Thanks!

You can start pretty simple. All you HAVE to have is a decent knife. A simple Mora knife is what I use a lot. You can always go for nicer knives if you prefer but a Mora will do wonders because of the Scandi grind edge. Any sharp knife will carve but I personally recommend knives with a Scandi grind because they can cut deeper and they offer more controlled cuts.

Here are my typical spoon carving tools

Gransfors Brooks wildlife hatchet but you can use cheaper options like a Fiskars hatchet. You don't HAVE to have a hatchet, it just helps take out large waste pieces quicker.

Mora knife for general shaping and carving.

  • Alternatively, the Mora Eldris is another good carving option with a grippier rubber handle, contemporary colors and a shorter blade. Also the whole thing is basically waterproof so you don't have to worry about the handle or metal getting wet or anything. It's also small enough to pretty comfortably fit in a pocket.

Pfeil palm gouge for scooping out the bowls of spoons. This CAN be done with the knife but it is a huge pain. You could also Dremel the bowl out if you have one and don't want to buy a gouge.

Opinel folding saw for making stop cuts and cutting wood to length. Any wood saw will do though.

Other than that just some sandpaper and some food safe oil like mineral oil or Howard's butcher block conditioner to finish it off and make it water resistant.

    Resources

Here is a great video of Jill Swan showing how to carve a spoon with a hatchet, saw, knife, and gouge.

Here is a video with Ben Orford showing his process for carving a spoon as well. He uses a hook knife instead of a gouge for scooping the bowl out. Both methods work but I find a palm gouge to be easier to work with and a bit easier to sharpen.

Here is a video with Barn The Spoon using an axe a knife and a hook-knife.

If you don't want to spend the money on a gouge or a hook knife then you can always carve a Spatula because they don't require a bowl!

    TIPS

You can avoid using an axe by using a saw to make a series of stop cuts and then sawing down or using your knife to "baton" off the side pieces. You can also just knife carve the whole thing with a knife but it will take way more time.

Wood: make sure your wood is food safe. Most fruit woods and oak and maple or birch are perfectly safe. Here is a list of common spoon carving woods

  • I personally prefer using Birch because it looks nice, is pretty tough, food safe, and is quite enjoyable to carve both green or seasoned.

  • I personally suggest carving seasoned wood because you don't have to worry about it potentially splitting or cracking while it dries. Greenwood is WAY WAY easier to carve but putting in all the work just to have a spoon crack can be heart breaking. If you are going to carve seasoned wood then you also want to make sure you aren't choosing a super hard wood that will be a huge pain to carve. This is another reason I love Birch. Maple is also pretty easy to carve seasoned but a little harder and can tear out if your tools aren't super sharp.

Make sure your tools are sharp! A super sharp knife, hatchet, and gouge not only makes the work a lot easier and enjoyable but also a lot safer because you have way less chance of slipping. There are tons of videos on youtube on how to sharpen knives, specifically scandi grind knives, hatchets, and gouges.

Just have fun! Your first couple of project may not come out beautiful but you will get the hang of it.

5 knives

Above is a link to 5 folding knives that may or may not fit what you're looking for and 4 are well within your price range of under $120. One is slightly above at 139.00 on Amazon, but the Chrome extension called Honey is currently allowing a $10 discount. All are made by Kershaw/ZT.

  1. The ZT 0350 is the top knife with the curvy ergonomics to it. It's probably the most basic ZT folder and is currently the only ZT knife I own. It is good for larger hands, it's very sturdy (and heavy) and technically more than $120 but only barely.

  2. The Kershaw Fatback is next to it and has a more triangular appearance. Relatively newer offering from Kershaw, I think, but is certainly proving to be popular. It's as long when closed as the ZT 0350 but is thicker from one scale to the other on the handle AND is lighter. The actual specs for this and all the knives mentioned can be found by Googling them. This knife is currently under $25.

  3. The Kershaw Skyline is probably the most well known knife, I wouldn't be surprised is this has its own lore here on r/knives. It's popular for a reason being lightweight, and well tested as an older, mainstay model from Kershaw. As you can see, mine is showing wear and scratches compared to the other knives! Amazon is currently listing the basic version of this knife for $46.

  4. The next one is the Kershaw OD-1 which is DISCONTINUED. I didn't know this when I took a photo of it for you and started this list. This means the price is higher than you'd pay normally and isn't really available on Amazon or in stores. You can find it on the link provided (I think) which is to one Stop Knife Shop, you can also try Ebay or Bladeforums to find a used one. The link provided appears to be offering this knife for $53, but I don't know what condition that's in. The one I bought on Amazon back in like 2013 or whatever was ~$30-$35. I actually have two of them, but I'm not sure where the other came from. They are cool knives, fun to play with, but not tacticool.

  5. The last one pictured is the Kershaw Cryo and is currently available on Amazon for ~$19. It is the smallest of the knives shown, smaller than the Fatback with the triangular handle by what looks like 2 inches when open. This would be a great beater knife, something that would be a fine flipper and used briefly but would not be comfortable for extended use, especially in large hands. If memory serves, there's two different Cryo models with 2 different sizes, but I have only the one you see. Could be the smaller of the two models.

NOT PICTURED but I do also have the Kershaw Blur which Amazon is listing at ~$35 currently which is HIGHLY recommended even though it doesn't have a flipper. It's spring assisted opening and a very comfortable grip for larger hands. That price is so good, they're normally $55-$60 that I'm grabbing one of them again as an extra.

I could list like 4-5 more Kershaw knives but my comment is too long already. If you would prefer more variety in recommendation, Spyderco has some solid options but if you want to go BALLS DEEP into tacticool, one of my most valued knives because it was bought for me as a gift was the Cold Steel AK-47. This knife is quite a bit larger than the ZT shown but is nearly the same price at ~$125-130 on Amazon. You might be able to find it cheaper on Ebay. Be careful though, there is the regular and mini version!

Ok. So to summarize what you want:

Will be used for

  • light cutting (packages)
  • medium use (camping, I assume food/feathersticking/kindling/whittling)
  • Just in case (not sure if you mean self defense or in case you need it)
  • Emergency Use in car (Seatbelts)

    Some things you also mention

    >when I want to use it, I want it to do the job properly

You listed off a large range of tasks, an I personally feel that for all those things, some of the knives you are looking at might not be necessarily the best.

    My Thoughts

Firstly, I would advise against using any knife as a go-to seatbelt cutter. For safety reasons you don't want to accidentally stab the person whose seatbelt you want to cut. Especially since tanto blade shapes are designed to maximize tip strength for stabbing/penetration. For your emergency needs I feel this or this would be better.

As for camping, a tanto blade is not "ideal" but for the tasks you I assume you'll be doing I think you'll be ok. A blade with a nice belly (the curved part of a blade, like a drop point) has more utility as it will be easier to slice food, and offer you a bit better control. But I mean if you like the tanto shape than by all means =).

If you feel like you're not going to have it on your person everyday, then that Kershaw RJI should be more than sufficient for your needs. Just because Kershaw's price are lower, they definitely do not feel like "cheapies"! Kershaw has great build quality, 8cr13MoV is an OK steel, and will be easy to touch up.

I haven't had any experience with SOG so I can't say much about them, other than that /r/knives is a fan of the SOG Flash. As for ZT, they are wonderful knives. they are a little big to have in the pocket, but the quality and craftmanship is definitely there. For how lightly you will use it, If I were in your shoes, I am not sure if I can justify this as a first buy, unless you have a real appreciation for knives.

    Other Options

  • CRKT M16
  • SOG Flash 2
  • Kershaw Blur
  • Benchmade Griptilian

They are all around the same blade size, and same "look" as your suggested 3. The first 3 are around the same price range as the Kershaw RJI and are community proven knives. The last is around the price range of the ZT 0700, but in my opinion is a better buy. Griptilians are a joy to use.

That's my $0.02, hopefully I didn't overwhelm you too much!

>What stones do you suggest outside of the diamond lansky system? I want to make mirror polished edges if possible. I have a few crappier knives to practice on.

I bought the deluxe kit and later on bought accessories like diamond, curved hones, ect. The diamond certainly is worth it and Lansky's diamond stones are pretty good.

As for what to get (these are cheaper on other sites, but I'm just referring to Lansky's for information sake), I'd suggest:

Ultra Fine/1000 grit/"Yellow". Comes standard in most kits, and is an excellent polishing stone.

"Blue Sapphire"/2000 grit. Sold separate, but worth it. Can put a glistening nearly/ready-for mirror edge on a blade.

Leather strop. Absolute must buy. It's a regular Lansky hone with a good quality piece of leather on it. Apply your preferred compound and strop away. Best way to finish and with the the right compounds can make mirror edges.

Curved hones In case you have any curved knife blades.

Serration/triangle hone For serrations, if you need to sharpen them (there's also a few other grits other than that, too).

Also worth mentioning a stand for Lansky clamps is available (so is a C-clamp variant). In case you get tired of wrist movements, ect. Pretty convenient.

>Also, any advice on compounds for strops

http://stropman.com/ - I buy all 4 (black/course, white/medium, green/fine, red rouge/ultra fine). Great compounds and not that chalky dried out shit you'll find elsewhere (seriously, to hell those compounds where you have to heat it/melt it on). These will apply just by using hand pressure on a strop and rubbing it in quickly like a crayon.

I also use Flitz polishing paste, simply because it's convenient to have (Flitz is damned near magical). Doesn't apply to a hard piece of strop leather (the kind that isn't potmarked and with lots of give) very well. The softer and more rough/natural kind will take to it like a fish in water, however.

I've also used Tormek's honing compound. It, too, is pretty good. As for the grit compared to Flitz, I'd say it's more aggressive but slightly less in finish.

>and oil for bearings/general use

In a pinch, Singer sewing machine oil.

The best lube I've come across, however, is Sentry Solutions' Tuf-Glide. It's absolutely mind-blowing when you first use a lube of that quality and realize how much is lessens friction. Protects decently from moisture as well.

u/eltonnovs Ā· 3 pointsr/knives

If you're spending $100, most well known brands will be sharp and strong. The rest depends on taste and preference. But a few options

  • Benchmade mini griptilian, the axis lock is bomb proof. 154cm (the steel) is pretty good for that price range.

  • Cold Steel mini recon
Triad lock is really tough, CTS-XHP is a great steel. Cold Steel knives always come razor sharp, and are known for being indestructible.

  • Cold Steel rajah III, BD1, bit softer steel but still a good blade.

  • Ontario rat 1, a lot cheaper but hey, why not buy 2? Softer steel, but easy to sharpen. Tough knife on a budget.

  • Kershaw Blur Has assisted opening, decent steel. But your paying more because of the opening mechanism

  • Kershaw scallion. All metal knife, assisted opening. 420HC is pretty tough.

  • Gerber 06 fast Assisted opening. I'm not the biggest fan of 7cr17mov. The knife is strong though.

And most likely every person reading this will have another knife to recommend. It's a lot about personal preference. What look do you like, what lock do you like.

edit; Thanks kind stranger for the gold!

> Can I get some best-in-class suggestions for sub-$100, ~$150, and sub $200? Might get lucky with a sale.

You also said you wanted a good slicer so I'm going with that as my main criteria. Also these are my opinions.

Sub $100: Spyderco Delica 4 Lightweight FRN Or Spyderco Endura 4

$150-ish: Spyderco ParaMilitary2 G-10 In many peoples opinion this is probably the best EDC blade available.

Under $200-ish: Zero Tolerance 0450CF

---------------------------------

Other great knives for EDC:
Ontario RAT II - Only $25. Worth getting for when someone wants to "borrow your knife".

Benchmade 940-2 - $180-ish. Light easy to carry, not much belly to the blade shape so not always the best for slicing.

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 - $50ish depending on the color. Small knife, easy to carry. Unless your EDC tasks involve skinning wild animals, this will work fine.

Cold Steel Code4 $70-ish. Great steel, thin knife so it carries easily, slices well thanks to think factory grind.

u/korgothwashere Ā· 2 pointsr/EDC

A lot of your criteria is pretty subjective. What's your size limit? What climate are you in?

By 'quality' metal I assume you're not a metal snob and are just looking for a metal that will not be terrible at holding an edge and will get sharp as needed. Because of this, I will keep the AUS8 and omit the 8Cr13MoV.

Rust 'proof' might happen, but you'd do better I think with a carbon steel of some kind, which will rust if not taken care of.

All that being said, here are some good suggestions to start you off.

Gotta have rust free? Spyderco Pacific Salt with H-1 steel

Spyderco Endura

Cold Steel Recon 1

Cold Steel American Lawman

Cold Steel Voyager

Kershaw Blur

Benchmade Griptilian

Ontario RAT 1 Folder

CRKT Heiho

All of these knives should be quality options with good steels that can be relatively easily concealed and opened, and fall under your price point. Their 'rust proof'ness will be directly proportional to the amount of care you give to your equipment. I have carried a Spyderco Endura with a VG10 steel blade for years and as long as I wash off the blade every once in a while (like right after you cut something acidic with it), and oil it whenever I get around to feeling like it sometimes (like whenever you start to see patina issues after the 30^th blue moon)...I do not have rust problems. YMMV

u/Maximumsmoochy Ā· 2 pointsr/trailrunning

Hello fellow VI runner,

For what my opinion matters, I pretty much always carry a knife of some kind when Iā€™m trail running. Partially for the occasional bit of trail/woodwork that needs doing but also for the protective factor from cougars, and because I am a knife knerd too. Most of the folks I run with also carry a blade albeit almost all folding. I canā€™t comment much on their exact preferences.

In winter I tend towards fixed blade, either a Mora bushcraft (cheapish ) or a compact machete depending if I know trees and branches are down from storms and the like.

In the summer months, I tend towards larger folding knives like a Spyderco PM2 or GB2. I use folders in the summer because itā€™s brighter and many more folks in the woods so the general risk is down and I donā€™t want to look like a sociopath running around with a sheathed knife when I bump into hikers and mountain bikers.

I appreciate the comment about the realism about taking on a cougar should it come to that. I hope we all stay safe out there while enjoying the trails.

u/ROVaddict Ā· 2 pointsr/Silverbugs

My favorite knife right now is very functional, but not that neat looking.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AU6NHVI/

As a carry knife it is great. Small, holds a great edge, and feels very solid.

My other favorite knife has limited functionality, but it is pretty neat.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003XA3CZE/

It has a ceramic blade. I only use it on shipping boxes and stuff like that since it is easy to chip the blade on harder materials. The thing is stupid sharp.

u/billbillbilly Ā· 2 pointsr/Bushcraft

You gotta be more specific in your original questions buddy.

First of all, there are 2 reasons to remove an animal from a trap. To rescue (and minimize harm to the animal), or to harvest (and minimize damage to the trap). Here in bushcrafter land, I wouldn't usually assume you aren't planning on eating what was caught in the trap.....

It does sound like you are looking for the rescue side of things, and this is for a film, and you are looking for realism..

A swiss army knife or basic folding pocketknife are fairly realistic options for what a typical person might have with them with just a general plan of being 'prepared'. Something like 4-5inch Condor Bushlore is a decent approximation for what a more bushcraft oriented person might have with them in a wilderness setting. Someone who is going out intentionally to rescue animals from traps though, that is an entirely different question! For that you'd want a blunt tip, the type found in rescue knives, and/or EMT scissors.

For realism, most of us here know enough about the various types of knife that we could likely give you good answers - but you really should explain what kind of realism you are actually going for.

Average outdoorsy person with basic 'preparedness' is likely to have something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Huntsman-Leather/dp/B000IOI0NC/

Or this:

https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Spine-Fixed-Blade-Camping/dp/B07DDCG3HD

Average Joe who has no idea of what makes a knife good or useful is likely to have something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Tac-Force-Police-Assisted-Tactical-Rescue/dp/B01LZ0T3N9

Average bushcraft subreddit user probably has something similar to:

https://www.amazon.com/Condor-Tool-Knife-Bushlore-Hardwood/dp/B002CC6BPM

but wishes they had:

https://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-162-Bushcrafter-Drop-Point/dp/B00B0E1MB6

Someone going out with them intention of rescuing persons or animals would probably be carrying something like this though:

https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Rescue-Tool-Pocket-Fluorescent/dp/B000PX0LKG

https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Assist-Orange-Handle-Rescue/dp/B0012G6KI2

https://www.amazon.com/LEATHERMAN-832590-Raptor-Shears/dp/B07N6P2RCB

https://www.amazon.com/DGX-Titanium-Coated-Stainless-Shears/dp/B01B2YF0AM

And then finally, I'll say this - pretty much anything sharper than a butter knife can be used to safely rescue an animal from most situations. Hell I could probably do it with a can opener or nail clippers. So just decide what sort of situation you expect your characters to have intentionally been prepared for, and go from there.

I carry a similar loadout:

Swiss Army One-handed Trekker (Non-serrated) - for use as a blade and tool; I carry on my hip for ease of use. One-handed operation.

Smart pwn - for calls and shit.

Sunglasses - 2nd shift means sideways sunlight.

Average-ass ink stick and notepad - I'm a writer and sometimes my co-workers say some pretty rank stuff worth noting.

Minimag LED Pro+ - Brighter than my old Minimag LED; super bright for the money; I carry on my hip for ease of use.

Timex wristwatch (same model) - I set it to exact time so I'm never early getting to work.

Carabiner - goes on front belt loop for car keys; sometimes I take my housekeys off so it's quicker.

In the car:

Pens galore - just in case I forgot mine.

Car-mounted GPS - using my phone is a hassle; this device can be turned on and charged in my car, and is of quick use.

CB radio - The locals that talk on it are really funny and they help pass the time. I can also flick a switch and talk on a PA speaker under my hood to tell the little children to get out of my way when they're being retards in the street.

_____

Most useful is probably the flashlight.

u/jassack04 Ā· 1 pointr/knives

ZT 0350 is available partially serrated. No belt cutter or glass breaker though.. But it's one of ZT's 'smaller' knives but is still a beast. I don't have any issues EDCing it though. Might chew pockets over time as it has awesome grippy G10 scales.

On the flip side (pardon the pun) - the Spyderco Assist is not spring assisted, but has a glass breaker and a serrated sheepsfoot blade that should work pretty awesome for cutting seatbelts relatively safely. Shouldn't be an issue to open easily at all either due to their signature hole and an extra ridge along the hole for grip.

ZT: http://www.amazon.com/Tolerance-Handle-Speed-Serrated-Blade/dp/B0030F3TRI

u/-Doomer- Ā· 2 pointsr/knifeclub

Of the two you mentioned I would get the Ganzo. I love the Axis lock, its the most fun lock type to play with IMO. I carry a Ganzo G727 quite often and it has been holding up great. Its a good size for a big EDC beater, and the blade does most cutting tasks well. It is a copy of a knife that is very popular for a reason.

The Cryo 1 is a much smaller knife than the Ganzo, they have a larger model 2 that is more similar to the G727. Just be aware of the sizes and what you want to do with your knife. The Cryo is damn good knife I will not fault it for anything other than in my hands it needs a pointer finger choil. That is purely a preference thing though. If you want a sub $20 Kershaw I very much like my Kershaw Freefall. It's lightish, full size, deep carry and has great ergo's. Another option is the Volt SS again with great ergo's and is very thin in the pocket.

If you want a great flipper look for something that runs on ball bearings. CRKT makes some amazing ones for $30~40. The Teigh Tac Two Tanto, Outrage, and Ripple 1 and 2 all fit the bill. The Outrage is a very strong feeling knife, but the tip is very thin, and the other two are not overbuilt but solid so make great EDC knives, but are not the beaters a Rat or Ganzo might be.

u/ColonelBelmont Ā· 3 pointsr/preppers

I'm personally partial to the rounded/smooth blade. I think tanto blades look cool, and they're probably better for stabbing, but I find more use with one continuous longer edge. And the serrated ones also can be useful. If you really need to saw at something, that's useful. But keeping a sharp edge on the smooth blade will cut any cordage or stuff like that just fine. And again, I get a longer, continuous blade. It's all just a matter of preference. I have sawing tools in my BOB, so I don't need another one on my knife. I like my blades like I like my women: Smooth, curvy, and forged from Sandvik 14C28N steel.

This olive drab one is the exact one I carry.

u/ThatOneCrazyFriend Ā· 11 pointsr/motorcycles

(read my edit below)

Don't get just any knife. I would suggest getting a rescue knife.

Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Smith-Wesson-SWBG2TS-Serrated-Seatbelt/dp/B0037F1B9E/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1414195122&sr=8-13

The integrated seatbelt cutter allows you to safely cut a seatbelt. There is also a glass breaking tip that'll shatter glass easily if needed.

In fact, I lost my rescue-knife so I'm buying another.

If you're on a budget, this is the knife I originally had and is < $10. I liked mine and had no issues with it.

I looked into what /u/lt-ghost was saying. While a steel tipped window breaker may work, it requires significantly more work and in a panic situation probably won't work at all. The razer for the seatbelt should work regardless though, but if not you still have the blade.

It seems like the best option for a rescue knife would be Spyderco Assist I. Expensive, I know.

BUT, the ResQme seems to work exceptionally well. I actually just bought a couple of them for myself. Go look on Youtube.

Yeah, the Emerson's are a bit stabby, ok a lot. The Injection is pretty nice looking and a bunch of the reviews I found were quite favorable. Another to consider is the CRKT Swindle, but it's a tad above your price range and people seem to either love it or hate it. If you want people friendly, I can't think of many things better than Opinels. Sometimes people see a G10/TI knife and go "He's gonna slit my throat!" But if it's an Opinel, or any wood/bone handled knife they go "aww furry wabbit or just like my grandad used to carry'

I am not the biggest fan of liner lock knives. I like the one handed functionality, but they are certainly not as sturdy as back lock knives, especially overbuilt locks like cold steel's tri ad lock system. Say what you will about cold steel's dubious advertising or catering towards mall ninjas, the tri ad lock system is very strong. I also enjoy friction knives, such as this svord peasant. http://www.amazon.com/Svord-Peasant-Knives-Knife-Handles/dp/B004HV3A3W However if I have the opportunity to carry a fixed blade I would much rather do so than any folding knife.

Look at the Kershaw Leek, its got a good 3 inch blade, it practically disappears in your pocket, is basically a modern gentlemen's folder, and can get it in several different colors. Its one of the most popular knives out there and is well made. Only thing to watch out for is the tip, its very thin and can break off if you try and use it as a pry bar. You can find the leek for about 40-60 bucks depending on the model.

Link - Kershaw Leek

If you're looking for something heavier duty, the Kershaw Blur or Freefall would be good buys. I use a freefall as one of my EDC knives and think its a great buy for the money. The blur is very well regarded as well, though I don't have experience with one myself.

If you don't absolutely need the spring assist, another idea would be a Spyderco Delica 4, or perhaps a Spyderco Persistence if you want a little cheaper price. Both are solid knives for the money and aren't too bulky in the pocket. You can get the Delica in colors too!

I should have also mentioned that these are not crappy knives. These are American made quality tools it is just that some are better then others. There are people out there that have carried the same $25 knife for 10 years in a row and never had an issue with it.

I just thought to myself... Hmm.. spring assisted knives 50-$75... I stood up to go over to my collection and yelled KERSHAW BLUR! Out loud. A kershaw Blur like this one is perfect for you. There is also a fully black version for about $10 cheaper but it has an inferior steel. This knife has a very fast assisted opener with angled thumb studs and a great lockup. It is made of aluminium with rubber inserts (they feel like the surface of a running track) and the blade would be great for scouts. Carving, cutting rope, cutting food or packages etc. I would strongly suggest this if you are looking for a quality assisted opener.

One that I recently bought was the Leatherman CS, it has the same tools as the little SD victorinox but I like the design and feel a little more. Leatherman has the Skeletool as well if you're interested in something bigger.

On a classier side I really liked my Buck Chairman. It's only knives, no tools but it's a quality product.

Personally I always carry my Victorinox one handed Trekker in my pocket and my SOG Trident in my backpack just for good measure.

Welcome to /r/knifeclub! We're glad you came by.

Check out the Spyderco Assist. I believe it meets all of your requirements (light, big, quality, durable, one handed opening, will cut the crap outta anything you will likely cut) and it's purpose-built for emergency responders. Plus, it looks pretty cool.

The ZTs you mention will be badass knives. Can't go wrong there.

The Blur is a good choice, too.

I don't think the Leek won't hold up near as well as the rest in hard-use situations (but it's a great EDC knife - I like big knives, but I have a Leek). It's blade shape makes breaking/bending the tip more likely than your other choices.

The OTF Lightning is not really what I would suggest for the role you're looking to fill. It can be scary to non-knife folks (hell, the ZT 0350 can be scary to non-knifers) and it's not really up to the task in terms of build and material quality (in my experience).

I like the Spyderco Assist from 3 points of view: utility, quality, and value. It's made to do what needs to be done (blunt tip for clothes, specially shaped blade for rope & hose cutting, serrations for nylon webbing, etc.), it's built with quality materials and processes (FRN, VG-10, Spyderco build quality), and the price is very reasonable for what you're getting.

Get the best knife you can/will afford and you won't be sorry!

Edit: Almost forgot! With the Assist, when you squeeze it (closed, that is) a glass breaker pops out! Neat!

As a knife collector with a whole mess of Benchmades, Spydercos, Case folders, and even a Strider SMF, my favorite go-to is the Victorinox Pioneer. The others all have their place for one occasion or another and I'll carry them when needed, but the main blade on the Pioneer does most of the day-to-day tasks just fine with the added bonus of a couple extra tools and it's not as threatening to onlookers.

It was this demo video that made me decide to acquire one and is the perfect demonstration on why to carry a knife

u/TechTony Ā· 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I pull my trusty, fine-edged pocket knife out and roll it over in my hand a few times. It's blade is less shiny than it was a few months ago, but I love it all the same. I have taken to sharpening it on any rough surface I can find, and it is still serving me well.

"To think, when I got this gift so randomly, I never imagined that I would be using it to ward of blood thirsty zombies." Those suckers have gotten fast in the past few weeks, almost as if they are starting to mutate. Never mind that, for now I need to cut my dinner into manageable chunks. Roasted squirrel always seems to hit the spot these days. "I'm not sure that I would have survived this long without you, old friend."

I clean the blade once more and slide it back into my pocket. I know it will be there for me, like it always has been since I got it in the mail that day in early May.

I'm not sure on laws in the UK but in my experience Kershaw makes some of the best knives under $25 or so to start with. I like the shuffle and shuffle II but they have a pretty love/hate relationship in this sub.

u/Oldms Ā· 3 pointsr/knives

Cheap carbon steel knives I've had my hands on are Glock Field Knife, the Cold Steel GI Tanto, and the Cold Steel Bushman.

The GI Tanto is very heavy and effectively indestructible. My brother in-law describes it as an orc knife. Easy to make a spear out of but not as easy as the bushman. Can be bent 90 degrees laterally and spring back.

The Glock is also indestructable and while not as heavy as the tanto it isnt light either. Very thick spine. Comes with or without a root saw.

The bushman is much lighter and thinner than the other two. Turns into a spear really easily. Can also be bent 90 degrees laterally.

Not saying any of these are the best there is but I have used them all and I couldn't see any of them ever breaking outside of extreme abuse. They're also a fraction of your budget so that's always nice. Don't expect them to be pretty. They're purely utilitarian.

Gerber EDC Zip. Absolutely tiny, but pretty darn useful. Rarely do I need a larger knife. Hard AF to sharpen though, I have to take it apart. http://imgur.com/a/bwGIO

Spyderco Bug (12) Too small. Must be held like a full-size folder, which just doesn't work at this size.

Gerber EDC Zip (7-12) Love it. Thick enough to hold with a pinch grip, and small enough that I don't have to give any consideration to its weight. Sadly I have to take the blade out to sharpen it.

If it's full tang and decent steel, it's probably fine. Better to get some sharpening stones and learn how to put a sharp edge on your knives.

Also, it's good to have a pocket knife as an EDC. I carry a Kershaw Barricade, which has a glass breaker and webbing cutter. It's cheap, the speed assist opening feature is nice and the ability to safely cut seatbelts and break glass are a great feature--especially considering that car wreck are more prevalent than the end of the world. The only I don't like is that the liner lock is a bit flimsy, compared to other locking mechanisms.

In my case it's pure utility. I typically have a Victorinox One-Hand Trekker (a standard swiss army knife with a locking main blade) or Compact (a smaller knife) that I use to eat lunch at work, open boxes, trim my nails when they get too long, occasionally remove a screw, pry off a paint can lid, and loads of other miscellaneous tasks. I find that with multitools and flashlights you start finding the uses for them as soon as they become part of your EDC and you save time by not having to search for the dedicated tool.

Victorinox spear-point blades are great for spreading peanut butter, cutting apples, slicing meat, and lots of other food tasks. Since the knife is all stainless steel it cleans up easily without having to oil the thing each time you use it to prevent rust.

I carry a Columbia River Knife and Tool M16-10KZ 3-Inch Black Folding Knife This is a solid knife, and one of the better, and most durable pocket knives that I've owned. For instance, I was able to punch through the steel in a cheap table-top grill with it, and it didn't really hurt it.

It's definitely a cultural thing, much like living with guns. If you grew up carrying one, then having one around (or on you) is just sort of natural. I also grew up in the south, and I've started to realize recently that Im a total redneck (whether I like it or not).

Fine, progress past early Victorinox or Case knives? Early Bucks or Opinels?

I donā€™t see how at any point I said people have to be rich. Iā€™m literally saying that there are better options for the same price, if not less.

This is a popular Ganzo.

This is a Kershaw that costs less.

So the argument that they buy Ganzos because itā€™s the only option for that price point falls flat. Not only do they not have to spend more, they in fact can spend less for better quality. And if Iā€™m a betting gal, id say that the same people could probably (most likely) squeeze +/- $10 more for another sea of Kershaws that will still be better.

Youā€™re gonna have to show some proof that those companies outsource to said OEM. I know that Kizer and other mid range Chinese companies do it. And even if they do, that doesnā€™t make up for the lack of warranty on the Ganzos and gang. Until they do that, they have no equal footing.

u/PuppiesGoMeow Ā· 1 pointr/EDC

Are you a thumb stud guy or a flipper type of guy?

For cheap multifunctional knife that gets the job done, Iā€™d personally recommend the Kershaw Shuffle as it has a knife and a bottle opener that I suppose you could make a cord cutter from if youā€™re up for the task

For a good budget knife Iā€™d recommend either the CRKT Squid or the CRKT Pilar but these donā€™t have the safety cutters your looking for.

Maybe opt for a buck knife with two blades as they are not threatening looking or a Swiss Army knife

Take look at the offerings from Ruike. They value (quality for the price) of their knives is much higher than any of the American brands like CRKT, Kershaw, or Spyderco. Small, light, cheap, and looks nice. Just wish it had a thumb stud.

u/mtbfreak Ā· 2 pointsr/knives

how about a gentlemans folder, like a crkt swindle or other simalar knives

its a bit more expensive than you were planning on, but they make nice carry knives that most people wont be scared of.

u/jersully Ā· 1 pointr/LifeProTips

I bought my wife a Spyderco Bug and she loves it. Tiny, very sharp. Unfortunately she works for a lawyer and often has to go to the local courthouse. They missed it for the longest time. Truly remarkable, but don't count on it passing security.

u/Lazerr Ā· 1 pointr/knives

How small of a knife would you be willing to purchase?
Any of the Spyderco Bug series would be a good choice. Priced right and come in different sizes.

[Bug](http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Slip-Joint-Plain-Knife/dp/B003788U9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373555986&sr=8-1&
keywords=Spyderco+bug)

Honeybee

Grasshopper

All three deal

For opening boxes (cutting tape) any of those will suffice. If your cutting cardboard, then mostly the Grasshopper will do (although not efficiently)

Also an Opinel looks classy while still being functional. All different sizes to choose from too.

Spyderco Assist I Orange Handle Rescue Knife https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012G6KI2/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_aTFUub0NHND4C

I think this knife would suit an emt quite nicely! (but what do I know) when you use the seat belt /rope cutting feature, a carbide tip protrudes from the bottom.

u/xtremepado Ā· 1 pointr/knives

You're welcome! I should mention that there are other variants of it, including this one with g-10 scales that are more grippy.

If you like the Police, you should also look at the Paramilitary 2. It is probably Spyderco's most famous knife.

u/f1del1us Ā· 1 pointr/knives

So I keep a knife on my belt that gets used like that a lot. I work in a kitchen and my belt knife is my "everything-but-food" knife. Bags, boxes, cans, whatever needs cutting that isn't food. It is a Mora Classic #1. I actually have about a half dozen of the knife floating around, as I've used them as tacklebox knives, glovebox knives, basically anywhere I might need one, I put one. You want the carbon steel version, and you want to take care of it. Forcing a patina with vinegar is a great way to do that.

The second part would be picking up an aftermarket sheath. I was able to get a custom leather one from France for ~$30 on Etsy, and it makes carrying the knife a dream. The stock sheather is a plastic piece of crap; totally unbecoming of the amazingly sharp blade the knife has. Something like this is what I got, but from a different seller so I can't speak directly to this maker.

u/cmdertx Ā· 2 pointsr/news

Where he's from, /u/Yup1Yup1Yup is afraid of a knife with a locking blade. Something like this, that I carry every day jut for whatever stupid reason may pop up. It's a 3" blade, and the lock is a safety feature so it doesn't close on my hand and hurt me. The locking feature is what makes it illegal there. That's how much they trust their people, but this person wants to talk about trusting youth to make the right decisions. Fucking hilarity.

Their only defense for being so terrified of it is "BUT WHY DO YOU NEED THAT?"

u/suihcta Ā· 1 pointr/EDC

In rough order, starting from the upper left corner:

u/seanomenon Ā· 5 pointsr/camping

Swiss Army Camper II for a classic camping knife.

Swiss Army One-handed Trekker for a bigger knife with locking blade (Also available with a serrated main blade) This might be good if he's a "knife guy".

Swiss Army Recruit for just the necessities,

Swiss Army Bantam if he's a minimalist. (I understand the can opener isn't quite as good as the the one on the recruit, though.)

Edit: Because they are drinkers, you might also like the Swiss Army Waiter, which is the Bantam with a corkscrew.

u/heyguesswhatfuckyou Ā· 3 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

I've had a lot of success with Tuf-Glide, but even something like a simple mineral oil will do in a pinch.

u/juaquin Ā· 0 pointsr/camping

Personally, I'd rather get a Mora and then bring a pair of pliers/screwdriver/etc if you really need them. The actual tools will be more useful than their downsized multi-tool counterparts, and cheaper.

Of course, if weight/size is a concern or you just think multitools are cool, go for it.

u/TheDood_Abides Ā· 1 pointr/EDC

CRKT M16 10 I love this knife. I've had it for a few years now and It's one of my favorites. I like tanto points but you can get this model with a bunch of blade variants.

u/BadHumanGoodGnome Ā· 1 pointr/EDC

Squirt PS4 paired with a Victorinox Trekker puts a pretty solid set of tools in your pocket.

u/knifeyguns Ā· 1 pointr/knives

For that price range I would look at something along the lines of a Cryo 2 (http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-1556BW-Folding-Blackwash-SpeedSafe/dp/B00I04OHQ6)

The black wash finish may be unique enough for you (I like the finish because it hides scratches well)

I have it and it's not as nice as my Benchmades or ZT but I can absolutely beat on this knife and it just takes it. At the price point of $32 you could spend the remaining $18 (staying under $50) on a torx set if you want to be able to disassemble and clean your knife.

u/Jerome_Felcher Ā· 1 pointr/parametrek

Thank you!

Watch, pocket knife, handkerchief.

The watch is obvious and it makes you look like less of a heathen pulling out your mobile phone all the time. The pocket knife is a wonderful tool that will help you open random things, pick your teeth clean, cut an apple, just about anything. The handkerchief is to wipe your sweaty brow after struggling with whatever you used the knife for, most often something similar to this.

May I suggest an Opinel No. 6 or Svord Peasant?.

EDIT: A Zippo or matches are always good too, but not nearly as necessary. I prefer the latter because I smoke a pipe.

u/400HPMustang Ā· 4 pointsr/EDC

Discreet and light weight are also subjective. Do you carry a bag on you every day? or are you wearing cargo pants every day? or does all this have to get stuffed in the pockets of your jeans?

A lot of these things are completely personal choices and as such you might take a step back and evaluate what you have and consider what you find wrong with your current choices.

You might start with an Altoids tin FAK or Altoids tin survival kit

Knives...small, inexpensive, discreet, unassuming. A few come to mind

CRKT Squid

Keshaw Shuffle

Wallet. What's wrong with the one you have now? or do you just want a fancy new one? All my life my leather bi-fold wallets have served me well. Only had two in over 20 years.

Flashlights are good. You can go knock off or Streamlight.

Pens. People recommend Fisher Space Pens such as the one I linked. They're quality pens, durable, stylish and refillable. I personally carry grey Bic disposables because people steal them or I lose them.

Multi-tool...I suggest Leatherman. Again it's subjective based on the tools that you need. Take a look at the Leatherman website. They have a good tool selector based on size and number of tools you want/need. My Skeletool CX has always served me well.

A way to carry keys? What's wrong with how you carry them now? If you're stuffing them in your pocket traditional key rings are still fine. Carrying them of body? on a bag? Then some sort of carabiner works, like the Keybiner or some variation. Don't want something rattling around? The Key-bar is nice if you don't have giant keys.

u/Wolf_Salad Ā· 1 pointr/knives

Victorinox One Hand Trekker has forward serrations so it won't dull itself on ceramic plates. It's also just an all-around kick butt knife.

u/hankhill78 Ā· 2 pointsr/BudgetBlades

u/AceofSpad3s Ā· 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

You really should get something at least with a full ish tang. The combination of a dull knife and a fake tang will end with lacerations. I would suggest a [mora #1] (http://www.amazon.com/Morakniv-Classic-Handle-Utility-3-9-Inch/dp/B00449YYM8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1397841118&sr=8-10&keywords=mora). They are generally for camping but I have used mine in the kitchen and the work great. And if you cannot sharpen one of these then you must literally not have any hands.

I've personally had very good experiences with a Victorinox as EDC. It's not as sexy as the other knives listed here, but it is small enough to always have in your pocket. Plus, it holds an edge well. I use this one ($30), but you can go even cheaper.

United Cutlery isn't really known for reliability or quality control, and I'm seeing that hollow handle as a major failure point. The AUS 6 steel isn't amazing either. I think you'd be much better suited with the Cold Steel above, which is the same price as the SoA on amazon.
