Media Browser Community

As you all know from our previous announcement, we have some great things coming on Android:

http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/blog/1/entry-154-coming-soon-to-your-android-living-room/

Before the new version is rolled out, we thought about doing a sale, and then we thought why not go free for short while to help create excitement and bring more new people to Media Browser. It is free in both the Play Store and Amazon App Store:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mb.android

Please take a moment to rate and review your apps, it is one of the best ways you can contribute.

Thank you for your support.

That's awesome. Great work on everything guys!
Just a quick question though, Free as in Trial or Free as in Beer?

Completely free.

CBS News has an app (free) on most streaming boxes (Apple TV, Roku, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV) that carries most of the CBS News content you are looking for (plus stuff like 60 Minutes Overtime, but not the full 60 Minutes itself), including to Canadians:

https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/cbs-news-live-breaking-news/id334256223#?platform=appleTV

https://channelstore.roku.com/en-ca/details/27536/cbs-news

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.treemolabs.apps.cbsnews&hl=en_CA

https://www.amazon.ca/CBS-Interactive-News-Fire-TV/dp/B01MDKA8EH

Most of the major American networks news departments (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS) plus US news channels like Fox News, MSNBC and CNN put most of their clips up on YouTube in an extremely timely fashion. NBC and PBS put their nightly news brodcasts online, as does the CBC with The National. Live events like rallies, speeches and other incidents often get covered live by many outlets, including Reuters, Global News, the New York Times and the Associated Press. You also get live feeds of channels like Bloomberg, Al Jazeera English and Sky News.

The CBC Gem App and website (https://gem.cbc.ca), after supplying an email address, gives you access to 14 CBC stations across Canada for local news and CBC content for free, and offers CBC News Network for $4.99 monthly:

https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/cbc-gem/id422191503#?platform=appleTV

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.cbc.android.cbctv&hl=en_CA

https://www.amazon.ca/CBC-Gem/dp/B07P9VDPCC

You should also look into getting an over-the-air TV antenna, for local news. A lot of American TV network programming ends up on Canadian OTA networks anyway, primarily CTV/CTV2, City TV and Global... You don't necessarily have to reach the US networks (or pay for tricks like VPN or DNS services) to get the US shows you are looking for.

60 Minutes (and 48 Hours, Dateline NBC, ABC Nightline and 20/20) is carried over-the-air across most of southern and eastern Ontario on CHCH TV, a local Hamilton/Niagara station whose signal is repeated across the province:

https://www.chch.com/schedule/

If you live in the same Ontario region, the otherwise-religious over-the-air TV channel YES TV carries Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune:

https://www.yestv.com/tune-in

You may also live close enough to the Canada-US border across the country that you can receive US TV channels over-the-air to get Jeopardy!

(Jeopardy! also recently put their Tournament of Champions Finals on YouTube)

Use a site like rabbitears.info to help you detemine how well you might be able to get stations over-the-air:

https://www.rabbitears.info/searchmap.php

These are largely free services and one-time purchases and outlays (particularly if you supplement the OTA antenna with a device like TabloTV), to the point where a separate $200 yearly ($16.66 monthly, same as Netflix Premium, and cheaper than $19.99 monthly Crave TV + HBO) TSN Direct subscription doesn't look so expensive. Adding a Sportsnet NOW+ subscription adds a TON of NHL content, and between Sportsnet NOW+ and TSN Direct you get every NBA marquee game (including pretty much all the games on TNT and ESPN) and more (particularly games involving Canadian players), all Toronto Raptors games, multiple NHL games every night, the NBA and NHL All-Star Games, NHL Outdoor Classic games and NBA Christmas Day, both entire NBA and NHL Playoffs, and NBA Finals (the Stanley Cup Finals is available on CBC and Sportsnet). This is before even considering packages like NHL Live, NBA League Pass and hacking stuff like paid DNS and VPN services. Many Americans would KILL to be able to subscribe to just the major sports networks in their country standalone, and you can do that in Canada.

I use both Firetv box and Roku Premiere streaming devices. I think we use our FireTV boxes the most. The FireTV boxes are around $90.

I have an HDHomerun Extend connected to my antenna. I have viewed it through Plex, Kodi, and straight through an app (HDHomerun) on my FireTV box. By far, the most user friendly and best picture for me has been viewing it directly through the HDHomerun app (free to download). I don't DVR anything, so I can't comment about DVR functions. As far as I know, this app is not available on Roku. I could not get this app to work on the FireTV stick, only the box.

https://www.amazon.com/SiliconDust-USA-Inc-HDHomeRun/dp/B01MSBCRDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1504089747&sr=8-1&keywords=hdhomerun+app

One cool feature of the HDHomerun app is there is an available "what's on" on each channel that is available to see by just pushing the selector circle to the right while you are watching TV. It will tell you the station and the programing, and you can select the channel you want to view from there.

I use an Amazon FireTV stick and an old monitor with a pair of cheap PC speakers from Amazon. I have made a dumsterdivers Smart TV!

For like TV I use an app called TV Player https://www.amazon.com/TV-Player-TVPlayer/dp/B00G6H6BTA

If it's live on Freeview it will be live on the app.

The FireTV stick works well for Amazon, Netflix, iPlayer and other stuff I like to watch in my office while I'm at my PC.

Regardless, I've already paid for the app on Google Play and I absolutely love Plex.

I don't use Sky Go myself, but as far as I can see, it's available in the Amazon App Store, so should be fairly easy to get it installed on your Fire Stick

Sky Go on the Amazon App Store

From that page, I think you can have it install on your Fire Stick, and I would guess that you then have to sign-in to your Sky account within the Sky Go app.

Good luck!

Get the WWE Network App on the Amazon App Store

Sign up for a WWE Network account. It's $10 per month and can be purchased using pre-paid cards (sold at Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Walgreens, etc).

Get 2 pre-paid cards, activate one on January 24th (day of Royal Rumble), the 30 days will expire on February 24th (which will allow you to watch Fastlane on 2/21).

Activate the other March 12th (day of Roadblock), the 30 days will expire on April 12th (which will allow you to watch NXT Takeover: Dallas and Wrestlemania).

  1. Install Amazon App Store

  2. Uninstall the old Amazon App from Google Play

  3. Install the updated Amazon App and the Instant Video App from the Amazon App Store

  4. Done :)

This is the one I use

I think it does video, but I haven't tried it. I bought this one because it had a good trial and was a $1 in app purchase. There's a few other alternatives but this one worked ok. I did have to fiddle with the bitrate to get it working with music.

u/Switchkill · 1 pointr/PleX

Just glancing, but it looks like there's some integration of it and that the app is free (maybe just for me since I own it already). I guess it works like Roku and you set it up then download the plex app onto the device? Then you could access the remote PC from there.

u/wor2k · 3 pointsr/PleX

I could be very wrong but I don't think there is a difference between the two stores....?

Under amazon link: "What's new in version 3.6.3.269" Link

Under google play link: "Fixes (v3.6.2)" Link

From their notes it looks like amazon has the newer version but I would assume you can update either of them once in the downloaded app? Now I'm confused.

u/dennisdubay · 2 pointsr/SquaredCircle

If you have a Smart tv and an Iphone/Ipad, download IwebTV from the APP Store. From there, Open IwebTV go to NJW's site, click on video you want to watch, and it'll ask you what TV you want to connect to ... as easy as that. EDIT: works with Android too.

I assume you're not trying to sideload or anything? There are two Netflix apps in the Amazon app store. This one is for the FireTV: https://www.amazon.com/Netflix-Inc/dp/B00OGRMULA. This one is for Kindle tablets: https://www.amazon.com/Netflix-Inc/dp/B005ZXWMUS. If you're using the right app and not trying to sideload, I'm not sure what to tell you. Have you tried contacting customer support? Are you sure you have enough storage available to install the app?

The deal is mentioned in the product description of the Plex app on the Amazon app store.

> ... (annual Plex Pass on sale in-app TODAY ONLY through the Amazon app store for 50% off: $19.99 USD, normally $39.99! - tablets only) ...

>
After the first year, the price of an annual Plex Pass will revert to the regular annual price, currently $39.99. Prices may vary in other currencies.

Note: You must install the Plex app from the Amazon app store to get this deal. You cannot install the app from the Google Play store. The deal is for the annual Plex Pass subscription only, and not available for the monthly or lifetime subscription.

I'm not sure about the tablets only. Someone please confirm. Thanks. Edit: Confirmed working with phones and Fire TV.

How exactly did you accomplish this? Exactly where?

  1. Go here on your computer. https://www.amazon.com/Sling-TV-LLC-Television-Carte/dp/B00ODC5N80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497474163&sr=8-1&keywords=sling+tv

  3. Add to cart.
  4. Send to device. (Assuming you are signed into your Amazon account on your device) you should be able to pick which device you want it sent to.
  5. Settings on Amazon fire -> account-> sync Amazon content.
  6. Wait a minute. Sling will disappear from managed applications. Launch sling from main menu.

Do you have the FireTV stick or 'box'? Looking at the app on the amazon app store it states:Write to external storage I was hoping that meant I could record/save to it.

u/Fizzol · 1 pointr/kindlefire

Just to make sure we're talking about the same app, it's this vTube?

I can click on "All channels", pick a channel I'm interested in, and get a list of videos sorted by upload date, I believe. I don't see anything for playlists, unless I missed it.

Edit: And aTube looks like the exact same app as vTube with a different name, confusing.

Download MX Player or VLC. Once you have one of them on the device, grant your kid access to it. The thing that's a pain is that you have to do the transfer of the movies while logged into the child account over USB.

The other option is to download GoToApp and then grant your child access to that. It's less secure because it basically breaks the Freetime restriction. The child can access anything on the device using it. GL - This is my biggest complaint with the Freetime setup.

u/RDGnome · 5 pointsr/Chromecast

Here it is.

I notice it's quite buried when searching for some reason. Make sure you have updated your Amazon app too

u/cache_ · 1 pointr/cordcutters

I use custom software I wrote but HDHomeRun works with HDHomeRun DVR (from Silicondust), Channels DVR (only on Apple TV 4), Plex DVR, and I believe Emby.

I haven't used it with a Fire TV but others on here have. There is an official HDHomeRun app available for it.

You could stream from them on anything that will play MPEG-2 including VLC on your computer, Android phone, iOS phone, all streaming boxes except Roku and Chromecast, your network-connected TV over DLNA, Kodi, a Raspberry Pi. It's a very flexible device.

u/derekvof · 1 pointr/PleX

Dude. I don't know wtf you think you're on about. Go to Amazon and download the Amazon Prime Video app.

u/Kocrachon · 1 pointr/amazon

Amazon instant video is available for android, its just not on the google play market. Might be a conflict with google or something, but if you download the amazon app store, you can download it here.

http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-com-Prime-Instant-Video/dp/B00N28818A

u/bookchaser · 1 pointr/cordcutters

The video app didn't show for me when searching for it in the Google store, neither broadly nor by its specific name. I believe this is it.

Not having that direct link, and having already installed the shopping app, I found the video app by going to a Prime video and clicking the play button. Then the app download prompt came up.

u/akatherder · 4 pointsr/cordcutters

Here's a direct link to the Prime Instant Video App:

http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-com-Prime-Instant-Video/dp/B00N28818A/ref=pd_rhf_eebr_p_img_1

I think it's saying you need the Amazon app installed to use this. You may also need the Amazon App store installed to actually install the app (but I don't think so).

u/SocksForBreakfast · 5 pointsr/cordcutters

I don't think this is the case. It redirects to:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004Y1WCDE/ref=cm_sw_su_dp

Which is not a referral link, just the product page. You can add any Amazon ASIN number to amzn.com/<ASIN> and it will redirect to:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/<ASIN>/ref=cm_sw_su_dp

Even a shortened URL would need ?tag=MY_REFERRAL_ID appended to it. Nothing fishy going on here.

u/bowenac · 1 pointr/xboxone

Plex for android is on sale for $1 on amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004Y1WCDE a must have app for Chromecast!

u/Conradical314 · 5 pointsr/PleX

It's still $0.99 on Amazon store.

It is not worth your time wondering about unofficial apps when $0.99 will get you the official app with mainstream support (new features and guaranteed updating). Normally I would want to qualify such a statement with "each to their own", but if you don't got 99 cents you're gonna wanna work on that before your media server.

u/thin_king980 · 1 pointr/slingtv

I look here https://www.amazon.com/Sling-TV-LLC-Television-Carte/dp/B00ODC5N80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497474163&sr=8-1&keywords=sling+tv

It shows it is updated a little bit down the page and I send it to my device of choice.

There are probably other ways in the AFTV like checking notifications but this is how I do it.

u/Fjordo · 1 pointr/AndroidGaming

I found that for me by going to

it showed that Amazon Prime Instant Video was not compatible with any of my devices (I have a 2.3 phone). This is probably why it wasn't enabled in the app.

u/bauerknight · 2 pointsr/PleX

Amazon is showing $2.49 for some reason. It was 1.99 an hour ago.

u/KevinWalter · 1 pointr/fireTV

Then what does the following line mean:

>LIMITATION: Playing media from your Plex Media Server on the device running this app is limited (one minute for music and video, watermark on photos) until the app is unlocked. > Waze (or Google maps in browser maybe? I really need good nav)

Google Maps in a browser intentionally doesn't provide turn-by-turn navigation to force people to use the app.

maps.me is the best option. It's not in F-Droid because they don't want other people using the server where they host the maps, but they make an apk available and offer an option to disable the analytics. OSMAnd has an awful UX but works... and is in F-Droid.

> Snapchat

It won't work on an aftermarket OS since it requires SafetyNet. Need to use alternatives unless you want to make your own OS builds with heavily integrated Play Services, likely some features disabled and fight the endless battle of trying to bypass SafetyNet. Bypassing SafetyNet is isn't going to work for a long time before they break the bypass. Not something you can rely on.

Netflix (with casting)

Netflix started requiring SafetyNet to install it from the Play Store so real SafetyNet integration on their streaming servers is likely coming. No point in working around the initial SafetyNet block by downloading the apk elsewhere when integration within the app / servers is likely coming.

Chromecast is part of Play Services so that isn't available. There are likely alternatives but nothing is integrated / enabled. There was no interest from the community in taking over real maintenance of WiFi display, and no one has put together the hacks required to simply get it working without maintenance for CopperheadOS.

The Plex app likely works without Play and is on the Amazon App Store.

> Hangouts (this is a big one)

That's very unlikely to work without Play Services. You would need to use Wire, Signal, WhatsApp or other alternatives that aren't strongly tied to the Google ecosystem since they tie everything to Play Services.

It's on the Samsung app store. They must have cut a deal. Typical scumbag Amazon.

Edit: also available if you can stomach downloading the Amazon app store
