I got my Helix sub installed close to 2 months ago, here's where I got everything (tax and shipping excluded):

  • Helix Sub, Rick Case VW, $479.20 (link). There was an additional mail-in 15% rebate going on through Q1 on VW rebates, but now it's 10% on Q2. Haven't received that additional mail-in yet, it's up to 90 days for it to come in. You need to buy from a VW dealer to qualify, but I think it puts you generally ahead compared to ECS, ShopDAP, etc.
  • Long screw and short screw from VW parts vortex, $10.96 total. You don't really need the additional short screw, you just need the long one. I ended up using both nuts (plus having the extra spare that you already have on your car) to hold the spare tire and sub each, but you really just need the one on top of it all.
  • Radio removal key, $7.49. Not a bad deal, you need them.
  • Audio terminal removal keys, $7.95. Don't cheap out, you want to have a set of these. They make the involved step super easy.
  • Helix programmer, Golf MK7 forum, $100 deposit, $10 rental. The guy handling that thread is super on top of it, just get on the list. It's worth it, helps clean up the sound, specially on mid to high volume. My sub came pre-programmed for a Jetta as indicated by the tool, there was a noticeable difference.
  • Wiring harness jumper 000-051-727-B, got it from ShopDAP for ~$20). You don't need this jumper AT ALL, buuuuut it does enable you to take the sub out and use the stock system by just plugging at the end of the harness going to the sub. Awesome if you ever need the trunk space, I just keep it in my tools bag in the car. Doubt I'll use it more than once or twice, but it's there!
  • Some bone / plastic tools make the panel removal process easier, your choice on these.

That was my best attempt at saving money when I did it. The sites that claim $300 or so where when they cleared inventory of the previous revision and then released B. Couldn't find a better combination of discounts and rebates.

These 4 videos were all I needed to install it, there's overlap between them. Video 1, video 2, video 3, video 4.

I had a MK7 with the Fender system but totaled it, replaced with a MK7.5 without Fender (SE). Helix is better (a little more powerful), so nothing to envy on Fender, although Fender has the advantages of not having to deal with any of the installation and retaining the lower floor with a spare.

For the head unit I used a Pioneer 4200nex (this head unit is pretty much the same as the 8200nex(which is the top of the line head unit) but without the navigation. There really isn't a need for that feature since this head unit supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play, they both use their own maps)

For the dash kit I used the ADS MUS1 Radio Installation Kit (if you decide to go with this kit, the wire harness is already included inside the box)

Then I used the iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR module so they would all communicate with each other, that also took care of the A/C, steering wheel controls and will also connect to the ODB2.

I did not install this myself, but the installer told me that it wasn't too difficult, and it was his first time installing this kit/radio into a mustang.

I love it!!! It was worth the all the money I spent!

edit: if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask :)

u/firebirdude · 2 pointsr/CarAudioVideo

Sooo few things. First, Amazon is not an authorized Pioneer dealer. So if you have an issue past Amazon's return policy, you will have no warranty. Second, the one I linked you to has a CD/DVD player. The one you linked to does not, but has the option for a couple bucks more. Third, and most importantly, you forgot the harness I linked you to. The RP4-CH11. This adapts aftermarket head units to your Liberty. That particular harness also retains steering wheel controls, so the ASWC is not needed if you're using the RP4. Forth, you forgot the other two parts you'll need which is a dash kit and antenna adapter. I didn't mention them because I assumed you'd order through Crutchfield or Sonic and they include them at no cost. Amazon does not. Fifth, the microbypass is mainly for watching video while driving. However, there are some select features that only become available when the vehicle is parked. Usually pairing new bluetooth devices and the like. Really nothing you'd need routinely. Up to you, but I wouldn't recommend it for a 16yr old.

You can buy the camera from anywhere you want. But I'd strongly recommend buying the head unit and parts from Crutchfield or SonicElectronix. The deal I linked you to is a solid price (only like $15 more than Amazon), you'll get full factory warranty, AND it includes some parts you'll need for the install at no charge. Again, ask for the RP4-CH11. Don't let them sell you on the Axxess CH harness and ASWC combo bullshit. Inferior products that are only like $10 cheaper. I install for a living. Trust me. They will discount the RP4-CH11 harness when you buy the head unit. If it's still more than Amazon has it for then let them give you the dash kit and antenna adapter for free and buy the RP4 harness from Amazon too.

Altogether, you're looking at maybe ~$370+ backup cam and sales tax from SonicElectronix. FWIW, I've been buying from Sonic for probably sheesh...over 10 years easy. Solid site. Call them and order over the phone if you'd like. Up to you. :-)

u/tortoise257 · 41 pointsr/GoForGold

First, you’re going to have to get a metra dash kit. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Metra-Installation-Chevrolet-Equinox-Vehicles/dp/B005G0AYYG

And you will need an aftermarket Double-DIN radio head unit. There are many options out there for that but you will need a head unit that supports Apple Car Play.

One good head unit I would recommend the Pioneer AVH-1300NEX: https://www.amazon.com/AVH-1300NEX-Multimedia-Receiver-Bluetooth-SiriusXM-Ready/dp/B073BNFTV7/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=apple+carplay&qid=1573091130&s=electronics&sr=1-3

There are many more head units out there which support car play, so I recommend choosing one which you think is best. However keep in mind that you will need BOTH the dash kit AND head unit.

u/GohnGalt · 1 pointr/Audi

/u/VeryCleverMoose okay, so this is the aux/30-pin cord that I bought and this is the adapter you need to go with it. There are dozens of things on amazon that are virtually the same, you just have to look through the reviews and questions and usually people say what it fits. Also, you will need a set of radio removal keys, I paid a few extra for ones that don't bend so easily here.
Tutorial:

    1. Put a nice and thick towel over your center console. Sit in the passenger seat.
    1. Insert a removal key into each slot with the angled part facing outwards until they click. Don't push until you bottom out. This isn't Brazzers.
    1. With all 4 keys in, use a friend's help or use your thumb and pinky to grab a top and bottom key with each hand so the force is spread evenly between all four keys. Once the radio is loose, pull it out a bit and then - I needed a small flatblade screwdriver to help - depress the catch on the back of the radio to free each key.
    1. Gently pull the radio completely forward and let it rest on the towel.
    1. See the big 20 or whatever pin plug on the bottom right of the back of the radio (if you are looking directly at the back of the radio)? Unplug it, and plug it into the orange adapter.
    1. Get a small zip tie and jumble up the 30-pin cord on the aux jack dongle. You don't want to nicely coil it however as this can create radio noise.
    1. Unscrew a suitable screw on any clean metal on the back of the radio- may want to use a magnetic tipped screwdriver so you don't drop it. Put the grounding wire over the hole and screw the screw back in - make sure it's tight as you want a good connection.
    1. Take the weird plug from the 30-pin/aux dongle (which is in our case blue) and slide it onto the adapter plug (green in this case)
    1. Plug that assembled connector into the spot where you originally removed the 20-pin plug, it should click IIRC.
    1. Put the 30-pin/aux dongle in the back of the radio cavity, and feed the aux jack right across the center of the opening. Open your little tray/drawer. There should be a slot that goes into it, and you can slip the aux jack through. Feed what you can through the opening, don't worry about coiling it into the drawer yet.
    1. While keeping the aux cord taught and flat in the opening, slide the radio back into the hole. The aux cord should be down in the recessed channel in the center and the radio should slide right in over top of it.
    1. You're done. Just be careful coiling up the cord so you don't jam the drawer up, and you will have to slam it a little bit so that it stays shut. Press the CD button when you want to use the aux jack as the input. It works perfectly, and only a tiny bit of static/noise from the engine when using the aux jack, and only if you're playing something dead quiet.

Been down this road with my 2003 and my brother's 1999, except I was using a double din. These instructions are for 2003-2008, but it should be mostly applicable http://www.crutchfield.com/S-eEXBIY6dQX4/learn/2003-2008-subaru-forester.html

While you can splice the wiring, I'd recommend getting a wiring harness made for your vehicle instead. According to Crutchfield, this is the one you'd need
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120708901/Metra-70-8901-Receiver-Wiring-Harness.html?tp=2977

Makes things a hell of a lot easier. That way, you can sit inside and splice the new stereo to the harness, then just plug it in directly when you have the dash turn apart.

Since you're going from double din to single din, you'll probably want a dash kit as well. Crutchfield also sells those. If you don't want to buy from them, I'm sure you can find similar products at Amazon.

As far as tools go, you'll need need a prying tool for the dash, and a crimping tool and wire stripper for making the connections. I picked up this set of specialized tools, which made the job pretty easy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AO4NJ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_V1dyyb7ZP072W

I prefer nylon crimp caps for keeping those splices in place.

Sorry if the formatting is crap, since I wrote this on my phone, but if be happy to help with any questions you have.

u/Bassblaster505 · 1 pointr/carmodification

EASY! you can do the install yourself ALL those Chrysler RES NON boston radios are nothing special. i done a FULL system in my 2012 200 (dual amps, new speakers, head unit and subwoofer). Right so head over to amazon or crutchfeild.

for a new radio you'll need a idatalink RR module and CH-1 plug and play harness to retain your steering wheel buttons.

for your dash kit to fit a new radio you have 2 options. SINGLE DIN: Best Kits BKCDK644 DOUBLE DIN: Best Kits BKCDK642 Since you want a touch screen you need the double din kit

SPEAKERS: Doors and rear deck are 6x9s and dash are 3.5's. for the doors NO ADAPTERS ARE NEEDED and MOST 3.5's for the dash wont need mounting adapters either. But check on crutchfied for fit as the real nice chunky woofers dont fit. But Rockford Fosgate PUNCH, Infinity reference, Kenwood Excelon and Focal Integration will drop right in if you just cut the plastic "cup" the original speakers sit in.

you do have to pop the door panels off to get to the speakers and the dash speakers you have to take the A-pillar trim pieces off. rear deck the rear seat needs folded down and more C-pillar plastic trim popped off. theres better guides online then i can describe on a text post.

the best buy free installation probably doesnt include the smart harness required to swap out the factory radio

u/blkandblu · 1 pointr/Volkswagen

Alpine used to have a nice and cheap single DIN receiver, but it looks like they are all $200+ now.

I like this Pioneer which meets your requirements and is affordable. I would also suggest getting the PAC VW adapter for the best compatibility and to keep stock functionality like auto dimming lights and door chimes. You may also need an antenna adapter and single DIN cubby kit (but the one you already have will likely work fine).

u/fulgurex · 1 pointr/CarAV

you will need this kit
https://www.amazon.com/Metra-95-7521B-Double-Installation-2012-Up/dp/B00AGOFJZQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480360880&sr=8-1&keywords=95-7521

this harness

this antenna adapter if you still listen to FM

as for radios with navigation built in. they start around $550 and some will have the ability to do apple carplay or android auto. as for satellite radio, most do not come with it BUT they have the ability to have it added easily. usually a $35 to $50 tuner which can be connected to most aftermarket stereos. then you just transfer account to new sirius tuner ID and you are good to go.

I would suggest following the linked guide with a few changes / notes below : https://www.fiat500owners.com/threads/how-to-2012-fiat-500-double-din-radio-install.7412/

  1. The double din dash adapter seems a bit iffy from the Amazon reviews, YMMV: https://www.amazon.com/Scosche-FT4276B-Double-Select-Vehicles/dp/B00RL9L9F8/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=FT4276B&qid=1573525758&sr=8-1
  2. Antenna Adapter on Amazon for ~10 bucks: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DWLTP6R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  3. For the headunit I'm assuming you'd want bluetooth and Android Auto / Apple Carplay? I would highly suggest the Kenwood DMX706S : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SMBMQ5Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  4. To use the head unit after install without actually splicing your parking brake and other cables, get the Kenwood bypass cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FY8P9QC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  5. To tie all this together, you'll need the wiring harness. I suggest idatamaestro:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E4W1644/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012F8RC1Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You will make an account and flash the firmware to the appropriate car make/year and head unit model.

I've only installed a basic 1 DIN stereo on my old 2013 500. I suggested the above head unit and wiring harness because I've installed that on my 2017 500 and had great results. Best of luck.
u/blueyond · 1 pointr/350z

I got it from Amazon: SCOSCHE NN1456B 2006-Up Nissan 350z Double DIN or DIN w/pocket Install Dash Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NWEJVQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_eTeZAbE7B3PXQ

It’s a perfect fit and was super easy to install.

This might be an elaborate way of answering your first question, but mostly I wanted to write out my experience of doing this exact thing. Also apparently I need to split this up into 2 replies.

I have an AVH-W4400NEX and a 2012 Prius Plug-In. After buying all the stuff I needed...

u/EvilTerabite · 2 pointsr/Acura_RSX

Hey! If you have a cassette player, you're gonna need an adapter which can be found here if not you dont need this! Make sure the measurements of the radio match up, it should fit most single/double din radios.

After that make sure to buy a wiring harness

And then get your radio!

Also this would help a bunch, be sure you have a 8mm socket ready.

I had the same issue and I ended up going for an aftermarket deck and I'm glad I did. I installed it for the aux in, but I ended up not even using it. Instead it automatically pairs with my phone when I turn the car on and there's a mic that you put on the steering column for hands free calling.

I installed an older version of this deck with this dash kit. I also use a magnetic dash mount and it makes for a really clean wireless setup.

Here's a video of it installed. You can change the colours to match the vehicle though.

u/CrucifiedOne · 3 pointsr/Cadillac

This is a known issue with the Cadillac CUE screens. The screen eventually becomes delaminated and no longer responds to touch.
If your car is still under warranty take it in and they should repair it for you. Trust me, they'll know exactly what has happened.

If you are no longer under warranty then it's a pretty straightforward repair that you can do yourself if you're handy and have minimal tools.

Highly recommend buying the replacement from CUESCREENS either through their website or off Amazon.

I have two FJs, both with upgraded audio. The Kenwood Excelon DNX695S is my favorite head unit of the two, the other is a Kenwood Excelon DNX892. The DNX659S is quite a bit cheaper, has a great layout, no mechanical door hiding the CD/DVD player, and still has the OBDII connection to monitor engine stuff, which is cool. also two inputs for front and rear cameras.

Keep in mind you will need a few additional components to fully integrate, they aren't 100% needed, but make it better: Maestro ADS-MRR to use your steering wheel controls, SiriusXM SXV300v1 if you want Satellite Radio, and a plastic trim piece to complete the bezel around the new radio.

I have a Wicked CAS Stage 2 speaker and subwoofer system in one, and stock speakers in the other. Both sound great with the new head units, but the Wicked system with the dual subwoofers is really nice. I don't have a sub in the second FJ, and miss it after driving the first.

You can get a chinese radio for $30 but if you plan to keep using your car for some time it would be better to go up one notch and put something like the Pioneer FH-X720BT, i know CDs are in extinction but for a little price difference you still have the option.
You need to get the mounting kit, and the wiring harness. Installing it is not that hard, if you can splice some wires you're set, the wires in the radio harness and in the adapter are color coded so you just need to match them.

u/localhostrulez · 2 pointsr/subaruoutback

Oh goodie, so that's basically the easiest possible combination. (I was asking about steering wheel controls and subwoofers because you'd need even more adapters for those. And auto climate control makes the din kit a pain in the ass, you gotta import it from Japan. But yours looks like a base model without any of that.)

So you're going to need:

u/a_drive · 1 pointr/Charlotte

You should post a picture of radio you have in there. I believe the 2002 Passat needs special tools to remove. Also, I believe you have a 2 DIN stock unit, and your new head unit is 1 DIN, which means it will need an installation sleeve. A picture would answer both of those questions, also, I would be happy to help once we make sure you have the stuff you need.

u/magic8ball88 · 2 pointsr/CarAV

Its pretty easy to do yourself. I have a 2003 yukon xl and I did the installation myself. Yours should be the same as mine, I assume you have onstar and bose as well. If I were you I would get this headunit and this adapter. It looks difficult, but its really quite easy to install. It also keeps all your factory steering wheel controls and onstar. A little spendy, but there is nothing cooler than changing the song on Spotify with the steering wheel controls on your ten year old vehicle.

u/95688it · 1 pointr/subaruimpreza

it's complicated, i did it when i first bought my 16'.

and don't let just any audio installer do it, they'll just hack the shit out of the harness.

you need about $200 in parts besides the headunit to do it properly

shit and it looks like the link to the blog on how to do it is gone :(

http://roflitsowens.blogspot.com/2015/12/2016-subaru-wrx-replacing-starlink-head.html

basically you need:

dash install kit

wire to keep OEM backup camera

30pin adapter you'll cut it in half and use it for hooking all these various things together

Maestro to retain steering wheel control, there's a cheaper version though with less features

adapter to retain USB

adapter for stock antenna

adapter for radio so you don't have to cut anything

and i'm pretty sure i'm forgetting something else.

most of these things all have to be wired into the 30 pin connector, it was much easier to figure it all out on my workbench and solder it properly then install everything, took me about 2 days to do.

u/spinnyd · 1 pointr/Toyota

I have been looking at a Kenwood unit myself, along with a Maestro adapter I can still use all the steering wheel controls and gain the ability to reset cel codes and monitor tire pressure. Apple CarPlay is just a bonus.

The cheapest thing on my list are some metal things to be able to replace the radio in my Saab.

I could use some pants or maybe an AD shirt.

Hope you first contest goes swell! Thanks!

u/In_Dying_Arms · 1 pointr/CarAV

I mean if you can find a Pontiac dealership then maybe. Otherwise most audio shops don't bother repairing factory radios, unless you find someone that specializes in it. It's like trying to repair a car that was in a heavy front end collision, you just write it off and declare it totalled not attempt to repair it. I've had customers come and say a dealership wanted $1k+ to repair their radio whereas a brand new aftermarket deck installed, with more features, only came out to <$300.

But yeah, see if a friend knows radios or go to your local shop and get an estimate. Here's the parts for your own research:

Dash kit, 99-2003

Antenna adaptor, 40-GM10

Harness, PAC RP5-GM11

u/Tec_ · 1 pointr/CarAV

While I totally agree the down side is that OPs vehicle requires a wire harnes that cost almost $100. The nice side is that it does everything.

For some one who's just looking for aux input the pac/isimple style units can work for less.

u/Robot_Ross · 1 pointr/AndroidAuto

You can also get this: Amazon

This allows you to hook the steering wheel controls up, as well as allowing deeper integration to the car from the head unit through the CAN bus. I know a lot of the Kenwood Android Auto units have really good integration with this stuff.

Do you think that this harness would solve my ignition switch and amp problem?

I really don’t want to have to hardwire an ignition switch so i guess I’ll go a little more expensive and see what happens

I did have the remote wire hooked up and I’m like 99% sure the rca’s were in the right place. As for enabling it in the menu, i didn’t know i had to do that so i will try that out when i get home.

When you asked if it works with the factory’s radio I’m not sure what you mean. Could you elaborate?

I am installing a pioneer double din in my 2003 jetta with monsoon audio (steering wheel controls) on wednesday and I am going to use this which will allow me to use the monsoon amp with the pioneer deck and keep steering wheel controls.

Edit: I used to have the non-bluetooth version of the stereo you linked to and I would recommend it.

I got one of these Grom Audio units for my 2007.5 A4. It plugs in to the external CD changer port of the stock head unit. I didn't have an external CD changer, so no big deal for me. I'd you do have one you'll have to decide if it's worth losing it, or if you want to go with something else.

As for the unit itself, it mimics a CD and doesn't provide track or artist info on the display, but it does work with the steering wheel controls.

Installation is very easy. Order yourself a set of these stereo keys and you can have the unit installed in 15 minutes. No tools required.

The bypass harness was for behind the stereo. Almost an "adapter" so to speak as well as a bypass. This is what I bought and what is now attached behind the stereo to the corresponding wires:

Alright I found it much cheaper on Amazon. To me this looks like a complete jumble of wires. There's only three plugs from the Audi and one on the Kenwood, so what's going on here?

Remember 10?-14 radios are for the most part identical. With almost any new vehicle the temp controls are mixed in with the stereo.

Your going to need everything you would normally need for a stereo install. Wire harness, Antenna adaptor, ect.

If you have sync and want to continue to use the wheel controls, ect you will need this.

You may want to look into this converter and do some research.

That chime may not be coming from the stereo itself, there are adapters for the stereo that add this functionality. I recently installed an ilx-107 in my car and left out the chime module from the adapter as it was obnoxiously loud.

Adapter like this.

Turns out I had to get a steering wheel control interface unit to plug in from my factory controls in to the aftermarket radio itself. Had to deal with my vehicle operating a can bus system it made it a giant pain in the butt.
