Hey everyone. Apologies for the blatant plug but seeing as we are talking about security Precautions for non-profits and journalists, it's probably relevant.

We built a tool specifically to help non-profits and journalists learn about and manage their digital and physical security. It's called Umbrella App. It's free, open source, on Android and contains tons of lessons on privacy related issues like digital and physical security. Umbrella has everything from how to do basic stuff like communicate with basic tools like Signal to sending a secure email with PGP. However, the unique bit is we also have stuff on the physical side, like how to plan travel, cross borders, set-up a secure physical meeting, deal with detecting surveillance, covering a protest, respond to a kidnapping etc. Basically we have tried to make it a bit of a one-stop-shop for security for regular people, activists, refugees and journalists. We also pull security feeds from places like the UN, Centres for Disease Control etc - which is obviously very important to folks in places like Syria or affected by Zika/Ebola.

There’s tons of really relevant stuff in it, especially for those now mobilising for the first time on some issues. Loads of people are writing guides that solve small parts of the puzzle but we have tried to provide the whole picture in the one place.

For lack of anything better that I can find, I use VueMinder Lite as a desktop calendar for my Windows machine. It syncs with my Google calendars (I have a few for different things), and it displays them all, prioritizing them based on which calendar I have showing, the mini or the full.

FWIW, Gadget-wise, I practically live on my Kindle Fire HD, 2nd Gen. Since I have an Android tablet and an Android phone, it's great that I can have apps that sync between the two. Granted, the Kindle can't get the Google apps (I haven't broken it... yet), but there are some apps that really, really make it worthwhile having the two.

The first is ColorNote. It's a free Notepad app, simple, but it syncs between your devices. You can password protect certain notes, if you want. You can color-code them, as the name implies, which has been more helpful than I would have thought. You can sort by name, or date added, or date accessed. You can do simple notes, or checklists. I have no idea what the character limits are on these, because I have written HUGE documents in them, and have yet to reach a character limit. I use this app constantly.

Another app I use is CountyPlus. Yeah, I use this for knitting, shut up. I'm sure it can have other uses. It costs $1.52 on the Amazon store, but it was worth it. For you crafters out there, this is perfect for tracking multiple counters in one project, and tracking counters for ALL of your projects. It also syncs with your Ravelry projects, or at least, imports the names. Sadly, the counters do not sync across multiple devices. Regardless, I've used this for when I want to keep a tally of other things as well, not just knitting stuff, like when I'm counting members of The Silence I've seen around me.

The other big app that my husband and I use all the time is Glympse. It shares our location and ETA with the other, and whoever else we want to send a Glympse to. You can send a Glympse to anyone's cellphone (with data capabilities) or email address - they do not need to have the app to receive and view a Glympse. If they have the app, they have the option of opening it in the app, but if they don't, the Glympse opens in a browser window. There's no need to call and say, "Where are you?" or to call and say, "I'm stuck in traffic," because you can easily see where the other is traveling and at what speed through the Glympse. You can choose how long it'll run, and you can choose to have it expire when you want it to, so it doesn't always track you.

Ok, just got home and did a little searching.

I guess first of all, what are you rooting for? Do you just want to install the google apps so you have access to the Play marketplace or are you trying to install a new ROM? I know everyone has to start somewhere to learn, but maybe you should experiment with rooting a different device that is easier to recover from errors in case you run into problems. Kindles are not exactly easy to fix if you hit a snag.

Anyway, I have no experience with installing a different ROM on my Kindle. I've custom ROMed all my phones, but the HDX is a bit of a special case, so I didn't want to go in too deep yet. I rooted so I could have access to Google Play and replace Silk with Chrome. If that is all you are looking for, it's pretty easy to root and install HDXPosed and the Google Services, but using the HDX Toolkit to disable OTA updates is a little tricky.

Anyway, start with downloading ES File Explorer. You will need it installed to be able to install the Towelroot APK.

Go here for information about Towelroot, then go here for HDXPosed and links to the Google Services once you have sucessfully rooted with Towelroot.

Once you have HDXPosed installed and the Google Services running, you can use the HDX Toolkit to disable OTA updates so your Kindle won't automatically update and (best case) lose root or (worst case) brick itself. HDXPosed is supposed to disable OTA updates, but I've heard it doesn't work properly and I didn't want to take any chances.

You can always reverse the process (make sure Wifi is turned off and no cell service) and uninstall everything and re-enable OTA updates if you need to update for some reason later. I know the HDX Toolkit is supposed to be able to root your Kindle as well, but I found that using Towelroot is much easier.

If you are looking for information about installing custom ROMs, then go here for Safestrap and good luck!

    1. probably, but way too complicated to do it this way and nobody really has put that much effort into making an app to do all. If you find a way, good luck.
    1. see number 1
    1. see number 1
    1. if it all was possible, then you would use this program to make things happen. Also try Downloader. Its much easier to navigate.
    1. depends on your connection, the add-on you use and/or the health of the stream. Yes, subtitles can be downloaded from the stream. I think it still depends on the add-on you are using to stream tho.

It doesn't look like it. There doesn't even seem to be any apps in general in the Amazon Appstore for blank screens. Their Appstore does have an app to make black screens, but it's only for phones that have a proximity sensor. Other than that, nothing looks on point.

But sideloading an apk is pretty easy and pretty common, because the Amazon Appstore has so many glaring gaps in content. So you shouldn't be concerned -- especially for an APK that's less than a megabyte in size.

u/NorthYeg · 2 pointsr/starcitizen

May I recommend GIC? Its free, open source, and should do exactly what you are looking for. It's available on Amazon app store and google play (or Github if you want to compile yourself!)

I don't know how to share a link from the amazon app store on my phone since I'm not using that store - once home and off the bus I'll try and edit this with the direct link, but just search for "gaming interface client". If you need any assistance I'm the author and I'm here to answer any questions. It's new so still a bit rough but I'm actively working on it - customized buttons is next on my list, then fonts and sharing the screens you create after that.

I'm not sure where you found firedl but I've never seen it mentioned anywhere I always see apps2fire mentioned on the ftv sub. Give that a try it's probably a better option. You could also try the downloader app for your ftv, it's made by the AFTVnews guys and seems to work pretty well.

*Edit: You also have to turn on ADB in your settings on the FTV as well.

You know it sucks when this is the description:

>The OJO 500 Windows Mixed Reality Headset is the most innovative device in its class. Its patented sound-pipe technology focuses sound directly at the ears and the patented Interpupillary Distance technology ensures that the display is set at the optimal distance from your eyes. It's also been designed to easily keep clean and transport.

Sound, IPD and easy to clean are the highlights

BTW, that IPD app ISN'T the only one:

You need to use mouse toggle to help with this.

Mouse Toggle is not easy to see, but you can make it work. When you get the config file page, start at the upper right. Get there by hold the the up and right on the directional pad for about 5 seconds. You have to play around with this until you see a selection light up. Once you can see that, work your way to the menu on the left.

I suggest installing Total Commander as that may help with any permission issues on copying the config. I was able to make it work a few times last week on a few more firesticks. Thanks to Alex from this post.

Hope this helps. I have done about 15 firesticks now. It can be tedious to work with Mouse Toggle, but it gets the job done.

Instructions on how to boycott Google:

For Search

--------------

  • Use Bing, or better yet use DuckDuckGo

Desktop / Laptop / Windows Linux Mac etc

    ----------------

  • Do not use Google Chrome. Use Firefox with Ublock Origins installed. This will effectively keep Google from monetizing any of your internet traffic.
  • For office you can use Libreoffice. If you need to work online you can try Zoho or use Microsoft's online version. Either OneDrive of Office 365.

    Mobile Smartphone / Tablet

    ----------------

  • If you are on an Android phone install Cyanogenmod. Do not install any google services. You may need to DuckDuckSearch a guide but it is a lot easier than you think.
  • For an appstore, you can use Amazon or APKCure.com
  • For amobile browser do not use Chrome. Use Firefox with Ublock Origin installed.
  • If you must visit YouTube, do so only using the above browser with the mentioned Ublock (adblock) enabled, this will prevent Google from getting revenue from your visit. Yes, YouTube works fully Firefox mobile.
  • For a Google Docs competitor, try Zoho or sign up for a Bing account and use Microsoft's version.
  • On iPhone/Pad, just don't use Google products. Apple has decent alternatives.

[inserts info and links to the Meter Apps as suggested by the slate.com article]

From the article:

>Various apps that can perform the scans for you; Barker recommends Angry IP Scanner, NetworkMapper, and Network Scanner by First Row. In his Ireland Airbnb, Barker used Network Scanner for the network scan and NetworkMapper for the port scan, but most apps have both features.
>
>Network scans generally allow users to view the IP addresses and manufacturers of devices connected to the Wi-Fi. In Barker’s case, the manufacturer of the hidden recording device was literally listed as “IPCAMERA.” Once you have the list, it’s a good idea to work backward. “You should in theory be able to tick off each device found through the scan to a device you are aware of and can physically see,” Barker wrote.
>
>If you see a device that looks suspicious, a port scan can help to identify its purpose. The scan will list the different ports for connecting to the device and the services they provide. The services will be listed as short codes; a Google search will generally reveal what the codes mean. For example, the code RDP indicates that users can remotely control the desktop of the computer. The codes RTMP and RTSP are for video streaming.
>
>These sorts of scans will only work if your device and the camera are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If the camera is on a different network, or if it stores the footage on an internal hard drive, you’ll have a harder time finding it. For more details on how the scans work, check out the guide that Barker wrote for travelers after his Airbnb incident.
>
> When you enter a room, you should check around to see if anything looks out of place. “These things tend to stand out like a sore thumb,” says Dan Tentler, founder and CEO of Phobos Group, a cybersecurity firm. For example, he recommends checking to see whether there are inexplicably two smoke detectors in the same room.
>
>Holding an object in your hands can also help to determine whether it’s fake. “If there’s a can of Mountain Dew randomly sat on the kitchen counter … and you walk up and pick up the can, you’re going to immediately know that it’s a hidden camera,” says Tentler. Look for reflections when you shine a light on objects, which may reveal the presence of a lens.
>
>If and when you find such a device, make sure to alert Airbnb or the hotel. You might also want to inform law enforcement, especially if you’re in a state where two-party consent is required for recording. “If you find a camera, take pictures of it,” says Tentler. “Make noise, post pictures of the thing on the internet, on Twitter.”

It's a shame that people are this creepy so as to do these kinds of things. Good thing we have this info to stop this.

Have you tried the Android "Amazon Fire tv" app? http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Fire-TV-Remote-App/dp/B00ODIASKC

Nevermind, found these instructions for Kindle. I think it may be similar for the fire stick....

  1. Skip the initial configuration you get to when first powering up your Kindle Fire HD(X)
  2. Slide down from the top of the screen to get the quick menu and click on Setup (the gear icon)
  3. My company WiFi is hidden, so I scroll down to the 'Join Other Network' icon and tap it
  4. Again, since my company WiFi is hidden, I enter in the name for it under Network SSID
  5. For the Security drop-down, I select 802.1x EAP. The resulting options may seem intimidating, but I was able to ignore many of them and leave them at their defaults.
  6. I chose PEAP for EAP Method, and skipped Phase 2 Auth, CA Cert, and User cert.
  7. I entered my username under identity, and skipped Anonymous identity.
  8. I entered in my network password in the password field and clicked Save.
  9. It connected immediately.
  10. After about 20 seconds I tested in the Silk browser and everything works perfectly.
  11. Don't forget to go back and Register your device now that you are on WiFi!! (Settings, My Account, Register.)
u/royeiror · 2 pointsr/oneplus

You can add a VNC server, and as Luck would have it, Amazon has it for free. Check Servers Ultimate Pro and download the pack when prompted. Also you could use TeamViewer QuickSupport I have both installed ona an Android Stick and for QS you need to authorize control, for VNC you don't.

u/scoopzmcghee · 2 pointsr/ApksApps

No idea on the memory capacity. I don't see it on your Amazon links so you'll probably have to check the manuals/guides on each manufacturer's website.

Sideloading APKs is easy. If you're somewhat tech savvy the entire process takes 10-15 minutes.

You'll need the direct URL of the APK you want to install (eg www.whatever.com/app.apk) and the Downloader app and the VLC app from the Amazon App store on your TV. The Downloader app handles both the download and installation processes for you.

  • Launch the Amazon app store on your TV.
  • Search for and install the Downloader and VLC app.
  • Launch the Downloader app, type in your APK's URL and download it.
  • Navigate to the download location.
  • Select and install your APK.
  • Launch your app and when you find the TV episode or movie link you want to stream, play with VLC.

    Edit: Formatting.
u/xenyz · 2 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

If you don't have root access, the best you can do is force stop all apps besides Kodi that you are not using.

A handy app someone made and put on the Amazon app store is called Background apps & process list

It has the ability to cycle though the app info screen for all running user apps, so you can click on Force stop on each one quickly.

This will give you the max amount of memory possible for Kodi, and hopefully it's enough to keep it running when it goes to the background.

u/Marcellus111 · 0 pointsr/fireTV

I moved files back and forth lots of times using ES Explorer. Open the app on both your phone and your stick, select the file on your stick and choose the "send" option, which will pull up all other devices on your LAN with the app open and let you select which device to send the file to. It's pretty easy.

u/lord_dumbello · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

I don't believe Czech (or Slovak) languages for the keyboard are supported. They are there but Amazon removes the settings options you need to change in order to get them. You might be able to replace the stock keyboard with something like Swype which I think lets you then use any language.

u/shatheid · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

Yup. There's even an official app w/ voice search. I completely forgot about it tbh, good call. Its on the play store as well, even though I used the Amazon App store link.

It also has Amazon's take on casting called "Flick." But it was just coming out last I used it, and not many apps had implemented it yet. No idea where that stands now.

u/TheSilentLink · 2 pointsr/jellyfin

So you want to copy the files to the local storage on the Firetv over the network?

You can do this with ES File Explorer.

You will have to share the files over the network though. That is the only way to... share files over the network.

Business Calendar, it's paid so maybe you might not want it. I got it when it was app of the day on Amazon, and I like it.

u/i_is_smart · 2 pointsr/fireTV

another alternative if nothing else works is using the "total commander" app. it will remain listed in the recent apps.

install it and launch kodi/spmc. then as long as you do not close or restart the firetv/app, kodi/spmc will be the selected option the next time you launch total commander.

link to app on amazon appstore.

this to me is a better alternative than going to settings, managaged installed apps, LOADING APP TIME, scrolling down to kodi, enter, lauch app.

It may be related to something like this:

https://www.androidpit.com/this-is-why-you-should-not-use-es-file-explorer

Two Amazon-approved apps that I think are essential for FireTV are Downloader and Total Commander.

If you get both, there is little need for ES File Explorer.

u/clonetheory · 1 pointr/Addons4Kodi

The same addons work with SPMC, the ones I use anyway. SPMC is designed for Android, and includes extra code/fixes to get the best out of the Fire Stick/TV. SPMC is available here. I don't know the current source for Not Sure. As for setting up, use the app Downloader to download SPMC.

Oh hey, there are some good apps in here! Business Calendar 2's pro features get unlocked if you have Business Calendar installed. It's a really good Material designed calendar, and the only one I could find with a fully functional month widget that actually lists out the event titles rather than the infuriating little color blocks that other calendars have.
