Here are my thoughts:

  • HomeKit is definitely the correct choice for ease of use and privacy
  • plugs are easy to install, can be used for a variety of things, do not require any modification of the home, and doesn't introduce confusion with wall light switches. My recommendations are the Satechi Dual Smart Plug (two- smart outlets that don't block an outlet and monitoring) and the VOCOlinc SmartBar (cheaper and doesn't block an outlet, but only one smart outlet)
  • get smart bulbs if you don't want to mess with wiring. The HUE are probably the best, and the IKEA are probably a more attractive price. Don't get too many color bulbs until you try one. The use of color in bulbs grows old after three days of "coolness". Wi-Fi bulbs will not require a bridge from the manufacturer. HOWEVER, you may want to consider something with bridge (like the HUE or IKEA). The bridge will have better performance due to how HomeKit communications work, and it might be better if you are in an apartment with congested Wi-Fi signals
  • The Lutron Caseta Wireless Smart Lighting Lamp Dimmeris plugs into your outlet for connecting lamps that you want to dim
  • If you don't mind wiring, (its so easy to do that you could easily remove them when you move out) I highly recommend the Lutron Caseta Wireless Smart Dimmer Switch. Rock solid and fast and easy to install. Its the best for lights because you don't have figure out the physical "switch" problem, and anybody can still use the lights in the apartment without having access to HomeKit.
  • An AppleTV for your hub

    That should get you going!

Better to be paranoid when you're posting on reddit where there's ALWAYS some idiot who will hurt themselves if you don't tell them not to.

I had no idea the IF app existed! I've seen IFTTT but I never really played around with it. It looks like they're still working on getting smart products integrated with it, so I guess I'll have to actually do research to figure out fun ways to use these things.

What I have is a Wink Hub, a Aeotec door/window sensor, and an aeotec Smart Switch. I don't have the slightest idea how to control either of them!

That's exactly what I was thinking with the kitchensafe, it goes with some of the things that inspire these crazy ideas. I really like how it doesn't unlock even if the batteries die, which could lead to some fun. I've seen the chastity sites but it seems so convoluted, I really want to think of simpler ideas. One of the bonuses of that is that you can chain together simple ideas into strange complex predicaments.

The story of the lock is actually related to that. I had done a similar thing, using snapchat and a friend. Then one day I got it in horny head to stick all my boxers into a suitcase so I'd be forced to only wear panties for a week. I locked them up and mailed the key to a friend with a greeting card I had around. When I saw them that weekend, I asked if they got the card and they said yes, but didn't acknowledge the key. I thought they were fucking with me, but apparently the key fell out of the envelope! So eventually I had to just buy bolt cutters to get it off, but now I'm used to panties for everyday wear!

Sadly, it looks like the cheapest door holders would run around $30-40, which I can't really justify spending on this, even though it sounds like a fun project!

I have a lot of different Smart outlets being used around the home. It really depends on what your use is going to be.

For a cheap outlet where space is not an issues, these from KMC have worked well for me. They are pretty dependable even in areas with weak WiFi signal and the energy monitoring is nice for things like air filters or fans.

KMC also makes a nice multi outlet plug. I personally use this to control the multiple led light strips at my garage workbench.

For anything 15A, I would say TP-Link is the way to go. These have been great for me, but the newer HS105 does have a better form factor. I have used these for my garage fridge, windows AC unit, and tools at my workbench. There is an energy monitoring variant as well, the HS110

You may see that there are a ton of the cheap round shaped smart plugs on Amazon and other sites. I have found all of these to be almost exactly the same, no matter what company they come from. They work well enough for simple devices like lamps, but they have tended to have issues in anywhere, but perfect WiFi signal areas.

Let me know if you have any questions on this or any other devices. After a few years of upgrades, I am at over 110 smart devices, so I can tell you what not to get...

A budget of $4000-5000? That's a lot for me.

I'd suggest some Smart Bulbs or Smart Light Switches depending on a few factors.

If your room has a neutral wire or not (most smart switches require it except the Lutron Casetas).

If you want color (Most Smart LightBulbs do).

And if you enough electrical knowledge or not.

The Gosund Light Bulbs are great for the price based on reviews and price.

https://www.amazon.com/Multi-Color-Controlled-Compatible-Assistant-Equivalent/dp/B07G2CM96F/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=gosund&qid=1558588469&s=gateway&sprefix=gosund&sr=8-5

And for Light Switches. The Martin Jerry dimmable switches are great as well, I use them personally, pretty reliable for me.

https://www.amazon.com/Martin-Jerry-SmartLife-Dimming-Assistant/dp/B07FXYSVR1/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=martin+jerry&qid=1558588565&s=gateway&sr=8-6

If you are a homekit user, I don't know what to do for you.

Anyways.
Another thing I'd recommend is smart plugs, find out which devices would turn on automatically or go back to it's plugged state after being plugged in.

My personal recommendation for smart plugs would be the TanTan smart plugs, I also personally use them, found them in the Flea Market, 4 plugs for $10. If you could find them for the same amount and price, it's a go.

https://www.amazon.com/TanTan-Wireless-Required-Anywhere-Upgraded/dp/B071VYFJRL/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=tantan&qid=1558588840&s=gateway&sr=8-5

They even use the same app as the light devices I just mentioned!

Now for thermostats.

It really matters on what smart speaker system you're using.

Ecobee = Alexa compatible

If you're a DIY guy...
The Sonoff switch is going to be perfect, it's only $5 at Sonoff's website anyways, but I can't find the buy page, so I'll put an amazon link instead.

https://www.amazon.com/Sonoff-Electrical-Household-Appliances-Compatible/dp/B07BDFDHX9/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=sonoff&qid=1558589310&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Last thing, is a smart speaker, there are so many different brands, but I'll just suggest 2 from different Assistant Platforms.

Alexa:

https://www.amazon.com/All-new-Echo-Dot-3rd-Gen/dp/B0792K2BK6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=amazon+echo&qid=1558589424&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Google Assistant:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/google-home-mini-smart-speaker-with-google-assistant-chalk/6082194.p?skuId=6082194

Okay, that's just my long list of unnecessary suggestions, you don't have to take it, it's just the products i'd say to consider.

u/partisan98 · 5 pointsr/HomeImprovement

You are gonna need multiple lights.

Here was my plan of attack for a similar problem and it worked very well(room is only 225sq ft though)

I got 4 of the tall floor lamps that put most of their light straight up (9X4=$36) and stuck 100W equivalent LED light bulbs ($10) in them.

Then plug them into something like these outlet remotes ($28). I like these ones cause there is a All on All off button. If you want you can spring for the Bluetooth connected ones but looking at my phone when i wake up is blinding so i prefer a physical remote.

All in all you can light the whole room pretty well for $74 and the best thing is you can keep a remote by your beside to turn on/off all or individual lights without getting out of bed.

Also before you stick all your stuff in the room you might want to consider repainting the ceiling to help defuse light into the room when you install the lamps.

The difference between brand new white paint and white paint that is 10 years old can be pretty surprising.

u/Meinlein · 1 pointr/googlehome

I thought the same thing as you did - I grabbed the philips hue white starter kit and a smart outlet for each family I bought for.

The white bulb starter kit was $49 for 4 white bulbs and the hub. Amazon, Best Buy and Home Depot had good prices on them - they're pricey but real nice. The color bulbs are super nice also but cost more.

The outlets were $16.88 each on amazon - Here is a link for the 2 pack for $31 https://www.amazon.com/LinkStyle-Function-Required-Appliances-Smartphones/dp/B074QGK828

The outlets are nice for lamps or the coffee maker.

I'm using cheap 4" Sewer pipe, the thinner lighter pvc piping along with Whye and 45deg elbows. Picked them up at Lowes because they had the brighter white pipe compared to the sun-tinted stuff they had at HD. Since i was simply hanging them from the ceiling, i wanted them to look "nice".

Few things i'm doing which i'm not sure is fully necessary...

  1. Once cut and ready to assemble (i went one piece at a time, slowly measuring along the way) i lightly wax the inside of the pipes to keep things flowing nicely. No joinery, just pressed to fit by hand which allows me to expand easily like i did for this 3rd drop. I just wax as far as my arm can reach, not really worrying too much on the longer pipes.
  2. I have simple plastic blast gates... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005VRPQ92
  3. Remote controlling the DC via https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072F9DGRL
  4. All of my drops have these quick-connectors.. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009AY5ET4 . On the hose side i use their male connector https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009AY5E94
  5. Since i installed a 4" piping and such, i reduce to 2.5" just after the blast gate/quick-connector... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DSDSY2
  6. Then extremely flexible 2.5" hose to the dust boot... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M35BE8D
  7. Lastly into the SuckIt dust boot... https://www.suckitdustboot.com/product-page/suckit-dust-boot-for-shapeoko-3-xl-and-xxl?categoryId=7b98942b-ae43-e2ff-7e50-014f08c9ff6b

1-5 work perfectly with my other tools... miter saw, table saw, router table, etc... Since i don't have it yet, i can't attest to how well all this will work the SO3 (:fingerscrossed:).

What I'm using,

Smartlife devices works with Alexa and Google assistant so no issues there.

Smart Plug TanTan Wi-Fi Wireless Mini Socket Outlet Works with Amazon Alexa and Google Home & IFTTT, No Hub Required, Remote Control Your Devices from Anywhere, ETL Listed [Upgraded Version] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071VYFJRL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_XxhBCbN1X5SQ1

This was my first plug, it works well but is bulky, but gets the job done, and I'd much rather the in wall socket but can't because I'm renting. I use it for turning my plant lamps on at sunrise and off at sunrise set.

Smart Power Strip WiFi Smart Cord... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FDX6XZ6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

This is what I'll be buying from now on. For the price you get a lot of bang. Each socket is individually controlled, or they can all be turned on or off together by addressing the strip as a whole. I upgraded from the tantan to this with my tortoise enclosure. It now controls basking, uvb, and plant light individually though I have them on same timers, as well as a space heater which I have triggered on at night if the enclosure hits below 65, the heater will be powered on and heat the room to 70, and shut off.

Hope this helps!

I got these smart plugs the other day for $16.50 for a 4 pack. They work with the other chinese smart plug I already had, smart life app works on both brands. I'm actually happy these only work on 2.4 GHz bands so they get better range and since they don't need perfect connections to work.

u/SoVerySick314159 · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Yeah. . .it works exactly like you'd think. It stays put and does nothing until you plug it in again. At least, I IMAGINE that's what it would do, since I would never in my life think to try that, and I can't try that for you now. But, since you have one of these, maybe you could try it.

If you have to unplug it, maybe get one of those remote controlled power outlets? At least make it easy on yourself, and more convenient.

The desk has presets. Favorite standing setting, favorite sitting setting. Press the button and it goes to the height you set it for. Unplugging it will likely erase the setting every time.

u/oldcrow · 14 pointsr/3Dprinting

I call those "Birds nests". Yours is the best I've ever seen!

I watch my printers with this Wi-Fi camera. I like it because it can see in the dark, and pivot to look around at my filament spools and other things in the room.

If things go haywire and I need to shut down the printer, I use these Wi-Fi power outlets. I have one on each printer and a lamp in the room.

Both the camera and outlets have iOS/Android apps and work great on my phone.

u/Id10t404 · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Not sure but I personally use the KMC brand ones. I also have a couple TpLink but prefer the others due to the app and being able to see more information such as energy used and a better time frame / graph. The TP link basically just showed hours on last I checked.

Below is a link to a 3 pack, currently about 22 bucks

I agree with you that "Yet another Pi" or "Yet another arduino" is getting rather old. I'm also not a fan of using someone else's cloud to control my house.

There is replacement firmware for the Sonoff https://www.amazon.com/Sonoff-Remote-Control-Compatible-Android/dp/B078GDFYTY here https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota My only problem right now with the Sonoff is the low current values of the relays. I like how it has the AC-DC converter and the wifi all in one.

This guy here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2gyzKcHbYfqoXA5xbyGXtQ has a bunch of videos about this stuff.

I'm pretty old school, about 80 / 20 Insteon in-wall switches and Insteon outlets, being controlled with Misterhouse.

I am looking to expand my system, and I'll be using a combination of ESP8266 and ESP32 to do things like garage door sensors and garage door button pressing. I also intend to use the capacitive switch pins on the ESP32 to keep my end users from turning off the floor lamps.

u/eponra · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

Yup it is. Its also pretty easy and cheap. Just get a sonoff rf bridge, and some rf switches or plugs.
With the sonoff rf bridge you can just "learn" the rf codes, and combine that with alexa, and now alexa can control the rf plugs/rf switches.

Pro: cheap. very reliable. If internet/wifi is gone, you can still control the plugs with an rf remote.
contra: theyre oneway, so you dont get any information back from the plugs. (like power usage, running time, whatever)

Sonoff rf bridge:
https://www.amazon.com/SONOFF-Wireless-Controllers-Automationb-Compatible/dp/B07CWTT8R1

RF Outlet Plugs (you can get anything that works with 433mhz):
https://www.amazon.com/Century-Wireless-Electrical-Household-Appliances/dp/B01N23GRYD/

But sonoff has also wifi outlet plugs, ao you need no bridge:
https://www.amazon.com/Sonoff-Wireless-control-Compatible-Anywhere/dp/B07DDGVC7B/ref=mp_s_a_1_26?ie=UTF8&qid=1541506877&sr=8-26&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=sonoff+wifi

And the famous sonoff wifi switches, which you can connect directly to appliances, such as an 3D-Printer. Or a lamp. ;-) Also dont need a bridge.
https://www.amazon.com/Sonoff-Remote-Control-Compatible-Android/dp/B078GDFYTY/

I for myself have like 50 rf plugs and switches at home since ages, and as alexa moved into the home 2 years ago, the sonoff rf bridge moved with alexa into the house, and is since then controlling everything in the house. ;-)

u/Mrheathpants · 3 pointsr/Nerf

You want one rated at least 16a. There are cheap ones that work okay on amazon, but ideally you would get the 21a omron switch from the obligatory switch list

I use the BN-LINK BNC60 outlets. Someone on reddit introduced them to me. Here's a link to a 4-pack. The cheapest I've ever gotten them was 5% off this price, but evidently they went on sale awhile ago for $18/3-pack. Anyways, I use tuya-convert on a Raspberry Pi to put Tasmota on them. They're great and do energy monitoring and have a 15 amp limit which is kind of rare I guess...most are 10 amp.

I’m about to buy one. I opted out of the Wemo because of some of the feedback I received about them having issues reconnecting, not sure how valid it was but it irked me.

u/chasonreddit · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

Let's look at what you need here. Obviously a wifi capable board. Enough processor and such to handle simple commands, it has to be able to talk to your app, and run the wifi stack. A relay (I am going to assume 110V)

I'm not much into circuit design, I like to paste together off the shelf stuff, so I would go with a raspberry pi (with 8 IO ports) and something like this for the relay.

Or something like this and you don't even have to write the app.

u/daveski3 · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

I have this set up with Octoprint Anywhere and IFTTT. I have Octoprint Anywhere set up on my Octoprint (and the app on my phone). You can set up Octoprint Anywhere so that it sends you an email when the print is completed. My printer is plugged into a smart outlet (VeSync). If you get the app IFTTT (stands for If This Then That) you can set it up so that when you get the email (Gmail) from Octoprint Anywhere, it turns the smart outlet off. Works great. It may sound confusing but it’s actually very easy to set up.

These are the outlets I have but I’m guessing IFTTT would work with most brands. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074GVPYPY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_

u/FatPhil · 2 pointsr/gpumining

Is it safe to use remote outlet plugs so that the power to the rig can be controlled remotely?

I am an electrical noob but in my research I learned that its best to keep as few connections and extra steps in the wiring process. Will a constant 700+ Watts into each of these remote outlet be a cause for concern?

u/Flygonial · 2 pointsr/Nerf

OK, I'm not entirely sure of the links, but here are some examples:

16A switch, seen this recommended by Heath before. Considering that he does some really nice flywheel builds, I'd be inclined to trust him.

These are cheaper and seem close to or match the ones MTB used in their guides. IDK about legitimacy, though.

u/RichardBLine · 4 pointsr/HomeKit

Sure. Just replace the switch with a Homekit enabled switch. The one in your post looks similar to this one in my neighbor's house: https://www.amazon.com/SHARNDY-Warmers-Heated-ETW13-2A-Bathroom/dp/B00S4FJ6YY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1551004089&sr=8-4&keywords=heated+towel+rail . In her house, this is just plugged into an outlet, located in the wall, that's turned on/off by a regular switch. I replaced the original switch with a Lutron Caseta switch and now the towel warmer comes on via schedule for her.

I have this floor standing model: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0016L5H0U/ref=twister_B00F3X79IU?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1, and it's plugged into a VOCOlinc Smartbar:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NJRS8TX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Mine also turns on and off via a schedule. In addition, I also placed an Aqara water sensor in my shower, so when it gets wet, the water sensor turns on tower warmer if it's not already on and it turns off after 2 hours.

u/Zenatic · 1 pointr/buildapc

Thanks, this actually lead me to researching home automation and using plug switches that monitor usage.

To answer my own question I think I might be looking into either hardware like: Plugwise or using a plug switch based on Z-Wave like this: Aeon Labs.

The home automation can get expensive, but it has the side benefit of allowing me to control things remotely.

u/TheVulkanMan · 1 pointr/wyzecam

Yeah, that is how it would work.

Depends on what kind of siren you are looking for, indoor or outdoor?

Some of them are under $20, and can't really go wrong with most of them, they just need to be loud. Same goes for the smart plug, if you want indoor, or outdoor, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/meross-MSS620-Waterproof-Assistant-Certified/dp/B079L1RSF7

u/monkeysoup-op · 1 pointr/AnimeFigures

Yes! There is not need to cut the strip expept maybe at the end of the strip so it fits inside the shelf. I don’t use L connectors since I found that I don’t like cutting them and when I had tried once previously my whole strip got damaged. Also L connectors won’t work with my strip since these aren’t the waterproof kind that have a large layer of rubber over them, making them easy to Bend and turn. these are the leds I use and these are the WiFi plugs I use. And yes, if you put all the plugs under the same name folder in the Alexa app you can shut them all off with one button.

I've been trying to do everything hubless and the only options that way so far (at a reasonable price point) aren't in-wall outlets.

That said, I've been using these and don't dislike them. They don't block the other outlet port, but I would certainly prefer just in-wall smart outlets.

u/BismarkUMD · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I hava these smartlife outlets to control my humidifiers and holiday lights. I currently have them using IFTTT to turn on and off for different things. I have a few different recepies for them. Using IFTTT for complicated tasks is tricky and often requires very creative combinations. HomeAssistant is much easier to do complicated tasks. These do not need any extra hub to use.
Edit: I can never format links

u/Derekeys · 2 pointsr/Stringify

I’m in the exact same boat.

There must be a web alternative to create a virtual “device” that’s discoverable by Alexa.

That way you could create as many devices as you’d like in order to use Ifttt’s awesome services.

In the meantime, I have an alternative but it’s kind of bizarre and I’m sure not the most savvy way to accomplish this.

I happen to have a few Wifi Switches laying around and they are acting as my go between for devices to trigger other Ifttt.

So I’ll create an Alexa routine that does whatever right away and then in addition will turn on one of those WiFi switches. That “turning on” can also act as a trigger in Ifttt for whatever I want.

Alas, Stringify was a much better middle man. But this does work! Albeit, a frustrating workaround.

u/Jarvicious · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

What's your budget? ZWave/Zigbee/Insteon switches, outlets, and compatible hubs will do this easily but they won't be cheap.

If you don't need a wall switch, we have a couple sets of these and they're great.

u/AnalphaBestie · 1 pointr/arduino

Yeah. I dont like high voltages as well so here are the options:

u/Akovano · 1 pointr/homeassistant

I just ordered one of these to use for my pool pump. I'm going to try an flash it with tasmota like this procedure as it should have an ESP8266. If it doesn't work and I don't brick it, the stock firmware still is a better solution than the cheap mechanical timer that is there now.

u/Lukegoneloco · 1 pointr/microgrowery

I use these smart outlets because I can use them as my timer and monitor the energy pull. And you get an alert on your phone of the outlet didn’t turn on or off for whatever reason when scheduled.

Others use kilowatt meters. Can buy for like 20$ on amazon.

u/hiddenbutts · 1 pointr/sysadmin

It may be worthwhile to take a look into consumer options for the tvs and small devices.

Ankuoo NEO Smart Plug, Wi-Fi, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NAX2GVU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_sZ4QybZ6RWDQ8

Wemo also has a few other options.

These are minimal install/config once you connect them on the network. Though they can also grow legs and walk off easily.

u/Sgt-JimmyRustles · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Look here.

https://www.amazon.com/WiOn-Outdoor-Wireless-Switch-50054/dp/B00ZYLTJ16

Just looks like it's for stuff like pool pumps or fans or other stuff that's not strictly a smart outlet. I've heard of Wion before and they make smart outlets.

u/sininspira · 1 pointr/googlehome

Etekcity is extremely responsive. Only problem is you can only fit one per two-outlet socket, and it has to go on the bottom socket if you want anything to fit in the top one.

u/burnblue · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

I just did this a couple weeks ago. Took it off and put this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZYLTJ16/ . Wifi, not Z Wave. Just downloaded the app and set the timers.

Interesting choice of words though... it's a timer, it's already automated. You set the pins and it turns on and off accordingly, set and forget. You just don't have remote control, which technically is the opposite of automation.

Edit, because I juat saw your other comment about wanting Alexa or Smartthings control. There are ZWave boxes like this. But honestly so far the only reason I've seen you give is to tie the timing to sunset. If that's it I think it may not be worth it for you to not stick with what works, as sunset doesn't change much every day. I replaced mine because the timer stopped working, plus I wanted more complex schedules and I often turn the pump on or off on demand, from out on the deck away from this box.

In the past I had assumed I'd be buying ZWave too, but nowadays I've come to not put that much trust in Smartthings and Zwave. Wifi seems to be the future.

u/ImaginaryCheetah · 25 pointsr/homeautomation

door openers are not cheap.

if you want to open doors that have knobs, you also need to add an electric strike, or electrify the trim... which i've recently learned is what locksmiths call door knobs.

here's an opener on amazon, that is about 1/3 the price of a commercial unit.

https://www.amazon.com/Olide-SW100-Electric-Automatic-Operator/dp/B00VJXBCIG/

and an electric strike to release w/standard interior knob, this is about 1/3 the price of a commercial unit.

https://www.amazon.com/UHPPOTE-Electric-Strike-Fail-Secure-Control/dp/B00V45GWTI/

you will need to provide power for the opener.

depending on the complexity of the controller for the door opener, it may be able to directly control the strike.

once you have the opener and the strike, you just need any smart relay to use your phone.

such as, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078GDFYTY/.

i don't know anything about the different ecosystems, i'm sure apple homekit has a relay as well.

u/UPGnome · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

Just wanted to chip in about the cheap ones that you mentioned. I picked up a 3 pack of these for $30. I will say, they will satisfy all of your needs. I use the app to schedule, my wife can press a physical button on them, the app on my iphone works well, and I am able to use Alexa/Google Home to control them.

I have had 2 issues with them:

-Once in a while (not more than once a month) I need to unplug one of them and plug it back in because it loses wifi connectivity

-Can't use it with IFTTT or Stringify. This limits my automations to the scheduler within the app, and I can't create more advanced routines using location/other things.

Overall, they were worth the money for my needs (turning on/off some Christmas lights), but if you want to get more advanced or have something 10000% reliable you should spend the extra $.

You might want to consider the Hook Hub. It allows you to use inexpensive Etekcity plugs

I've had this system for 8 or 9 months now and although I can point out some stuff about it I don't like, I'll say this--it works flawlessly for me. In fact, it works better than my Philips Hue system. One thing that is cool is that you can purchase a crap-ton of those cheap Etekcity plugs and the Hook will control them all.

Supposedly they're coming out with a next-gen version of the Hook, but I've seen nothing about that recently. They sell the original/current version on Amazon, but note that it began as a Kickstarter project.

u/zackaweed · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I have one and it absolutely does the trick! I use it for this exact setup for a backyard string light collection connected to cheap RF controlled on/off plugs instead of more expensive smart plugs. Only downside with this setup is 1. make sure the RM pro is less than 100 feet from the lights / plug because it otherwise might be unstable, and unfortunately since these lights won't send a signal back you can never be certain that what it says on your automation dashboard is correct, but that is a minor inconvenience, as you can just flip it back and forth til it is synced.

Edit: I used these RF plugs and they work great for cheap. https://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Upgraded-Wireless-Electrical-Compatible/dp/B01N5JSAHM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1527096443&sr=8-3&keywords=rf+plugs All you'd have to do is setup the RM Pro automation to first turn the plug on, wait a few seconds, then send a signal to the light itself to change to whatever color you want.

Nice! I got this one from Ankuoo that I use with my Gaggia Classic that has similar features.

u/metropolitanorlando · 14 pointsr/blogsnark

I use these for my plug-in wall sconces and other 'ambiance' lamps around the house. They connect to an app and I have them on a timer from 5:30 to 11 every evening. You can also just control wirelessly from your phone.

I also use this lightbulb for my front porch - it's got a sensor to turn on at dusk.

I recently moved to a 2-story house with laundry in the basement and we use those giant ikea bags for hauling laundry up and down--works way better than our baskets.

One more thing...caveat I have NOT tested this out yet but it's in my cart. I think I got this tip from The Strategist but this buffer tool is supposed to be great for warming up muscles and massaging sore muscles! I have chronic, terrible shoulder pain and I'm praying this gives relief...ps this is not code for Sam from SATC and her Sharper Image massager ;)

u/Roderrooder · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Thank you for the reply, after doing some research yesterday I came to the same conclusion. I would think that an app or phone could bridge the divide between two smart devices but i guess we aren't there yet.

I ended up going with one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072F9DGRL/?coliid=IR8E466WS784J&colid=2NZBR3EQDND0I&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I don't really need the extra ability to control via my phone although it would be nice. Also I wish this thing had a physical button on the outlet itself in-case of remote failure or dead batteries but at that point I can just bypass it and go straight to the wall.

u/eric987235 · 1 pointr/homeautomation

How many outlets will be on the circuit? If it's only one or two you might consider something like this.

u/thedude386 · 2 pointsr/DIY

You could get something like this and have a remote to turn the lights on and off.

https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Fosmon-Electrical-Weatherproof-Included/dp/B072F9DGRL

u/SirEDCaLot · 1 pointr/homeautomation

If you do that, then why do you need WiFi? Why not just get a remote control thing like this? That's designed for turning Christmas lights off but your application will be the same I'd think.

Also do you have any other home automation stuff?

u/STLgeek · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

I'm using Sonoff basic's flashed with Tasmota. This overwrites the crapware that they ship with, enabling MQTT and offer the option to emulate Belkin WeMo as well as Philip's Hue, which I think should work with Home.

Using MQTT, the modules are very quick, I'd guess less than 500ms.

The basic modules have one extra pin that can be used as a generic digital input, connecting to temp/hum sensors, IR diodes, etc.

u/Ron_Fuckin_Swanson · 3 pointsr/DIY

It would be a lot simpler and cheaper to just get a WIFI controlled outlet and control the lamp from your phone. You can also set timers using this function, so the light is always on a certain time of day.

u/BongRipsForBuddha · 1 pointr/getdisciplined

I'll share my routine, but i'll also emphasize the top comment. Get to sleep on time!

So I have a four part alarm system to wake up at 6 am every day. The four alarms are: my phone, my clock radio, my mr coffee, and a lamp hooked up to one of (these)[https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XSTJST6/?coliid=I36MIX57QIXQ1G&colid=O3HOWXBSON9H&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it] smart plugs.

Waking up in the morning starts the night before. I prepare my coffee pot for the morning and make sure it's set to brew at 5:50 and make sure my other alarms are all set. The smart plug has an app on my phone where I can set it to automatic timers for on/off. So the lamp goes off every night at 10:45 if it's not already off.

At 5:50, the coffee starts brewing, and the first alarm on my phone goes off, no snooze. At 5:55 I get another alarm on my phone, again no snooze. And at 6:00 the lamp turns on and my alarm clock goes off across the room, next to my coffee pot and mug. This forces me to get out of bed and get started right away. I pour the coffee and let it cool off a bit while I brush my teeth. Then I drink a bit of the coffee and take the dog for a walk and I'm wide awake for the day.

u/invidious07 · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

If you are stuck having to turn it off maybe get some wifi outlets to at least make it less inconvenient. Set up a schedule to turn off at bed time. Or leave it off most of the time and turn it on manually when you want to play VR, which you can do from your computer or phone instead of having to actually go unplug things.

Having above average senses isn't always the blessing it seems like it should be. I am a super taster and I can't really enjoy beer or other foods that others consider mildly bitter, to me they are very bitter. And food that others consider bitter, forget about it. I also have 15/20 vision but that doesn't really have any drawbacks.

Lucky my hearing and smelling are pretty much average, those two seem to be the worst to have above average sensing. Its easy to avoid bitter foods, but you can choose to stop hearing or smelling things, you have to change or leave the environment.
