When I read these threads, I'm reminded how fortunate I am that I had a dad who was building circuit boards for the Navy and had a soldering iron in my hand when I was 9. Thanks for the reality check. Let me offer some tips.

> Conclusion: should I invest in magnifying glasses? Do you use a magnifying glass? Also, an absurdly bright light in front of you would help.

I would resist(no pun) this as long as possible. Seems like a really good idea, ends up being a crutch that hurts you. I think once you get more acquainted with the iron, the smallness of the components will matter less. I also sometimes use a headlamp to light up specific areas. Looks kinda silly but works a treat.

> Conclusion: fix your helping hands to something. Make sure your elbows can rest on the table to keep your work steady.

Absolutely, even a couple C clamps could do the trick. That being said, I've been using adhesive putty to hold my workpieces, it's great, highly recommended.

> Conclusion: a very pointed pencil tip would help. Some people like knife tips.

I can understand why you might want this, but it's actually going to hurt more than help. A needle tip does not hold or transfer heat like a larger tip. What you'll gain in precision, you'll lose in actually being able to solder something. Instead, a knife or chisel tip(my preference) both still come to a relative point, but have enough mass and surface area to adequately heat a joint. The precision will come with practice.

> Conclusion: keep track of your components, and maybe put them immediately back in the labeled bags. Or in labelled bins.

Reading component color codes should only be a last resort, especially for small components. Even if the colors are easy to see and understand, they only tell you what the resistor should be, not what they actually are. Instead, get yourself a multimeter. Then, you can measure the actual resistance of components, saving the strain on your eyes, and arming you with advanced knowledge about the actual resistance of the component. Honestly, a multimeter is indispensable for myriad reasons, this just being one. It's the actualization of our greatest commandment, Ohm's Law. It's the tape measure of electronics.

> Conclusion: triple check your order.

Yup.

If you mean for stuff like stairs and slabs there is good magnetic tape

Installing a WiFi thermostat has been helpful. I can monitor and change the temperature settings away from home, if I need to.

Steel storage racks in my laundry room with write-on magnetic labels. I use storage cubes and a dry-erase marker on the labels in case I ever want to change anything.

Phillips Hue lighting. I thought they looked cool before buying but was hesitant to buy because it's a little pricey and I figured it would just look cool and not really be useful. But being able to dim the lights, change to any color in separate rooms, and time the lights for being away or for bedtime has been very useful to me. There are a lot of options with these.

Edit: noticed and wanted to share a few more things as I walked around my house:

Humidifier, 1+ gallon capacity. Bought one from Target and set it in the dining area. Helps a lot with static shock with the dry air in the winter time.

Glass shelving (I shop a lot through Amazon.) on the side of the bathroom sink. Small bathroom with not a lot of space, so had to get creative.

And one sort of strange improvement: adopted a dog. I have a somewhat small house and a large yard in comparison to the neighborhood and house sq footage. I started to get resentful of my yard because it's a decent amount of upkeep and I didn't even really utilize it. Adopting the dog really made me appreciate the yard more; it's great that he has a lot of space to run around.

I can personally recommend this double sided tape.

I didn't use it for this purpose but I used it to stick something to my dashboard in my car, still holding strong.

Nice work by the way :)

u/konagona · 3 pointsr/somethingimade

I regret getting the monitor I used for this because the ports on the back were sticking out like this. This made the frame maybe a half-inch deeper than it had to be.

If I was to do this again, I would pick a dell monitor that doesn't have adjacent ports like the picture. And one with USB ports built in, so when you turn off the monitor, any hardware I have plugged in (like the Raspberry Pi I used for my frame) would turn off with it.

The frame and mirror are sandwiched between the front of the frame and adhesive putty that's pressed into the corners inside the frame. I think corner braces woulda been a solution but I've already been to the local hardware store like 3 times the day I realized this.

Edit1: Actually there may be issues with Dell monitors like power timeouts and data corruption. So scratch that.

Edit2: Sounds like it's only certain Dell models that have may have this issue.

Wouldnt it be much more cost effective without losing the stickyness if I used clips like these and replacing the adhesive to make it stronger with these. I'm planning to use a flat ethernet cable like this so the clips I think should be fine. The cable length is quite long, which is why I mentioned price as I need quick a few clips.

u/segue1007 · 2 pointsr/myog

I wonder if two strips of magnetic tape in the top hem would work for the opening. It's pretty flexible, but would stiffen up a bit when stuck together, and is probably easy to roll up. I have some at work. Might try it out tomorrow.

As far as sewing skill, it's just practice. Set up the next few inches of what you're about to sew, and feed it through smoothly at a constant speed. Use something as a visual guide, either the edge of the foot, or a mark on the machine, or a piece of masking tape with a measured line drawn for your seam allowance.

If you just want sewing practice without wasting a bunch of expensive fabric, you could probably use cheap blue tarps from the hardware store. If you don't want to be wasteful, make some reusable grocery bags or something? That's an easy project to practice design, construction, top stitching, rolled hems, and handles. (Tip: Make a U-Panel style bag with a single front/bottom/back panel, and two side panels.)

u/RogerCly · 2 pointsr/ThousandSons

Hey, thanks all. The case is just a metal toolbox from home depot. (I think it's this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-20-in-Tread-Plate-Metal-Portable-Tool-Box-TB-520/202279042)

The base magnets are the cheap-o stick on magnets you can get on Amazon for pennies a piece (such as here: https://www.amazon.com/Flexible-Magnets-Magnetic-Adhesive-Backing/dp/B076DVBZTX).

I use solid resin bases from dragonforge.com (excellent), and just stick the stickers on the bottom (with a drop of super glue). I cut them to fit more on. But that's pretty much it.

u/h_1995 · 1 pointr/3DS

i bought this item https://www.amazon.com/Circle-Pad-Cover-Nintendo-Accessory-Inport/dp/B00C1XYUY6

as the circle pad silicone had begun to tore off i went to rip it from the circle pad housing. as i was thinking glue is a bad idea, i got this material https://www.amazon.com/Faber-Castell-Multipurpose-Adhesive-Non-Toxic-Removable/dp/B01DMA7QW4

good thing is this adhesive is removable (though there are some traces but can be removed easily) so that you can adjust the thickness until it feels right. the way to apply it is like applying a thermal paste, but way smaller

edit: the circle pad silicone is glued to the housing but since the silicone is flimsy, the glue is somewhat flimsy as well. should be easy to rip the silicone apart

I tried this today to test it out: double-sided tape on the back of an outdated gift card, and stuck it on the stall door. Worked like gangbusters. In fact, it all but locked me in the stall; it took an effort to get the door open.

Any sort of double-sided tape would likely work. I used Gorilla double sided tape squares, which are designed to permanently bond surfaces, so maybe I'm lucky I didn't trap myself in there.

Moving forward, I'll be keeping one of these in my wallet. I can definitely picture using it in additional, non-bathroom scenarios where I have two items that need to be attached.

u/Poke35136 · 2 pointsr/Vive

Similar for me, but I went for actual heavy duty Velcro : https://www.amazon.co.uk/VELCRO-Brand-Heavy-Duty-Stick/dp/B00186Q7XY

This stuff is amazing. I've got an old iPad pro stuck to the wall with it aswell. Tried un-velcroing it the other day and gave up. Way too powerful.

u/j0dan · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I stick them to the wall at light-switch level using these Scotch removable mounting squares. Come off nicely without damaging the paint. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00099E8DM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Always on a wall that the sun doesn't shine on and some of mine are Ecobee sensors so in a location where the motion sensor will be effective.

u/jonesRG · 1 pointr/oculus

I used these (but more like 1"x3" instead of 1"x1") for mounting my Leap to the Rift and it works perfectly.

http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Restickable-Inches-Squares-R100/dp/B0039N3QO2

u/hoopera · 1 pointr/letsplay

I went through this issue myself, and I found a pretty good solution, I think. It'll take some time to setup correctly and you'll need to do some math, but it works.

Get these: http://www.amazon.com/Removable-Mounting-Squares-squares-108/dp/B00099E8DM

When you put them on your wall, push one side down for about 30 seconds against the wall, then put a corner of the sound proofing squares and press that into the pad for about another 30 seconds. I'd recommend using 1 square for each corner. They stay in place, and come off the wall without any marks.

u/TheEchoSierra · 1 pointr/beadsprites

Any craft store (Michael's, JoAnn, the dreaded Hobby Lobby, and probably even Lowe's or Home Depot for some things) will do as well as Amazon if you can wait a few days for shipping.

I've not made keyrings yet but for magnets you'll probably want some kind of magnetic tape like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Magnum-Magnetics-Corp-Adhesive-Magnetic/dp/B00114LU8K/ref=pd_sbs_indust_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0F9T34N0C12XGK1T5QZ6

Or a magnetic sheet like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Flexible-Magnet-Adhesive-Length-rolled/dp/B005HY990G/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1404232861&sr=1-1&keywords=magnet+sheet

The adhesives on those are usually kinda crappy so I'd suggest maybe pulling the tape off and adding your own adhesive of choice.

Also the flexible magnets tend not to be super strong so you might need to use a bit more than you would think.

u/stumpdawg · 2 pointsr/Showerthoughts

ok I just googled "ipass velco", and got this

three doll hairs, free shipping(though its not prime so no 2day) a the nearest toll plaza to me is $0.55 plus gas brings it up to maybe a buck fiddy, two bucks at most. so yeah, it would be cheaper to just go to the toll plaza =D

A standard 60mm drill tip, makes a 60mm hole in your desk. I have one under my 1m mouse mat which has my keyboard, mouse and headset mix amp which cables go through to keep cables off my desk. Then I will drill another hole to the left of my peripherals for a wireless desk charger which is 60mm as well.

Another thing as some have mentioned are monitor arms, gives so much more desk room. Then another are cable clips and 3m scotch pads. These things keep cables off the floor and underneath the desk. (This is good for the cables now going through that hole you made earlier if you do do it). The 3m can then stick a USB hub under your desk to easily access a USB port to charge your stuff. Give me a second and I’ll link some of the stuff.

Yeah it is strong enough to hold with maybe a thin case, but the weight of the phone plus the fact that the coils to which the magnet stick are on the bottom 3rd of the phone make it tip over and fall as the slightest touch.

Despite this I've gotten it to work by sticking one of these on the mount.

Scotch Restickable Tabs, 1 x 1 Inches, 18 Squares (R100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0039N3QO2/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_JdCIub0SRMC5A

Its stickiness combined with the magnetic hold the phone just fine! It even works in landscape mode!

u/Redbird9346 · 2 pointsr/ipod

The microdrive can be replaced with a CF card (or SD to CF adapter). Just use some foam padding, like these mounting squares, to ensure it’s not moving around in there.

It can charge over USB. It’s actually the first iPod model that can charge over USB.

u/CwrwCymru · 1 pointr/Miata

Get some good double sided tape.

I've used this and it has held up well to the British winter so far.

To get it off cleanly just use some hot soapy water, it didn't leave a mark when I removed it before.

3M VHB tape.

>that isn't harmful to my monitors

Well, RIP then...

u/rmecav · 1 pointr/DnD

This...comes off clean too. Make sure you get the putty. Not the transparent adhesive "dots".

u/pixelprophet · 2 pointsr/functionalprint

Sure, it doesn't need to be a specific tape, but I would use a velcro style like: https://www.amazon.com/Pass-I-Pass-SunPass-Adhesive-Strips/dp/B007BH5848/

I wouldn't use a foam tape as I would be concerned it would not stand up to the heat on the back of the television over time.

3M itself just referring to the adhesion brand - but there are other options out there.

u/Jennifer_Ring · 1 pointr/ringdoorbell

Yepp! that would work. Here is one that I can personally recommend as well: https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Permanent-Outdoor-Mounting-4011-LONG/dp/B000BL5INM

u/potatosnowflake · 1 pointr/MakeupAddiction

i wasn't too worried about getting the glue off the back of the pots because i intended to glue magnets to the back anyway. there's all sorts of stuff you can use other than z palettes, have fun with it.

2 of those

Large Yellow Multipurpose Car / Household Cleaning Sponge https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01NBUA7K9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_CzRMAbA673C20

and this

Gorilla Glue 3044101 Heavy-Duty Double Sided Mounting Tape, 25.4 mm x 1.52 m https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01FMXKIOM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_hBRMAbD4G6VXX

would probably be a whole lot more comfortable if you can add your own about of foam to each section and they apply it to the headband.

u/_Fortress_ · 2 pointsr/Multicopter

Alright so a list I've put together in no particular order:

u/Travoli · 1 pointr/travel

It's really easy and inexpensive to make them. Check this out. Instead of sewing them, I used 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive and magnetic strips.

> Glue on a magnet

That's what I was thinking. Look at this and see if it might work. Should be easy to remove when you leave.

u/Atredl · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I added big feet to the bottom of mine because I got tired of the sliding and unleveled bottom. I used some permanent outdoor mounting tape to attach some egrips. The thickness of the mounting tape made sure the egrips sit taller than the useless plastic nipples on the top corners too. It's perfectly level and now a tractor couldn't slide this thing off my desk.

What you're looking for is 3M VHB tape.

You will need to clean of the residue. Try and rub/roll up what's there with the pad of your thumb. If you don't have luck, you can try alcohol and/or naptha (lighter fluid).

Once the surface is clean and dry on both the bumper and Surface, you can use an appropriate width VHB tape. It's not cheap stuff, but it's used to hold badges on cars and windows on skyscrapers. It's the right tool for the job.

u/AuelDole · 87 pointsr/Perfectfit

This might work. But IDK how easily you could remove it in the future

u/RippinTrout · 1 pointr/PipeTobacco

I've thought of simply getting some of these and making a display on a blank wall in my room by my pipe supplies. Just stick em to the wall.

u/al_kohalik · 1 pointr/gopro

don't use tape. use this. put it on the back of the display plate, press onto the wall. donzo.

u/DoctorCoup · 21 pointsr/LifeProTips

There are these really nice reusable adhesive gel mounting squares I use for posters and pictures.
Ive used the same $5ish pack for several posters and papers over the years and they don’t damage anything. They work sort of like those “sticky hands” you get in the gumball machines.

u/nrcaldwell · 3 pointsr/Abode

For indoor use I trash the Scotch double-sided tape that they provide in favor of 3M Command Strips to reduce surface damage. For my garage door I used the Scotch provided and it has worked fine.

For outdoor applications I've used Scotch Outdoor mounting tape. This stuff sticks to just about anything and doesn't come off easily.
https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Permanent-Outdoor-Mounting-4011-LONG/dp/B000BL5INM

u/whygohomie · 1 pointr/galaxynote4

I don't fully understand the problem. So apologies if these are out of left field, but magnets can work -- many contact chargers use them -- if the device has them embedded. Otherwise something like this mounting tape, cut appropriately, can hold just about anything while allowing for it to be removed.

u/CodeWookiee · 2 pointsr/metalearth

I got it on Amazon.com, as a roll of magnetic tape. I had to cut it up into appropriate length pieces, then lay it out flat and put some heavy books on it to get it to stop trying to roll back up. And then it still tried to, so I keep the sheets stored face-down when I'm not using them, and that's gotten it to flatten out better.

Here's the link to the specific magnetic tape I bought:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005HYDC68

u/Necoras · 2 pointsr/Vive

Maybe use adhesive magnetic tape? The reviews say that the hold generally sucks, but that doesn't matter if you're using rare earth magnets on the headphones rather than just a plate of non-magnetic steel.

u/Zutta · 14 pointsr/beadsprites

I use Scotch Mounting Putty. As long as you don't use too much, it comes off of walls with no residue or damage left behind.
