I've lost 140lbs This year, about 1/3 of my body weight, and there's no secret. Just hard work and discipline. But there are a few things that I personally could not have done without.

Calories in/calories out is KEY. Be vigilant and over estimate when you can't weigh or have to guess on a food input. I use MyFitnessPal to track calories in and a Fitbit to track calories out.

I started just walking my dog for about 30 minutes. I found as it got easier and enjoyable I worked my way up to running. I found that using my Fitbit to measure I would burn almost the same calories (under 200 calories difference) walking or running the same distance walking just takes longer. I went from barely being able to walk a quarter mile without my back hurting or having to rest to running a 5k every day.

My fitbit: https://www.fitbit.com/shop/blaze I love gadgets so of course it was a new toy for me but getting a more accurate count of the calories burned throughout the day is key. Plus, it's very motivational when i'm close to my goal for the day or a new record of steps or calories burned for the day.

Shoes: http://www.dsw.com/shoe/new+balance+410+v4+trail+running+shoe+-+mens?prodId=324685 super comfortable lets me run as long as my body will allow

headphones: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0132YHU0I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Cheap, but they work AMAZING. I specifically chose this model so that they could not fall out while running.

phone case(?) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JF9DU4U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I dont like the idea of an arm band. having something clunky on my arm would be distracting. This thing keeps my keys and phone snug to my body so nothing is shaking around. Again it's about minimizing distractions while running.

Food Scale: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004164SRA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Keeping an accurate calorie count is key and this battery operated scale is perfect. I like that it can handle up to 10lbs and is pretty accurate with smaller increments as well.

Meal prep: https://www.amazon.com/Glad-Food-Storage-Containers-Entree/dp/B0014D0SWW/ref=sr_1_cc_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1468187303&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=glad+containers These guys keep me on my diet. one day a week i make a ton of meals and these are the perfect size that they let me fill them and when im done eating I feel full. I eat all my meals at home and work, out of these to prevent me from over eating.

I use my slow cooker to cook my meat (usually chicken) and a rice cooker to cook a bunch of brown rice. My meals are usually 1 cup rice, 4oz chicken, an apple, and 3 oz carrots for lunch and dinner and a half cup of fiber one and 1 cup almond milk for breakfast. From there I just change the type of meat and fruits and veggies from week to week to keep from getting bored.

This sub also keeps me motivated!

Hope this helps! Good luck.

I asked this question after my first GoRuck event and got multiple answers, I did some searching of my own after looking at sealgrinderpt.com they list the Top 10 boots for GoRuck events.

Well I went above and beyond. In a 2 week period I ordered 19 pairs of boots/trail shoes/hiking shoes which was about $2700 worth (it wasn't all at once) All of which got returned.

What I wanted was comfortable, light weight, and good drainage.

If you want a boot, I would go with the Oakley LSA or LSA Water. Both are super light weight good ankle support, both drain water well and the LSA water drain very well (the have holes in the bottom with screens to drain the water. A buddy of mine did a Tough/Light back to back without changing socks and had no issues. Also try the Nike SFB 6 or 8 inch very light, drain well.

If you want more of a hiking boot, I would go with the Columbia vent freak, they are light weight and drain reasonably well. You can also go with the Merrill Ventilators they are a bit on the heavy side but drain well and are comfortable but do take about 20 miles to break so get some training rucks in.

If you want a shoe, Columbia Drain Makers are awesome, light weight, drain very well, no break in needed. Also try any non gortex salomon they were once sold on the GoRuck website and it the show that most Cadre wear.

Last but not least my newest discovery .... Nike Chukka SFB flyknit. They are by far the most comfortable "boot" shoe I found ankle support isn't great but it's more than a low cut shoe. So far I've done 2 training rucks and numerous "boot camp" and gym sessions with them and they feel great! Only downside ... They are pricey!

One last tip, make sure you double sock .. I HATE double socking but I found that injinji "liner" toe socks with thin smart wool over helped my feet more than ever. Let me be clear I hated toe socks and double socking until I found each of those.

Yes basically that's what I had: a patella tracking issue that caused kneecap to rub in the wrong places. It was caused by dominant quads and totally non-existent glute/hip muscles. Once these were activated and strengthened it essentially pulled the patella to the outside part of my leg more, so it wasn't rubbing on the inside and ran central.

The non-weighted exercises were (3 sets of 15).

Monster walks

Clam shells

Side Leg Raise (w band)

Glute bridges (Frog bridge is personal fave)

Bird dogs

These were good because you could do them with the injury. They are all hip/glute activation exercises. Then once the injury settled down, I moved on to a combo of the above and weighted exercises, mainly (3 sets of 12-15):

Goblet squats

Step-ups

Lunges

Hip flexions

Sit backs (basically a pistol squat but you sit back on to a chair). A physio told me these were the best

Single-leg deadlifts

Inner-thigh ball squeezes/pulses

These seem to work glutes, as well as incorporating vastus medialis (the teardrop muscle just above the kneecap that is often the culprit for patella tracking issues apparently), abductors and hamstrings to some degree.

I do these regularly and run way faster and don't really ever feel tired the next day anymore. Also I've stayed pretty much injury free in these areas. I don't ever squat or deadlift anymore and am much stronger than I was when I used to do all that. Its great - even if you look like Jane Fonda in the gym.

------

Hope this helps. It is such a frustrating injury and it feels like you're never going to get rid of it. But you will.

One key thing that sorted me out was improving my running form. There are tons of videos on this but basically. 1) Don't heel strike too much. 2) increase your cadence. 3) shorten your stride. Your head shouldnt be bobbing when youre running.

Final thing: A knee strap worn around the patella has worked wonders for me. Doesn't work for everyone but give it a try my man!

Hey guys, I own a couple of Champion reverse weave hoodies and I've been itching to buy more hoodies. However, the reverse weave hoodies aren't on sale right now (at least I think), and I really can't justify buying them full price.

I recently came upon this, and it seems to be a pretty good deal - $15 a piece for a Champion powerblend hoodie. I was just wondering how these compare quality-wise/fit-wise to the reverse weave hoodies. Are these okay hoodies?

Thanks!

u/joey_miglio · 4 pointsr/streetwear

How I would do the Pyrex Aesthetic On a Budget

  1. Leggings. You already have the leggings to that's a plus we can cross that off!

  2. Shorts. Pyrex prints their clothes on Champion so a pair of cheap champion shorts could work in place of pyrex ones. But if you wanted to go above and beyond and save up you can get the ones made by Off-White which is deigned by the same guy as Pyrex and shares very similar designs.

  3. Shirt. Pyrex Shirts don't go for too much, but a good alternative could be a plain black or white Gildan hoodie or shirt or the Stussy x Pyrex Vision Shirt.

  4. Shoes. Can't go wrong with some Mid Top Air Force One's!

  5. Bomber Jacket (Maybe). I feel that a good way to elevate this fit to over 9000 would be a black plain bomber jacket!
u/cheeseburger_humper · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I want Jessica to make me a hat!

If you're getting into running, I highly recommend some good socks. You wouldn't believe how much wear and tear on the feet is prevented by proper socks and good shoes.

Or maybe you should get Chewie a bandana. Every dog loves being fashionable.

I kind of want a viking hat. If that's not possible, I'll pick something else. :)

Thanks for the contest!

u/efxeditor · 1 pointr/C25K

These Are the ones that I bought. Wow! They're only $15.00 now! This is the link to the running belt I'm using. It's pretty terrific. No slipping or bouncing around when I run!

Good luck with your running!

u/HempHouse · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Thank you hello-everything for the contest & spreading the love!

These shorts would be an awesome gift for my boyfriend. He only has three pairs of shorts he wears again and again and his main pair just split down the crotch. Since they were really cheap this deodorant would help him out too. Most deodorants have the metal aluminum in them which is terrible for your body & doesn't agree with his skin. Thank you again!

Goodbye Eleven

u/coffeewithmyoxygen · 2 pointsr/C25K

I THINK I got them from Target about 6-7 months ago. I can’t think of any where else I have bought exercise pants recently. They’re technically more like yoga pants, I suppose. I honestly don’t know the difference between any exercise pants haha. They wick moisture and they’re super duper comfy.

My husband has a little fanny pack from Amazon that works well too! You can zip your phone in and it’s water proof I think.

u/prezcat · 5 pointsr/runner5k

I've got one of those Road IDs - they're pretty awesome. I have the slim version, and I wear it all the time. It's fairly inexpensive and I never have to worry about carrying an ID. I would wholeheartedly recommend getting one.
I also have a little Nathan Runner 5k Waist Pouch which I love. I put my phone in there and don't have to carry it around. When I've got a little cash, I'll grab one of these little hydration thingies.
I don't worry about my house key, my partner is always home when I go on a run. Running's not his thing. :)

u/underwear_underthere · 4 pointsr/xxfitness

I use Bluetooth headphones and this hip belt with pockets when I run and it works great! I have an iPhone 6, not the plus so it isn't humongous, but i feel like it's still too big to wear on my arm. The pockets on the hip hugger are both vertical and horizontal and I've never had an issue with feeling like my phone was going to fall out.

u/DjangoNinja · 2 pointsr/Mountaineering

That makes sense. I need to redo my layering system then I was under the impression wool was best for base layer before this due to its ability to stay warm while wet / sweating.

Still learning how to layer for summit attempts (6000m+) such as Acongagua etc. So I'd appreciate any advice on the below

My current layering / what I have now is:

Top:

MERIWOOL Mens Base Layer 100% Merino Wool Heavyweight 400g Half Zip Sweater

Mid layer is an Arcteryx Atom LT hoody.

Arcteryx Alpha SV for a hard shell. Figured this is better than Beta SV since it's higher pockets and more climbing / alpine focused to my understanding.

Arcteryx Cerium LT for a puffy / base camp.

Bottom:

Marmot precip pants as rain shell.
Standard Columbia ridge zip off hiking pants for approach
400gsm wool base layer long johns
Arcteryx polyester AR briefs and merino

Know I'm missing soft shell pants here... Not sure which to get. I've heard the outdoor Research cirque are good.

Feet:

Polyester / Nylon liner socks: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AK8EE4K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PL7QDb93KT3MG

Heavy thick alpaca socks. My feet get cold very easily. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018IY2K1G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_pK7QDb2W2EWE3

Lighter weight merino / darn tough and some kinesiology tape for wrapping blisters etc.

Not sure what I'm missing out of this and how to improve besides on obvious expedition parka for clothing. Boots etc excluded obviously.

I think the heavyweight merino base layer, mid insulated layer, and 800 fill down cover needing an expedition parka with a hard shell for potential wind on summit assuming it stays around 6000m?

If drying is a problem with merino.. I can add polyester / polypropylene base layer under and this, merino base layer, shell should be good for approach and anything under summit?

Higher altitude / cold add mid layer and shell in harsher conditions?

u/Impendingconfetti · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Seconding this.

I have a good amount of quality socks from when I was testing out different brands. CHUP, Anonymous Ism, People Socks, Wigwam, Smartwool, Kapital, Kirkland, Carhartt, Orvis and Darn Tough.

Darn Tough is easily my favorite, it really isn't even close. I don't think I will buy any other socks unless someone makes a really compelling argument to try out a different brand.

Just buy Darn Tough for everything. I have a thicker boot pair that is my favorite, a thinner type of the same length that is great for my closer fitting boots or sneakers and I have a pair that is about ankle height.

Actually sorry this is the internet.

That's pretty awesome then. If you can find some blocks, get working on those because they will help so much.

Get one of these for the tendonitis. Take it easy on jumping movements and heavy sprinting. I'd stay off the track due to that if anything

https://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Jumpers-Strap-Black-3-Count/dp/B01EUPDXEK

Once the knee is healed, I'd try to do a light interval workout once a week in the summer. 6x100m or 8x50m with lots of rest (basically just stay in shape while still doing something).

Then of course, get in the weight room. Plyos can be incorporated there and sometimes don't need a separate day.

u/treycook · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Nope, no tab on those! Here are the DT runners with a pull tab at the top. It looks fine from the side angle, but in person, they look more like they're folded over (especially when being worn), giving them a minor "dog-eared" appearance, if that makes sense.

Here is another shot of the women's version. Again, they look fine when they are fresh and new, but once worn in a bit, the tab just looks a bit raggedy and detract from your appearance - presuming you are wearing them as daily drivers, rather than just to the gym and back.

u/BeefSushi · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

These expandable fanny packs are great - you can fit so much inside, theres many different types..i can roll up a change of clothes and fit all my keys, etc. in one and they dont flop all over while running.... also, can you rent a locker at the gym to keep some items there?

u/xrobin · 1 pointr/Ultralight

I'm a fan of Under Armour briefs with cheap generic 2.5" shorts with the liner cut out like these. Feels great to have zero resistance in range of motion, and the modularity means I can wear the shorts while hanging the briefs up to dry. I recently got some Terrebonne Joggers for when I want pants and they seem like they're gonna work well.

u/Naughty_Taco · 1 pointr/running

I mostly use a Flip Belt but any running arm band or waist pack works!

I'd also recommend a pair of bluetooth earbuds depending on your budget and if you listen to music - once you find some that fit well for running it is a game changer.

u/yeahokayriiight · 31 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

What about one of those hip wrap fanny packs? They just look like the waistband of yoga pants, and they're super stretchy. Something like this, maybe?

u/33427 · 6 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I have like 3 of these. I really like em, it's my go to hoodie. Great for layering imo.

They're the same price on Amazon for me. I'd rather get it there.

u/nic5483 · 2 pointsr/C25K

My husband and I just got these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0023W1OA8/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. They're kinda pricey and make my feet hotter, but they are so comfortable. I think they definitely make a huge difference. I don't get blisters much but my husband was getting a ton before these socks and I think they're helping. Now if only we each had more than one pair...

u/theChaparral · 3 pointsr/running

I just recently bought a couple pair of short shorts (2-3 in inseam) both brands in the $15 dollar range.

The Time to Run Pace, and the Baleaf Pace I liked them both after a single wearing. The Time to Run is sewn a bit better and you have to size up according to their sizing chart, but the fabric of the Baleaf is softer. So far I like them both.

Game Gear has some nice made in the USA shorts, but the short short versions are nylon, and I don't like how they stretch out when it's raining or when your really sweating up a storm.

I caught some Soffee "Ranger Panties" on sale once, $10 for an orange pair... and they are Errr... Hooters girl shorts for guys. I still have a couple fucks to give before I wear those in public (but nice summer PJ's)

u/suddenlyian · 2 pointsr/running

Baleaf makes some solid pairs and you can find them on Amazon for cheap. I ran a marathon in them a few years back and loved them. They are definitely my go to shorts.

u/LaserBeamsCattleProd · 1 pointr/Basketball

Like every one said: Ice.

Some guys used to get some relief from a knee band. It compresses the meniscus tendon below the knee.

Again, ice is incredible, I used to ice like crazy after practices. You can also take NSAID's like Advil if you're a bit swollen, assuming you're not allergic or anything.

u/Affectionate_Bridge · 2 pointsr/Ultralight

A bit of a different suggestion for the bottom layer... I found these over the summer, perfect since I'm an extremely heavy sweater and will soak whatever I'm wearing. I have yet to find anything else that can dry as quickly as a pair of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003AU5W3W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you're willing to rock short shorts, I'm comfortable wearing just these when I go running at home. On the trail, I wear cargo style synthetic shorts over these and will just take off those shorts when I arrive at camp, leaving these on to dry from my body heat.

u/SetTheWorldOnFire · 1 pointr/running

Could you guys post links to your shorts please? Googling is hard with these vague descriptions.

I love super short shorts, but, having a large penis, I am forced to abandon them. also because of chafing.

I love these: http://www.amazon.com/Soffe-Mens-Running-Short-Black/dp/B003AU5VZ6

I really like these: http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/bcg-153-men-39-s-running-short/pid-998210?color=Black&N=46879274+10001&Ntt=3.5%22&Ntk=All

but I have to wear them with compression shorts also, mainly for chafing. Actually I haven't tried without, I will sometime. They are longer though. 3.5"

u/celestialpizza · 1 pointr/windowsphone

I was also looking into purchasing an armband for running with my 928. I ultimately decided to try out a waist pack instead. It works great, you barely notice it, and it fits snug against my waist with minimal bouncing. I can also fit my keys and driver's license in it with no problem. Definitely recommend.

u/RustyToddRoy · 1 pointr/running

BOA vs Soffe shorts? (I'm a dude if that matters)

Boring backstory: I'm getting back into running, just coming off anbackpacking trip so my cardio is in really good shape so my motivation is good.

Previously I wore generic above-the-knee synthetic shorts but they're a little snug because I'm about 20 lbs heavier than I was when I was into running. I want to pick up a pair of "real" running shorts to try them. I'm leaning towards BOA for dat 1" inseam for motivation to get good-looking legs again and so I can get this and this pattern specifically. Soffe is cheaper tho.

u/Fuck_Cilantro · 2 pointsr/running

I highly recommend a runners belt. I've used Spibelt and the Nathan 5k and have been happy with both.

u/cubman2000 · 3 pointsr/rollercoasters

tl;dr: Zipper Cargo Pocket Shorts or something like the Flip Belt. If you have more than what fits in either of those and don't want to wear a fanny pack, just plan to leave it in a bin or use lockers for whatever works best to carry your stuff.

u/bitemark01 · 4 pointsr/running

Came here to suggest the Flipbelt too! It's what I use, I used it in this race even :) It's probably the main gear I recommend aside from shoes, especially if you want to bring your phone along (plus you can put other things in it).

https://www.amazon.ca/Level-Terrain-FlipBelt-Black-Small/dp/B00JF9DZTK

u/Cualer · 6 pointsr/ImagineMusicFestival

I was worried about this as well and invested in a runner's belt that I've got under my shirt. It fits my phone, keys, ID and some cash and works well even with alot of movement and jumping around. It's also pretty comfy to wear :)

u/tkt2rid3 · 1 pointr/running

Not an arm band but a running belt which I use now bc I find it's more comfortable than having my phone on my arm and it's water proof

u/Jugthug42 · 5 pointsr/running

I just bought a Flip Belt and it is awesome.

Flip Belt

u/landtheplane · 6 pointsr/xxfitness

I have a flipbelt that works great for both.

Cargo shorts like everyone said. Camelbak is another one. Or if you like wearing gym shorts like I do, you should invest in a running belt which goes around your waist so you know it is always on you. Plus it's harder for people to steal from you.

Maybe something like a Flip Belt? It would look like an extra wide belt, but can hold quite a bit. It doesn't budge if he's wearing the right size.

I guess they would get worn down over time through kicking the heavy bag. That said, I used to train No Gi Jiu Jitsu with these on and they didn't wear down that much over 12 months of training in them 4 hours per week! (we did quite a lot of single and double leg takedowns which involved sliding the knees along the mats too and I didn't get any holes in mine).

The gym I box at is in an old farm outhouse building with wooden floors, it's very cold in there at the moment! I layer up my torso with a T-shirt and thick hoodie and usually find I feel pretty warm once I start moving around, I usually end up removing the hoodie after about 20 minutes because it's too hot!

I use this waist pack: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000ANG1E/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

easily holds my phone, keys and a little bit of money (for emergencies).

What do you think of Take Five's products? I found a tight that is only $8 on Amazon.

I have a belt to hold my student pass and my phone. It has slits so you can fit your stuff in and take it out quickly. Lots of different brands available but mine is a Flip Belt.

I was in your boat a week ago, I found this and I am so glad that I did. It is so comfortable, phone fits perfectly, I think an armband with this big of a phone is a little ridiculous. I have simple earbuds with an angled connector and then I just pin those to my shit.

I couldn't find an armband that would fit this phone and was decent quality.

  1. I have an older version of the Nathan Running Belt that does a great job holding a house key, my phone, and a pack of Clif Bloks if I need them. I also adore my Amphipod Bottle. It has a pocket for some nutrition too. I usually use Nuun tablets to keep hydrated on long runs or hot days.
  2. I very rarely now use my Amphipod Belt with extra bottle on long runs. As I have become a stronger runner and lost weight I haven't needed two bottles on long runs on hot days. It is a lot to carry, but occasionally bring it on real scorchers especially if I am doing one of the exposed trail runs near my house with a lot of elevation change.
  3. Nope :-)
  4. For long runs I haven't been super clear on when to fuel up, and how often, etc. I am defining long as anything over 10k for me personally.

You don't need anything except shorts and shoes for the next 5 months in most of the US. Buy last years shoes and $11 shorts http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003AU5VZ6/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think a backpack is overkill. Just get a running belt or a Flip Belt. They've a much smaller profile, are much lighter, and won't bounce around since they're made of elastic and pull tight to the body.

u/Nignabit · 5 pointsr/streetwear

Picked this one up when they were on sale for $14. Should be able to get one for around $20.

Darn Tough.

They are called Darn Tough for a reason.

They are made in the US by a US owned company.

They have an unconditional lifetime guarantee (I’ve replaced mine after my dog ate one).

What more must I say?

I've been looking at this waist pack for a while now, have you ever seen it?

u/dalhectar · 7 pointsr/Fitness

Ranger Panties, because you don't skip leg day.

u/BexKix · 1 pointr/running

I own both. My Amphipod goes with me when I need water and/or gels - which for me is either wicked hot days or anything over 70-75 minutes. Read: heavier-duty needs.

I have a SPIbelt knockoff called a Go Belt that I use when I am racing 5k's -it works well to hold my iPhone in a baggie (to make it sweatproof) and my car key.

My 2c is the SPIbelt (or Go Belt) will serve you well.

u/TMWNN · 2 pointsr/running

>BTW: No, I don't want to run w/a fanny pack. ;)

Have you tried it? This pack is invisible under my running singlet. Any pack is going to be less obtrusive than an armband.

Running/workout belt I use is no longer sold, but maybe the updated version works

I use this cheap running belt. It more than fits my GS4 and has a smaller zip pocket that fits a key, two emergency dog poop bags in case the pup poops a hat-trick, and a runner ID.

Haven't used this, but it seems killer and has tons of good reviews: Flipbelt

Hasn’t failed me yet.

u/Alkali_V2 · 3 pointsr/nexus6

I know the N6 is going to be bigger than the Note 4, but the Nathan's 5K running pack found here: http://www.amazon.com/Nathan-Runners-Waist-Pack-Black/dp/B0000ANG1E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415950251&sr=8-1&keywords=nathan+running+pack

will hold a Note 3 according to reviewers. I have it, but I've only ever put an S5 in there so I have no way to report first hand that this will fit. But it is phenomenal for running on treadmills or on the road and keep your pockets empty. Terrible for situps and crunches though sadly.

I had a similar issue and used one of these knee straps, and it solved the problem. If it's not much pain then maybe give it a try. If it is much pain then just get to the doctor. Regardless, ice the crap out of it.
