Reddit did not like my text. here it is. I wanted to replace my glass L-shaped computer desk as I had it for 10 years and wanted to fix issues I had with it. So I laid out my requirements:

  1. I wanted a wood top, as glass, while easy to clean and maintain, is colder than wood.
  2. Improve cable management to hide as many cables as possible. Glass/metal table not effective here
  3. Hidden power strip
  4. No table legs blocking me from moving back and forth between home and work computer.
  5. Current glass desk is 30 inches deep, I like that depth.
  6. I wanted the table height to be able to fit my file cabinet underneath to clean up the space

I looked at roomandboard.com, and found a table I liked, but not cheap, with shipping, around $1700.

    http://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/office/desks/parsons-leg-l-shaped-desks

So can i do it myself for less?

I started by looking on r/DIY and came across pipe desks. Great idea, industrial look, and would fit in with my building as i live in a gentrified industrial neighborhood.
    Here was a great example:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/2w3phn/pipe_and_butcher_block_ldesk/
Shoutout to u/tylergarner as I stole some of his ideas, such as the powerstrip he used and the metal mending strips. Thanks!

My issues with this DIY (not everyone has these constraints)
  7. Having to strip/paint pipe - i live in a loft and have limited space, fumes/vapors will kill brain cells.
  8. Loved the wood, but would have to sand, stain and poly it. Sand would get all over the loft and again, fumes/vapors.
  9. I am not experienced with staining, so may screw it up.

So i needed to solve the wood top issues and the legs problem.

    Solving the Table top issue.

I looked online for options for wood, and found options besides Lumber Liquidators that have finished wood tops
www.crosscuthardwoods.com (local portland, oregon store 2 miles from my loft) - they carried two brands
  10. Michigan Maple Butcher Block http://www.butcherblock.com/products/residential-products/residential-counter-tops/
  11. John Boos - here is an example on amazon
    http://www.amazon.com/John-Boos-Thick-Commercial-Butcher/dp/B005IZ2EZQ/ref=sr_1_19?srs=2594426011&ie=UTF8&qid=1450283655&sr=8-19&keywords=john+boos+maple

Local companies in your city may be able to order these or maybe a different brand

    Benefits of buying finished
    1. looks great
    2. Quicker/less work
    3. can be ordered with poly finish (no chemicals)
    4. can be custom ordered with edge (e.g., bullnose, square edge) and size

Issues - costs can be higher and staining is not possible

Things to consider if you choose this approach - Ensure you know if you wanted finished (Poly) or unfinished. You can get it either way. John Boos will burn their logo into the wood unless requested not to have name.

I decided on 60 by 30 by 1.5 inches thick Maple, square edge, poly and no logo. Good news is that crosscut had it in stock by both vendors.
John Boos $328 and Michigan Maple ($298). I went with John Boos as the finish was smoother and the wood pieces were the length of the table, not the traditional butcher block style.
      I bought two.

      Solving the Leg issue

I searched on line for "metal table legs" and found several vendors.
      http://www.tablelegsonline.com/table-legs.html
      http://www.tablelegworld.com/Table-Height-Table-Legs
      Ikea sells them as well

I was unsure the height so i went with cheap and fast, adjustable black legs from Ikea. $15/each needed 7 ($105 total)
One of the two tables is short a leg, below I talk about how i support the missing leg.
      https://us-mg5.mail.yahoo.com/neo/launch?action=showLetter&umid=2_0_0_1_344973_AIt2imIAABORVnERMgfrWKGy%2F3A&box=Inbox&src=td&.rand=1808515774

The legs are ok, adjustable, and low shine black, but not as rigid as I wanted. Not an issue when assembled, but more just me knowing it could be better. I later found out that i could buy the cool square legs from Room and Board for $40 a piece.

      Connecting the two tables together

I saw that u/tylergarner used a window sash to connect the two tables together and I was going to run with that, but I then saw this idea on the crosscut site.
      http://www.crosscuthardwoods.com/tite-joint.html

I loved the idea of tite joint, but as I did not want to burrow into the table so i looked around and found this, which I installed.

      http://www.wwhardware.com/epco-joint-fasteners-e0026e $15 shipped.

I bought a much longer screw from Ace HW to enable more space between the brackets so I am not screwing too close to the edge.
You may be able to go to a countertop store and buy one from them as they use them to connect countertops together.

      Supporting the missing leg

I installed two of the following
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-10-in-Zinc-Plated-Mending-Plate-15390/202034036 ($3 each) I used #12 screws to mount these.
These work very well, zero sag, even after sitting on it for a few mins (155lbs).

Costs before my options (Around $800). So I saved $900 over the room and board solution. I am happy.

      Options I chose to install.

      Wire management - Ikea
Cheap and highly effective. $10 each, bought three.
      http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30200253/

Drawer to hold pens, paper and the like
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KWM8EEK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
Love it, $35 from amazon - did not find many options here. Maybe searched on the wrong terms

      Power Strip
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027D3LNG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01

Lots of plugs and spaced out so no conflicts accessing them, $28 amazon

      Adjustable Keyboard Tray
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B0DCOO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00
$95 and a crappy 3M design, sticks about 1 inch out from the edge of the table when installed as designed. would not buy again.

How did i mount my PC underneath my desk?

I had a smaller version of the following.
      http://www.storables.com/10-x-24-shelf.html
I used 1.5 inch fender washers and screws where the legs go to mount to the table, then I used cable ties to hold of the PC (intel NUC) and USB drives.

      Note:
I did not use any of the screws provided in the legs, or options i selected. Maple is very hard and the philip screws they provided strip very, very, very easy. I went to my local Ace Hardware store and bought my screws. 5 min walk and could by individually versus a whole box from HD/Lowes. Saved money and frustration.
I generally got the biggest diameter screws I could get the fit the hole for the legs, and they are in there, zero issues. Ensure you drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood, I followed this guide for hardwood and was mostly successful http://engineershandbook.com/Tables/woodscrewpilotholes.htm

      Options to lower costs

  12. Buy a solid wood door and rip to size. Lowes and HD sell them.
    http://www.homedepot.com/p/JELD-WEN-30-in-x-80-in-Woodgrain-Flush-Solid-Core-Unfinished-Hardwood-Interior-Door-Slab-THDJW160700464/202036255
  13. Buy a cheaper type of prefinished wood than maple.
  14. Ikea apparently sells some countertops that can/maybe able to be used, but I did not look into it.

This is definitely a project with a lot of potential. The ErgoDox is pretty popular. I have thought about how to solve this problem before. There are many different ways to approach this.

You can design a whole case with tilting and tenting built in, like the ErgoDox EZ. Alternatively build a lift kit, that will work with most of the popular cases with and without included wrist rest.

There are also lots of possible ways engineer a solution. Just having adjustable screws like on the linked example and the EZ is the laziest way to do it. Folding feet would be a different approach.

Defining the goals properly for a project like this is usually very helpful. Building any lift solution isn't difficult, building a great one is. That means making the right tradeoffs between price, ease of use, adjustability, reliability, comfort, elegance. I also think a way to attach both halves into one piece might be an interesting idea. Then it's easier to move around without losing your positioning, basically turning an ErgoDox more into a Kinesis Advantage. It also doesn't have to be the ideal solution for everybody. Just something that many users will like.

  1. The best time I ever had in school was when I was in microbiology (I was a psych major). My professor was amazing. She challeged us and let us do mini experiments in lab. I love science and this class let me be free to investigate areas I was interested in. We learned a lot through this method and I thank her for teaching me about our microfloura friends all the time.

  2. Most wonderful time

  3. I hope your school year is exciting and full of knowledge learning! It really is the most wonderful time in your life, The chance to be wrong and make mistakes with an opportunity to correct them. Wide open doors to new areas of learning and people from whick to ask questions about those areas. All the best to you!

  4. This back support is actually something i need now because of school. Poor posture during long study hours took its toll.
u/NecroJoe Ā· 2 pointsr/Workspaces

The tallest brackets I've *ever* seen, and I've worked in office/commercial furniture for nearly 8 years, in a part of the country where the vast majority of my office projects are fully sit-to-stand desk-equipped... is 4". Your requirement for being able to push in your keyboard, with the tilt you require, to pass by both the underside of the desktop and AND the under-desk cross bars AND the track of the tray itself, is quite niche. In the end, you might need to just find a keyboard tray that has the easiest tilt angle adjustment so you can easily switch back and forth so that you can more quickly switch between flat and your preferred angle. Most allow height controls on-the-fly even with one hand, but require turning a knob to set the angle, which would for sure be annoying if you had to do it every time you had to push in your keyboard. Perhaps there's something our there with an easier-to-change control.

The challenge with brackets as you've drawn them would be side-to-side wobblyness. There would have to be some significant reinforcement to prevent those from racking, even if made from fairly thick plate steel.

Even these two complex contraptions can only go 6" below the desk: 1) http://workriteergo.com/s2s-compact-system/ 2) http://workriteergo.com/leader-1/

Let's instead turn this whole thing upside-down & inside-out. If you were my client and you described your needs

Mount your monitors on a monitor arm (or two). Then you can just use your desk to control the desk height, then you'd need is a platform to tilt the keyboard (a simple one like this, turned around backwards, maybe? (if your keyboard is wired, you might have to cut a notch for it), or perhaps a fully-adjustable one like this)and when everything's at the comfortable height and angle, you move the monitors on their own arm(s) to the height you need. If you have a wireless keyboard (of which there are more and more and more great options every day), you can just move it aside when you need the clear desk space.

Quite honestly, adding a keyboard tray to a sit-to-stand is usually overkill, and in an office of 1000+ people where everyone gets a sit-to-stand, there *might* be one person who insists on a keyboard tray, and they are usually considered a trouble-maker. ;)

The common things I see most people regret not bringing initially:

  • A bit of snack food to keep in your dorm. You never know when you might be hungry and the dining hall is closed.
  • A doorstop - Keep your door propped open. It's the best way to get to know everyone on your hall as they walk to/from class. My first year RA gave everyone on the hall a doorstop and it was the best thing he could have ever done. None of us ever ate at the dining halls alone. Someone would always be walking down the hall sticking their heads in everyone's rooms wanting to go to dinner.
  • It sounds silly, but school supplies and notebooks. I was dumbfounded by how many people on my hall First Year were running out to buy notebooks and pencils the day before classes.
  • A small bluetooth speaker - super versatile. Can be used anywhere from soft study music in your dorm, to hanging out outside or on The Lawn. Speakers aren't your thing? Bring a nice set of headphones to dampen out some of the noise if you're trying to study.
  • A set of utensils and 1 or 2 plates... You order some take out food? You bring some food home from O'hill? How are you going to eat it?
  • A couple recreational activities. Whatever floats your boat: Frisbee, football, XBox, boardgames, a bike, running shoes, etc. You can't do schoolwork 24/7
  • Sweatshirts and jackets - I know you probably would bring them eventually, but C'ville has crazy temperature changes within a day and it's not uncommon for September mornings to be chilly enough to require a jacket. So bring them now as opposed to after you go home for Fall break or so.
  • A daily organizer. I didn't have one for my first two months. And after I got one, it changed my life... no more forgotten assignments, no more quizzes I forgot the date for, it kept me super, super organized.
  • A positive, healthy attitude. Make the most out of your 4 years. You are going to have the time of your life. There will be hard times, but go in with a positive attitude and you'll always bounce back from anything life throws at you. You'll find a family on Grounds. Enjoy and Go Hoos!

Your'e gonna want some awesome new knives.

this to keep all your cords in place.

this so you don't have trouble plugging in all your stuff.

this can be used to keep track of all the tiny pieces (e.g. batteries, screws, etc.).

I personally use this everyday, it's the best.

these to keep you clean.

everyone needs one of these.

gotta put all the shoes somewhere.

something like this will come in handy.

It's the small details that count.

this could help when moving everything in.

And then get one of these bad boys for you!

okay I think I put enough for now, hope it helps.

u/nydjason Ā· 1 pointr/AskNYC

I had this same issue a few years ago. We figured it came from the hallway and into the bottom of the door. They offered exterminators but they only did it once.

So my solution after trying everything out was as simple as placing glue traps EVERYWHERE. Gluetraps are safe, they donā€™t harm pets, no chemical warfare into your kitchen, and easy to dispose.

What you do is place them where youā€™ve seen some of them hanging out. Put some in the cabinets too. They particularly like being in spice cabinets or where thereā€™s consistent moisture like under the sink or by the sink. I also layer them flat around the walls.

Itā€™s also worth noting that when you get a few trapped, you need to keep em there for just a short while longer because it invites the others. Once the majority of the surface has been covered then fold them (if not) and step on it to kill them and dispose it

This set from amazon is a 75 bulk set. That should be enough.

Catchmaster 75M Bulk Mouse and Insect Glue Boards, 75-Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005IMZ9TC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vZwvDbDX9AZNE

You should also consider getting a draft stopper. This stops airflow from coming through the bottom of the door but it also helps keep the bugs out. This helps tremendously especially when you have a large gap between the door and the floor.

Door Draft Stopper - High Performance Silicone Door Sweep w VHB Adhesive 3M Strip | Draft Blocker for Under Door Seal Gap Interior & Exterior Doors Weather Stripping Soundproof | Draft Guard Insulator https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DMSPWGS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_u5wvDbGFM5YG4

Once youā€™ve finally handle the situation, you should try chalking your floor. Look for colored chalk like brown or beige to match your floor. Amazon sells these cheap but you may be able to find them even cheaper at small hardware stores or even Home Depot.

I was able to get rid of every single one of the roaches in one month.

Good luck.

I'm thinking of a mix of practical and beautiful, where you can mix and match at your price points:

u/FubsyGamr Ā· 2 pointsr/sysadmin

I finally have a thread I can contribute to. I have a whole set of tools, but none of them fit in a bag:

  • Keyboard & Mouse
  • Monitor for bigger display space
  • Wireless charger for my phone
  • Favorite coffee cup
  • Headphones
  • Foot rest swivel thingie - my work hands these out, and it's actually super comfy and helps with desk posture
  • Bottle of whiskey on the desk, just in case

But seriously, how many sysadmins carry random cables and flash drives these days? Wouldn't that fall to someone like a NOC technician or something?
u/sup3rs3cr3t Ā· 2 pointsr/StandingDesk

I wanted to share a couple pictures of the desk set up and also some of the accessories I purchased. My expirience with Fully was great. I got the Jarvis3 with Walnut veneer in a72x60 size. The frame was delivered about 3 days later and the desk top about a week after purchase. The quality is everything I expected! This thing is heavy and stable at all heights. I love this desk!

> They help it roll better on shag carpet

Helps it roll better everywhere, I'll never go back to caster wheels... I actually get annoyed now when I use regular office chairs that can't glide around floors as easily. These are what I have. :)

u/troggbl Ā· 1 pointr/vive_vr

This is the chair i have that I've replaced the cushions for better support with.
I have it fairly far back compared to a "proper" typing position (far enough it would be called unprofessional in an office setting) and then my legs are pretty much at the same angel with a footstool like that.

I have the armrests at full height and pulled back and my forearms rest pretty much perfectly on them ending at my wrist.

The only time I have problems is if I drop something and the game doesnt have a jumpy pickup system. That can be pretty annoying/painful sometimes.

And not really sure what a hybrid board would be, but if I have to support my weight its pretty much a no go as I'd need my walking sticks.

u/My_Post_Is_On_Topic Ā· 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Oh dude same here, I've been using the same $50 chair for at least five years now. My best recommendation is spending $20 to get a seat cushion, this one is excellent and very comfortable.

u/toucantifa Ā· 2 pointsr/ehlersdanlos

Get yourself one of these mesh ergonomic lumbar supports intended for office chairs.

Put it on your bed and lay on it with it supporting your lower back. It'll keep your back in a more "normal" position and may stop your ribs from subluxing.

I am the queen of rib subluxations and my PT came up with this idea to try to help me be more comfortable while laying down, and it was an awesome idea and has really helped.

u/overaid Ā· 1 pointr/battlestations

It looks like a 3M adjustable keyboard tray (I might be wrong on the brand though) they are pretty expensive, I have one similar at my workplace and they are really nice to use, it's worth the investment if you are looking for better ergonomics, I'm starting the build of my next desk soon and it will include an adjustable keyboard tray like this one.

u/LovableContrarian Ā· 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

That's a really interesting way of thinking about it. Thanks for the insight!

Do you think something like this would make much of a difference?

https://www.amazon.com/Door-Draft-Stopper-Performance-Soundproof/dp/B07DMSPWGS

The room is a bit drafty too, so 2 birds with one stone.

I'm sure a solid door would make a huge difference, but would prefer to try some cheaper options first.

Edit: maybe a foam one would work better?

u/AnotherGraham Ā· 13 pointsr/battlestations

I think it's a pretty safe buy. You get a lot of features common on $1k+ herman Miller's for a fraction of the cost.

Heres the arm pads: Aloudy Ergonomic Memory Foam Office Chair Armrest Pads, Comfy Gaming Chair Arm Rest Covers for Elbows and Forearms Pressure Relief(Set of 2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M8F9IYC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_usVVDbWZSTST7

They are amazing! Definitely a must

u/bui1t Ā· 3 pointsr/battlestations

Ah still good! I highly recommend memory foam arm rests, as well as foot rest. I spend a lot of hours on the PC and these help tremendously.

u/sonsofaureus Ā· 1 pointr/Workspaces

It seems like a keyboard tray is out of favor and it's just hard to find a desk with one, meaning you might have to face trade-offs regarding other features of the desk.
Screwing in a keyboard tray is pretty easy, and you just have to make sure the screw you use is shorter than the thickness of the desktop, so it doesn't poke through.
Also, if desk height is an issue because of your height, maybe a height adjustable chair (with no arm rest) with a foot rest might be a work-around?

u/neuronalapoptosis Ā· 1 pointr/AskReddit

Oh if they refuse the lock, a door stop/door wedge would work just fine. example 1 example 2

Also this item works where when the door opens a chime is let out. the two magnets line up and as long as they are side by side nothing happens but when they are separated it makes a sound. I have free 2nd day shipping at amazon if you need any of these to feel safe and epically if your parents refuse the lock.

u/TKG3 Ā· 1 pointr/macsetups

It looks very similar to the one I have! Here's the link to mine. It works perfectly as described. Theres a compact version and a premium version (I went with the compact version since its symmetrical in design while the premium version has a dedicated mouse area on the side. It's also cheaper :P).

I have this chair with these added arm rest covers, and it's amazing. I spend A LOT of sitting these days (yay dedicated!), and it keeps me comfortable.

u/Elrox Ā· 2 pointsr/simracing

Buy a couple of these locking caster replacements. You should only have to replace 2 of the wheels to stop movement but more is usually better (its a set of 5). Much easier than messing about with cups.

u/Avridt Ā· 3 pointsr/dogs

Don't reward her for pee pad use, it will make housebreaking her harder. I would get some floor protectors to make any messes easy to clean up and protect your floors for the time being. Honestly with the risk of intestinal blockages very real I would remove the pads when she can't be watched. Then start really housebreaking her when she is fully vaccinated.

u/halsey1006 Ā· 2 pointsr/gaming

You can order locking wheels on amazon, they're like $20.

EDIT: Actually less than $20, the ones I got forever ago were only $15 and they're still working great

u/xenomachina Ā· 1 pointr/compsci

I just use one of these for each monitor. They're not quite tall enough, but I also have a keyboard tray, and an adjustable height desk. The tray lowers the keyboard by 4 inches, so I adjust the desk to be 4 inches higher, which makes it possible to place my monitors at the optimal height. Those monitor arms also save a lot of desk space (as does the keyboard tray).

u/AlbinoOrphans Ā· 2 pointsr/battlestations

A King series should fit you the most comfortably.

All of our armrests have about the same amount of cushion, but there are some third party solutions on Amazon if you require extra cushion on top of what we already offer. Be aware that memory foam covers do generate additional heat.

u/JCyber Ā· 3 pointsr/pcgaming

It's okay, I can see how it would be a sarcastic question. Can't see feeling through text so it's understandable. I found this on Amazon though, does it look like what you're looking for?

Use a lap desk or mount a board across the arms of the chair. If you are willing to buy a gaming treadmill I'm sure you could buy or mod a command chair. I know some companies sell mouse island sleeves for chair arms already.

http://www.amazon.com/Mobo-Chair-Mount-Keyboard-System/dp/B002YERS32

http://mousepaw.com/

edit: personally I would probably make something similar to the mobo thing out of wood myself or mod a nice keyboard tray to fit to chair rather than deal with flimsy plastic and small islands.
Beanbag bottom lap desks would be great but aren't wide enough for my g13 +keyboard+mousepad/mouse which is about 2'10" across all three if I am using a G19 keyboard. There are smaller keyboards out there though. If I didn't have to type messages in a game I could skip the keyboard altogether and just use G13 + mouse on an island at the end of each arm of my chair but that's not realistic for overall use dropping out of games.

I think the amazon basics one https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01DN8TG46/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qHFLDbTR4EHFY
Is good, if you don't mind that it can tilt back/front.

u/ooLunch Ā· 3 pointsr/HomeDecorating

You could get a chair mat like this and cut it down to size. One chair mat 30x48" would yield a couple of bin mats, so you have extra (if one gets discolored or whatever). Easy to rinse and has nubs on the bottom to keep it in place on carpet.

u/Dark_Prism Ā· 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I actually like mine. It's a "Killabee". It wasn't terribly expensive. Though I also bought arm rest cushions.

u/biffnix Ā· 2 pointsr/workstations

Man, I can see your poor floorboards getting really scratched up over time, if you don't use a chair mat (something like this). That Ikea desk chair's wheels aren't very forgiving on wood floors...

Very clean workspace, though!

u/chipperclocker Ā· 2 pointsr/MusicBattlestations

I wouldn't trust those flimsy trays on side rails. 3M makes some very sturdy adjustable key board trays which come in various sizes and have adjustable height / tilt, too. These are designed for commercial use and are much stronger.

Fits most chairs with arms, even ones with big curves (there's a curve adapter included for each arm). For this setup you just need the arms and foldout pads, the keyboard tray stayed in the box.

Here is what has worked for me for years:

  • Microsoft Natural ergonomic keyboard
  • Logitech Trackman for general mousing. I switch to a G5 for pixel work and gaming. Keep both plugged in
  • breaks every hour for the back
  • The big one: A Mobo chair mount. I can't recommend this one enough. I was having major pain in my right shoulder from mousing. Got one of these and the trackball and the pain was gone in two weeks. Simply put, it keeps you from leaning over your desk and extending your shoulders. Not cheap but worth every single penny.

I bought these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M8F9IYC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for my arm rests. Beats the hell out of office chairs arm rest padding and the hard plastic the gaming chairs come with. My only complaint is they were a little difficult to put on.
