Many thanks for all the info -- if I, as another recent Guzzisti convert, can ever be of help, please don't hesitate to PM me. V pleased to hear it's same mounting set up, the wind fatigue is manageable until I'm spending hours doing 80 on the freeways here (as I'm sure you can relate to). Don't really like the look of any fairing on the bike, but it sounds like it's relatively easy to pop on/off
Alas at my height I'm reluctant to go to the racer clip-ons, as anything that would bring my hands further forward would probably increase my size problem. I'm halfway on the pillion seat just to have my knees in the proper position (where you have your pads). I've also looked in to dropping my pegs but popular opinion (AKA internet/forum queries) seems to indicate there is very little room on this model (about ~.5' on the clutch side). Oh well, time to start shopping for a 2nd bike :)
Like the sounds of your future mods, definitely want to see pics when you wrap the tank. In terms of the seat/grips - many say the stock seat is garbage, but I don't think it's so bad. At the same time, don't think you're missing out on much (and if you want, I'd swap mine for yours). The stock grips I wouldn't worry at all about (unless you like the look), they're really about as basic and boring as they come
In terms of your soft bags - the one quick fix I would say is get some Rok-straps these ones, just make sure you don't get the smaller size as they don't hold up well. Obviously you're limited in what you can do with those, but I think it's probably the best $22 I've spent on anything gear/equipment related. I used to almost always ride with a backpack on the back, but now I always strap it down. I didn't realize how nice it feels to be completely free on there and now I can't go back, even if it means taking the time to strap down before a <30m ride. I also, as needed, can now fill my backpack & strap something else down (example: went to Target recently and bought a few small things (into the backpack) but got an appliance in a box that was ~2.5'x1'x1', and I previously would not have been able to transport while riding (definitely not in the backpack, and probably not in most saddle/tail bags either) but I just strapped it down and rode from Long Beach back to Santa Monica w/ it no problem). No mods needed, you just loop em through the passenger bars underneath the rear of the seat. It also would probably be even more useful for you than I, as I have less room on the back half of the seat as per my earlier height issue comment. For multi-day rides you'll probably still want double bags, but for <1-2 day rides you will thank yourself and me
The ECU re-map just changes the fuel injection configuration (I will assume you're talking about Todd/GT's remap, but if it's something else then let me know) from stock - although Todd recommends (and performed on my bike) adjustments to the evap cannister and tip valve accompany it. I got the remap now as: it is borderline mandatory after changing exhaust hardware, I'm planning to get new exhaust in the next month or 2, Todd already had my bike in his shop for my 600mi service, and Todd will do free re-maps for 12 months after initial purchase (so I'll get it done again once I buy the megs from him). I'll admit that the change (while still on stock exhaust) is not massive, but probably still worth the $350 it cost (think it's $500 if you can't bring it in, but probably still worth it IMHO). It's extremely smooth when I cold start the bike now (before, 1 in 10 times it would die, even when it didn't die the revs didn't sound quite right and would bog down until warm). Torque is more even, especially noticeable in 1st gear (making heavy traffic, low speed filtering much more manageable / less jerky). 6th gear is much better as well. Think there may be a small overall power improvement across the board, but it's hard for me to say for sure as I only had ~750mi on it before the change was made
Sorry for the long ass post but I'm not very good at being succinct
As others have said you can do this with a relatively small setup. There is a LOT to consider - HOW portable, HOW efficient, etc etc. Help me out if the below suggestions don' t meet the need I can piece together just about any system for you :P

You could get by on a small sealed lead acid battery designed for uninterruptible power supplies. They range in size but average 9 amp hours. I say get yourself a little 35 amp hour and never worry about discharge rate if you are only powering the win2 even if the sun don't shine that day. For the solar - buy BIGGER than you need - learned this the hard way with my truck camper. Right sized is great until the season changes or its overcast etc.

Check out this little starter kit - it includes the solar panel and charge controller:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DCDZOI0/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_2ehvCbKCNM5MT

Down in the frequently bought together you should see a 35ah battery - will fully charge the win2 a few times and not even feel it:
https://www.amazon.com/85980-D5722-Sealed-Battery-UB12350/dp/B001VV0318/ref=pd_bxgy_2/135-2046487-8709925?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B001VV0318&pd_rd_r=f062a34c-263c-11e9-b2b2-83751d0b2340&pd_rd_w=Nxcwh&pd_rd_wg=KqE5I&pf_rd_p=3f9889ac-6c45-46e8-b515-3af650557207&pf_rd_r=KWC3NGMZ50M5TJWJ1STT&psc=1&refRID=KWC3NGMZ50M5TJWJ1STT

12v car charger that I use with the win2 - works great:
https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Anker-PowerDrive-Adapter-MacBook/dp/B071WYF9HP/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1549038482&sr=8-3&keywords=anker+pd+2+car+charger

Plenty portable depending on your needs. Its almost as easy as color coding to setup. You can power the win2 and multiple devices if you so choose. Expandable at a later time if you choose with panel and batts. Will fit in any trunk or backseat. Hell it will fit in a big backpack (panel is 21x26). Large enough charge current to top off your battery quick even in partial sun - big enough reserve to keep you going for a couple days easily. This is just an example of an 'easy' bundle if you wanna save some more money I can show places to get these items cheaper.

If you wanna talk more DIY and are not afraid of LI-ION 18650s you can build you a safe lighter and denser battery for pretty cheap. It would be piecing together a charge controller and panel but I would say stick to 50w range - affordable and covers your power needs even in less than ideal conditions. If you wanna go more expensive but more portable flexible/foldable panels are out there too.

The caps are not reverse threaded. If the bolt is stuck on, use some WD-40, but if you can get ahold of Kroil, that'd be even better. Just put some around the edges, and let it seep in. Leverage is your friend use it, and if you have to, use a mallet to give the key a little love tap to break it free. Make sure your Alen Key is not rounded, if it is, grind it down, or even buy a new one. If the cap is rounded, you'll have to use a torque key in a size equal or above the equivalent alan key size. They are your best friends when removing rounded bolts.
It looks like your crank arm puller is missing the top cap, and or might not be long enough. So when you're tightening the handle, it's not actually pushing against anything. All crank pullers do, is push/pull the crank off of the spindle. You might need to get a little Macgyver.
Just as a side note: Bottom brackets are revers threaded on one side. A trick to remembering what's what: when you pedal, you're loosening the BB, same with pedals. It's designed that way so that you never over tighten the threads from riding.
I've been riding on the road up to the day the snow sticks to the ground.
Then, once the lakes freeze over solid, I ride on the ice for fun.
Trick one: Face/Neck protection
This $9 face mask cut just below the eyes makes the perfect face and neck guard.
It's thin so it fits perfectly under a snug helmet.
It's windproof.
It's waterproof. Condensation builds up on any face mask/balaclava.
Trick two: Fog Free visor.
Cheapest and easiest way is to crack the visor open a bit. 1/4" gap.
This may seem dumb but it helps keep the visor frost and fog freeze.
A heated visor works but limits your vision a bit and you have to get used to a new helmet.
I bought an older model year helmet with a heated visor for winter riding for $185.
Here's an even cheaper priced helmet.
Third trick: Wind protection for your hands.
A wind-break for your hands really helps when it gets cold. ATV Bar Mitts are the pinnacle of windproof/waterproof hand guards. With heated grips, you could ride barehanded.
The elephant ear type are pretty good as well if you already have handguards. Cheap and expensive wind protection.
No problem, I wish you luck with your project!
Depth of discharge is definitely important for battery longevity. The more 'shallow' your discharge cycles are with any sort of Lead Acid chemistry, the longer the battery will usually live. :)
Also, if you're going to go over ~300-400 Ah of battery storage (rated) consider making the change to a 24 volt system before you start ordering components. The reason for this is to ensure you don't end up using cables the size of your arms to carry the current you need. When you double the nominal battery bank voltage, you half the current being carried by your conductors in that circuit, thus reducing the needed wire size. It doesn't sound like you'll need to go with a 24 volt system though, as you won't really need that much storage, or that much solar.

Remember:
Voltage x Amps = Power in Watts
Power in Watts x Hours = Energy in Watt-hours

>What do you think of the Optima BlueTop? They are more money than most AGMs, but they claim superior number of recharges. I can get the 66Ah at Costco for $299CAD. But I'd probably need at least 3 of these.
Try something like this instead:
https://www.trojanbattery.com/solar-agm-2/
Avoid 'marine/starter' batteries like they tend to sell at Costco and auto parts stores. (Optima BlueTop included.) They're designed to be a hybrid of a 'starter battery' (for a motor) and a 'deep cycle' battery for running electrical equipment. They will not live as long as something that is designed purely for deep cycling like the Trojan Solar AGM's, or even these Renogy ones: https://www.amazon.com/Renogy-Battery-Marine-Off-grid-Applications/dp/B075RFXHYK/
EDIT:
Renogy also makes a gel-cel equivalent of that one, here:
https://www.amazon.com/Renogy-100Ah-Rechargeable-Cycle-Battery/dp/B01KN6QUW2/
EDIT 2:
By the way, there are some differences between Gel-cel lead acid and AGM lead acid batteries, but they are both non-spillable (Sealed) battery types, that come in 'true deep cycle' varieties. :)

Easy way to tell if it's a 'hybrid' battery type (designed for use where it will start an engine at times), is to check if it has those 'automotive style' post terminals. The ones that you find on your car battery. 'Marine' batteries that have both automotive and screw termainls, like those BlueTops, are not quite ideal for use in a solar application.
Hey y'all! Some of you asked about mods so here is a full list of what I have done so far with links.
Radiator guard - Has a nice little FZ-07 etched at the bottom.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075MCXCM7/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Shorty levers - Mine are gray but they come in lots of colors.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0197N3KA2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Bar end mirrors - You can find these for less but I chose these because the reviews indicated that they might be better quality than others.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q3UL6S6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Yoshimura fender eliminator - Kinda pricey for what it is but it looks really nice.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T6J9IM2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Motodynamic integrated tail light - I also looked at the TST but after looking at some videos decided on this one.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015NN3YUG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Proton 500 flush mount LED - These things are brighter than the sun. You can also change the signal pattern which I thought was cool.
http://www.hightechspeed.com/products/Proton500/yamaha.html
Flasher relay - Prevents hyper flash and let me get rid of resistors.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RM26LXO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Stompgrip volcano black - I really like these and they have great grip. You can also get them in clear from their website if that's your thing.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018NH74BE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Akrapovic TI - This exhaust sounds sweet, I also purchased the CAT for it through cyclegear.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L44J56G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Other mods that i'm considering in the future
Stainless Steel braided brake lines, FTECU on the bike flash kit, T-Rex Racing no cut combo.
Bonus - https://i.redd.it/en8vfnpv46u01.jpg
I've got a Honda 919 (hence the name :D). Naked standard with a retro 'hoodlum' look. I got a nice size tank bag that holds the CamelBac backpak and other stuff.
They are kinda like these: https://www.amazon.com/Cortech-8230-0305-36-Black-Super-Saddlebag/dp/B008Q5J6UG
But bigger and square shaped. The outer part of them expand with a zipper to about 2X the size. If you put a bracket between them, below the seat where the rear fender would be, they can handle some pretty good weight. I lock mine under the seat and have a net and straps in case things are larger.
What I want now, is a fold down cloth bag that has rigid foam that folds out to cover the rear seat and attaches to the bags, for things like pizzas and larger orders.
Basically if you look at a truck organizer, but with rigid foam board for the side and have it break down for storage.
Like this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Collapsible-Folding-Trunk-Organizer-Caddy-Car-Auto-Truck-Storage-Bin-Bag-New/107440840?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=709&adid=22222222227042534523&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=107048086637&wl4=aud-566049426705:pla-172685740638&wl5=9032530&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=112343202&wl11=online&wl12=107440840&wl13=&veh=sem&gclid=CjwKCAiA7vTiBRAqEiwA4NTO67bl_-NI_2bkPKGVcqfSdeBWjlj5e9VwqcxFAD3_xZcaUMIjvy6bahoC4z8QAvD_BwE
But smaller and add some foam sides and straps.
Here's the deal. It costs me about $0.08/mile or so to ride for gas. We get $0.58/mile for tax write off for regular maint. So far, it looks like most of my earnings are tax free, meaning (if I understand it correctly) I have about as much write offs as I have earnings. So the game is, best MPG you can get and most orders in the least time you can get.
If you get to $15/hr after taxes, account for gas, etc... You're close to maybe the $20 gross earnings range. Meanwhile, I'm riding around listening to music and getting food for people... Laughing at people stuck in traffic :D
That's a tight budget. It is possible but you don't have room for $1000 mistakes.
It isn't really hard if you want a small system in the range of a Suaoki or Yeti. They are 400 watt hours. Divide watts by volts to get amps. 400 ÷ 12 = 33.33 They actually contain a $65 35 amp hour battery like this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001VV0318/
That is not compatible with a 12 volt efficient fridge. It is too small. It's simple but it won't work past the first week.
You can get a 100 amp hour battery, 3 times the size, for about $100. A 100 watt solar panel for $100, a $12 to $20 charge controller, and you have a system that can run an Alpicool C20 little efficient 12 volt compressor fridge, $250. There are you tube videos about the Alpicool.
In addition to that you need some AWG # 10 wire, fuse holders, fuses, a $10 multimeter, a $10 hydrometer and as needed sockets for USB, cigarette lighter sockets, led lights and switches. You'll need a cheap crimper and an assortment of crimp terminals. That's a total of $600, including fridge.
For charging laptop and stuff search on amazon for "car charger" and your computer brand and model. They run off 12 volts and are more efficient than double conversion 12 to 120 then 120 to 19. They go 12 to 19. If you have a device where you can't find a car charger then you need an inverter. Smaller is better.
If you want a system big enough to have all the electricity you want, double the solar panels and get a pair of 6 volt golf cart batteries.
Seems like a car, marine, or deep cycle battery of 32 or more amp hours would do the trick. You'll have to evaluate your purchasing options, but I'd recommend getting sealed lead acid deep cycle batteries of some flavor.
This is a good deal:
http://www.amazon.com/UPG-D5722-Sealed-Battery-UB12350/dp/B001VV0318
My reasoning for that sizing is that 200w for an hour is only 16ah at 12v, so double that to prevent yourself from overdischarging the battery and you should be good.
If you want to double up on size, I'd recommend just buying a larger battery from the start and avoiding the complications that multiple batteries bring into the picture.
The solar panels seem to output around .9a, really depends on your insolation numbers but 5 hours of usable light gives you around 4.5ah per panel or perhaps around half an hour of TX time per day of charging.
Get locking luggage. It's not cheap, but once you have it you'll wonder why you ever rode without it. Givi makes great stuff, but you pay for it. There are much cheaper options that work just as well, for example I've had this case on my V-Strom since '08 (~30K miles) without any problems. Givi is pretty much the only game in town when it comes to affordable locking side cases though. I use their E21 side cases: they're the narrowest side cases they make. You can stuff a jacket into the e21, it's snug but it'll fit.
I have these ones (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00WM3WDXA/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and they're great.
Super bright and clear as day. Everyone that rides with me is always impressed.

Is the frame steel? I use a breaker bar to put about 100 ft-lbs on the lockring on my aluminum MTB's and they don't come undone.
That looks like it will be an insanely fun bike, please upgrade the brakes as fast as you can. I also recommend bright lights on every e-bike. I've been receiving much more respect since mounting two of these. They work day and night to disrupt some drivers' dangerous maneuvering. And the good drivers seem to appreciate the match of speed with lighting.

It's crazy how stealth the Bafangs are in practice.
Yeah, I have the Sunpie head lights and fogs. There have been some mixed reviews on them, but they have been really good so far over the last month, requires some splicing, and the high beams flicker a bit, but overall they've been great for the price.

I suggest securing the backpack to the bike (shouldn't be a problem with the rack I see there). This will keep fatigue levels down, as well as general comfort and safety.
If you are interested, look into Rok Straps - I have been using them for decades and they have never failed me and are simple to use. Happy riding!
I knew I couldn't be alone in my neuroses about shifter marks on my boot (what I like to call "shift toe"). Every now and then when I think about getting new boots I try and see if anyone has had any experience with how it holds up to a motorcycle toe shifter, but I never see anyone make mention of it.
Your post reminded me about it, and finally got me to do a search. Turns out they make toe shifter guards, like this one. I also see through Google image search that there seem to be more robust ones, including ones made out of leather. Of course, I don't know if that would help with any dent it makes in your boot. I mean, like others have said, you could take pride in the wear/tear on your boot. But, I know for me, it's the asymmetrical nature of the "wear" that would bother me.
I have funky shaped acrylic (plastic) glasses, but these fit them perfectly! I'm a virgin burner as well, but the few veterans I know highly recommended them.
Yeah I got the 2013 model, the one I linked to you is the updated version that has double capacity. Mine gets at least 20 miles, this one would do 40 no problem.
It is a nice bike, has shocks, rear light on the battery and disc brakes. The brakes are crazy good, it can stop instantly. I upgraded the tires with flatless marathon plus, installed a bottle cage and an awesome Crampbuster throttle assist, since the twist throttle can cause you to cramp up after a while. You can get extra batteries and saddle bags if you want.
Pedego's a great bike company. The bike looks nice, rides nice, and has good components. By comparison my prodeco is much more basic. But the prodeco will get you more range. I don't know if you want to sacrifice range for stylishness, but if you do that pedego's not a bad way to go. Way better than the izip anyway.
Don't get that ugly thing. Get a slipstreamer spitfire. They're not expensive and they look great on Hondas.

Something like that I assume? Quite honestly, I don't see the point. If he has proper motorcycling boots, it won't be an issue. Hell, my boots are white leather and they still look fine after 3 years. If he isn't wearing proper boots, maybe lead him that direction instead, because it'll look way better and be safer too.
Additionally, you'll have better luck in /r/motorcycles
2010 Phantom here. I got pretty much everything on amazon, save for the seat and bags.
I just got done installing a Memphis Shades Batwing with lower deflectors, and a Ultimate seat with backrest on mine a couple weeks ago. The 6" recurve/spoiler windshield I ordered for the batwing is a bit to short for me (I'm 5'8"), which causes wind buffeting around my helmet. I'm still debating on going for a 9" spoiler or 11" standard. The seat, while being a bit more firm, is a lot more supportive than the stock one. I haven't had the chance to test out the backrest yet, but it seems like it will make longer trips much more comfortable/tolerable.
The Viking Bags I got for it should have been a bolt on affair, but they conflicted with the shock and seat so the bike is actually at a local shop right now getting them installed and the turn signals relocated. I should have ordered the shock cutout versions, but didn't check until after the return date, oh well, live and learn.
I'll take a photo and post it here when I get the bike back. If all goes well it should be tomorrow or wed.
Some other universal things I installed myself were Grip Puppy comfort grips, motorcycle bar phone mount, bluetooth remote control with bar mount.
. 3M High Reflective tape. This stuff is incredible if you ride at night.
. Top case with extra brake light. The extra storage is super handy, and the extra light and surface area make you easier to see. Plus, you can apply more highly reflective tape to the flat black parts of the case!
. New full face helmet, from a good brand, and with good reviews.
. Full tune-up with oil change, air filter, spark plug. Check your brake pads, tire pressure, and tread depth while you're at it.

Yea I agree with this. You could make it work but the reality is that its just not fun for long stretches on the interstate. By adding a windshield and replacing the rear sprocket on my Drz with a 39 tooth I was able to cruise comfortably a little bit faster. But eventually the commute just turned into a chore and I found myself not riding with my full attention, which led to a few sketchy situations with other commuters. Now i'm commuting in the car until I get a new bike, and keeping the drz for what it does best.
2012 DL650A owner here. The Suzuki version of the SW-Motech mounting racks that we have are actually not quite standard - at least, the trunk rack isn't. Suzuki modified it specifically because they don't want you to to be able to easily mount the box without buying it from Suzuki. Canadians got more color selection and the trunk came with the bike, not sold as a ridiculously overpriced after-purchase addon. Bastards. I just got one of these instead:
http://www.amazon.com/Bestem-T-Box-TBOX-929-BLK-Motorcycle-Scooter/dp/B001O77CMW
Way cheaper, only have to drill 1 hole in the adventure rack and you can attach the bestem rack with the hardware that's included. Super easy and sexy.
$139 or time to upgrade the set and save hers as a backup? I’ve gotten good use for three years on the SMH10 set I bought with another rider in my group. A third rider has a Sena 20 and it more easily plays music and switches back to intercom.

That’s what I used according to my amazon purchase history. I swapped mine when I installed oxford heated grips nearly a year ago and honestly, I usually don’t even remember I swapped it lol. But you will notice right away at first.
If you are careful you can save the stock grip using compressed air and lightly prying under it with a flathead screw driver or something similar.
Thank you so much for the information, I'll have to measure it out when i get home.I had intended to start with 1 and work my way up to 4 if it worked well.
So Batteries, probably the most technical portion of this part. So looking at [this] (https://www.amazon.com/Renogy-Battery-Marine-Off-grid-Applications/dp/B075RFXHYK) There is a lot of words in here that are challenging me. Whats the best way to assess what would actually be needed for the job? Can you chain multiple if you exceed capacity on 1 battery?I should take an electrical class...

All the stuff I bought was in the super 2.0 line, it was well made stuff
Went with the simple TST industries, not to sure if i'll like the only top bolt mounts but we will see.

I also have a very narrow face, and found that these fit me well the last 2 burns. Added bonus, they have transitions lenses (get darker in daylight and clear at night) and cost $17.
I can't recommend the R6 throttle tube mod enough. I did the mod last weekend and have been riding for a few days with it in place and it is glorious. The best $9 I've ever spent.

I don't like wearing backpacks and thought that simply covering my shifter was easier than carrying extra shoes. If this product existed (http://www.amazon.com/Shifter-Skinz-Motorcycle-Protectors-Accessories/dp/B001036KGO) I would have certainly purchased it. Seems like a nice compromise.
Yeah, it's a Slipstreamer. Specifically, this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000GTUM9O/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?ref_=pe_385040_121528360_TE_dp_1
Installs very easily, stays put, comes off easily, and looks like it was made for the bike. I would def recommend. I probably prefer the looks of a bike without a screen, but it makes a big difference in comfort when riding at higher speeds.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B011LTAV7K/ref=mp_s_a_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474744308&sr=8-1-spell&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=guare+dog+goggles
I run these with no problems. They fit my wider frame glasses a tad snug but offer a good seal and are comfortable
https://www.amazon.com/Guard-Dogs-Goggles-Evader-Matte-FogStopper/dp/B011LTAV7K
you should consider these. Never cheap out on eye protection. you and I both have glasses so I know how hard it is to play with fog, but trust me. Even other goggles with good ventilation and fans or a combination of both are a really good investment. Also, most fields have a ban on mesh eye protection so The mask limits your choice of fields.
I have these-
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008Q5J6UG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Not sure if they're available in the UK- They're good bags for the price, fit the grom nicely
Personally, I have a heal/toe shifter, so upshift wear not an issue I have to be concerned with.
You could try one of these to save the top your shoe.
*I think I've posted this link 3 times ITT. I have nothing to do with this product, company or Amazon. I just know they exist and thought they may help some here.
Get one of these for your helmet: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003FHLNVK/
That plus earplugs might be enough. Possibly more effective than a new helmet, certainly cheaper, and if you like the helmet you already have...
Just to jump in on what /u/kittennought has said, you do NEED a good jacket, boots etc. If you're worried about carrying gear around, invest in a topbox to store your helmet and jacket so you don't have to carry them around with you. Unfortunately heavy gear is part of owning and riding a motorcycle. Also, make sure that you get boots with ankle support. Jeans are okay, leather/armored trousers are better.
I bike through the winter up until a certain temp cutoff. My no go temperature is colder than -12. Anything warmer and I'm going.
With the right gear it's actually nice, and your commute to work turns into an adventure every day, and you feel like you're on an expedition conquering the elements.
bike setup: i have a single speed 1970's road bike that i use in the winter. I have 32mm studded tires on it for icy conditions.
https://www.amazon.com/Kolpin-Geartector-Mitts-Black-92185/dp/B001Q4YMXA
I use these ATV bar mitts because they are way cheaper than bike specific ones. I wear thick gloves inside of these when it's below zero.
base layers: you need wool or synthetic long johns as the base layer and wool socks. when really cold i double up
pants: I have winter biking pants that are lined with fleece and windproof on the front. get some chinese made ones on amazon, just make sure you get the really big size
top: so on top of the base layers, I have a soft shell jacket that breaths a little. when less than zero, sometimes there will be a fleece under that
boots: I have undersized snow boots I ride with, using flats for pedals. If you have the jack and ride clipless, look into 45nrth boots
face: balaclava, and when really cold, I wrap a scarf around my head too. I used to wear goggles but they would freeze up so I just stopped and let my eyelids freeze shut every once in a while.
that's about it.
> SVT-40
Is most glorious Russian Rifle.
Will not care if allthread rod is used to remove stuck round fired by filthy capitalist.
Also appreciates lubrication with most glorious KROIL prior to hammering.
I've been really happy with the OverBoard Dry Duffel and ROK Straps for my motocamping setup.
But I have a nice rack to strap down to. Your CBR might not be as accommodating without some other add-ons.
As you might see in my other post, I recently picked up a Nighthawk as my new daily. She runs great but my commute is 45 miles of highway each way every day, and with recent wind storms in my area it has been brutal. So I think I'm going to put a small windshield on and could use some recommendations.
I've poked around online and it looks like there wasn't an option for any kind of factory windshields or fairings that I can find, so I was thinking of something like this. Just big enough to provide a small amount of cushion against the gusts. Are there better options/brands/deals?
It is unlikely that you will be able to power a heater with solar power; heaters simply require too much electricity. A sleeping bag rated for the temperature you will experience is probably the most effective thing for you.
A quick look at Amazon shows the Nintendo switch has a wall outlet power adapter that outputs 5v at 1.5a. Assuming that is correct, you can charge your electrical devices from a wall outlet at McDonalds or Starbucks, or from a cigarette lighter adapter in your car. If you won't be in cities or won't be driving daily, a small solar panel and battery (I like that battery for its dual inputs, which makes it charge twice as fast) will likely be sufficient. Price for solar panel and battery about $100.
If you need more electrical power, put a roof rack on your car, then buy a battery and a 100-watt kit from Renogy (the kit includes mounting hardware, cables, a solar controller and instructions to wire everything together). Price for solar panel kit and battery about $400.
It's a huge difference! This is the one I bought. Super affordable. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000GTUM9O/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I bought the sport Dowco cover off Amazon and the fit is very good. The material feels very rugged and it's waterproof. It also comes with a little bag so you can roll up the cover and transport it. A bit pricey but I recommend since my bike is stored outdoors.
Link to product.
Unless your commutes consist of you pinning the throttle and soaring through neighborhoods / highways at speeds of 100MPH, I'm sure you'll find yourself enjoying the FZ07.
If your commutes do consist of that kind of riding, I would recommend getting a wind screen and replacing the throttle tube with this. That way your arm isn't underneath the fucking bar when wide open.
Edit: note: the tube on Amazon will say it is incompatible with the FZ07, ignore that.
Before I got contacts I used Guard-Dogs goggles Evader 2 they fit perfect on my big glasses.
Not OP, but I just installed a set of similar halos and they look amazing. I'll post pics as soon as I get unlazy.
You will almost certainly need a generator or a running car as /u/Laymanism mentioned. A dual halogen worklight will draw about 1000 watts [1]. A car battery will hold about 18 AH at 12 V [2]. Even with a perfect inverter you would only get about 12 minutes power. You could hook up a bunch of batteries in parallel, but I would recommend a generator and a long extension cord.
Proper fit would be the most important thing to focus on. Get a Snell/ECE Full face (or modular) to minimize noise and maximize protection.
I would be worried about long term hearing damage from the extended exposure to wind noise. I never ride without earplugs, either some custom fit plugs I got at a gun show, or from a [box of disposeables](https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Honeywell-Disposable-MAX-1/dp/B0013A0C0Y/ "A box will last you for years"). You may also want to look into a Windjammer to further reduce wind noise.
To help with visual acuity, consider getting multiple visors and a helmet where changing visors is easy. It's simple enough to try visor removal and replacement in-store to weed out the bad ones. Think dark smoke when it's sunny, yellow for glare, and pinlock-equipped for when it's foggy. You don't really want to mess with goggles for the highway.
I'd stay away from brimmed dual-sport style helmets, the brim can act as a sail and cause discomfort at high speeds.
Consider adding a Bluetooth intercom system if you want to listen to podcasts, navigation prompts, or other entertainment during your long trips. Higher end helmets can be fit with nice, integrated systems.
For color choice, statistically, wearing a white or hi-vis colored helmet will tend to reduce SMIDSYs.
My Dowco cover works perfectly fine on my bike.
Kroil like this?
Does it really work that much better than hoppes?
Looks sharp! Did you use the same process for the plastics as you did for the tank?
Also, looks like you're going for a really clean look, you should consider integrated brake light turn signals and flush mount turn signals
Dowco Guardian
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HS1356/
So far I've had it for 6 months and it's holding up great. Waterproof and it fits perfectly. We had a nasty wind storm with 40-60mph gusts and it didn't get knocked over either.
I have a 2016 and when I first got it home I had a real issue with lurching and choppy throttle response. I did a little reading and found out it was pretty common and that most people fixed it by changing the throttle tube.
Amazon says I bought this, although the description and price are a little different now than when I bought it.
Swapping the throttle tube was night and day. The bike responds like it should when you twist the throttle and there is no longer a choppy feeling when I shift.
I have a pair of these I really like them as they're good for day and night. However only can wear them with a 3/4 or 1/2 helmet. Lasted me about 2 seasons before the foam started to deteriorate.
I picked one of these up last year and it helps a bit, especially in winter. I took it off to install lightmode, but I have better earplugs now
https://www.amazon.com/WINDJAMMER-REDUCES-Helmets-original-copied/dp/B003FHLNVK
If you're running experiments, try Kano Kroil. I haven't had the problem you are dealing with, but it is an excellent bore cleaner and lots of folks swear by it.
I've heard some good things about Windjammers or similar helmet skirts. I have yet to try one though. Personally, I get a lot of wind noise from right behind my jaw, so I get the sense that something like this would cut a lot of it out.
I've heard good things about the Spitfire. I'll probably pick it up. Handlebar mounted, which I like.
Adding Grip Puppies to heated grips will extend the life of the grips indefinitely. And it makes them much more comfortable.

[Dowco Sport](Dowco 50124-00 Guardian WeatherAll Plus Motorcycle Cover, Black - Sport https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HS1356/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2jqhybA3R5WQJ) is the best cover in my opinion for storage inside or outside a residence.
For use while commuting to work or just a dust cover i'd suggest this Nelson Riggs
I use the Dowco to cover the bike outside my apartment, and the Nelson when i'm commuting to work because it compresses into a tiny little bag and fits in a small backpack.
partzilla.com is really good. Cheapest prices usually and fast shipping. 5SL-26240-01-00 is the part number for the r6 throttle tube I found out. I opted for the motion pro version of the r6 tube since it was half the price on amazon and should be the exact same as the stock tube. http://www.amazon.com/Motion-Pro-01-0094-Throttle-Sleeve/dp/B000WJ7OIA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
You need to give more info:
Is this a dual battery system charged by your alternator while moving?
Will you use solar to recharge?
What type of trailer and how much “stuff” will be running?
Will you move the trailer every day or use it as a home base?
How much room do you have? (For 1 battery, 2 batteries, etc)
These are just a few questions to start.
Based on a guess (external, camper mount, and road trip), you can use a vented, marine, deep cycle like this: Duralast 29DP. And that will support some LED light strands, and a small fridge for a night or two, possibly more.
Based on my own application (usually daily charge from an over-sized alternator and run a National Luna fridge, and multiple lights), look for a sealed, lead acid, deep cycle battery. For $200 I can order a sealed lead acid from Amazon and that will run everything I need for a few days, then charging off my truck for a days drive.
[Renogy 12 volt Deep cycle AGM] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075RFXHYK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_jwC3DbH19QZ6B)
Lithium batteries can’t be charged when the temp is below freezing. Besides, they cost a fortune (but last a long time tolerating heavy abuse)
Your question is very broad and there are a million varying applications.
Check out Expedition Portal. Start here if you want to read about a dual battery system .

For flats I have a set of the X-Large Bar Mitts also, and frankly I've yet to find anything that has that much room inside them. They're huge, big enough for a ski glove.
Road bars are a bit more difficult, Bar Mitts are really the only good solution I've found.
Big fan of these lights:

My self and a friend bought this below:
https://www.amazon.com/WINDJAMMER-REDUCES-Helmets-original-copied/dp/B003FHLNVK
Really helps in blocking wind noise, but keeps the main noises still there. I use the rev noises to clutch shift a lot as my bikes clutch cable isnt the best at the moment, so definitely really helps with this.
For point 7...
Try getting one of these, they are a godsend on long trips at higher RPMs
Until you tried Kroil, you haven’t tried everything. I started using this after the gunsmiths at Ruger told me it’s the secret weapon on their bench. Good luck, rider.

I recently bought these transition lens goggles on Amazon, I read good reviews on there and ePlaya.
Garbage bag could also do the job. See which ends up being lighter/as study as you need it to be. I bought a Seal Line dry bag off Amazon before a recent tour, and it ended up being this strange, quasi-conical shape (rather than a cylinder of the same radius for its entire length). Haven't used it since because of the strange shape.
Also, while I think of it, these are fantastic straps for attaching something to your rear rack:

Bought one of these that helped with my throttle hand cramping
Crampbuster CB4 Black Throttle... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001L9KI56?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I have something similar. About the only time I use it is on the interstate between cities -- which is what is was designed for, I suppose. I use this throttle assist thingie most of the time. Sits under the heel of my hand and keeps me from having to grip the throttle as tightly as I would without it.
I'm Canadian, so I bought from Amazon.ca but the Amazon.com one is the same. You want motion pro 01-0094.
Edit: fitment checkers may say it won't fit. It's not a part for the mt/fz-07, and it has a different throw than stock (which is the point) but it will indeed fit.

Twelve bucks. Pick up a switch and fuseholder for another ~5 each. Just wire it in where the battery meets your controller. The voltage stepdown is built in so you don't have to think about it, and it's... really goddamned bright. I fashioned a different mount for mine because the included one is flimsy. There are two threaded holes in the body so you can get creative.
I was actually thinking about buying one like rIGHT now. Is it the same as this product?
I love in Minnesota too, in Savage. You should check this out though: https://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/statutes/?id=169.471

The Sena SMH 10 is what I got for that purpose, along with some reusable earplugs from Harbor Freight. It is waterproof at least on the outside part, so you can leave it on the helmet. The call quality was surprisingly good because it has a noise cancelling mic, and the sound quality of the music was really good when you use earplugs (it sounded okay without it because the bass was missing). I used it for a year and a half with no issues.

Jokes aside, buy some snowmobile gloves and heated grips. The gloves should have thinner palms and heavy outer layers.
For the heated grips I have been very impressed with the tusk lock on one's. Their about 50usd. Got mine from Rocky mountain atv Mc but you can probably get em anywhere.
These Cortech bags. They were good, did their job. The waterproof covers are a bit of a joke, but hey, what do you expect at 70 mph in the rain.
My riding boots have a plastic pad sewn on the left boot right where the shifter hits so the surface is a little more scratch-resistant.
Otherwise, maybe something like https://www.amazon.com/Shifter-Skinz-Motorcycle-Protectors-Accessories/dp/B001036KGO ?
Also, do you think you could estimate how long this might last for me?
edit: whoops, assuming a 38wH battery like this one

although that one is quite large size-wise, perhaps a more reasonable 10 wH
I would recommend the Sena SMH10. I have one and would buy it again in a heartbeat. Three others that I ride with now own it and all would say the same thing, plus we can all chat while we ride. It syncs up through Bluetooth with my phone and has chat between headsets.

Im a huge fan of this: Dowco Guardian Weatherall Plus
It's weatherproof, has a vent, pockets under the cover for alarms, and a heat shield so you can put it on immediately after riding.
Don't mess with your hearing. With your current setup, it will go fast. You may also end up with Tinnitus. In the least it can be annoying, at its worst, unbearable. Always wear earplugs. Don't fall for the gimmicky re-usable earplugs that can be extremely expensive. Just buy a jug of the squishy foam earplugs that are pennies each. This video has a good breakdown. If you want to listen to music, get a helmet speaker system. This one is plenty cheap, and works well. Phone calling also works great, both ways.
I just cut, soldered, and used good glue filled shrink wraps. Im sure if you are not comfortable with that type of installation you could find connectors to plug it right in.

I'm going to buck the trend and mention that I bought a $20 heated vest on Wish, and that thing is the tits. Sizing runs extremely small, because... China.
It runs for a bitchin' long time off of any USB power bank (the knockoff vests are cheap because no battery is included). You provide your own, but the upside is you can go as big or little as you want in that department. The vest just has a USB plug that you can bung into anything. You could plug it into your bike, too, but a small battery bank is way less of a hassle. It lacks sleeves, but I have not found this to be an issue at all.
Under my normal riding gear it is more than warm enough if I have it on just over my undershirt. Having an insulating shell over it is critical when you are moving, otherwise the heat it generates just blows away. I have never felt the need for heated pants. My ADV pants are plenty warm with the removable liners installed and all the vents closed. If you keep your core warm, your arms/legs should remain warm as well. Fingers and toes are a different story.
I have heated grips, and use a set of cheap GI poly glove liners inside my "winter" motorcycle gloves (which are not actually very warm by themselves). This combo plus the heated grips is adequate for around 30-40 minutes of riding around freezing before I start getting pissed off. I do have handguards with wind deflectors on my KLR, which probably helps -- albeit very slightly.
For extended riding in cold weather, or if you have shit gloves, check out snowmobile hand warmers:
https://www.amazon.com/Kolpin-Geartector-Mitts-Black-92185/dp/B001Q4YMXA/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=snowmobile+hand+warmers&qid=1573939191&sr=8-1
They offer pretty much complete wind protection plus if you have heated grips they will turn into little hot boxes. The trick is to get snowmobile or ATV variants (make sure they'll clear your mirrors, though). You can get "motorcycle" ones which are the same damn thing, but cost 4x more because they say "motorcycle" on them.
Keeping your toes from freezing is more of a challenge. Heated socks exist as do heated insoles. Avoid heated socks. They get stinky fast and they're a major pain in the ass to wash. At the moment I use thick wool winter hiking socks and a pair of Thinsulate full height hunting boots -- possibly throwing crash safety to the wind. They're stiff as fuck, just as much so as some of my dedicated "motorcycle" boots, authoritatively waterproof, and cheap. And warm, most importantly.
I didn't have a tutorial, but here's what I did.
Here's the end result with some input and output connectors on the outside of the can, as well as a volt meter, USB charge ports and a switch so that the parasitic load from the Astron box doesn't kill it while not in use.
The hookup inside the box is relatively simple:
It's really that simple. This box kicked ass on Field Day, ran my Kenwood TS-50 and AT-50 all day with the solar panel keeping the battery topped off. Ran the system long after dark until I was too tired to work any more.
If you have more questions, look me up.
Right on. These are the ones I bought: Kolpin Geartector Mitts - Black - 92185 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001Q4YMXA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_l9LJDbD9NT6Z1
I haven't tried them yet, but they seem like they'll work well. Their main purpose is to block wind - you'll still need to wear decent gloves.
Hey all! I have a few questions about helmet speakers for music. I have horrible tinnitus and bought that huge bulk thing of foam earpro to wear which helps immensely. But at the same time, I can't wear ear buds. I've tried some of those earpro ear buds but they neither provide enough sound deadening or is loud enough. I've seen some other threads talk about how they can wear earpro and still hear music through their comm systems. I don't need anything fancy, but I need something loud enough to hear through the foam. I don't mind plugging my phone into it, or if it has any sort of comm function. Ive looked at a couple, but I'm just trying to find some other peoples experiences.
Some that I am looking at:
Sena SMH-10

No, just tapped into the DRL and Blinker wiring (theirs YT videos) The lights are Sunpie 7"Round Halo for Jeep JK (H3 connector). You will need to find a way to mount them. https://www.amazon.com/Mounting-Wrangler-2007-2017-Unlimited-Headlights/dp/B07GNZ7XBL
The opening around your neck is usually the most significant source of wind noise in a helmet. If your helmet has a removable chin curtain and you remove it, put it back in. If you don't have a neck curtain, before getting a new helmet you can try a Windjammer.
Modular helmets are often quieter specifically because the neck curtain on most of them can come in closer than helmets you have to pull over your head.
I also might try different ear plugs. The simple foam ones actually have the highest level of projection of anything out there when properly inserted. Custom molded ones aren't necessarily superior.
I have this cover. It has vents and heat shields on it so I cover the bike as soon as I park it. Currently living in the Baltimore/DC area so humidity is pretty outrageous but I have yet to have any issues with condensation.

Bike cover and cheap saddlebag recommendations? Hoping to spend under $200 total. Currently looking at the Cortech Super 2.0 but have no idea what to look for in terms of covers. About to go back to school and will be losing my garage, thus the cover need. The saddlebags would be used for holding my gear while I'm not riding, as well as a small gym bag or other miscellaneous items. I'm not particularly worried about locking the bags as motorcycle parking at school is all in high traffic areas and well covered by cameras.
These Headlights are surprisingly good for the price I Also Wired the Halo LED to a fuse that turned on when the Key is On/Running the Jeep. You'll have to adjust your headlights after but there a little t15 screw that allows you to do that (Left for lower, right for Higher, on my 2015 Sahara I can access this screw without taking the Grille off)

Gloves are always a good idea, because in a lot of situations your hands are the first thing that hits the ground. However, if you have problems with getting numb hands one of these might help.
I modified a set of kolpin ATV mitts to use for the winters in NYC. I cut two holes in the top and screw the rearview mirrors through the mitts. This way they can't get stolen (lost a different pair less than 1 week after buying).
Before these I wore two sets of gloves and would still end up with numb hands by the end of my 30 minute commute home in the winter. Last winter with the mitts I rode throughout with just a single set of riding gloves.
Fuck yeah it is! Here you go mang!
From my Google doc:
the latter yea, I bought this one
Easy to install, have a minor issue with mine where a cable is ometimes resting on my neck, since I didn't take the time to put the wiring in carefully, headphones are of decent quality, and can go too loud (because you still wanna hear traffic!)
I also didn't use the microphone slot, that cable is kind of a pain, it's maybe.. 6" at the isde of my head and just sort of flops about, sometimes I hear like "tick tick tick" from it hitting my helmet at speed
Lots of helmets have headphone places in them now
What a fucking SCAM. A FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR battery every five years? It's a stinking medium sized sealed lead acid (gel cell) battery. At most it costs $70 retail.
Philly did a test run on these, and they're an over priced hot mess. The city shouldn't spend a dime on this junk.
