(Part 3) Reddit mentions: The best clothing, shoes & jewelry

Hi r/watches! Most of the women who have written to this sub for engagement watch advice either have very different budgets or SOs with very different styles than mine, so I was wondering if I could ask for your guidance/approval! I sort of doubt whether I have the guts to propose myself, but regardless the idea is to have the perfect watch on hand when the time comes (he's told me just to ask) -- plus, I'm going to see his best friend and also his brother over the course of the next month, so I'd like to have a solid idea of what I'm aiming for to run it by them!

Here's the breakdown: I have told him to absolutely never spend more than 3K, but for a really lovely watch, I'd be open to stretching a little beyond that (I have ~2.5 saved now). He's in tech (well, we're grad students for now, but eventually) so definitely a desk job type. He dresses fairly nicely for his field-- on a normal day, he wears a causal collared shirt with jeans or khakis-- and is about 6'2" with a slender but not super-skinny build, probably about 175 or 180 lbs (1.9 m/80 kg). Lower-maintenance watches would probably be better suited to him, like ideally no date, because I lack confidence that it won't just trick him into thinking there are 31sts in months where they don't belong. However, I want this to actually be a nice gift that will last and potentially eventually go to one of the many children we plan to have, and I'm sure he will bring it in to have it maintained.

I am strongly inclined to go with a leather band over a bracelet. I think that Nomos' watches looks very sleek and sophisticated (and he likes colorful watch hands), and the Tagente seems to be a favorite on here for weddings and engagements. Personally, I think that some of the TAG Heuer Carrera 1964 Chronographs are beyond stunning, but I'm not sure I have the know-how to handle a grey market purchase. Is there anything else that might be worth considering in this price range/based on the styles he likes? Would you be OK with getting a simple, sleek watch like a Nomos Tangente Gangreserve or Tangomat as an engagement present? (I know most girls seem to want something glittery, but I'm much more on the simple side of things -- is that OK in the watch world?) Is there a reasonable place to look for one of those beautiful Carerras (or my understanding is that a Chronograph might not even be appropriate for this type of occasion?)

I really appreciate the resources you've put together here because I've already learned so much. Thank you for any thoughts or guidance you have -- I am kind of in shock that I'm doing this but also really excited!

i think either are fine watches, and perfectly worthy gifts, but in my honest opinion neither strike me as "last forever family heirloom" material. The Citizen is not what I would call a timeless design and is likely to look dated at some point. The Shinola is a little more classic but... it's a cheap quartz movement in a well-designed but somewhat cheaply made case. And while there's absolutely no shame in wearing or enjoying either of these watches, neither seems like the kind of thing that will be treasured for generations either.

In the end, though, the best gifts are the ones given with thought and consideration for what the recipient might like. You love your husband, and I bet you know what he'd like. Follow your heart, engrave something thoughtful on it, and I'm sure he'll love it.

For my tastes, in this price range, if you want something stylish I'd look at a visodate, or if you want something a little plainer, try something military-inspired like this junkers or Hamilton field watch. For something a little dressier, also consider a SARB033. Also, I believe all of those watches are available in either black or white if that's a preference.

The designs of those watches are all much more classic and likely to age a bit more gracefully.

Oh man, I love when people ask stuff like this on Reddit. I bootblack, and have worked on countless leather boots! Frye boots are lovely.

First off, what kind finish do your Melissa Buttons have, or did they have when you got them? For instance, looking at the current line, Antiqued/Polished can take polish, Rugged should not be polished, and Suede will have an entirely different cleaning/care routine from the other two. I'll assume it's closer to the first two for the following.

For any leather that's not suede or nubuck, the first step is cleaning. You can pick up some saddle soap (Kiwi exists in your local drug store or grocery store and is totally fine) or use just about any mild soap - I regularly use diluted Dr. Bronners. You want to create a lather and scrub that into the leather, and then wipe the boot down with a damp, not wet, rag. Be sure to get all the suds off the boot, but don't soak it either. If it's really dirty, feel free to repeat this step!

Then, I would choose a conditioner. I'd actually stay away from an animal-based oil like neatsfoot oil or mink oil, as well as less-stable oils like olive oil, since those could go rancid with too much humidity. I'm a big fan of Obenauf's, which gives good deep conditioning with just a bit of product (seriously, a little goes a long way) and has a pretty neutral scent. Frye actually sells a conditioning cream of their own, which I imagine would also be fine. Pretty much anything with a beeswax base is also good. Apply with your fingers so you can really rub it into the leather - the heat from your hands will help work it in.

Finally, if your boot is the sort that would look better with some shine, I would wait a day or two to let the conditioner soak in and then apply a bit of cream polish - this will give your boots some shine, but it won't be like, patent-leather mirror shiny, which I feel would be the wrong style for Frye boots. Kiwi also sells these, but Meltonian is my go-to. With cream polish, you apply a light coat and then buff the boot with a shoe brush in light, fast strokes. You can use your fingers to apply the polish, but it'll dye your fingertips, so either wear gloves or use a rag or a polish brush. Buff the boot until it's shiny to your liking!

Don't worry too much, it's pretty hard to ruin a good pair of boots while taking care of them. They'll definitely be happier with a bit of TLC!

At minimum, I would suggest four things: Horsehair brush (as mentioned below), a conditioner, a dauber (to apply the shining agent), and a shining agent (if you want them to shine/polish).

My recommendations on products that I've personally used (which I've used a number of things, but found these to be had at a good price/quality ratio):

1. Kiwi Horsehair brush. I have two of these, one for work and one for home. Love them both.
   
   
2. Lexol leather conditioner. Amazing stuff, I use it on belts, wallets, car seats, and definitely boots and shoes. I bought a liter, but I'm guessing the 8oz bottle will last several years. Strong recommendation for this product.
   
   
3. FootFitter dauber. I didn't use a dauber for a long time but in my opinion, it's much easier to get a consistent coating with a dauber vs an old shirt. Definitely optional on this one.
   
   
4. Saphir neutral wax. Saphir is a company highly touted on /r/GoodyearWelt and many other shoe forums/communities. I have never come across a straight out bad review of anything they make, but have only used their waxes. Much bigger fan of their wax over Kiwi and other generic waxes. It smells great, shines great, and is quite forgiving. I suggest Neutral for all colors except black, in which case I recommend black. Strong recommendation.

do you know when the watch was serviced last? it might need a servicing (which can be quite expensive) before you want to wind it too much.

you wind the crown clockwise (away from you) and its all done by feel. it'll wind freely for quite a few turns, then you will start to feel it get tighter and tighter. when I had a hand winder, I would wind it very gently, using a soft grip of the crown, and eventually I'd "hit a wall" and my fingers would slip off the crown. this is fully wound. it took me like 40 winds to get there. so, now that I knew how many winds it took, I wanted to find out the power reserve. once I knew that, I could fairly accurately predict when I'd "hit the wall" again....I would just stop winding like 5 turns before that and I'd be good.

whatever you do, NEVER give it a wind if you feel resistance. it should be fairly smooth all the way until it's fully wound.

as for the glass, it might by acrylic (plastic) in which case a tube of Polywatch should take out most scratches. you say it's damaged, but unless its chipped or cracked, you still have hope of restoring it for cheap.

I'm no expert on vintage Timex's, but it looks like a Marlin. but then again, all vintage hand winders look like a Marlin to me :)

it looks like it's on a Rally strap (big holes in it) which doesn't fit the watch IMO. I'd throw it on a Croco leather, or just a regular smooth leather strap. I've been happy with clockwork synergy leather straps. the dapper and gentleman collection are great, but the leather is quite thick.....might look weird with the svelt lugs that watch has. but their croco leather is nice from what I've heard and should fit much nicer. you can use code CWSSMR for 10% off too.

Like all new collectors, my real grail is proper in-house movement (just saw this in another post [A. Once you get interested in movements and the passion of horology it's hard to respect these fashion brands. That said, all new brands have to start somewhere.

  Can't wait to add some more automatic and mechanical movements to my collection. I need to add some watches from brands with great provenance and heritage, but I'm new to this and working with tight budgets. One thing I can say is that I won't ever buy a Gucci or Armani watch or any fashion brand.
  
  When looking at brands without watchmaking provenance, Montblanc is a great example of how to do it right. They're relatively new to watchmaking but they're doing it with passion and care. As I say, every new watchmaking brand has to start somewhere - like every new collector - the key is passion.

So, both of the watches you linked are described as "fashion brand" watches. This means that a popular clothing company has taken a pre-existing quartz movement (usually) then put it into a casing of their choosing and branded it. These watches generally won't break, but they are usually poorer quality than watches made by genuine watch brands at approximately the same price point.

Timex is a good starting point for watches. They look good, hold up well, and generally have very few issues. They're also fairly inexpensive. They typically use quartz movements. Quartz movements use circuit boards and batteries to operate the watch. They're accurate, but the cheapest method for creating a watch.

The second primary method for a operating a watch is automatic movements. These can either be hand-wound by the dial on the side of the watch, or they use a small weight in the watch to automatically (see: name) wind the watch as you move. As your arm moves, the weight spins around and winds up the watch. Automatic watches are more expensive generally, but usually also higher quality.

A good brand for automatic starter watches is Orient. They have a number of offerings in the ~$100-$150 price range that are very very good quality for the money you're paying.

Here are some specific recommendations for watches that are a great bang-for-buck ratio:

1. Orient Mako II (automatic, $169, "dive watch" style).
   
   
2. Orient Bambino (automatic, $159, "formal" style).
   
3. Timex Weekender (quartz, $37, casual)
   
   
4. Seiko 5 Automatic (automatic, $70, "formal" style).
   
   Generally speaking, most watches from Timex, Seiko, and Orient are all great, quality starter watches. I personally own an Orient Mako II in pepsi, which I love. Feel free to PM or check out /r/watches for more information.

I've been tempted to get that exact Seiko, but a couple of things have stopped me: the nylon band is not that good, and the watch itself is really small. I am used to old automatics in the 36mm range but somehow that seiko feels much smaller and lighter. On the other hand, the sandblasted finish and glass on the back make it really attractive and different. One thing I noticed is that different sellers list different prices for that model according to color. Blue tends to be the most available and lower price, while black is higher and more scarce. I have no idea why. There are green and khaki version too, if I am not mistaken. So I suggest you check in a couple different places.

How would you feel about an eco drive? I think this blue dial would look nice in a different band.

For automatics check Orient too. The Tri star are the most affordable and have a retro look. I like this one, the faceted glass may be strange at first but is a detail I've really liked after having one. Check the Orient bambino too. I recently saw this deal on the Orient Esteem, some people do not like the open heart but it is different and for me it makes the watch feel alive. I am not sure I would choose it because I check the date a lot, unfortunately. Another great deal I think is the Orient Full Date. Those hands and textured dial are really attractive in person and I always liked having the full day. The red tip on the seconds hand is a nice touch. Btw if you read the one star review you will see it is very positive and probably a mistake that it was rated so low. My final recommendation is the Orient Marshall, it has more of a sport look and the inner bezel can be used to time events. Check this video explaining it, I believe that is the exact same version.

Orient was a separate company but is part of seiko now, btw.

I have a certain preference for: Orient Bambino, Seiko cocktail time and the seiko presage... If you have any watches in mind that you think I'd like, your help is appreciated! And just so you know, my wrist is around 75mm. I like moderate-big watches (for example, I have the Casio MDV-106 which is 44mm and I like it, maybe I'd like a slightly smaller watch though).

You have a few choices. You could either go quartz or automatic. Quartz is where you have a battery (and sometimes solar charging), and automatic is when the movement of your wrist winds a little spring in the watch. Automatic watches require resetting every few weeks because they are not as accurate, but some people think they are cool. I will assume you don't want to deal with that, but if you do, something from Seiko would be your #1 best bet for sure.

This particular watch (which is what I am wearing right now) looks delicate but by all means, it is not. It is meant for scuba diving so you can swim with it and it is very durable to the point where I have accidentally used it to block a lacrosse shot and it survived without a scratch.

If you want to go Quartz, and for 200$, probably solar, you will want to go Citizen.

The watches I listed here are much more versatile than most of the ones you linked to, (except for the G-SHOCK, don't wear that with a suit!) I will wear my Seiko Orange Monster with anything from a swim suit at the beach or with a black suit at a formal event. Description: This line of watches has been out now for a few years but can still be had on the internet, or eBay. I believe some sale links are found on the database as well, though some models can be hard to find. A cheap Speedmaster alternative that isn't a direct homage. The Seiko Meca-Quartz is being used recently in a lot of microbrand chronographs, and sold at a much higher cost than the SSB lineup. The 6T63 movement (also known as VK series when used in a non-Seiko branded watch) features an automatic like chronograph movement. The watch itself has a non signed, non screw-down crown, and raised pushers at 2 and 5 o'clock. These pushers have significant tactile feedback that is hefty and nice for a watch at this price range. The chronograph hand also immediately snaps back upon reset, rather than rotating the remainder of the distance. Battery life is expected 3 years.

What this means is the watch will be a quartz watch, however the chronograph hand will sweep at 1/5 seconds intervals, rather than tick. This means you get an automatic like sweep, with quartz accuracy for a way lower cost than an automatic chronograph, and you don't having to worry about keeping your watch wound. This particular line of watches has a wide variety of dials with different combinations to choose from. The cheap feeling metal band can be a downside, but that can easily be swapped out for something nicer. Overall, you get the best of both worlds, quartz and automatic for a very nice price. As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, you need to decide what you are looking for in a bit more detail. Is it a particular look or style? Is it an automatic or quartz movement? There are a lot of options even once you get these two aspects narrowed down. You can always buy the watch and strap separate as well, to get the combination you are looking for.

I personally have a Citizen Nighthawk on a black Hirsch Liberty strap and a Citizen Eco-Drive with blue hands on a brown Hirsch Liberty strap. These are very likely much cheaper than you are looking for as a grad gift, given the $700 limit listed, but the Citizen Skyhawk is closer to your limit and is really nice too.

When it comes to automatic movements, it will be quite easy to get to the $700 limit. Hamilton is a favorite, with both the Khaki Field and the Jazzmaster being good possibilities.

My only advice is to stay away from "fashion" brand watches. A little reading in /r/watches, particularly the buying guide and sidebar, should help you a lot.

That's a great find! The lack of heel might be odd if you aren't use to it, so watch for arch pain. As for the shoes, check the heel stitching and make sure it isn't loose, and that the sole is in good condition without uneven wear. A cobbler can easily fix those things. Also, check that the tongue and vamp seam isn't stretched or torn. Also, switch out the laces a thiner braid, waxed ones if you can - something slick to match the shoe.

As for care, definitely check out the "Put This On" episode that Thamonsoon recommended. Your initial clean will be cleaning the dust off with a damp cloth, get in the seams - try a toothbrush. Then wait for them to dry and give a good brushing. For continual maintenance, I'll copy my shoe care suggestions I made from another post here:

"I made another post about boat shoe care, so in that style I'll give you the basics of caring for your new shoes.

You will need a soft cloth, any jersey cotton will work, or you can buy a shoe rag, a stiff brush, cedar shoe trees and some shoe polish. This will cost you about $30 USD and last a while.

• After a day of wear: Brush any mud or debris off of them, don't forget the soles, and give them a quick wipe with a damp cloth. Put in the shoe trees so that they fit snugly, but not too tight.
  
  
• Every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on usage: Polish your shoes. To do this, start by removing the laces and cleaning the shoe of any dust or debris, if you use a damp cloth, wait for the shoes to dry before continuing. Then, take your polish brush, collect some polish from the tin on the bristles and brush your shoes until you can see a thin layer of polish on them. Once you've covered all the sides and seams, let them stand for 15 minutes or so for the polish to set.
  After they've set, buff you shoes vigorously with your polish brush until they have a lustre and you can no longer see the matte texture of polish. If you wish to "shine" your shoes, give them that reflective lustre, take your polish rag and give you shoes a once over with polish. Just enough so you can see you've covered the shoe. Then add a few drops of water to an area of the shoe an buff with the polish cloth to a mirror shine. Continue until the all the polish is buffed, adding water drops as necessary. That's all.
  
  
• When they've become considerably soiled: Make sure the shoes are dry, then clean off any dirt. Take a damp cloth and wipe the shoes down, using a brush or you finger to clean out seams and stitching. Pay attention to tongue seams, sole stitching and lace eyelets. Allow the shoes to dry completely and polish as above, however, when first adding the polish, let them sit for an hour or two for the leather to absorb the polish well, this should ease the stress of the dirt drying the leather and the water affecting the panels.
  
  As for brands, Kiwi is affordable and accesible to most people. There are other brands, so if something is easier for you to get, that's fine. If you need help with selection, just give your location and I can find some local options. As for colour, try and match the polish, but if you don't want to, you can go with neutral - it will do no harm, but your shoes may have a diminished lustre or show more patina ageing as you wear them, as it lacks any colouring. Definitely don't think an "Express" or "Rub-on" option will do the same, it won't and your shoes will suffer in the long term because of it.

First of all, skeleton watches when not done correctly are absolutely ghastly. Look at any number of Stauers, Akribos, invictas and friends for reference.

Secondly, a good skeleton will generally be manual wind instead of automatic, as to not obscure the beauty of the movement. Some of the big names have skeletons with micro rotors, but you're looking at 5 figures.


Something that might appeal to you is an open heart style watch. Something like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005HZU7LK might be a good fit for you and can be found around your budget. Some companies that make affordable open heart watches are Orient, Bulova and Sea-Gull. These are reputable manufacturers. There are dozens of poorly made Chinese brands who make open heart, but QC is a crapshoot.

Looking for a watch similar to the Fossil Decker chronograph, or the Casio Edifice. I'm looking at a watch for flying but general usage day to day as well. I like the look of a tachymeter (the overall busy look) and a big face. I do have really small wrists but I prefer the look of a 44mm watch over a 42mm.

Quartz movement, Chronograph are the requirements. Preferably under $CAD 200.

If the former latter, then perhaps a hard-wearing quartz is a good idea. If you want something special, but that you'll have to take care of, then your budget could easily allow you a dressier mechanical watch (auto or hand wound).

There are several!

The Christopher Ward C60 Trident 300. It's the quartz version of what I personally feel is one of the best Diver watches on the market.

Casio MDV-106. Another quartz diver, and also pretty inexpensive!

Actually basically any Casio watch. The F91W, the A158W, CA-53W, any of the Edifices, etc.

There are also a tonne of quartz Seikos out there. I can't think of many of the top of my head, but like all Seikos, they're great quality for a decent price.

If we can bend the rules to include Solar watches, that opens up to both more Casios, as well as Citizen's lineup of watches. My personally favourite is the Nighthawk (A pretty cliche choice, I know), but they have watches in so many styles, include dressier ones. Another Neat one is the Altichron which has a manual compass and altitude display.

That's also not including more high end Quartz watches, such as the Seamaster 2541 that Pierce Brosnan wore as James Bond in Goldeneye (I know that piece is no longer available on Omega's website, but it's easy enough to find secondhand).

So basically, I think I'd be okay lol

Honestly, I think what you get depends a great deal on your guys. You know them, we don't. That said, I'd be just as happy with this as I would be with the Seiko. Is the Seiko the "better" brand? Perhaps. But in that price-range, I feel like you would be just as well served by some of Casio's and Timex's offerings. I would also echo /u/Alex7302 and recommend Orient as an alternative brand to consider. I love mine.

Okay, a heart monitor means a smart watch, which isn’t really the thrust of this subreddit, but you might get some suggestions. Not from me though :-)

If you want something more watchy, I suspect a dress watch will be too delicate for you, as you’re young and want to dress it down too. So you want something more versatile. A diver might be good as it’ll dress up or dress down, looks good with a suit, in jeans, or on the beach.

The Orient Ray II is an attractive, well made diver with a good movement that might work for you.

If you do want something more traditionally dressy, Orient Bambinos are great, but they’re not tough. Check out the buying guide for more $0-250 suggestions.:-

If you want to go for the original look, I believe that the Big Zero crystals were flat-topped, so they were more cylindrical than domed. You can typically find that style on ebay if you search for "Big Zero Crystal" (here, for example). It's not a horribly common style, so I doubt that most watchmakers would have one.

Alternatively, a standard domed crystal would also work. A local watchmaker might have one in stock in the right size (or could certainly order one if they don't have it); you can also get them at Esslingers.com. Getting the right size can be tricky, though; I don't know what size crystal it takes (the ebay link above says 35.5mm, FWIW). You can get a cheap caliper to measure the opening, but the crystal needs to be slightly larger than the opening (as it need to be compressed when it is installed).

Acrylic crystals can be a bit tricky to install (if you do it yourself). Ideally, you'll want to use an actual crystal insertion tool, but they aren't particularly cheap. The cheaper alternative is a crystal lift. I'm not a huge fan of the lifts, as they seem to be best for scratching and/or breaking crystals, but some others have had better luck. If you're just looking to have this single crystal installed, you will probably want to have a watchmaker do it; if you want the original look, buy a crystal on ebay to supply to them, and if not, let them supply a domed crystal for you.

I'd also recommend that you pick up a tube of polywatch from Amazon; it is fantastic for taking out light to medium scratches.

Hello! I know everyone has their own tastes, and this may very well have been exactly what you wanted. If you knew exactly what this watch was, and still felt okay spending what you did on it, then I'm happy for you and you can stop reading!

Cartier is the only exception coming to mind right now.

I originally got started with a Citizen Eco-Drive chrono. Mine still runs after 10+ years, and looks great on a black leather strap with white stitching.

It's solar powered, and Citizen's solar tech is crazy good. After a year in a box it starts ticking the moment it comes out, and with regular exposure to light it'll just keep going. No battery changes needed, and it has quartz precision. Like I said, mine is over 10 years old.

That's where I recommend starting – simple, hands-off operation. Only once you've started to develop a budget and a more genuine appreciation should you venture into the land of automatics. Going to college you definitely want to be on time, and you don't want to have to care about setting the watch every time you don't wear it for a few days.

Though I don't own any myself, Timex is a reputable low-cost vendor to consider as well. Their Expedition series is nice, as well as the some what odd Flyback. If you happen to be into pure digitals, then Casio is the king.

that bulova is great but its quartz, if you don't mind a quartz watch it opens up a WHOLE slew of different options under 200$. If I was buying a simliar styled watch under 200$ and didn't mind quartz I would probably look at Citizen Eco-Drive watches, the quality is usually outstanding and the solar feature is fun and very useful.

The Timex Fairfield Chrono is a good pick, though at your budget I would recommend the upgrade to either one of the Tissot Everytimes for the sapphire crystal or one of the Citizen AU1080 for sapphire in addition to solar power. For something a little more "sophisticated" looking there's the Tisell Bauhaus or one of the Junkers quartz Bauhaus watches.

Clean dials (Bauhaus, especially) are usually pretty versatile because they blend better with more outfits without clashing, though they can get a little dressy. For more simple dials that aren't too formal:

-Seiko SNKN47

-Citizen "Chandler"

-Citizen "Corso"

-Citizen "CTO"

-Messerschmitt KR200-SS

-Bulova Accutron - Quartz movement, but has a nice sweeping seconds hand similar to that of a mechanical watch instead of the ticking motion of a standard quartz.

You could go another route which is the dressy chronograph. You don't want it to be too big though. Depending on wrist size and your overall build I would say 42mm tops, around 40mm or less is best. For example:

-Citizen AO9000-06B

-Bulova 96B262

-Orient Panda

-Seiko SNDC31 and SNDC33 - These two would be my top pick for the dressy chronograph, or the Orient Panda.

You could probably get away with wearing a diver too. Divers are tool watches so I personally wouldn't wear them with anything past maybe business casual (James Bond wears his diver in a tux on a Nato strap no less, but he's fucking James Bond so he gets a pass). Some popular ones are:

-Orient Mako II

-Orient Ray II

The Casio MDV106-1AV is a perfect daily use watch and does look like the Rolex Submariner but is a great watch in it's own right. It is quartz rather than automatic but considered by many to be best available budget dive watch. You can purchase the bracelet for it for less than $30.

If you must have an automatic rather than a quartz then the Orient Ray II is a great option that is also similar to the Submariner in terms of design but again a quality time piece in and of itself.

And if you aren't bothered about having the Rolex style looks, the Seiko SNZH55 is designed along the lines of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and also an excellent timepiece.

First suggestion:
Doesn't check all of your boxes but hear me out when I say I would get a Seiko SARB033. In my opinion, the SARB has a quality worth every penny and is a fan favorite that will look amazing for your wedding and there on.

Second suggestion:
More to your requests is orient. Orient has a lot of open heart watches under 300 dollars but I just happened to like this one and if im not mistaken, most of their movements are in-house.

Someone is offering to buy me a watch for Christmas, they haven't put a limit on the price but i want it to be under $250.

I currently have 4 watches, all pretty cheap. A Stührling, Timex, Casio, and Bering.

I know this is a really long post with a lot of different watches, but I just want to get something reliable and not similar to what I currently have (to a degree). Thanks ahead of time!

For watches, I've owned smart watches (pebble and a moto 360) and own many analog watches. I prefer analog to a fitness or smart watch any day of the week if your primary purpose is to have a watch on your wrist (and not an extension of your smart phone).

For watches, I have 3 recommendations, all under $100:

   Watches are extremely personal. The colour of dial, bezel, and strap can be endlessly customized. Gold tones are very popular right now though a black strap/silver or white dial will always be a classic.
   Another thing to consider is the size of the bezel. You'll want to pick the right size of watch depending on your wrist size.

Absolutely nothing wrong with an $80 watch though, I've funneled a ton of money into the more affordable ones to love and cherish until I could get this one. Amazon has good prices for Citizen watches, this one is 40$ over the budget but it's a beautiful watch.

/u/nortbair321 if you find one you like, add it to your wish list and Amazon will let you know when (if) the price drops. If you like something and you're patient you can get a great deal.

The SARB033 is very much worth the price IMO. It has a sapphire crystal and uses Seiko's 6R15 movement, based on the venerable 7S26, but has hand-winding and hacking. Fit and finish should also be superior to Seiko 5s, but YMMV depending on the Seiko 5 model.

If saving for another month is out of the question or you just absolutely must have a watch within your target budget right now, there are a few Seiko 5 alternatives. Note that the 5s all have day/date complications as opposed to the date only on the SARB033.

There's the SNK795, which shares the same design as the SNK793 you posted, just in black with a red seconds hand. It's about $100-110 depending on seller.

This SNK605 comes a bit closer in terms of the design of the hands, but is still a far cry from the SARB033. The dial is textured instead of flat black and Amazon seems to have some discrepancy over whether the dial is dark brown or black. Jomashop's picture shows a black textured dial and the price is much lower than on Amazon so I would go with them if you pick this model.

My last suggestion before I have to run is the SNKK71. It has a refined look reminiscent of the SARB033 while keeping it's own identity. Again, priced lower on Jomashop than Amazon, but not by much.

The Orient Bambino is another watch to consider. ~$130-200 depending on who you get it from. The ER24004B version is the one with the tapered hands, but may be slightly more difficult to find now.

For reference, here's Watch Sleuth's Seiko 5 Finder. It's pretty nice for comparing the different Seiko 5 models and maybe you'll find something you like. FWIW, I would personally save up for the SARB033 instead of settling or a Seiko 5 if that's what you really have your eyes set on style-wise. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with any Seiko 5 IMO.

I purchased my first watch in 2015, a Fossil chronograph, which served me well considering I knew nothing about watches when I bought it. Since then I have developed an interest, which this sub helped to kindle.

I received this watch, the Seiko SNN241 Chronograph, from my dad and step-mom as a belated graduation gift in August. Since then I have worn it almost daily. I quite like the date window, which my previous watch did not have. Another unique note is that the second hand is actually the bottom dial; the "main" second hand is used for the stopwatch function.

Hey! So I've been lurking around here for a while, not sure what the fuss was about but after a bit of review videos, going through top>all, I think I'm starting to catch the hype about watches, and kinda wanna dip my feet in to start off.

I did my research and was going to pull the trigger on a Seiko 5, but thought about chronograph watches for a second. While I do enjoy the look of a chronograph, I also have use for them as a result of a couple of my hobbies, but realistically its more of a want than a need.

This subreddit seemed really enthusiastic (I wonder why) about watches, so, I figured it'd be best to ask here for opinions and go through my options for a chronograph before I pull the trigger on the Seiko.

I'm not a fan of the Hamilton's muted bezel, but I like the dial the best. Hamilton has two other versions of the Khaki that have better looking bezels, this and this.

As far as the other two goes, I like the SKX013 slightly better. I'm a fan of the dots as opposed to the typical lines you'd see in most watches.

Got it today, the second hand is off just a wee-bit, but screw it... Citizen will take care of that with a warranty should I decide to get OCD on it. If you dig the open heart look on the dial, I think this is way cleaner looking than any of the Seiko watches you've been looking at. I feel like if you're going to have that open heart on the dial, the rest of the dial shouldn't be so busy.

If Roman numerals are more important to you than the open heart, Orient again has very clean looking models in your price range. Just search "Orient watch Roman Numerals".

That's really awesome. I can relate to this pretty strongly since my father collects watches and got me into them as well. His piece of choice for every day wear when I was a kid was a Submariner that he still uses - maybe one day it'll be mine too! :D

What you mentioned about the clasps feeling cheap is quite true. If I understand correctly, for a long time it was more-or-less a trademark of Rolex, despite how counter-intuitive that may seem. More modern Rolex pieces have machined (as opposed to stamped) clasps which feel much more solid and less cheap.

Seiko Men's SKX009K2 vs Seiko Men SRN049

Which one should I go for? If I'm stuck with only one for a while? I know the diver watch series of SKX007/009 will be a classic but I'm stuck wanting a manly watch and an elegant watch. Seiko is pretty nice for price and my budget in general.

My general outfit is usually white wife beater (a shirt), a tapered denim jacket by brave star denim, and brown/tan chino or denim.

I am an English teacher at an urban, low-income high school in the city, and one of my students, one of my BEST most AMAZING students, a really respectful girl who cares about her future and her grades and got ME dinner at her work one day after school after I gave her a ride there, came bouncing into the room telling me she really wanted the new Kelly Rolland CD, and how I should buy it for her. She wasn't being greedy, she's just like that. She doesn't really expect me to get it for her, but I'd like to, anyway!!!

Ok, here's my take on this. You're not a watch guy so let's go with a quartz watch. Quartz is just better in every way while being cheaper, except for the "cool" factor, which only watch guys really care about. You don't want to spend a lot of money on a watch. You don't mention that you want to impress people with your watch, just that you want a watch you can wear in a lot of places.

So I wouldn't spend even close to 10k. I would honestly recommend something like this Timex, this Seiko, this Casio, or maybe this Citizen. They're all nice enough to wear to work, casual enough to wear at home, and well within your budget. They're also all from respected brands that will get some respect from most people on this subreddit. If you decide you like wearing watches you can always get something nicer later, but for now, why spend more?

One thing these watches won't do is impress watch snobs, rich people, or pretentious co workers, so if that's one of your goals I'd go with one of the other recommendations in this thread.

The arms do not fit right at all (if I try to raise my arms above my head in a V shape, the shirt gets too tight in the armpit/lats area, I didn't even know shirts could do that), I will never wear it again after halloween, but it was the only thing that was even close to looking similar.

For the maroon undershirt, I already had one from Target/Mossimo brand, their t-shirts are pretty good quality, cheap, and soft as hell. This thing is pretty spot on.

Jeans I was just going to wear a pair I already have, not too worried about the dye/color.

Glasses were a pair of aviators I had. They're not mirrored, but whatever.

So yeah, there's a lot of corner cutting, but most McFly costumes look bad because people have no idea how to buy fitted clothes. Jeans are super loose, jean jacket way too big, puffy vest too big, etc. All this stuff fits me very well, so it actually looks pretty well put together. I also got a cheap pair of Y black suspenders from amazon. If you really want to be authentic you can get a nice pair of purple Calvin Klein underwear, I didn't feel like spending $20+ for that though.

I own a pair of thorogood plain toe that have stood up wonderfully throughout winter and a year of work in a receiving area.

They are just a bit slick in snow if that is an issue.

Chippewa are also recommend budget boots. They also go on STEEP discount when on sale. So track that or look on black friday for an Amazon shoe sale.

BUT, I also have a pair of red wing heritage and a pair of Wolverines. The difference in workmanship is definitley noticeable. And the good wear welt means replaceable sole.

Sierra trading post has great deals on 2nds, and the jump in price is not significant compared to a good pair of "budget" boots. I got my red wing heritage for a bit under 200. Usually not much more than a small scuff or random marking.

For quartz watches, it's impossible to not talk about Citizen and Seiko. Both brands are Japanese and make awesome (and affordable) quartz watches. Check out both of their brand guide pages, they make nice stuff. The citizen Eco-Drive watches, when supplied with light, while run for nearly forever.

As for me, I'm sort of in the same boat as you. For my first "real" watch purchase, I got a Seiko SNN241 and love it. The face is much more reflective then it looks in the picture, which is nice. Also, the outer and inner rings have a slightly different sheen to them, which adds a nice stepped look. I couldn't be more happy with it, and it's priced really nicely.

Timex Expedition Scout Chronograph. Also comes in tan and blue faces. I think this is one of the best deals in the budget watch category. The looks are rugged and handsome, the chrono is useful, and the Indiglo backlight rocks.

You're not going to find a good skeleton for less than probably 2K. However, have you seen 'open heart' watches? Something like this Orient Esteem is closer-ish to a skeleton. Orient makes good watches, and it's well well well well within your budget.

Two watches come to mind when you mention the speedmaster, Tissot has a nice offering in the Tissot V8 though it is a quartz watch, as well as the Seiko which, both of which look really nice and are kind of homages to the speedmaster. At that price range if you want a really nice finish on a Speedmasteresque watch it's possible to find but the quartz in that range are beautiful and certainly worth consideration. I'm not familiar with automatic speedmasteresque watches in that price range but if that's what you want let me know and I'll look around for you!

Furnishing for your apartment, there are TONS of different designs though if you don't like this one and I love mine so much! They are both decorative and useful. <3

Yes do condition them before you wear it with any of the products mentioned. Honestly dont worry about them too much, the boots are pretty resilient. Dont overcondition though, probably no more than once a month(?) depending on how much you are wearing them. Just clean it up once every few wears with a damp warm rag and brush it out. If it gets into mud/snow then definitely clean immediately after wearing.

OK... this is an often-visited topic here. Most high-end watches are mechanical movements, but many non-watch people wear quartz watches. (here is the section of the FAQ that explains this)

If mechanical sounds good to you, the go-to suggestions for cheap blue-dialed diver's watches are:

You may be interested in a Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic which can be had on Amazon for less than $400. It uses a Swiss ETA movement similar to the Stowa. In some ways, it meets in the middle between Stowa and Seiko in terms of price and quality.

Generally, for more expensive pieces, you're paying for the finishing and quality of the components, as well as the horological significance of the brand. Whether or not these things are worth it to you will depend on how much you value that sort of thing, and how much disposable income you have. I'm a student and I love my SNK809 and SKX013. I would be thrilled to own a $5000 watch, but at this point in my life, there are better things for me to spend my money on than a high-end Swiss timepiece. Perhaps when I reach a career milestone a few years down the road, I may decide to pull the trigger on a Rolex or Omega, but until then, I'll wholeheartedly enjoy my Seikos.

My first GYW pair as well, also black cherry. I picked up a Lexol Leather Care Kit that comes with leather cleaner and conditioner. I wore them a few times and then cleaned and conditioned them according to the kit instructions. After each wear I brush them down with a horse hair brush and when I'm not wearing them I put in shoe trees.

I clean/condition them after about 5-6 weeks, unless I get them really muddy or something. There are surely others on this sub with better knowledge of leather care, but this routine has been working fine for me so far. Most will recommend giving them 24 hours to rest after wearing, but, y'know, they're boots.

I'd personally go Orient. They have an in-house automatic movement and some really beautiful watches. In my opinion they're the absolute nicest watches you can get for usually under $200. Everyone says they feel like they're worth twice that much. I am constantly getting complements on mine.

1. Seiko SNE031 - white dial with black hands on a bracelet. 37mm size is very traditional and will look classy. I know this is r/AskMen, but I'd like to chime in as a woman who also generally goes braless (I'm a small B cup). My issue with going braless was the prominence of my nipples. I've been lurking for a while but finally made an account to ask this:

I decided to go with Red Wing Beckmans (9023) as my first high-quality footwear purchase. I also purchased a Kiwi 100% Horsehair Shine Brush, a Lexol 907 Leather Care Kit, and Woodlore Adjustable Men's Shoe Tree (Cedar).

My first question is: how should the shoe trees fit into my Beckmans? I went to a Red Wing store and got sized. They said I have wide feet and recommended I get 8.5 (I usually wear 8.5s in regular footwear like Van's and Nike). I purchased the 8.5 Beckmans and I've worn them about 8 times now. Out of paranoia, I double checked with the Red Wing store to see if the boots were creasing properly (as I have a lot of toe space and was worried that it might be too big). They assured me that It was fine. I ordered size medium (8-9.5 size) and They arrived yesterday. I inserted them into the boots but noticed that it was pretty difficult to get them in there and the heel of the shoe tree scratches against the heel of the boot when inserting. I notice if I wiggle the front of the shoe trees in a bit more before inserting the heel, it doesn't scratch the heel of the boot. I apologize if the picture quality is poor , I only have my phone at this time. Is this okay for my Beckmans? Or should I return these for a different shoe trees? I'm worried about them being stretched improperly. If I should get different ones, can someone direct me to a specific shoe tree? Here are some pictures of my 9023s with the shoe trees.

My second question is, do I need any other care products than the ones I listed above? My care regime currently will be to brush after each use, shoe trees for a minimum of 1 day before next wear, Lexol clean and condition once a month and/or after they get really dirty.

Sure. The Japanese are kings of value at that price point, and you'll have a fair share of selections from a few brands, types of movement (automatic/mechanicals, quartz, UHF quartz, solar quartz, etc.) and styles (diver, field, pilot, chrono, etc.) all good for day-to-day wear.

A good place to start is look through listings from Seiko, Orient, Citizen, and Casio's Edifice line.

A few examples:

Seiko SNZF17(black) / SNZF15(blue/pepsi bezel) - automatic diver style

If you really like the MVMT, just buy it, but do so knowing what you're actually getting. The particular model you linked has a chronograph but doesn't even have markings on the subdials, so the chronograph is kinda pointless - how can you tell which dial is which?

Honestly, I'm going to go against the grain here and mention some other really nice looking watches for just a few dollars more.

This casio world time is slightly above your price range, but is a really nice watch, from a reputable brand. It has dual time zones, and is radio-synced for guaranteed accuracy.

While everybody is mentioning the seiko 5, I much prefer the look of the Orient watches.

There's also Some timex chronos that I think look absolutely gorgeous, and are within your budget.

Watches by Avi-8 can usually be found cheaper on eBay. I have the 2nd one linked and the lume is top notch. I also have the Citizen which is a wonderful brand. I collect watches, haha.

You'd be surprised. I thought I'd scratch the shit out of my Raven but the acrylic is still mostly scratch free. I have some small hairlines, but those are polished out with Polywatch.

Acrylic also stands up better to harsh drops/bangs which would normally shatter sapphire.

Nice watch though. I like the choice.

Watches like Seiko's SKX007, SKX013 or SNZH57 are much better quality watches, and would be great for you because they have a very healthy modding community. You can buy all of the bezel inserts you want to use with a SXK007/SNZH57/SKX013 and swap them yourself. You can even change everything to make it look just like a blancpain fifty fathoms.

For my brown leather shoes, I use this to apply this. And then I hit it with this. There's a lot of different ways to go about it though. Put This On had an episode dedicated to shoes and they demonstrate how to polish your shoes in the film. I highly recommend checking it out (along with their other videos - very good stuff). If OP wants something more dressy: the Orient Bambino. However, note that there are three major different versions/styles, each with various dial colors.

For something different, how about a solar-powered watch? While they're quartz, you won't have to worry about battery changes for 10-15+ years (maybe 20+, if you're lucky). Citizen has a nice casual flieger-style watch, and Amazon has it for under $120. There are lots of choices here, from Citizen, Casio, and others.

At this point i'm just trying to establish a collection from nice watches that will last me a while. Right now I only have an Invicta Aviator Tritnite, but I am looking to expand to different ones. I found several watches that interest me from a simple aesthetic stand point, such as this bulova as well as this other Bulova 97B151 and this Seiko diver, but I am not sure if they are good watches to stem a collection off of.

It looks like you don't need a whole lot of support, just nipple coverage? If so, and if the cups are sewn on top of the lining, you could carefully remove them yourself and just use stick on covers like these.

[Mod] So I really want a Mako II with the seconds hand from the Ray II, the bezel from a SKX007K and enclosed with sapphire glass.

Where do I begin? What's a good watch modding form to buy/trade parts from?

I haven't looked at the sizes of the cases to see if I could potentially drop the movement from the Mako II into the case of an SKX007 after swapping the seconds hand from the Ray II.

I wish the SK007 hacked and had a lume pip on the indicator instead of the counter weight. Like the SKX013 does.

The SNZH55 would be perfect with a hacking movement and a bezel with more graduations.

Edit: I guess at the end of the day "saving" up for a Prospex SRPB51 would probably be easier and probably cost less in the long run but I still prefer the hour/minute hands from the Mako, and the seconds hand from the Ray.

Edit 2: This photoshopped watch is basically my "perfect" dive watch except with this bezel I just didn't want to do more photoshopping than necessary and the SEIKO SAMURAI bezel insert already lined up with the other watches.

I have one of these Seiko Chronographs and I love it. It is quartz but if you can get past that its a great piece. Chrono function is very snappy and the pushers feel really good. I got mine from my girlfriend for Valentines day a couple years ago. Its less than $150 all day long online as far as I can tell.

I'm looking to get an affordable, entry level chronograph and have narrowed down my choices to the Seiko SNDC81 and the Seiko SSB031. Both fill the same niche for me as being a semi-daily wear in a very casual, business casual environment. The SNDC81 has a really simple and retro look and I love the look of the textured crown. The SSB031 has a sportier look with the red accents and I find the mecha-quartz movement to be an extremely cool feature. Could anyone way in and help me decide?

I would recommend sticking to brands like Casio, Timex, Citizen, or Orient. Brands like Sturhling, Invicta, Nixon, Fossil etc. aren't quite as good quality and frankly won't be too well received here, not that you should care too much what other people think. Yeah, the Weekender is the one I ended up getting. I really like it, it fulfills the two tasks I require of a watch: 1) telling time and 2) not looking terrible. It's cheap enough (not $15 like I originally said, I paid $35) that you don't really even need to get it repaired, you could just buy another one. If it has sentimental value for you though, you do you.

If you're going to drop anything over $200 on a watch, I'd consider getting a mechanical watch.

They're not electronic at all, they rely solely on precision engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and quality control to function at all -- and they are accurate to within 0.01%.

To me, that is really cool, and I feel a lot of pride that people worked so hard on something so small. I also like the sweep seconds over the jump-pause of a quartz movement.

Cons: mechanical watches are more expensive to manufacture, have much lower accuracy (0.01% error for a quartz watch would be horrible, they're at 2-3 orders of magnitude better than that, for even crap quartz), and require you to wear them (automatic) or handwind them (manual wind) daily to function.

I would not necessarily recommend them, but Fossil has a wide selection you can see what looks you like. Their durability is pretty low and they charge a lot (even in a high margin industry, they charge a lot for how much watch you get), but they have most modern watch styles.

Hamilton Field Khaki Here with metal bracelet is a really flexible. It can be dressed up or down, and goes with other straps, like leather or nato. When you asked for versatile, that was the first watch I thought of.

You need some Polywatch, a few microfiber polishing cloth and a few minutes.

Wipe the crystal with a clean cloth to ensure that nothing remains that could scratch the crystal more. Apply a small drop of Polywatch to the crystal and polish with a clean cloth for two or three minutes with gentle pressure. Remove all residue with a clean cloth. Be happy.

If your cup size is small, try Nippies. I also have a wide rib cage with small breasts and bra fitting is very challenging. I don’t need a bra for support, just to keep my nipples from poking through my shirt. Nippies take care of that. I LOVE not having a band around my chest.

I'd look on watchrecon.com (or the app) for a blue Orient ray 2. You might fiind one bellow $100. Or you could stretch a bit and buy one new for about $130.. It's very versatile. You can wear it with a sui or casualy or even sporty.. It's a much better watch than any seiko 5 but if you must have a seiko than my pick would be the snkl41 or the black snkl43. It's elegant enough am can be dressed up or down easily. I also like its case with both brushed and polished surfaces..

I do not have much experience with orient outside the bambino, but the bambino is a pretty nice watch for its price range... since its mechanical though it'll be off somewhere in the range of +25 to -15 per day. for the most part since i have multiple mechanicals i dont ever really run into this outside of watches i keep on winders, since i just rotate through and set them as i need them.

as was mentioned somewhere else, accuracy is a little rough in the less expensive mechanicals.

I am looking for a classic brown leather strap white dial dress watch. I looked around and finally deicded on this Orient Bambino Version 2, but it is not available anywhere! Out of stock at all retailers. What would you recommend in this style which can be an alternative to the Bambino V2 which is in the price range $200-$250? I am also looking for a Diver's watch in the $150 to $250 range. The choices in this category are quite a lot - Seiko SKX Collection, Seiko Monster SRP Collection, the Orient Ray, Ray II, Mako, Mako USA II. It's overwhelming. With the Diver's watch I would like your recommendation specific to quality and technology of the watch. the stuff in the guides on /r/goodyearwelt was very helpful for me. after reading the stuff there, i bought some venetian cream and a horsehair brush. along with some soft cloths, i can do a pretty good leather care job.

i think the biggest things to note are: don't wear the same pair two days in a row, to give them time to dry out. condition when necessary. use boot trees if you can.

Ruthless as it is, I've tried stuff on in stores and then bought it on Amazon for cheaper—I've got some boots on the way now. I've also gotten a couple of staple watches for pretty good prices, but all of this is related to the fact that I have prime. Sometimes it's a weird system, as in the case of those boots, but if you're willing to learn how to work with it you can find pretty good stuff.

Well, you guys have successfully infected me with the watch bug! As I mentioned in my last post, I'm waiting to treat myself to a very nice watch as a reward for completing a big work project. Until then, I can't help myself by buying a few cheaper pieces. This is my second Citizen, which I bought because it seemed like a steal at $110 on Amazon and I don't have any large diameter watches.

I think it's a beautiful watch, and I don't know if the pictures really display just how large it is at 45 mm. My one quibble is the strap. The Amazon reviews are not kidding when they say this thing has an absurdly thick strap, as you can see in the fifth picture. Far too thick. It feels cheap and it's a real pain to put the watch on or take it off, and nearly impossible to do one-handed.

I haven't yet delved into the world of NATO straps, so I welcome any suggestions you guys have on nice brown straps to replace the current one with. I was eyeing this one, but I know nothing about what brands or straps are reputable, so any feedback would be very helpful!

I think the Orient Bambino would be a good pick (it's also available in a silver finish but black band so you'd have to change that yourself), more interesting than a sea of similar Bulova, Citizen, and Seiko quartz dress watches.

This Seiko Chronograph might be nice also but busier. And coming in well below budget is the Timex Forty Weekender.

I would reccomend an orient bambino for slightly more formal wear. Their ine of divers would also look god for daiy wear.

I have a buying question for y'all. I'm looking to expand my collection. Currently have an SXK009 which I love for wearing everyday, and this (http://amzn.to/2iXlD5I) Citizen Eco-Drive which I wear for more formal situations and will wear for work over the summer (currently a law student). I like the Citizen but it doesn't do much for my soul. I'm trying to keep my spend under $700 or so, and right now have been trying to decide if I should go for another diver or a little more formal. Also for a less expensive vs used and more established. Currently my main debate is going for a modern Seiko FFF mod from Yokobies (http://bit.ly/2iScomN) and tossing a Brady strap on it, or picking up a vintage Omega, probably from /r/watchexchange. Anybody have any good reasons for one over the other? I guess I'm a little concerned the FFF wouldn't be as good quality, or the Omega might be too small/not get enough wrist time. i did some more lookingI looked some more and found this, the Orient Esteem. The styling is very nice, although i can't say it's the exact font i would choose. It's on the dressy side but i think the right band would make it work, and i tend to wear nicer clothing. But the simple styling is nice, the window is why i like it, a skeleton is too much, the peak just sucks you in (although the plate covering a good portion is annoying). I haven't been looking at mechanicals much but i know it would need to be worn every other day at least to keep it running, and isn't it necessary to be more careful with them (try to to hit my wrist on something hard for whatever reason)? This is way over what i originally said, but there's 30% off, so it's 120. I doubt i'll get it for that, but the price just changed to that and hopefully it will go back down as it was 130 until 4:30 yesterday according to camelcamelcamel, which discounts to 90.
Other than that the only thing i found was the Seiko snn241 which is a little higher than i wanted to pay, especially compared to the orient.

Thinking about something mildly similar to the style of the Bambino, perhaps you could get a Seiko SNK795 (38mm) at $68.99 (according to Amazon), then invest in a leather strap. You could get a really nice one like this 19mm Hadley Roma and still remain well under $200, maybe even well under $200. I think it looks great, and the Seiko 5 series is known to be good and reliable.

At that price I would go with a Seiko SNZH55. The Amazon picture kind of sucks, but if you do an image search you'll find some much better pictures. Spend the left over cash on a Hirsch Liberty strap. You'll have something that looks like this.

I like these, considering they can be dressed up some, although they're slightly out of budget. Check out nordstrom rack, look for brands like Allen Edmonds, Loake, and Redwing.

More casual, you would look at the L.L. Bean Katahdin, which is made by chippewa. It's also slightly out of budget. The key is that the boots I've linked are all stitched construction. Instead of the sole being glued on, they're stitched instead. While they can be resoled easier, the main selling point is the fact that they won't fall apart in less than a year.

Edit: I wore these in highschool and they served me well. Not everyone's cup of tea, though.

In your frat clothes, I'd say the best would be to have a black face with a brown leather strap like you asked earlier. I just recommended this watch but you might like that one. As for brands, Seiko, Timex, Nixon, and Casio should be affordable and good quality.

Still think the Hamilton Khaki Field (38mm) is one of the best values for an everyday watch. I've done a bit of research and this watch seems to be well reviewed on all the watch forums I've visited.

Maybe you could use the remainder on a nice pair of boots? Both will last you a lifetime.

I've personally had mine for months, wearing it almost every day, been in rain lots of time, survived water rides at Disney World. Never swam with it, but no hint of moisture or anything.

Also, all watches on Amazon include a warranty, even if not from manufacturer. They have an Asurion warranty which I've heard is good, though I've never used it.

The Danish Design and Timex were two of most unique ones in that list i made. The Skagen is very good, i own two of them and they are nice, robust watches. The hardened crystal on my 809XLTTM has been hit on rails and door handles and still doesn't have a nick in it. While that one doesn't mention if it has hardened mineral my other one (it is like the 233LTMN, but with a black face) has only recently gotten its first blemish after two+ years of near constant wear.

The Danish Design also comes in black. There are a few variants of the Timex (1, 2, 3, 4, & 5). The Skagen is on its own on Amazon but they do have a variety of watches with three complication to mimic the look of a chronograph if you like that style.

do you mean SNN241? there is no SNN24, is it this one?

if so, when you push the crown in after setting the time, do you see the small hand in the sub dial at 6:00 moving? on a chronograph the large second hand only moves when you engage the chrono using the pushers. the "running" seconds is usually done by the small hand on a sub dial.

next, if the small seconds hand does not turn, does the minute hand move with time? for example, if you set the time and leave the watch for say 15 mins, does the minute hand reflect that 15 mins has gone by?

many Seiko Mecha-quartz like the VK64 have no rinnig seconds, although I dont think this is a mecha-quartz movement.

Well those are one of the lower end ones outside the 1000 mile line. What you are really going to be missing out on is the Horoween leather found on the entire 1000 mile line. Sizing for almost all boots is .5 - 1.5 sizes down. I usually buy 1 size down from somewhere with a good return policy and hope for the best.

The Orient gets you a bit better bang for the buck with hacking and handwinding. Something that the Seiko doesn't give you. Now if we look at the look at Seiko's cheaper option, the SNZF15 at $139:

The Seiko SNZF15 doesn't hack or handwind, has only 100m water resistance, and although I haven't seen the two side by side, I'm willing to bet that Orient has slightly better quality materials/finishing than the Seiko 5.

Now the amusing thing about the Invicta is this, it uses Seiko's own movement that they use for $200-800 watches, yet they pack it in watches that come in under $100. Their quality and materials aren't even that bad, no worse than Seiko 5!

Prep your boots:

Knock back the finish a bit with some diluted dish soap and a scrub brush. Set them aside to dry.

Apply some Sno-Seal liberally with rag or brush. Allow to set. For the first coat, I like to hit it with a hairdryer to let it get into the leather's pores and all the nooks and crannies where boot meets sole.

Apply a second coat of Sno-Seal and wipe off the excess with a rag.

Now get an applicator brush, a polish brush and a wax matching the color of your boots. Kiwi is a good brand, I've been using it for years.

Swirl your applicator brush around in the tin of wax and then apply it to your boots in a vigorous circular pattern. Pay attention to the areas around the crevices (such as in the instep). Let it set for a few minutes and then brush it down with the polishing brush in a vigorous back-and forth motion. Do NOT rub hard with the polishing brush - you're trying to bring it to a shine / gloss, not rub it off.

With the base coat of Sno-Seal and a good layer of wax over it you should be good for all winter. Wipe off any dirt / snow / mud before storing them in the spring, then repeat the process above in the fall.

Hello gents, I'm trying to decide what watch to buy. My budget has a hard limit of $400 (weird right?) I've read the watch buying guides and there are some divers there that I like but lately this watch has been catching my attention. Does anybody here own a Citizen at4010-50e? Any reviews? Can I switch out the straps for nato straps or even leather ones? Also, any recommendation on good divers?

This would be more inexpensive. I haven't picked it up, but from what I understand the SSB line have a special meca-quartz movement. It is a quartz with a few mechanical parts which allow the chronograph hand to move in 1/5 seconds.

That should be hesalite - tap it with your fingernail and see if it's plastic or glass. If it's glass, then take it to a pro to polish out. If it's plastic, then it's really easy and you can do it at home in just a few minutes.

Now, given that the bezel looks great, cover it first with some low-tack masking tape. Rub the glass all over with 2000 grit wet and dry paper. It's going to look far worse before it looks better but have faith. There's no need to apply lots of pressure but 2000 grit wears out fast, so keep folding it over and keep sanding in a circular motion. Once all the big scratches are gone and you have a consistent "cloudy" glass, reach for this. I use a chamois leather but any clean cotton rag will do. Put a few drops on the glass and polish away. It won't take a minute to go from cloudy to as new.

If you haven't got the major scratches out, repeat all the above. After you're done this once, you'll get more confidence to do it again.

As for the servicing, I'm guessing with the LHD car that you're not in the UK? If so, can't really help on that one.

These nipple covers are the best. I can wear them with a really tight top and they don't show at all. Just make sure you get the right color. I have both the adhesive and non-adhesive versions, but I like the adhesive version better for when I'm wearing a loose top.

I bought this watch after looking through the Buying Guide thread. Someone mentioned the SEIKO 5 SNZH55 and in that comment the Fifty Five fathoms mod was mentioned. Intrigued, I looked it up and the original watch by Blancpain and was blown away. This is the second watch in my collection (My first being a Tissot Visodate), and I love this very much.

The only thing close with a similar look and 22 band size is this one. $67 dollars after the 20% coupon, which is about how much I ended up paying for the seiko 5, band, and spring bar kit.

However if you have a little more to spend and you don't care for movement, this watch is probably one the best quality/nicest looking ones quartz watch is this one in my opinion. However once you're around the $100 range there are tons of options. /r/watches is a good resource.

• Under $100, chronograph: Seiko SNN241. I use the chrono function every day.
  
• Under $100, time only: Seiko SNKK65 (automatic). I like mechanical watches.
  
• Under $50: Timex Easy Reader, day-date on leather. This might actually be the best looking watch under $100, period!

You can find some of this subs favourite watches here - all of them are under $150, because honestly, if you are going to spend more than that, you should probably do a significantly more amount of research. If you don’t like rubber strap, I would suggest getting a NATO strap-they are compatible with nearly any watch, and super cheap.

My personal recommendation would be a metal Casio A168 or MDV106 with a NATO strap

How about the Timex SL Intelligent Chrono series? I just bought one and I find them very unique, and a good value at the price range. They come in a variety of styles and colors, too. On amazon, they're mostly $100-150, so you should be able to find one in your price range.

The Seiko 5 SNK795 is rather neat for the price. The red second hand is a nice touch. It comes with a bracelet, and you ought to be able to find a cheapish leather strap for it, along with the spring bar tool for DIY bracelet/strap swaps. All together, your total is under $100.
