So, full disclosure this (and morning Uber rides to work when it's cold) is my biggest personal struggle, budget wise. That said, there are stretches of weeks/months where I'm damn near perfect with it and I can share those tips :)

So, the biggest thing for me is that I make sure that I've packed a snack to eat at 3pm every day. Even if I'm not hungry and even if I don't want that snack, I eat it. Because when I leave work at 6, I'm not so terribly hungry that even just boiling water for Kraft Mac n' Cheese is too much time/effort and "terribly hungry" is when the cravings get you and next thing you know, you're spending $25 on fancy ramen.

My personal go-to is sliced up red peppers and hummus or tzatziki sauce (which I rarely have at home so it's usually hummus). Protein is key to maintain the feeling of fullness, and the bulk of the vegetable satiates you. But it could be anything: mini Babybel cheeses (this is actually my go-to for breakfast-- some kind of seasonal fruit and cheese), a small charcuterie plate with olives and cured meats... whatever, get creative, don't ignore your calorie/ nutrition goals (this is why peppers and hummus are the best IMO)--just make sure it'll hold up in the fridge from Sunday- Friday and prepare enough to grab and go in the morning or keep in the work fridge and set a daily reminder for mandatory snacktime.

I've also started to make my own hummus, using this recipe1 (but I'm lazy and buy canned chickpeas--I do remove the skins). I can tweak it to my exact specifications and can make a whole lot of the stuff for very little money (compared to the store brands, the major ones of which I've never really loved). I'm not saying you have to do it, but it's something I've come to enjoy and makes me look forward to mandatory snacktime because I'm damn proud of the stuff.

Which goes into a more general tip: learn to cook some basics/ easy go-tos and make them yours and make them your favorite versions of said food (or at least your favorite available). A bit tricky for NYC when there's awesome food everywhere but you can do it.

Make use of that freezer. I have a go-to recipe for Mexican shredded chicken that I'll make pounds of in one go, and then freeze the extras in freezer friendly quart ziplocks (freeze them "thin" so defrosting takes 10 minutes in room temperature water. There are a million different receipes for this concept. Some limey and cilantro-y, some tomatoey and cuminy. Here's a quick and effective way to get an airtight seal and avoid freezer burn. Make a bunch of different types This then can turn into whatever. Stuff a quesadilla, make enchiladas, make some soup, mix in with rice, eat on top of a bed of spinach. Ditto with some sort of spiced ground beef (or turkey).

In addition, if you always have a couple chicken breasts and a pound of ground beef/ turkey in the freezer (take out of original packaging, put in freezer friendly ziplocks, save as thin as possible for space concerns and also ease of defrosting), and even a sort-of stocked pantry, you'll have the ability to "wing it"/ get creative/ bail yourself out in a pinch (my dinner last night: my "emergency lazy food" package of herb and butter Rice a Roni with sliced chicken breast. Not a restaurant replacement but it was fast and I saved myself $20).

Try to always have some basics on hand. Whatever your "basics" wind up being, that will be personal based on your taste and your easy go-tos. For us, it's rice and tortillas (married to a Central American, my favorite food is Mexican, so your mileage may vary, most people seem to gravitate to bread and pasta). We always have a couple different kinds of shredded cheese on hand. Ditto with sour cream-- there's always at least some in the house. We always get a package of spinach, green onions and a lot of limes at the store (and often some extra red peppers) because we've found we use them up every time. We also make sure that the onion, garlic and egg reserves never go down (these items keep for weeks if stored properly). Oh, and canned tomatoes and black beans. Always have a ton of those. I have a lot of homemade chicken stock in the freezer (whenever I make a whole chicken, I put the bones and vegetable scraps in the slow cooker for 12 hours. Boom. Chicken broth), but you could keep canned on hand or "better than bouillon". This helps with soup and also adding flavor to whatever you're cooking. We've got a nice collection of spices and oils and vinegars which helps. Most of this keeps for a long time and can be morphed into anything AND goes well with our standard go-tos.

Once you get your basics to where you like them, you'll start to feel a bit silly going out to get X because it's really just ABC mixed together and you've got A and B in the home and you could pick up C right now for $2 AND yours tastes better. It's also fun and a challenge to learn new things and even more fun to follow a recipe exactly the first time and then make it yours the second. Also, give yourself a bit of leeway. This is "never eat out again" this is "stop paying 10x the price for something I can easily make at home, probably better". You love Indian? Go for it. Top notch sushi? Cool. But you do not need a $20 hamburger. Or Tex-Mex (authentic Mexican food is certainly something worth spending on). Or...whatever.

For inspiration, and bang-up awesome recipes, can't go wrong with America's Test Kitchen. Get a trial subscription or ask for one for the holidays.

Oh, also (sorry, I'm rambling). BUY GOOD SALT. Forget anything iodized. You don't have to break the bank but get some descent fleur de sel. Then don't be afraid to use it. Keep it in something like this, right by where you cook. Go talk to the people at the fancy salt store linked here. They'll back me up on this. Part of why you crave eating out so much is because they season their food properly and there is a 90% chance that you do not (most people don't, from a fear-of-salt thing from the 60s/70s that was the low fat diet scam of its day). You're addicted, basically. A couple weeks of home cooking will break that, especially if you're providing yourself a good substitute. Salt is not evil, and I can guarantee you that even if you feel like you're using a heavy hand in your kitchen, you probably won't be using as much as restaurants anyway.

You need to acquire a kombucha scoby first. You can buy it online or grow one from a bottle. For me, what I did was get a bottle of original GT (the silver and blue bottle, it's unflavored. You must use original/unflavored) and pour everything out into a quart-sized jar. When purchasing, look for a bottle with the most amount of yeast strands inside. They are on the bottom of the bottle. The bigger the clump of strands, the better it is for brewing kombucha. Some people say you cannot brew kombucha with a regular bottle of GT since they changed the formulation a few years ago, but I did in Februrary. I like to think it's because I grabbed the one with the biggest/most yeast strands LOL. When growing the scoby, you can use a smaller cup than a quart-sized jar, but be mindful that the scoby will grow on the top so if you use a small cup, the scoby will be small. I kept it on the counter, covered with a tightly-woven cloth and rubber band for until it grew about 1/4" thick. Here's a video in case anyone is more visual

You will need a 1 gallon jar (or two gallon, but standard is 1 gallon), tea, and sugar. I use only plain green tea (no flavors since flavored might induce mold) and white sugar. Some people highly recommend organic sugar. RecipeMake sure the tea is COMPLETELY cool before adding it into the jar. If it is hot, it may kill your scoby. All tea + sugar that touches the scoby must be room temperature.

Keep the kombucha covered with a tightly-woven cloth (no lid) with rubber band and in the dark preferably away from chemicals. It takes about 10-15 days or longer to brew usually, but it can be as short as 5 days or as long as 3 weeks. It all depends on how strong the scoby is. If you want to taste it, get a straw and put it in to take a sip underneath the scoby. Don't be alarmed if the scoby falls down if you do this (it acts like a barrier) because it will either rise up again OR form a new scoby on top. If the brew tastes too sweet, it needs to ferment longer. If it tastes very watery, don't fret, it sometimes goes through a weird VERY watery stage during fermentation....it simply needs to ferment more.

The reason why I recommend a 2 gallon jar is if you intend to brew seriously (more than 6 months) as you brew, the scoby will get thicker and thicker. Each new batch will also lead to a formation of a new scoby on top. After a lot of research, I decided that it wouldn't be good for me to touch the scobies in fear of contamination so I leave all the scobies inside of the jar. As you can imagine, it takes up a sizable amount of room after a while (1/4 of my 1-gallon jar is scobies!). I do need to repot at least 1 in a scoby hotel in case anything happens, but that's just a backup if my kombucha gets moldy (very rare due to acidity levels).

I bought an auto-siphon for bottling. I highly recommend it. It keeps everything much more sanitary when bottling and is easy. For my first batch, I tried to pour the kombucha in my 1-gallon jar into a bottle using a funnel. It was a REAL pain. Would never do it again. Here's a link to the auto-siphon and a video so you can see how amazing it is. Autosiphon However.... if you want to save money and buy the exact SAME thing for slightly cheaper ($16.95 currently with free shipping), buy it here. You want to get the Size: Mini 3/8", No Clamp, and "Add 5." The Add 5 is 5 feet of tubing so when you get it, I recommend cutting it in half to be 2-2.5 feet of tubing.

For the 2nd fermentation to create carbonation, which isn't necessary but some prefer it, I buy swing-top bottles. I bought mines at TJ Maxx for about $2 each (1 Liter since that's all they had). It might seem difficult to open if you don't know how to, but once you know how, it's super easy.

Sorry if this seems a bit out of order, but I hope I explained a lot. Kombucha Kamp is a great resource and I do believe in not refrigerating scobies. If you take a break from brewing, just add some fresh tea + sugar (same ratio as making kombucha) and let it sit, checking up on it every so often to make sure it doesn't evaporate. I've done it personally for about 2 months and my kombucha was fine (took about 5 days longer to brew, but its fine). I wouldn't refrigerate the scoby because I heard it can grow mold if you do. By the way, mold is fuzzy, green, or black. If you have any concerns about it being moldy, please look at pictures online of kombucha scobies before throwing a batch out. When I first started, the early formations of scoby (blotchy on the surface) made me think it was molded, but it wasn't :)

You may get a dud batch or two taste-wise. If this happens, just remove about 50-75% of the liquid and put new tea+sugar water. Practice makes perfect, yet sometimes humidity/temperature levels can cause a dud (strong sulfur taste... thankfully it was just one batch).

I hope this helps! There are so many resources online and once you get it started, it's as easy as just refilling the 1 gallon (or 2 gallon) jar with more tea+sugar water and waiting for it to ferment.

---**edited to replace cheesecloth with tightly-woven cloth. Personally, I use a tea towel. A cheesecloth may have holes big enough to allow fruit flies to come in. Also added that all tea (tea+ sugar) that will be contact with the kombucha scoby must be cooled down to room temperature or it may kill the scoby.

They're not that far between. And frankly, instead of the one you're pointing to, I would go for one of these instead(though there's no variety there, which seems to be what you're looking for...)

That $100 one you pointed to is kinda alright, but really, IMO the G2's and the Black pearls are really poor smokes. Like I couldn't finish the Pearls I've had and the G2 I smoked was finished only because it was going to be my last smoke for a week or two, so I wanted to savor every last moment. I definitely wouldn't go back.

If I was you, I would get a Bally 100-ct humidor or even this smaller Capri and then get a nice sampler from Famous-Smoke (who I find to have much better samplers) (or get one of CI's nicer samplers cheaper on cigarbid.com

Something like one of the Famous Smoke Best of Samplers. From that bunch, I think the Best of Dominican, the Best of Medium Bodied or the Best of Full Bodied selections are pretty damn great. (Also check out the Best of Camaroon or Best of Habano samplers... good stuff in there. However, I have been enjoying this 2010 Awards Sampler from cigar.com that has a wide selection of mild to full, small to big smokes. That might actually be a great starting place, though I really would recommend that, if you go with that one, you append it with a couple singles of Arturo Fuente Short Stories and a couple Padron 2000's in both natural and maduro.

Hope that helps. Typically, though, those humi+cigar deals are filled with house-brand filler smokes and it's not actually as good a deal as it seems. Your call.

u/Eldridge33 · 3 pointsr/cigars

This is off the topic, but just as a side thought:

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to storing sticks, but if I may - as a new smoker too - Read over this. This was my experience.

" I've literally smoked a handful of cigars up to this point. All came from the local B&M and have been great. Super knowledgeable, helpful bunch of guys, that weren't rude to dude "wet behind the ears".

I enjoy the hobby, a lot.

I got a humidor, couldn't regulate it very well (50 count humi at $50, and only gave it 2 weeks), got frustrated with it, returned it and went the tuppedor route.

All seems really well with my tuppedor set up.

  1. Cigar Oasis Caliber IV Hygrometer
  2. 2 Cedar Trays
  3. 1 Sistema 1870 Klip It
  4. 2 Boveda 69% (60g)

I let the tuppedor do its thing with only the trays, bovedas, and Hygrometer (no cigars) in it for a day - it settled at 72 degrees / 69 RH in no time. This is a set it and forget it solution. I love it!"

As someone new to the hobby I would recommend saving yourself some time and frustration. I know you have already purchased the humidor and its on the way, but if at all possible, you may just consider the Tupperdor route. Switching how I stored my cigars freed my mind and allows me to focus on whats really important - researching good sticks and enjoying them. Two weeks was a long time for me to constantly think about and attempt to season my humidor. And i researched and cross referenced everything on line and at my local B&M. The owners (three dudes) at my local shop all highly recommended the tupperdor route. These are guys who have been smoking cigars longer than I have been alive (30+ yrs).

The owner said this to me (paraphrasing):

"It isn't about having a fancy storage case. Its about enjoying time spent with good people. If someone gives you sh*t about how you store your cigars, but either they don't know what they are talking about, or they are an a**hole and you shouldn't waste your time on em. I've been using tupperware for over 10 years, and I'll never go back. Now --- if the president came over, then I may spring for a fancy box!"

    Just a thought.

First off, happy belated cake day!

Secondly, wow! Those are absolutely amazing! It's really cool to see the talents of RAoAers, and even more cool that you're sharing it with us. Handmade gifts are honestly the best.

I'm seeing a few ideas for Harry Potter houses. My idea is kind of similar, but what about Game of Thrones houses? I've met a few people on RAoA who are Game of Thrones fans, so it would be cool to see the house sigils on glasses. The two main houses in Game of Thrones are House Stark & House Lannister.

As for my favorite etched glass design on Amazon, it would definitely have to be this unicorn paperweight, because well unicorns are the shit!

Thank you for hosting this awesome contest, have a great time in Germany!

Oh, that is such a cute toy! I wanted to get Bug one of those butterfly in a jar toys but I think she would like your one better since she could actually smack it.

Bug doesn't go outside either, and she is kind of a shit hunter. Like she will stalk things and smack them to stun them, then loaf on top of them. In the summer we get cockroaches that come in through the garage, so if you see her loafing in front of the garage door, you know it's time to get the broom out. :( We always yell at her, "Oh gawd Buggle, I hope you didn't find anything!" when she does that, lol. We get huntsman spiders too sometimes (fucking facehugger monsters, ugh!) and she will follow them around, but is too afraid to actually catch them. Once a lizard got in though, and she REALLY wanted to eat that, but we got it out first. She likes beetles though. She will just put her paw on top of them and just loaf there. It's weird.

Link me when/if you upload a video of Savannah with that butterfly toy! I bet it's adorable. Bug's favorite toy is a small red lobster with crinkly plastic inside.

Thank you about Bug's gorgeousness! Savannah is really pretty too. Bug is such a goober though. She may look dignified (sometimes), but I assure you, she is not.

For the sweet tooth (like my dad, these are all things he likes):

  • A candy jar or bowl filled with her favorite candy.

  • An artisan ice cream scoop.

  • An ice cream maker. You could get an ice cream recipe book as well.

  • One of my dad's favorite gifts was a sugar dispenser... I think that shows his level of sugar commitment.

  • Some artisan marshmallows.

  • A milk frother that doubles as a hot chocolate maker.

For the executive (like my mom, these are all things she likes):

  • A high quality thermos for coffee on the way to work.

  • A smart home setup, maybe an echo and some smart outlets or the google home. Really good for turning lights on/off, asking for the weather and news, listening to music, etc.

  • A FitBit to help her keep healthy even working long hours.

  • A popcorn maker that allows you to make non-microwaved popcorn in the microwave.

  • A white noise machine. If she has any trouble sleeping this thing is AMAZING.

  • A Roku or Chromecast that makes it easier to watch Netflix on the TV.

  • Wine tasting or cooking class that you can do together. Really my mom loves doing stuff with her family.

  1. Humans perplex me. By my silver scales, if it is not shootings, in an uncommon place... it's strangulation in a... what do you homo sapiens call that piece of literature... Ah, " Stepford like " community of an elderly woman, only for the executioner to be found, in his truck, dead by his own hands and bullet. Even more baffling? Taking plastic men modelled after a 'Controversial' Television show off the shelves of a toystore due to an mollycoddling child bearer. This whole thing is... monotonous at best. Why do you creatures let such things transpire? You cease to amaze me.

  2. I really. REALLY. REAAALLLYY want this book. I know it's not out yet, but if that is a problem I would love love love these book ends!

  3. RAAAAAAAAAAWWRRRRR.
  4. That is fine, but as much as I would love the software... the book/bookends are wanted badly/kinda needed. X_X
  5. Okay!

  6. WOOOO!

This is a pretty good humidor for only around $40 with shipping.

As far as Cutters i'd suggest staying away from the cheap ones (you'll be constantly replacing them), and picking up a nice Xikar, I'm partial to the Xikar V-Cut

As for cigars, I'd suggest checking out some of the samplers on sites like Smallbatchcigars.com, cheaphumidors.com, cigar.com, cigarsinternational.com and even cigarbid.com, It may seem a bit daunting at first, but many sites will have a flavor profile and strength indication for the cigar, as well as a blurb about what to expect and customer reviews. One thing to be mindful of is over-inflated prices on the Ghurka line, you'll see sites advertising them as 90% off MSRP! but still like $60 a box, most people here will be more than happy to share their hate for Gurkha with you, and to be honest there are only a handful of good cigars from them imo.

Decorate already! These books ends would look wonderful and go well with the decor you already brought in. I think that This little guy would look simply adorable keeping an eye on your computer desk. I love black cats and books so if you do too this trinket box might work out well. Could we request a GC? I am saving for a vaccum otherwise surprise me, I wish you the best of luck finding some things for your desk/office area.

I don't think it is easily available in India. This is pretty awesome gift for kids and adults also enjoy it a lot.

The 7 Liter (236oz) (7.4qt) (42 cup) Sistema almost perfectly fits the 2 cedar trays that I got from Amazon. I was very pleased with it. The container goes by many names - I've literally seen it go by each of those unit of measures. Amazon has it for like $36 which is crazy. I had Walmart ship me one but they sent a 5 liter by accident and think the item listing is incorrect about the sizing. Sistemas have a rubber gasket on the lid and 4 flip lock things to keep the lid secure.

I ended up going with the Container Store. They are not in my area so I had to buy online and pay for the shipping. They go for $12.99

I've gotten two different cedar trays from Amazon and this is the one that is a great fit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B9234HE

I've also bought https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0733TYGWX/ but the fit wasn't as good (it is a little smaller).

The one with the good fit has 2x5 of those holes in the bottom while the one that was a little smaller has 2x3 holes.

I have a little spray bottle that makes a pretty good mist while delivering a good amount of starsan. I "scientifically" determined that 3 squirts while rotating the bottle coats the entire inner surface, so I do that and then stick it on the bottle tree:

http://www.amazon.com/Beer-Bottle-Tree-45-Bottles/dp/B000OF8U76/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1368296448&sr=8-2&keywords=bottle+tree

These are sweet for saving bottles too:

http://thefastrack.ca/homebrew/

Also sierra nevada has the best bottles for reusing. They're meant for bottle carbing and the labels come off easily after a soak in warm water and oxyclean.

Has he read all of Rick Riordan's books? (I'm assuming yes, but in case not, those are super popular).

LOTR boxed set is always a great way to go.

If he likes reading, what about a set of bookends? I got a set of Harry Potter bookends for my birthday when I was 10, and I've kept them for well over a decade. It's the kind of gift you'd never buy for yourself but that you didn't know how much you wanted/will use.

Humidor + 10 cigars for $30 (This does not seem to be the same humidor, but I ordered one and I'll see just how different they are.) This one is much better quality than the first one!

This is my first humidor, and I was impressed by the quality when it arrived. I would have expected something of this quality to be too rich for my blood.

In following the advice of a reviewer, I'm currently calibrating the hygrometer with salt water in a bag, and I'll charge it up with a shot glass of water tonight!

Edit: And...my hygrometer is broken. It wasn't calibrated correctly, and the needle ceased to move (broke?) when I tried to adjust it. I've contacted the vendor to see if they'll send me a single hygrometer.

Edit2: I'm returning it to Amazon due to the broken hygrometer and buying the $30 + 10 cigars instead. Hopefully I have better luck with that one.

Sorry, should've posted this right away!

I just got the bottles from Amazon, here They're actually really small, only about half a standard shot each, but I figured its probably for the best if we don't get hammered during our session :P

Mana Potion:

  • Sprite
  • Blue Curacao
  • Dash of Peppermint Schnapps
  • Dash of Vodka

    Health Potion:

  • Cranberry Juice
  • Butterscotch Schnapps
  • Dash of Rum

The health one's a little weird, but it ends up having an interesting licorice-y flavor. I'm definitely open to suggestions on it, though! And this only took me about a half hour total to make all these. It took a slightly steady hand, but I just filled them with my little measuring cup.

    Edit: Formating

One thing that I don't see mentioned on a lot of packing lists is a hand held fan (like this). They are $1 at Dollar Tree and will save your damn life. Also I like to fan other people, they appreciate it and it's an easy way to make a friend!

I've actually got mine in an art storage box like this, I picked mine up at Hobby Lobby and used a coupon so it ended up being like $10 or less. I got it as a cheaper alternative to a train case and it's worked pretty well for me, I like it because I can close it up and move it and it keeps everything pretty safe.

My favorite thing to do to get in/out of the crowd is to team up with a friend to lead our squad. I got this massive performance fan and my friend has a spray bottle. We go through by putting hands on peoples shoulders so they know we are behind them, then we proceed to fan and spray those around us as we walk by. Has never failed, its slower but definitely not as rude plus A LOT of fun!

Also our squad is never more than 6-8 people.

Yes I got it off Amazon. The hygrometer is great and visually I like it when I peek in my office to check the humidity. Checking the trends were convient when it was settling out. Definitely recommend the 65 boveda because I started with 69 and it would fluctuate between 68-71 because of how well the systema holds humidity.

  • my mini keychain flashlight is one of the best things and very helpful for when I'm trying to key into my house when it's dark outside or looking for things in the car or really whatever. It's really bright and sturdy and you can replace the batteries.

  • phone holder thing for the car gets used literally every time I drive, two years later is still gripping onto the vent like a champ, it fits my iphone 6s but also my dad's galaxy and my brother's note, all in all a really good way to be able to see music and google maps within reach and minimize distraction.
  • I like these swing bottles that I originally bought to put my mouthwash in so it looked ~nicer~ in my bathroom, but after I ran out of mouthwash and didn't like that method, I rinsed it out and use them to hold water in beside my bed or keep water cold in the fridge, stuff like that.

I used this guy which worked soooooo much better than using the "dip a string in lighter fluid" method.

I broke the project into 4 steps:

  1. Use the Kinkajou device to score a line on the bottles.
  2. Use cut grocery bags and painters tap to cover the labels (we found out the hard way that the water part ruins labels very quickly)
  3. Do the actual cutting (AKA pour boiling water over the score line, then dip the bottle in a pitcher of ice water, repeat until it snaps at the score line)
  4. Sand with 80, 100, and 150 grit sand paper.

This was my end-result process. I tried a few different ways, but this was the most efficient. I started with about 50 bottles, and ended up with about 25, so I had about a 50% success rate, which I call a win! :D

Hey, I was looking for bookends today, and came across these -- maybe you should add them to your wish list!

I didn't get it either, at first. Why would people want to send stuff to a stranger, I wondered?

Then, after being gifted a couple times, I decided to reciprocate. I perused lists and came across someone who wanted one of my daughter's favorite books, so I sent it. The thank you message was profuse, and the recipient said she was in grad school, without a nickel, and was stressed because of finals. It had brightened her day so much.

That's when it clicked for me. "That's why people do it", I realized. It really feels good to make someone's day in an unexpected way.

u/blaaaaaargh · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I bought these, then I mixed some water, food colouring gel, and citric acid and eye dropper-ed it in. Then I dipped the cork in super glue and let it dry. I did that so the liquid wouldn't soak through the cork and discolour it.

Theeen I melted some sealing wax, dipped the cork in that and put it in the bottle and dripped (kinda) some more wax around the cork!

Hope that helps. :]

It's actually sold on Amazon! haha.

u/Sniperman · 1 pointr/cigars

they always say get the biggest humidor you can afford, that being said, amazon has some nice ones starting at around 30 bucks.

also cheaphumidors.com (reputable) has imperfect humidor sections, which has had great feedback. very small imperfections for a fairly good discount.
http://www.cheaphumidors.com/c_imperfect-humidors.html

i got mine (presidente dos by CC) at ebay for 50 dollars. love it.

reason you should get the biggest one you can afford because,
1 youll buy more than you think you will having storage.
2 should not underfill or overfill, too many cigars and they wont breathe, too little and the environment wont be ideal, can fluctuate.

ps. toss the green stuff inside the humidifer, replace with beads (NOT getl) cheaphumidors again has them, also heartfeltindustries.

pps analog hygrometers are not very good, tend not to be accurate most of the time and prolly need constant adjusting. recommend getting humidor with a digital one or eventually buying one along the line avg cost 15-20usd

This one is my first and I love it. I have put a drymistat tube in and also a digital hygrometer. Stays around 68% humidity now. Just make sure to follow the directions with the humidor in seasoning it correctly and to calibrate your hygrometer. Simple salt with water in a bag (you can find specific instructions elsewhere) is good enough.

drymistat - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QCAGM0/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

digital hygrometer - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H6CZQE/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I realize those put it above 30 bucks... But you can get the digital hygrometer and drymistat later. Just calibrate your analog hygrometer and use either distilled water or some type of "cigar juice" in the humidifier disc and it should work fine. There are a few ways to keep the humidity levels right.

If it has to be bought from amazon, my friend and I each have this one of these right now, performs quite well. However, if you can, I would actually try out cigarbid for humidors, they usually have all the standard humidors for a great price if you can pull the bid off.

Thanks! I don't really feel comfortable saying what I like about cigars yet, because I would most likely be guessing or talking out of my ass. I tend to enjoy some scotch with them, I don't know if that is any help. I have looked into some sort of storage device because I tend to smoke 1-2 on the weekends rather than mid week. [This] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TOK352/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details) was recommended in another thread I read and also looked into seasoning them correctly and keeping the humidity at a good %.

I put one of these F.e.s.s. trays on the bottom: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0733TYGWX/

And then put this one on top of it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B9234HE/

They fit perfectly in the Sistema container together. The larger one is too large to fit two, but the F.e.s.s. one is small enough to fit with it. Two Fess will work too, but the other one gives a little bit more space for larger cigars.

u/amazingtaters · 2 pointsr/cigars

I've had 2 humidors (first one gave up the ghost to an empty glass dropped by a drunk person)

  • The Capri Glass Top. I actually really liked this humidor. Nothing super special mind you, but I did the job well enough.
  • Tabacalera Perdomo 20 Count. This guy was a bit cheaper, as my budget for replacement wasn't quite what I would have liked. Got it for a good price in a freefall deal on CigarBid. I've only had it a few weeks. So far no complaints really. It holds moisture well. Not as pretty as the capri, but such is life, right? For someone who feels like they're drowning in an ocean of tobacco at 20 cigars, it does just fine.
u/kay_bizzle · 2 pointsr/cigars

I just bought this one on Amazon, and am really happy with it. Something comparable would've cost me like $100 at my local smoke shop

u/JamesSch35 · 3 pointsr/cigars

For a humidor, I would get a Sistema Container and a couple of these trays. This setup has worked great for a number of people, myself included. It seals very well.

u/rmill3r · 7 pointsr/cigars

Everyone's giving you advice about shrugging it off and going the tuppedor route, but I think the thing you're missing here is that you bought this thing and if it happened in transit then you should call them about getting a new one or at least a refund. I have this one and while its certainly nothing amazing, it's a humidor and its working just fine. I struggled with the rh at first because I simply didn't understand it but now it's fine and looks pretty classy....the only downside is that I discovered cbid, so now I have like 50 sticks coming in...for my "50"-count humidor....which is already filled with about 30.

So I've been lurking here for a while, and recently purchased this humidor. Two things I was wondering about:

  • In the thread about cigar sins, I saw several people dissing glass top humidors... Why?
  • When I first got it, I was able to get it to about 70% humidity with just distilled water. I kept a shot glass full of it as well as having some on the sponge. However, now that I've got a bunch of cigars in there, humidity can't seem to get over 60%. Even if I add water all the time. Could this be because the heat is on/it's drier in my place, or am I looking at a bad seal? Or would I be able to resolve this with a better sponge/using the humidor solution? Not really sure how to check for the cause.

    Any help would be appreciated.

For a collection that size, do you maintain an inventory list? I only keep around 350-500 cigars on hand at a time, and keep a Google Spreadsheet that shows Name/Size/Quantity/Cost for each stick in my humidor. I find that this helps me figure out what I should be ordering without having to dig through the humidor. Around 3 times a year, I'll do a complete re-inventory to make sure I've tracked everything correctly.

I use a single large Sistema container which holds 18 cedar trays (these) stacked in 3 columns of 6. It holds 448 Toro-size (6x52) cigars.

u/Spoonthetoast · 1 pointr/cigars

Now I usually cut with electric tile cutter and sand on DIY flat lap, but for someone looking to only do straight cuts and not make the glasses for sale I'd say go with one of the jigs available and then just do the hot-cold water routine, a candle or a jet butane torch over the score line.

Alternatively, you can also make a jig yourself, it's not that hard and will probably save around $30.

It's a toy

The Monarch "My Butterfly" Jar is a realistic butterfly toy that flutters around in a jar!
The Glass Butterfly Jar measures approx 17 cm x 9.5 cm x 9.5 cm
Takes 3 x AAA batteries (Included)
Simply tap the jar to activate the butterfly's realistic action. Ambient sound may also make it flutter!
Your butterfly will move for around 90 seconds, Batteries have automatic standby so no need for a power button!

We use a glass candy jar. That way you have a lid.

I got one identical to this one. It looks nice for sure, however I find it seriously leaks contrary to the “sureseal” technology. From some of the reviews people written, some people suspect the leak is due to the hydrometer not being sealed properly. I’d buy the used one if I were to re-buy this product.

This bottle is close, but it doesn't have a cork top.

These 2 are basically the exact bottles from the games, but they're incredibly tiny.
