You're renting right? Have you ever painted anything before? First things first, ask the landlord if he'll supply the paint if you supply the labor. It can't hurt! But you'd need to do a decent job sooo...

I'd go with a cool white in the kitchen. They make special super smooth durable paint for cupboards, but it's pricy! It finishes more like an enamel. Try to find out what kind of paint was used previously. You may need a primer and if you aren't sure, definitely get primer. Just do everything white, and research how to paint cupboards. 90% of a good paint job is prep work! Things like sanding, removing hardware, priming, taking cupboards doors down, etc. I wouldn't waste time on the insides unless you're really anal about stuff. I always bought the rubbery liners for mine.

If the landlord allows, I'd add hardware to the cupboards as well. These are a decent clean look:

But measure to see what makes sense. Drill and sand the holes before painting and look to see if there were pre-existing pulls. If so, try to re-use those old holes (sometimes they are patched and painted over). Path of least resistance and so forth...

The kitchen looks small with no natural light so I think the under cabinet LED strips are a great idea. Something like this might work - I would go with warm lighting just so the white isn't so stark.

For the living area just get rid of that ugly neon vomit color as fast as possible. Dear god. Do not leave any of that.

I would aim for something in a very light warm gray (I know it's not the most revolutionary but it works) for the walls or if you want to go modern, a nice crisp white. You can always add warmth and color with textiles (furniture, rugs, curtains) so don't be afraid of doing a fresh box in white if you want the light. Use a matte or eggshell finish in the living room. Anything with gloss will highlight EVERY imperfection in the walls.

If your living room windows are subject to passerby's views, I'd consider getting a double rod for curtains. A softly textured sheer curtain will allow lots of light in the daytime while still obscuring you from unwanted attention. Something like this:

You can then choose a thicker curtain for the outer rod for evening privacy. (Sheers tend to be much more sheer at night when lights are on inside.)

Since it's a basement apartment, if the ceilings are low, you can trick the eye into seeing the ceilings as higher if you hang the rod closer to the ceiling but it looks like you have standard height ceilings so I think a standard 84" long curtain length would work out fine.

As far as furniture goes, it's so subjective, but the setup in the pic looks good! I would stay with neutrals, personally, and add color through throw blankets or toss pillows and artwork and accent pieces (be they plants or statuary or what have you). I'm still a big fan of grey. It's a one bed so I'd consider a sleeper sofa. They've come a long way and you don't have to get something that looks like it lived at your grandmas. Something along these lines would work well, I think. (The added storage is a nice bonus too.)

I'd add some large area rugs. Definitely some artwork. Society6.com is a good place to find interesting art on a budget.

Add some simple mirrors on the walls as well - ideally one large one on the wall opposite the windows to reflect light back through the apartment. It would make a world of difference for you. I'm kinda pushing you in the clean and modern direction so I'd recommend something like this:

It could add some warmth and texture to what might otherwise be a bland wall. Adding some floating shelves below or to the sides with some favorite books or mementos might be nice as well.

Definitely add some floor lamps and perhaps a side table lamp or two as well. Lighting is so much more important than people give it credit for. Always buy soft white. I actually really like Edison bulbs inside of lamps because they are a soft and soothing lighting, even when covered by lamp shades. They make a nice point of interest too. I always buy lamps with 3-way switches also. You'll never realize how awesome it is until you have it and then you'll use it constantly. (Won't work with the Edison bulbs though - you'll have to buy the dimmable lightbulbs). If you want the Edison bulb look to be a part of the decor, these lamps are pretty fun and work well for date night lighting, chilling on the couch eating snacks and watching Netflix lighting etc.

If you're buying area rugs - get them larger. You want to define a space with it - not have a bath mat between your couch and your coffee table.

Get a coffee table with storage. Having a place for all your stuff is key to keeping things looking nice and uncluttered. I love having lots of blankets around because I tend to hunker down in winter but if you're really minimalist you could get away with not having storage.

One caveat - I did push for a more modern look BUT all of this advice would work if you like a more traditional style too. Key points being lots of neutrals and don't get too crazy with accent colors. Match your finishes on metals as much as possible and just try to keep things within the same finish family.

One of the huge problems this place has right now is a warm matte grayish violet as the kitchen accent and a an oddly cool yellow green semi gloss on the walls. Just choose warm or cool (I like warm, personally, especially for places with light walls) and stick to it. If you try to keep things cohesive you'll generally end up happy with the result!

• Ah this is actually a big topic.
  
• For a hone, you have three options. A basic grooved steel, a ceramic rod, or a diamond coated steel. The grooved (most common) and the diamond will hone your edge but will also sharpen for better and for worst your edge at the same time due to the courseness of the grooving / diamond coating. The ceramic will do the same, however because it's smooth, it's usually designed to give you a very fine grit at most in it's "sharpening" process ie removes as little metal as possible, maybe at most polish the edge a bit which favors most nicer knife owners. For a western style knife such as yours, and especially stamped blade with a low hardness, your edge usually will roll and fairly often and thus a hone is actually best for you to own and use on a somewhat daily basis. I recommend any non diamond, grooved steel although I find that diamond steels grind far too much metal at inaccurate angles (due to the very wild free hand motion of steeling) but does help give you a quick toothy edge. My personal one of use is ceramic.
  
• As for sharpening, while I don't like pull through or machine sharpeners at all and personally use stones, I don't exactly recommend them for you. The reason is I just don't see the time spend hand sharpening on stones worth the blade/blade material. That is, your knife isn't designed to hold an extremely keen edge, nor is it designed to hold an edge for an insane amount of time, thus for me, when I use a nox or a stamped blade a pull through or a machine sharpener is fine by me. As recommended the accusharp , or any of the decent chefchoice sharpeners will work very well for you. However if you want to progress and learn, then I recommend a low to medium grit combo stone. Say 600 and 1000/2000 so that if you feel like it, you can reset the bevel and then give your knife a decent working edge.
  
• Now say if you upgrade to nicer blades, then by all means stones is the way to go if not an Edge Pro system. Reason for it is that your paying for very nice metal on your blade and thus the very aggressive grinding actions of machine and pull thru sharpeners hurts your investment far more than helps it. Further more, you control the angle and the fineness of your blade. Have Super Blue core steel? Hap40? Bring that sucker down to 9-10 degrees a side with a 20k mirror polished edge. I like to see a machine do that. Plus, usually, with these 'nicer blades' your often running into Japanese knives. J knives are usually made with pretty hard metals, hrc 60+ which does not work with many steels on the market since J knives aren't designed for that to begin with. J knives are designed to have keen, hard , steep edges that are meant to be held for a long time and most likely to chip than roll so whenever it's time to touch up, it's by stones only.
  
• Anyways thats likely more than you ever wanted to know, so to answer your OP, for a steel I recommend the Tojiro Sharpening steel, if you prefer the ideal of a diamond steel giving you a toothy edge while your hone then a DMT fine will suit you. If you want your hone to just hone and not sharpen, then the Idahone fine is pretty much everyone's favorite.
  
• For sharpeners the AccuSharp is my favorite pull thru sharpener, the Spydero sharpmaker wasn't too bad and any of the common electric sharpeners will give you a working edge pesto pesto "pro" or get a basic combo stone

1. Slap a new coat of white on the ceilings. I know you like it, but you can see that they tried to fix the border with semi-gloss paint in the picture, and it kind of takes away from the actual design. I think the ceiling designs look great in the rooms, but the living room (especially around the fireplace) is another story.
   
   
   
2. Will probably be shanked for taking away the traditional appeal, but paint all the baseboards, crown molding, and window paneling white. It would look cleaner to be honest. The biggest things in our house were the things that didn't just make it look nicer, but also were a functional upgrade.

We got a new fridge/microwave/dishwasher and range (uhh, because they all had to match - we only NEEDED the fridge and microwave). The benefit is that they look great (GE Slate), and the fridge is Energy Star (besides AC, it's the biggest power draw in the house), the dishwasher is stainless inside and uses only... I think it's 4 gallons to do a full cycle and the acid test was getting the little tea infuser tongs spotless!

Replace boring round door knobs with brushed nickel door HANDLES. You don't really notice it directly, but it just freshens up the inside.

Replace yellowing and ugly outlet and switch plates. Or replace them all with Decora and probably use white instead of almond.

We also replaced a few of the old boob lights in closets and hallways with LED fixtures that put out a great and pleasant light.

No more dark and depressing closets, pantries and laundry rooms!

In the kitchen, adding knobs/handles to the doors is a huge improvement. Slow-close hinges is also a must.

I like the 'flush' (no 'open' ends) handles on anything below the counter so they don't catch and rip my pants. All my shorts suffer from catching pockets or belt loops on the bar style handles. Regardless of how convenient they are to hang towels from.



EDIT: We also really like using the IKEA picture ledges to put pictures up. We staggered a few of them for a more interesting look, but the main thing is that it avoids multiple holes in the wall to hang pictures from.

We can easily rearrange pictures by moving them by size or topic etc. on the ledges to achieve a different look.

Another thing I'm a pretty big fan of is keeping the house mostly painted very light/white colors and then decorate with colorful drapes, blinds and furniture. It's a lot easier to change the theme by just a new couch cover, drapes and sheets on the bed than to repaint a room because you're tired of the color.

Thanks! I'm hoping it can help people looking to make stands for relatively cheap. As others have posted, a more opaque black may blend better, but this still works well for my needs. Plus I like to see what's below the stand anyways.

The flat roofs are nice, as you can describe them as a steepled roof, but it gives you a place to set a mini. The multi-level buildings can be split and pulled apart.

I got the foam core at amazon, and I use 3-2-1 blocks for aligning the walls when gluing. The only thing I'm not sure about is how long they will hold up. My main concern is moisture and warping, as I do not have a bottom piece on the buildings (only a roof).

Should be an interesting session tomorrow. Largest battle yet! The large group on the main road are civilians, the invaders are coming down the streets. The party has defend the civilians as they retreat to the castle (not pictured) on the right of the map. I still have to set a few more tokens on the map (including the PC's and some of their allies), but it should be quite a bit of fun assuming I can keep combat flowing well (Oh, and that minitaur is actually a giant ape... polymorph is a powerful spell)!

Yep, definitely meant as a reply to that.. silly mobile app. Anyway, yes, MDF is not 'quite' traditional wood -- my suggestion would be to (carefully) drill 2 holes and secure a handle through a hanger strap on the inside with a couple of washers. This should provide more than adequate support.

As for a latch, something like this should work nicely.

Plus, if you're feeling really froggy, you could travel-ready the case a bit more with some briefcase/cabinet corners (similar to these).

I can't find a copy of the full manual online, but there is an actual physical bypass of the solenoid that you can do instead of just removing the batteries.

After turning off the water to the unit, you can remove the solenoid by removing the plastic clips connecting the hoses to the top and bottom of the solenoid, removing those hoses, and plugging them into one another. One of the hoses has a male connector, and the other a female, so they will plug into one another and one of the clips from before can be used to secure the connection.

Just make sure to shut off the water to the unit before you unplug any hoses and have a towel to mop up whatever leaks out of the hoses as you shuffle them.

Edit: As long as your solenoid looks like this, you'll be able to plug the hose attached to the top white part into the hose attached to the bottom black part and secure it with the picture blue clip.

Easy low cost solutions would be to get a paint to closely match the counters. Paint the black splash area (and pack wall possibky but that might highlight the tiny window) in that color. Use a good sturdy kitchen paint that can withstand frequent washing.

Something brass, definitely. I would replace with something clean, round and simple like this or like this. I'd venture to guess that the original pulls were crap, because this one looks like it had the pulls replaced too.

I also say that new flooring should be your first priority. Maybe cream and warm gray vinyl tile or plank?

I think painting your wainscoting gray would look good. You could get some specific recommendations by googling paint colors for oak cabinets, but I'd say a creamy white for your walls and a greige for the wainscot. A stark black gray would clash.

For hardware I'd say an oil rubbed bronze with bin pulls for your drawers like this

I'd do formica countertops in Calcutta marble. You can do them without the standard 4 in backsplash and do tile instead (white subway, hex, or herringbone). They would cost waay less than 2k and look great, not fancy, but more fitting with your existing cabinets.

Instead of buying a new stove and fridge you could just replace your black microwave with a white one and it wouldn't stick out as much.

Yellow is a terrible idea. It will look dingy next to the grey-ish cabinets. I would either freshen the White on the walls or do a deeper medium grey.

Remove the curtain above the sink. Find a more modern pattern or go with white blinds with wide slats. If you want a pop of color, a solid bright yellow, blue or green would look nice in curtains.

Lol - no kidding. Too bad the distance between the two mounting holes (aka center to center) matches neither the boring nor overall width or length that is specified for the given product! Most of the amazon pulls require digging through the product reviews on a pull by pull basis because 'center to center' is used as a synonym for " the boring" and if the handle has any kind of angle, curve, or inset then those two values will not be the same. That is on the rare occasion that 'center to center' is even provided! Most of the time the title doesn't match the description. I am sure that if your hardware budget is $200 per dresser you don't have to worry about deciphering the websites I'm looking at...

I would say white cabinets (at least the uppers) would make it appear larger. Change the backsplash to a larger tile, maybe a glossy taupe/tan or interesting non-intricate pattern, just something that is not busy. You can also exchange the current knobs/pulls for some stainless steel modern handles sort of like these. The granite, sink, stove all look updated and great, so I would say definitely base your color scheme around that.

ETA: I wouldn't paint the lowers white, I personally like the look of different colored uppers & lowers, but that may not be your style. I would play off the colors in your granite for the lowers, if you do go that route. Nothing too "matchy-matchy" but something to tie the lighter color on top, to the lowers, if that makes sense.

You'd probably need to go to Home Depot and buy the perfect length screws in either case.

Worrying about thousandths of an inch on wood pieces is crazy, but ideally you will set your machines up to be as precise as possible.

If you knew that you could set your table saw to a perfect 90 every time, but it would take you an extra minute every month or two, would it be worth the trouble?

The same tool can also be used on a bandsaw, drill press, miter saw, etc.

The ability to quickly check your squares is a pretty big deal though. A set of machinist 1-2-3 blocks should be in every shop. Really, it's all the precision a woodworker needs*.

I have bought squares that weren't square, or have gotten dropped or otherwise knocked out of square.

Are you just looking to cover the screw/screw holes? Or the entire strip?

They are PVC adhesive screw caps. They are PVC so they are fine in wet areas, and just stick right on top of screw holes. I used them to cover screws in my vinyl windows, they work very well. They have their own adhesive, if you really want to get crazy with it, maybe use some caulk or silicone or something to apply them.



If you're looking to cover the whole strip, that's a different story. Could buy pvc planks or something, I used those on an outside window frame and with composite decking. They are just plain white and you can cut them with a circular saw to fit. Screw those in, then use the PVC caps for a cleaner look if you'd like...It's a pretty rough surface as-is, so it may not be pretty.

These were about $2 each. They look great, but feel very light weight. Good enough for a shop.

Even if. You just painted the front panel, would help it blend in next to the fridge. It may look cool with a recessed handle like this.

I would recommend buying these. They are quite affordable, and you can use them for several different tasks. You can use two of them to stand materials on end for walls( hug the wall with two blocks), and you can also use their weight to glue two sheets together to build up wall or roof thickness.

I found these on amazon - they look like stickers, so might not be exactly what you had in mind, but should do the job. I know Home Depot, lowes and Ace also carry a selection of diy furniture parts in the hardware section, so you might try there.

You realize nobody really uses honing steels anymore, right? Go buy try to buy one, and see what they're called. I actually had a hard time finding an old-school honing steel on amazon.
