Welcome. Its a big world of booze out there and it can be quite intimidating. My first and best suggestion is to find a good bar with a passionate bartender and let them take you under their wing. They can tell you about what they have in stock and will typically let you try a nip of this and a tot of that before committing. This way you get some tutelage and you don't have to buy a bottle of stuff you may not like. I realize in Utah this may be more difficult, but I understand there are clubs you can become a 'member' of in order to get this kind of experience.

Here is a tasting starter I wrote in another thread that will hopefully help with the appreciation side of things. Also, you don't need to store spirits in the freezer. It is a good way to weaken flavors, which is just fine if you have crappy booze and the flavors are bad. You on the other hand want the full complement of good flavors so room temperature is where you want to be. If you do like a little chill, I suggest these. They will cool your beverage and release a little bit of water, which leads me to my next point. For beginning drinkers the taste of alcohol can be overpowering and hide many of the nuances that are part of the experience. I like to bring out those nuances in one of 3 ways. 1) On the rocks with that ice I mentioned. 2) Splash of water dilutes the alcohol a bit. I suggest about a 2-1 or 3-1 booze-water ratio. 3)And soda. My personal favorite. The ice chills, you get the dilution effect, and the carbonation can really make some underlying flavors come through in a big way. I do this with almost every new spirit I come across in addition to trying it neat (room temp, nothing but booze). 1-2 booze to soda ratio. For added effect you can use a mineral water.

Here are some of my thoughts on the best of each category:

Vodka: Silver Tree (though booze snob that I am, vodka is the least interesting spirit.) Svedka is good too. Ketel and the like are over priced. The point of vodka is medicinal. It is supposed to be colorless odorless, and tasteless. In short :This is not the booze you are looking for

Whiskey: Leopold bros. Maryland rye, Bullit Rye, Jameson

Scotch: Laphroig 15 is my favorite, but for a good entry try either Dewars or Johnny Walker is fine.

Bourbon: Weller, Makers Mark, Bullit

Tequila: Casa Noble reposado Is my all time favorite. I work in a bar with over 150 tequilas so that is a question I get a lot. The best advice is to make sure that what ever you buy it is 100% agave. Reposado means a little time in oak. Anejo means more. Blanco means none. It will take some time and experimentation to find out if your palette likes oak or not.

Rum: Ron Zacapa 21 year, Appleton Estates, Oronoco, Sailor Jerry

Gin: Leopold bros, Magellan, G'vine

Wine: Beginning wine drinkers usually like big Argentinian malbecs on the red side and either creamy new world Chardonnays or Sauvignon Blancs on the white side. Oregon Pinot noirs are also popular. Rioja (red) and vihno Verde (white) are both underrated styles. (Dont worry if you dont know what I mean when I call a wine creamy. The person in the liquor store should get it and know what to grab.)

Beer: Like wine its a whole big world. I suggest buying a few brewers boxes. They are a selection of 3-5 styles from a single brewery in a 12 pack. Once you have a few favorites picked out head to /r/beer for more suggestions.

I'm my experience it's not minerals that make ice cloudy. Of course, dissolved substances can affect the quality and appearance of your ice but almost all the cloudiness is from air bubbles.

I have a couple different ice cube trays that are specifically made to make clear ice (they are ungodly expensive, like $40 to make one ice cube) this "true cubes" 4 ice cube tray https://amzn.to/2llib82 and the "peak" single ice cube tray https://amzn.to/2mUKU49. Both work on approximately the same principles, which I will try to explain as I understand them. I think it is helpful to link them because you can go see pictures of how they work.

They are both insulated large containers, with side insulation and bottom insulation (closed cell foam, I think). Then they have a mold you insert and a top mold with some holes. The clear ice forms on top. The middle ice in the mold below the top is just waste ice.

I believe the principles are as follows:

(1) If you freeze water quickly dissolved air and bubbles will make it cloudy. Therefore they are insulated so it takes like 12 hours to 24 hours to make one ice cube, very slowly.

(2) If you freeze water together in one block it will include air bubbles inevitably - so both these models have the ice "separated" halfway through by a porous divider so that the bottom of the ice is kept separate for the top. The top part is the clear part. The air bubbles move down somehow - I am honestly not 100% understanding the physics here since while ice is less dense than water, air bubbles are definitely less dense than ice. But when I take apart the mold the bottom part always has some air bubbles in it.


You still have you use pretty clean/pure water and some people say they have to boil as well. However, boiling water on its own is not enough to get clear ice - you have to freeze it in a special way.

FWIW if you are interested in the kits the peak ice maker is slightly harder to use/assemble and more expensive since it makes only one ice cube, but I feel it makes a better clear ice cube. That could be my own bias though because since it is more annoying I feel it must be worth the effort. Both are fine.

I'll just give you my generalize copy/pasta I usually hand out in situations like these so if you wanna read it when you got a chance, then you have it! Also has tips and purchase links for Amazon as well for different axolotl stuffs.


HOW TO CYCLE:

  1. Set up tank with clean conditioned water. 2. Add recommended amount of beneficial bacteria per label

  2. Add "waste" to the tank, so a little bit of say fish flakes ( they're cheap and you need a waste source since you DO NOT put a fish or axolotl in a uncycled tank. The flakes are gonna break down into ammonia. The goal with cycling is to get benefical bacteria to build up so they can change (eat) the waste & breaks down the ammonia into nitrite then finally break it down further into nitrate. All these chemicals can hurt axolotl.

  3. Test tank a couple days later with a testing kit ( avoid strips, they will lie to you and give false results) if there is ANY ammonia or nitrite present, you arent cycled. If there is no nitrate present either, you arent cycled.

  4. If you find ammonia or nitrite, take 50% of the water out and add clean treated water. Add more seachem stability ( benefical bacteria) ( add these each time you change water. Even if it's cycled)

  5. Add a pinch more flakes & Continue to do this until your tank is cycled. Meaning you have no ammonia, no nitrite and a presence of 40ppm or less of nitrate.



    Warnings:
    1.If your tank isn't cycled, you are going to chemical burn them with ammonia in the water. And they will suffer. Nitrate ( the final of the chemical process) can also burn the fish/axolotl. This is why we keep this number under 40ppm. If it is higher than 40ppm, change the water 75%.

  6. This beneficial bacteria lives in the filter. If you change your filter, you just ruined your cycle. Don't do this. If it gets nasty/clogged & you have to replace the cartirage, leave the old cartirage in with the new one for a few days so the beneficial bacteria can inhabit the new filter. If you can avoid replacing that, just rinse/gently squeeze out the filter in old tank water when you do clean the tank to keep from murdering the bacteria
  7. Letting the filter dry out will also kill a cycle.


  8. *NOTE: Most bottles of beneficial bacteria say they cycle a tank in a day. Cycling can take up to a month in some cases but usually just two weeks if you keep on it. This requires constantly monitoring, testing and replacing most of the water in the tank when you get high ammonia/nitrite levels. You need ammonia/nitrite to be 0 and nitrate to be more than 0. Definitely less <40. If all your levels are higher than this, or if nitrate remains 0, your tank isn't cycled.***


    Summery;
    So basically, cycling builds beneficial bacteria which makes these waste breakdown chemicals go through a cycle of breaking down into a less dangerous form which keeps fish/axolotl from getting sick/dying. ... Most new fish people don't do this. And fish store employees try & tell them just adding something like seachem stability fixes this. It doesn't. An uncycled tank is basically new tank syndrome and it kills animals.

    You still are going to need to keep an eye on chemical levels after the cycle..Occasionally different things can cause the cycle to "crash", like changing the filters or a high tempeture, or the filters becoming dry..

    Once your tank is cycled, and you have an axolotl, honestly it's not that much work. The cycles the worst part. I feed my adult axolotls once every other day, I change 75% of their water twice a month, and add water to top it off / spot clean occasionally two-three other times a month due to the water I lose due to evaporation.

  9. Air stone+ airline+ air pump ( cheap ones are at Walmart.
  10. Seachem stability ( beneficial bacteria)
  11. Seachem prime ( it's a water conditioner I just prefer seachem)
  12. A tank, 10 gallon minimum for 1 axolotl. But the bigger the better.

  14. Hides for the axolotl
  15. A syphon / water vacuum ( to suck out the poo/change water easy. I have a long food grade plastic hose I got from Ace hardware. I syphon and let it drain into the yard
  16. A bucket
  17. A Tupperware
  18. A fan. Literally any fan you can put on top the tank and point at it will work. I have a table fan sitting on top my tank and blowing at the water to help keep it cool. A chiller is best, but they are expensive.
  19. A tank thermometer ( don't get the thermometer strips, they lie

Yeah, that sounds like a bad ass Old Fashioned. There are a dozen legit ways to make this drink and have it still be considered an Old Fashioned. This one happens to be my favorite, but there's nothing wrong with more bitters or another twist or building it in the glass with smaller ice cubes. It's all about how you like it.

My husband and I love cooking, so YMMV, but we do a lot of freezer prep. I bulk cook, then freeze in Souper Cubes (freezer trays with one-cup portions) and pull out to make different meals. I keep a list on the fridge of what we have in the freezer so nothing is forgotten! For example, bolognese is great with pasta, zoodles, or in stuffed bell peppers, pulled pork makes a great sandwich if you make a side of slaw, curries just need some fresh rice and herbs, chilies get topped with some avocado and chives, and soups are wonderful with a green salad.

Almost any time I cook, I freeze a few portions for leftovers and we eat from the freezer often! I also use the Instant Pot and Slow Cooker a lot. I bought a few Slow Cooker cookbooks recently and have been building my repertoire of quick-prep meals. Again, extra get frozen!

I just want to second using the immersion blender! My cuisinart stick blender came with a chopper bowl attachment and it's absolutely perfect for blending up homemade baby food. I stick the blender right into the pot when I cook up large batches of baby food, and use the chopper cup when I'm blending up individual meals or smaller batches. I freeze everything in silicone ice cube trays in 1oz portions, and then store them in labeled zipper bags. Then just thaw as I go. It's super easy, and the homemade food looks and tastes SO much better than the jarred stuff. Like, actual vibrant colors and flavors, not overcooked and bland. You can also season things however you like (vanilla, cinnamon, cumin, ginger, fresh herbs, etc.) and it's way less expensive.

Not to mention that you'll get a ton of use out of a stick blender if you're any kind of a home cook. Homemade mayo, soups, sauces, fast whipped cream, etc.

I think you should buy the seeds and the strawberry plant! Get those babies growing! Or get those ice cube trays and make some iced tea ice cubes! I've been on a shoe kick (okay, wait, when am I NOT on a shoe kick) but treat yo'self to those awesome kicks.

As an avid Whiskey drinker I have never really enjoyed using whiskey stones. I have a set but they remain unused. If I am not enjoying my spirits neat I do however enjoy making use of ice spheres. I would love an ice ball press/machine, but they are not economically feasible when I can accomplish the same task for a fraction of the cost albeit not nearly as impressively. On aspirational ice

Personally I think the $99 price is ridiculous, especially considering the huge usability issues, and mess it makes. Gotta the love the sweet "deal" on Kickstarter where you get one at full retail price if you come in at the $99 level.

Regarding "most" reviews. I love Amazon reviews. They often provide some great humorous reading, and you can also easily spot the shill reviews who give fake 5 star, or 1 star reviews.

On Amazon, you can buy TWO Tovolo sphere molds for $11, or $5.50 each. I use the Tovolo big cube molds (around $8). They are painfully easy to use, and I just pop them in ziplock bags to keep them from picking up odd smells and tastes.

Now, granted the $400 original price point may have looked cheap when stacked up against the professional units that range from $500 to $1500, hence the tongue in cheek sales pitch to "billionaires". I just think the product is way overpriced and not much better than the one that sells for a little over five bucks. It also looks like a direct ripoff from the Cirrus press which sells for $699 (maybe that is a selling point). The Cirrus at least provides a way to deal with the overflow (unless running outside to place the device on a sidewalk is an enticing idea and part of the show).

Lastly, can someone please provide a scientific reason why "spherical" ice is better than a large block? I am willing to bet that a there is little difference dilution-wise between the two shapes, and it is more of an aesthetic one.

A cheap bar spoon is an awful experience. A decent bar spoon is fine. An overpriced barspoon is (generally) just overpriced metal. I make a lot of bitters myself or super small batch infusions, so having a set of mason jars on hand has been extremely helpful.

I use cheapo squirt bottles ( http://amzn.com/B007OM9W2E ) to store simple syrup or other infused simple syrup.

If you get super into infusions and stuff like that, I've heard a lot of good things about the iSi system; I have a friend with one, he absolutely loves his. I have to admit, it takes a lot of work and patience out of infusion. As well as whipped cream, or carbonating things, or what have you... now I might want to get one.

These two items are somewhat paired (at least for me) -- a water filter and an ice tray. For ice, I'm talking like the Tovolo King Size ice trays. Water filter -- doesn't matter, as long as it filters from what I can tell.

Something that's nice to have on hand so you can double-strain is a fine-mesh strainer. Can be harder to find on the cheap though, I ended up breaking down and going to a Bed Bath & Beyond for mine since everything on Amazon was fairly expensive the thrift shops near me didn't have one.

Get nice glassware. I remember when I was younger and someone demonstrated the importance of having nice glass when tasting wine. The same thing applies. This isn't exactly bar-tools, but it's critical to your cocktail experience. Drinking out of cheap glasses, or the wrong glasses, will really hurt the presentation and your perception of the cocktail. In essence, t's important to take pride in both how you make the cocktail and how you serve the cocktail.

I have accidentally made crystal clear ice in one of these and it wasn't boiled and it was from the tap. I have always wondered how that happened.
Again, I have tried boiling the water, but it didn't do what I wanted close enough. I have NOT tried boiling the water in the plastic tray or with plastic wrap on it. I didn't think that plastic wrap was not air permeable.
I will try to use these sphere ice cube trays I have and boil the water in the microwave and cover it in plastic wrap.
I did try to boil water, pour it in these trays, and I used a bar clamp to cinch the mold between two flat glass plates. I tried to make it airtight. Then, I froze that. It got a LITTLE clear, but not enough.
How close could I get with this? My question is...if it was YOU trying to make a solid sphere of ice that is as clear as possible, what would you do? Efficiency and utility aside. I was this purely for aesthetic purposes to impress my friends when we drink.

EDIT: I'm still willing to pay for something like this. A glass tray for ice that will allow me to microwave water and boil it safely, then with smooth edges that I can wrap plastic wrap around or clamp a rubber board on top of for freezing. If there is no top to the ice cube tray, I would imagine that glass wouldn't have an issue anymore and I wouldn't be worried about melting plastic or anything while boiling the water.

I don't really understand your question: you want a hot cold brew? You want a cold brew but want it warmer than it currently is?

If you're looking for a solid cold brew, I have the 1000ml Hario Cold Brew pot and this recipe is golden:

Pour 108g of coffee into the filter then place the filter in the pot. Pour filtered water through this filter until it reaches about a quarter inch from the top. Let it sit for 12-18 hours in the fridge. Remove the filter and discard the coffee. You now have a good concentrated base for iced coffee.

I plop a square ice cube in a glass, pour the concentrate and filtered water into the glass at a ratio of 1:1. I drink mine black but if you add cream/milk/flavoring, then change up your water with a whatever mix you want. Add sugar in at the end. Since this is cold, I recommend syrups over crystal sugar as you may find the crystal sugar settling at the bottom.

Been doing this for a year and have settled on this recipe being my fav. Good luck!

It was most likely the copper sulfate that did it :(

For the zucchini, I cut it up and blanch it first to soften it up, which is basically just boiling it for a few minutes but not fully cooking it, then rinse with cold water and stick them in the freezer. I like to lay them out on a plate first then put them in a freezer bag later on, otherwise they all freeze together in a clump. I use a veggie clip, and just stick it to the tank wall and it’ll thaw out quick once it’s in the water. I take out whatever hasn’t been eaten (if it hasn’t already been demolished) within a day or two so it doesn’t get gross in the tank

As for the gel, I use 1-2 tbsp of repashy soilent green, 1/2 tbsp of calcium carbonate power, 1 cube of frozen blood worms, and some boiled, dechlorinated water (2 parts water 1 part repashy powder). Then just mix together well and let it set 20-30 mins. You can cut it into pieces after it sets, otherwise I find it easier to pour it into these little molds then let it set:

Once it’s all set, refrigerate it and discard any leftovers after 2 weeks

Mystery snails eat a lot, but will always stop eating when they’re full and come back to the food later, unlike fish so don’t be worried about overfeeding. Besides making sure they get lots of nutrients, they’re pretty easy to care for and fun to watch. Good luck if you end up getting more!

A few things I could suggest;

  1. As already mentioned, the alginate bath is too weak. I shoot for 1%/wt alginate, meaning every 100g of water I add 1% sodium alginate.
    1.1. Similarly, the amount of calcium is not enough. I also shoot for 1%/wt on calcium on my flavor base. This has to be blended in, not whisked in.

  2. Once alginate is blended in w/ water, leave it alone as long as reasonable. I refrigerate mine overnight if I can. I hate to drop anything unless my alginate bath is at least 2 hours old. If not, there will be lots of tiny bubbles that will interfere w/ consistent reaction.

  3. If you can pre-make the flavor base, the easiest way to make big orbs is to freeze them before. But w/ fatty ingredients they may separate upon fully thawing, inside the membrane. They look cool when they do that, but the taste/mouthfeel would have to be judged subjectively.

    3.1. If freezing beforehand, a few things to try;

    3.1.1. Try to make the 'gnocchi' as thick' as possible to help them stay together

    3.1.2. Try to make the alginate bath a bit stronger, say 1.5%/wt to make it thicker as well.

    3.1.3. You can also leave them in the bath a bit longer, for thicker skin. Part of the challenge w/ this recipe is that there are quite a few fatty ingredients that will inhibit proper reaction. Letting them stay longer in the bath help to bridge over those fatty gap and develop stronger membrane.

  4. If dropping frozen orbs, I microwave the bath until they are about 110F. At this temperature it takes about 1 minutes to develop thick enough skin. You do have to watch out and make sure it doesn't freeze to the bottom of the bath. If this happens, you have to very gently nudge them off the bottom.

Kind of comment hijacking here, but just want to make sure you're aware there is an increased risk of bloat with raised bowls. This is definitely an awesome piece of DIY, just want to make sure people are aware of bloat. In very large dog breeds, 52% of bloat cases were associated with raised bowls. I find that I switch a lot between being really motivated to meal prep and then not wanting to do it at all. I've found that the best thing for me is to take advantage of when I'm super motivated and freeze a ton of meals. I got this thing called souper cubes that I use to freeze single servings of soup/chili/pasta sauce that I make in my crock pot. At any given time I have about 20 meals of various recipes in my freezer ready to go. Especially now that I've been doing this for a while, I have a ton of variety in there, so I rarely get sick of what I'm eating. I mostly take them for lunch at work, but I also use them for dinners when I don't feel like cooking or eating what I've prepared. I hope you can find something that works best for you!

That looks awesome! I really do feel that clear ice makes for a better cocktail taste as well as obviously the look of it. The way most of us make "craft" cocktails, its a detail that can be overlooked, but well worth the extra effort.

I got the below linked TrueCubes clear ice tray system and it works really well. Same concept (open cooler/keep the top/dispose the bottom) but they use a pair silicone inserts instead of having to cut at the end. It only makes 4 2"x2" cubes at a time but I just keep making them until I fill a large ziplock bag then I am good for a while. I have had it for a couple years and have used it countless times. Holds up really well.

Ok just to be really snobby... Old Fashioneds should always be made with one large ice cube. I use something like this but the spherical ice cubes are fun too. If you want to get even fancier, you should use purified water that's been boiled prior to freezing. That way the ice won't be cloudy. Just a friendly tip, cheers and have a merry Christmas.

Oddly enough, whiskey stones are actually one of the least efficient ways to cool your drink. Obviously the "cool factor" has been widely accepted, but you're actually better off with ice cubes (the best option if you don't mind them watering down your drink) or reusable ice cubes (almost as good as real ice, however they could hardly be considered "cool").

We as human beings are way too easily influenced.

Just a cool box and some of these the actual brand doesn't matter they're all the same. Water is tap water (we have good tap water in my area though, I'm UK) and it's best warm. Then I basically flip the moulds upside down so the air hole is at the bottom (forcing impurities out as it freezes) Also finally the cool box has to be deep so as to not have the moulds near the bottom of it and leave the lid off so it freezes from the top down. Sorry for wall of text, it took a while to get the process down so thought I'd save you the hassle. Oh shit yeah freezer on lowest setting, freeze time of approx 30 hours. Don't be tempted to peek lol. When you're done you'll have cloudy ice at the bottom and the balls should be crystal clear. Should. Lol

Whiskey drinker male here for far too long - so here are my two cents.

  1. Decanters are really kind of pointless. They can look cool but meh.

  2. Whiskey stones suck. I bought them and were really disappointed. Get these things. They fucking ROCK. (No pun intended.)
  3. This guy is basically THE voice on Whiskey. Great read. Unfortunately he has passed away but good guide for the future.
  4. For glassware I have kind of been interested in these just because they look awesome. I personally own these and they also get some great comments. I've personally never really found a shape that changes the taste so I just wanted something a little more flashy.
  5. I'm turning 30 this year and I bought myself a 21 year old bottle of bourbon and am getting it laser engraved. Things Remembered will do anything really so if you know what he likes (or just as an add in, doesn't have to be crazy expensive) maybe an engraved bottle.

Molecular Gastronomy Spherirication is really fun and sciency. I made little balsamic vinegar spears when I did it for a project but you can do it with fruit juice and then put them on ice cream. They are kinda like boba but much smaller. I used these pipettes to make the spheres (if you decide to do this, I still have a bunch and totally willing to send you some if you would like) It was pretty fun and I'm an adult. Also I have a simpler recipe but mine is specifically for vinegar...not sure if that matters...

I roast and freeze it.

Preheat oven to 400F

Cut of the tops enough to expose the cloves

Drizzle with olive oil (or a bit of chicken broth if you want lower fat)

Roast for 30 minutes or until brown and tender

Let cool, then squeeze garlic out from bottom of bulbs into a bowl

Put in ice cube tray and Freeze

*Once frozen, pop out of ice cube tray and put into Zip lock bag

Now you have chunks of delicious, sweet, roasted garlic to add to meals you cook or salad dressings, or whatever you like roasted garlic in.

I used the small ice cube trays that come with mini fridges
like the ones here

that way you can use a little or a lot depending on the size dish you're preparing

Don't buy him a bottle. Yeah of course everyone who drinks wants something to drink, but he will drink it and then its gone. Get him something that lasts, something that every time he drinks he will think about you and the gift. Ice cube trays and glasses are your best bet. There are also some places where you can get a phrase engraved on the glass as well, which is an added touch.

The 2 things that my whiskey can't live without are a nice double old fashioned glass (get more than one, they're cheep)
Crate and Barrel
And a nice BIG ice tray Tovolo King Cube

Don't get whiskey stones, they can hold flavor from one whiskey to the next, and my preference is a little water with my whiskey, hence the ice cubes. You can go for a Glencairn they are designed for whiskey, but in my mind i prefer the double old fashioned glasses, because they're more versatile.

Freeze it in 1/2 cup or 1 cup portions. My freezer space is always at a premium, so I opt for 1 cup portions since that cuts down on a little space and packaging. There are a few ways you can do this:

- Measure 1 cup of stock into each individual baggie. Then you know every single frozen baggie holds 1 cup. When you're freezing them, lay them flat and squeeze extra air out - will be better quality and store compactly.

- It's a little foofy but there is actually a silicone mold you can buy that makes it super easy to freeze things in either 1/2 cup or 1 cup blocks and then pop the frozen blocks into a bigger storage baggie. Convenient but a "unitasker". Up to you if the convenience is worth the cost and storing it. My two cents added to the mayhem, you should invest in a vacuum sealer and something like this to freeze portions in. It's great for portioning out food and avoiding freezer burn, I freeze large batches of meat, spaghetti sauce, chili, stew and so forth this way and it always stays good for months. Add a rice cooker and you can easily make a large quantity of tasty things that can be dumped over rice for an easy and stress-free dinner.

Tastes great in 10 year old rye whiskey.

Seriously.

Put it in a tray and smoke it at 225. Smoke sticks to cold things and wet things WAY better than hot things and dry things. That's why smoking salt takes so long to be effective. The ice will start to melt, but it turns in to ice in water, and the ice keeps the temperature down - the whole thing stays cold until the ice is nearly all gone, and even then water has a very high heat capacity, so it takes a long time to get hot. The evaporation rate is pretty low until the water gets hot, so all these things combine to mean there's really very, very little water loss from a couple of standard trays of ice after smoking for 3 hours. I refreeze into a couple of tiny ice-cube trays, because I don't like making my whiskey cold, but a little cool with some smoke is great, so small cubes are perfect.

Isn't science great?

I wouldn't ever recommend glass in the freezer unless it's the thick wide mouth jar but even then plastic is safer and has the flex.

There's nothing wrong with chilling your scotch in the fridge.

Some other options: distilled water ice spheres (I use this to make them) will water your scotch less than ice cubes due to physics I don't understand.

You can also chill the glass, like a frosted beer mug, but I would line the glass you are going to put in the freezer to make sure it doesn't pick up any film.

If you want to drink your scotch slightly chilled but not refridgerator temperature and that's worth shelling out for a wine cooler for you, more power to you, it's the best option, I think, for the effect you're looking for. But if the temperature out of the fridge is all right by you, you will not harm your bottle by refridgerating it.

It's easy!

  • Get one of these Coleman six-pack coolers
  • Get one or two of these Tovolo ice cube trays
  • Set your freezer so it gets nice and cold. -18C/0F should do it.
  • Cut some holes in the bottom of the ice cube trays. This is easier said than done since those things are really flexible ...I used a box cutter and cut square holes.
  • Remove the lid of the Coleman cooler (it's detachable)
  • Fill the Coleman cooler about, oh, 2/3rds to 3/4ths the way up. Just use regular cold tap water.
  • You don't want your cube tray sitting on the bottom of the cooler. Figure out a way to keep it off the bottom. I like to use a (cleaned, duh) cottage cheese plastic container that's about 1.5 inches tall and about 3 inches across. Anything, though, to keep your cube tray well off the bottom of the cooler.
  • Ok, float (well, sink) your ice cube tray until it's very lightly sitting on top of the spacer you used
  • Pop the cooler into the freezer. It'll take about 1.5 days to get frozen solid
  • After about 1.5 days take the cooler out of the freezer and pop the block of ice out
  • Use a bread knife to slice and dice. You'll find that you can't cut the ice very deep but if you score it and then tap the blade with a hammer or something nice and heavy then the ice will tend to split as you've scored it.
  • Once you've extracted your ice cube tray, pop those clear cubes out. You're a [adjective the cool kids use to describe cool people] now.
  • Hey, don't throw out all the ice that was around your cube tray! All that slag can be used for shaking or for your own drinks when you don't want to use the "good" ice.

    That's it. I've made hundreds of ice cubes this way and it's quite reliable.

Cool looking but not super practical—only one part of the bourbon is being cooled at any given time.

A good ice sphere will chill the whiskey more efficiently and melt nice-and-slow. I use these molds with distilled water and they work pretty well. (When the ice sphere finally cracks, I end up fishing out the smaller chunks so they don't dilute the drink.)

I have done the same with a home-depot bucket. Literally one of the easiest things to make. You don't need to make it air-tight like the instructions say since it is fog and it will go anywhere anyways.

Works great I have it spew out from underneath my bar which is the main focus point of the party. Makes the fog so much better.

There are some pretty good moulds ^(not an affiliate link) out there, though, but it takes a little practice to make perfect spheres with them, since you need to leave a little gap at the top for the ice to expand.

Better than that, is these. I'm currently using the second one every day, and the silicone lid is a miracle for trays that makes the long slim "ice cubes" for water bottle usage. Normally you have to be incredibly careful with those trays because the long slender slots slosh water everywhere, but the sealing lid works so well.

Coconut oil melts easily so it's not surprising you're dealing with a pot of liquid right now. My suggestion is to get a small ice cube tray like this style and just put enough liquid coconut oil to cover the colored silicone bottom. That's what I did when I made my own DIY Foria Relief suppositories and honestly for a sex/masturbation session you could use even less than I did in each well because it was too much for me. Then you stick the tray in the fridge and pop one out when you need some lube. It will only take a minute or less for that little nugget to warm to your body and melt when you're ready for it.

In general if it is something you are going to portion out and eat you are better off storing it portioned rather than in a huge batch to hedge against spoilage. I'd just pick a brand of plastic containers, preferably one's with good stacking / lid interchanging and store things that way.

I'm also a fan of, for liquids I'm going to freeze, using big silicone ice cube trays like https://www.amazon.com/Large-Silicone-Kitch-Giant-Cooled/dp/B013KZE0YI/ to freeze 1/4c or so quantities. Melt as many as appropriate.

But I wouldn't look to store it in a big vat unless I'm re-serving all of it at once.

Yeah, I have some mineral water that I sometimes try watering down my bourbon and I also have some of these ice ball molds to water down and cool the alcohol burn but I have found I prefer to have the full blast of taste and burn from a small amount of bourbon rather than dilute a larger amount. I feel like the point of ice is really the water, not necessarily the cold. Whiskey takes time to get cold, and the immediate melting of the ice helps open up the whiskey more. Something you can't get from stones.

The best investment in my opinion are king cubes. Larger surface area so it takes much longer for your drink to become diluted too fast.

Mocha Maca Keto Shake

  • scoop chocolate protein

  • pinch xanathan gum

  • 1 tbsp erythitol

  • 1 tsp gelatinized mixed maca root powder

  • 1.5 tsp-ish sugarfree instant coffee or mocha mix

    mix dry together

  • add water to cover mixture with a couple splashes of unsweetened coconut milk, mix til dry ingredients are soaked through

Get a large-cube silicone ice cube tray like this one. They're fantastic for Old Fashioneds, and anything on-the-rocks.

Just keep in mind that because they take longer to melt, they take longer to chill your drink. But it should keep it at a fairly consistent temperature.

Also, these take much longer to freeze, so you need to plan ahead (takes at least 4 hours in my freezer, I think).

The cooling effect is far greater than when I would put ice in the vase and I highly recommend it. Makes quite a difference (From what I've noticed, if you use small ice cubes packed to the rim), as the whole stem gets cold to the touch.

I am not fond of them. I received a set as a gift and I've only used them once. Stone on glass is an uncomfortable texture and I got a slight mineral-y taste from them.

I like these better.

I've owned a few different brands, and I recommend this one. The silicone cap is easy to peel off and it releases the sphere pretty easily. It can be a pain in the ass to ge the sphere out of some brands.

Also, I got mine at Marshall's, it was cheaper than Amazon.

Yes. I have these. They work very well. Rather than freezing a cylinder and then form it to a sphere, you can just freeze it to a sphere to being with.

Get these. Fill them with melted oil and then pop them in the fridge. If your bedroom stays cool enough, you can keep some nearby. When it comes time to play, pop one out. I’ve just directly inserted them into holes and let them melt during foreplay. Or you can melt them in your hands and spread them wherever necessary.

These silicone ice trays are no brainers. They're so cheap, I've keep two in the freezer so I'm never out. I have like 5 different ice ball thingies but they're so bulky and tricky to fill that I never use them.

It's all about the dilution. Using that store bought ice that has the hole in the middle is fine for cooling your drinks, but just know that there is a ton of surface area with those so it will dilute faster. You would have to gauge the amount you're used to stirring/shaking as to not over-dilute the drink. Knowing how long to stir/shake just comes with practice.

If you want to get more serious or have more consistent results, get ice trays, preferably the square ones like these and/or these.

I can taste the difference between ice made with filtered water and ice made with plain tap water.

I just added a couple of drops of peppermint flavor for the mint ones, and I used properly-cube-shaped silicone ice cube trays to get them prettily shaped. I just stuck the sticks in, stuck them in the freezer to get them hard enough to pop out of the mold, and then stored them back in the freezer until they were ready to deliver. Bagged them up like in the picture. You could presumably use any shape mold for the same effect, just as long as you could get the stick in.

I'm using the BIG 2" cubes. King Cube Trays on Amazon or even in stores, Target etc. Use a powered "frother" to mix, also sold at Target. This way you skip the "paste" step which isn't necessary, just use water and a few drops lemon juice. I get 3-4 grams in each 2" cube. Quick and easy.
