(Part 2) Reddit mentions: The best seasonal lighting

These were one of my favorite things I brought to the burn last year (these and canned black olives, that is (⌒▽⌒)
I'd wrap a string around my hips, maybe one loosely like a long necklace, and stuff one in the mesh netting part of my CamelBak at night, so I'd be fully illuminated.

EL wire is great too, of course, but I like the string lights, because with EL wire you can see exactly where it is (in a tangled mess in my CamelBak, for example), so it's not as aesthetically pleasing as the string lights without a little bit more work. String lights are a lot more forgiving and really good for when you're already drunk and realize the sun is going down and don't want to be a darkwad, so you can just wrap them, shove them, string them, etc. anywhere.

Lastly, thanks to the Big Ticket Fiasco (and having school the day the tickets went on sale and trusting a friend to get my tickets who turned out to be very untrustworthy), I'm not going to the Burn this year. It kept really bumming me out until I decided that I could send my burner friends to the playa with a bunch of gifts to gift out and it'd be like a part of me was there with all of you. This is my very first post in this community, so someone please let me know if it's against the rules, but I would like to gift you some Burning Man swag. This is in no way to curry favor or try to win the contest or whatever- I just want to gift to a fellow burner and help my own selfish wish of having something I made on the playa this year.

I just got a new die-cutter, here is a pic of a decal I just made for my car. Would you (or any other burners in this thread, for that matter) like a couple? As per the rules, I have to mention that since they're "personal items" and not from Amazon itself that you have to be comfortable PMing me your address so I can send them.

I've been cosplaying Voltron since 2016 with the group of Paladins that I also created. Believe it or not this was my first EVA foam build. I went into it with very little experience w/ EVA foam and foam smithing in general. I can knit pick everything wrong with my costumes and how I'd do it differently.

I am currently working on a version 2.0 for my Voltron and all the Paladins. I'll be doing many things differently, but i will likely take things I hated about my costumes and change them as well as take inspiration from Dan Morash's Paladin armor. IMO, his is the closest to blending both screen accuracy and functionality.

With that said, my advice on the armor parts from head to toe. This info is all the things I will be doing for my version 2.0

• Helmet - use the standard floor mat EVA foam for this. Also, I think Evil Ted and Punished Props gave a pattern for it free.
  
  
• Lens - you can use colored gels or clear plastic sheets
  
  
• Chest & Back & Collar - use the standard floor mat EVA foam. The thickness will provide strength and rigidity.
  
  
• Chevron (emblem) - use your standard 2mm craft foam.
  
  
• Rib Covers - use anywhere between 6mm - 8mm EVA foam. Reason for this is that it will be easier for you to allow your arms to hang to your sides w/out adding additional thickness to get in the way of movement.
  
  
• Jet Pack - use standard floor mat EVA foam. It will be hollow, you can create an opening on the inside back piece of your armor to allow access to it. You can store your phone, wallet, or whatever you want in it! For mine, I stored their battery packs for the lights.
  
  
• Shoulder Covers (pauldrons?) - use the standard floor mat EVA foam. Again, for strength and rigidity. It's not really an area that has a huge range of motion that the thickness will impede your movement. But try not to affix it directly to the chest armor. Doing that will limit your range of motion. Instead, use elastic straps to connect them.
  
  
• Biceps - use 6mm foam for this. This is for better range of motion and less restriction.
  
  
• Elbows - you can use anything for this really, anywhere from 2mm - 12mm can work. The thicker you go, the more contouring and shaping you can do.
  
  
• Forearms (bracers) - use anywhere between 6mm - 8mm. The flexibility will allow to easily slip it on and off. Although, if you find that the fitting is going to be more snug than loose, then you will want to go w/ the 10mm - 12mm (floor mat) foam for this. The durability and rigidity will help in prying it on and off w/out ripping the foam. Use 2mm craft foam for the detailing.
  
  
• Belt - use 6mm - 8mm foam
  
  
• Thighs - use 6mm foam for better range of motion and it will also allow you to walk more casually than using floor mat EVA.
  
  
• Knees - use 4mm - 12mm for this, it's really preference. Personally I'd go w/ the standard floor mat EVA foam (12mm) because it does serve a purpose. You can get on your knees to take kneeling poses etc...
  
  
• Shin/Calves - similar to your forearms, this can be anywhere between 6mm - 12mm. Depending on how snug you make it, the rigidity or flexibility will be a factor. The detailing can be done w/ 2mm craft foam and the round circles on the ankles can be done w/ the floor mat EVA.
  
  
• Feet Covers - this is optional. I've seen people just go w/ a standard white shoe or a black shoe. For my first set, I had my guys wear black shoes and had the foot cover attached to the shin/calves armor. I don't think I'll do it any differently this time around.
  
  
• Lighting - you could opt to just paint them in, which is effective in of itself. Or if you want to add lights to all, you can go w/ EL Tape & EL Panels
  
  
• Paint - I used and will likely use the Rustoleum spray paints again. When I met Joaquim Dos Santos last year, he actually asked me about my paint and complemented at how accurate they were to the color match.
  
  Additionally: Here is a post I did for people wanting to get into foam smithing. I highly recommend getting your foam from TNT Cosplay supply. For the Floor Mat EVA, you can easily get them at most hardware stores.

This is the one I bought. There is a 45 piece available for 11 as well. Bits are great. Strong, but should still give before breaking a screw in something. Are magnetic too, great for small screws. Screwdriver and extender are solid, but the money obviously went into the bits and that's ok. Come with really cheap tweezers too. Love the case though. Can easily mount on and screw on your wall. Also the party trick, the bits pop outward for easy access when you open the lid.

I got them to fix my istick 100w that I broke. Worked great, have used many times. Still, be careful what you do. Companies are very quick to void a warranty if they find out you opened it up.

What a great project! I've been daydreaming about automating an off-grid cabin, which has some similarities. One thing I think you should keep in mind: LTE coverage isn't universal (in the US, at least) especially in places you can go in a van, and you're probably better off keeping everything local. Both Alexa and SmartThings require an internet connection to work, and most smart tvs work best with streaming services, which obviously require internet and will also eat through your data alotment.

It also seems like your mindset is shrinking a smarthome to fit a van, rather than building up from scratch. I would humbly suggest taking a minimalist approach, to stretch your living space and energy budget as far as possible.

• Voice Assistant: Snips.ai, running on a Raspberry Pi.
  
• Smart Home Hub: Home Assistant, running on a Raspberry Pi (preferably the same one, though I'm not sure if that's possible).
  
• RGBW 12v LED strips: hard wire controlled by the Home Assistant Pi GPIO (Home Assistant has a GPIO plugin/library/feature) with an amplifier like this one between the Pi and the led strip(s).
  
• Ditch the Google Wifi router entirely and just get a LTE hotspot that includes a built-in wifi router.
  
• Consider ditching the TV. I would get a laptop (maybe look into what Cortana can do these days) with a lot of disk space, and install the Plex server and client both on the laptop. I think this allows the most flexibility and reliability. You might also consider a tablet mounted on a gooseneck, or even a VR headset with a theater app.
  
• Control other lights and appliances with a relay board hooked up the the Home Assistant Pi. FYI, that Zwave fan switch you linked only works with 120 VAC power, and I'd be surprised if the van's ventilation fan doesn't operate on 12 VDC.
  
  I'm sure there's a number of other features of van life that I haven't thought of (tank levels, maybe air quality), but I would try to keep those local (and hard-wired) to a Raspberry Pi (or similar low-power computer) rather than complicate things with an additional wireless protocol (one the of the advantages of a van is it's so small!) or an internet connection.

Can’t find a link, but I had it in my garage from another project

There is a strip that holds the soffit in place on the far side from the house that was a perfect channel for the LED strip. You can buy white aluminium channels for LED strips with nice frost glazing that diffuses the light. I would have bought them, but soffit and house trim are all brown and I could not find it in brown. I cleaned the surface of the house, then suck the tape to the strip and ran a knife down the side to cut it in half. I then attached it all to the house. 20m fit perfectly around the lower level trim on my house.

I have built-in shelves all around the inside of my garage. So I put the power supply on an upper shelf near the centre of the strips. I picked 12V strips over 5V strips to minimize voltage drops. There are numerous online voltage drop calculators, I used this one:

My electrical engineering friends tell me I need to size the wire for no more than a 3% voltage drop. That might be a bit overkill for low-voltage LED lights, but that’s what is in the CEC for building wiring. I ended up using 14-gauge wire and ran power to each strip. It worked out to be a bit more than a 3% loss. I used the brown thermostat wire to tee off the main line indoors and ran it through the wall to power the strips. Each connection was done using crimp-style splice connectors that I had left-over from wiring a stereo in my boat.

On the far end I mounted the Magic LED Bluetooth controller (inside) and ran an extra run of the thermostat wire for the data signal. The controller worked great once I put in the right settings. I also set the wiring up so I can connect the sound activated controller outside. On Halloween I plan on setting up some singing pumpkins and have the lights dance to the music.

I hope this helps and good luck with your project. A key thing to keep in mind is you need to run power to each strip, otherwise, you will have too much line-loss, generate lots of heat, and the colours will be different on the far end. It can, and should, come from the same power supply, but just run additional power lines out to each strip.

Ahhh, well since you give me a great link to the molding side of it, maybe I can help you on the controller side.

Fibaro RGBW Micro Controller Z-wave, Works with RGB/RGBW LED Strips

Now, I know what you'll think, because I thought it too - $70 for a dinky Z-Wave LED light controller? WTF?!

But it's actually so much more. Besides DC in (BTW, it takes 12 or 24volts, too) & Ground there's "IN1", "IN2", "IN3", "IN4", "R", "G", "B", "W". And the manual is odd too. You connect the LEDs up, then you have to wire switches into it too, etc etc - I haven't totally figured it out, but it's kinda neat. Also you can get it running on SmartThings. I've just migrated from ST to Home Assistant with a Aeotec Z-Wave stick and a deConz Zigbee stick.

The 4 "IN"s can be used for multiple sensors - which I might have to give a shot.

Anyway, what I've done is hookup 2 light strips to the controller - one is RGB, the other cold white (It's what I have at hand, and I like the color reproduction etc etc, haven't played with many RGBW lights). I typically use a white LED strip with 60 LEDs/meter, and then the RGB is 120 LEDs/meter.

You can control almost an unlimited number of strips with the one Fibaro controller - the secret is to add in RGB LED Amplifiers when the colors start going wonky. Honestly, they're cheap enough I do it between every set of LEDs I intend to connect together.

In testing, I found I like the look for the RGB LEDs closer to the wall, and then the White strip.

So there you go - hope I didn't confuse you there, trying to bang this out and get back to running ethernet throughout the house. Let me know if you have any questions.

They were $16 when I bought them, Amazon prices change a lot so I'm sure they'll go down again at some point. Anyway, they work great: has a hook to hang the battery pack (uses 4 AA batteries), nice and bright, water resistant.

One of the best features imo is that they'll automatically shut off after 6hrs. Next day they'll turn on again at the same time for 6hrs again (unless you turn them on earlier, or turn them off yourself).

I took them into the festival with me to wrap around myself (so my group members could see me and we could stay together), and to illuminate around our blanket whenever we parked in the forest or at a stage. I need to get a couple more sets exclusively for our campsite

Not OP, but have done some vehicle/trailer lighting/wiring before.

Working with 12V DC is relatively safe, just make sure not to short the ends. You can, of course, disconnect the battery if you're worried about it (if you're not worried about it, just leave the outside light switch off or find the fuse that goes to it and flip it off). I've wired up a good bit of stuff in 12VDC with it live and haven't ever been shocked, though that's not to say there isn't risk. At a minimum I'd recommend shutting off the light switch.

What you're looking for are 12V LED Light strips.

I'd recommend getting some waterproof, and adhesion would be my main concern as I'm driving down the highway, I wouldn't want them blowing off.

Here is what I did last year. All of it survived the burn, vinegar cleaning, various other washings, and is ready for the playa again. Fresh batts will be installed closer to departure time.

Wheel lights. Enough for once around a 26"dia wheel. Blue up front, red on back. 3AAs lasted all week.


Tail light, 2AAAs last all week, lots of settings.

Dual duty Head light and Holder 3AAAs needed changing at four days. I actually had two of these. ;)

I also had a flag on my bike with a battery operated GlowStick at the top.

The frame was 'traced' with Reflector Tape. When hit with light, it glows like Tron movie vehicles. Not my bike, a pic from the Jungle's customer pic gallery. I traced the frame and made connections just as the frame does. Gives a pretty cool effect. :)

Always bring extra batts, its good practice.

But I used these lights linked on the outside with fake plants and flowers for an over grown look.

My amazon order history wont let me go back to the lights i used for the interior but they're the water proof strip lights that have adhesive on the back. They can change colors and it's more a Neon glow. They fit nicely around the interior of the helmet and create a dope ambient glow.


Edit: * Regardless of the adhesive you'll want to use super glue to really secure the lights and the battery pack.

Basic backstory with moderately more details- I wasn't partaking and knew I'd be partying 4 days in a row, so wanted something to lean on for the last day. I could have made a simple totem... but fuck that, I wanted that dual saber effect.

Polycarbonate tubing- bloody expensive but the core piece for it. I also ran a wooden dowel down the center of one of the lengths because I had it sitting around.

El wire - I had two kits running on one of them and three on the other. In retrospect, I'd rather get a more powerful inverter and just run more batteries in to it- kind of a pain to deal with three exterior pieces.

I think I used this kit... not sure, never know with how much stuff gets posted nowadays.


Other than that, I had a 3/4 inch PVC pipe length about a foot long and a T that was 3/4 by 3/4 with the split off as 1/2 inch. (I know what you're thinking- how's 3/4 inch PVC work? PVC's standard measurement looks at the ID, or inside diameter- while polycarbonate tubing's standard measurement looks at the OD, or outer diameter. I found 1 inch polycarb + some tape around it was able to fit in a 3/4 inch T shaped PVC fitting. Illogical... but I promise, it works.) Tee joint is like this. Then I wrapped the 3/4 inch PVC handle in baseball bat grip tape and called it a day- basically anything to make it comfortable to hold on to.

After that, I ran the wire down the interior of the polycarb and ran the power packs for the el wire out the 1/2inch split off of the PVC T piece. Super glue, screw both pipes in to the tee so that they won't fall off (now I know... screwed that up @EDC, was very frustrating to suddenly feel the piece fall off the handle if you lifted it wrong and have batteries go flying in every direction as it smashed into the ground) and it's lit fam!

To top it off: what's the point in having a walking stick, if you're going to mess it up every time it touches the ground? Fortunately, there's an answer for that! I put some of the rubber feet that you can attach to a cane on the bottoms. Not sure if that was 3/4 inch or 1 inch size, this is just a random link so you get the picture.

Difficulty... none. Hardest part was figuring out which sized pieces to use and finding polycarbonate tubing, could have ordered it online but it was a 20-30 minute detour from my commute so just did that instead. As far as figuring out which pieces to use... I instinctively bought more 1 inch PVC pieces than I'd care to admit. Fortunately it's good for setting up sprinkler systems.

End result? I felt like a shaman bouncing around on my staff by Gouryella, and was able to rally for the rest of Dreamstate after the wonderful set full of uplift.

I also stacked both totems on top of each other and recorded Prydz... haven't bothered to stitch all that footage together yet though. Maybe this weekend- it's cool to see what the crowd looked like from above.

Last year we brought this Zinka sunblock and it was a lot of fun... everyone wants to stay protected from the sun and have fun! They don't seem to have any available for prime, but it's worth it.

or you could go for a nighttime fun thing and get some El wire... totally portable and has different flash settings. Just bring extra batteries! They are fun to watch/wear and make you stand out at night with your group so you can find each other better. Just wrap the wire around yourself, your hat, you bag.. whatever and turn it on!

So, here is what I did. First time burner. I ordered a bunch of EL Wire off of Amazon for cheap (exact pack I got: http://www.amazon.com/Neon-Glowing-Strobing-Electroluminescent-Wires/dp/B003J9BD50/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1312231941&sr=8-4), and then went through the womens sections in a bunch of different stores. Why Women's? Because, for some reason, their clothes are more fun. At Old Navy I got an XXL Womens Turtleneck and a damaged v-neckish jacket thing. I turned the Jacket into a vest. I got 3/4 of a yard of Fur from Jo Anns, took some old pants, turned them into fur pants with fabric glue (It's really easy, honestly. Cut some fur off the yard, put glue on it, put on pants). And then, I went to Goodwill and got some more womens clothing... A long Zebra jacket that I'm gonna put EL Wire on, a small fur vest, and some white beach pants.

My outfits, basically, are -

All White fur Pants + Turtle neck + Fur Vest = Nighttime Party time
Zebra Print Jacket + Fur Pants = Zesty Night Funtastic Bombastic
Jacket-turned Vest + Sleeves from it on legs = Halfnaked Daytime Fun
Beach Pants + Jacket turned Vest = Slammin Not-naked daytime Adventuretime

I just made up those names on the spot... but you get the picture. It's pretty easy. I put the leftover fur on my bike, and on my goggles, and I still have some left. I think I'll just put it randomly on some clothes. I use the EL Wire + safety pins to highlight my clothes.

Double edit: Ask your female friends if you can raid their closets for burning man gear. Chances are, if your friends are awesome, they'll get totally excited and give you a bunch of ridiculous shit. Also, they'll probably want to get drunk and dress you up in stupid shit. It's win-win. Get out of your comfort zone! I did. It's my first burn, FUCK IT!

If you’re ever interested in mixing things up with your tail in the future, (since you’ve already opened it up and are skilled at stitching it back together) you might try stuffing it with fairy/string lights. They’re very tiny LED lights that are cool (temperature) and energy efficient. They would make your tail look like it’s glowing from within and give it a magical feel after the sun goes down.

Wrapping them around the outside of the tail would give a different, more sparkly effect. If you wanted to, you could even trace out various shapes with the lights, like a heart (or row of hearts), or fox head, etc.

I'd say this is a pretty ambitious first project, but what better way to learn than to fail until you succeed. I did this project for a friend on a 75" tv. Honestly to do this for your computer you wouldn't use a raspberry, you would use your computer as the "brain" instead of a pi. Okay I am creating my spare room into a studio and dark room. I am curious if safelights have something special to them or if it is just a red light? I'm so over the last minute, impulse purchased el-wire ready-to-wear kits that I've had spotty luck with. Less than four dollars for an LED light string? That's insane, and cheap enough to pack a few spares without adding too much to the "suddenly costing you more than you planned" budget.

For your bike, you want one of these to illuminate the ground around you and make you visible from afar, and one of these to illuminate the frame and make your specific dimensions visible from up close.

For your body and backpack you want a few of these to light you up ad hoc.

The links I provided are all items I have bought several times on Amazon USA and used and successfully re-used on playa. They are the best combination of price, quality, and durability. They all run on AA batteries.

I've done a leotard-esque suit and sewed EL wire onto it. Just gotta have somewhere to attach the battery pack. I bought Sam's disc from ToysRUs (it has a switch where it will light up every few seconds and with the press of a button lights up more and makes noise) and just held on to it/wore it around my arm when I was in costume.

I think for Flynn's coat you would want to go with EL tape for the sake of being true to film. You could probably tape or glue the back of it to the inside of a hooded cloak. I've not used the tape, but the EL wire works fantastically, I've worn the suit twice in two years to long parties and have yet to replace the batteries. The wires don't get hot and can take a lot of strain too! Best of luck to you.

I wore these for my Carnaval costume this year, they were great. They operate on a coin battery, so the switch is small and easy to hide, they were super bright and they lasted all night. They come in tons of colors too and they're relatively cheap.

I took the EL panel and applied a vinyl sticker I custom cut on a Cricut machine, then hot glued the panel to the bag. The EL wires on the bag were attached using fishing string, sewn on every few inches. Same with the LEDs, every few inches I attached them to the arm straps using fishing string and a needle. But any of the WS2812b LED strips will work. There are also multiple different strips that are either enclosed in a silicon tube, or bare strip.

You also could have made the holes closer together on your 2x4 soldering jig so that you wouldn't have to bend the wires. Kinda negates the entire point of the 2x4 soldering jig lol. Hindsight on that i'm sure.

I actually really love battery powered LED christmas light strings. I've found them at stores like Fred Meyers as well as on Amazon.... They're decently bright, super-portable, and I haven't had as many problems with connections as I have had with el-wire. That being said, it's fun to do a mix of el-wire and LED christmas lights...

More about lights- you need to have lights on yourself and your bike, enough on all sides so you are clearly visible from every angle (a headlamp does no good if someone is coming up on you from behind). The good news is that the price of led strands is low enough that you can easily buy a bunch on Amazon for fairly cheap. Here is a link to strands I've used in the past:

These are lightweight, can easily be applied to any outfit with safety pins, and can be attached to a bike frame and wheels using electrical tape. (No need to remove them when you're away from your bike, I've never heard of anyone taking the time to peel off electrical tape to steal these lights). They run on standard watch batteries, so bring some spares and you should be good to go.

Those are 3528 LEDs, a strip of 5050 RGB like this will perform much better. For 5050, each chip has 3 LEDs, one of each color. The 3528 has a seperate color for each chip. This means the 5050 is ~3 times as bright and will offer better whites as the colors are less spread out.

I slipped the battery pack into the cuff and strung the lights through in a zigzag pattern. Don’t wrap it around in a circle because the cuff won’t stretch as much due to the copper wire and will be super tight. The zigzag gives it a little wiggle room.

Yeah you can go to just about any craft store this time of the year and get a little battery operated pack of lights.

I would sew the pack to the inside or back of stocking and use a knife to puncture holes through the inside of the stocking to so they the wire is not visible.

Then depending on how far you want to go with it you could just do it randomly or attempt to make it look like a word. Randomly would be a lot less time.

With LED lights you're dealing with much smaller bulbs than traditional lights, but they also put off brighter light. Another advantage would be making the incisions into the stocking to get them to be visible since they are much smaller.

I really dig these AA powered string lights. You get great diffused light from them because the individual lights are so far apart. To me diffuse light is the whole point of a lantern.

You want to use 24v strip in these cases in order to not have to deal with power injection, which is where novices can easily get into trouble. With 24v you can run up to 10M, or 32.8ft, and is such often sold in 10M reels. Purchase four of these and cut each down to the length of it's respective wall, being sure to only cut on the line in the center of the copper pads every 6 LEDs.

{With addressable strip, the pixel "size" is TYPICALLY determined by voltage, so for 24v strip, each 6 LEDs will act as a single "pixel," when playing back patterns, 12v strip is 3 LEDs, 5v is 1.}

After cutting the strip to length, you will want to remove the connectors from the cut off ends and solder them to your new ends. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THIS SCENARIO TO NOT solder on the RED (+24v) wire, as it will be safer to use 4 smaller power supplies, you are only wanting to interconnect the green Data wire and white Ground wire between each strip. If using IP68 waterproof strip, don't forget to remove the silicone endcap from your cut end, replacing it on the new end with a dab of silicone sealant.

Attach the 2.1mm socket adapters to the RED (+) and White (-) bare wires at the beginning of each strip using a jewelers screwdriver. Connect the 3-pin connectors between each strip, and tape off the bare wires with electrical tape, then connect the PSUs to the last three strips. For the first strip, connect it's PSU to the 2.1mm splitter, plugging one end into the strip and the other into the controller. Wire the 3pin connector included with the controller to the Data and Ground of the controller, again in this case, DO NOT CONNECT THE RED (+24v) WIRE to the controller; just wrap the end in electrical tape. Finally, connect the 3-pin connector from the controller to the first strip and power up your PSUs. From here it's just configuring the controller with your phone or tablet.

The adhevesive on the strips is strong enough to hold on the sides but the top kept falling off so I added small 3M strips but the lights already come with some plastic retainers for the top.

For those pining for these (myself included!) you can make them yourself using a technique like the one they show here. The girls use T90 wire but honestly you could probably get away with coat hangers or any 14+ gauge electrical wire.

the copper wire in between the lights is so thin that they are way less noticeable (sometimes not noticeable at all depending on your aperature)

No need for an instructional video or "design string". Use plenty of normal tape beforehand to plan out the design. I probably went through 20 ft. of tape before I came to my final design. Cut thin pieces of the clear mounting tape and run the wire/string alongside it. I also used the tape to mount the battery box but I don't trust it long-term. Will eventually figure out a more stable way of mounting it.

Be meticulous and precise and the results should turn out amazingly. I spent around an hour and 20 min. cutting the tape and running the EL string and 20 min. doing the EL tape.

Now, as none of us have actually seen the final product of the official LightMode Helmet kit, I can't say if what they are providing is the same thing. My helmet looks terrible in daylight (as seen in the not-in-the-dark photos) but for sure looks just like the product being shown in their promo video.

You’d be better off not using an inverter, since you’d be going DC > AC > DC.
If you bought something like I’ve linked, you can look at the sticker on the plug when it arrives to see its output, and then connect up however many batteries in series to match.

These are the lights I used in my Eskimo Wide 1 inferno. I wired up a power box with 4 switches and put a strip on each pole. They are nice and bright when they are all on but the switches allow me to turn them on individually.

  The glue gun and flower I got from Micheal's craft store. I also drilled a small hole into the center of the base and stuck the flower in, hot glued inside the hole and around the bottom of the flower for extra support.
  
  The led's came on a lengthy wire, so I cut them down to a size and wrapped them on the inside of the lip of the wooden stand, giving the glass dome plenty of room to sit.

A piece of PVC pipe, some LED strips or EL Wire zip tied around it in a spiral and there ya go. You could make something like that in 20 minutes.

To do it on the cheap and easy, order these, each strand is 9ft long. Take the battery pack to Home Depot and find a 10ft length of PVC that it will fit inside of, probably 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" and get a couple end caps.

Drill a hole in the end caps and stuff the battery packs inside each end, run the EL Wire out the hold and around the pole. Zip tie in place and there ya go.

Not fancy or anything, but dead simple and cheap. LED strips would be brighter.

An LED strip like this rigged to a 12v power supply, batteries stuffed into the PVC would work and be a lot brighter. Plus you'd have a remote for changing the colors.

Uhhh This might be something you'd like... I see some comments about day Z and zombie apocalypse here. A quick toolkit is excellent and necessary for hotwiring abandoned cars, or breaking into storehouses, or what have you.

I don't think I can buy a lockpick on amazon otherwise I'd suggest that. ;)

I don't actually know, it was just an example of the types of things you can find out there. Amazon has them as well. EL Panel and EL Wire. Though in that case you would need to do a bit of splicing and soldering to make it run off of one battery pack.

EL stands for Electro-Luminescent, meaning when you run a current through the material it gives off light.

I have a 2009 Shadow, there is no tach. I'm pretty used to how it feels now.

I think you'll want to go with EL tape, amazon has it decently cheap. Each piece will come with an inverter on each end, and you can cut it it half and have two working pieces. I'm sure you would be able to spirit gum it to yourself. EL wire wont get your effect fully since it is a lot thinner.

I bought 2 16ft led strips from amazon. They were around 16-17 dollars each and have remotes. Do be warned though if you have a tv in your room the radio signals from those remotes do sometimes change the lights colors.
