys at greater than games and I know for a fact that they wouldn't mind you purchasing from a major retailer.

u/mynameisdis · 1 pointr/boardgames

Seriously, I don't have all that many people to play with, but this is so tempting.

In other news, as many of you probably know, Race for the Galaxy is also only $20 on amazon.

u/boothismanbooooo · 5 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

Monopoly Deal is a completely different card-based game from Monopoly. https://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-B0965-Monopoly-Deal-Card/dp/B00NQQTZCO

When we play, we just flip the deck and start from the bottom.

u/rein00 · 1 pointr/Pathfinder_RPG

Oooh! Give them all amulets to hide their alignment, and don't let anyone tell anyone else what their alignment is!

It'll be like the Pathfinder version of Bang.

u/okkraa · 2 pointsr/RandomActsofMakeup

We are all about 2-player games! Off the top of my head, we love Quarriors and DC Deck Building Game. Both can be played with groups of people but also work well with just the two of us. (There's a Marvel Deck Building Game too, but the gameplay is completely different and not as fun in my opinion. It's similar to Sentinels of the Multiverse where the team is fighting together to beat the enemy.)

I'm assuming by 30-card starter pack, you're referring to one of those promo decks they give out at cons with commons and uncommons in them and a picture of a planeswalker on the deck box? If so, it's insane to lock into mono-blue just because of that. Especially now that you've purchased an entire box of product. If you're getting hung up about the lack of lands, get them from your friends that keep stomping you, or just head down to the local store and get a bunch for a dollar, or spring for a Deckbuilder's Toolkit.

u/wasser24 · 32 pointsr/boardgames

Not really the same vain, exactly, but since no one mentioned it, [Monopoly Deal] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NQQTZCO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Gn5DzbXT5PZD6) is way more fun than regular old Monopoly.

I would wait and buy it directly from amazon. I bought my copy from amazon for $15.00. I have no idea why MyQuickMart is charging $30.00.

Some other 3rd party sites have it for $10.00 but are currently sold out.

u/Mistress_Ella_Black · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This because I really like Rick & Morty along with games! 🤓

u/kintexu2 · 3 pointsr/magicTCG

No matter where you go, you won't get much for them. 1000 count boxes go for less than 20 on amazon (and that says it has rares and occasional mythics) and ebay. so you might get 20-25 bucks if you're lucky. If you throw it on ebay with the bidding started low I expect you would get someone to finish it around 15-20 most likely.

EDIT: places like starcitygames also buy bulk, but I do not know the rates.

u/tiny_changes · 2 pointsr/boardgames

I use these for games with a lot of cards as my hands get tired but they may work for your situation. They don’t bend the cards although the holder is slightly curved.

You might want to check out Deck Builders Toolkit. It's m13 but you will get plenty of basic lands, and other cards + boosters for 20$. Then you could use the other 20$ on dragon's maze boosters.

u/Le_Pyro · 1 pointr/magicTCG

I was planning to get this one, but since you're saying there isn't a 2012 one, should I hold off on it? Would you say just go for the fat pack instead?

u/tjn74 · 2 pointsr/mattcolville

Once Upon a Time has nothing to do with the tv show- the game was originally published in 1994 after all.

And the cookie is something I made up off of a variation of https://sweets.seriouseats.com/2013/12/the-food-lab-the-best-chocolate-chip-cookies.html

Only remove chocolate chips, and introduce caramel. But that recipe is gold, regardless.

u/RodJohnsonSays · 7 pointsr/boardgames

Give this darling a try.

No Thanks!

u/The_Squiv · 1 pointr/boardgames

There's someone selling it for $38.19 and Prime Eligible.

Here is a link to the event deck for OP

https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-2014-MODERN-Event/dp/B00IR2W4WA

With a 200$ budget he/she could already grab the rest of the Inquisitions they need and some thought seizes or lands.

Also for OP, http://www.hipstersofthecoast.com/modern-hero/ is an 8 week series where these guys bought the event deck and upgraded it over time. To give OP some idea of what to buy first.
