I think my biggest stigma with home-cooking wasn't always that cooking was hard, on the contrary I enjoy trying to make stuff myself, it was that something wouldn't come out tasty or it would be bland. Really most recipes or meal ideas aren't that hard to follow and I'm sure people on this thread will give you some good ones, but I'm going to give you some extra advice and just remind you to season your food well, like before and after cooking. If a recipe calls for like a teaspoon of cumin or whatever, try a tablespoon or more, worst case it tastes a lot like cumin, which was the point of adding it in the first place right? I even read something yesterday about how mothers in one country or another add extra seasoning to veggies for little kids because they might not like the taste of veggies the first time they have it and they slowly take away seasoning as they become accustomed to it. You don't necessarily have to measure out all these seasonings they're usually supposed to be to taste, so make sure you can taste them.

Also, short plug, there's a lot of easy ways to cook a lot of other staples and sure, you can always roast potatoes, but if you're looking for a way to bake them that doesn't take an hour and a half, these are literally the most useful cheap kitchen gadget in my kitchen, https://www.amazon.com/MyLifeUNIT-Microwave-Potato-Baked-Baking/dp/B016MC5IVK. Doesn't matter which one you get or color, make your own if you want, they're terry cloth I think, but perfect baked potato in like 5 minutes every time. We usually do sweet potatoes, but the regular ones would probably be fine too.

u/nothinbuttherain · 1 pointr/mildlyinteresting

Still possible. It requires a bit of involvement until you get to know the characteristics of your microwave, but I did my bacon microwave only for years, and it came out perfectly most of the time. I like mine with a little chew also.

I used this and later this.

You can also use a shitload of paper towels on a plate - but the cookers are a little neater to use.

IMO they worked equally well. You do need to be careful or parts of the bacon will overheat and (IMO) taste off. But that "off" taste is exactly how my wife's bacon tastes when I cook it for her in a pan - she likes it damn near burned.

Takes a bit of experimentation, but you can do half a dozen strips in around 5 min once you get the hang. Thinner bacon takes considerably less time, really thick might take a bit more. Reduced power is the key. I haven't done it that way in awhile for no particular reason, but 70-80% power is good. Depending on the thickness of the bacon, I use about .75 minutes * number of strips. Again keep an eye on it until you get a feel. 30 more seconds can make a significant difference with bacon. Also, it will cook just a little more while it cools off.

u/rharmelink · 2 pointsr/keto

Like u/Stabby313 says, you can make them at home. I do mine in the microwave -- place a Round Silicone Mat on your microwave turntable, add 7 small mounds of shredded Parmesan cheese. Nuke for 60 to 90 seconds. They'll come out malleable, but will crisp up after a minute or so.

You can also do other cheeses, baked in the oven works best. Drier cheeses work better. Most processed cheeses will just melt too easily and spread all over. Those processed cheeses have carbs anyway... :)

I recently made some crisps from Sargento Pepper Jack and Colby Jack slices. I cut them into pieces -- some as four strips, others as four squares. Then put them on a Silicone Baking Mat on a cookie sheet. 12 minutes at 350 degrees.

u/Jake-L · 33 pointsr/lifehacks

Sorry to tell you but your girlfriend definitely didn't come up with this lol

They literally sell stacking plates and trays for microwaves even have a huge range on Amazon..

Props on the 4k upvotes though, wow lol.

u/svnftgmp · 1 pointr/Paleo

Yeah, we have Wallace Farms bacon every morning. Our hack to make it easily is to use a microwave bacon plate with its lid add-on. Load it up and 4-5 min later, perfect bacon. It helps to let it sit a little after cooking too. Their beef bacon (which I didn't know was a thing before ordering from Wallace Farms) is pretty good too.

u/Clarissa-Rose · 1 pointr/Doesthisexist

Have you tried any of the fabric ones like this?:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078VCWNB3/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B078VCWNB3&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=8603503800129958834&pf_rd_r=TZQCBVMV2VF7A6EMP0WP&pd_rd_wg=68Ee4&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&pd_rd_w=ULEcI&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pd_rd_r=f9d15a4e-b79f-11e8-ac55-834a4eb79bb6

I'm guessing they can't go in an oven, but apparently they keep tortillas warm for up too an hour, so maybe I won't need to put it in there. Unless they only keep tortillas warm for up to an hour after microwaving, so maybe I could microwave the bag for a few seconds to get it up to heat, and then plop the naan in when I'm done cooking it on the stove top. Haha, honestly I'm not quite sure!

u/random_account_538 · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

Actually, it looks like the PowerCrisp works better.. I kinda just posted the link for the first bacon cooker I found. Microwaves do a decent job with bacon though cause the thin slices + high fat content.

Cooking normal food usually doesn't go well in the microwave. Things don't usually get crispy in a microwave like they would if normally cooked. You need to be careful about plastic wrap as well. If you're trying to actually cook something go for those microwave safe glass/ceramic containers and lids. Plastics will melt if left in for too long, even ones that are microwave safe can bubble.

If your water is hard, I would also advise against using it to heat up a cup of water for tea/coffee/etc. You'll eventually end up with lime deposits on the cup which are no fun to clean out.

Microwave Potato Bag - Fiesta https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004WTEGNM/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_IVHxub1S1TBAV

You need to get yourself one of these! It makes baked potatoes in the microwave in under 20 minutes, and they are perfect. Fluffy and delicious!

u/a110 · 3 pointsr/keto

What are you using to microwave it with? A regular plate? Maybe you should try this out: http://www.amazon.com/Presto-05100-PowerCrisp-microwave-cooker/dp/B00006IUWC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367506294&sr=8-1&keywords=microwave+bacon+cooker

It works pretty well, as the fat drains to the bottom of the tray. I can then just pour the fat straight into a container for storing.

I prefer using an oven to cook my bacon, but when I'm in a hurry, I microwave it using this, and it turns out pretty well (as far as microwaved bacon goes anyway).

u/lovetoloveyababy · 3 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

It's an app with discount codes for amazon. Helpful if you can find something you want. Always check to see if the item is going to be on a slow boat from China, of course. Cheers!
ETA there's nothing good through vipon, but this style works best: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XYJ3TTD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_oggKAbC6WGDER

I’m in Los Angeles. After taking another look at my lease, I can’t actually find where it was written, but I’m fairly certain we verbally discussed it. Honestly, rent being as out of control as it is, I’m not gonna fight them on it for fear of having to find another place to live.

Bummer it’s not salvageable but that’s what I suspected. Thanks for the quick reply.

Most places seem to want $200+ for the part but Amazon seems to have it for ~$50.... 75% off seems too good to be true.

u/Vespertine · 3 pointsr/ZeroWaste

Like this sort of thing?

I had no idea products like this even existed! Should have known about them years ago.

Do they allow microwaves through better than a sideplate over a bowl?

At any rate, the ones with vents would be useful for things that are supposed to have pierced cling film.

u/Lenoh · 1 pointr/Paleo

I have an awesome bacon maker that you stick in the microwave and it drains the bacon grease off as the bacon cooks

My dogs love bacon grease in their food :D

http://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Ware-Microwave-Sided-Round/dp/B00004W4UM/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1321865233&sr=8-5

u/Butiprovedthem · 2 pointsr/newzealand

It was a revelation when I tried this the first time. I grew up making bacon on the frying pan (or even in the microwave:https://www.amazon.com/WalterDrake-Microwave-Bacon-Tray/dp/B008PETRN4), but then tried bacon in the oven after hearing enough people rave about it. So easy, and cooks the bacon more evenly. Put down some baking paper and cleanup is easy.

Until you use the oven again and the elements start smoking from the bacon fat, but one thing at a time.

u/almsaysdreams · 1 pointr/Cooking

I bought a Nordicware 2 Sided Microwaveable Plate for Bacon. 3 strips in the microwave for 3 minutes and 30 seconds and it is PERFECT bacon. Way better than I have ever been able to do in a pan and it's so quick. Here is the plate on amazon.

"microwave bacon tray"

The paper towel thing works, but they don't turn out as good. If you plan on doing a lot of bacon microwaving, get one of these. If not, the paper towel thing works good enough imo

u/LinFTW · 1 pointr/videos

Yeah he should have used a tortilla warmer (http://www.amazon.com/Tortilla-Warmer-Sunface--Insulated-Camerons/dp/B00G02ZHSW), those things are awesome.

u/istartedi · 3 pointsr/Showerthoughts

Once we went microwave, we never looked back. We got a special tray that channels all the grease into one spot. It's much easier to make chewy bacon if that's what you like. Nudity is not a problem. I haven't cooked bacon in a long time though. I prefer ham.

u/chiftive · 1 pointr/90daysgoal

It's never leaked for me, although you may have a richer crust recipe than I do. While I'm passing along Useful Cheap Kitchen links:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spares2go-Universal-Teflon-Cooker-Lining/dp/B00PSLJF6Q/

You can cut it to fit your oven, and then if anything leaks or spills, you just take it out, wash it in the sink, and put it back in. And then you never have to scrub the bottom of the oven again!

u/CarlaWasThePromQueen · 0 pointsr/food

I usually bake the bacon like you described, but my new place isn't completely level and I've been too lazy to fix it. So all the grease will go to the right side of the baking sheet, so not all of it is submerged in its own rendered fat, so it cooks really uneven. So I've been using this old thing my Mom gave me that makes it so you can microwave bacon. (Not that as seen on TV piece of crap) It delivers the perfect chewiness/crispiness, and holds about 6-7 slices. about 1 minute per piece of bacon. After 6 pieces, then just add 30 seconds per piece, so usually never more than 7 1/2 minutes. It has a place where the grease drains, then I can store it easily in a separate container.

Also, I cover the bacon with a paper towel while it cooks. Not sure why, but Mom always did, so I do too.

Found it on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Ware-Microwave-Bacon-Defroster/dp/B00080QJXE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1412533344&sr=8-3&keywords=microwave+bacon

u/nomnommish · 2 pointsr/AskCulinary

Have you tried a tortilla warmer, one that looks like a pillow cushion? It is awesome.

Put your tortilla inside the cushion, and microwave for 15 seconds per tortilla.

u/funcused · -3 pointsr/AskReddit

Microwave bacon is the best, so long as you have a proper bacon tray. Place bacon on tray and cover with 3-4 layers of paper towels. Cook for 1 minute per slice to start. Check bacon, flipping paper towels at the same time. Results in nice crispy bacon with the fat drained away. Just make sure to remove the paper towels right when it's done so the grease doesn't harden and glue the paper towel to the bacon.

Had to help a guest find that on the floor the other day. He had walked right past it since he didn't know what the package looks like. Turns out it just looks like the ramen cups.

Actually those bacon trays do a pretty good job.

u/Tomasfoolery · 4 pointsr/Bacon
  1. if you freeze, slightly undercook the bacon. Place flat or sandwiched on sheets of parchment paper. Freezing works fine, especially if you don't get rid of all the fat/drippings.

  2. A fairly long time. Same with uncooked bacon. I don't have exacts, my apologies, you can probably google it, especially if you know the brand/butcher. Depends on how it was made.

  3. Something like this works great for nuclearating bacon. But it makes it VERY CRISPY and not very good for freezing in my experience.

Microwave Cover: basically is just an easy way to cover dishes in the microwave so they don't splash, without having to use paper towels

Orange Peeler: exactly what it sounds like, in that it is a device to help make the peeling of citrus less frustrating.

u/littlefave · 2 pointsr/keto

If you buy this then you can cook any bacon in the microwave! It is delicious and I can actually get it crispier without burning it using this rather than traditional methods!

u/GERONIMOOOooo___ · 2 pointsr/Cooking

It'll take experimentation, since microwave wattages can vary. Better to boil the water in the microwave, then as the noodles.

We have one of these though, and it works quite well.

u/bacitracin · 2 pointsr/keto

if i really don't have time to make breakfast, i use my microwave egg cooker for making perfectly round egg patties for english muffins ( http://www.nordicware.com/store/products/detail/microwave-eggs-n-muffin-breakfast-pan/9DF1BCFA-C0F9-102B-9706-00137233C6B0 ) and maybe my microwave bacon cooker ( http://www.amazon.com/Presto-05100-Microwave-Bacon-Cooker/dp/B00006IUWC )

I'm just going to put this here.

one of my best purchases ever...

u/theicecapsaremelting · 1 pointr/Cooking

I recommend this product. Makes perfect bacon, cleans easily. Cover with paper towel. You will get a little grease spatter but just wipe out your micro every once in a while.

u/bboyjkang · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

Aside from blocking a splatter, microwave covers seem to prevent popping.

https://www.amazon.com/Tovolo-81-10109-Collapsible-Microwave-Cover/dp/B000SOS7WG/

They help control the steam?

>keeps the inside of your microwave clean by preventing splatter.

>The vented holes allow steam to release evenly, preventing condensation.

u/alliwantforx-mas · 1 pointr/ketogains

I make this on a silicone microwave mat instead of the pie pan. It takes a minute to spread the mixture out thin ( I just use a fork to do this). Also, if I'm watching my calorie intake for the day I will sub 3 tablespoons of allwhites for the egg, and a tablespoon of pumpkin puree for the oil. Works great and cuts the calories down to about 120 calories, though it does add trace carbs (less then 1).

(I meant tergikleen) I don't know. I haven't washed any records in a month because I'm afraid to. I suppose I will start again and wash only old records till I figure out. I could have swore I didn't have any haze on the first records I did. I haven't been doing this long.

btw, I bought and received one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I1ZUVK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a circular silicone microwave mat. It says 'Red 12 inch diameter microwave mat fits most turntables' ;)

It overlaps in to the outer troughts of my oil pan. Doesn't have a center hole. I think it must be bigger than 12" diameter. I haven't measured it yet. I want to get a bigger oil pan anyway so the outer edges get more contact with the paint pad. The thickness is about right ~1/16" (?). I haven't figured out what glue I should use to attach it after I find a bigger oil pan. If you know tell me.

u/binderclips · 1 pointr/ketorecipes

Wow that's gonna be hard. You can go waay 90s, and use microwave egg poachers/bacon racks/griddle/steamer. We had one of those egg poacher things when I was a kid and it worked fine for a long time. I wouldn't expect any of those things to last forever, but they're cheap and should last you at least a couple years.

With those, obviously you could make bacon & eggs. You could also steam cauliflower for cauli mash?
