Chest harness is a good idea as others have said, but a head halter has worked better for us!

The logic behind these ideas is that dogs are wired such that when they feel a resistive force, they want to pull against it. The chest hardness works to help in two ways.

  1. It gives you an area of control to spread the force about instead of just on a single point/collar.
  2. If connected to the chest, it gives you a stronger point of control given that it is further from the center of gravity of the dog as well as being in front of its position.

The head halter helps take this a little further.
Instead of spreading the force across the dogs chest, it isolates the force to the head. If a dog wants to lead you while in these, it's head literally gets turned (gently, the owner is NOT supposed to pull/yank and gentle training before walks is a must). Because it's head gets turned, the dog will generally stop trying to take you in that direction, and MUCH less force is needed to accomplish this task.

Admittedly, it looks like a muzzle to someone unfamiliar with it, which is a shame with all of the negative publicity of pits. That being said, it isn't a muzzle, and it's a wonderful tool when teaching your best friend how to walk alongside you instead of leading. I would 100% recommend a head halter to any of my friends with any kind of dog that is just a little too enthusiastic about being the first one on the trail for their morning walk.

Thank you! We tried a few collars, I am the family researcher. We started with a denim collar (URPOWER Dog Leash Harness Adjustable & Durable Leash Set & Heavy Duty Denim Dog Leash Collar for Small, Medium and Large Dog, Perfect for Daily Training Walking Running https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GYJD24G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DD8ZAbPZ1SZCC) that was excellent. Specifically, it was soft and fit very well. The Xolo escaped once and I found the pink one as a improvement. So far no escapes. I do wish the fit was tighter on the front.

Here is the pink one:
Didog Soft Flannel Padded Dog Vest Harness, Escape Proof/Quick Fit Reflective Dog Strap Harness,Easy for Training Walking,Hot Pink S Size https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077CX4J9H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3y8ZAb5JWCX4V

Finally, I HIGHLY recommend the below for pulling xolos. She learned very quick that she could not get away with her “rooting and pulling” style. Also, I found it helped to get her to “look up” instead on sniffing her way around.

No chafing at all! I pinched her skin once in the buckle, but that was user error and my fault! 🤪

PetSafe Gentle Leader Head Collar with Training DVD, SMALL UP TO 25 LBS., BLACK https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00074L4O0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_MG8ZAbBNWJVEB

Hope I was helpful! Would love to see pics of your Xolo!

Looks like you have a good list going, remember to update your pups microchip with your address and get him/her a tag with your details.

We got a 36 inch crate and it's plenty big for our boy (he's around 30 pounds).

Puppia harness is a great starter harness, it's soft and doesn't have a bunch of metal jingling pieces which our puppy HATED on his harness our breeder gave us.

Kibble, check out dog food advisor for reviews and ratings of foods content, we were using grain free salmon and sweet potato from chicken soup for the soul, it's decently priced and well rated I can't find it anywhere atm so we're switching him back to their normal kibble.

Salmon Oil is a lifesaver in the winter, our pup gets terribly dry skin and extremely itchy without it.

Start out with a puppy kong, they sell kong fillers that are cheese and peanut butter flavored, our puppy was pretty picky at first and only ate the cheese one, didn't like frozen kongs either.

I'd start with a Basic Collar here's a Dog Tag Silencer and a Break-away collar for outdoors or dog park. A dog was choked unconscious at our park so I typically just keep our guys ID tags on his harness and don't use a collar, but if you do I definitely recommend a break-away if you are primarily using a harness with it.

Items we found useful: Bed Liner, Crate Fence, Kong, Stainless Steel Bowls (highly reccomend US made do not buy any made in China for health reasons), Zippy Paws Hide and Seek toys, Potty/accident cleaner, Potty Bells, Anti-chew Bitter Apple spray, 50 ft Leash, Retractable Leash, Soft stop Leash extender, Car Seat Belt, Car Booster Seat, Gentle Shampoo, Comb, Travel Water Bottle, Flirt Pole, Special Treats, Chew Stick, Greenies

Sorry for the HUGE list lol, feel free to ask any questions!

I have the Pioneer Raindrop fountain (here) for $30 and I use these filters. I only need to replace the filter once every one to two months. Totally worth it because of how much the cats love it, and it gives me peace of mind knowing that it's helping them stay healthy.

Our first cat, Roger (whom I originally bought the fountain for), was terrified of it at first. A month went by before he finally had the courage to drink from it, and then he quickly adored it. Unfortunately he passed away, and we adopted two kittens. Simon and Chloe instantly loved it as soon as we brought them home. So there's a chance she may hate it at first, but running water is very natural and appealing to cats. I think she would grow to like a fountain very quickly. :)

u/5603 · 1 pointr/bdsm

I had one for my dog. But it didn't last long even without using it often. The place where you replace the batteries and turn it off broke off. They are awesome but I wouldn't recommend this kind. I'd get a nicer one. It will save you money in the long run to get sometime like this
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IHYJYB2/ref=mp_s_a_1_4/189-8661251-9769164?qid=1426963428&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=dog+lights+for+collar&dpPl=1&dpID=41k0IvvF38L&ref=plSrch

Just seconding the raw diet suggestion. Especially for an Akita it should be a very easy transition... they were made to eat meat. We get compliments on our dog's coat all the time and our dirty little secret is we very rarely brush him. It's all him and the raw diet making us look good. It's also readily available food, just make sure any bones or anything that you give him are raw. Once they're cooked they can splinter, raw they are fine (even chicken/other bird bones).

For keeping him cool, I'm not sure what kind of access you'd have to refrigeration or electricity but there are collars that have reusable ice packs that slip into a pocket to keep the dog's neck, and blood to their brain, cool. Something to think about at least. [One on amazon].(http://www.amazon.com/Kool-Collar-Medium-Blue-Includes/dp/B00261NA58/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1348161877&sr=8-5&keywords=dog+cooling+collar).

Also, again depending on what type of accommodations you'll have and how permanent they will be... this summer we got a cool bed for our Akita since we don't have central air and it made a huge difference for his comfort at night. They aren't too big or bulky until you fill them up with water, so you could bring it over with you pretty easily and fill it once you're there. It doesn't sound like it'd work but it makes a huge difference and requires no electricity or anything. Only down side is it's a pain in the ass to have to move around or do anything with once it's filled with water. another amazon link

u/craigster38 · 2 pointsr/RunningCirclejerk

Don't forget one of these. I know it says dog collar, but we're descendants of dogs - that's why they're our best friends. So it's okay to wear it.

u/katsock · 6 pointsr/Dogtraining

To me personally, this isn't a great investment, when you could easily just add a clippableLED that flashes to any harness/leash/collar. When it dies, just buy a battery.

That is wholly just my opinion. I got a super cheap one at a dog event in town (that died immediately) but I really liked the idea and just bought a not "free with admission" quality version.

Yours does look cool though

Edit: I just realized that these could be less practical during the winter months. When the sun sets earlier and a lot of coats and sweaters can cover up a collar, while most have access to a harness clip. Yes you can always loosen up the collar to go over a sweater or coat, but that’s pretty risky

u/Impolite_sodomite · 9 pointsr/OpenDogTraining

Keeper collar, my friend.

I was also instilled on doing 100% positive only until my puppy gave me a good dose of reality. The R+ people tend to have soft dog breeds. They have never had to deal with a dog like the one you adopted either.

u/watsoned · 0 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It's kind of an unpopular opinion amongst some crowds, but when it comes to dogs that pull, I think harnesses are awful. I didn't even order them for the clinic past size medium. It only makes it easier for the dog to pull you (I used to explain it to people that they put harnesses on sled dogs...). If she ends up being the sort of dog that pulls (it's too early to tell and you've still got training to do) then I used to always recommend these sorts of collars. Yes, they are scary looking, but for a dog with pulling issues, it's very good at helping to keep them under control. I used to equate it, if you use it properly, to when your parents would pop you on the back of your head to get you to behave. Didn't hurt you but got your attention.

BUT, right now, she's far too little and young for that. Buy a cheap collar and a cheap leash. When you can, leave the leash hooked to the collar so she can get used to it; let her drag it around the house. She's going to hate it. She's going to rebel. That's the hardheaded chocolate lab in her. LOL

u/hellishly_subtle · 1 pointr/aww

We got a buddy for our dog, now they are the best of friends and much happier. But...THE BARKING. We finally caved in and tried [this] (http://www.amazon.com/SportDOG-Rechargeable-NoBark-Control-Collar/dp/B00173CWDW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1419175679&sr=8-2&keywords=no+bark+collar). Works like a charm. They are as happy and playful as ever, but quieter.

MY CAT NEEDS TO LOOK GOOD FOR HIS JOB INTERVIEW

u/JohnnyricoMC · 1 pointr/gerbil

I've got this wheel for my two little friends and it's remarkably quiet:
http://www.amazon.com/Trixie-Natural-Living-exercise-wheel/dp/B0057FZ9AO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

It runs on an axle with ball bearings. At first I thought the wheel would have too much mass, but in the evenings one of our two gerbils tends to go full throttle in it.

Also, gerbils like some privacy and some hiding places. Wooden houses or hollowed out coconuts are great. Mine gnawed away the ropes on this one: http://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Hendryx-62801-Naturals-Hideaway/dp/B007PO3AEC?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00 (bet they were really surprised when the coconut met gravity), so I replaced the upper rope (to suspend it from their ceiling) with a ball chain.

I've also found they enjoy lying in the morning sunlight, so you might want to place the tank somewhere it does get some direct sunlight some times of the day.

u/Hamamelidoxylon · 6 pointsr/gerbil

Thanks! It's the Trixie natural living wheel on Amazon - fingers crossed it will be put to good use! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trixie-Natural-Living-Exercise-Diameter/dp/B0057FZ9AO

u/FrolicMeToHell · 1 pointr/hamsters

I have a 28cm Trixie wheel. I don't find it too loud - definitely substaintially quieter than any wheel I had that attached to the side of a cage.

Is it silent? No. I keep it oiled (with vegetable oil) so it doesn't squeak, but it's not silent, it is however quiet for a hamster wheel. I have my hamster in my bedroom and the wheel never wakes me up or bothers me. I think maybe it did for the first few days? But I got used it pretty quick and I never notice it now :)

u/farfalilly · 3 pointsr/reactivedogs

This is the one I got, little higher price now though:

https://www.amazon.com/Dog-Bark-Collar-Upgrade-2018/dp/B072DS462V/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523858755&sr=8-3&keywords=dogrook+bark+collar

It's made in a way that the beep/vibrate gets more progressive if they continue to bark/growl. It was our missing link that taught her in 1 day that being so reactive wasn't okay, after a few days she was turning to us instead, paying attention. We've also been using 7 drops/day of 250 CBD oil, we saw some big improvements after a week or so of using it, the collar was the second half of our puzzle. Good luck to you, it can get beyond frustrating, I hope you figure out your puzzle!

Edit: If you do purchase it buy some good batteries asap, the 2 it comes with only work for a few days, they're junk. 1 Duracell has been going 6ish weeks so far.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I think Waffles needs one :P

Red Polka Dot

u/Lagomorphilic · 3 pointsr/PetMice

It's a wodent wheel. Same with the green one in there. Unfortunately, they are only available online, but they are fantastic wheels. Don't make a peep, easy to clean, solid floor, covered sides, come in tons of colors. Depending on where you look, you might be able to find them for decently cheap. I think I got the red one for $13 total, but it's been a while. The size my girls are using is 11", but the 8" would work well for mice too. Trixie wheels are also very similar in style.

By the way, the clips to hold the wheels up in your cage are genius! I'm totally going to steal that idea for future.

So sorry for your loss. They sell breakaway collars that come apart to prevent things like this from happening. Don't blame yourself OP, you probably gave her the best days of her life.

u/Pupper5000 · 1 pointr/Rottweiler

I’m assuming you mean the white circular thing? It’s a clip-on LED light! You press it to turn it on, and it’s decently bright. We use it for when we go for walks in the evening or when we let her out in the yard for potty at night, since she can be hard to see in the dark. It was less than 10 bucks on Amazon - I totally recommend it!

EDIT: Found it here! We got white, but it also comes in different colors

u/Ehlmanl2 · 2 pointsr/aww

Amazon! It's called Go Doggie Go This one came with a Micro USB to recharge it, so I'm hoping it lasts a while (:

u/Live_On_Mars · 1 pointr/puppy101

Similar situation here. Have a chocolate lab puppy who was terrible with walks at the beginning. I tried different collars and harnesses. Eventually I found the gentle leader, amazon link below.

https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Gentle-Leader-Collar-Donuts/dp/B01N7FKFY7

This has tremendously changed how she acts on walks now. It does not hurt the pup, and still allows them to open their mouth to breathe. With the gentle leader they are unable to pull since it will just pull their head around, and gives you more control.

u/SurfWyoming · 1 pointr/Unexpected

Congrats! What is the exact model you got?

>this thing is really hard to fly. It's super-hard not to immediately crash it. It's extremely sensible to controls and finding+keeping the neutral spot is "hold-your-breath" levels of sensitive.

It will be hard to fly for a day or 2. If its extremely hard, it could be in "expert" mode. Here is a guy messing with his rates. You will want to turn these down. If its in expert mode, thats going to be hard to start out.

>I cannot even fathom taking any actual footage with it. Too busy not having it crash.

You will get there, I promise

>it guzzles batteries. Not just the rechargeable one, but also the remote one which is already half-empty from new in just a few minutes. BTW it didn't include batteries for the remote.

The recharables go fast. If you want more flight time, get something like this. It will keep you in the air much longer! The remote should not be eating batteries that fast. Keep an eye on it and if it keeps it up, something is wrong with the remote.

>despite all the care, it lightly touched the door. Now the props have visible damage and I think it's more unstable because of it. I have spares, but at this rate I will need kilos of them.

Most of the time, those props can take a beating. But sometimes they hit something just right and break. A broken prop will throw it off, but shouldn't unless its heavily damaged. But be warned, yes, you will go through a ton of props no matter what. Its just part of the hobby.

>it's not a drone. Controls are 100% manual, it's a RC quadcopter.

If you got the x4, any kind will NOT be 100% manual. It has self stabilization, meaning it will try to center itself after every movement. Did you calibrate it like this Did you trim it? You will need to do these things. Once you have that figured out, it will (almost) hover by itself.

You want to start out flying LOS(line of sight, looking at it) first. Don't even bother with the screen right now. Fly indoors and only try and hover about 3-4 feet off the ground and get it to stay in one spot. Do this over nice, soft carpet or grass. Once you have that, start moving it left/right, then re-gain control. After you have that, start messing with the yaw. That will be the hardest part is controling the yaw along with the pitch (left/right) Here is your pitch, roll, and yaw. If that doesn't make sense, look up some other pictures. You will need to know these terms.

Hopefully this helps. If you have more questions, keep them coming. I am happy to help!

This is the collar I got for Hunter when he was 4 months old. I think in the 8 months since, he's only had the shock (static pulse) three times ever. I haven't even had to charge the collar for the last 6 months or so. If I ever see him gear up to bark, I hold up the collar and he pretty much submits right away.

This collar is very good.

Thanks! I found it on Amazon. I also found someone on Etsy that will make Gentle Leaders with fabrics of your choosing, maybe look into that? I don't see the item listing anymore, but it was at this shop.

I saw someone on here recommend a friendly bark collar (it beeps when they bark and vibrates like a phone after the third bark. Shes never made it past the beeping) and it has helped my dog immensely! She tends to bark at visitors when they come over out of fear. The beep snaps her out of her fear response and i am able to get her a attention and redirect. We’ve only had it for a week or two but it seems to be helping

I have this collar for my dog. It is great! Heavy duty, it's been washed many times and the stitching has not been affected. My dog doesn't swim too often, but he does go camping at our cabin a lot. We have a cabin collar for him! Then we don't care how nasty or wet it gets, because he will have a new one on to go home. I usually throw it in the wash when I give him a bath (not often, maybe 6 times a year max).

Since you said it looks awful because of his short fur I thought I'd recommend Keeper Collars. They're basically prong collars on the inside but look like a regular collar on the outside. I use one!

I made frozen "ice cream" for my husky. It's just greek yogurt (my picky dog does not like regular yogurt) and peanut butter mixed together and frozen in an ice cube trey. You can add a smooshed banana and other fruits as well. I also got my dog a cooling collar like this one http://www.amazon.com/Kool-Collar-Medium-Blue-tube/dp/B00261NA58/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1412736518&sr=8-2&keywords=ice+collar+dog

Haha buy a light up collar.

Glad to hear you got your dogs back. You should get them embroidered collars. Tags as you know are unreliable. Also get them chipped.

Get a prong collar. Works much better than a harness for keeping them from pulling. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GDZ0RO/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Is there a reason your dog can't wear a collar for his info? You could get one with a name plate or one like this if you're concerned with the tags getting caught. Even when my dog is wearing her harness or backpack she still has her collar on for her ID info.

I bought these already, seem alright?

We got the collar from Amazon (Direct Link to Collar). The name wasn't after Captain Chaos, but was a compromise after the family totally shut down my C'thulhu and I wasn't willing to go with Chewboxer.

We’ve got the donut themed one! 😋

The one by Petsafe hooks around the neck and the about so your pup wouldn't be able to slip out of it. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00074L4O0)

I haven't used it personally but I've been debating trying it since the front hook harness has lost its effect on mine.
