Same situation, and same reason I have front and rear cameras on my car now. Buddy he was driving my car, very thoughtfully called a cab instead of driving. Was waiting for it to show up in my car since it was driving rain, my keys were in his pocket, but he got charged with a DUI. Lawyer was able to get the whole thing thrown out, but then again, you still are out the time and money for the legal trouble, so they are still getting some money for nothing from you. Amd I had to pay the tow company to get my car out of impound. Once I started doing Uber on the side, I have cameras I got in a kit as a rearview, dash cam, and inside the car dash cam, best investment ever.

So far the only benefit I have gotten is calming down a road rage incident, but it came with a sticker for my rear-view window and both police and civilians definitely act a little more maturely driving around you knowing they are on camera. Which, by the way, is thankfully completely legal in my state. Even the police definitely act a little more mature driving around you knowing they are on camera. Which, by the way, is thankfully completely legal in my state. Even the police can be recorded as long as I'm not filming an
"active investigation". I don't advocate wrongdoing but protect yourself, the car cams are a great investment.

Edit. Everyone is asking for my camera set-up, yes, I know it's a bit sloppy, but I'm not an electrician and I got all the harnesses and attached them to an EXTERNAL BATTERY. Your standard car battery is NOT meant to regularly handle this voltage, especially with the engine off.

Again, consult somebody good with cars (like I did), or a pro. This equipment CAN fry your car. Scoff at the price, but 3 days of Uber paid it all off, and a case of beer got it installed :) Highly recommend the night vision option, the infrared is incredible on this, it even helps pick deer out when the snow was falling. I love the passive monitoring, basically all the features are worth setting up, such a good fallback to have video evidence.

The stickers I got came with the backup camera and are color versions of this: https://www.ebay.com/i/162030654741?chn=ps

> Momento MD-6200 M6 ($300 USD)

  • Wi-Fi enabled Full HD (1080p) dash camera system including front camera, rear camera, GPS antenna, and 32GB micro-SD memory card - GPS doesn't really matter, Pretty standard everything else. 32 GB Micro SD card is sort of on the small side.

  • Exceptional Low-light Sensitivity - This could be true, but text doesn't really tell you much about it.

  • Driving Mode - Continuously records everything at the front and rear of your vehicle while driving - This is every 2 Channel (Front/Rear) dash cam pretty much.

  • Impact Sensors - Stores 15 seconds before and after any impact or shock your vehicle experiences - This is every dash cam pretty much. G sensor (Hits/Bumps) event recording, and G sensor in parking mode. Also this is Buffered recording - Able to record a few seconds before and after G sensor activation (Like a time machine.)

  • Parking Mode - Even when you're parked, the M6 has motion sensors that trigger recordings. - Motion sensor (movement in front of the camera lens).

  • Suction mount Enables simple mounting. - This is not preferred Adhesive mount is.

    ---

  • Video quality Day/Night/Shadow/Rain ect - So this is sample footage from Memento it self, but the thing I pull from it mostly, is that they miss configured the dash cam.

Sky = Bright, Ground = Dark.

They placed the dash cam like it is a GPS device, low in the window, and pointed it up towards the sky.

This means the dash cam will focus on the sky, and set light setting for the sky. = Dark Ground/People/Cars/ect.

Better configuration would be: 55% ground, 45% sky, and placing the dash cam up and out of the eye line of the driver, passenger side behind the rear view mirror, or further over on the passenger side out of the way.

  • M6 = Not Discreet - Not Matt Black, Looks like a camera - Causes people to touch it, and play with it, and miss configure it. - This is a huge negative as your passengers will play with it, and disable it.

  • M6 = Not discreet - Silver rings might look cool, but attract the attention of: Thieves/Police/Other drivers - All things you wish to minimize.

  • M6 = ($300 USD) - Way over priced for what it is.

I didn't even rate Build quality, or parking mode really.

    -------

    > I just want a well built 2 channel dash cam with excellent build quality and features.

So the difference between Excellent and Fair build quality dash cams - my ratings, is actually very thin.

However, Poor build quality dash cams - stand out.

    > I don't care about the specs per se, I care more about video quality than anything else.

So you can do 2x 1 Channel dash cams, and cover Front/Rear.

  • 2x Dash cam + 2x Micro SD card + 2x Hardwire kit (make sure rear hardwire kit is longer) = Cost

  • 1x 2 Channel dash cam + 1x Micro SD card + 1x Hardwire kit = Cost

    ---

    1 Channel (Front Only)

  • B1W ($47-55 USD) - Cheap, affordable, good video quality dash cam.

  • A119 v2 ($79-105 USD) - 2nd best video quality dash cam on the market.

  • A119 v3 ($110-120 USD) - Best video quality dash cam on the market.

    2 Channel (Front/Rear)

  • A129 Duo ($150-170 USD)

  • VIOFO A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD)

    2 Channel Uber cam (Front/Interior)

  • B2W ($112-140 USD)

  • VIOFO A129 IR 2CH ($170-180 USD)

    ---

Most of this is copy pasta so it might be hard to follow:

    Comparison of footage:

    ---

  • A119 v3 Day/Night/Shadow footage

    vs

  • A129 Day / Night footage

    ---

The A129 Duo ($150-170 USD) shares some of the same hardware as the A119S v2.

The A119S v2 failed to surpass the A119 v2 in video quality, except extremely dark conditions. - However, the A129 Duo is an affordable, reliable, Good enough video quality, Front/Rear dash cam. - Except video quality is much lower than A119 v2, or A119 v3.

    ---

What would be a more fair comparison would be: A119 v2, or A119 v3 vs A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD)

  • A119 v2 ($80-100 USD) Day/Night/Shadow footage

  • A119 v3 ($110-120 USD) Day/Night/Shadow footage

  • A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD) Day/Night/Shadow footage

    ---

    Between the two:

  • 2x A119 v3 ($110-120 USD), or

  • 1x A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD)

I think I would pick the A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD) - for the reasons you outlined. - However it is a new dash cam and lacks long term reviews. - I like VIOFO's products, but all new dash cams should be viewed with suspicion.

    ---

So it depends where your price point is, and how much you value video quality.

    ---

    > two separate wirings/plugs

After you have done a bunch of dash cams, 1x 2 Channel dash cams, is very similar to 2x 1 Channel dash cams.

Only difference really is price structure:

  • 1x Dash cam + 1x Hardwire kit + 1x Micro SD card = 2 Channel dash cam costs

  • While: 2x Dash cam + 2x Hardwire kit (long) + 2x Micro SD card = 2x 1 Channel dash cams costs.

Depends on how skilled you are. I installed a backup camera in mine as it didn’t have the tech package either. It was pretty easy. If you can install a radio you can do this.

I bought this camera Moonet Car CCD Backup Rearview Camera for Nissan-370Z 350-Z Waterproof Night Vision https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J21TNTW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Ln5GAb3WS5H49

and it pops right in with the factory bulb and all

Then a mirror screen like this

Zone Tech 4.3 Inch TFT Car Auto LCD Screen Rear Monitor View Rearview DVD AV Mirror https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ANRCX1Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Io5GAb7PEDJK4

All you do is connect the power for the camera and the mirror to one of the positives on the reverse light and you’re good to go. Mine works fantastic. I added a splitter and a 3 position switch so i have a front parking camera too just for fun. But the idea is the same. The backup camera I’d recommend to anyone. It comes with parking lines albeit you gotta get use to them because they don’t necessarily line up with where the car will back up into, but you can get use to the lines as reference points.

As for Nav, i put this in

Infiniti 75130509 G35 Sedan 07~08, G35 Coupe 08~11, G37 08~12, EX 08~12, FX 09~12, G25 2011 Mount for Cell Phones/GPS and other Small Electronics in Car/Truck https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004BVKW2K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_0q5GAbJARV0TZ

it’s super easy instructions all you need is a Phillips and a small flathead. I personally prefer my phone for nav because it’s updated, nice, traffic, easier to type and use. Plus i don’t use my phone while driving so it’s either on the mount being used for nav or off and playing music

Then this magnetic phone mount lets you stick and remove your phone from the mount super fast and easy.

Universal Magnetic Phone Holder, FITFORT 360°Rotation Magnetic Car Mount Holder for Cell Phone GPS Tablet iPhone X 8 7 6s 6 Plus Galaxy S8,S7,S6 Edge,Note 8, 5, 4 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07541F5Y8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Kr5GAb6AV1VCS

I didn’t have much choice for my car to be picky because the 6mt sedans are so rare and this one was $4k and thankfully i was the first person to contact the seller or else i would still be kicking myself. I’m pretty handy and cheap so i add whatever feature i want into my car.

u/SexaCuti0n3r · 3 pointsr/Autos

I use the Itronics ITB-70G Black Box Dash Cam but it's far from perfect. Once the SD card starts to fill up, the camera has issues recording and will skip up to 5 minutes or so intervals of traveling. Normally when the SD card fills up, it will replace the oldest video and continue recording but this creates the aforementioned issue. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the SD card they supply or the device itself. Clearing the SD card before it fills up alleviates this issue, though. So if you don't mind clearing out the SD card every week or so, then the device isn't so bad.

Also, the software provided doesn't support Windows 7 64 bit operating system or Mac OS. The software is mainly used to change the settings of the camera (video quality, sound, etc.) and to see the GPS locations of the videos. You can still view the videos by viewing the contents of the SD card and opening them in video playing software (Windows Media Player, VLC).

Now for some of the good aspects to this device. It was very easy to install and the small form factor makes this device discrete and will not obstruct your view. I installed it towards the top of the windshield behind my rear view mirror and ran the wiring along the top then down the sides and hooked it up to the cigarette lighter. Once installed, you won't have to worry about touching the device to record. It will power up when you turn the car on/start the engine but it takes a couple of seconds to initially turn on (5-10 seconds). Once the car is turned off, the device turns off as well. I believe there is a low power consumption setting you can turn on so it will record even after you turn off the car. I have not tested this out myself since I don't want to risk a dead battery.

The video quality? Lets just say don't expect to recover license plate numbers, street names, road signs, etc. from the footage. It's just for evidence purposes to prove so and so did this. Here's a clip from an altercation I witness the other week. This is the raw clip uploaded to YouTube that I just trimmed using their video editor using the highest quality settings available on the camera. (I don't have a night time clip but here's a clip from a different YouTube user.) By default, the camera records in one minute intervals but I believe that can be adjusted in the software.

If you want the device to retain a certain recording, you can press a button on the device and it will save the clips from 3 minutes prior as well as 3 minutes afterwards (or however long you want it to be, this can be altered in the software) and they won't be overwritten. In the event of an accident, the device detects sudden acceleration or deceleration through its impact sensor and will retain the footage automatically. The sensitivity of the impact sensor can be adjusted in the software if need be.

Whoa, didn't expect this post to be this long. Anyways, I felt that this camera would meet your needs so I posted it but gave some extra information. So if you don't mind the SD card issue and the $200 price tag, go for it. If I wasn't clear with something in my review or you have any other question, feel free to ask.

Pioneer AVIC-W8400NEX.

It can be found on amazon for $694 right now. I’m pretty sure there are cheaper options but I’ve always hated the resistive touch screens; capacitive touch was why I got this one (along with wireless ACP.)

I bought a special harness to retain use of my steering wheel controls and adapt it specifically for my 9-3; it would work for yours too. It ships from Europe. You could possibly source all the components individually, but this was easier. The harness allows you to use your steering wheel controls, tie into the factory amp, bypass the parking brake requirements (auto only), and reverse gear (auto only). Also, by tying into the factory amp, you get the power from the unit and the cars amp and can push upgraded speakers much easier.

Yes, did the complete install myself. It really wasn’t that bad. I used this guide to get started. It really helped with my confidence before dropping money on all the parts

The most time consuming part was getting the signal right for my backup cam and making it work with my 6MT; it’s plug and play with an auto. This was much more expensive than other options but was essentially best on the market for my use. Weather resistant, 1/3” sensor that’s really low light capable so you don’t need additional lights, extremely small footprint and installs easily. Also, you can take it apart to simply mount it using the top two bolts, which is what I did.

I did install all the options that came along with the unit. Microphone, GPS, aux, etc. But I also installed an HDMI adapter to play movies from my phone (android has mirror cast, but personally, I prefer the reliability of a hard-wired connection. Additionally, I installed a parking brake by-pass for the unit. This is simple, and cheap, but not needed for automatic transmissions.

The whole package ended up costing me about $1200…But hey, wireless carplay/android auto is worth it considering there are only around 8 new cars on the market coming with it in 2020…

u/Proximanity · 1 pointr/f150

I have this license plate mounted camera on my super crew and I love it. You can't see the far ends of your bumpers though, which isn't as bad as you might think. This is what I have and it satisfies me. If I had a camper shell I would mount it to the top side of it for best visibility.

Camera was included with a boss audio radio I purchased, I didn't include the radio here because my model has some bugs. You can easily find a touch screen radio replacement or a dedicated screen and still be in your price range.

u/ohbugger · 2 pointsr/GoRVing

haha, ok, quick version:

- you need two of the "backup cameras" that have two cables, 12v dc jack and rca video

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018800TR2/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_mlkUCbNWR7JRR

- you need a wireless transmitter/receiver

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0755W578J/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_ykkUCbD4WXJ0G

- and a lcd display up front

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C7KKVW7/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_jmkUCbVRA5WVG

One camera is mounted on the back of the trailer facing the road

One camera is mounted on the trailer tongue jack facing down at the hitch

An RCA Y-splitter joins the two camera video cables and feeds it to the wireless transmitter

the 12v+ power is connected to a switch (on1-off-on2) on1 sends power to camera1, off is off, on2 sends power to camera2

In your vehicle connect the receiver and display.

When it is time to hitch up, flip the power to the tongue jack camera, backup confidently being able to see yourself place the ball right under the hitch

Get out, hitch up, flip the switch to the rear camera and now enjoy seeing behind the trailer while driving.

Note, put the transmitter up by the tongue jack camera so that you minimize the distance the wireless signal needs to transmit.

Good luck, it's an awesome system.

u/lagger · 2 pointsr/Charlotte

It's actually pretty old (2013). Thankfully I've never actually needed to use it. It is the FINEvu PRO - I don't know if it is even sold anymore. Dashcams are pretty cheap these days though. Definitely peace of mind driving around here with all awesome NC drivers.

u/Bushwacker2020 · 3 pointsr/ToyotaTundra

Only had it for three days, but I have plans.

  1. Switching out the cloth seats for leather in the next couple weeks. Doing this at the dealer.

  2. Adding a front camera via the FRAC harness. Considering this camera, but open for suggestions - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H852D49/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_77WmDbEQ7CB8X

  3. Adding a couple usb outlets in the back - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F84VVB4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Z9WmDb0HXGEXB

  4. Remote Start - but don’t know which one yet. Would like to be able to use the stock key/remote.

  5. Leveling - I’d like to level it, but tbh, I’ve never done it before and I’m worried about the downsides, impact to steering and safety sense, or going nose up, when I pull a trailer or carry a load. For normal driving though, I really like the leveled look.

  6. Gull wing truck box - don’t know which one yet.

Just getting started, so appreciate any suggestions or ideas. Can’t break the bank, but trying to add functionality. Love to add the supercharger, but $8K isn’t in the cards!😜

I have a BlackVue DR550GW-2CH as a dashcam (I have it for around 4 years, installed originally in another 2 cars).

Intsun Vehicle Rear View Monitor (you clip it to your rear view mirror) cost me $20-25 in Amazon (it has 2 video inputs but I am using one). This works by detecting video signal on the channel and turning it on. You hook the backup camera to the reverse lights in order to show up every time you go in reverse.

And a License Frame with a Rear View Camera eSky Viewing Universal License Camera $40.

Installed on a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic. Works wonders and you can't even tell it's an addon. Looks OEM.

My GF's 2013 Scion FR-S got a DR650GW-2CH as a dashcam and a Pioneer AVH-280BT ($180) and a $15 backup camera that looks like the OEM for the car.

Works great too but the wiring on that is a little difficult. It needs to be wire to the fuse box.

Pretty happy with the result.

I have the Atoto A6 with backup camera and front camera.

Really good, kinda wish the Pro was out when I bought it last year.
I used this backup camera off amazon. LOVE IT.
Fits perfectly into the license plate light , sleek and hardly noticable. I can snap a pic later tonight

https://www.amazon.ca/Camera-Nissan-Versa-Pulsar-Infiniti/dp/B07MTY368Q/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=backup+camera+nissan&qid=1559002672&s=gateway&sr=8-5

u/TimelessNY · 6 pointsr/vandwellers

Once you install one camera, you'll be shocked how easy it is. It will feel like sorcery. The hardest part is choosing how to get the wires from the camera inside. Here is the kit I used for my backup camera which I mounted in the third brake light and conveniently passed the wires through there. The purpose of this post is to show members that you can have a functional 2 camera system for less than $100.

Camera

Monitor

Extra cable I needed this to run the entire length of my van.

This monitor supports two cameras. I got some wago connectors from my job and spliced into the wire for the passenger reading light. This connection is always hot so I additionally added a circuit switch I picked up from autozone.

To add a second camera, I would just need to buy the camera. I am thinking of mounting something like this on the bottom of the passenger side mirror, to assist with parallel parking. I imagine that would also serve your purpose. Again, the hardest part is getting the wires inside :)

As far as monitoring outside, if you find yourself in a precarious situation it is best to just get in the driver's seat and leave if things escalate. The fact that you can see them on your camera means nothing.

u/Semyonov · 10 pointsr/TalesFromThePizzaGuy

I'll hijack your comment so OP sees.

I used to drive for pizza delivery, and got a dashcam while I was doing so.

The one I have is a bit on the pricy side, but it has better night vision than I do and records in 1080p and 60 FPS.

Here is a link. It's unavailable on Amazon but I'm sure it can be found on Ebay too.

It's very nice quality.

u/FecesInYourFaces · 1 pointr/MINI

I did something very similar but used a $39 AV WiFi transmitter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076D556WL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_LyFPAbYVYH42V) I tapped the license plate light as a power source and mounted the transmitter within the hatch lid so it’s completely self contained with no exposed wires. I can post pics if anyone’s interested. The camera that comes with that license plate light is too narrow for my liking.. I might try replacing it with something with a wider field of view. The picture quality is pretty low too, good enough for backing up I guess. I’d love to use it as a rear DVR in the future.

u/chaseoes · 1 pointr/Truckers

Phone is probably the cheapest option if you don't want to opt for a some kind of a standalone screen.

I was thinking something DIY like this + this, but here's something else that looks like it combines both of those and could be a good option.

You may look into this I have not done much research on it myself but could be the easiest solution I've seen.
PAC RPK5-GM4101 Chevrolet Camaro Integrated Radio Replacement Kit 2010-15 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M056PCV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_EDF2BbCB94VZX

After the last two accidents, I've finally picked the riorand as my best option.

As soon as I go in for maintenance, I'm having it hard wired in my car.
If there is a better option, I'm open to looking at it.

Quick note that if you want to spend somewhat more, you can get aftermarket versions of those "around view" birds eye cameras off amazon. The install is more complicated but it turns parking into an easy mode game

I've never purchased one of these since my Silverado came with a back up camera but if I didn't I was going to purchase one of these:

Esky 170° Viewing Angle Universal Car License Plate Frame Mount Rear View Camera, Waterproof High Sensitive 8 IR LED https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GMC8QXI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_SitVzbDDENY3T

Never had anyone I know purchase one of these but it seems pretty practical for trailer purposes. I believe it connects to to your phone wirelessly.

Edit: I'm not sure how or if it could work, but you could buy two. One for the truck and one for the trailer.

What about something like this? Should keep things well away from the car's cameras.

Here's the DOD LS300W that he is using...super nice quality

You can. I’ve added one to my 2013 WRX.

It is one of the most difficult installs you can do though, and I doubt many shops will do it.

I used:
https://www.amazon.com/Weivision-Degree-System-Panoramic-Camera/dp/B0105XR91O/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=weivision+1080p+super+hd+360+degree+bird+view+system+panoramic&qid=1562641655&s=gateway&sprefix=weivis&sr=8-1&utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app

Properly connected, hazard lights turn on the front camera, reverse turns on the rear camera, and turn signals turn on lane change cameras. All views have the Birdseye mode.

For the head unit, you can swap to:
Dasaita 10" Android 9.0 Bluetooth Car Stereo Head Unit with 4G RAM/ 64G ROM for Toyota RAV4 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Car Radio Touch Screen GPS Navigation Dash Kit Built in DSP 15Band EQ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RT47S7F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7uajDb1H6YDD0

Which imo makes the factory one look like hot garbage. The CarPlay dongle costs an extra $100 though. Good upgrade for non-factory CarPlay models though.

The radio is plug and play. Harness’ are specific made for the RAV4 and connect right up.

works fine, i wouldn't pay too much for a camera.

Have you seen this one?

I've heard really good things about it.... but that's $300 for a radio install kit. Yeah....

A cursory search yielded this camera on Amazon: http://amzn.com/B004ASMDA8

Sometimes it does this sort of glitchy stuff, sometimes the video feed just dies. This is the camera that I have

I have the power connected to the accessory 12V in the center console of the car because I want to use this as a rear view "mirror" sometimes

What camera do you use for the rear? I also have a Kenwood, was looking at this one.

The stock radio it had wasn't a touch screen, but I bought the PAC RPK5-GM4101 to keep the OEM feel/look while still being able to add an aftermarket double-DIN head unit.

u/ArsenioDev · 2 pointsr/halo

Suggestion for a future Gungnir helmet, use one of those cheap car backup cameras Here and hooking it up to a small LCD like this and using that to see through?

u/daytimeLiar · 1 pointr/Hyundai

Haven't tried it. Will try it today.

What do you mean they don't have the same connector? Can't I connect something like https://www.amazon.com/Esky-Universal-Waterproof-Sensitive-Wirecutters/dp/B00GMC8QXI to the existing head unit?
