Sure thing!

The Projector is the Optoma HD25-LV... For what it's worth, I didn't pay that price for mine. Not sure why that's $1800 now. I think I paid less than $700 brand new.

Screen - Elite Screens Spectrum 125-inch motorized

Speakers - Blue Octave... I had never heard of this brand. But I had a set of older sony speakers in there before and they were sounding tinny. So, I gave these a shot. I think I got them for around $100 for the set of 8, and they have been absolutely amazing. They sound great.

Subs - I don't have links to them. But they are both Sony subs. The one I got with a 5.1 set of speakers I bought a few years ago, and the other one is the exact same thing, I picked up at an estate sale for like $12. They're behind my seats.

Receiver - Sony STRDN-850 (current)... However, this arrived today. I bought this for 2 reasons. 1) We just had a pretty big storm roll through our area over the last couple of days. There was no lightning or thunder, but the power did surge a few times while I was trying to work from home in my theater, and at one point, the receiver shut down and wouldn't come back on. Then, after a while when it did, it wouldn't output video or audio. Audio has since randomly returned, but still not outputting video. 2) We recently spent a good bit of coin on our back yard, and have a nice area to entertain, which we plan to do more often. The new receiver will allow for multiple zones, and I'm planning on putting an outdoor theater out on our new patio

Gaming PC - Ryzen 5 1600x CPU, Asus Strix B350-f motherboard,Asus Strix GTX 1070, 16gb RAM built into a Rosewill 4u server chassis. I replaced the front intake fans with these to add some character. Single 250gb NVME SSD for OS, and single 525gb SATA SSD for game storage. 20tb of drives in a Windows Spanned Volume acting as a backup for the media server.

Media Server - Dell R710 with dual xeon E-5630 CPUs, 36gb RAM. Two 128gb SSDs in RAID 1 config for OS, then 6 (soon to be 8) 5TB Seagate drives in RAID 6 for data. 20tb of potential media storage.

The rack - I actually got this for free. I work in IT and a company I was consulting for had their entire IT staff just walk out one day, which is why I was there. Apparently, they had stockpiled the previous 5 years worth of the company's hardware refreshes in this storage room. One of the things we had to oversee was a massive e-cycling job to get rid of all those old PCs and things. They were going to pay this other company we subcontracted by the pound to haul it all away, so I talked to the boss and we both agreed that anything I took was going to ultimately save them money. So, I got like 8 SSDs, about 6 i7 CPUs, some RAM, 5 monitors, and then I took that roll-around rack, and two of my teammates took these brand new Dell 4-post racks.. I didn't have room for those giant things, so I let them take those. This has been great. The only drawback is the door is warped and won't close. So, it's currently taking up space in my basement.

As for what I like... It's hard for me to pick. The projector has an amazing picture once you get it dialed in. It has several options to adjust the image, whether it be keystoning, or image shifting of some kind. So, it's not hard to get it lined up. My only complaint is that it tends to move. This room is one of our basement rooms and is right underneath our kitchen and family room on the main floor. The projector is mounted right onto the joist in that floor/theater room cieling, so when people walk through the kitchen, it tends to bounce. I find myself having to readjust it about 2-3 times per month. An annoyance at most, and not at all a negative of the projector. What I love about the projector is what a stark difference it has made. Version 0.1 of this home theater, was a white sheet hung up with thumbtacks and about a 10-year old 720p projector I won at a company auction back in 2007-2008. So, that one was on it's last legs anyway. I'm pretty sure the bulb was dying. Add that to the brand new bright bulb in the Optoma, combined with the increase in resolution... Massive improvement.

I don't have a link to the chairs, we bought them from a dealer here in town. But if I HAD to pick a favorite item in that room, it's going to be the chairs. I spent a LOT more on them than I intended to furnish that room, and they're so big, I had to take the door to the room off and cut 2 studs out of the wall to get them in there (it was a narrow door). But, they have electric reclining, which is a pretty cool feature, and they lay waaaaaay back, almost completely horizontal. The headrests are also motorized to INCLINE. So when you ARE completely reclined, you don't have to manually hold your head up to see the screen... They're soft, and warm... They'll be in my house for a long time regardless if I have a home theater or not.

The subs add an element of immersion. I've had surround sound systems for years, but never have I had the space, time, money, and patience to 'architect' it from top to bottom like this before. So, the first time I felt the bass kick really good during a movie or game, I was pretty much hooked. Speaking of immersion, I added the dynamic backlighting behind the screen last summer. It's 2 Phillips' Hue LED strips. One running the length behind the top of the screen, the other behind the bottom. I use this free software called ScreenBloom to control the color of the backlight in real time. Since everything I do is via the gaming PC anyway, I just have it run there. The creator says it will work on all movies (which it does) and most games (though I haven't found a game it didn't work on yet). It basically takes a snapshot of your screen every X miliseconds and then generalizes the color and sets the hue to the closest matching color in it's range. You can set the refresh rate for it to fit your preference, and you can also set zones. So, if you have multiple Hue lights, you can assign that light to a specific section of the screen. It's a really cool piece of software. This adds a whole new level of immersion believe it or not.

While I love my lapdesk setup, it is not anywhere NEAR where I want it to be yet. I have searched high and low for a decent 'living room' lapdesk setup for gaming and while there ARE more and more options coming, the demand just isn't high enough for companies to dedicate resources to developing for it. So, over the last 18 months, I've bought and returned about 8 or 9 different lapdesks, and finally settled on this one from iSkelter. My criteria was, it had to have room for a keyboard, mouse, and a gamepad (all seen in the pics), and it had to fit across the arms of the chair. This lapdesk by itself was sufficient, but my gripe with it was having to completely get up out of the chair to put it down when I was watching a movie, and one of the dogs wanted to get up in my lap. I wanted something to swivel into place and out of the way depending on whether or not I needed it, and I didn't want to have to get up to put it 'away'. So, after some real hard thinking and strategic google-fu for pretty much a solid month, I stumbled across this company. They make electronic attachment brackets for police and military vehicles. I looked over their components catalog and liked what I saw. So, I emailed their sales and explained what I was trying to do. Within minutes, they responded, and asked for measurements of my chair, lapdesk, etc; then within 24 hours they got back to me with a parts list. The whole mount cost about $200. But, it has worked brilliantly. Like I said, this solution isn't QUITE done yet. The mount screws into the wood lapdesk right in the center, and it's wobbly. It will suffice for now, but I'm going to keep poking at that until I get it right.

I know I didn't quite answer what I liked or what my favorite part is. But, as I said earlier, it's hard for me to pic a favorite. The whole thing has been challenging to solve a host of problems one by one, but now that it's where it is, it's all so satisfying.

Feel free to ask if y'all have anymore questions.

If you can order from IKEA, or have one nearby, I highly recommend you check them out for most of your furniture needs. You hear all the time that people hate IKEA, and how cheap their furniture feels, but I think that might be because people don't know how to take care of their furniture. You have to know the limits.

DESK: LINNMON / $45 - I've had this desk for 2 years going on 3, and have not had one single issue with it. Here is an image of it's potential.

PROJECTOR: Optoma HD142X / $545 - One of the best 1080p projectors on the market for the price. Can throw an amazing 150+ in screen size while still looking incredibly vivid and beautiful. Here is what it looks like in my current setup. Beats my 55 inch 4k TV I bought for $700.

There are also some short throw projectors that are really expensive, but if it's worth not having to mount it then it might be a good fit for you. Just note, any projector will be limited to how many devices you can hook up to it so I recommend either going with something like a chromecast, or buying a receiver to hook everything up to.

If you get a sofa from IKEA, just know that you are sacrificing a bit of comfort for aesthetics / easy setup and take down when you move. But the second part to that is important in your situation.

Most IKEA sofas are bought broken down, and you set it up at home. This makes moving them in much easier.

SOFA: FRIHETEN Sleeper sectional / $599 - This sofa is comfortable, functional, and looks really nice. I have since replaced it with a larger sectional when I moved, but here is an image of what it can look like in a space.

BED: Zinus Memory Foam 10 Inch Mattress, King / $275 - This is easily the best purchase I have made in quite some time. I was skeptical about it's price, but it is easily beyond any mattress I have ever slept on.

BEDFRAME: Really anything you like in this category, there are many options from all over the place. If you get a memory foam then a platform bed without a box spring looks sleek.

Projector: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LL2SHK6/

Attached it to the ceiling with this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IDC0K2

Projected onto this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00446MTDM/

And I just bought some big screwhooks and some chain to hang the screen, but probably would have been easier to just put these in the wall: https://www.amazon.com/Elite-Screens-L-Brackets-Spectrum-ZVMAXLB6-W/dp/B001EHAI6Y

First go.

I fiddled with the angles and aspect and eventually got the image and screen edges to lineup.

So far I love the Optoma. It is clear and bright with ambient light in the room, colors are crisp and vibrant, noise is minimal or nonexistent with media audio playing, internal speakers are not bad at all. Has four display options 16:9, 4:3, "Super Widescreen", and LGX(I think). Changing between inputs is very quick and efficient, and set-up is incredibly simple. I've got a Chromecast and Roku3 thrown into it, and will be hooking up an older Bose 3-2-1 into it once I put shelves up for the speakers.

I do wish the volume could get softer as "1" is still loud enough to be heard through closed doors. I also have had one instance of turning the projector off and then 10 seconds later just the audio kicked back on. It also puts out not a small amount of heat.

The bulb for the Epson 2040 is only $76 or and the lamp life potentially can last even longer, check out the details.

I've never heard of the Dell 1610HD but it looks pretty good. I've heard of that Carl's Place material, sounds good, I hope it'll be big enough. Sounds like it would cost more than painting it though.

Sure, I love pictures. I'm a projector enthusiast that's saving up for my first real projector (that isn't $100 chinese junk). :)

u/00raven · 1 pointr/projectors

I'd choose the HC1040. its 469 refurbished on epson.com
---
Cheaper bulbs, great color balance, longer eco lamp life, better features, decent positioning, better remote, needs AV receiver or speaker with hdmi audio passthrough or a P.C..
Gets loud using full power mode but quite quiet in eco with almost no loss to the strength of the projected image even in ambient light.

If you're using a HTPC(like an xbmc device) as the video source its a non issue.
Just need to get a screen that favours the epson in for deep black reproduction and you're set.

The HD142x will have some nice color to it but the adjustments are less intuitive, the focus wheel will get reset every time you put on the lens cap and unlike the HD141x you cannot adjust it from the top only the front which feels a bit shallow increasing the time to focus.
The emphasis on the Black levels seems to come at the expense of white reproduction and even gave other items within the image a yellow or brownish tone.
You'd need much more aggressive settings that the out of the box presets to get the accuracy you want with it.

Now objections:
Epson Powerlite HC2030 Home Cinema 2030 2D/3D 1080p 3LCD Projector (Certified Refurbished)

Price: $342.30 USD as of this post.

3.5mm Audio out included, better black levels, and comes with Amazon's warranty if you really don't like it you have the liberty to return it vs CL.

Hi everyone, I've been looking at getting a projector for a while now, and I'm extremely confused about specs and price ranges. Hoping you can clear it up for me some.

I would like to have one for gaming on my PC, as well as netflix and such. I have a fairly high end gaming rig that easily runs most games at 1080p/60fps on my monitor, and I want to be able to get the same results through a projector(60 Hz or better refresh rate).

I've looked around and found a number of different projectors at quite different price points. I am hoping to stay under $1000 Canadian.

Here are a few that I've found:

-Optoma HD27- $889 CAD

-Optoma HD142X- $779 CAD

-BenQ W1070- $1444 CAD

-Optoma GT1080- $787 CAD

-Epson 2040- $996 CAD

I see a lot of threads of people saying trying to get a good projector for under $1000 is not a good idea- can anyone help me out with these choices and tell me which one is best, and if I really need to spend more?

If you have any other suggestions besides the ones I've listed, please let me know! Thanks!

u/The---Technician · 2 pointsr/projectors

Since there is a lot of natural light, I recommend you go for a projector with higher lumens ( brighter).. From the list you have there, those are quite decent, but within your budget you can get a much more powerful projector in terms of brightness . This Optoma EH500 with a 4700 Lumens output is much brighter than the ones you are considering and will allow you to see just about anything projected even in bright light ( therefore, it wont limit you to having to close the windows or pull blinds each time you want to use it)... Apart from that , you plan on gaming which will require a projector with minimal lag and this one is very decent in that arena.
Please not as well that this projector because of it's extra brightness, it pushes off a little extra heat, so it would not be perfect for an extremely small room in a warm environment.

u/xamomax · 1 pointr/4kmonitors

I want to add one more thing to consider, though off topic a little: Projector.

Pros: Huge screen for reasonably cheap. I'm running about 150", and it's like having an IMAX in my living room.

Cons: Only good at night, requires a white wall to project on, takes time to "warm up".

So not good for general daily use, but great for movie night, or just watching Youtubes on the couch.

You can get 4K projectors, but they are still way too expensive ($4000 and up), but 1080p is well within your price range. I have, and really like, this 1080p projector Currently under $900. I have it hooked up to Amazon Fire TV, and a 1990's era stereo, and it really is a great theater setup.

This totally might not work for your needs, I just throw this out there as a consideration.

u/RaymondLeggs · 1 pointr/hometheater

You won't get anything super great for $200.00 and under but you can find something that can be used for fun it will not be as good as a "real" projector. though they can give you an image that's as good as your computer screen or tablet in a dark room.

They won't be good enough for the peoplaround here because most people around here are at the flagship level we're talking thousands of dollars worth of gear. Speakers that cast as much as a used car. For one speaker.

The one I will put at the top of the list IS 1080 I don't have any experience with these but plenty of youtubers tend to like these few

u/KnuckleSamich · 2 pointsr/GrandTheftAutoV

The quality in my opinion is great. I don't notice any lag at all. If you're into competitive gaming, you might notice something.

I have this projector. I got it when it was at $1200, but it has apparently gone down a lot since then. Jerks...

The main thing is light control. If you can't make your room dark enough, you won't be able to use it during the day. With this projector, I can use it in moderate light, but it's obviously better at night.

I don't even use a screen, just some 2" wide black felt tape stuck on the wall as a border. For all my purposes, it is fantastic.

I hope you've got some sweet surround sound to go with it!

u/SirMaster · 2 pointsr/projectors

I'd say the Acer H5380BD at $440 is something to consider.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009634

It's 720p, but 1080p at under $600 is just not really a thing.

If 1080p is a must then the best bets I know of would be the Acer H6510BD at $660

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-H6510BD-Theater-Projector-White/dp/B00B97ZKIA

Or the Optoma HD131Xe also at $663

http://www.amazon.com/Optoma-HD131Xe-1080p-Theater-Projector/dp/B00E4JEDWE

Or perhaps the ViewSonic PJD7820HD at $650

http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-PJD7820HD-3D-Ready-Projector-Composite/dp/B00BBM0664

But I believe the ViewSonic to be the weakest in terms of quality.

If you do have room in the budget I believe the BenQ W1070 is one of the best values and great quality for under $1000 at currently $743

http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-W1070-1080P-Theater-Projector/dp/B00A2T6X0K

I recently purchased this [projector] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E4JEDWE/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and now play it against my living room wall and it's glorious. I can see the detail so much better now... the only minor gripe is now I play 720p PS3 games from time to time and I can see major differences in detail from PS3 to PS4 that I didn't notice AS much as now. Although that isn't much of a gripe as a different system/reason why I wanted to get next gen too.

I actually want to try playing FEZ in 3D as it seems like it'd be fun in 3D. :)

u/LukeLC · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Not OP, but I personally use an older model of this one (mine's an MH630, appears to have been replaced by the MH680). Full 1080p, 3,000 lumens--it's about the cheapest thing I could find that offers that level of picture quality (there might be better, cheaper things out now though).

One thing to be careful about with projectors is that many will claim 1080p when what they really mean is they accept a 1080p input, not that they create a 1080p output. Most cheap projectors are 720p at best, and it's not unusual to find 480p. Make sure you check the actual resolution before buying.

u/cheeseguy3412 · 1 pointr/GalaxyS8

Fair enough. If I knew it was going to be coming out so soon, I probably would have gone for the Note 8, but I'm liking the S8 just fine so far.

I'm also rather liking the Dex Station so far, which I find somewhat surprising. With a 256GB SD card and 64GB onboard memory, its an amazing video player for if you have a TV / large monitor handy.

I'm actually eyeing this little toy for use with the Dex Station. https://www.amazon.com/DBPOWER-T20-Projector-Multimedia-Smartphone/dp/B01LZRUY6Q/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1504018468&sr=8-4&keywords=micro+projector

Honestly worth it to save just a little more...

Optoma UHD60 True 4K UHD Projector, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071P6KQZH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_nOnTDbSM206YR

Elite Screens Sable Frame B2, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y7XA2OA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_AQnTDbPZRZPWH

I have that setup for video. I also have a 7.1 surround but starting with the screen and a soundbar is pretty great.

•maybe not the optimal route for your needs, but as a cost effective alternative to regular road cases:

Someone had asked this recently, and was linked to some cheap gun cases with foam interiors to carry around keyboards and pedals and such.

$39 is hard to find in ATA roadie cases that size.

Another option I like are [pick and pluck foam cases](CASEMATIX Portable Projector Hard Case with Internal Customizable Diced Foam and Carrying Handle - Fits Sony Pico Mobile Projector MPCL1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0170RIRVY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_U2rEybWPD5EHY) that allow you to make custom spots for your gear.

I bought one for my Tascam DP-008ex recorder. Fits like a glove, nice and secure, and I was able to pluck out a separate spot for the cables and power brick.

I have the Optoma HD180 (out of the market for newer models)
the Optoma HD25LV
and the ML300

and I can vouch for them for movies as well as gaming.
The good thing about the ml300 is its small size but it has a max resolution of 1024x768 I think, although you can connect hdmi to it, but it's so convenient to carry around, it even fits a messenger bag without problem.

The HD25LV or similars are the popular models, being among the preferred choices for <$1000 projectors. 1080p, 3D-capable
Great image and luminosity on both.

Really depends on what you consider cheap or not. If you don't want to spend more than $100 then any highly rated Chinese projector on amazon would do, be wary of YouTube videos as most are paid adverts by the company. Just be aware that most if not all will state "supported" resolution of 1080p, but if you look at native resolution spec it's going to around 480p (native is the keyword as that is the actual resolution output). Don't expect much functionality or features like usb-c and definitely don't expect it to last. If you have been scrolling this subreddit you might have notice a lot of people requesting help for fixing their low end projectors after a slight bump or drop, etc.

If you bump your budget to $200-$300 you could pick up a Nebula Capsule you're still stuck with 480p, but you gain 4 hours battery life, android os (Apps and the ability to mirror screen), and HDMI all in the size of a soda can. If you want to project on the ceiling just pick up a gorilla pod.

u/RubberReptile · 1 pointr/ProductTesting

Omg, yes, run far away! Low native resolution, poor light output, loud... For less than $80 you can get basically the same projector bought outright, but I'd recommend getting an Epson HC2030. It's worth the extra cost for REAL full HD, better colour output, quieter operation and higher brightness (but it's $400 more lol). This is not a thing to cheap out on.

u/agray20938 · 1 pointr/hometheater

People really seem to like this Sony projector, and it's price keeps going down to a better and better deal. If you're looking for something even brighter, This Epson would work well, and both of them are around the cost you were looking at paying with the 4k tv.

u/giblethead014 · 3 pointsr/projectors

I have the Optoma HD27, throw distance of ~15-16ft (sorry, I don't remember exact, but it's close) Used it for movies at this point and it has been fantastic. I use it with a 140" and it's awesome.

I picked up one of these Casematix cases ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0170RIRVY ) to store/transport my RaspiBoy and it works great. The foam insert is customizable so I was able to create a proper space for the handheld as well as a spot for the charger. They make larger sizes than the one I bought, you should be able to find one that'd fit your needs (though maybe not including the CIB games. Maybe pick up a Mega Everdrive for gaming-on-the-go?) The case reminds me of the old VHS rental cases (though much smaller, of course), which makes me smile with nostalgia.

I have been using this one for a year and I like native 1080p to make all my videos in 1080p. For the price its the best I found. My stage is about 30 feet by 20 feet has still has tons of room. To get a better would would run 5k+. I can send you a video of my mappings if you like.

u/triedby12 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

I have nothing to say about the projector you are looking at, but I purchased the Epson Home Cinema 730HD Refurbished projector for the exact same purpose. It has been great so far. I think the projector you are looking at is only 1000 lumens, which might be to dim for outside viewing. Not sure if Vivitek makes reliable products, but if you want something to enjoy for years to come, I would chose a reputable company.

u/Jessie_James · 2 pointsr/projectors

What's your budget?

If you can afford it, I picked up this Epson and it is phenomenal:

I previously had a Panasonic PT-AX200U that was great but wore out. I also tried the Optoma GT 1080 and Optoma HD25-LV, and the Epson is way better.

u/Hopczar420 · 3 pointsr/projectors

u/wgreeley · 2 pointsr/projectors

You are going to struggle with gaming with either of these models and tv probably won’t be much better. The problem is resolution. Both projectors are 800x600 native resolution, basically standard-def tv. Imagine a computer monitor from 1998 blown up to 100” screen. Text will be unreadable and video will be blurry like tv in the 90’s.

Honestly, if you’re set on a $300 price ceiling, go off brand and look for “native resolution” of 720p, very important to look for native resolution. A listing that just says “supports 1080p” or “HD” is likely just taking about the inputs it’ll accept, not the actual projection resolution.

My advice would be to save up $200-300 more and get a baseline name brand like this one: Epson Home Cinema 1060 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073S4TS4G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_lrP8Bb3NAH9YJ

If that’s totally out of price range, there’s always the used market. Just look for a lightly used one so the bulb isn’t worn. They are expensive to replace.

u/SumoSizeIt · 2 pointsr/Monitors

Interesting, this is significantly cheaper than some of the other native 1080p, high lumen projectors I've seen. At best I've seen some Optoma and Panasonics for ~1200-1800. In general, it's been difficult to find high lumen, high res projectors under $2k.

Here's the list prior to your suggestion:

1. Optoma Technology UHD60 - $1800

  • 2160p Resolution
  • 3000 lumen
  • 2xHDMI/1xVGA

    2. Optoma EH500 - $1130

  • True 1080p
  • 4700 Lumen
  • 2xHDMI/2xVGA/1x DisplayPort

    3. Panasonic PT-VZ580U - $1200

  • True 1080p
  • 5000 Lumen
  • 2xHDMI/2xVGA

    4. Optoma X600 - $1256

  • 1024x768 native/1080p emulated
  • 6000 Lumen
  • 2xHDMI/2xVGA/1x DisplayPort

Thanks for the advice! I'd obviously rather not drop $300 on something so bad its unusable. I'll keep an eye on that one and maybe this? for black friday. I read on a forum that the Optoma is pretty good. Would you lean toward the Epson?

u/prodical · 1 pointr/buildapc

Would a USB dongle like this not do a decent job? I certainly do want a very stable connection with good speed since I get 110mbps DL. I will swap to the better MOBO if a dongle isnt good enough.

And this: http://www.amazon.com/PCMD-Projector-Ceiling-Optoma-HD131X/dp/B00BRQ900C/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_y

Mount it basically above where you were standing taking the picture.

On wall that size and from that distance (guessing 14 feet) you should get a crystal clear 120" picture.

Toss out your tv/move it to bedroom.

While a screen would be ideal the blank white wall should be sufficient to give you a fantastic picture.

Yes, I agree it's poorly described, but in the details it says it's increased 10% over last year's model (I'm guessing 1800 to 2000 lumens). It also has almost 1000 reviews, 4.5 stars, and is an 'Amazon's Choice' product so I'm sure it's not complete garbage.

Personally I have this one which does the job quite nicely.

Here is a layout of the area with my proposed plan. My basement has very nice 10' ceilings and I'm excited about the possibilities. I added a nice big remnant of carpet and hung a large projector screen in one end of the basement. I have been framing walls and running wires, now I just need to pull the trigger on a receiver, speakers and projector. I have an old projector but the pixels are dying and it's pretty crap-quality.

u/uniquepassword · 1 pointr/sysadmin

you'ld need about 100 lumens for a decent sized dark room pico projector, with lights on it should offer still a pretty bright picture..anything less will be harder to view, even in dim light rooms.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005Q2EGG6

this is a pretty good one but remember, mini/micro/pico projectors are going to be costly the more bells and whistles you look for (this one has 400 lumens) but look at resolution, anything that small won't work well in places like board rooms or giant conference rooms...if you look for a higher resolution expect the price to increase exponentially..

u/juttep1 · 2 pointsr/projectors

Okay, a wall is fine. You're not going for hyper clarity or amazingly dark blacks. A screen will only make it better but you can def suffice without one.

I have an epson 2030
that I bought refurbished from Amazon for <$500. That with a simple sound bar and subwoofer make up my every day use projector. I wouldn't shrink too far below that price range as anything less than that is likely old or too bad to be able to use. I'd also recommend an LED one as bulbs last waaaaaaay longer.

It sounds like you may be underestimating how bad cheap projectors can be. I'd highly suggest a trip to a home theater store or even a Best Buy. See if they can give you a tutorial or a demonstration of the selection of projectors they have there (some stores will have them set up so you can experience it in real life)

The 5030UB is the updated version of the 5020UB and is actually a bit cheaper. Projector Central also just yesterday updated their comparison between the HW40ES and the 5030UB.

> The bottom line is this: the Epson 5030UB is an excellent projector, and the HW40ES cannot match its placement flexibility or deep black levels in the darkest scenes. However, in situations where the additional zoom or lens shift of the 5030UB are not needed, the HW40ES has a brighter picture with excellent detail and less digital noise that is also higher in contrast in most scenes. A quieter fan also makes the HW40ES the go-to choice for smaller rooms.

Either one is a solid choice, and they are both rated for 5000 hours eco mode life.

> The Epson 5030UB is capable of deeper blacks in dark scenes thanks to its automatic iris, but scenes with a higher average illumination are higher in contrast on the HW40ES. There is a slight delay in iris adjustment when the 5030UB suddenly switches between bright and dark scenes, and this can occasionally cause a distracting "flicker" artifact that is never seen on the HW40ES due to that projector's lack of an auto-iris.

I know for me with my PT-AE4000 I rarely think "man I wish this bright scene was a bit punchier" but often think "man, that black level could really be so much better." It's hard to compare picture quality without having a reference, but if you have a black border around the screen you'll always notice the projected image is brighter than that. Ergo, I would probably lean towards the 5030UB.

You may also want to consider some of the JVC units, though they really start at $3500+

u/Bl8_m8 · 2 pointsr/linuxquestions

I will try to change channel first, then. The dongle will probably be a must-buy, if having a 2.4 Ghz network card is so crippling in densely populated areas (I mean, London lol). Thank you with the router reccomendations as well.

Would something like this be okay? (First result on Amazon)

u/sotodefonk · 3 pointsr/projectors

no, thats white van scam trash. Anything under 300 will be hard to get a good projector.

If you can save a bit more, for 349 dollars you can get an Epson Home Cinema 730HD Refurbished. That projector is 720p and with 3000 lumens is pretty good. It also has HDMI.

You mention you dont need HD, there are several projectors with SVGA resolution and 2000+ lumens from reputable brands for 300 or less on amazon. Just buy from a known brand.

u/jupiterkansas · 3 pointsr/hometheater

My experience is that the cheaper projectors are meant for computers doing PowerPoint presentations and the like. They're not designed for watching movies or TV. They have terrible colors, nothing close to true black, and aren't very bright. You're going to be very disappointed if you're just trying to save a few bucks (although the image in your pic just looks defective)

For a home theatre projector you have to spend a little more. You want at least 1080p and a 10,000:1 contrast - something like this $500 Benq projector or this one that I have.

You could try a 720p projector but I don't really see the point since blurays, broadcast, and most streaming is 1080p now and just getting better. Resolution makes a real difference when projecting, and the cost difference isn't enough to worry about.

Let's see,

  1. I bought SurlyGoodDesign tokens off Etsy and I've generally liked those. Dude sent me some wrong tokens by mistake and immediately responded to my message and sent out the correct ones.
  2. I bought CurledPawCreative templates off of Etsy and those have been really nice. You have to paint them yourself but they come with tape attached so you just have to paint how you want, let it dry, then remove the tape and you're good to go. Tied to this I bought the HighbridgeDesign template tray holder (with the magnetized lid) and tournament tray that all packs up nicely.
  3. I've bought the deluxe movement dials just because they stack on top of each other nicely. Purely cosmetic
  4. My game mat is one of the FFG ones. As long as the whole thing isn't covered in crazy designs then it's not really distracting imo.
  5. I have some larger Stanley organizers for and a basic cheap card box for storing things at home. When I'm actually going somewhere I have a backpack I keep stuff in. It has the following stuff in it:
    1. Hardcase with customizable foam and affordable that I keep my Republic stuff in, including bases and movement dials
    2. Feldherr box for my rebel stuff, including bases and movement dials. This is smaller than the thing above though. The specific one I bought is one that holds the Falcon but it's no longer sold on Amazon at least. But really any of them can work.
    3. The HighbridgeDesign template and tournament trays.
    4. Card Box that has my sleeved cards, obstacles, medium bases, damage deck, and then also contains smaller plastic containers that have my dice, various other cardboard tokens, ship indicators, and my normal tokens.
      1. Token Storage
      2. Dice Storage and misc cardboard

All that said, my setup time is not super quick but I can take quite a lot with me and it's just lugging around a backpack.

As someone who stays in a hotel 4 nights a week, I gave up on relying on the hotel TVs from having the ability to utilize an open hdmi port and got myself a nebula projector and tripod.

It’s about the size of a coke can and runs android tv os so I’ve got Netflix, Hulu, dtvNow etc. It also supports airplay and what ever android calls it’s version. I use it as a second monitor when I work from the hotel.

I also picked up s micro router for those hotels who have Ethernet in the room. No more signing into 10 diff devices, and now airplay works.

I’ll edit later with links.

I had this one.

It worked amazing for 3 years and then after the warranty expired, it stopped working. However, the picture is bright as hell, the quality is pretty damn good, and it has a battery for it if you need it to be portable. The user interface could be a bit better but it does everything you'd need. HDMI, VGA, Composite A/V connections along with microSD and USB readers. I used it on just plain white walls or a sheet if I took it somewhere and it looked good.

Highly recommend if you buy it with the expectation it could die in 3 years. Not sure if mine was an outlier or if it's planned obsolescence.

With a 4K projector so cheap, I'm thinking things are going to get a bit cheaper for both 4k and 1080p, being that the gap between 1080p and 4k is closing.

There is that Anker can shaped battery operated combo projector, android device and speaker. That plus a basic screen and you're good to go.

Seconded, I have an Epson 5030ub projector and an HDMI switcher so all my inputs' audio go through Sonos. Works a treat.

I actually have two of these, that I use for outdoor movies and we use for spontaneous "go play your games in the other room!" nights. https://www.amazon.com/DBPOWER-T20-Projector-Multimedia-Smartphone/dp/B01LZRUY6Q $60 gets you out the door for 1080p gaming and movies.

u/Ba11erOnABudget · 1 pointr/projectors

Yeah there really is a lot to look into and so far has been very overwhelming.

As far as 3D capability, it isn't really a deal breaker for me but it doesn't hurt to have either. The Optoma HD25 has been replaced with a 26 model and seems to be priced in the same range according to amazon. However both models show (at least according to the calculators scale if I read it right) to have some compatibility concerns with the throwing distance and the size I'd be able to achieve.

u/chunkmcrunfast · 2 pointsr/pocketoperators

I’ve got all 9 stuffed into this puppy. Looks like it’s not for sale now?

Pics are here. I’ve got a little room at the front for cables and such too.

Edit to fix link.

u/drashna · 2 pointsr/ergodox

I .... bought an orthodox (and then an Iris) because of this. :)

That said, a pelican case or the like would work for this.

Or... somebody linked this a while ago: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0170RIRVY/

u/LatvianResistance · 1 pointr/OP1users

I was consistently disappointed by the rather expensive hardcases for the OP-1 that didn't look like they would protect my $950 investment properly.. So I did some searching on Amazon and found this lil diddly for a mere $25! Fits like a glove and is still compact enough to put in my backpack.

Nah, short throw is like 4ft or less.

If you don't mind refurbished, look at the Epson 730HD (gives you ~110" from 12ft).

u/digitalaudiotape · 1 pointr/PrimeDay2016

I'm in the same boat. I haven't found any prime day projector deals so far.

EDIT

Actually there seems to be a few projectors available. I did a search for Electronics over $200 on the Prime Day home page and found these:

Not sure which ones are worthwhile though. Trying to figure that out now.

u/tongpoe · 1 pointr/hometheater

I just bought one of these for that exact purpose. Work good enough. Note: it's not 1080p but that didn't matter for me: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LZRUY6Q/ref=ya_aw_oh_bia_dp?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Whats your budget? I have this in my home theatre and I would recommend it fully, but it is kinda pricey.

u/TheMorningstar007 · 4 pointsr/shrooms

It's a Vankyo Leisure 3, I got it off Amazon for 80 bucks: https://www.amazon.com/Leisure-Upgraded-Portable-Projector-Compatible/dp/B078KF8CSX

u/mr_white79 · 2 pointsr/projectors

Reviews are easy to fake on Amazon. It's a piece of junk. 480p resolution is the only spec you need to know.

> Dont waste your time, portable projectors are awful

There are decent portable projectors, they just aren't cheap. For example this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Projector-Anker-Portable-High-Contrast-Playtime/dp/B076Q3GBJK/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1538680819&sr=1-5&refinements=p_n_feature_browse-bin%3A6998472011%2Cp_n_feature_fifteen_browse-bin%3A13670061011%2Cp_36%3A30000-99999999

Obviously there are limitations, but saying they're universally awful is overselling it. I have one of a brand I can't remember off the top of my head that's like 4 years old now and sold for close to $500 that I've used in a modestly lit room for a table to people to collaborate over and it worked well.

u/kodt · 3 pointsr/hometheater

There are ultra short throw projectors that only need to be 10-15 inches in front of the screen or so. But they are expensive and really can't compete with a traditional ceiling mounted projector in terms of quality, especially at that price point.

Here is an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSBRYZL/ref=psdc_300334_t1_B014OUD5KS

There are also regular short throw projectors, which are designed to sit on a coffee table in the middle of the room. These would be much more affordable.

u/neuromonkey · 2 pointsr/gadgets

IS it the HD25-LV? New, that's a $1200 item.

If it's one of their ~$400 models, it can't compete with a plasma screen.

u/pandaeatbambo0 · 16 pointsr/Coachella

I did buy a portable projector but imma use it more for a personal turndown tent.

GoT is on Sunday. Just live out Coachella's last night, and watch it at a civilized location on Monday night.

u/Knoxie_89 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

It's a little rough around the edges as far as cabling goes, but I'm not 100% set on where my gear is going to go. For now its on a bookshelf opposite the screen. Once I use the room a bit and get a feel for things I'll move the outlet closer to the projector and fish a HDMI cable through the wall/ceiling instead of going across the ceiling.

If you push your budget.. The Epson 5030 shows up. And pushes 1000 lumes more than the sony.

u/lolwally · 1 pointr/projectors

I would be looking into 4k. No sense spending 9k on a theater room where you will be unhappy with the projector 3 years from now.

If I were to purchase a new projector today, it would be the Optoma UHD60 or UHD65 $1999 and $2500. Im holding on to my 1080p projector for another year or so, with the hope that home 4k projectors break the $1000 - $1200 range.

Or if you really want to hit your 9k budget grab the new Optoma 4k500 projector.

Ohhh mate, this is easily the projector you want: http://www.amazon.com/Optoma-HD25-LV-1080p-Theater-Projector/dp/B00BQWX1P2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1418022149&sr=8-3&keywords=optoma

I got it about a year ago and was really skeptical about it (I thought "no way could a projector be as good as a tv") and now it's completely replaced my tv. I use it almost all day.

u/canada_dry99 · 1 pointr/projectors

Why not just a TV? For that price you are looking at cheaper quality no name projectors (or used) but you need a short throw projector that a tiny size, and that runs on battery??

Basically you are looking at 720p or 1080p resolution.

i got the 3M projector with roku when it was on sale for 170$. imo its not at all worth it at its regular 300 so it was a steal. only watchable in the dark. this one is what you would have to get for daytime viewing

u/nonameowns · 1 pointr/technology

cheap shit projectors require no light duh

midrange can have some lights on and top of the line can have more

how is that different than someone walking in front of the box tv?
