Protection from rocks can still be had from boots with a stiff sole, and most boots have a stiff sole. If you're kicking shoes with the toe cap, then you really should look into fixing how you walk.
I'm with you on keeping rocks out. That's nice. Fortunately you can have the same benefit by using gaiters. Dirty Girl gaiters are very popular on the PCT for that reason.
The other thing I like about waterproof boots is that they keep out fine sand, which means my feet are clean at the end of the day. It's not worth all the extra sweating on a long hike though, at least not for me.
Personally, I recommend looking into Dirty Girl gaiters and using them with non waterproof trail running shoes. I don't use them though because sand and rocks in my shoes doesn't bother me.
Btw, I screwed up my ankles wearing high top hiking boots. I actually twisted my ankles more with them than with low top trail running shoes. I understand needing ankle support, and sometimes I still need it, but I don't go to high top boots for ankle support. When I need ankle support, I use this ankle brace with my trail runners, and it's pretty good at providing support while being comfortable enough to hike in. When I need even more, I use this ankle support, and this one won't even work with boots.
In case you are ever in the market for a new ankle brace, I can't praise Malleoloc ankle braces enough. I didn't realize it was so pricey because I got mine through my parents' insurance years ago, but I really can't recommend it enough. My main three sports are tennis, soccer and basketball and this is far and away the best ankle brace I've ever found for them. Disc may not be quite as ankle intensive as them but I still felt like I should recommend a product that I've had literally no problems with ever.
TL;DR - awesome (semi-expensive) ankle brace that is not in the style of regular sleeve braces.
If you're already all set on that front, good luck healing up and like other people here already said don't push yourself too fast with an injury like this

For the record, I don't play vball. I'm a tennis player and I'm a little aggressive on the court, so I need ankle support, at the very least, for confidence. I've tried a bunch out, and these are by far the best. Definitely on the pricey side, but I love these because they are the strongest and quickest/easiest to put on out of anything I've tried. Highly recommend. Also used by Andy Murray (tennis player, among a few others)

I don't actually - I've probably tried 4 different orthotics and have never needed to. The ones I ultimately really liked for my PF only cover the back half of the foot - these ones. That said, are you taking out the insole that came with the shoe? I don't with my half-ones but normally you do have to do that. It depends how the orthotic isn't fitting too; is it not long enough/too long? Or just there's not enough room with your foot and the orthotic? The ankle brace is probably why you'd need to buy a half size up, which makes sense, and yeah you'd probably want to do that with Vans. (Not sure if you're asking about PF specifically but if you are, I did like these for when I was doing something more 'stressful' like running but they won't be as supportive as a brace). In the very least, vans/converse are common enough that you could find a pair at a store to try on, even if you don't like the style and then find a preferred style/color on their website!
Also, I'm sorry your feet have been hurting. My PF took well over a year to heal and it honestly was devastating to my mental health. I never realized how much my mood depends on being able to go outside for a walk/run, or dance around, or basically do anything fun. I hope you heal soon!
I am 41 this July and started grappling at 37 (judo) moved onto BJJ when I was 39. I am far from a fountain of knowledge, so use what is useful. I will type this out for my own benefit as much as anyone else, so don't take it as me trying to be an authority.
Here is what I have found helpful so far:
Slow Solid Relaxed Defense
Play a defensive centric game, and make it a relaxed game too. Really work on the key defensive positions (Saulo's JJ universe lays these out beautifully). You can then find your own comfortable little nooks and crannies where you can gather gas (while they expel theirs) and think about your position and next move. Learning to get comfy in a bad position, is a real, big benefit. The more you work on defence, the more you can afford to chill out and not worry about being put in a bad positions all the time from younger more dynamic guys.
Avoiding Injuries
Most of my injuries have been of my own doing: Basing out backwards and coming down on one finger, trying to power out of bad positions and playing sprawl against a 25 year old 200lb wrestler. I am now at the point where I just try to go along with whatever happens and I don’t fear a bad position so much now. I can be mounted and smothered in darkness, but I can feel surprisingly at ease in this scenario, so I don’t give them so much as an arm or a collar and they eventually make a bad move and then I escape (which feels great, just as great as getting a submission). I am now a stubborn old goat to the younger guys who get frustrated as they can’t catch me out to easily.
Fingers are a big one for all BJJ’ers, but especially for us older guys as they take so much longer to repair - I have a personal bad record here of dislocations, breaks and tweaks. The lesson I am really trying to learn here is, always keep grips, especially when sweeping or being swept – a grip will save a finger going badly in the wrong direction. Also learn to tape your fingers using boxers tape

Most of the products listed here are very high quality things to address foot pain & help customize shoes. Gaynor makes an adhesive foam pad for the toe box of pointe shoes that works well for the toe box of hockey skates. Toe tape is another option if the toe sleeves are too snug. I like my skate a little snug bc I grew up figure skating and it’s what I’m used to. But unless you want to spend gobs of money or hit up every used hockey shop for that Cinderella pair a little DIY customizing & shit on your feet can go a long way.
If I was you and I couldn’t return that pair I’d use some of these options until I got that perfect pair.
I had it pretty bad awhile back and did the whole cortisone injections. Not very effective long term so I seen a different specialist and did another round of shots that worked better but still temporary at best. It got to the point where crawling around was easier than walking.
Comppression socks cured me in 2 weeks.
They are hundreds of brands but those were the best. They are tight and uncomfortable the 1st few day but then you leave home without them. It's been a few years and I haven't worn them since.
I have compression braces for ankles, knees and elbows, all of which I bought with approval from my therapists (OT and PT) from Amazon (link, link, link) They help me feel more stable without limiting my RoM too much. I also have hard braces for wrists that OT made for me, I'm hoping after my tendinosis heals a little that I can switch to something softer like a compression glove or something.
A bash guard will not protect your pant legs. Tuck your pants into your socks or invest in the innumerable solutions to keeping your pants out of the chain-line.
The 5-bolt 94mm BCD is not popular and I can not find anyone who is making after market bash-guards. If you REALLY have your heart set on this solution your best bet might be to try and find an old chainring in the right bolt pattern and grind the teeth off. OR contact a small manufacturer like BBG or any machine shop to make you a one-off custom guard. You will also of course need new chainring bolts and spacers for any bash guard you add.
I sprained my ankle once and for the first week I was like nah it will go away. Well it didnt, so I went to my doc and he said, yep 4 weeks atleast pause! They're really useful and you won't twist your ankle when wearing them. Just make sure to not wear them for a prolonged amount of time as they are kinda tight and you obviously need to allow some blood circulation.
So funny thing about ankle support... that little bit of material on mid and high tops doesn't actually prevent injury. It may even lead to a higher chance of injury thanks to reduced sensitivity as well as relying on a sense of protection that isn't actually there. The only thing that will actually support your ankles in a way that prevents injury are actual ankle braces.
Skateboard tricks use a lot of ankle motion, and I would recommend sticking with low top shoes. In addition, I would recommend looking up ankle exercises to help strengthen your ankles. This not only helps you prevent injury, but will improve your control.
I basically destroyed my ankle in my first year of play, and now almost always wear a brace. I've been trying to wean off and down onto tape the last few months but I feel super insecure because of how the break was before. If you have someone who knows how to tape, try that. Otherwise, perhaps try one of these braces?

I like both of them and they fit in my skates without feeling bulky at all. I still go back to the first one when the weather changes and my ankle gets super painful.
I got a pair of sock sleeve things with an integrated gel pad. I used it for a similar thing on my heel, but it worked great. It might help, try it out.

Funny, I just got new Maxxums and am having the same issue... Intense pain on the right side. I can see a dark red imprint of the screw from the boot in my ankle. I just got these:

Also, like I said, these are to support the types of injuries that usually require SAR to be involved. You obviously want small items for things like blisters, cuts and stings that those guys don't usually deal with.

I get blisters on sides of my legs about 3" above the ankle as well. I have small feet and notice that the tongue of smaller skates are not wide enough to protect my legs from the corners of the skate boot (where the eyelets are). I even have custom skates with extra length added to the boot.
A while back I ended up using silicon pads, they work great, small enough where they are not noticeable at all.

These are the ones myself and friends use. The ankle sleeve ones are best for skates.
I wear half crew socks, they come up just past the top of the boot. I also tend not to lace the boot all the way up for more flexibility. If I do want to lace them all the way up, I flex my toes towards my shin while I lace them up, so I know I'll be able to get some flexibility in my ankles. Haven't had a chance to really test them out, but I'm impressed so far.
This is the one! It says it's an ankle sleeve but covers my forearm perfectly.
If you go to a pro shop they can punch out that spot. My right ankle is super pointy and in new skates it feels exactly like you described, as if the bone is being pushed into a hard wall. I left it on the punch out device overnight and the pain has been gone ever since.
If you don’t want to go that route, a gel sleeve might do the trick. This one is half the price of the “Bunga” brand, and you can just cut it in half to make two sleeves.

Only go if you you really want to be sure it's not broken, that way they can complete an x-ray. I have sprained my ankles alot playing indoor soccer over the years so if it were me, I'd probably RICE rest, ice, compression, elevate, until symptoms like swelling and bruising go away. ASO ankle braces. You can get them on Amazon for around $20ish each. I have weak ankles and after breaking my foot terribly in 2007, I've been using the same 2 braces for about 10 years now and they're still going strong.. Highly recommended! I haven't even had as much as a medium to severe ankle roll while wearing them.
Putting them on every time you play is time consuming as it adds 2-3 mins to whatever time it already takes you to get ready, but it's far better than the alternative. Especially in my case!

It's just a bit of gel padding and stays in place pretty well

I'm a figure skater who used to get pretty bad lace bite on my ankles... I use these, exactly the same thing as the Bungas but way cheaper. And it's 10" so I cut it in half like you said but it covers way more. I'll never skate without them now, they're so comfortable!

I wear these ankle wraps as I've rolled both of my ankles quite a bit before (one pretty bad like you're describing). They limit your movement a little bit, but I've been in situations where I've rolled my ankle while wearing them, thinking it was going to be an injury, but I was totally fine. Something like this:

I wear a pair of Swiftwick over-the-calf compression socks, then I put these on over the socks. I originally bought them for ankle support (I have bad ankles), but they've also done wonders for arch support, too.
I've considered going the VH route due to lace bite and may at some point when money is less important to me. Until then I make due wearing Supremes with a "bunga" sleeve cut in half in the front of each one of my socks and skipping eyelets on my skates. For <$15 on Amazon you're silly not to try it. I went to a podiatrist for similar reasons -- car wreck caused tendons and ligament tears and I am trying to heal.
I was in a walking boot and they gave me a soft brace after.. all provided .. and I am bigger than you ....
They had to adjust the walking boot and add a piece in the front where the Velcro goes to help it be more comfortable.

Yeah the canvas is too thin. Unless you get some real hightops like Jordan 1's your aren't going to get any meaningful amount of support. I have an ankle brace I put on my ankle if it starts to hurt. This is the brace I have.
Depending on how tight you get it it can impact ankle motion, but it isnt enough to really affect how I skate. Plus you can wear whatever shoes you already have/like.

Thank you for the reply! I'll look up deep friction massage, and will continue moving the ankle through full range of motions. Not sure if I should be taking ibprofen regularly or just before my next attempted run, as the ankle doesn't hurt other than about 1.5 miles into my runs.

Check these out. I was having the same problem. Bought this and it's helped significantly. The package only comes with 1 but you can very easily cut it in half and it still provides plenty of coverage where you need it.

I use these on both ankles because my ankles are the worst. They don't seem too bulky to me. There's also the ones that are basically compression socks which are better than nothing.
So I had a bad ankle sprain back in Feb. The one thing I found was working it (stretching, walking, skating), helped immensely. Another thing I'd recommend is if you're not already, wear an ankle brace every time you lace up your skates. I use one similar to this. I refuse to skate without it because it makes a huge difference in my side-to-side mobility.
Lateral movement is going to be a bitch for a while though. Know your limits and don't push yourself too hard where you end up making it worse.

ankle braces are very personal, there is so much that can go wrong with all the small bones and ligaments of that joint that it will be trial and error. I have tried at least a dozen braces, those work well for me. And combat boots. combat boots rock.
