I've always liked and had best luck with Pioneer, you'll probably want a double DIN unit as that will fit better. You can order from Crutchfield and they include the front bezel and wire harness, but you can also find head units cheaper elsewhere and buy the install kit from Crutchfield separate.

Bonus, I believe all of the double DIN Pioneer units with touchscreens work with backup cameras, which you can find on Amazon for $15 or so. The cheapest one currently is the AVH-P1400, they go up in price to the AVH-P8400

If you want navigation you can add that on to the more expensive models, but they also have navigation units.

They also have the cool App Radio, which works great if you have an iPhone, works with Android too but not as well.

As for speakers, yeah I'd switch those out too. I'm fond of Polk Audio myself. Head to crutchfield.com, put in your car and they'll list the various speaker sets that will fit. Component speakers generally sound better than coaxial, but again it all depends on your budget and anything you put in there should give you better sound than the stock radio and speakers. If you buy from crutchfield they include any adapters to use the stock wiring making it simple plug and play.

Actually thinking about it, the base doesn't have tweeters so you'll probably be better getting coaxial speakers.

Just know you don't have to do it all at once, you can get the head unit, then add speakers on in a few months, or vice versa.

Dash cams make sooo much sense. I highly recommend them, and with this crowd, that recommendation might not fall on deaf ears. They are such a cheap protection. No longer do you have to worry about a he-said-she-said situation after an automobile collision, or several other types of situations. They are no hassle; with the auto-looping and auto-power-on/off, you don't have to even touch the dash cam at all unless you want to download videos off of it. Also, I think it's neat, like if you want to analyze your driving route, re-listen to a conversation, or just check out something you passed by earlier.

Dash cams are very popular in places like Russia, and I think the biggest thing holding back dash cam popularity in places like USA is...they aren't already popular. Lots of people don't even know that dash cams are actually a thing. Also, people think "well, no one else seems to have one".

I have both a $63 DVR-207GS (which is a slightly newer version of the DVR-027) and a $47 G1W. I like the G1W better. I think the G1W has better video quality, wider visual angle, better audio, a far better mount, better interface, is more discreet, and other small stuff. The G1W is just awesome and it's less than $50. It's ridiculous that dash cams aren't more popular.

Note: The G1W uses a car-lighter-to-mini-usb cable and that crapped out on me after a few months, but I bought a car-lighter-to-dual-usb adapter and a usb-to-mini-usb cable, and everything was great again. Still cheaper in total than the DVR-207GS I bought.

The $239 Lukas LK-7900 ACE is rated highly for high temperature survival, has GPS features, and seems like a really nice camera in many other respects as well. I think if my two cheapo dash cams can't survive the upcoming summer, I'm going to buy a Lukas LK-7900 ACE or maybe something with dual cameras (like the Lukas LK-5900 HD Duo). Or heck, I might upgrade even if the cheapos do fine during the summer.

I feel much safer with my dash cam, and that's a great feeling.

Hey all, I got a bunch of info from here and the forums, so I thought I would give back and drop a few links.

First is the roof rack. I think the rola roof rack is the best looking and ends up being one of the cheapest.

Next up is the cargo box. I thought getting one this long would look stupid, but it's way better than I imagined. The rocketbox 11 is one of Thule's cheapest and big enough to fit my huge board in. No noticable drop in mpg, either - hovering barely above 33.

The backup camera is a fantastic upgrade. I followed this post and dug into the forums posted there. I would double check the apim codes because it's a tad dangerous and I didn't use the same exact codes as u/brbauer2 (I have the 2016 w/ sync 3). Shoutout, by the way, the album was super helpful. Also, the pins we inserted to the wiring harness didn't connect with the head unit, so I shredded a small amount of foil to bridge those connections.

Maybe someday I'll get that accessport/intercooler and a rear motor mount, but I'm loving it as it is!

Congrats! I don't know much about cars, but I like the electronics so here are a few cool things you could do.

• Get a splitter so you can power multiple devices.
  
• Get a USB Micro Cable, a USB C cable, and a Lightning cable so any guest can charge their phone.
  
• Install a backup camera.
  
• Get some LEDs for under the dash.
  
• Get a trash can.
  
• Get a quickcharge adapter if your phone supports quickcharge, Maps applications can crush battery life.
  
  Get in the habit of setting calendar reminders for when you have to renew your registration, inspection, and insurance.
  
  There's probably no way I can express this properly, but I'll try. You're entering one of the most dangerous periods of your life. There was once a time in my life where I felt like I was a pretty good driver. That came to a pretty abrupt end a few times, and not because I was being reckless but because I wasn't being afraid. Stay afraid. When you feel that thought in the back of your mind that you're getting pretty good at driver or that you're a pretty safe driver, take that as a moment to really reevaluate things.
  
  In skydiving there's a saying "complacency kills". And in driving it's the same. You can't control 99% of the variables out on the road, but you can mitigate 99% of the risk with just one variable- your speed. Be careful and enjoy driving!

It's actually kinda funny because my dad has an Aliner, super light weight popup camper and also has a rare Saab 9-5 Griffin. He got a tow hitch installed on the Saab and the Aliner has power assisted braking, so the Saab will tow it no problem. But he wanted something more substantial with 4WD because he likes to take the camper out west, and South Dakota mud during heavy rains are no joke.

The camper is only like 1100Lbs, super light, the F150 tows that think as if it was just a Tonka truck. You would never even know it's back there unless you looked in the rearview mirror, haha.

He had this weird system of using these flags on telescoping poles to help him back into the trailer to hook it up, which is when I said screw that and installed a new head unit for him with a little screen and the backup camera. It's super easy to hook up the trailer now. Plus, now he has bluetooth without some stupid cigarette adapter FM modulator doobie.

Get out, hitch up, flip the switch to the rear camera and now enjoy seeing behind the trailer while driving.

Note, put the transmitter up by the tongue jack camera so that you minimize the distance the wireless signal needs to transmit.

Sweet, thanks for putting me on to these. I'm noticing that a lot of these monitors come bundled with cameras. Some of these cameras look like they would make some sweet looking fpv cameras. What is the benefit to using a board cam like the PZ0420 over something like this?

As others have said, it's not ideal, but it'll work if that's all you have. Especially if you're going for a portable solution. Otherwise, I'd recommend something like this off Amazon if you're looking to save size.

Another solution would be SSH. Install openssh on your pi (Debian: sudo apt-get install openssh, Arch: pacman -S openssh), then putty on your Windows machine (OSX / Linux can both use OpenSSH as well) and ssh into your pi.

I have four of these, one in each of our cars. It's pretty good for the price, $30-$40. It plugs into the cigarette lighter and starts and stops automatically, the best resolution for it is 720p. You need to get a SD card for it so I have 16gb cards in each of them. You can certainly get better ones if you want to pay $100+ but for the price it's an excellent value.

Once you install one camera, you'll be shocked how easy it is. It will feel like sorcery. The hardest part is choosing how to get the wires from the camera inside. Here is the kit I used for my backup camera which I mounted in the third brake light and conveniently passed the wires through there. The purpose of this post is to show members that you can have a functional 2 camera system for less than $100.

Extra cable I needed this to run the entire length of my van.

This monitor supports two cameras. I got some wago connectors from my job and spliced into the wire for the passenger reading light. This connection is always hot so I additionally added a circuit switch I picked up from autozone.

To add a second camera, I would just need to buy the camera. I am thinking of mounting something like this on the bottom of the passenger side mirror, to assist with parallel parking. I imagine that would also serve your purpose. Again, the hardest part is getting the wires inside :)

As far as monitoring outside, if you find yourself in a precarious situation it is best to just get in the driver's seat and leave if things escalate. The fact that you can see them on your camera means nothing.

You can get a backup camera, and even sensors, installed. These are usually wired to the front, and are available on amazon for price comparison.

On the front, you have have to have a display for the camera. If you have one already, this will save you a lot of expense. The display can either be the screen on a double DIN headunit (usually expensive and laggy. Play with them in the store) or a single DIN headhunt with a screen that motors out (might be a pain to use). Installing this usually requires an adapter and a kit; you can do it at home if handy, but hooking up the reverse camera too might be a big project.

You could also use a separate, dedicated display (the easiest to install but might be ugly) or a rearview mirror replacement (might be hard to see due to low quality or glare).

Personally I think your best option is a Double DIN unit professionally installed (expensive and most people like it) or a [rearview camera replacement] (https://www.amazon.com/AUTO-VOX-Inputs-Adjusting-Brightness-Hyundai/dp/B00J863EI2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466644744&sr=8-1&keywords=rear+view+camera+mirror) (not expensive, subtle).

Don't know about the regulations, but I installed one in my vehicle (South Surrey redditor) a few months ago, and did it in a way that you can't see it from outside the vehicle, it looks completely stock.

Recording begins when the key is turned to the ACC position, or ON, and the unit shuts down when the key is turned off, so you don't have to fuss around with setting the camera in place each time you enter the car. Every journey is automatically recorded to a 32gb SD card. The MD12G unit can accept 2 camera inputs - each one records to its own SD card. I'm going to install a camera in my tailgate (normally used for a backup camera) to potentially catch the license plate of any hit-and-run rear enders.


Used an MD12G mobile DVR (meant for running interior security cameras on a bus/taxi/etc) from http://www.dty.com.cn/ and a cheapo Koolatron camera from Amazon. The license plate camera is zip tied in behind my grill until I can figure out a better way of locating it. So far it performs as I'd hoped, a 32gb card is enough to store almost 2 months worth of trips easily.

Haven't caught any mindblowing accidents with it yet. Well worth the cost of the install when it comes to peace of mind; I'll always have an impartial witness with me if I do get in an accident, and there's nothing visible from outside to tempt a thief to break in, and since it doesn't require any input from me to do its job, and has no display visible inside the cab, I don't see how distracted driving laws could apply.

The nice thing is that it is very compact, and the GPS logger/windshield mount makes it super easy to unmount and mount without having to mess with the USB cable, which in turn turns into a very clean looking install.

Both those are two most recommended 2-channel systems right now that have the most positive feedback.

There is a more budget 2-channel called the BlackSys CF-100 - going for $90 right now.

I'm in the same position with the rig I just got, as someone who has ran a ton of analog cameras for residential I'm already comfortable with all the concepts of them.

I was looking on amazon and came across THIS LISTING and in the reviews someone mentioned that it has leads to put real physical switches to select each input.

the ability to install four switches/buttons on my dash to rapidly switch/momentarily use inputs would be awesome, instead of fiddling with the buttons on the screen.

I haven't had the chance to read into the cheaper units, nor have I hooked my existing cameras up to a modern display to see how good they are. this is basically the results of a quick google.

I love it, and the software that you can download for your PC (seen in my screenshot) is great! It shows the gps location of where you are in the video and even a rough mph estimate. I bought extra mounts for it so I can switch it between cars. I would highly recommend it to anyone, it can only help you in an accident situation and even if you never get in an accident again you can save videos of crazy stuff you saw while driving.

and this is back in Mid January. The only hiccups I notice sometimes is when I put it in reverse there's a slight flicker but doesn't happen all the times but I think it's just from the camera turning on. Also the ring around the lens is beginning to turn bronze.

Otherwise mine has been great so far but I do live in no snow, no rain weather. Just sun, sun, sun. Wonder what yours could be going on or why it dies.

I chose this one because it was on sale at the time and it was wireless, meaning that I didn't have to run wires from the back to the front if the vehicle.

My only warning to you is finding a proper entry point into the car from the outside for the camera. I had to drill into the car and then reseal the hole to run the wire from the outside into the car and reverse tail lights (this is something that can't be avoided unfortunately) but above the license plate for camera placement has been perfect for me!

I'm not personally familiar with the b8 series infotainment and what all it can control on the car, if it has a lot built in that isn't related specifically to the sound system then you likely won't be able to upgrade it. If it doesn't you can get replacements that support all of what you asked for. If it does a potentially easier option is to just get a bluetooth aux adapter:

I was in the same boat as you; 2008 Ridgeline RTL, no navigation.

But after looking up a guide and seeing the amount of dismantling required to run wires to the rear of the truck, I decided to get a wireless model instead.

, the camera and transmitter splice into the rear backup lights. It probably took me about 2 hours to install (I really took my time to cable manage everything), mount and test everything. There was plenty of space to hide everything in the quarter panels.
There are also several youtube videos showing how to install it. I don't have any complaints with the camera or screen.

I don't tow anything, I mainly got it to help me parallel park on busy streets.

I haven't found that exact one, but it's definitely part of rear view camera setup. If it's still attached to the vehicle, can you post a picture of the camera part? Some of them are made to look like license plate frames.

I paid $27 for This one from amazon. It served me well. I have a better one that cost about $60 now, it's serving me well too.

Like most things police use a custom version would probably be made of course. This one off amazon supports up to a 32GB which would be roughly 80 mins of video at 1280*720. They could easily make one that held a terabyte hard drive and then you could record a month or two at a time.

I don't know if you'll have any luck finding something for under $50, but check out some of the budget builds for quadcopter racers. Something like this transmitter & receiver, camera, and this display puts you at about $90 & you could probably find this stuff cheaper on other sites. You'll need a battery to power the receiver and display.

I have one that mounts across the license plate, I like this design better because the camera is adjustable and can be removed easily. I have it plugged into my aftermarket head unit and its set to always on so that I can view it while driving.

Mine is very similar to that. All you have to do is power it by splicing into a wire that has power when the car is on, and if you want you can splice into the reverse signal wire so that the camera turns on when you shift into reverse. There's write ups of this on ft86club

I've been using this for about a week and its great for the price, has all the functions I could need for a dash cam and its cheap. Get the 32GB card and you are covered all day whilst driving.

You have a decent budget. I don't know why the other poster says otherwise. I have this style of camera, the rearview mirror style, but I don't have this particular brand Pruveeo. It's only $59 but has great reviews.

I got this one from Amazon, it's wired because I read that the wireless have a hard time getting through the metal in the bus, depending on how long your bus is. Mine is 34', so I didn't want to chance it. However, since I bought it, I've seen some longer buses on YouTube put in a wireless system, and it works just fine.

I've been pleased with my Lukas 7900 ACE. It's spendy, but worth it. It was rated for a higher temperature over others I looked at. (Summer can be brutal).

This is the monitor I used. I just took it out of the case and glued it into my BMO enclosure.

And this is the battery I used. Again I took the insides out of the battery enclosure so it would fit inside BMO.

I had to bypass the voltage regulator on the monitor so that it would run on the 5V from the battery instead of the 12V it was manufactured to use.

It has been working really well, you do need to get a micro-SD card. Includes a reverse camera that I swear I will hook up one of these days.

I recently did last year with my '13 Rallye Redline. However, the path I took was using the Dodge/Chrysler MyGig radio. I wanted to keep the Bluetooth speakerphone, steering wheel controls and Sirius. I got the MyGig low RBZ radio off eBay for $250. I tried going with the wiring harness adapter and the sales code change from my (now) ex-dealership. However, after spending the $60 at the dealership, it still didn't work. I bough an open box PAC BCI-CH21 off eBay for $100 (about the cost of the wiring harness and dealership fees to begin with). At first I went with Esky EC170-08 camera, but after 2 of them rusting out within months, I bought COOLINT CT-107B Mini OEM Style Solid Metal Housing 520TVL. I mounted the camera above the license plate, and the only complaint I have is that the horizon is close to the top of the screen. It wasn't until after I did all this, that I saw newer head units can integrate with the steering wheel controls for the price I bought the RBZ.

A cool side note about the MyGig radio. On its first power on, it had the Chrysler logo from the previous car. On its second power up, it had the Dodge logo. After upgrading its firmware to the latest version, it changed its color scheme to match the red and black of the Redline.

I only have it recording in 720p, but it will do full 1080. I currently have an 8gig card in there and it will record about 2 days worth of my normal commute which is Far West ish and Parmer/35. It can handle a 64gig card.

It cost me around $50-$60 I think. I used this camera and I used this OBD2 adapter. I also needed some small connectors to plug the video wire into the back of the head unit (these things).

I used this thread by /u/brbauer2 as a guide, which was very helpful.

It was kind of difficult, but mostly because I don't really have much experience with the wiring stuff so I went slow to make sure I didn't mess up any splices or anything. I also initially put the wrong wire into the back of the head unit, so I had to take it back apart and use the right wire (the thread I used shows a red wire in the back of the head unit connector, its actually the yellow wire from the video cable that you want) but that only took maybe an additional 30 minutes.

Overall, I'd say go for it if you're interested!

I have the LUKAS LK 7900 Ace. Had it before Uber. Record video and audio, 1080p 35 fps. Many passengers asked if it's a dash cam. I tell what it was and it only records what's in front, not inside the car. Some people don't want to be recorded. I feel safer with it on.

I bought this one yesterday, partially because of the high review average. I'm excited to try it out.

I've been using the ABEO HDVR-150 Mirror Dash Cam for close to a year now with no issues yet. Very easy to set up and install.

You can go 3 ways:

1. Get a new radio that is double din and has a screen with back up camera input, get that installed and install a back up camera.
   
   
2. This kit will let you replace your rear view mirror and add a screen inside so when you back up it shows there.
   
   
3. Get a kit that also requires a special small screen for the back up camera, probably the least desirable way to go.

Your headunit is expecting a composite video (ie, low def) video feed which won't be compatible with a 1280x720 camera in any way.

Something like this would connect directly to your headunit, and would take power from the reverse light circuit (which you'd also have to connect to your head unit so that it knew when to switch to the camera view):

You can get license plate cameras for less than $15, and a head unit with Bluetooth, DVD player, and SD card reader for under $100. Granted, you get what you pay for, but I bought this exact combo nearly two years ago for a 92 Honda and it's served me well enough. Has two video outs so I added a 7" monitor. You can get an add-a-fuse kit to tie in to the reverse lights fuse, so you don't even need to mess with the wiring back near the reverse lights, so no permanent alterations to the car.

A lot of Android devices can output HDMI with a simple adapter. However that sounds overkill for what you want and HDMI field monitors aren't cheap. If you just need low resolution you could go with a Raspberry Pi and use the composite video output to a cheap display.

Writing LVDS drivers from scratch is a nightmare. Unless you buy a display that already has drivers available for your device, it's not even worth attempting.

What kind of resolution are you looking for with this handheld device? Composite video is crap for quality, but it's cheap (plenty of <$20 options), and with only 2 wires to hook up, is dead simple. Maybe consider the CHIP? It's made with handheld applications in mind - they even sell a blackberry-style display/keypad/enclosure thing for it.
